Summer Tips

for surviving the summer heat in Bahrain

S

ummers in Bahrain are HOT! At the height of summer, temperatures are typically above 40° but there are many days when the temperature can hover around the 48° mark! Luckily, most places are air-conditioned, keeping us comfortably cool and hydrated. If you are in Bahrain during the summer heat, we have our top nine tips.

wearing sleeveless tops and shorts which expose a greater amount of skin can lead to greater moisture loss in a very short period of time in extreme heat, leading to dehydration. Instead, choose loose comfortable clothing in lightweight and light colored fabrics to counter the effects of the heat. This will also show respect for local culture and customs,

Bottled water is available everywhere. This is particularly important when you plan on going to the beach as many people cool off with a swim in the water and neglect to drink plenty of water at regular intervals. This can lead to mild illnesses such as a heat rash or sunburn or more serious problems such as heatstroke.

1

where wearing very skimpy clothes, particularly in public places can cause offence.

3

Take care with what you wear when outdoors

Summer

When you are out and about exploring and not in the comfort of an airconditioned environment, choose your clothes carefully. Our skin is the largest organ in the body and its job is to help the body regulate heat by controlling the amount of moisture lost from the top layer of skin. Contrary to what most people believe, 6

Bahrain101.com | July 2018

2

Drink plenty of water

This may seem like rather obvious advice, but is often overlooked. Make sure to always carry water with you, even if for a short ride from your home or hotel to your destination. The best way to drink water is to sip a little water at regular intervals rather than gulping it all down.

Head out early for outdoor activities

If you plan on outdoor activity during the summer months, it is best to head out early in the morning before 7 a.m. so that you will get a good couple of hours of outdoor fun before the sun reaches its strongest. Make sure to wear sensible clothes and shoes and as mentioned before, carry plenty of water and hydrate at regular intervals.

Summer Tips keeping cool and comfortable in an air-conditioned environment.

8

Use sunscreen

Use a good broad-spectrum sunscreen with a mid-range SPF and follow re-application instructions diligently to ensure that you remain protected from harmful UV rays which can cause skin irritation and rashes, wrinkles and fine lines and premature aging. Prolonged exposure to the harsh sun, especially from around 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on hot days may even lead to skin cancer so invest in a good sunscreen and carry it with you wherever you go.

4

Cool off in the water

Have fun in swimming pools! What more is there to add on this?

5

Eat smaller meals more regularly

Summer

There is a good reason why we feel less hungry during hot weather; this is our body’s natural way of regulating temperature. The heavier a meal, the more energy the body needs to expend to digest it, making us feel more lethargic. If you want to feel more energetic despite the scorching heat, eat fewer lighter meals at regular intervals. Cold soups, refreshing drinks, plenty of fresh veggies and fruits are all excellent summer foods and will give the body the nutrition it needs without draining its digestive resources.

8

Bahrain101.com | July 2018

6

Enjoy a tepid shower

You might think this odd advice for a steamy day, but taking a lukewarm or tepid shower in hot weather is an effective way to regulate temperature. Cold showers will cause the body to produce more heat later on. If you’re feeling really flustered, run your hands under cold water for a few seconds with your palm turned up or a quick feel-cool fix. There is a major vein running through this part of the body and contact with cold water will immediately cause the blood to cool down.

7

Take advantage of airconditioned shopping malls

A trip to the mall is a great way of

9

Stay fit with indoor exercising

There are plenty of excellent gyms in Bahrain, from small corner gyms to large world-wide establishments. During summer months, many gyms offer promotions and discounts to draw in more members so take advantage and workout in the comfort of an air-conditioned gym.

Bar Bites B28 at Swiss Belhotel has an all-new Ladies Night with a revamped menu and Bahrain101 is all for it.

T

he B28 Bar is definitely one of the most in vogue places to down a drink. The dark and cozy plush interiors and that spectacular view of Bahrain’s beautifully lit skyline merely add to the ambiance. These are reasons enough to visit the bar with a couple of friends or even by yourself. But B28 raises the stakes with new and tempting offers.

Feature

Ladies Nights on Wednesday features two complimentary drinks for the girls, Happy Hours are now Buy 1 get 1 from 4pm to 8pm every day and a Hoteliers Night where you get 50% off on all food and beverages upon showing your company ID. But the most exciting change we were looking forward to was the change in the menu. As much as we loved the previous menu, this new menu is crafted by the executive chef at the hotel, Holger Lang. He’s put together a series of perfectly sized bar bites that allow you to buzz your taste buds and not just your head. 18

Bahrain101.com | July 2018

first started off with some incredible looking welcome drinks – Sangrias! The word just sings and so did we. As we were taking in the taste and the deep rich red of the Sangria, we got served our first platter. It was the Arabic Cold Mezza – the bread was hot and toasty and along with it we had a generous amount of Hummus, Moutabel, Tabouleh, and Muhammara. To be honest, we didn’t require anything more; we were perfectly content with the quantity and definitely the flavors. But as the night progressed, we had a generous platter of Nachos, that was to die for. After which we had a small plate of Breaded Onion rings, Chicken Croquette, fish and chips and crispy Calamari rings and we can’t express to you how perfect they were. The batter was thin and crispy, and the insides were thoroughly cooked! Next, we moved on the Chef’s personal favorite, the Mediterranean Chicken Kebab and we could see why he recommended it, there was definitely a lot of love there. We also had steak fries and then to finish off we had a pulled CAB rib slider that had a slow-cooked Angus beef patty. This seems like a lot and we were properly stuffed but we couldn’t stop ourselves, it was hard just to imagine stopping. We are definitely going back. B28’s new menu gets a thumbs-up and a double tap from us. n
