Breitling DC3 touched down in Bahrain The legendary aircraft made its way to Manama to the delight of aviation enthusiasts.

F

rom March to September 2017, the Breitling DC 3 will be flying around the world carrying with it a precious cargo. The 77 year old Breitling DC3 stopped at Manama during its record-breaking tour where members of the media as well as several VIPS got to board the plane and take a look at an immaculately restored Breitling DC3. Unfortunately the scheduled flight was stopped at the last minute by the Ministry of Interior citing security concerns. The tour will run through several stages encompassing the Middle East, India, South-East Asia, North America, and Europe. It will begin and end in Switzerland, starting from Geneva in March and winding up in September at Breitling Sion Airshow 2017.

All Roads lead to Basel The world’s most important marketplace and trendsetting show for the watch and jewellery industry put on another great show.

T

he history of Baselworld dates back to almost one hundred years ago. Baselworld has evolved from a classical trade fair to an international platform for watch and jewellery companies around the world. It has distinguished itself as the only show that puts together all the key players in the industry from watchmakers to jewelers; diamond, pearl and gemstone dealers all the way to machine and industry suppliers. Organized each spring in the city of Basel, Switzerland; it comprises about 2,100 exhibitors from more than 45 countries; the show itself attracts over 94,000 visitors. This year, Baselworld 2017 (which was held on March 23 to 30, 2017) welcomed renowned and prestigious buyers, international press, and of course the industry’s key players for its annual show.

Hublot

T

he Classic Fusion’s name is fitting as there has never been such a fine example of the fusion of timelessness and innovation in a Hublot watch. The House of Rubinacci, supplied the fabrics; a collection of tartans—squared coloured wool weaves from the seventies—that they reinvented and made part of the Classic Fusion chronograph. The result is unparalleled elegance “La vera sprezzatura!” Luca Rubinacci said “I didn’t think that it was possible to put wool on the straps and dial of a watch. But, Hublot managed it and the result is better than I could have hoped for. We have achieved a balanced watch, with a pattern effect that is neither too bold nor too light.”

Watch to Watch Each month, our publisher, Nick Cooksey, reviews a watch from his personal collection. This month he talks about his Audemars Piguet watch.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver Forged Carbon

A

udemars Piguet is one of the very top Swiss watch brands, and the iconic Royal Oak has been about since 1972 when the legendary Swiss watch designer Gerald Genta was given less than 24 hours to come up with the design for an “unprecedented steel sports watch for all occasions with the most beautiful finish ever seen”. Genta, later said that it was the masterpiece of his career. The Offshore was launched in 1993. The case had a size of 42 mm, a standard size today but at the time this was considered big and the watch was nicknamed “The Beast”. When introduced at Basel many purists were disappointed, including Gérald Genta who invaded the Audemars Piguet booth shouting that his Royal Oak had been “completely destroyed”. Despite this the Offshore, like the Royal Oak,

16

became a massive success. This is my most valuable timepiece. Introduced in 2012 but no longer in production, it has a forged carbon case produced in-house from heated and compressed carbon thread. The result is a light and very strong material with a marbled look that feels satiny smooth to

This is a dive watch I’d never take diving. touch. No two cases are the same - so every watch is unique. The bezel is ceramic, the solid case back is steel. The markers and screws on the bezel are steel, and the rubber strap is fitted to a titanium buckle. The movement is the in-house developed

caliber 3120. When this watch came out there was already a Royal Oak Diver in steel priced at about $15,000. In forged carbon the price almost doubled! I like how the yellow breaks up the black, and the case and bezel catch the light making them look different shades of grey. Non-chronograph versions of the Royal Oak Offshore aren’t common so this watch is a good option for those who like the overall design but prefer a simpler dial. This is a dive watch I’d never take diving. Yes, I trust it can do the job but it is just too valuable to risk losing. I‘ve already lost a watch diving (fortunately an inexpensive Casio) so I know it can happen.

Hesitant Stability Gulf Insider investigates how Bahrain is trying to move from an oil-based to a diversified economy.

A

usterity measures in the GCC have already taken effect and Bahrain has been among the countries hit by low oil prices. Social unrest continues in the face of ever growing budget cuts, and this combined with an unstable political climate has dampened investor confidence in the country. The IMF and World Bank has estimated that GDP growth will slow down to 1.8% in 2017 from the 2% growth last 2016. However, at the GCC Financial Summit in Manama last month, at which CEOs of key national agencies including the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) and Bahrain Bourse spoke, little of this bleak background picture was sketched. CBB governor Rasheed Mohammed Al Maraj forecasts 2017 non-oil GDP growth to be 3.5 percent – a drop from his projected 3.6 percent for 2016, the official figures for which have not been finalized, and a decline from the EDB’s own third quarter figure. Despite that he believes that this shows “encouraging resilience” for Bahrain saying “The country has managed to adapt to new economic realities”. Forward-looking indicators of business confidence (including employment and business optimism) suggest that activity, while somewhat subdued, remains in a firmly expansionary mode. The political will behind a major economic paradigm shift in the GCC has become increasingly evident as exemplified by the Saudi Vision 2030, and the National Transformation Program (Bahrain Economic Quarterly, 2016). Countries around the GCC are continuing their efforts to rationalize public finances.

Future Progress

Photograph by : Shareef Panhatt

In addition, the region is envisaging an unprecendented pipeline of infrastructure investments. Historically, lower oil prices have tended to translate into slower project implementation as well as suspension, but that is not the case now. EDB’s Chief Economic Adviser, Dr. Jarmo Kortilaine says that the government has identified five non-oil

industries expected to drive Bahrain’s future growth, and that is where it will prioritize investment promotion efforts. These five areas are financial services, industrial and manufacturing, logistics, tourism and information communications technology (ICT). Financial services is an established sector in Bahrain with a ready pool of highly-skilled people “and it makes sense to build on your strengths”, Kortilaine said. “In some ways, Bahraini banks were better positioned for this [global] economic downturn than some of their regional peers because their loan-to-deposit ratios were lower and there was a fair bit of spare liquidity in the system, which, now that growth has strengthened and confidence has increased, has been progressively mobilized. While all main segments of the economy made positive contributions to growth, the role of the non-oil private sector remained dominant. 2015 economic data highlights the continued momentum of economic diversification including infrastructure development. CBRE Middle East Director of Research and Consultancy James Lynn said “Growing demand for product from an expanding resident population at 3.3 percent per annum and an inbound tourist market of circa 15 million in 2016 have combined to reignite real estate development across multiple sectors”. Real estate schemes set for 20

Gulf Insider April 2017

The government has identified five non-oil industries expected to drive Bahrain’s future growth, and that is where it will prioritize investment promotion efforts. completion in 2017 include the Wyndham Grand hotel in Bahrain Bay, The Avenues retail cluster at Bahrain Bay Corniche, Bahrain Financial Harbour and Bahrain World Trade Centre. In the mixed-use segment, the Bahrain Marina scheme is due for completion by 2020, while the 6-metre square foot Investment Gateway at Hidd by Manara Development has just completed the first phase, bringing to market a new slice of logistics and light industrial real estate. The second phase is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Tourism Hub? Because of a busy event calendar in 2016 that included the Bahrain Gaming

Experience, Bahrain International Air Show (total number of orders reached USD9bn, more than triple the 2014 figure), Bahrain International Garden Show, Bahrain Food Festival, Bahrain International Book Fair, Autumn Fair; and various other exhibitions that took place in the Bahrain International Exhibition; tourism has benefited from record visitor numbers. As per the EDB, total number of arrivals to Bahrain increased by 8% with around 14.5 mn visitors. In recognition of the strength of the tourism sector in the country, Bahrain has been named the “Capital of Gulf Tourism” by GCC ministers highlighting this sector’s growth in Bahrain. A report by Oxford Business Group (OBG) last month highlighted Bahrain’s appeal for foreign investors, noting that it has continued to rise up the World Bank’s international ranking for ease of doing business despite competition from GCC peers. Bahrain ranked 63rd in 2016, up from 66th in 2015 and beaten in the GCC only by the UAE, which ranked 26th. “While Bahrain has had to cut public spending and reduce subsidies to accommodate a widening fiscal deficit, the country’s strengths, which include an educated workforce and established regulatory framework, make it an attractive draw for investors. The kingdom’s longer term prospects look bright,” OBG CEO Andrew Jeffreys said.

Gold Coast Adventure In January, Gulf Insider visited the Gold Coast and had the adventure of a lifetime.

A

nybody worried about US visa bans can hop on over to Australia’s Gold Coast. A lot nearer than the States, it has the most amazing weather, actively friendly people who will make you feel welcome, and a lot to see and do. We had a great week in Australia and were able to squeeze in a lot of activities, but we hardly scratched the surface of all the adventures to be had in the Gold Coast. From our arrival when we went for a drive around the points of interest in the coast including the Gold Coast Seaway, Broadwater Parklands & Surfer’s Paradise, which is an iconic beachfront; we knew we were in for a treat. Soon after landing in Australia’s Gold Coast we were dropped off at the Aurora Spa Retreat, one of the Gold Coast’s top day spas located at the Palazzo Versace and had ourselves a wonderful post-flight massage followed by a Couture High Tea. It was a relaxing intro into what would turn out to be an interesting salvo of events.

A Grand Old Time Rather than stay in a hotel, we rented a beautiful house located across from the beach, through Elite Holiday Homes. This proved to be a smart choice as the property had loads of space and even its own home cinema and separate games room with a snooker table. We enjoyed a lot more privacy than we would have in a hotel. On some of the days we hired an amazing caterer who prepared for us the most delicious Cordon Bleu meals. On our first evening we went to the Night Quarter, which is like a Bohemian night market, full of music, food, and fun things to see, do, and buy. It’s a very family orientated place and not unlike Block 338 in Adliya during the annual Nest community festival, albeit on a much bigger scale. Gulf Insider April 2017

Superb weather, great dining, and outdoor adventures are just some of the attractions.

A lot nearer than the States, it has the most amazing weather, actively friendly people who will make you feel welcome, and a lot to see and do. Mt. Tamborine

From high-street to high-glamour. The following day was devoted to seeing the horses and we went to the Magic Millions Race Day, one of the world’s richest races; staying in the VIP Marquee. We dressed up as fabulously as we could. The place was just bursting with excitement and you can tell that it is a high-stakes day. It was exciting to watch the horses jockeying it up for a pole position and even if you know nothing at all about horse racing, watching them up close and being with the crowd of race goers 24

Gulf Insider April 2017

is an electrifying treat and you’ll find yourself clapping and cheering before you know it.

Good Food, Great Adventure During our stay, we experienced many of the restaurants that the Gold Coast has to offer. This place has the most delicious meats and the finest beef. Gastronomic adventures and culinary delights abound. The weather throughout our trip was beautiful. It was in the 30’s with a nice

breeze. The evenings were stunning with different cloud formations. We would cross the road from our house and take long walks along the beach, witnessing colours that looked like they belonged in an oil painting, almost too beautiful to be real. Many others did the exact same thing, when you live within such natural beauty it makes no sense to be indoors. Families, couples, and lone walkers would be stretching their legs while completely respecting each other’s privacy. Everything was picturesque and Instagram worthy,

Travel

even the houses were lined up along the waterfront like a scene from an old painting. We had plans to go on a hot air balloon one dawn to watch the sunrise. We were up at 3am so we can be in the air by 4am. However, a tropical storm hit and the balloon company had to cancel our ride. Their level of service is astonishing as they tried to call us but couldn’t reach us, and instead drove all the way to our accommodation to inform us that our trip is cancelled. So we instead went back to bed and on waking up hired a 10.5 metre, fully-skippered catamaran—The Spirit of Gwonda and went sailing around the Gold Coast’s beautiful beaches. The catamaran is awesome, everything you can think of is provided for, drinks, snacks, plus stand-up paddleboards and kayaks, in case you have an urge to try it. It’s a great way to spend 2-3 hours!

Dreamworld The next day saw us on a chauffeured 1965 VW Kombi—it’s like being in a time machine! This was our ride as we went to Dreamworld—Australia’s largest theme park. Dreamworld has a lot of attractions and fun rides, some super exciting—and some borderline scary (Tower of Terror II anyone?). Those who are not into rides can instead cuddle a koala and or go on the Tiger Walk VIP experience—which we did. It was definitely a good idea to have lunch after, and not before, going to the theme park. We went to the Ruffles Lodge & Spa, which is a beautiful hinterland (translated as “the land behind”) property overlooking the Gold

Coast’s iconic surf breaks. The rolling hills and views were particularly worth the drive. Another day, another adventure. This time in a Hummer four wheel drive. We went to Mt. Tamborine (the third oldest national park in the world), where we took a short trek to the rainforest, which ended in delicious wine tasting at the Gallery Walk. This was followed by a Mt. Tamborine cooking school crash course where the owner, Chef Terri, walked us through a “Best of Tamborine” themed menu, using fresh local produce. Needless to say, the food was delicious.

Style Stop Another delicious meal awaited us at dinner which we had at Cuccina Vivo, located in Jupiter’s Hotel & Casino, our next stop. We met with Susie McWatt Forbes, a “fairy-god stylist” at the Pacific Fair, one of Australia’s major shopping centers. People can stay and relax at this shop, and they can book the experience for their families. Suzy will help you to dress up and look your best for whatever occasion and whatever the weather. She made us look more dapper than ever. It was a great trip and we highly recommend it for travelers coming from the Middle East. Superb weather, great dining, and outdoor adventures are just some of the attractions. Seeking the world’s

T

he world’s most beautiful camel will be crowned with a staggering $30 million prize at a Saudi pageant-style contest. More than 300,000 of the desert animals will be judged on their features when they descend on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the King Abdulaziz Camels Festival, which runs till 15th April. The mammals must abide by a strict set of criteria for ‘untouched natural beauty’ - which advises having curly hair, pert ears, long lashes and a high, perfectly positioned hump. Festival spokesperson Dr. Talal Al Torifi said: ‘Judges look for untouched natural beauty with prizes awarded throughout the festival. ‘Camels are assessed in five categories, according to breed and colour.’ From the Al Wadah white camel to, the Al Majahateer dark camel and the Al Homor reddish, brown camel, various features considered most beautiful to each breed are closely assessed to determine the deserving winners. These include the size of the camel’s head, whether the lips cover the teeth,

the length of its neck, to the roundness of its hump. The criteria also covers the size of its eyes, how the long lashes are, how the nose droops, whether the ears stand back, how high the hump is and where the hump sits. Judged by a committee of selected Bedouin, winning camels have become highly desirable, fetching millions of pounds in price whilst also leading to dramatic increase in prices of camels across the stock market. As well as parades for the most beautiful camel, the King Abdulaziz Camels Festival also includes entertainment such as poetry, folk songs (shalat), feasts and camel auctions throughout the month long festivities. All aspects of the festival are noted, from entrance of the camel, to conduct of the owner, festive happenings and attendee acceptance. This annual national festival, which runs from March 19 to April 15, looks to strengthen traditional practices, connecting the new generations to the old as a reflection of Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision.

Italian Brunch at

Rosso’s Gulf Insider thoroughly enjoyed brunch at this charming Italian restaurant.

R

osso’s has a family oriented feel: cozy, comfortable, and nostalgic. There’s an accordion player and a clown who blows balloons and makes magic tricks to keep children entertained. In addition, it’s right next to the dancing fountains which will amuse kids to no end. The bright and airy venue can accommodate both large and small groups. There are big tables for multiple families, and some tables where people can eat alone comfortably. We went for brunch on a very rainy Saturday, and we could see the rain from the big gear windows which made for a cozier experience – wet and grey outside, 28

with stone flooring. There are various specialty food stands and stations offering cheeses, and dried meats, a pasta station where you can get custom-made pasta to suit your personal tastes. The cold meat platters held some of the best pepperoni and salami we have tasted which went delightfully with some of the aged cheeses. There was an assortment of freshly baked breads and rolls and attentive waiters supplying diners with drinks of their choice including a selection of wines and beers. You can order pizza delivered fresh from the oven to your table. Every plate is visually a work of art with color,

texture, and flavor perfectly presented. This is combined with the excellent service from the crew of Rosso. The food is deliciously fresh. I have always loved pickled onions, and I tasted these from the buffet that had been marinated in a spicy honey sauce. They were amazing. I also tried the Italian meatballs - perfection. The details and planning that went into this buffet was fantastic – and we felt like we were in Italy. Finally, we indulged ourselves at the ice cream station which featured authentic Italian gelato. We each had two ice creams and even though we are great vanilla fans, the cheesecake ice cream turned out to be stellar and is highly recommended. The toppings added to the experience (we went for grated white chocolate and dried cherries). Towards the end of our brunch, Theodor Rudiferia, the Italian Executive Head Chef, went around and asked us how we liked our meals. We assured him that we had liked them very much. It’s this kind of care that makes us want to go here again. And for only BD24 net, or BD17 with soft drinks only, it’s reasonably priced. Saturday brunch is from 12-4PM.

The freshest ingredients, finely cut fish, rice, and vegetables plus a tangy soy sauce to round out the flavor is a great introduction to Japanese food; or if you’re a connoisseur, it’s a way to fall in love with the classics again. Creative yet authentic delicacies (try the green tea tiramisu for dessert), a stunning, sophisticated ambiance; and exceptional service make Sushi Nights at Imari a winner for Monday Happy Hours. Sparadise Maisa Sheikh’s passion for wellness and beauty inspired her to create Sparadise.

Maisa Sheikh

M

aisa Sheikh, Managing Director of Sparadise is a Yemen-born entrepreneur who was inspired to create and develop four spas in Bahrain throughher own experiences and travels. She reminisced about her hometown saying “Our own experiences of beauty was homemade. We did our own threading and waxing and made our own lipsticks using beetroot and wax”. She

34

Gulf Insider April 2017

remembered seeing all those models and celebrities on TV and questioning why she didn’t have access to the kind of care/ treatments that they had, because as she said “I knew they were doing something more than I did to look like that”. In her travels, she found out about Lulur, a Javanese beauty exfoliation ritual using turmeric, honey, yoghurt, and lemon. This is traditionally used on brides to be of the royal family for 40

days prior to their wedding, to cleanse, smooth, soften, and rejuvenate the skin. When she came back to Bahrain she looked for this treatment everywhere, even going to a luxury spa and asking them to create that experience for her. Her therapist told her that as they were in a hotel spa, they could not deviate from the treatments given, but she continued “I could do it on my own, I know how to do it, if only I had a sponsor”. Maisa immediately said “I will

Hotel

sponsor you” and the rest, as they say, is history. Maisa had no experience in the spa business, but she knew what she wanted. She spoke to her husband, the Managing Director of the Elite Group and asked him if there was a space for a spa in any of the Elite Hotels. His first response was not very encouraging as he said that they are not yet ready to open a spa in any of their hotels. But that same day, he called her back and said that the supermarket project (that was supposed to go up in Elite Resort) was cancelled and she can have that place for her spa. On hindsight, she was convinced that everything happened for a reason and it turned out to be the start of 10 long years of passion in the industry. A civil engineer by profession, Maisa made use of her education to create the first Sparadise at Elite Resort and Spa, Muharraq. They dug into the shell of the supermarket and created an exquisite spa paradise on 3 levels.

It’s just like a Cinderella story where I had a fairy godmother and some help from the birds and the mice. A Cinderella Story Maisa said “It’s just like a Cinderella story where I had a fairy godmother and some help from the birds and the mice to help me make my dream come true. I knew nothing about starting a spa business but I was passionate about education. I studied whatever I could: Accounting, Spa Management, Interior Design. I am blessed to be affiliated with three cultures: Arabic, Indian, and

Yemeni, which has greatly influenced my life. I also traveled a lot, especially in the Far East, where some of the best spas can be found”. Sparadise has been designed to excite the senses, and you can see from the paintings on the walls, to the spacing in the furniture, to the texture of the fabrics chosen that everything here is part of a grand design. Maisa chose everything herself saying “If you were going to build a nursery for your child, would you hire an interior decorator? No, you want to do it yourself because you understand what you want and how you want your child to feel”. Emphasis on personalized treatment calibrated to every client’s needs has made Sparadise famous. For instance, their Luxurious Chocolate Scrub features natural, edible chocolate whereas in other spas they claim to use organic chocolate in their scrubs, but it can’t be eaten. The treatment rooms are also exquisitely tailored to guest’s needs, with the latest massage bed with temperature and recline control. There’s even a bowl of gardenias in water that guests can look at as they lie facedown for a massage. It’s these exquisite touches that create true relaxation in a guest’s experience. But the warmth and hospitality with which they shower their guests don’t end after a session. As Maisa said, “It’s an affair we have with our clients. We take responsibility for their well-being. We have to continue striving to make them feel better”. To those who feel that going to the salon or spa is a luxury, think again. Maisa says “Well-being is not a luxury. When we neglect our bodies, we come down with illness and usually spend more. But if we are kind to our bodies and our minds, we can live healthier and fuller lives”. Gulf Insider April 2017

W

hat does being Lead Repair Technology Engineer for General Electric entail?

I work as a consultant/advisor for engineers and technicians who refurbish gas turbine components that are used in power plants all over the Middle East and Africa. I resolve technical and quality issues implementing projects that drive productivity and bring savings to the company and I change current practices to better ones. I also audit the processes and procedures and put plans for correcting and improving the daily work to avoid any nonconformance or escapes.

What are the challenges of your job? And what would you say is the biggest achievement of your career so far? My job requires me to drive the culture of change and correct mistakes. These two can bring about a lot of conflict with other employees so being persuasive and influential are essential. I consider joining General Electric through the Edison Engineering Development Program (one of the 38

Gulf Insider April 2017

best graduate programs globally) a big achievement. I did 5 rotational assignments globally and completed different leadership and technical trainings. I used to work for 9 hours and then spend the remaining hours of my day studying and doing assignments.

Technology is my passion and working with robots and 3D printing in my job gives me the push to innovate and be creative. Your job deals with innovation and coming up with new ways to do things. Where do you get your inspiration? What was the most cutting-edge innovation you have come up with? Technology is my passion and working with robots and 3D printing in my job

gives me the push to innovate and be creative. My inspiration comes from helping the people around me. I try to introduce new ways of doing things to ease the life of my coworkers. I enjoyed introducing a robotic measuring arm that was programmed to measure components instead of traditional height gages and calipers. I felt happy when I replaced typical tools and fixtures with 3D printed ones. However, shifting from manual welding to laser cladding was a game changer for the company because we saved time and ensured better quality of products.

Why did you join Manama Shapers? I always loved to give back to the community and help others. Manama shapers is a place where I found likeminded educated people from different backgrounds who are passionate to come up with new and sustainable ideas that will benefit Bahrain. I wanted to be part of a group where I feel empowered to introduce new initiatives that can drive change and influence others and I found that in Manama shapers.

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT INTEGRATING MODERN PR WITH TRADITIONAL PR

W

ith my 10 years of experience in the field of PR, I kept realizing year after year that the PR scene keeps changing, and you have to keep up or you and your company (or clients) will be left behind. Due to technology, the Internet, and social media, PR – just like any other discipline- is in a continuous state of flux. Every day we hear about a new “breakthrough” and a new trend that will “sweep the nation” and “change the way we do business”. All that big talk aside, there are definitely new tools, techniques, and platforms that PR can benefit from and utilize to achieve set goals and objectives, sometimes they can even surpass those that fall under traditional PR. From social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, as well as their “Live” feature, to blogging, videos, influencers, and focus on content, all these have paved the way for PR professionals to create more comprehensive strategies, campaigns, and PR plans that can help in reaching a wider and larger audience more efficiently and effectively. That’s not to say all traditional PR tools, techniques, and activities are obsolete. But a smart and savvy PR professional should find the right fit and combination between traditional PR and modern PR. A mindset that is open to change, creativity, adapting and adopting new ideas and concepts is your

40

Gulf Insider April 2017

best friend at this point. Then, a comprehensive and thorough evaluation should take into account the nature of the business, its goals and objectives, its target audience, and thereafter, a sound conclusion will be made where you will be able to determine what mix to use between the ol’ traditional PR and modern PR. Remember: It is not about trying to prove that your brand is hip and cool and knows its way around the latest trends. There is no pressure on you where you feel obliged to adopt the modern tools and activities. Always put your brand, your product or service, your customers, and your goals and objectives in mind when devising your next campaign and/or strategy.

Coming Soon: The GCC Hyperloop The Hyperloop system is a new mode of transportation, capable of connecting to all modes of existing transportation and helping individuals be anywhere and move anything with on-demand autonomous transport boasting faster-than-airlines’ speed. What does this mean for the GCC? For one thing, travel between major cities in the Gulf Region could take less than an hour. Hyperloop One estimates that around 4,000 vehicles travel every day between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with traffic congestion in Dubai costing the economy $800 million in lost working hours. Reducing this commute to 12 minutes opens a whole new realm of options and could unlock economic value 3.5 to 4 times over high speed rail.

As a solution to the existing traffic issue in the Kingdom, Member of Parliament Jalal Kadhim submitted a parliamentary proposal to impose a fee of BD100 on non-Bahraini drivers to use the roads of Bahrain. He stressed that revenues earned through such a law would contribute in financing infrastructure and key projects. Kadhim had also submitted several proposals to increase the state revenues earlier, such as imposing a BD400 fee on non-Bahraini pupils studying in public schools.

This month - INSTALLMENT LOANS AJ Question: I bought a laptop for 500 BD from a retailer that offers an installment plan and I agreed with them to pay the premium over a period of 2 years. However, after losing my job I could not pay the monthly installments and I was surprised to find out that I was being sued by the retailer company, claiming 1200 BD premium. Citing that because I failed to pay the premium on the due date, an interest payment was added. Please help; I don’t know what to do? I’m sure this is unfair! AJ Answer: According to the precedents held in previous court

proceedings these types of transactions fall under the scope of Article 81 of the Bahrain Law of Commerce, which states that “A total interest charged by the creditor shall not exceed the principal amount on the basis of which interest is calculated. This provision applies to debts with a repayment period not exceeding seven years. Any contradicting stipulation shall be null and void.” In your case, it is evident that the total interest payment (1200 BD) imposed by the creditor is in excess of the principal debt amount (500 BD). Moreover, the

agreed repayment period is for two years which does not exceed the seven years statutory period. Accordingly the stipulation is null and void to the extent to which they increased the interest in excess of the principal amount. On this basis, you could request that the court declare the stipulation contained in the contract to be null and void.

The new battleground Cyber warfare is the new battleground with government, business, and individual citizens square within the cross-hairs of malicious attackers. Gulf Insider sat down with Ryan Ernst, Enterprise Consultant at Sword and Shield Security to find out more about cyber warfare and how you can protect yourself.

A

cyber awakening for the Gulf occurred when Shamoon (a modular computer virus used for cyber sabotage) was unleashed upon Saudi Aramco) in 2012. The attack wiped out 30,000 hard drives and forced the company to rely on fax machines in order to continue their business. A long and uneasy silence followed during which the calamity was all but forgotten. The quiet shattered when two waves of a Shamoon variant erupted this past November and January. This time the brunt of the attack lay on Saudi

government agencies and the Sadara Petrochemical company with several additional organizations also affected. Future attacks will undoubtedly wield even more advanced techniques to compromise computer networks. Shamoon marked a beginning, not an end. Social engineering tactics aimed at gaining access to company and personal online accounts are growing in sophistication. Ransomware, a malicious software which encrypts your files then seeks payment to render the decryption key, ran rampant in the West last year and is gaining momentum here

Ryan Ernst www.swordshield.com in the Gulf. The Internet of Things brings both fascination and concern due to a general disregard by manufacturers to securely design their products. It is of critical importance for the GCC to invest in cyber security and equally important for individuals to become cyber-aware to protect themselves from criminal activity.

More on cyber-security next month.

Powerful engines with low exhaust emissions and comfortable suspensions with selective damping guarantee a sporty and agile driving experience. Featuring a flowing design language, including a “diamond grille” design with clean body sides combined with an uncluttered rear end, this is a very sophisticated car having a smooth,

sinuous profile. Riding on a 4.4 inch longer wheelbase, the new coupe is 4.8 inches longer overall, three inches wider, and an inch and a quarter taller than its predecessor. The rear-seat room has increased commensurately, with two individual seats providing better leg and headroom than before. 135 kW (184 hp) to 245 kW (333 hp). Further engine variants will follow. All the models available at market launch are standardized with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, which allows fast gearshifts along with lower engine speeds. This has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise.

Powered by Porsche The all new four cylinder Porsche Macan

T

he 2017 Porsche Macan is a supreme all-rounder with excellent interior space and utility and a 7-speed dualclutch transmission. The four cylinder car is priced below 20,000 dinars which is a fantastic buy. I didn’t know what to expect when I took this Macan out for a spin. Dynamically it’s ahead of the Audi Q5. It can achieve zero – 100kph in 4.4 seconds (the Audi SQ5 takes 5.2 seconds). It also has a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline 4-cylinder that puts out 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Porsche offers a torquevectoring system, with an electronically locking differential across the rear axle that gives precise control over power delivery. Though it may not be as powerful as the GT3, it certainly drives like a Porsche. At first glance, the Macan promises both Porsche performance and SUV practicality. Styled like the bigger Porsche Cayenne, it is however scaled down to more urban friendly

46

Luxury and Utility Inside, this car screams sports luxury. It’s beautiful. The car I tested came with red and black leather interiors which looked beautiful. Utility-wise, you’ll find that the Macan behaves like a useful

family wagon capable of carrying up to five passengers—though four would be more comfortable. I very much enjoyed driving this car, I found the raised driving position—high but not too high, combined with sports car performance, to my liking. Though I drove around Manama, and not on a racetrack, the Macan performed with plenty of power. The Macan’s rear bench splits so that a slim middle section folds independently to create an armrest. All three sections fold down to expand the cargo space and to render the Macan a two-seater, in true Porsche style. With the rear seat up, there’s 17.7 cubic feet of space; seats folded, it’s 53 cubic feet.

Good Buy And if you like off-roading, well then you’re in for a treat. The Macan has 7.8 inches of ground clearance, which rises to just over 9 inches with the optional air suspension, great for off-roading. So why would you choose a Macan

instead of the larger Cayenne? Well, If you like driving the Cayenne, you’ll love the Macan’s lighter weight and lower center of gravity. And, there’s sufficient space to stow luggage. It makes more sense for many people who don’t require so much interior space than buying a bigger Cayenne or Range Rover Sport.

Sleek, STYLISH S90 The luxury sedan market raised the bar with the Volvo S90.

O

ne of my favorite ways to test a new car is to take it to the Manama Causeway, and floor the accelerator. The S90 was very impressive, and very sporty throughout the drive. The lights stayed on, which looks very sleek and beautiful at night, a nice little touch. Not surprisingly, the S90 is one of the finalists for the North American Car of the Year. (The others were the Bolt electric car and the Hyundai Genesis G90). The new S90 is the Volvo cars’ entry ticket to the premium sedan club. A luxury, mid-size sedan, the inside is attractive with a clean and uncluttered layout; the cabin inspired by the openness and calm of a Scandinavian home. Designed to engage your senses, the S90 uses nappa leather and natural wood to create a tactile experience. The

48

Gulf Insider April 2017

driving position in the S90 is excellent with an adjustable steering column. It has a light interior that feels luxurious, what I’d like to call functional luxury. The car comes in three trim levels:

I love how driving a sleek car makes you that much more distinguished in the process. Momentum, Inscription, and Excellence. The light alloy wheels are crafted with meticulous attention to detail exclusively for the S90. This sedan looks expensive

but with no trace of flamboyance. Built on a new platform, with new engines under the hood, you get comfortable padded seats and excellent head and legroom, plus plenty of space in the rear and trunk. There’s also a power sunroof, LED taillights and headlights and fully adjustable power seats. Volvo has created an elegant grille design for the S90 with multiple concave vertical bars spaced out nicely, creating a retro feel with a modern look.

Sleek and Safe I found the Volvo to be an enjoyable drive with plenty of power as well as a very simple to use entertainment system. Equipped with a host of new technologies, ranging from cutting edge safety to cloud based apps and services, the S90 is further proof

of the Swedish brands’ continuing transformation. The engine offers an impressive 320hp and Volvo will be bringing out a 407hp twin engine model soon, that is it will have a petrol and an electric engine under the hood. You use the electric when you want to drive around town, and the petrol one on the highways. Volvo has always been a favorite of people who look for quality and safety in a car. In line with their Vision 2020 mission, to have no deaths or serious injuries in a Volvo car by the year 2020, they have a built-in active safety override (which is a first for the luxury sedan segment) insuring your safety aboard the S90. On my way to work the next morning, another Volvo with diplomatic plates on, possibly the Swedish consul, made me pull up in front of him. I love how driving a sleek car makes you that much more distinguished in the process.

Not Just For Kicks Gulf Insider had the chance to try out the new Nissan Kicks and it was awesome.

T

he Nissan Kicks is out to replace the Juke and Tida Hatchback. It is a crossover SUV aimed at the younger market and has eye pleasing salon shape styling. The flat bottomed steering wheel is ergonomically designed to allow for comfort and easy access to controls. The zero gravity seat support (which I understand is based on research from NASA) is made to be comfortable on long and short journeys by supporting the back and spine. The seats are extra comfortable and reduce

driver fatigue. The exterior styling is sharp with angular sweptback headlamps and honeycomb grille with chrome surrounding in front whilst the side panels have prominent character lines and body cladding around muscular wheel arches. The Nissan Kicks has won all sorts of Best in Class Awards including for its spacious leg and head room (it features a five seat lay-out), ease of parking, luggage space, and fuel economy. It has a 1.6 liter engine which

generates 118 HP. Its six-speed autogear box gives a gear-shift simulation which makes it more satisfying to drive than earlier model CVT systems. The CVT, in case you don’t know, is a continuously variable transmission - an automatic transmission that can change seamlessly through a continuous range of effective gear ratios. It also has an active ride control which means it smoothly takes bumps in the road in its stride. This car also has all the very latest safety technology installed. Other features include a 7-inch

touchscreen infotainment system with smart phone connectivity and climate control. On higher grade models, the infotainment system comes with a full color screen with audio, satellite navigation, and full smartphone integration as well as access to Facebook, Google Search, and Twitter. The crossover SUV market is becoming more popular, and Nissan is out to make its mark planning to sell this car in over 80 countries around the world. The car was showcased across Brazil during the summer of 2016 to promote the 2016 Olympic Games, of which Nissan was a lead sponsor. There are three grades of this car, the lowest going for US$15,300 and the highest in the range going for US$18,600.

Nissan Patrol Super Safari ...and Desert Camel Power

N

issan launched the new Patrol Super Safari, an SUV designed for those who like serious offroading and Gulf Insider had the chance to try it out. It’s a fun, solid car to drive. The only complaint we had was that we wish we could take it to more rugged terrain because it would have been more satisfying to drive it through a tougher course. The Super Safari comes with “Super Safari” body decals, dual-tone colors, flared fenders, a rear spoiler and distinctive 17-inch black alloy wheels, whilst the interior is of tan leather with electrically adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, a refrigerated cool box, Bluetooth, USB, AUX, navigation system, and

reversing camera. It’s powered by a 4.8 liter DOHC inline six-cylinder engine, generating 451 NM of torque, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Nissan wants to bring in a new standard for offroad performance called Desert Camel Power (DCP) to indicate the ‘desert power’ of a vehicle in the same way that ‘horse power’ indicates a car’s road speed ability but is not really indicative of what it can do on sand. DCP is a scientifically proven formula to determine how a given vehicle will perform in the desert with live camels and a Nissan Super Safari showing off the methodology used.

DCP will soon be used in all Nissan Middle East Showrooms and marketing literature to define the desert capabilities of Nissan’s SUV line-up, of which the iconic Patrol Super Safari is part.

Nissan Patrol Super Safari will soon be available in Bahrain.

Now you can watch the news in VR CNN has released a new virtual reality platform to deliver the news from around the world through live streams, while also producing weekly virtual reality experiences. The new offering will be available across multiple devices including your laptop, Samsung GearVR, Oculus Rift and Google Daydream headsets, as well as CNN’s iOS and Android apps. CNN now claim its app is the third largest mobile VR app worldwide, only behind Facebook and YouTube. While VR is certainly a growing trend in the telco and tech space, CNN is not the first broadcaster to enter the space. The Huffington Post, the Economist, and The New York Times have all created their own 360-degree video content in the past year.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Book Samsung has unveiled two new tablets - the Galaxy Tab S3, and a laptop-tablet hybrid called the Samsung Galaxy Book. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, which is available in both black and silver color options, pairs a new glass-backed, metal-edged high-end design with an impressive collection of specs. With a 9.7-inch, HDR-enhanced Super AMOLED display offering a bright, detailed 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution, the tablet, which is a mere 6.0mm thick and looks like the Galaxy S7 smartphone, is finished with a massive 6,000mAh battery that’s good for 10 hours of heavy use. Unlike the single form of the Galaxy Tab S3, the Samsung Galaxy Book comes in two sizes, with a 10.6-inch model lining up alongside a 12-inch device. Both come boxed with an attachable keyboard with integrated track pad, making it easier for users to complete work tasks on the move and essentially making the slates full laptop replacements.

WiFi Master Key App: 900 million + users WiFi Master Key, a free mobile app developed by Linksure to enable passwordless Internet access has grown to more than 900 million users to date. Not more than 10 apps have passed this milestone besides Youtube, Facebook, and WeChat. The phenomenal growth of WiFi Master Key is perhaps due to its capability to empower anyone to go online via free Internet access, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. According to statistics from International Telecommunication Union (ITU), only approximately 40%, and less than 15% of the population, respectively, have Internet access.
