Welcome to and thank you for attending our 71st Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival! As someone who had the pleasure of growing up in Fairhope, I have very fond memories of the Arts and Crafts Festival and remember it being a somewhat magical event. Overnight the streets were transformed and one-of-a-kind creations were around every corner just waiting to be discovered. You never knew what kind of treasures you would find but always found yourself in awe of peoples’ creativity and skill. This year’s Festival is sure to be no different, and I’m proud to say that we have some of the best artists from around the country sharing their crafts with you!

We hope you enjoy your time at the Festival and in our little piece of paradise on the Eastern Shore. Our featured artist, Mr. Ricky Trione, does a wonderful job of capturing our “Utopia on the Bay” and how we’re drawn to it through the different seasons of our lives. I want to thank “Mr. Ricky” for his contributions to the Festival and our community. I also want to wish a very special thank you to my co-chair, Marissa Thetford, and all of the volunteers who work year round to ensure the festival stays as special as it is. The Foundation was formed by volunteers of the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Committee in 2016. The Foundation’s main purpose is to protect and promote the heritage and integrity of The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival. The Foundation provides a means to promote community appreciation of the arts and support art education through scholarships and grants.

More Than 70 Years of Fairhope Arts & Crafts

A Treasured Local Tradition

According to records and newspapers, the Arts & Crafts Festival originally started as a tour, planned to coordinate with the Mobile Jaycees’ Azalea Trail and Mobile Mardi Gras celebrations, with the idea that visitors attending these major events in Mobile would be attracted across the bay, thus allowing visitors and local residents a chance to see some of the many talents of Eastern Shore residents.

The first Arts & Crafts Tour took place February 22 to February 28, 1953. All exhibits were inside store windows and consisted of a wide variety of interests. The tour schedule included entertainment and craft demonstrations and lasted for an entire week. Although some artists did sell items, the majority of the “tour” consisted of exhibits for viewing only.

In 1965 the tour expanded to include exhibitors and activities from the cities of Spanish Fort and Daphne. The week’s opening ceremonies were held in Spanish Fort and ended with a play in Fairhope. The Chamber reported 4,150 visitors; 52 exhibitors and demonstrators were highlighted, in addition to another 41 artists who participated.

In 1967 there were more than a hundred displays, exhibits, and demonstrations. There was still no entry fee, but all participants were asked to pay a 10% commission on their gross sales.

By 1975 craftsmen displayed works and methods in “Craft-Houses” (which were created out of vacant buildings). For the first time in 1978, the show was condensed to three days. This was also the first year that the craftsmen were placed on the sidewalks, rather than in buildings and businesses.

In 1983 the first prize money was awarded. The Best of Show recipient was given $250 and booths were moved from the edge of the streets to the middle. The

Mary McGrath Award was established in 1984 and the first Spring Fever Chase was organized in 1986

In many ways the festival really took off in the nineties despite torrential rains in 1991 that damaged the tents on opening day. There were lots of firsts; first time the show was expanded to Magnolia, first time there was a Food Court, first time TV coverage, first time awards were exchanged between the Chamber and the Art Center, first time there were more than 700 applicants and first time it was named one of the Top 200 Festivals in the United States by the Sunshine Artist magazine. Since then, the festival has received this same honor each year. Artists who participate in shows all over the United States vote on this award.

Moving into the new millennium the success of the festival continued, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors and artists from all over the country. In 2016 the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Foundation was created to continue the tradition and expand the Festival’s purpose of community outreach. The beloved local tradition, that consistently ranks as one of the top art shows in the country, celebrates its 71st anniversary in 2023.

As one may see from this history, the Festival has changed in many ways; its exhibitors are no longer only locals; they come from across the United States. We no longer charge the exhibitors commission on their sales, just an entry fee. The number of visitors is now in six-digit figures, and the activities taking place in conjunction with the Festival have grown by leaps and bounds.

The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival’s purpose remains the same: to promote good will and festivity in Fairhope, to exhibit for show and sale the highest quality artwork and craftsmanship available, and to host the Festival in the loveliest area in the world.

2023 Featured Artist, Ricky Trione Blind artist paints from his heart

Each year, the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Chairman selects a featured artist whose work serves as the centerpiece of the Festival, and appears on commemorative posters, t-shirts and other promotional materials. The featured artwork is also reproduced in limited prints, signed and numbered, and available exclusively at the Festival’s official merchandise booth.

The 2023 Festival Chairman, Stephen Roberts selected Fairhope native, Ricky Trione. The two have worked closely at the Festival’s Children’s Art tent for years and Stephen said he couldn’t imagine a more perfect featured artist to represent Fairhope than Ricky.

Get to know Ricky Trione

Ricky Trione is a Fairhope, Alabama native who enjoyed drawing very realistically for years. Many people have, in their collections, the drawings Ricky created in pen and ink of the Sand Island and Middle Bay Lighthouse, as well as his sea life, birds, boats, and images along the Gulf Coast. As a sighted artist, he never used color, only black and white.

Ricky had two freak accidents, within a seven-year period, which took away his vision, one eye at a time. He lost vision in his left eye from an accident while serving as a Captain in the Army, in 1993, when a logging truck projected an object through the open window of his vehicle. Seven years later, Ricky’s other eye was injured when he was struck by a tire tread while pulled over to check under his hood, causing permanent blindness.

Ricky had to give up most of his independence. He no longer could drive or do pen and ink drawings, among many other things. He continued to work as a counselor for the Blind and visually impaired until fall of 2005.

In April of 2006, Ricky was asked to work on a piece of artwork with his childhood friend, and 2022 Festival Chairman, Vicky Nix Cook, who was the fine arts supervisor for Baldwin County Schools. Vicky partnered with Ricky on an art piece for Very Special Arts, where an artist with a disability is paired up with a professional artist. VSA and Vicky opened the door for him to begin a new art career. Ricky works in a tactile style, drawing with raised paint, and he can feel his way

across the surface. Ricky offers school children hope and inspiration, showing that everyone can be creative and work through limitations. He incorporates character education in his art lessons for the children.

His hopes, through art, are to bring the viewer a sense of joy and to help them see “The Beauty in God’s Creation.” Ricky’s primary inspiration and role model is his Uncle Ronald Trione, who was a local celebrated artist during the 1960s, until his death in 1970. Ronald inspired everyone, because he painted by holding a paintbrush in his mouth, due to being paralyzed from his neck down. Ricky strives to carry on the inspiration and joy of his Uncle Ronald. He also encourages people with disabilities to partner with Very Special Arts, so that they can also experience the joy of actively participating in the arts. Ricky shares his favorite scripture with everyone he meets,

“We walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

Hours are Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The annual Arts & Crafts Festival is held every third weekend in March. For three days downtown Fairhope transforms from the quaint and charming old-fashioned streets to an outdoor art gallery featuring painting, jewelry, pottery, and other handcrafted treasures. The admission is free!

The picturesque streets of Downtown Fairhope on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay.

WHY:

The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival is a 100% volunteer run festival. The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Foundation uses proceeds to support the arts in the community through donations and scholarships. Besides being chosen by various tourism departments and magazines as one of the top events in the South, it is also recognized throughout the US as one of the top festivals.

DIRECTIONS:

If you are traveling along Interstate 10, take exit 35 and head south on U.S. Highway 98. Continue on US Highway 98 for approximately 10 miles. Upon entering Fairhope, turn right onto Fairhope Avenue and head west into downtown Fairhope. The Festival is in the downtown area

SHUTTLE SERVICES:

Hot Wheels of Daphne shuttle service during the weekend. Parking for the shuttle will be available at the Piggly Wiggly parking lot in the Plantation Point shopping center and Eastern Shore Village Shopping Center on the corner of Hwy. 98 and Fairhope Ave.

Shuttle Hours: 10:00 am to 5:30 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday

The cost of the shuttle is $5 round trip.

HANDICAP PARKING:

Handicap Parking will be available

• On Bancroft in the parking lot behind the Fairhope Museum of History.

• In the Municipal parking lot on Bancroft

DOWNTOWN PARKING/TOWING:

Parking is limited in the downtown area and available on a first come, first serve basis.

Please pay attention to no parking signs during the Festival and do not block driveways. The City and Festival committee make every effort not to tow vehicles, but it may be necessary if a driveway or residence is blocked or if your vehicle interferes with the Festival activities. In the event your car is towed during the Festival, please call Tony’s Towing Services at 251-9287324.

Parking is available:

• In the public parking garage off North Church Street.

• On the public parking lot off South Church Street

• At the First Baptist Church of Fairhope, St. Lawrence Church and the Fairhope United Methodist Church on South Section Street except during church services.

Golf Cart Parking:

Gulf Cart Parking will be available at the Coastal Alabama Community College on Bancroft.

BICYCLE VALET:

Fairhope’s Adopt an Artist Program proves Southern hospitality is alive and well

For more than 20 years, the merchants of Downtown Fairhope have provided a unique service for artists participating in the Festival by matching them with a local business for the weekend.

It all began decades ago when a few local merchants reached out to the artists who were located in front of their stores during the Festival, offering restrooms, snacks, and just a cool place to get out of the sun for a few minutes. Business owners and artists enjoyed it so much that the concept was pitched to the Downtown Fairhope Business Association as a formal program to encourage all of the local merchants to participate and “Adopt an Artist” was born!

For more than thirty years, Diane Douglas, owner of In the Company of Angels on De La Mare Avenue, has led the effort by organizing the Adopt an Artist program in partnership with the Downtown Fairhope Business Association. Individual merchants sign up and agree to offer various services to Festival artists over the weekend. Artists are invited to utilize their adoptive shop for general information, refreshments, restrooms (when available) and, as always, gracious Southern Hospitality.

Not everybody takes advantage of the opportunity, but all seem appreciative of the gesture and often mention it on the final evaluations as a “major highlight” of the weekend. In fact, many artists have suggested the program to other Festivals across the country and several have initiated their own “adoption” programs. Local merchants love to share stories of their treasured time with the artists and many request to be placed with the same “adoptee” year after year. With little effort or expense, forever friendships

are made every March in the heart of Fairhope.

After three decades at the helm, Diane and her team at In the Company of Angels have decided to pass the torch to the team at M&F Casuals on Fairhope Avenue, who have graciously agreed to take over organizing the program.

“It has been a privilege to adopt the artists of Fairhope Arts and Crafts for the past 34 years,” said Diane. My staff from In The Company of Angels has helped to serve the needs of those visiting our community. Providing Southern Hospitality from our local merchants during the special Festival is a pleasure and thank you all for your support!”

The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Foundation would like to thank Diane and her team for their dedicated support to the Festival. They are a big part of what makes our Festival (and Fairhope) so special.

Eastern Shore Art Center Outdoor Art Show

Adjacent Art Show Happening this Weekend

Now in its 51st year, the Outdoor Art Show hosted by the Eastern Shore Art Center is located directly next to the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. 90 Artist booths line the sides of Section Street north of Magnolia Avenue. On Oak Street in front of the Art Center, live artist demonstrations will take place all weekend long, including: Glassblowing by Muffinjaw Designs, Plein Air Painters, and Wheel Throwing by ESAC Pottery students/instructors. Visitors can also enjoy a full lineup of local musicians such as Jay Megginson, Zoe Burdett, and Cathy Brumback. Local food truck Divine Empanadas will also be set up on Oak!

The ESAC Outdoor Art Show is a major fundraiser for the Art Center, allowing free admission to the public all year round. Gallery and gift shop hours are TuesdayFriday 10am-4pm, Saturday 10am-6pm. 2023 Festival Judges

The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival; Judged and Juried

The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is a juried event. For those unfamiliar with the term, juried art events have a selection committee for art & craft exhibitors and require that applicants submit slides or photos of work or products and booth displays, along with other information like art process, material descriptions, and/or other relevant information for their prospective art mediums or category. The selection committee (the jury) reviews all applications before choosing exhibitors for the event. On average, the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival receives nearly 400 applicants, with the final show consisting of roughly 215 to 230 invited exhibitors.

On the first day of the Festival three judges evaluate the more than 200 participants in the show. They select winners by scoring each individual artist and the artists with the highest overall scores get the largest awards. There is also an award for each artist with the highest score for their medium. Being selected a winner is not just about the honor – it comes with a cash prize and a coveted spot in next year’s festival. Meet the 2022 judges…

Amanda Petro

Amanda is known for her textured oil paintings and use of vibrant colors. Her art is housed in private collections, corporate collections, and has been featured in National publications. She was born in Fairhope, Alabama with the desire to create and continues to draw inspiration from the coast’s brilliant colors in her work.

She graduated from The University of Alabama earning a degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Oil Painting and a minor in Art History. Following her graduation, she studied in the graduate Painting program at The Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. Amanda currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama.

DAISIE HOITSMA YOUNG

Alexis Spina

Alexis Spina is a metalsmith and ceramicist whose work aims to elevate recycled and found materials. Her jewelry and small scale sculpture is heavily inspired by architecture, history, and post apocalyptic symbology.

Originally from Pittsburgh PA, Alexis currently resides in Athens GA where she is an adjunct instructor at the University of Georgia, the co-creator of a pop up gallery called Feral Galleries, and a part time studio artist. Alexis received her BFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her MFA from the University of Georgia.

Daisie Hoitsma Young holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Ohio University, and a BFA from the University of Texas at Tyler. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Manifest Gallery (Cincinnati, OH), Morehead State University (Morehead, KY), Gadsden Museum of Art (Gadsden, AL), Ground Floor Contemporary (Birmingham, AL), Attleboro Arts Museum (Attleboro, MA), Visual Arts Center (Huntington, WV), and ARC Gallery (Chicago, IL) among many others. From 2016-2018 she served as the Gallery Manager of Ground Floor Contemporary, a cooperative art gallery in Birmingham, AL.

She is currently a full-time instructor at The University of Alabama where she teaches in Painting and Foundations. Hoitsma Young’s work focuses on the varying experience of time. Often referencing the landscape of a new home, or actions from a daily routine, she explores and marks psychological and physical shifts. Most recently her work relates to her experience as a mother, and the companionship she shares with her young sons.

Juried Award Categories

The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival presents artists more than $22,000 in cash prizes for the top artists and craftsman. A panel of three very talented and highly respected judges were chosen to select the best works in the 71st Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. The awards are presented during the Artist’s Dinner on Friday evening.

Patron Award Program

Many artists would argue that the most coveted honor is when visitors stop by their booth and purchase their works. The Patron Award Program allows businesses or individuals to honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchase at least $100 from one of the festival vendors. When they find that special piece and buy it, they present the artist with a ribbon and placard bearing their name or the name of their business. Patrons may purchase works from any exhibitor they choose and the money goes directly to the artist. An Army of Volunteers

More than 500 volunteers work together to produce the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival

As soon as the Festival closes each March, our volunteers eagerly begin working on the following year’s festivities. The all-volunteer effort is the heart of the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. There are so many components to organizing this festival, and the 2023 Festival volunteers have been hard at work to make all the pieces of the festival fall into place seamlessly.

Our committees are led by volunteers that are passionate about what they do. Some committees work all year long, while others only work the week of the festival. Each one plays an essential role in the process.

People from all walks of life and all ages give countless hours to make the annual festival a success, and the love for the festival is passed on from generation to generation. We cherish the faithful volunteers that have joined us year after year, but we also welcome new volunteers that will help continue the tradition that has been part of Fairhope for more than seventy years.

That love and dedication allowed the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival to grow from a small local festival into a festival that attracts artists and visitors from all over the nation, being named one of the top 15 Festivals in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine and being recognized by publications like Southern Living Magazine and the New York Times.

2023 Chairman Stephen Roberts and co-chair Marissa Fleming Thetford are proud to work together with this great group of volunteers to present the 71st Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival.

Giving Back

The mission of the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Foundation

Part of the mission of the Arts and Crafts Foundation is to give back to the community. After the Feestival the proceeds of the festival are donated to beneficiaries in the community in the form of a grant or a scholarship. The selection of beneficiaries is determined by the volunteers. The volunteers nominate groups/organizations who they would like to see receive a donation. Potential recipients must be tied to an art-based activity or enhance the local arts in some way. The Board then reviews the nominations and votes. Some of last year’s beneficiaries include:

Fairhope Sewing School, Dance Without Limits, Baldwin Co. Youth Orchestra, The Dogwood Trail Program, The Exceptional Foundation, The Friends of the Fairhope Library, The Friends of the Fairhope Museum, Baldwin Pops, Rotary Youth Club, Fairhope High School Band, Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department.

Student Art Murals

Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Student Mural Contest has been part of the festival since 2007 and has grown enthusiastically. The Eastern Shore middle and high schools participate in this contest that is part of the Artist’s Dinner on the Friday night of the festival each year. The participating festival artists vote on the artwork and read their descriptions provided by the schools.

We are pleased to announce after three years we have found a home again for ALL nine of the student art murals at 403 Fairhope Avenue at the Fairhope Chocolate Shop! Fun for All Ages

The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival is full of fun for the whole family. The Children’s ART Tent, presented by Coastal Alabama Real Estate, is located on South Church Street across from Fairhoper's Community Park.

Children can make crafts with their friends and siblings or take one of the art lessons given by local artists. They can take every craft they make home.

And don't forget to check out the CARE Bears and take pictures with them!

The Children's Art Tent is open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day and all activities are 100% free.
