About 25 years ago, he returned home to be closer to his aging parents. The subtropical setting was also a draw for him and his Thai wife, who missed the heat and had grown weary of living in the North Carolina mountains. “We decided to come back home and plant some trees,” he says. Owen taught in the local public school system for about a decade before landing a job teaching art at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). From the beginning, he set out to establish the school’s printmaking department, with a focus on nontoxic methods, including using water- and plant-based inks. He aims to empower the next generation with cleaner practices, devoid of harmful chemicals and fumes. “We have to consider sustainability not just from an environmental standpoint, but also our human resources and the sustainability of an artist’s health,” says Owen who witnessed mentors become ill with cancer and other conditions. In 2017, FGCU awarded Owen a semester-long sabbatical, allowing the artist time to teach himself solarplate printmaking, a safer process that utilizes UV light to create etchings and relief prints. When Hurricane Irma hit, Owen unexpectedly found himself depicting the aftermath of a colossal natural event. “Once I knew that my Though he’s been boating around the Ten

Printmaking is where all the crossroads meet, Owen explains. Every print begins with an image, whether it be drawn on stone for a lithograph or engraved for a woodcut print. With his postIrma images, he either burned the photos—which he first edited graphs as references to draw the images he would later print. The resulting artworks, which he calls “narrative landscapes,” depict windswept mangroves, once crowned with leaves, standing skeletal as they protrude from the shallows; white sands crisscrossed with driftwood; and expanses of empty sky. “There are areas where the foliage is coming back. Then, there are areas, like those in the images, where that is never going to grow back,” he says, reflecting on the lush islands, free of debris, that he saw as a kid when he’d go out with his dad. “That’s a big change from when I was a child.” Solarplate printing—with its highly contrasted, staticky quality—turned out to be a fitting medium for depicting the battered scene. Despite the still atmosphere, the branches look like lightning rods crackling with energy, resulting in images that are both pensive and slightly dystopian.

Owen recently shifted to woodcuts, one of the oldest forms of printmaking in which images are carved onto wooden blocks, then inked and pressed onto paper. He likes to enlist the earthier method to depict the aqueous elements around him. “I was curihe adds. He does just that with pieces like Solace (2022), in which he carved gently curving waves into a still expanse of water. Often, his woodcuts reveal the activist undertones in his work. Where his solarplates focus on the landscape, the woodcuts mostly depict dead fish—a reminder of red tide and its impact on local wildlife. “Woodcut has a history of sociopolitical commentary,” Owen says, noting that the prints have been widely used throughout history to make protest signs and political posters. “I felt the medium was appropriate for bringing environmental issues to light.” Whether the messages are overt or implied, all of his works Much of Owen’s recent work depicts the

beauty and majesty of the natural world. In another solarplate series created right after Irma, Owen focuses on the mile markers that guide vessels like Gator through the water. In these prints—his only works that include manmade elements amidst a natural environment—the viewer looks from an area of darkness out into an expanse of light, where the signs stand like unwavering sentinels. The cross-like symbolism hints at the potential for redemption, for finding our way as we work to preserve our wild spaces. “My work is motivated by the idea that the natural environment is a complex and meaningful balance of the sublime that is essential to our well-being, rather than a commodity to be parsed, exhausted and profited from,” he says. The markers, he notes, are helpful as we think about where we may go. “Being lost at sea is a terrible feeling, “My work has always aimed to capture the

When making an entrance, it’s possible to make a big splash without getting wet. Stepping off a yacht into a restaurant guarantees a few head turns. And while it may require a bit of planning to get the right mile markers and reserve a slip, it’s worth it for a meal you and your friends will talk about long after your last toast. Marco Island and its endless maze of canals beckon all kinds of boaters. While most folks know of casual crowd-pleasers, like Mango’s Dockside Bistro at the Esplanade marina, the relatively new Osteria Capri, just a bit north, on Naples’ southern edge, is an unexpected treat. Overlooking a vast stretch of azure with a mangrove-covered island in the distance, the restaurant has two slips and a beach where skiffs and small pontoons can drop anchor for lunch. Le Cordon Bleu Paris-trained, Sicilian chefowner AJ Black, who has run restaurants in Southwest Florida for decades, opened this Sorrento-inspired spot on Naples’ Isles of Capri in 2020. “I’ve had places all over—Amore in Naples, Il Tesoro on Sanibel—there’s nothing left of nature. This feels like what Naples used to look like, and I hope it stays that way,” says Black, who takes pride in using the finest ingredients, including fish brought in by boat daily. Dive into delicacies like the frutti di mare Neapolitan pizza and the seared sea bass finished with a medley of mushrooms, artichokes and sundried tomatoes, served over lemony risotto.

he couldn’t keep up with the demand for his sought-after handcrafted ties. “It’s not that I was doing anything differently,” Davis says. “It’s that I invited people to share it with me. Fly-fishing has been an exclusive club. From the very beginning, I sought to be inclusive.” It worked. Davis and Ross opened a small brick-and-mortar at the beginning of 2018. Two years later, they renovated and moved into a 2,600-square-foot shop off Bonita Beach Road. And when an opportunity to expand their business into another state presented itself, they jumped on it. Well, Ross jumped on it. Davis dragged his feet. “I fought James every step of the way, from starting an internet business to opening this new shop,” he says. “I had a panic attack the night before we opened our first shop. It hit me that I just financed a store that What started as a hobby tying flies for firefighter

when seemingly everyone decided to pick up the sport. “There are two events in modern history that resulted in an explosion in fly-fishing: When the movie A River Runs Through It came out and COVID.” Davis says. “Everyone wanted to learn how to fly-fish, and COVID was the perfect excuse to buy a rod and finally do it.” Davis discovered fly-fishing as a teenager. He grew up spin casting, like

hunting than fishing. That’s why people get addicted to the process,” Davis says. “In fly-fishing, you’ll push down a bank and see a 100-pound tarpon, then throw a Tic Tac at it and watch this explosion of action, like a National Geographic level of nature, right in front of you. You get to interact with wild ass animals at their nuttiest. It’s just cool. As soon as you do it, you want to do it again.” And, he says, these new fly-fishing addicts have a world of water to explore here. “You can hop in a guide’s boat and hunt for 100-pound tarpon, or stand on a beach and spend an afternoon sight fishing for snook right in the surf. And that’s just right here. Fly-fishing gives you a whole new reason to travel and interact with the world.” Not that Davis has much time to fish himself these days. The 37-year-old is the founder of The Fisherman’s Daughter, a small retail operation in which she takes her brother and father’s catch, along with that of local shrimpers, and turns it into prepared foods, such as smoked fish, homemade spreads and salads, to sell at area farmers markets and through Trico Shrimp Company on Fort Myers Beach. If you think her company’s name sounds like a novel’s title, you are not far off. The Fisherman’s Daughter is also her anthology of poems paying tribute to life on the water. She wrote it to fulfill her Master of Fine Arts degree requirements at Boston’s Emerson College. She might have settled in that literary city, but Massachusetts’ hardscrabble coast bears little resemblance to the gentle Gulf. “I missed this landscape,” she says. “I found everything I was writing, everything I was dreaming about, the language I was using, it was all tied to home.” Her husband, David Groves, who was raised in Naples, likewise longed to return south, and the couple settled in North Fort Myers. The Fisherman’s Daughter—the company, not the poetry—took shape over a fish smoker in the kitchen alongside her dad. Bobby, who is 72, grows quiet when his daughter talks about the future, but Chanda is pragmatic in her thinking. “My dad thinks he will

The world is dark and sleepy when Chanda Jamieson climbs onto her father’s commercial fishing skiff one Monday morning. But not for long. In the time it takes her father, Bobby, to pilot the boat from Cape Coral to downtown Fort Myers, emergent light illuminates the Caloosahatchee River, the city’s skyline and the bridges spanning the water. “This is the best part of the day out here, watching the sun come up,” says Bobby, who descends from a line of New England and Nova Scotia fishermen and has been fishing Southwest Florida’s waters since he was 10. Chanda and her brother, Robby, who is on the prow outfitted in chest-high waders, nod. Chanda gazes at the fast-moving headlights along the Edison Bridge, the workweek’s hustle beginning. On the water, the Jamiesons begin their labor, too, hoisting traps and collecting blue crabs, but their world remains unhurried and solitary— the three of them, their decadesold boat and the pelicans that trail them, scavenging for whatever bait Robby discards. This is the world of sunrises and silence, tides and currents, crab traps and fishing nets, into which Chanda was born. It set her on a course for a most unexpected career as a poet, protector of family and promoter of local fishermen and their heritage.

Chanda Jamieson started fishing with her dad, Bobby (below), as a child. Those early experiences drew her back to the Gulf after graduate school. “I missed this landscape,” she says.

fish until the day he dies, but there’s no retirement plan for commercial fishermen,” she says. She wanted to develop a new source of income for him; for her mom, Janet, a music lover who introduced Chanda to lyrics and verse; for her 33-yearold brother, working a dual career as paramedic and fisherman; and, of course, for herself, David and their precocious 4-year-old, Tilly. “I imagined there was a way to wrap it all together—the writing, the creating, the dreaming, along with cooking and creating things that celebrated home and family,” she says in a voice that seems to rise and fall rhythmically, like a wave. Or a poem. She spent several months perfecting family recipes and developing her own, got licensed and set up a table at a farmers market for the first time in 2019. Just because something feels right does not mean it’s easy. At farmers markets, Chanda keeps a dog-eared copy of Jack Gilbert: Collected Poems tucked behind her display coolers. She is shy by nature; when the crowds, her schedule (she’s up by 2 a.m. on market days to blend the dips) or the rigors of working and motherhood overwhelm her, she pauses to read a verse. “There’s a comfort it gives me,” she explains. Chanda was not much older than Tilly when Bobby started taking her out on the water. She remembers skirting through mangroves, G U L F S H O R E L I F E — 87

probably the healthiest fish you can eat,” Bobby says, picking up from his son. “It’s the only fish with a gizzard, so it filters everything it eats.” Consumers elsewhere in the United States still have a taste for these meaty fish, yet Floridians write it off as bait. That’s not the only reason for its decline, the Jamiesons say. Commercial fishing overall in Southwest Florida is a wisp of its former self, eroded by a gill net ban enacted in 1995, tainted water, loss of seagrass and an aging workforce. Young men like Robby are a rarity. Chanda intends to ease mullet back into the collective palate, first by smoking it—a near-universal appeal—and later by incorporating it into dishes she loved as a child. She promotes other regional fare, like pink shrimp, blue crab and kingfish, which have been overshadowed by Gulf shrimp, stone crab and grouper. “There were definitely moments where I wondered if this was going to work,” Chanda says. But word of her products spread among the farmers market crowds. “I had customers say, ‘I brought smoked mullet spread to a party, and I didn’t tell them what it was, and they loved it.’ It became almost a badge of honor for those customers who tried it for the first time to come back and feel they are supporting local fishermen in Southwest Florida.” It is unsurprising that a fisherman’s daughter grew up to become a storyteller, given the old legends of the sea. “It’s how I process so many things,” she says of her maritime upbringing. When her maternal grandmother lay

waiting for sunrise, watching her dad scan the water for potential catches, wishing she had the same power to see beneath the surface. She accompanied him to the fish houses, where Bobby let her play in tanks of wiggling shrimp. “It sounds crazy today,” she says, grinning, “but it’s one of my most vivid memories. I loved it.” When Robby came along, a more traditional heir, Chanda refused to relinquish her place to her little brother, their mom recalls. Bobby would take them out in turns. The trio—these tall, dark-haired fisherfolk—cherish their time together. “I don’t feel like this is work at all,” says Bobby, who fishes six days a week and, with his wife, minds Tilly on Sundays. Robby chimes in: “It’s the best possible outcome for my life that I can imagine.” Chanda established The Fisherman’s Daughter for the sake of her family, but not for her family alone. One morning, Robby and Bobby stop by the commercial kitchen in Fort Myers, where Chanda is preparing her foods, and the three explain the significance of her endeavor. “She’s brought mullet back,” Robby says. “Mullet used to be a prestigious thing, especially for the working class. Everybody’s family had 20 different recipes for mullet ... It just fell out of fashion. Now everything is grouper, snapper, grouper, snapper.” In Bobby’s youth, mullet, along with sand brim, kingfish and sheepshead, abounded in the ocean and customer demand. “Mullet is

Chanda delights in seeing her 4-year-old daughter, Tilly’s, inherent connection to the Gulf. “She has the same opportunities I had to not only develop a closeness with my dad, mom and brother but also to Southwest Florida and the natural world,” she says. “She has time and space to develop an inner world.”

Chanda hopes to open a storefront with a market and restaurant that emphasize ingredients and flavors unique to the region. With her writing, she’ll continue sharing vignettes of life on the water. “She’s finally showing fishermen in a great light. She’s giving us a chance to tell our story,” Robby says.

in hospice, her thoughts returned to a girlhood incident, watching her dad sort shrimp he netted. “They were already white, as if they had been steamed, and I would hear him whisper that they had been touched by the moon.” What does that mean, she asked. If shrimp or fish come too close to the water’s surface during a full moon’s light, their color and texture change, he told her. She thought about that story while witnessing her grandmother’s body morph before her eyes. She was touched by the moon. “It was something that haunted me, but it also allowed me to connect with her death, to understand it, to hold it in a language I knew.” Silence cultivated her creativity as much as stories did. “I had time and space as a child to develop my own thoughts and my imagination,” she says. Her brother agrees: “One of the best parts of fishing is the beautiful silence.” She puts her writing to work on social media, where she celebrates her family’s way of life. May 24: “Fishing demands a large measure of hope, patience and love, a whole lot of love, but it sure does give in kind.” March 3: “Buoys dotting the water at dawn. Fishermen following behind. Their haul revealing a surface, a world above, a world below.” Her words matter, her brother says. Commercial fishers get a bad rap, a presumption that they are exploiting the sea and draining its bounty. “That’s what I love about what she’s doing,” Robby says. “She’s giving us a voice. She’s finally showing fishermen in a

great light. She’s giving us a chance to tell our story.” Chanda has big dreams for The Fisherman’s Daughter. She’s laying plans for a small market and dining space that offers heirloom dishes celebrating the local catch—mullet and pink shrimp wrapped in collard greens, cornmeal-dusted softshell crabs, fresh-off-the-smoker fillets paired with homespun foods, like locally grown vegetables and country bread. She’ll ask Bobby to build hardwood tables, another talent of his, and dress them with bunches of dried native flowers. “A space that is at once familiar and unfamiliar, much like the local seafood we tend to focus on,” she says. She delights in Tilly’s unyielding energy and her inherited passion for the sea. “What I love most is she has the same opportunities I had to not only develop a closeness with my dad, mom and brother but also to Southwest Florida and the natural world,” she says. “She has time and space to develop an inner world.” And her writing? The business has breathed new life into her poetry. “It’s built my confidence and reminded me it’s OK to feel vulnerable,” Chanda says. In mid-April, literary journal Wood Cat Review posted one of her works. Fittingly, it conjures images of the horizon, sun and shore. “The horizon has gone missing, and the sun, now shoreless, glides as if upon water …” It is the language of Southwest Florida. Most people have to hop on a plane for an island getaway. In Southwest Florida, a network of barrier islands surrounds us, providing instant access to distinct experiences. Some are like private clubs with all the requisite remoteness and laidback luxury; others are built up and beckon those who want to get away from it all—while still having access to a great meal, art and shopping. Here, two writers report on the unique charms of our islands.

Gimme Shelter Naples’ GWT Outdoors transforms Kathryn and Rodney Woods’ Port Royal backyard with a tech-enabled pergola that maximizes outdoor living.

Come rain or shine, Kathryn and Rodney Woods’ outdoor living area is now fully outfitted for whatever the day brings. The Naples couple already had a stunning backyard, complete with a waterfront pool (wrapped in tile from top glass mosaic producer Bisazza) and an expansive lanai. When they decided to add a tech-enhanced Renson Camargue pergola from GWT Outdoors to their adjacent patio, they got one step closer to harnessing the elements. The sleek, powder-coated aluminum structure features automatic louvers and solar shades that adjust to make weather fluctuations almost nonexistent. Taking advantage of current technologies by updating outdoor living areas is a great way to bring your backyard into the 21st century. Plus, in our warm climes, it helps to have a space that shields you from harsher weather while beckoning with stylish, comfy lounge areas. This was

Adding a Renson pergola maximized the Woods’ outdoor living space, with an alfresco kitchen and dining room. “It’s also a garden room,” Kathryn says. The automatic louvers and shades protect her orchids.

something the Woods were missing in their Port Royal home. “All we had before was a gas grill,” Kathryn says. “Nobody ever went out there.” The Renson pergola, which meets Miami’s stringent wind-load requirements, has louvers that can rotate 150 degrees and be shut through a phone, remote or smart home system. “When you close it, it’s watertight,” Stuart Sheppard, the owner of Naples-based GWT Outdoors, says. The louvers are designed so that when you open them after it rains, water is redirected into the built-in gutters and you don’t get splashed. On the sides, automatic solar shades open and close to adjust the airflow and sunshine throughout the space. Sitting right off the kitchen and the lanai, the 17-by-14-foot pergola serves as the home’s primary outdoor dining area, extending above a custom table with handpainted Gervasoni ceramic bases and eight JANUS et Cie chairs. Box planters were moved from the main lanai area to surround the new outdoor dining space, seamlessly integrating greenery into the design and serving as a protective perimeter, so guests don’t accidentally step off the ledge. Another 6-by-4foot Renson structure juts off the side, housing a German-made Cook-N-Dine teppanyaki grill, which itself is an aesthetic and engineering marvel: When it’s shut off, it appears as a sleek sheet of stainless steel; when it gets hot, the center depresses, creating a wok-like area for cooking. Two Philippe Starck-designed Kartell Bubble Club chairs fill out the pergola, which overlooks the backyard, dock, pool and water. It all connects beautifully to the pool deck that stretches across the backyard with a wood pergola that offers partial shade when the couple is sunning on their Sutherland loungers and sets the stage when the sun shelf is covered by Plexiglas for parties. chairs and dated garden benches. To fill the void, he launched Sutherland in the mid-nineties with a mission to bring the indoors out. Joined by John Hutton—who at the time was the design director of the legacy brand Donghia—David developed a line of comfortable outdoor furniture that was durable and stylish enough to pass down through generations. Whereas patio furniture had relied on cast iron, wicker and plastic, David went with hardy teak, marine-grade steel, and more recently, lightweight carbon fiber—and added a designer touch. Hutton’s French-inspired Louis Soleil collection, first released in 2005, is considered to be one of the first fully upholstered outdoor furniture lines. Over the years, the brand has also partnered with giants like starchitect Philippe Starck and Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen. That’s how you get pieces like Sutherland’s Gulassa C Table, a solid block of Carrara marble carved into a brawny side table. Or, the Continuous Line lounge chair, with teak shaped into a modernist, wavy form. Innovation has always been at the heart of the brand. A few years into their furniture venture, Sutherland and Hutton grew disappointed by the lack of fabrics available to match the level of luxury furnishings they were creating. That was until Ann Sutherland (née Moore—a few years after they met, David and Ann wed), stepped into the Dallas showroom while working on an interior design project. Ann went on to spearhead a yearslong search for a performance material that could stand the test of time while being soft to the touch and available in sophisticated colors. She found the answer in a 100% solution-dyed acrylic fiber that Perennials now produces in its own mills in a variety of colors, patterns and textures. The Perennials fabric line launched in 1997, providing designers with custom, handcrafted textiles made in their Mexico, and later, India facilities. The acrylic can be woven into yarns for velvet, linen and jacquard-style fabrics that are tough enough to clean with bleach. These can be as soft as silk or as sturdy as Sutherlands’ love for yachting and the sea with 316 stainless steel and teak-topped tables that can be customized with umbrella fittings.

the rope that makes up the woven arms and backrests in Van Duysen’s chairs and sectionals for Sutherland, inspired by Bauhaus textile legend Otti Berger. Color is injected when the fibers are still in their liquid state, so the vibrancy does not fade. It’s a long way from the stiff, black fabrics used for awnings and boats available when Sutherland got its start. Now, after 25 years, both brands have built a reputation for furnishings and fabrics with first-class craftsmanship. They’re marking the milestone with the opening of a to-the-trade show-

High Tea The couple behind Good Fellow Botanicals brews a refined version of the mood-stimulating kratom tea and delivers it straight to your door.

When the first kratom tea bars started popping up in the region about five years ago, Fort Myers couple Bryce Ivie and Claudya Aleman were working toward a healthier lifestyle and moving away from drinking alcohol. “A lot of people have been getting on the kratom train as a coffee and alcohol alternative,” Ivie says. Kratom, a Southeast Asian plant in the coffee family, is used for its leaves, which are often crushed into a powder and brewed like tea. More than 50 different strains offer effects that are believed to be as powerful as strong sedatives, painkillers and mood-boosters. “It’s like a tea leaf—the longer it matures on the tree, its properties change,” Ivie says. “White kratom is a great morning coffee alternative, since it provides energy and focus; green is more middle-of-the-road and helps with anxiety; red is good at night since it relaxes the body and helps you sleep and stay asleep.” The main criticism, however, is the flavor. Some say it tastes grassy and bitter, like overly steeped green tea. To mask these notes, the powder is often poured into tea, juice or non-alcoholic cocktails. Ivie and Aleman were sampling different versions but couldn’t come to terms with the taste, so during the pandemic, they started experimenting with their own batches at home. The 31-year-old Ivie had ample experience with creating

For the couple, kratom provided a gateway toward a healthier and sober lifestyle. Now, with Good Fellow, they hope to inspire and interest others in the community who are curious about following a similar path. The goal is for kratom to be seen as an elevated beverage served at upscale restaurants in the region and consumed by a broad spectrum of people, including those who wouldn’t necessarily walk into a kratom bar. “We want Good Fellow to be radical in a sense—we don’t want to be a machine that pumps out a product,” Ivie says. “We hope that other people catch onto the culture and lifestyle that we’re creating through Good Fellow over time. We’re in it for the long game.”

The couple brews the teas fresh weekly and deliver to your door, milkman-style, in 32-ounce jugs.
