Reset Your Mind This Ramadan

Clinical dietitian Diana Nakhle shares her tips to remain healthy during Ramadan.

Y

ou know Ramadan is just few days away, when you start seeing all those Iftar ads, food promotions at the supermarket, mothers rushing to shop; basically Ramadan has come to center around food. It’s a festive time of the year that could negatively impact your health depending on what you consume in the non-fasting hours. There are reasons why some can gain, lose, or maintain their weight during this Month. Have you ever wondered, how you can control yourself while fasting, but when it comes to Iftar meals you choose to overeat? It’s all in your mindset. Let it be different for this month and keep in mind these simple tricks. l Top the cycle of overeating l Decide what, how much you eat

and when to stop.

Feature

l Focus on a healthy balanced

relationship with food.

Break your fast mindfully

Sip on a glass or 2 of water with 1 to 3 dates to replenish your energy and ease digestion. Remember to drink a glass of water at least every hour to replace the fluids you lost. Add food high in water like 10

watermelon, tomato, cucumber. Avoid fizzy drinks, juices & sodas and limit caffeinated beverages and tea as they increase your water loss.

Start light & slow. Scan the food table first before you dive in and select what you really want to eat. Eat and chew slowly to enjoy the taste of food rather than rushing to eat. A small bowl of non-creamy vegetable soup followed by a good portion of salad is a good way to fill up your stomach and prevent over eating. Give your stomach a break before indulging in the main dish.

minutes are better than nothing. You can be physically active after Iftar or before just listen to your body.

Energize Your Suhour This meal will give you energy to continue your day. Have it as a mix of whole grains and protein such as whole wheat bread with white cheese or eggs, beans, oatmeal or bran flakes with dairy. Because of our overindulgent society, food is often seen as a negative light. To reverse this effect, practice some mindful eating this Ramadan so you will be able to achieve wellbeing and cleanse your mind body and spirit.

Small Balanced Portions Eat in small plates so a small amount of food will fill your plate. Choose wisely one main course and make sure it is balanced with whole grains, lean protein like fish, chicken breast, beef sirloin, legumes. Think grilled rather than fried for sambousa. Satisfy your sugar craving with a fruit or a small piece of sweet if you couldn’t resist it.

Walk away After you took that control of when you will stop eating, walk away from the food table. Speaking of walking, don’t forget to stay active as 30

he holy season transforms the Kingdom from a happening hub into a serene and peaceful island. If this is your fist Ramadan at the beautiful island, here are some ways to enjoy the holy month.

Greet your companions The formal greetings in your mother tongue come naturally as the situation requires. However, it’s appreciative to remember two words while you meet your Muslim friends during Ramadan. Greet them with “Ramadan Kareem” during the holy month and “Eid Mubarak” during the three days Eid celebrations at the end of Ramadan.

Learn to be Compassionate

Feature

Do Charity

Enjoy the Gatherings

Charity is considered as one of the five essential pillars of Islam. Share the generous ideas and donate to charity. You can donate food, clothes or money to individuals and charitable organizations.

Ramadan is a time to meet with friends and family to celebrate the spirit of togetherness. Accept the invitation for Iftars and Ghabgas and visit your host with a box of Arabic sweets, dates or any other gifts that suit the situation.

Dress up to Celebrate You are expected to celebrate your modesty at public appearances during the holy month. Do cover your shoulders and wear long dresses. Beautiful Pashminas, abayas and designed Galabyas will give you an elegant appearance during Iftar and Ghabga gatherings.

Feature has aspects other than its spiritual significance. The months imparts the lessons of patience, restrain, love and co-existence. The number of followers who recover from their incurable bad habits, are increasing after each Ramadan. Here are some guidelines that you should follow at Bahrain during Ramadan.

Control Your Appetite Ramadan is known for fasting during the daytime. The Non-Muslims should respect the custom of their Muslim colleagues or friends and should restrain themselves from eating or drinking in public. This, in turn, will teach you self-restrain during necessary situations.

Control Your Tongue Fasting during Ramadan doesn’t only mean no drinking and eating, but also means restraining oneself from habits like backbiting, cursing, or fighting. If someone really wishes to revive from these behaviors, Ramadan is the ideal time. Their resistance towards these negative behaviors will build up to a point of annihilation by the end of the month.

Control Your Addictions

Enjoy the Arabic Culture Ramadan is the best time to explore the true Arabic spirits. Plan a trip to Bab Al Bahrain or visit any of the Ramadn tents in the Kingdom. You can find the details about the best Iftars and Ghabgas in the Kingdom in the previous pages.

Read onto the regulations that you must follow in the Kingdom in Page 16.

Restrain and Revive Yourself during Ramadan The holy month of Ramadan

The pubs, bars and the smoking areas will be closed down during the holy month. This is probably the best time to revive yourself from these vices since and you will already be forced to cut down due to the restrictions.

Control Your PDA The Kingdom of Bahrain and the Middle East in large do not encourage the public display of affection. Be careful that kissing and hugging your partner or friends of the opposite gender will be considered as offensive during Ramadan.

Control Your Celebrations

Feature

It is allowed to enjoy music during the Iftars and Ghabgas during Ramadan. However, Ramadan is a season for prayer and spiritual reflections. It’s better to avoid loud music in respect of the peaceful season.

Wish you a reviving Ramadan in this year! Bahrain101.com | May 2018
