Enrique Alvarado, AndrĂŠs M. Estrada, Alejandro Melgoza An independent fisherman from San Carlos, BCS, prepares the engine of his boat (or panga in Spanish) by injecting gasoline during a June morning. Its part of the everyday routine that begins for fishermen right after breakfast.
Fishermen wear the classic waterproof overall to undertake their daily work routine. At 7 o'clock in the morning, they unravel a net before the trip to Magdalena Bay, BCS.
Fishermen set sail in their small fishing boat, pieced together with scraps, on a cold and cloudy morning. They admire the landscape while the boat enters the fishing area of San Carlos, BCS. A panga floats in the middle of the Bay in San Carlos, with two fishermen placing sardine bait in the wooden traps, which they then submerge to catch crab. This kind of artisanal fishing is common in this lagoon complex.
The traps are immersed in the water along with a rope tied to a soda bottle that floats in the bay and helps identify the places where each one is placed.
The fish’s entrails are extracted at the beach by fishermen in Puerto Adolfo Lopez-Mateos, BCS. This activity gives an added value to the commercialized product, which translates into better profits for the fishermen of the community.
A Puerto Lopez-Mateos fisherman cuts the bottom of the fish with a knife to extract its entrails.
