We’re gearing up for an exciting season, as we celebrate 60 years with Southwest Florida Symphony; say farewell and welcome new leaders at Artis—Naples, Naples Art and Alliance for the Arts; and welcome new events like the Alliance’s Fringe Festival. For more proof of the creative scene’s energy, look to the local talent that’s making it on the national stage: Estero’s Ben Allen placed fifth on NBC’s “The Voice,” Casey Bishop ranked fourth on ABC’s “American Idol” and Cape Coral’s Tal Anderson landed a role on Netflix’s “Atypical.” Local stages are buzzing with a slate of thought-provoking shows, too, including the premiere of local Broadway veteran Jeffrey Binder’s story of faith and healing in his one-man show “Higher” at Gulfshore Playhouse (running Jan. 13-30), “When We Were Young and Afraid,” about a shelter for abused women, at The Naples Players (starting on March 30) and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit feel-good musical “In the Heights” at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre (starting on April 8). We’re also eager to see artists who rose to fame in the ’80s exhibiting in Fort Myers, like Darryl Pottorf at Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (SBDAC) downtown, and Jack Massing and William Wegman’s collaborative in-residence exhibition that runs through Dec. 4 at Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Florida SouthWestern State College. There are new creative spaces to explore, too, including the long-anticipated Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden at SBDAC, the United Arts Council’s new co-op in downtown Naples (the first step taken to provide more exhibition space for local artists, as laid out in The Collier County Arts & Culture Strategic Plan, drafted in early 2020) and musician Jan Edwards’ stylish studio-gallery MuseBox Arts in the Naples Art District. We encourage you to keep this guide on hand throughout the season, so you don’t miss any part of Southwest Florida’s artistic boom. —Jaynie Bartley, Associate Editor

F I NA L B OW Naples Philharmonic’s conductor Andrey Boreyko returns for his eighth and final season at Artis—Naples. The renowned music director (who also conducts Poland’s Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, which performs in Hayes Hall on April 3) helped establish traditions for the group, like collaborations with local performers, guest stars and film screenings accompanied by live scores. Don’t miss his last few performances this season, including a celebratory “Thank You, Andrey!” concert on April 9.
