Effortlessly Chic

We may not be brimming with luxe ateliers or be considered a runway capital, but our region overflows with style. We’ve seen plenty of proof of that lately, during the height of season—from the floral designers and event planners that decked out stately homes and venues for the Naples Winter Wine Festival’s private Vintner Dinners to the parade of laid-back sophistication that regularly saunters down Fifth Avenue South.

Locally, we know style goes beyond aesthetics. It’s not about the fashions you wear, the labels you know, the crowds you roam in—it’s about how you carry yourself through the world.

We see that in this issue with interior designer Jeffrey Fisher and his husband, artist Juan Carlos Collada—a Naples power couple (“By Design,” p. 136) that produces some of the most fabu-

lous, art-filled interiors in town. In their 1970s bungalow, Noguchi furnishings live easily among collected novelties from far-flung travels and Juan Carlos’ paintings, assemblages and sculptures.

Earlier in the book, we take a fanciful tour through Naples Botanical Garden (“Bloom” p. 122), providing fashion inspiration for the upcoming Hats in the Garden. For all the gorgeous gowns that populate the pages, the style icon here is the Garden itself. Every blooming bud, towering palm and wild grass stands with substance and grace in our region’s ecological grand dame.

Still, no single moment better captures our region’s sophistication than Hats in the Garden— and few do the event’s fashion better than longtime Naples denizen Heather Dockweiler. Since the Garden started awarding attendees who wear the most spectacular hats to the event, Heather’s taken top honors. Our Community Advisory Board member Jennifer McCurry, who judged the competition last year, tells us what goes into crowning the winners in her letter on p. 46. Then, we go behind the scenes

with Heather to learn the inspirations behind the wondrous toppers she’s donned over the past decade (“Tip of the Hat,” p. 108). While each hat has its story, all pay tribute to the Garden and serve to lure locals further into the cause.

And that’s because the best style is that way: laden with intention, artistry and that je ne sais quoi that Southwest Floridians wear so well.

Hats Off to You

Every year, more than 600 attendees gear up for one of the year’s most anticipated fundraisers, Naples Botanical Garden’s Hats in the Garden. Proceeds support conserving endangered plants, renewing ecosystems and maintaining horticulture education. There’s also an additional annual fund-a-need drive. The luncheon takes place on the magnificent 170-acre grounds, with incredible runway shows from famous designers like Carolina Herrera and Naeem Khan. I’m thrilled for the Oscar de la Renta show this year.

Often, attendees plan their floral ensembles six months in advance. Impeccably dressed—as if attending the Kentucky Derby but with a tropical twist—guests sport their most creative frocks and hats. They spare no expense

and commission milliners from around the world to design hats and fascinators that mimic the Garden’s lush landscapes, exotic birds and flowers—definitely a sight to see!

In 2022, I was asked to join a panel of local judges to determine who wore it best. After attending the sold-out luncheon for well over a decade, it was an honor to study such a distinguished and creative group. Categories included Most Chic, Most Creative and Best Ensemble. We sat at a long table close to the entrance, and every attendee passed by to show us their innovative ensembles. With so much time and energy spent on their headpieces, they were eager to showcase their over-the-top and colorful masterpieces. We saw wide-brim hats with floral motifs, sky-high and amorphous fascinators, and even a Venus flytrap attempting to capture a butterfly (learn more about this wonder and the chic wearer’s penchant for creativity on p. 108).

Once the guests started making their way into the large tent to be seated, our small group of judges

deliberated over the categories. It was difficult to narrow down the selection, but one thing was evident: it’s not just about the style. Our clear winners didn’t just nail the look from head to toe; they spoke eloquently and gracefully about the Garden’s mission and what it means to them. They were there for what Hats in the Garden accomplishes in our community: advocating sustainability, education and conservation of our beloved Florida habitat.

Fort Myers-based Lia Martino draws from her modeling career for fashion-inspired art.

Fort Myers artist Lia Martino seamlessly skates from career-high to career-high. She’s balanced walking runways alongside Naomi Campbell and posing for Calvin Klein while taking painting classes in Europe and placing her artwork in Chico’s corporate offices and stores. And, the 55-year-old multihyphenate is not slowing down anytime soon. She keeps the pace, posing for commercial shoots locally and worldwide—but only when she’s not in her studio cranking out her energetic paintings and drawings that recall the glam, angular sketches made by fashion designers.

Though she depicts various subjects— from punchy abstracts inspired by 20th-century American painter Robert

Motherwell to close-ups of enigmatic faces framed by dripping paint—her most popular works pull from one of fashion’s greatest staples: the black dress. “Every woman needs a good black dress,” she says, echoing the time-tested adage. Whether painted in acrylic, drawn in charcoal, or mixed with wax and ink, most of her dress works feature smudged lines, frantic edges and the trademark splashes of black found through her repertoire. “Sometimes, it’s just the outline of a dress I sketch in 20 minutes, and women are drawn to it. When men see the same piece, they see Batman,” she adds, with a shrug.

Growing up in rural Iowa, Lia was drawn to art when a serendipitous

moment at 16 shifted her creative energy to fashion. She was recruited to walk a Chanel fashion show at Saks Fifth Avenue in Denver after the luxury retailer’s team saw her track and field photos in a Colorado Springs newspaper, where her family lived at the time. At 19, she moved to California and signed with LA Model Management. The timing was right—the agency was expanding, and the ’90s supermodel era was just around the corner.

Lia’s dedication to her modeling career—which included working with major fashion houses, such as Armani and Escada—paid off in bigger ways than she’d expected. Her rigorous travel schedule exposed her to art in some of the

world’s cultural capitals. In between gigs, she’d visit as many museums as she could. In New York City, she immersed herself in museums that ran the gamut of art history and often skipped town to Washington D.C.’s National Portrait Gallery or the Library of Congress. (“I have a book fetish, too,” she confesses.) She kept up the pastime as she began spending more time in Europe. “Even if I was living in Milan or Germany, I’d take off weekends from casting jobs and travel,” she says.

In between exploring churches in Barcelona and wandering Paris’ mazelike Louvre, Rome pulled her in like a magnet. “Rome was one of my favorite places for everything—museums, food, music, culture,” she says. “I felt most at home there.” She wistfully recalls an exhibition of Salvador Dalí and Picasso in the Eternal City’s Galleria d’Arte Moderna. She was shocked to walk into galleries full of female nudes. “I was a naive little farm girl,” she says. “It was life-changing for me. It empowered me. It was arrestingly beautiful. It told me that there are no rules to what can be painted; that there are no rules in art.”

She began using her weekends in Rome to take art classes, too, where she was introduced to Old World techniques,

including grinding raw pigments to make her own paint. “That’s where I learned most of my art,” Lia says. “I didn’t speak Italian, so I was seriously hands-on trying to figure out methods from the artists I was working under. I got so excited about painting. I’d think, ‘I don’t need to do that Armani campaign; I’m just gonna stay in Rome instead.’”

Lia set up makeshift studios wherever she lived, squeezing in time to

create after fashion shows. “I’d buy rolls of canvas, and I’d stuff them in my suitcase,” she says. “And I always had pigment and paints with me. If I didn’t have materials to work on, I’d paint on the backs of curtains.” The logistics could have been daunting—especially since Lia’s always worked on a large scale, with her preferred size clocking in around 8-by-10 feet. She would request to

paint to the raw pigments she ground back in Rome, are often done in moody black-and-white palettes punctuated by pops of scarlet. She coaxes the dramatic shapes and visceral brushstrokes that she favors into the silhouettes and pleats of black dresses that read all at once edgy and buoyant.

Dresses follow her throughout her career, starting with the simple, black Chanel she modeled at Saks as a teenager, long before she took commissions. “Good art triggers a memory,” she says. She pauses, reflecting on her time dashing from catwalks to canvases: “Especially, happy memories.”

Setting the Bar

Live music, lively conversation, livelier libations—often, a restaurant’s best seat is at the bar.

After nine years as a food writer, here are a few truths I’ve learned: An exceptional bread basket bodes well for the rest of your meal. Entrees are usually the least interesting part of the menu. It’s perfectly OK to be the only person who orders dessert. And the bar is often the best seat in the house.

There’s more style and action at the bar. Designers treat the space as a focal point of restaurant design, imbuing it with style. Bartenders treat their stations as something of a stage, demonstrating the twofold mastery of their craft: Generously poured cocktails and attentive conversation. For groups, dining at the bar encourages sharing, while solo diners find ordering a dry-aged Prime rib-eye and an ice-cold dirty martini utterly indulgent. In Southwest Florida, where your chances of securing a last-minute reservation at a popular restaurant in season are about on par with hitting the Powerball, there’s no singular elation more powerful than skipping the wait and sidling up to the bar. Those who orchestrate such carefully cultivated experiences know this well.

“If it’s just me and my wife, I’ll go to the bar,” Aldo Novoa, executive chef at The Ritz-Carlton Resorts of Naples, says. “I like the corner seats. You see the whole restaurant. You get to engage with the mixologist, and when someone’s passionate about what

they do, you see it.” In 2020, Aldo oversaw the development of the poolside bar Ría at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, Tiburón. “Ría translates to river,” he says, explaining that the Latin street food-inspired menu is a nod to the hotel’s lazy river. “In ancient times, street food markets were next to rivers because that’s where people would travel.” For his menu, humble fare, like a trio of mini Argentinian choripán with confit pepper escabeche and regional Mexican tacos are presented with fivestar panache on custom wood boards and painted stands. The authentic flavors carry to the craft cocktails, with libations like sweet, spiced rum horchata.

Designing a centerpiece bar was also top of mind for restaurateur Skip Quillen when he embarked on the million-dollar renovation of Chops City Grill in Bonita Springs two years ago. “We wanted to make it very sexy but with an old-school, retro

To achieve that effect, the long, polished maple bar is decked out with seven shimmering chandeliers, and the menu features modernized steakhouse classics, like oysters with cucumber-vodka mignonette and a spectacularly marbled Snake River Valley Gold Wagyu tri-tip, discounted 20-plus percent from the regular menu. As part of the revamp, corporate bar manager Kendra Rizzi also refreshed the cocktail program, creating a leather-bound tome of more than 50 cocktails, presented in crystal glassware with custom ice and special garnishes, like whole-charred long hot peppers.

“It’s really about the mixologists,” Valeria Zanella, partner and marketing director of Gather in Cape Coral, says of sitting at the bar. “It’s that one-to-one feeling and the opportunity to turn to your bartender and say, ‘I like this and that; can you make something?’” The cocktail program is also a major draw at The Oyster

Society on Marco Island, where a line often forms before the doors open at 4:30 p.m. “People come to see the bartenders,” co-owner Francesco Caravelli says. “They’re very knowledgeable about the history of cocktails.” He means that literally—while a section of the menu is dedicated to Prohibition-style cocktails, the bar team also looks forward as they chat about the latest trends, such as the Midori sour’s ongoing revival. The Oyster Society shakes it up with a Japanese spin by showcasing yuzu and green tea-infused shochu.

That’s not to suggest patrons only show up to imbibe at these bars. The Oyster Society’s seafood towers and more than 25 varieties of bivalves make for a well-fed bar crowd. At Gather, the mains, including housemade pastas and Wagyu filet, are just as popular as the upmarket bar snacks, like the warm pretzel with truffle honey mustard. “We have people who prefer to sit and have a full dinner at the bar,” Valeria says.

Not everyone follows a familiar format. Liberty in Fort Myers places the culinary team, not bartenders, on display. Ten counter seats overlook the restaurant’s kitchen, where chef Bob Boye tinkers with a treasure trove of seasonal and luxe, imported ingredients. (You’ll need a reservation if you hope to snag one of these coveted spots.) From their perch, patrons observe as eclectic tasting menus come together, from the very first crispy layered potato with black truffle and egg yolk to the final and impressively gooey medium-rare chocolate chip cookie.

Nearby, LYNQ has more space to mingle. Anchored by a splashy, backlit resin bar, the indoor lounge area flows to the patio. With room to spread out, the bar draws a robust happy hour crowd, who tuck into sushi rolls and spicy ahi tuna nachos and pluck their choice of fruity Patron margaritas that dangle in small bottles from the ‘margarita tree.’

After its million-dollar renovation two years ago, Chops City Grill, in Bonita Springs, has one of the ritziest bars in town—perfect for tucking into their Prime steaks and creative craft cocktails.

Perhaps as much a fixture—and draw— as the food and drink at these local venues is the live music. In the heart of downtown Fort Myers, The Veranda oozes Old World charm, with a grand piano and its wood-paneled bar. Tuxedo-clad bartenders pour rye Old Fashioneds or uncork bottles of Caymus for regulars, who delight in veal piccata and rack of lamb finished with rosemary merlot wine sauce. Other than the occasional spontaneous chorus of “Piano Man,” it’s thoroughly civilized. “One of the things we take pride in is we don’t have TVs,” assistant manager JD Clutch says. “There are no sports playing. We want people to have conversations.” In Naples, the long, horseshoe-shaped bar at Vergina hosts live music every evening at 8:30 p.m., from flamenco to classical guitar.

The Tavern at The Bay House in Naples is certainly one of the area’s most atmospheric. A neon-lit raw bar and leatherback chairs are visual preambles to sweeping views of the Cocohatchee River. Here, live bands perform nightly during season as platters of stone crab whisk through the room. When owner Grant Phelan acquired the Naples institution in 2021, he followed the previous owner’s inspiration. After all, he was already well acquainted with the allure of dining at the bar. “It’s one of my favorite things to do,” he says. “When I go to other cities, my wife and I always dine at the bar. I can talk to the bartender and the regulars. I can find out what’s going on in that restaurant and in that community.”

But it isn’t necessarily that these locales are simply in vogue, marching to the beat of cultural shifts and developing palates. In more ways than one, they’re responsible for setting these stylistic tones and epitomizing what it means to raise the bar.

Next time you’re out, aim for a stool over a booth. You may learn a few new truths of your own.

Desert Dreaming

Fort Myers’ new Flock Wine Bistro reimagines the Italian aperitivo with unexpected wines. One of the owners’ favorites: Bernard Magrez’s Moroccan Domaine Excelcio.

At the new Flock Wine Bistro in Fort Myers, husband-wife team Matteo Affatati and Alyson Casey have a small wine list that touches on familiar and unexpected Old and New World producers. They pour anywhere from 30 to 40 labels at a time, and the classics are kept to a minimum. Sure, you’ll recognize grapes and regions, like sauvignon blanc from New Zealand and cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley. But a good portion of the wines are alternatives to what guests may typically drink. There’s an Etna Bianco that can sub for a pinot grigio and—the owners’ current favorite— Domaine Excelcio, a blend of syrah and grenache from Morocco that could rival your favorite Rhône red. “We want people to challenge conventions when it comes to wine here in Southwest Florida,” Alyson

says. “I thought Excelcio would be the hardest for us to sell because most people are unfamiliar with Moroccan wine, but now it’s our best-selling wine.” Oenophiles are intrigued by the wine’s expressive nose alongside its soft and lively full body.

Morocco is one of those tough-to-classify wine countries. While viticulture is believed to date back to Phoenician times, large-scale winegrowing and production were halted in the seventh century with the introduction of Islam and the religion’s bans on alcohol—it didn’t make a comeback until French colonization in the 20th century. The industry has had a few ups and downs in the time since; by the 1950s, Morocco was one of the largest exporters in the world. But vineyards lost their stride when the country gained independence in 1956; French expertise

left Morocco, followed by restricting quotas from Europe. Production has been back on the rise since the 1990s, but despite being the second-largest exporter in Africa (after South Africa) and producing more than 40 million bottles per year, only 10 to 15 percent is exported.

“They’ve been making wine for centuries—it’s definitely Old World in my mind,” says Alyson, who admits that when she first sampled Bernard Magrez’s 2018 Domaine Excelcio (60 percent syrah, 40 percent grenache), she didn’t know much about Moroccan wine. She didn’t love it at first, but Matteo was instantly a fan, and the wine started growing on her. When Alyson tried it with Italian charcuterie and aged cheese, the peppery notes of syrah complementing the meat, she became a convert.

At their new wine bar, Flock’s owners, husband-wife duo Matteo Affatati and Alyson Casey, draw on the allure of Rome’s hipster Monti neighborhood. The area is known in part for its family-owned trattorie and wine bars.

Matteo and Alyson love to pour lesser-known wines, like Bernard Magrez’s 2018 Excelcio. Bernard purchased the Moroccan vineyard, in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, in 2005. “My goal is to let wine lovers discover a sometimes hidden treasure,” he says.

The hearty, robust red (“It’s almost meaty,” Alyson adds) has a bit of spice yet is still rounded and elegant and pairs beautifully with Flock’s European-inspired charcuterie and cheese boards. It also cuts through the fat of toppings like porchetta and melted mozzarella on Flock’s “pinsa” Romana—pizza-like flatbreads. Syrah and grenache is a common blend in the southern Rhône (usually alongside mourvèdre) and dominates the famed Châteauneuf-duPape appellation, but Alyson says Excelcio is entirely different in terms of profile. “It’s very earthy—you taste the soil in it,” she explains. “It’s almost like you’re being transported to the sands of Morocco.”

French wine magnate Bernard Magrez—who owns more than 30 wine estates everywhere from Uruguay to four Bordeaux Grand Crus—purchased the Moroccan vineyard, located south of the imperial city of Meknes in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, in 2005. He acts as the winemaking consultant, deciding on the style with local growers and winemakers. “My goal is to let wine lovers discover a sometimes hidden treasure,” Bernard explains. “Morocco is home to one of the most precious and historical terroirs to produce a well-balanced cuvée, using traditional French and Spanish grapes in the warm climate.”

He’s always had an eye toward the undiscovered, being an early adopter of emerging regions, like Portugal, Uruguay and Morocco. More recently, he’s looking eastward to China, where he’s working

with the Ningxia region’s Legacy Peak winery to produce a cabernet and a cabernet-merlot blend, which they’ll export internationally as China continues growing its market.

In Bernard’s Moroccan vineyard, production is on the smaller side—only 3,000 bottles of the 2018 Excelcio vintage remain. And, that’s what Alyson and Matteo appreciate. They like to introduce guests to lesser-known wines, such as Excelcio, through themed tastings and events.

The couple—who met in Rome in 2012, when Italian native Matteo owned a cafe by the Colosseum and Alyson was working as an English professor—aim to bring the Italian aperitivo culture to Southwest Florida. After selling their Roman restaurant, the duo moved to Fort Myers to be closer to Alyson’s family.

The project—modeled after the bars found in Rome’s hipster Monti neighborhood—was in the making for five years as the duo established themselves locally by working in a handful of restaurants. The bar’s name was born during the pandemic, when they were unemployed, drinking a lot of wine and eating charcuterie. “We wanted a name that connotated coming together,” Alyson says, adding that the swallow logo was inspired by a ceramic she saw during a trip to Portugal in 2015. “The swallow leaves its nest and has adventures but always comes home.”

Tip of the Hat

Heather Dockweiler takes us into her wondrous world of Hats in the Garden fashion.

Heather Dockweiler has been involved with Naples Botanical Garden’s top fundraiser, Hats in the Garden, even before there was a formal garden. She joined the event committee with her mother, Simone Lutgert, in 2005. Two years later, Heather juggled planning her wedding with chairing the event. “Our venue was a construction site with a lot of dirt,” she recalls. Hats has certainly grown since, becoming one of the largest and most fruitful events of the season, with millions raised for the Garden’s mission of environmental education and preservation. The event is also Heather’s favorite of the season, and she’s developed traditions to amplify the day. Since 2007, she and a group of friends have descended on Third Street South, stopping traffic to take a photo in the middle of the street, then hopping between Campiello and Sea Salt for snacks and cocktails in full Hats garb. “[It’s] a bit of a spectacle, but I saw it as a marketing opportunity for the Garden,” she says.

In 2013, for the event’s 10th anniversary, a friend encouraged her to take a chance with a bold design. Heather has continued to go all out since, prompting eventgoers to wonder what she’ll wear next. While Heather keeps plans for future styles closely guarded, she shares an intimate look into her decade of fabulous toppers here. Each has a personal inspiration—a cherished memory, a playful nudge from her daughter, a dress she adores—but all point back to the cause. “The Garden is truly a gift to our community,” she says.

BLACK SWAN

In 2013, Viv Romeo, who was a stylist at Marissa Collections, encouraged Heather to do it up for Hats’ 10th anniversary. “In celebration of the transformation of the Garden and how much it had grown, I was ready to find a hat that was also transformational,” Heather says. When she first saw the Arturo Rios-designed piece at Marissa, she was floored. Arturo created the hat, inspired by Lady Gaga, with black goose feathers and 15-inch-tall wings (the fashion icon later wore the design in her “G.U.Y.” music video). The piece inspired Heather to step into the spotlight in honor of the Garden. “I’m more of a behind-thescenes person,” she explains. After her 2013 look, she was hooked on theatrical toppers.

TEACUP

There’s one special hat you surely recall but won’t see reflected in these pages: the Top Hat fashioned from hair by Louis Boutier of Naples-based 50Fifty Creative Services. Heather wore the ephemeral style in 2017.

The piece was partly inspired by this mossy Teacup topper depicted that Heather had worn to Viv’s bridal shower. Her daughter, Celie, remembered the fascinator, and when the two were watching artistic hair stylists’ videos on YouTube, Celie had an idea. “She turned to me and said, ‘You know what would be cool, mommy?

If you made a hat out of your hair!’ This got my wheels turning,” Heather says.

For the 2017 topper, Louis wove most of the Top Hat using hair extensions, then pinned the look onto Heather’s head, weaving in her own hair to make the whole piece appear as one.

CHERRY

Despite the originality of her Hats style, Heather isn’t one to plan too far in advance (the 2022 outfit came together the day before the event). This Pearls & Swine fascinator was intended for the 2015 Confection Collection-themed Hats in the Garden. The piece would be the ‘cherry on top’ of a REDValentino cherry-printed dress she found at Saks Fifth Avenue, but the frock was only available for pre-order. Still, Heather was enamored by the look and ordered it for the 2016 festivities. “This is probably the only year that I have been that prepared,” she says with a laugh.

CHERRY

BLOSSOM

Her hubby, Jamie, has been by Heather’s side at the event since she chaired it in 2007, making her 2014 Cherry Blossom fascinator extra special. “The sights and sounds of the Garden trigger detailed memories for me,” she says. The event’s theme that year, Couture et Fleurs, reminded Heather of a trip she and Jamie took to see the Japanese cherry blossom trees that only bloom a few weeks out of the year. When the Garden challenged designers to create looks from 80 percent organic, botanical material, Heather knew she wanted to channel the famed pink flowers with an Arturo Rios handmade design. “It was love at first sight,” she says.

BURGUNDY FEATHER BOMB

“I love the pageantry and the pomp and circumstance of wearing a hat or a fascinator,” Heather says. This coque feathers fascinator from Hats by Cressida delivers on the drama. Heather was ready to go with her Burgundy Feather Bomb when the Garden’s event was canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic. Not one to let a good design go unworn, Heather donned the headpiece at the Community School of Naples’ World Class Polo fundraiser in December. “The movement of the feathers—how they blew in the wind and reflected the sunlight—made it so whimsical,” she says.

SWINGING LADY SCENE

In 2018, Heather commissioned local artist Silvina Marzari, who trained at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, to create a piece inspired by the outfit Heather selected for the event—a Weekend Max Mara toile-printed look from the brand’s Royal Ascot-inspired Trophy Day collection. The women met when Silvina designed costumes for Celie’s productions at Naples Performing Arts Center. Silvina spent more than 30 hours hand-sculpting the miniature figures with cold porcelain, sewing their clothes, and constructing the base from Styrofoam and wire. “This was an invitation to create with no boundaries,” the artist says.

Heather’s 2022 fascinator—made of Dupioni silk and handpainted by Tel Aviv-based Maor Zabar Hats—has been among her most buzzworthy. It’s also her most personal.

The piece shows a Venus flytrap attempting to catch a butterfly. “I have had a deep affinity for butterflies as far back as I can remember. Over the past 20 years, they have become even more significant,” she says, adding that her family hosts butterfly releases at funerals and weddings to celebrate loved ones lost. “When I see one flutter by, I take it as a sign from a loved one and spend a moment reflecting on their life and my connection to them.”

Having recently lost her stepbrother, Kurt Lutgert, to cancer, Heather wanted to keep him close to her heart: “The Venus flytrap represents persistence; the butterfly represents change, comfort, hope and positivity.”

BUILT THEIR HOME, CAREERS AND LIVES AROUND

SHARED CREATIVE LANGUAGE.

Interior designer Jeffrey Fisher and his husband, artist Juan Carlos Collada, cut a striking pair. Jeffrey is boyish and buoyant with strands of gray hair; Juan Carlos has dark, expressive eyes and a chiseled jawline. The two are in the midst of renovating their two-bed, two-bath 1970s home. With 1,200 square feet to work with and two lifetimes of art and collected objects, there are many decisions to make. But, since art and design are their shared language, the renovation is more of a collaborative creative project between the two. “It’s the early days,” Jeffrey says, noting the couple aims to finish their Naples bungalow by late summer. “We’re playing in the design sandbox very well together. Check back in September and see if we built a castle, or if someone stomped off with their pail and shovel.”

On any given day, Jeffrey can be found running his Naples-based interior design firm, Jeffrey Fisher Home, where he tailors luxe finishes to the needs of his well-heeled clientele. Juan Carlos works fulltime as an artist, creating paintings, minimalist sculptures and his in-demand butterfly assemblages. Often, the pair finds themselves

working together, with many of Juan Carlos’ pieces adorning the homes Jeffrey designs. “We learned early on that we’re not intended to go into business together,” Jeffrey says. “Rather, we’re meant to work on selected projects together.”

The duo met through friends in 2013, when Jeffrey was on vacation in Raleigh, North Carolina, where Juan Carlos lived. On a whim, Jeffrey asked Juan Carlos to join him on an excursion to look for a rug for a client in nearby High Point’s renowned home furnishings market. In a rom-com-worthy meet cute that would make Nora Ephron proud, the two creatives spent a day perusing textiles and realized it wasn’t just their sharply honed sense for aesthetics that was well-suited. “I was in my late 30s,” Juan Carlos recalls. “I was happy to be single; I adored my friends; I had a life. Then, in comes Jeffrey on vacation.” After spending the entire day together, they realized they were fated to be together. “And so it’s been ever since,” Jeffrey adds.

Jeffrey’s career began in New York City in the late 1990s, when the Canadian émigré redesigned silver screen legend Diahann Carroll’s living room in her Upper West Side apartment. Jeffrey, who studied fashion design at Ryerson University and apprenticed for eveningwear designer Wayne Clark (whom he describes as Canada’s Oscar de la Renta), met Diahann while working as a costumer for headed-to-Broadway musicals. The two met on set for a Canadian production of Sunset Boulevard in 1995, which led to her hiring Jeffrey as her personal dresser, stylist and, ultimately, redecorator. “We had the walls upholstered in the lightest apricot moire,” he recalls, referring to the textile known for its wavy, undulating weave. “Miss Carroll told me ladies look best dining in rooms with lighting that casts a faint pink tone upon their skin.”

By 1999, he’d started an eponymous atelier with his sister, Deborah, producing luxury bedding and linens. The collections attracted major buzz in North American design markets and helped him get cast as a host on Canadian interior makeover show Arresting Design, for which he filmed 65 episodes between 2003 and 2005. “It encompassed

all my talents,” he says of the show. “During this time, I realized I wanted to design interiors full-time.”

Meanwhile, Miami native Juan Carlos was in Milan, working as a textile designer at Melvin Anderson Studios. From the onset, the artist showed dexterity and focus honed since he was a child inspired by his father, a marble mason from Cuba.

After graduating from Miami Dade College with a degree in painting and printmaking in 1987, Juan Carlos headed to Milan, followed by forays into furniture design in San Francisco, lighting design in North Carolina and fashion styling in Miami, plus a stint in banking. When he met Jeffrey, he’d been working in a spa and as a waiter for six years, trying to support himself as an artist. Strolling through showrooms with Jeffrey on their first date in High Point, he recalls being more captivated by framed prints than rugs. “I felt like, why am I struggling? I could be doing this,” he recalls.

The couple is renovating their 1970s Naples property, which also houses a backyard studio for Juan Carlos. “We’re playing in the design sandbox very well together. Juan Carlos’ studio holds a Magis Puppy sculpture by Eero Aarnio, Mart Stam chair and prototypes for the artist’s new Africana series. The works are inspired by a trip the couple took to Kenya and Rwanda. “The trip turned my world upside down,” he says.

Jeffrey describes their aesthetic as “Japanese meets midcentury meets minimalism meets maximalism meets modern meets … ” The den features art by Carol Klein, Melvin Anderson, Ellsworth Kelly and Roberto Azank, along with artifacts from the couple’s travels. The coffee table is Isamu

They often collaborate on projects, with Juan Carlos creating custom works for Jeffrey’s design clients. In the living room, Juan Carlos’ Out of His League painting hangs behind a sofa by Barber Osgerby and the Chauncey bronze rabbit sculpture by Jim Budish. The butterfly assemblage on the wall and sculpture on the side table are also by Juan Carlos.

Florida home. “One project led to another,” Jeffrey says. He and Juan Carlos settled in Naples two years later and now call the Gulf Coast their full-time home. Clients covet Jeffrey’s penchant for selecting and placing texture— rich upholstery, gleaming vases for pops of color or Moroccan-inspired mosaic backsplashes—to break up the atmospheric neutrals he favors for walls and floors. (Embroidered throw pillows can be swapped out much more easily than travertine, after all.)

His clients love that they can easily include artwork from Juan Carlos in their homes. “His butterfly assemblage pieces are so beautifully relatable that I never tire of placing them,” Jeffrey says. “I love to come home at the end of a day and see his latest color combo and patterns.” Despite his enthusiasm for his husband’s work, Jeffrey’s careful not to force it on his clients. “As we know, art is personal, and if it’s not their taste, I certainly will not push it,” he clarifies. If one of Jeffrey’s clients commissions Juan Carlos, Jeffrey errs on the side of giving clients and the artist their own space.

“Some like working directly with Juan Carlos and others like me acting as the middle person.”

Besides creating artwork to adorn Jeffrey’s designs, Juan Carlos is represented by 13 galleries across North America; he recently hired assistants to keep up with demand. “I took a leap with the support of my now-husband,” he says. “He gave me a lot of courage in the beginning.” Locally, you might see his assemblages at Naples’ Gardner Colby gallery, where kaleidoscopes of butterflies, fashioned from dyed, handpainted feathers, dance and converge in organic formations on linen-wrapped panels. Sometimes, he arranges the butterflies into stark geometric patterns, like those found in his acrylic paintings and sculptures (ranging from stone to sleek acrylic boxes). The painstakingly executed abstractions revolve around the color and placement of shapes, revealing the influence of 20th-century minimalist artists, like Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Calder.

“I guess it all starts with beauty,” Juan Carlos says. “I only see beauty, and if it’s not beautiful but has potential, then I want to alter it until it’s pleasant to me. This is why my surroundings are

so important.” Working out of a poolside studio in the couple’s backyard, he’s keenly aware of the interiors. “Over the years, Jeffrey has realized this and has been kind enough to allow me to design our space, even though he is the true expert,” says Juan Carlos, who, much to Jeffrey’s chagrin, is always rearranging the sofas. “He’s sweet that way.”

Whether collaborating professionally or designing their own home, Jeffrey says: “We’ve been together long enough to know when to stay in our own lanes and when to swerve.”

On a late January afternoon, the couple mixes drinks in an orderly living room peppered with jewel-toned throw pillows and Juan Carlos’ small sculptures. Even during the cacophonous construction of a new kitchen, primary closet and two bathrooms, the scene is serene. As their two rescue dogs clamor for attention at their feet, the designer and the

artist continue brainstorming their renovation, discussing how best to display Juan Carlos’ collection of Elsa Peretti boxes and where to integrate souvenirs from a recent trip to Africa. “We both appreciate well-designed spaces,” Jeffrey says, sipping his Paper Plane cocktail. “But if left unattended, I would be more of a maximalist than Juan Carlos.”

Juan Carlos demurs, “I used to think of Jeffrey as the ‘fancy’ designer, and I was the proud, well-designed minimalist. Recently, I’ve started to notice our design aesthetics overlap. I think we’ve agreed on every single thing.” Their unified look is shaping up to be what Jeffrey describes as “Japanese meets midcentury meets minimalism meets maximalism meets modern meets …” Any other inspiration could seep in as they renovate.

Juan Carlos reflects on how two creatives can curate a life together—not just by merging styles in their bungalow, but also in intertwining their stories: He thinks back to 2013, when the two of them sat on a Naples beach just weeks after meeting and started dreaming of a life together. “Ten years have passed; every plan and objective we dreamed of has come to be.”

Since meeting 10 years ago, the couple knew they were

fated to be together. The two have become central figures in Naples, where Jeffrey collaborates with nonprofits, including Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, and Juan Carlos shows at Gardner Colby Gallery in Old Naples.

A total-home renovation transforms a dated condo into a light-filled haven of contemporary delights.

When the owners of this two-story St. Lucia penthouse in Pelican Bay bought the unit as a vacation home in 2020, they were drawn to its location and water views. The former design was dark, dated and ready for an upgrade. The owners enlisted architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura Inc. to craft a new floorplan with walls of windows and The Lykos Group to introduce reflective surfaces and a mostly white palette.

The team’s goal was to maximize the penthouse setting and let unobstructed views reign. “As you approach the floor-to-ceiling glass, you have the illusion there’s no wall there. You have beautiful views of the ocean, beach and mangroves,” Lykos project manager Jim Elliott says.

The reno was a challenge—due to the condo being on the 15th floor and the materials used—but one that paid off. Since the elevator of the 1980s building was not large enough, the team used a crane to transport the drywall, doors and windows. Additionally, the heavy use of glass required extreme precision. “You only get one shot with glass. If it’s wrong, you have to redo it,”

Jim says. The owners wanted an open feel throughout, so the team installed a glass railing for the stairs, which features open risers, treads made of European wide-plank, white-oak engineered wood (to match the Legno Bastone floors in the main living areas) and a curved-glass railing. Florida Stairworks & Carpentry supported the railing with an interior steel column for functionality.

The stair structure was engineered to adhere to stringent code requirements following the Miami condo collapse in 2021. Alberto’s team replaced old windows and sliding glass doors with new Windoor impact-rated glass (which helped the condo stay damage-free during Hurricane Ian), designed two small screened lanais with code-compliant glass to add square footage in the living space, expanded several windows to maximize daylight and water views, and eliminated drop ceilings to boost headroom.

Lykos interior designer Brittney Mendez relied on clean lines and a crisp monochromatic aesthetic with hints of teal to mimic the ocean beckoning beyond the glass. “The homeowners wanted a look that was sleek and minimal but also included calculated details and a lot of shine, all while emphasizing the views,” she notes. baseboards, which are flush with the drywall, include a reglet detail. This brings flair to an oft-overlooked area, playing off the sleek glass walls. “The flush baseboards are such a streamlined and modern detail that makes a huge difference, and you don’t often see this in many homes,” she says.

Artful glass and gloss dominate the living spaces. In the kitchen, a chandelier of tubular pendant lights in polished nickel stretches across a massive Caesarstone island. Stainless-steelframed, lift-up doors with frosted glass inserts (selected with the help of cabinet designer Ivonne McCormick of High Tide Cabinetry) add a nice touch while concealing glassware above the wet bar. Harmoni Kitchens’ high-gloss white acrylic cabinetry and ultra-modern Miele appliances reflect the light from window walls nearby. The Lunada Bay backsplash tile, reminiscent of sea glass, adds more shine.

The most impressive glass feature in the home lies in the second-story multipurpose space overlooking the great room. The design team installed a tech-enabled glass that can frost for privacy—allowing the room to switch from

office space to a guest bedroom with the press of a button. The glass allows natural light to flood in without privacy concerns. Though with the home’s penthouse-level perch, there’s not much risk of onlookers. Even the builders never wanted to leave this reflective oasis. “With all that glass, it was a pleasure to work late to see the sun setting on the ocean,” Jim says.

Otherworldly, powerful, delicate—all describe Chicago artist Eric Gushee’s Exhalation series. As you move through the room, wires seem to shift, leaping from their frame and mesmerizing the viewer. The sculpture instantly caught Frank’s attention. “Gushee’s works reflect architectural design as well as natural and social sciences,” he says. Drawing on traditional fiber art techniques and biomimicry, Eric creates sculptures that echo the complex, repetitive systems found in nature. The result is a breath of fresh air, with industrial undertones and an ultimately ethereal quality.

When the late Ruben Sorhegui, a Cuban immigrant with an eye for design, launched his eponymous tile company in Naples 40 years ago, he started a legacy for forward-thinking, stylish work, bonding his family to the community for decades to come. Computer programming allows the company’s manufacturer to print high-resolution images onto handmade, weather and stain-resistant porcelain tiles. Although, Antonio typically sees clients opting for more traditional stone-like veining on their tiles. The result, he says, is nearly indistinguishable from natural marble or granite, and available in virtually any size and pattern. He likes to see statement applications, with entire walls covered in a single slab with perfectly book-matched veining or large-format floor tiles used to create a contemporary milieu.

The company prides itself on delivering form and function tailored to Southwest Florida’s needs. Porcelain tiles can come

in gritty, slip-resistant iterations to minimize falls on pool terraces. And, the wood-like options—nearly indistinguishable from lumber—provide an ideal solution for coastal homes struggling with water and salty air. After Hurricane Ian left many locals without floors, walls and, in some cases, homes, the Sorheguis launched a program to donate select 18-by-18 porcelain tiles in creamy and sandy neutral tones to those in need. Those who qualify can preview samples online and call the showroom to register. “It was an apocalyptic scene in the days following the hurricane, and we wanted to help as many people as we can,” Antonio says, noting the program will likely continue for a few years. “It’s important to give back because we’ve certainly gotten a lot from this community.”

Diving in Southwest Florida is an adventure thanks to the more than 280 sites off the coast. That number keeps growing as new reefs are created to provide stable habitats for fish, turning the Gulf into a hotbed for underwater exploration.

The newest oasis is in Lee County—The Mount, an artificial reef funded by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and The Sport Restoration Program. The reef, which sits 60 feet deep, is made with more than 1,000 tons of recycled concrete. Fish naturally took to The Mount within a couple of hours of its initial sinking, but it can take about three to five years for the site to fully flourish. Meanwhile, the 36 artificial reefs Collier County created from 2015 to 2016—one of the world’s largest projects of its kind—have had a chance to develop, offering plenty of opportunities to dive the Gulf.

Though it’s low impact, scuba diving— with the 40-plus pounds of gear needed and long underwater sessions—provides a strenuous workout that engages all the major muscle groups. The mental benefits of disconnecting and being surrounded by a watery ecosystem are monumental, too. Once you leap into the azure ocean and see a school of goliath groupers hovering around a 400-foot ship or a thriving coral reef system blooming on a 500-ton concrete piling, you may forget you’re exercising entirely.

Collier County continues to become more of a draw for divers since its 2015-2016, $1.35 million artificial reef project. Though Hurricane Ian has affected some sites throughout the region, local divers report conditions are good and continue to improve. For beginners, Clam Pass lies at 25 feet deep, with manatees, seahorses and bait fish. Doctor’s Pass, a 5-mile reef at 34 feet deep off the coast of North Naples, is known to host red groupers, angel fish and the occasional barracuda. Intermediate divers can travel

12 miles west of Doctor’s Pass to a shrimp boat wreck, which lies about 50 feet deep. Best reserved for experienced cave divers is Black Hole, 27 miles off the coast of Naples; the crater has a 100-foot circumference, and the bottom of the bell-shaped cavern lies at 225 feet (psst—the natural sinkhole is a great spot for underwater photography). Goliath groupers gravitate toward large, steel structures, like the 256-foot steamship Baja California. The ship was torpedoed by German U-boats conducting

underwater raids in Allied territory, off the coast of Marco Island, during World War II. Another stellar dive site that is often touted as the best in the area, Baja California has been at 115 feet since 1942; it’s covered in coral, sponges and wildlife.

Further north off Boca Grande Pass, divers can venture to Power Pole Reef. The site contains a reefed ship and dozens of concrete power poles donated by the county. More advanced divers can head 30 miles off the coast of Sanibel to the USCGC Mohawk, dedicated to U.S. veterans. It sits upright 90 feet down. Since it’s had a decade to settle, the 165-foot-long ship is teeming with anemones, sea sponges and coral. Although the hurricane and time have damaged the ship, the opportunity to see whale sharks in the fall as they stop off on their way to spawn in the Caribbean makes it well worth the visit. Expert athletes trek to British freighter BAYRONTO, which sunk at 100 feet, about 35 miles offshore from Boca Grande, after a hurricane in 1919. The largest shipwreck off Florida’s west coast is great for spearfishing. For guaranteed excitement, Fantastico, a 200-foot-long Honduran freighter that sank in 1993, sits about 40 miles off the coast of Fort Myers, with sharks, dolphins, amberjacks and hundreds of reef fish. Hundreds of goliath groupers congregate at Fantastico for spawning season (July to September), making for a fun late-summer trip.

Besides providing a great, low-impact workout, these man-made dive sites stand as a perfect example of conservation as a win-win for nature and humans. Marine life gets food, shelter and other essentials, and we get a place to admire the creatures of the sea in all their glory.

A Hungarian lymphatic massage doesn’t look like peak relaxation. Lighting the Way

Luminary Hotel & Co.’s new executive chef distinguishes each of the resort’s restaurants with regional heritage and cultural diversity.

Chef Mark Heimann’s mission was clear: Take six food-and-beverage venues in one Fort Myers resort and remaster their menus to reflect a blend of cultural influences, befitting their unique looks and concepts.

Luminary Hotel & Co. was open just shy of two years when Mark entered the kitchens. The (then) four restaurants and coffee roastery, in addition to the catering operations for Caloosa Sound Convention Center & Amphitheater and event spaces, proved prolific additions to downtown’s gastronomic landscape. Each venue draws on the history and cultural heritage of the city; each dish reflects Mark’s desire to keep food simple and let fresh ingredients speak for themselves. The ethos dates back to his childhood, where, as the oldest of three boys to business-owner parents, he often tackled dinner (or at least got it started for the family). “Since I was 8, I wanted to be a chef,” he says.

Mark, who later graduated from National Louis University’s Kendall College culinary school in Chicago, joined the Luminary team last summer after spending four years as the food and beverage director of the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Chicago. There, he oversaw 130 staffers. He wasn’t in the kitchens much and longed for the inherent creativity of being a chef and the chance to pass on some of the lessons he learned.

historic gem of downtown St. Petersburg, where he spent 23 years as executive sous chef, executive chef and, ultimately, director of restaurant operations.

Now, Mark is a dedicated chef when it comes to reflecting regional influences in the concepts he tackles, and it’s a challenge that excites him. “It’s an up-and-coming city area,” he says of Fort Myers. “We want to make The Luminary the place for food and beverage—one for guests and locals.” The idea shows in the breadth of the Marriott Autograph Collection’s offerings. Whereas the popular rooftop Beacon Social Drinkery exudes metropolitan youthfulness, The Silver King Ocean Brasserie anchors the Luminary’s design-forward lobby with its oceanic influences. Next door, Ella Mae’s Diner commemorates a late Fort Myers Black philanthropic doctor with notes of soul and Southern comfort food. Oxbow Bar & Grill, across the street on the river, leans coastal, with dishes like the cioppino—a spin on the San Francisco-style stew with Gulf shellfish, grouper and swordfish in a coconut broth. “When you walk into Oxbow, you’re struck by the amazing water views and casual feel created by the nautical colors and decor,” Mark says. “The menu reinforces this coastal, waterfront vibe with selections incorporating fresh, regionally sourced seafood and ingredients with flavors that speak to our roots. We use the same approach with each [restaurant].”

The chef’s creative dishes reflect his appreciation for Fort Myers’ positioning as an up-and-coming area for the culinarily curious. “We want to make The Luminary the place for food and beverage,” he says.

Topgolf simulation bays and a menu with dishes inspired by famed golf clubs: a pimento cheese sandwich straight out of the Masters at Augusta National in Georgia, and a brat topped with bacon, sauerkraut and sauteed onions like you find at the Whistling Straits Golf Course in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

And Mark isn’t just curating concepts. He’s shaping the future generation of culture-savvy chefs keen on keying into regional influences, like Ella Mae chef Angel Smith. “I don’t want to be the person that’s dictating every single menu, because you really don’t see a lot of people taking ownership or taking pride [in a menu] that’s not 100 percent theirs,” he says. For Mark, it’s about paying it forward. “Every chef that I’ve worked for, I’ve learned a ton from.” The mentorship approach also helps him ensure consistency at all the restaurants, even when he can’t be there.

As for the future of the Luminary’s culinary program, Mark expects he’ll keep mixing it up. “I always look for opportunities to draw on diverse flavors and styles of other cultures,” he says. And, the Chicago-born chef has plenty to draw from as Fort Myers’ River District continues its growth and evolution, with the hotel’s restaurants as a beacon of good things to come and Mark lighting the way.

FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY

Back to the Future

Southwest Florida has attracted stylish visitors and famous designers for decades, most notably after the opening of Marissa Collections in 1975. That’s when Marissa Hartington started bringing in big names, like Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera. This year, the Pink Palace, as the boutique is known, headlines Naples Botanical Garden’s Hats in the Gardens with a runway show by Oscar de la Renta. The upcoming festivities have us thinking back to a 1976 story from Gulfshore Life ’s then-fashion editor, Betty Shirwin. She reported on a stunning Yves Saint Laurent look and the season’s trends— metallic sheen, statement capes, sleek hair—all of which have returned for 2023. We look forward to seeing you shine among the blooms in the spectacular parade of fashion at this month’s Hats.
