An Interview with French model and actress Aymeline Valade.

W

hat is your relationship with fashion/style?

I like to think that it is a healthy one (smiles). I love experimenting with my own style and I think it is an interesting nonverbal communication tool. What you wear says a lot about you.

What does jewellery represent for you? I use jewellery for different purposes. The most important reason is to bring a touch of sophistication, as well as greater chic and femininity to whatever “look” I am trying to create, but also to infuse my overall style with a glowing/ radiant touch.

What is the first piece of jewellery you received? My first piece of jewellery was a medallion I was given when I was born.

What is your secret for a great look? To have a strong piece which sets the mood for the overall look, while keeping the rest “low-profile” so as not 14

to overdo it. It’s all about accessorising with a subtle touch to bring that essential element of light...

same jewellery on throughout – or else adjust it by adding a piece or two for the evening.

You would never leave the house without…

What do you think of sustainable fashion?

My rings and earrings!

What do you like most about the Ice Cube collection? Its simplicity. It goes with any look for night- or day-time wear, while being cool and chic at the same time.

What is your favourite piece within this collection and why?

The rings, because the more you stack them, the more you can play with the different combinations. Aside from anything else, it feels great to have a collection of them on your fingers…

What kind of look would you pair with this collection? Well, the great thing about this collection is that the very minimalism of its design makes it work with just about everything. So you can dress for the day or the evening and simply keep the

I think it’s a great thing that we are becoming increasingly aware of our responsibilities with regard to the impact we have on Earth. We have the opportunity to change the bad habits we’ve developed, and see what we can do to improve things in the future-enabling a decent quality of life for those who work in the different sectors of the fashion industry would be a great step forward. We could also develop new means of production to reduce impact on the environment, and place greater emphasis on recycling systems for example. With its Journey to Sustainable Luxury, Chopard serves as a pioneer in the watch and jewellery industry, making a real impact on the supply chain with the ethical Fairmined gold they use in some of their collections, such as Ice Cube Pure. But at the end of the day, this is not simply about fashion but applies to all

ix facets, twelve ridges, eight peaks. The cube spells minimalist geometric perfection. Sharp, clean, more rock than romance, mid-way between urban chic and modern glamour, Ice Cube makes light of genres and conventions… Cool to the point of being glacial? Because it can!

Origin 1999 and the design of this geometrical figure inspires Chopard to create a powerful, avant-garde collection inspired by ice cubes. Frosty watches or chilled jewellery models, Ice Cube’s trendy looks have it all.

(R)evolution Ice Cube Pure. Same spirit, different time… and collection. Smaller cubes, polished or diamond-set, lined up in tightly packed rows. Rings, earrings, necklaces… not to mention bracelets for the hippest wrists – or ankles. On their own or part of a crowd? The ultimate fashion accessories can be worn solo or stacked up with others in a glorious combo of yellow, white and rose gold. Brilliant sparkle, fresh appeal, multiple facets… A powerful sense of self. Like the woman who wears them. Can’t live without it!

humankind. I do feel, however, that fashion has this great ability to be an active part of the change and to set a very positive example. Fashion probably has one of the most powerful communication networks, so if this industry becomes involved it will definitely have a significant influence on global production and consumption. I am aware that this may have a certain economic impact but this has to be weighed up against the more important issues – namely the very survival of life on earth – that are already at stake.

Because sustainable luxury is a priority today, Chopard’s choice of ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified gold for this collection is the way to go. It’s a symbol of being truly 21st century. A label that guarantees respect for the mining community and the environment, used in High Jewellery since 2013 for the Green Carpet collection and in Haute Horlogerie for L.U.C watches. Making Ice Cube Pure part of this process shows Chopard’s determination to extend the choice of ethical gold to all its products over time. Whatever it takes. You can’t get cooler than that. The Clothes Genie Gulf Insider caught up with Lulwa Al Amin, fashion savant at a photoshoot for her latest collection. Charming, passionate, and ever so gently perfectionist; she talks about what makes fashion so inspiring.

Y

ou’ve made fun, modern, and quirky clothes that flatter women. What has been your inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration in everything, which can sometimes be overwhelming. Sometimes I obsess over stuff and that’s where the real inspiration comes from. I find a topic I like then I dive into research (books, online, social media, museums, kitchen experiments, etc.) and from there I come up with more and more topics. At the initial stage of any project, I am not a fashion designer. Instead, I take the role of the topic I am researching. I can be a historian, a cook, a musician, or

16

Gulf Insider October 2017

a botanist. From there, I create my own original work which then evolves into artwork then into textile design.

You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in the fashion industry—among them Matthew Williamson—how does it feel for a Bahraini to achieve these things? Luckily I’ve always known what I want and I worked hard to get it. When I was applying for an internship, I wrote down a list of places I wanted to work at. Williamson, at the time was number one on my list. I kept on applying and applying until I got the job. Working at

Matthew Williamson was one of the most valuable experiences I got in this industry. At Central Saint Martins where I studied, we gained creative knowledge about fashion. But working in an established fashion house, and rotating between different departments ... that is priceless education.

From New York to Paris to Bahrain, how is the fashion scene different in these places? Would you say that Bahraini fashion is garnering a more international following? Lulwa Al Amin was founded in London. I ran everything from sampling

Style

to production to PR ... from London. At that time, designers always needed a middle man (Buyers) to get their brands out there. So London was my base, Paris was essential as that is where I would meet most of my international buyers, and Bahrain was home and where friends and family became my clients . Times have changed and social media has revolutionized the fashion system. I now operate from Bahrain,

to consumer . Having launched our website this year, our customers can now buy directly from us and we ship worldwide. We promote collections online and via social media. Today, being based in a fashion “Capital” is no longer required. Designers are now emerging and operating form various cities, all with an international following .

How do you market fashion? It’s not just designing isn’t it? It’s also about being market savvy and capturing the clientele’s wants and needs. How do you balance the creative aspect of fashion with the business aspect? I always have to balance creating pieces that are true to my vision and brand identity with what my customers want and need. I always find it important to communicate with my customers. I have built a loyal clientele by always listening to customer feedback , and delivering what they want . I have also learned this through buyers. For example when I was working with Deena Al Juhaini, supplying for DNA in Riyadh, she would always request that I tweak my silhouettes to suit her clientele . Women in Riyadh preferred maxi style, and so most of the pieces they would order would be originally short and I

I always have to balance creating pieces that are true to my vision and brand identity with what my customers want and need. it is where we sample our clothes. Our fabrics and haberdashery are still sourced from the UK and Europe. Paris is still essential, as buyers are still important. Having said that we now have a new system of business

What is your advice to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs? Be original, be you, never copy, never follow! Gulf Insider October 2017

Eye-catching How Brave Combat Federation, and its upcoming International Combat Week, are increasing the international awareness on the Kingdom of Bahrain.

F

ounded under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the fifth son of His Royal Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Mixed Martial Arts promotion Brave Combat Federation has recently celebrated its first anniversary and, unarguably, its main accomplishment so far is driving the international attention towards Bahrain. With eight events promoted in six different countries -- Bahrain, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, India, Kazakhstan, and Mexico --, Brave CF completed an unprecedented world tour for a Mixed Martial Arts promotion in its first year. It reached 84 countries and more than 800 million households on TV, as well as hundreds of media, specialized or not in

18

And here everybody knows Brave as the ‘Bahrain Prince’s promotion’, that’s how it goes. Mixed Martial Arts, around the globe. These achievements, of course, not only made it a national project in Bahrain but increased the awareness about the Kingdom of Bahrain worldwide. The reason is simple, according to Mohammad Shahid, president of Brave Combat Federation. “Differently than any other major event we have ever

had in Bahrain, Brave CF is local. So it doesn’t matter if we have a Brazilian, an American, a British, or someone from any of the 32 nationalities we’ve already had represented inside the cage, it’ll always be the Bahraini flag raised at the end of the day”, he stated. In fact, it can go even beyond that, as says Sweden’s Erik Carlsson, a professional fighter competing under Brave CF banner. “Honestly, I have to admit, I didn’t know about Bahrain before. I had heard the name here and there, for reasons that I can’t recall but that’s it. When I signed my contract, I learned so much and ended up visiting the country for my debut fight at Brave 2, last December”. “And there’s more”, he continued. “Not only me but my circle of friends

and relatives, people from my gym, my fans... I mean, a lot of people not only in Gothenburg but in Sweden and Scandinavia got to know and learned a lot about Bahrain after I joined Brave”. Moving further West the impact is even bigger, as points out Henrique Rasputin, who fights out of São Paulo, Brazil. “The truth is when you talk about the Middle East people in Brazil can only think about Dubai. That’s all they know. And I kinda took that as one of my goals: ‘You know what? I’m gonna spread the word about Bahrain’. And I do that for all they’re doing for the fighters and for the sport”. “On top of that, Brave became

something huge in Brazil”, Rasputin added. “We were in a transition moment in the Brazilian MMA scene, without anything to look up for. Even UFC, which at some point was having monthly events here, is reducing their presence in the country. On the other hand, Brave expanded, invested in the country, and in the athletes. Of course, people will acknowledge and appreciate that. It’s natural. And here everybody knows Brave as the ‘Bahrain Prince’s promotion’, that’s how it goes”. Bahrain’s most prominent MMA fighter, the local star Hamza Kooheji also embraced the cause and guarantees: his case is the perfect exhibit of Brave CF’s magnitude.

three-time local champion in his home country, spoke about the excitement of getting the call to compete at Brave 9 and coming to Bahrain for the first time. For USA’s Alex Trinidad, in turn, sees his Brave CF debut, also scheduled for Brave 9, as a homecoming. The US Navy veteran served in the Kingdom of Bahrain during his days in the force and couldn’t be happier for the chance of visiting the country again.

From 12 to 19 of November, Brave CF will be back home with Brave International Combat Week, a series of events taking place around Bahrain and promoting its culture and the vocation to be a sports hub in the region. The program is headlined by Brave 9: The Kingdom of Champions, on November 17, at the Khalifa Sports City, in Isa Town. The fight card will be the biggest one ever promoted, with three title fights and fighters from 21 different countries. United Kingdom’s Charlie Leary, a

ast month a group of us visited the Domain Bahrain for their famous Friday brunch and we were not disappointed. We had both a delicious feast and a wonderful time. The choice of food is amazing and everything is absolutely first class. If you love seafood I particularly recommend you try the oysters; “the biggest I have seen in Bahrain” according to one of our party. There’s many different delicacies to try and enjoy from different stations at this superb all you can eat buffet. If you love seafood I particularly recommend you try the oysters; “the biggest I have seen in Bahrain” right moment throughout the afternoon. The Domain’s in-house sommelier, Chad, was on hand throughout the day offering expert advice for anyone seeking to perfectly pair what they drank with what they ate. The hotel GM,

Frank, recognizable by his trademark brightly coloured blazer and bow tie, was also on hand. As the name of this brunch suggests, it’s best you leave the kids at home because this is a time for the grownups. The background music is lively and played just at the right volume enabling us to speak without needing to raise our voices too much. A live DJ gradually, and expertly, ups the musical tempo as the afternoon progresses. The head barman, in addition to be able to make pretty much whatever you may ask for, also happened to be an accomplished juggler - it was fun watching him manage to keep so many bottles in the air at one time.

The views across Manama from the restaurants 34th floor vantage are stunning and further add to the general atmosphere. I’d recommend booking a table by the window, though our table was as far from the window as it could have been and it didn’t matter one bit to us. So there you have it – amazing food, beverages, choices, atmosphere, music, service, views… and juggling! And after 4pm, when the brunch officially came to a close, the party continued upstairs in Txoko lounge for those who were having just too much fun to go home.

lovers around the world exceptional new experiences that push the boundaries and our new Nespresso Expert machine is a perfect example of this. We listened carefully to our consumers and learnt that the ability to personalise is especially important to them. This is why we have introduced a longer serving size, the Americano, which is a very long and mild coffee prepared with 25ml of coffee followed by 125ml hot water. strategic direction of the ownership group and make the Royal Golf Club a must-play facility in the GCC and Middle East region. My main focus continues to be to improve the overall experience of the club for all members and guests and making memorable experiences on and off the golf course. I want the facility to be recognized as a tourist attraction for Bahrain and to be an instrumental part of the tourism authority’s future plans to grow tourism as a base commodity for the Kingdom. The Royal Golf Club could be leveraged by hosting a European Tour Event (which we hope will return in the near future) which will bring a golf presence and awareness to the Kingdom and the region. I would also like to continue to grow the game within Bahrain with our continued golfer development and junior programs, which we offer through our Golf Academy, staffed by our PGA Golf Professionals. Having a bigger presence in the local and international schools and working closely with the Bahrain Golf Association is a priority in the development and awareness of the game.

In our last interview with Executive Chef Paul Gindra, he talked about renovations taking place in the restaurants. Are there any other projects in the pipeline? We are always striving to make improvements to the facilities at the Royal Golf Club and 2018 will

be no different. We have proposed capital projects to include golf course improvements with the inclusion of cart path, bunker renovations and landscaping projects to improve the aesthetics of the golf experience. We will also improve our outdoor terrace in Repartee, make improvements to our fitness facilities as well as plan infrastructure improvements to maintain the sustainability of the facility.

Banquets and special functions have also been a big focus for the club as we diversify our offerings and have hosted several large wedding functions. The nice thing about the Royal Golf Club is that it’s not just for people who golf. How are you raising the club’s profile to non-golfers? The Royal Golf Club has many things on offer outside of golf and with the

facility being open to all; we have become very flexible to cater to many different requests. We have a full service fitness facility with a functional gym managed by our professional fitness managers to include personal training and fitness classes along with a full-sized swimming pool where we host swimming classes, aqua aerobics and day passes for our outside guests. Banquets and special functions have also been a big focus for the club as we diversify our offerings and have hosted several large wedding functions and this year we are hosting Bahrain’s first International Jazz Festival, which will take place on our driving range facility. We continue to focus on these offerings to raise the clubs profile with the use of social media to reach a broader range of customers.

Ultimately, what do you want the Royal Golf Club to be known for? I want the Royal Golf Club to be known as a family friendly club that has offerings for both the golfer and non-golfer in the family. I want to be known for our excellent customer service, unparalleled playing conditions as well as our quality food offerings. We are a club that is open to all and we welcome everyone through our gates to enjoy our facilities. I feel we have the right mix of members and non members and a well qualified staff to meet everyone’s expectations.

Interview with Lalima Mathur General Manager, Elite Crystal Hotel.

L

alima Mathur, General Manager of Elite Crystal Hotel stands out among her contemporaries being the only woman General Manager in the Hospitality sector of the Kingdom. Gulf Insider brings forth her unique journey so far our readers.

How do you respond to the title of being the only woman General Manager in the Hospitality sector of the Kingdom? For years yes it was a good feeling to be recognized as the First Lady premiere of hospitality but I am even

more thrilled to know I have very good company now although we haven’t met so far. For me it’s the most natural thing to be in my position. I take the challenges and do my best as any other individual would, regardless of the gender. But trust me I don’t see any favoritism in my company or in dealing with other stakeholders like our partner vendors, guests or even the Government and that is quite a relief.

What inspired you to become an Hotelier? It’s about being a people person.

Three decades ago the opportunities to meet & professionally socialize with people were rather limited. Being a hotelier provided the platform that I wanted. Needless to say the passion was born almost instantly and I knew this was my calling and I was able to steer my career in the right direction.

What is your most favorite role in this career? As a team leader the ability to inspire and perhaps help a lot of youngsters develop their career and kindle that spark they have for this business.

Hotels

And yes of course the ability to build memories for our guests who are here either on vacation or on business. At this stage of my career - for most of it I am behind the scenes but the feeling is still the same.

What do you consider as the MUST HAVE quality of a Hotelier? Patience - I guess the ability to diminish ones’ ego and focus on the issue at hand and deal with an unhappy guest. While we all aspire for excellence - things do go wrong and how one reacts in those times defines a professional.

What is next for Elite Group International? After building a strong reputation in Bahrain, I guess it is natural for us to have regional aspirations and of course to constantly upgrade and update our products.

Bahrain is a country where people from different parts of the world travel for business. How do you manage to offer the best service to people from diverse backgrounds? Our team of managers and staff come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This really helps us to deliver guest expectations. At the heart of good hospitality is just a willingness to please and a passion to excel and that emotion cuts across cultures - yes we have a rather strong recruitment process to ensure we get the right energy into the system but it still requires constant training and close supervision.

If you were not in this career, what other profession you would have chosen? Although it’s difficult to imagine any other profession, I guess I would be a teacher. It might sound cliche but I feel with my skill of “patience” this might have been a good option - although my daughter and husband might disagree.

This year, the Women’s Day celebrations are associated with the women Engineers in the Kingdom. What is your opinion on that?

We are meticulous, have an eye for detail and can balance everything in the correct ratio. Frankly its tough to highlight one career stream in which ladies excel in or a career stream we don’t excel in - and I mean it with all humility but I am glad Lady engineers are being recognized for their contribution - it will certainly encourage a lot more to join the field.

Do you think that a woman should sacrifice much more than her male counterpart to attain success in her career? No, not necessarily. It can be vice versa too. It depends on the opportunities one gets and of-course the rest is individual abilities and skills. But yes the common known practice is for the Ladies to compromise but I see

After building a strong reputation in Bahrain, I guess it is natural for us to have regional aspirations. a big change with the Millenials - I am a mother of one!

Your career is proof of your success. Can you reveal the secret behind it? Adapting to a changing environment - learning fast and sharing the learning. And of course none of this would have been possible without a supportive family and the right professional atmosphere.

Finally, what is the greatest lesson that you have learnt out of your career? I feel I am no where close to the pinnacle so too early to comment but yes the day I am able to summarise it I promise to call you !

Sojourn in Switzerland The charming cities of Nyon and Geneva become the setting for a fantastic European stopover. By Charlie Cooksey

T

he country known for its luxury watches, fine chocolate and quality cheeses was a place in the world I’d not yet been to, although it’s one I’ve wanted to tick off the list for some time. I had the opportunity of visiting by way of a last minute business trip, I knew I wouldn’t have the chance to see much of the place while being there on business so I extended the return flight to stay out for the weekend so I could really take the place in – and I’m pleased as punch that I did! When you come in to land at Geneva airport you get the most stunning views of the mountainous region and of course, Lake Geneva, so be sure to choose a window seat. The first place I visited was Nyon which is only a short 20 minute drive from the airport, which by the way, is no ordinary drive. My face was stuck to the window looking out

I couldn’t stop thinking how if I lived in that region what a great way for your early morning cardio – taking a long swim in Lake Geneva. at the mountains and the lake which is near enough visible the whole way and at that time of year the greenery is outstanding; a stark contrast to what we’re used to in Bahrain! I should also add that the air is so clean and fresh, which is something I took for granted

having lived in Europe for 22 years and only came to appreciate once I’d experienced a summer living in the Middle East. Nyon, located 25km north east of Geneva city centre, is a beautiful traditional Swiss town that gives you a real ‘European’ feel, it has an array of grade A restaurants with ‘al fresco’ dining areas next to the lake which takes the dining experience to another level (weather permitting!). One of the mornings I hired a bike and cycled all over, after a while I stopped at a small beach area next to the lake, stripped off and dived in. The temperature was perfect and it was really refreshing, the water is so clear and clean… I couldn’t stop thinking how if I lived in that region what a great way for your early morning cardio – taking a long swim in Lake Geneva. I’d recommend anyone to check out Nyon even just for a day for the sake

of a short journey from Geneva, it’s one of those places of outstanding beauty but any longer than 3-4 days being a tourist – you’d probably get bored. Certainly if you’re younger. Next stop: Geneva; certainly has a lot more city feel with a lot more to do. Being a tourist the first place I visited was CERN, which is the European Organization for Nuclear Research and is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research and home to some of the top scientists in the world. For what it’s cracked up to be – I was slightly disappointed, the visiting/tourist is small and wasn’t what I was expecting… especially after spending half an hour on a tram to reach it. For me, the thing I enjoyed most in this city was something that doesn’t cost anything; the scenery, the lake and the architecture. I spent numerous hours walking and taking it all in… even in the rain. With no hesitation I can say that I will be visiting Switzerland again and what I would say to anyone that is planning on going who has not yet been there; try to take more spending money than you normally would, it is the most expensive place I have been to yet. There is no escape from the high prices, even if you try saving money on a lunch and hit up one of the fast food chains – I paid nearly triple what I’d pay in Bahrain/UK for a burger, fries and a drink!

T “The Clink”

London’s original prison founded in 1166.

he movie “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” opens with Gordon Gekko being released from prison after a lengthy sentence. He is handed back his belongings. A mobile phone the size of a brick - plus his overcoat. From the coat’s tailoring it is obvious fashion has moved on. As I pack my suitcase ready for Blighty I dust off my raincoat. After ten years in an arid climate my coat’s seen little rain and like Gordon Gekko’s coat, is also a prisoner of time.

No visit to London would be complete without a walk in a park. My favorite is a ramble across Hampstead Heath from Belsize Park to The Spaniards Inn. It is a typically English summer’s day when I arrive in London. It’s raining. Pulling on my retro raincoat I feel I’m a time traveller - kinda like Dr. Who. I’m staying on London’s Southbank overlooking the Thames. An area, unlike my raincoat, that has changed significantly over the past decade. What was once a power station is now The Tate Modern. Walk eastwards along the embankment and on reaching Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, you travel back to 1599 passing a functional replica of the Elizabethan original. In those days, theatre was performed in the round, wherein rowdy audiences enjoyed bawdy performances, interrupted by Gin soaked hecklers. How different from todays’ silent reverence. With each step eastwards, you walk centuries backwards. In bygone days, Southwark boasted the fleshpots of London, ironically in a district owned by the righteous Bishop of Westminster.

Royalty mixed with the riff-raff indulging in decadence and debauchery whilst paying dues to the clergy. What odd bedfellows those priests, princes, pimps and paupers were. Bygone Southwark t’was certainly a colourful area. Many new words originated locally and made their way into the English vocabulary, most notoriously “The Clink” London’s original prison founded in 1166. The name is said to have originated from the sound a blacksmith’s hammer makes when closing the iron shackles around a prisoners’ arms and ankles. You can visit the prison on its original site. The cells are in a grim cellar, desolate and damp even with the luxury of electric lights. Inmates ranged from aristocratic Royalist supporters during the civil war, to the Pilgrim Fathers all rubbing shackles with harlots and debtors. Little grub was given so sinners had to beg from passers by through their cell bars. Gordon Gekko’s blow-dried bouffant would not have fared well. Continuing along bankside the streets liven-up as I approach Borough Market a cosmopolitan cornucopia of merchants - a veritable farmers market, craft ales, home cured meat, farm churned butter. A provincial French cheese maker is neighbour to a ruddy Cider nosed Summerset yokel trading his cheddar. Tres bon - ooohh ahh. Proof, if ever there was, that food is a great healer of cultural conflicts. After all this historic time travel, it’s time to journey future wards. Where better to start than at Charles Saatchi’s contemporary art gallery in Chelsea. Always stimulating. The current exhibition explores the “Selfie” phenomenon. On the ground floor self portraits by bygone artists like Van Gogh, Rembrandt etc. are framed in mobile phone screens suggesting selfies are a long-standing tradition. I’m not convinced. Upstairs, a man-sized mobile phone snaps passers by and steals their eyes substituting eyeballs with cigarette smoke. Unnerving, but impossible to pass. In fact, quite addictive, just like cigarettes and you guessed it - Selfies. Perhaps that’s the point. Confused by the future it’s time to return to the past. Chelsea Physic Garden is one of London’s

best-kept secrets a haven of tranquility. Established in 1673 it’s possibly Britain’s oldest garden. Founded for apothecaries its purpose was to grow herbs, fruits, berries shrubs and alpines for making ointments, potions and medicines. Darwin returned from his voyages of discovery with many species still growing in Chelsea to this day. Consequently, many of today’s cures have their ancestors still flourishing in Chelsea. No visit to London would be complete without a walk in a park. My favorite is a ramble across Hampstead Heath from Belsize Park to The Spaniards Inn. The Heath is au-natural not man made landscaping. One of the oddest and typically English eccentricities is the bathing ponds. Uninviting dark, cold pools which in summertime folks queue up to swim in. Appearances are perhaps deceptive then, you have to remind yourself that all water is clear. There is no such thing as a blue or turquoise sea - only the sky reflected. Likewise, the pond’s murky colour is due to its muddy

34

Gulf Insider October 2017

basin and green plankton. In essence, perhaps human beings are much like water, all born pure and clear then tainted by our environment. Like an old friend waiting on the horizon The Spaniards Inn looms into view, thankfully distracting my philosophical mood. The tavern is quintessentially English dating back to 1600 coinciding with Shakespeare’s Globe theater, I ponder, imagining the bard slurping ale in the pubs quaint oak beamed bar. After a pint of cask ale, the idea isn’t quite so fanciful. Coincidentally, the inn marked the entrance to the Bishop of London’s estate, so yet again the clergy show an interest in salubrious hospitality! A boundary stone can be found in the garden where it has rested since 1755. If only it could talk, I reckon it could tell a few licentious yarns. The road narrows outside the inn and a 17th century tollhouse stands where it once collected dues from passing coaches. Dick Turpin, the romanticized highwayman frequented The Spaniards,

possibly purchasing brew from the proceeds wrestled from rich folk after holding-up their carriages. Bygone highwaymen did not end up in The Clink; they were hung from a tree a few yards from the tavern. The Spaniards Inn has a fine pedigree of literary patrons Charles Dickens mentions the inn in his Pickwick Papers as does Bram Stoker in Dracula, the poets Byron and Mary Shelly were regulars, Keats penned “Ode to a Nightingale” in the pub’s garden. Mary Shelly, William Blake, Robert Luis Stevenson plus the painters Hogarth, Reynolds and Constable all enjoyed a pint in The Spaniards. Departing the phantoms of this bygone and highly esteemed retinue. I step into the sunset, back across Hampstead Heath, walking in the present; a setting sun gives me no cause to wear my time traveller’s raincoat. In truth, meandering in the “now” is not a bad place to be on a warm summers evening in London.

What is Cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency is a form of digital money that is designed to be secure. It is a currency associated with the internet that uses cryptography, the process of converting legible information into an uncrackable code used on purchases and transfers.

GLOBAL SHAPERS COMMUNITY MANAMA

Manama Shapers Interview with Huda Al Salah, Senior Analyst, Monitoring and Compliance Unit—Individuals, Tamkeen

H

ow does your passion for human development, training, and education translate into your work in Tamkeen?

My work in Tamkeen is directly related to the above-mentioned areas. I work in the Monitoring and Compliance Department, where we monitor the performance and compliance of training service providers who deliver training programs for individuals sponsored by Tamkeen. Therefore, I ensure that Tamkeen-sponsored individuals are benefiting from the training programs and will be able to use the knowledge gained from them professionally. My work allows me to make changes on a daily basis to improve the quality and training experience of Tamkeensponsored individuals. My work is self-rewarding, involves a great deal of interaction, and rotates around human development, training, and education, which conveniently aligns with my passion for those fields.

You gained experience in different departments in Tamkeen, would you recommend this to people who work in big companies? Why or why not? I definitely recommend this to people 38

who work in big companies, but also smaller ones. Gaining experience in different departments throughout the organization has allowed me to understand the nature of the organization from different angles, helped me grasp Tamkeen’s strategy and culture, exposed me to different challenges and, most importantly, introduced me to many employees across the organization.

Why did you join Manama Shapers? Around April 2016, I was introduced to Manama Shapers by Mrs. Amal Al Kooheji, who was Tamkeen’s VP at the time. She was approached by Dr. Ali Adnan, Manama Hub’s Founding Curator and Mentor, who asked her to nominate applicants from Tamkeen; Dr. Ali shared information about the hub and routed me to the application process. I was keenly interested in joining because Manama Hub is a unique platform that connects you to self-motivated and educated individuals from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about serving the community and making Bahrain a better place. In April 2016, I had one month left to complete my Master’s degree in Human Resources at DePaul University and Manama

Hub was very flexible, allowing me to delay joining the hub until I finished the degree. Thankfully, today I am in charge of the human resources and onboarding process for the Hub: a great opportunity to apply my studies practically. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Amal Al Kooheji and Dr. Ali for opening my eyes to Manama Hub and the Global Shapers Community.

Do you still have free time? If so, what do you do with it? I enjoy self-educating myself in different areas. I am an associate member of the UK-based Chartered Institute of Personnel Development and a member of the US-based Association for Talent Development. As such, I benefit from up-to-date insights in human capital development and invest some of my time to develop my skillset in this area, which serves my aim to train and teach in this field in the future. In addition, I have been taking Qur’an classes and developing my recitation skills, as religion is also an area I am passionate about. I also dedicate some of my time in volunteer work with orphans and special needs children.

Lessons from a Doormat

F

inally! I bought the doormat! I proudly kept it at my office door. It has taken me a year and a half to decorate my office—but for some reason, I forgot the doormat! It’s the first thing that a visitor sees stepping into an office, yet it has been the last thing on my mind for some reason. It’s been almost a year since we started out in our new office and things have been going well. People are starting to trust and buy into our products. We are growing slowly but surely.

It’s amazing how we procrastinate things: starting our first website, writing our book, opening our business, waiting for the perfect time and waiting for things to get perfect. In the planning stage, we didn’t think everything through—definitely not the doormat! When I took the first step in establishing our company—I just put “first things first”—even if it’s imperfect. Even the office itself took a long time to be decorated—and the doormat was not there. It’s amazing how we procrastinate things: starting our first website, writing our book, opening our business, waiting for the perfect time and waiting for things to get perfect. They will never be perfect, and in fact if we wait for that moment, we will never start. Remember, you don’t have to be great to start. But you have to start to be great. So take your first step—even if there’s no doormat in your doorstep.

THE RISE OF YOUTUBE STARS: WANNA BECOME ONE?

I

t goes without saying that videos and video content is the next big thing in the world of social media and sharing information. And with the rise of the YouTube stars, it is believed that fame and fortune can be easily attained. Sometimes videos can convey ideas and messages more effectively than written words, or still imagery. And thanks to technology, it is now easier than ever to create good quality videos using your smartphone. Here we will explore how to produce videos that boast the two most important assets: High quality, and useful content. First of all, in addition to your own smartphone, what you will ideally require to create your videos is a few devices to improve the production quality of said videos. These devices are a tripod, a smartphone holder for your tripod; these two will keep your smartphone steady and leave your hands free. A plug-in microphone for your smartphone is perfect for the sound quality of your video. And if your smartphone is an android, there are many apps to choose from to help in video production; one of the most popular apps is called “Open Camera” and is free to download. Secondly, there are a few steps to take into consideration if you want positive outcomes for your videos. At first, you have to prepare content for filming. Then, you must select a suitable location that is well-lit with zero distractions and no clutter. Next, frame your shot to know where you should be sitting and at which angle you will be looking at the camera while communicating with your audience. Before shooting your video, make sure to practice first by recording a test video. Once you get it right, you will be ready to record and upload the video that will take you to your YouTube stardom. A few small but important notes nonetheless: Make sure to clean your camera lens, enable flight mode (to avoid interruptions through phone calls and texts), and set “exposure” to manual.

Ask

Each month we will be putting a legal problem to consultant Ali Al Jabal to answer.

This month - ARBITRATION AJ Question: I own a chemical company in Bahrain. I have signed an Exclusive distribution agreement with another company with regard to distributing products throughout the country. The agreement contains a clause that “any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to the contract shall be settled by arbitration.’’ Could you please advise me on the following?  

What is arbitration?

What are the advantages of choosing arbitration as a method of dispute resolution? Do I have an option for an appeal against an arbitral award if it was decided against me?

AJ Answer: Arbitration is a way to resolve disputes out of the courts. Arbitration can be defined as a settlement of dispute between parties

to a contract by a third party without resorting to court action. Arbitration is generally considered as a more efficient process than litigation because it is faster and supposedly cheaper. Unlike litigation, arbitration provides greater flexibility with which parties can fashion laws, rules of the process, language, venue and procedure. Arbitrators typically have more expertise in the specific subject matter of the dispute. The hearings are private and the results are not part of the public record. In light of the above benefits of arbitration, it is becoming an attractive method to adopt as a settlement of disputes. With reference to the third question, generally an arbitral award will be final and binding for all parties. However, you cannot appeal the arbitration award by applying to the High Civil Court to invalidate the arbitration award if;

The arbitration agreement was invalid; The other party to the arbitration was incapacitated; You were not given proper notice of appointment of an arbitrator or the arbitral proceedings, or otherwise unable to present your case; Disputes contain decisions on matters that were beyond the scope of the submission to the arbitration. The composition of the arbitral tribunal or the arbitral procedure was not in accordance with the agreement or not in accordance with the law of the land, or The court finds that the subject matter of the dispute is not arbitrable under the Bahraini law or the award is in conflict with the public policy of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Correspondingly you can challenge the arbitral award under the above circumstances.

mull future with taxes Expats share their thoughts about how they are going to make ends meet with the increasing costs of living.

E

conomists have sounded the alarm about the need to diversify the economy since the second half of the 1980s following the major fall in oil prices. Bahrain was among the first to opt for diversification after the country almost ran out of oil options. The kingdom which prides itself on successfully “managing to adapt to new economic realities” has identified five non-oil industries expected to drive its future growth -financial services, industrial and manufacturing, logistics, tourism and information communications technology (ICT). However, lawmakers have been pushing for adopting measures that would make the 610,510 expatriates, slightly more than half of the total population, pay more for services,

mainly in the health sector. “There is a deficit in the state budget and it needs to be addressed as we go through very difficult times in the region,” said businessman Darweesh Al Mannai. In Kuwait, Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad has called for “speedy and serious economic reforms to diversify the economy and to find new sources of financing.” However, for several lawmakers, the easiest solution is to reduce the number of the expatriates who make up more than two thirds of the population, and to make those who stay pay taxes and higher fees for all services. In Saudi Arabia, home to almost 11 million foreigners, the new dependents’ tax implemented from July 1 has many of them contemplating their future

in the Kingdom. “I was born here, schooled here, worked here and married here. This is the only place that feels like home. Although, we visited India every year on our two-month summer holiday to meet our relatives, we yearned to come back here,” said 40-year-old Amal Hussain, a resident of Makkah She added: “Even my parents were born and brought up here (Makkah). Most of my relatives are also here. This place never seemed foreign to us. In fact, we feel foreign when we go to India.” With the recent implementation of the dependents’ taxes this year from July 1 onwards, expatriates have been left at their wits end. According to the directives issued by the Ministry of Finance in Saudi Arabia, the fee for each expatriate is SR(Saudi Riyal)100 (Dh98) for each dependent per month this year, SR200 in 2018, and SR300 and SR400 in 2019 and 2020 respectively. “The taxes have made our future quite uncertain. My father can manage to pay the tax for only a year for my four

siblings, my mother and I. Next year, we may have to go back to Pakistan if my father doesn’t make enough in his business,” said Hira Zulfiqar, a Pakistani national. “I am just waiting for my children to finish their final exams in March next year, and then we have planned to leave. The taxes are increasing every year and everything has become expensive. Even these few months are quite difficult,” said Umm Zahrani, another expat. “The dependents’ tax and costly education forced us to leave,” said Iman Wajih. Kashif Mirza, a father of seven, said has arranged for his family to move back to Pakistan in the next few days. “I respect the laws of the Kingdom, and I feel our time here has come to an end.”

Bahrain best country in the world for expats

A study has revealed that the Kingdom of Bahrain is the best country in the world for expats and they agree!

N

early nine in 10 expats (87 per cent) said they are happy with their lives in Bahrain, a country that offers them everything they need, Expat Insider 2017 Survey

Report said. “More than 12,500 respondents representing 166 nationalities and living in 188 countries or territories answered our questions, providing unique insights into what it means to be an expat in 2017,” said Expat Insider, one of the largest surveys worldwide offering an in-depth analysis of expat life across the globe. “The country ranks first for family life in general and fourth for the friendly attitude towards families with kids. Compared to 2016, there was a significant improvement in the quality of education (from 22nd place to sixth), and the availability of childcare and education (from 32nd place to 11th),” the study said. “With such glowing reviews, it is no surprise that almost a third of expats (32 per cent) see themselves staying in Bahrain for more than five years, and 11 per cent say they might stay forever.”

Bahrain has a lot of friendly people and the majority of Bahraini women are educated and can deal with different nationalities. As for the government, they are excellent

in dealing with the expats, very considerate and accommodating. Thank you Bahrain! I will be returning to my own country in two months insha Allah, but I will never forget Bahrain which has become my second home.

Spending Time with the Family

Hugh Haskell-Thomas spends a week in Bahrain with the Porsche Panamera Range.

A

fter attending the media launch of the new Panamera Range earlier in the year, driving the Panamera Turbo and 4S we were very impressed with the vast changes in the cars, with the new models finally delivering on the promise of an exciting executive express. [See Gulf Insider February 2017 for the full review]. However, these launches rarely provide a realistic test of ‘living’ with a car, so it was with great anticipation that I began a week of using the cars in the everyday conditions of traffic congestion, speed cameras and 46 degree heat, together with a few evening trips to flex the cars’ muscles. The focus of the week was on the newly launched Panamera,

46

the entry level sibling of the range, which provides 330 horsepower from a 2.9 liter twin turbo-charged V6 power unit, comparing this to the slightly more mature models of the Panamera 4S (440hp) and the Panamera Turbo (550hp). The Turbo was the first out of the garage, immediately evoking memories of the driving in Dubai earlier in the year, and reviving the huge grin that I had during that first encounter; it is a truly special car that certainly delivers on the promise of the sportiest vehicle in its class. The redesign of the exterior provided a more 911-like shape and certainly delivered a refreshing update to the original model which cured my long term aversion to the model. However, one of the main focal points

Motors

in this huge design overhaul was on the interior and the handling, common to all models, which has elevated the Panamera range to almost iconic levels in its class. The changes have certainly raised the bar, when comparing the cars to their rivals, and have certainly become the target for others to meet. For now, most especially the ‘Business Class’ interior of the Panamera is hard to beat, especially when matched to the performance and handling that all of the models deliver. One of my complaints in the older generation was the sheer number of buttons in the central console, these have now thankfully been replaced by a completely touch sensitive interface focused on the huge 12.5-inch touchscreen and a glass central console, the latter vibrating when a ‘button’ is touched; very cool! Within the Instrument Console a further two 7 inch screens bracket the central rev counter and offer a range of dynamic functions that can be configured to replicate the content on the main screen, as well as being home to the digital speedo, engine gauges, cruise control functions and navigation. The completely redesigned interior is an audiophile and technophobes dream, coming with a choice of audio systems that would rival most cinemas. The rear seat passengers are equally well looked after with their own console that is also able to interact with many of the systems available to the driver as well as controlling the incredible seat massage and ventilation functions (if fitted). Other than the power differential between the 4S and Turbo there is little to choose between the top two

With slightly less horsepower the car belies its size and delivers a perfect balance of functionality and performance which is perfect for day-today motoring.

models, however, with only rear wheel drive, the standard Panamera offers a great combination of power and driving experience. All models are fitted with the 8-speed, dual clutch transmission, which provides an effortlessly smooth driving experience whether in manual or automatic modes. The Active Suspension Management System can be set for both a comfortable and sedate drive, to sharper, harder sports settings when driving more aggressively. The cars I tested had all of the driver assistance options installed, Lane Change Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and InnoDrive, which when combined with the urban conditions of central Manama gave a much more realistic test of Porsche’s innovation in these fundamental areas of self-driving Gulf Insider October 2017

vehicles; disconcerting at first, but delivering utter amazement in the end. The morning drive to work, a loosely descriptive term describing the turgid experience of crawling through traffic from home to the office in the city, became a painless experience with the plethora of electronics and sensors in the car removing the stress of StopStart traffic queues and traffic lights. I would not hesitate in recommending these options, which provide a very real revelation of how close we have come to the era of autonomous motoring, helping to reduce some of the rigours of inner city driving! Around town, there is some sense of frustration when driving the Turbo, and even the 4S, as both have extremely potent engines that beg for the open, twisty roads of Europe where they were brought to life, however, this is the Panamera’s playground! With slightly less horsepower the car belies its size and delivers a perfect balance of functionality and performance which is perfect for day-to-day motoring, most especially in the largely urban environment of Bahrain. In reflecting the week I spent with these cars, the new Panamera has truly redefined itself, both in its design and engineering levels, delivering a rapid, 48

Gulf Insider October 2017

comfortable Grand Tourer capable of whisking four adults effortlessly and in comfort across any country. This new model very much moves the Panamera closer to its goal of delivering a four door 911 experience, with the added benefit of delivering driver and passengers a refined cocoon of sports saloon luxury! Candidly comparing the cars, I firmly believe that the balance of fuel economy, power, handling and price of the new V6 offers the perfect balance for driving within the constraints of modern day roads and urban living. The

4S and Turbo offer adrenaline levels above the lower powered car, though with the speed restrictions and traffic conditions we all live within, the entry level model of the Panamera range is perfectly matched with the achievable driving experience of both city and outof-town driving; almost faultless. The starting prices for the models are Panamera (BHD 40, 600), Panamera 4S (BHD 51,900) and the Panamera Turbo (BHD 71,900).

Mia Ash:

Cyber Warfare Honey Trap

S

ex is, and frankly always was, a weapon of great influence. In the old days of espionage, spy agencies would utilize seduction to lure their target into giving sensitive information or place themselves into a compromising position for extortion purposes. The name for this activity is generally referred to as a “honey trap” exploit. Historical examples include Mata Hari, a Dutch operative of Germany in World War II with conquests spreading across numerous French and German officials, or Ellen Rometsch, a suspected East German spy at the Quorum Club in Washington, D.C. Lest you think seduction in spy-craft was limited to the ladies, the former head of East German Intelligence, Markus Wolf, used “Romeos” to cozy up to female secretaries of high ranking officials to withdraw classified information. The use of traditional spies to seduce a target bears considerable financial expense, risks physical safety of the operative, and may result in political embarrassment should the spy be exposed. As such, seductive measures have evolved with the times. Instead of pillow talk to entice a target into divulging company secrets, drugging a drink and then compromising mobile phones or laptops while the target slept was en vogue a few years back. The current trend takes a large virtual step away from physical contact by exploiting everyone’s favorite intimate pastime - social media. Dell SecureWorks Counter Threat Unit (CTU) reported such a plot last month targeting mid-level energy sector employees in the Middle East and North Africa; in particular Saudi Arabia.

Enter Mia Ash, an alluring young London-based student photographer and amateur model. Mia is working on an exercise which requires her to reach out to people around the globe. She instinctively uses her LinkedIn account to initiate these queries and establish contact. Mia and her new acquaintance engage in professional chats that slowly evolve into personal interests like photography and traveling. Over the course of several weeks, Mia extends the relationship through a Facebook friend request, then email, and finally WhatsApp. Mia asks for help completing another assignment by sending a Microsoft Excel document, “Copy of Photography Survey.xlsm” to her new friend. The document is sent via his personal email address, but Mia explains the survey should be opened while at work so that it functions correctly. If you haven’t already figured it out, Mia Ash is a fake persona created by an Advanced Persistent Threat assessed by SecureWorks CAT as COBALT GYPSY. The Excel document installs a remote access Trojan called PupyRAT which creates a backdoor into the company computer network to steal information.

The use of a fake social media profile is known as cat-phishing and blends quite effectively with a honey trap exploit. Mia Ash’s social media profile was carefully crafted over the course of a year with routine updates on Facebook and blog posts. Photos were taken from a talented Romanian photographer without her knowledge. With little financial investment and political risk, the misuse of social media as a cyber weapon is likely to increase. Protecting yourself from such attacks involves careful screening of prospective friend requests. It’s always safer to know someone outside of social media before connecting virtually. Regardless, don’t ever mix business with pleasure. Keep your organization’s inner-workings outside of chat and never use company resources to engage in social media for personal reasons. Be especially suspicious of odd requests and never forget the persona on the other end may not be who they claim to be. So who is the next Mia Ash persona to weaponize Facebook? Open your friend requests and find out.

First Look at the

Nokia 8

Gulf Insider went to Park Hyatt Dubai to check out the new Nokia 8 phone!

I

’m not one to get excited about new technology. (I’ve been given an Ipad, a Zune, and a Kindle fire by kind folks who thought I would be excited—but I’m just not). I’ve always said all I need is a laptop and an internet connection—that is, until I found I needed a camera, for all those unique moments that I just have to take a snapshot of. However, I don’t want to be carrying too many things around, (some people I know have 2 or 3 phones—how do they keep track of their technology?), and was hoping I could get a high quality camera in a phone so I can save space in my bag. Et voila! The new Nokia 8 is the answer to my prayers. Slim, sleek, and tech-savvy, my heart literally skipped a beat when I opened my box and found the phone inside. Looks-wise, this

Crafted from a single piece of aluminium, the color a slate metallic blue with a minimalist design, it’s definitely an accessory piece. The tech guys at the office scrutinized the phone and said the Zeiss camera that it has, has one of the sharpest, clearest cameras ever. And indeed, I

can take photos from the phone in dim light, artificial light, or even outside and the photos come out looking good. Not only that, you can take photos and videos from two perspectives—the cameraman, and the actor’s, a trend that Nokia calls the “bothie”. They believe that this is a revolution in storytelling and will change the way that we take photos and videos. The Nokia 8 is the first Nokia Android making it cleaner, safer, and faster. You get the bare minimum of apps, so you can pick and choose which ones work for you and your lifestyle. The battery lasts for a long time, so you don’t get stuck at odd moments with your phone battery dead or dying. Its functional, it’s slim, and it’s fast. Three things you want your phone to be.
