welcome Welcome to a New Year and a new edition of St. Armands Magazine!

Within the pages of this 14th edition of our annual publication is a brief glimpse of what awaits you upon your visit to the “charmed Circle” in 2015. There’s always something happening, so make sure to check out our exciting calendar of events. You’ll find everything from art festivals to a wonderful family Halloween event, a tasting event that’s a gourmet delight, and spectacular car shows featuring automobiles including fabulous Ferraris, posh Porsches, classic Corvettes and classic antiques, as well as the

newest makes and models to grace the showroom floors. And of course you don’t want to miss the most magical experience of all, Holiday Night of Lights—our holiday season extravaganza. A trip to St. Armands Circle is always a memorable one, whether it’s your first or your 100th time. Pick up one of our statue brochures and take a leisurely stroll on the self-guided walking tour of our beautiful statues, located throughout St. Armands Circle. Don’t forget to take a walk around the Circus Ring of Fame in the Circle Park. The Ring celebrates the legacy of our founder, circus magnate John Ringling, and our historical connection to the circus and its numerous outstanding performers. Since the Circle is set in a lush tropical island setting, only steps from the Gulf of Mexico, you’re sure to relax and unwind and let your cares fade away. Whether shopping for trinkets and treasures, high fashion, home 2

décor or gourmet snacks and candlelit feasts under the stars, you’ll find it all on St. Armands Circle. We are honored to have received another 4 ½ star rating from TripAdvisor, and to be awarded the “Certificate of Excellence Award” for our continued standard of excellence. Of course, we are also proud to share that St. Armands Circle is one of only three high-end shopping destinations in the United States that produces its own exclusive magazine. Our magazine is circulated nationwide and reminds its readers of the uniqueness, charm, history and style that have made St. Armands world-renowned. Visit our website, starmandscircleassoc.com, to stay in touch with all that is uniquely St. Armands throughout the year. So, I invite you to come and join us! As we celebrate our 89th year, our 138 merchants are committed to making your visit as memorable as it is rewarding. Visit for a day or stay for a lifetime; the St. Armands experience is one you won’t soon forget. You’ll discover you won’t have to travel far to find the world’s treasures; they’re all here on St. Armands Circle. On behalf of all of the members of the St. Armands Circle Association, welcome to St. Armands—the Jewel of Sarasota. Diana M. Corrigan Executive Director St. Armands Circle Association

New and noteworthy from St. Armands Circle.

WHAT’s NEW Blu Kouzina; the Perfect Find, a spot for jewelry, lamps, wooden boxes and stones (941-388-5200); Just Because, a gift shop with everything from ceramic bowls to sculptures (941388-1939); and footwear mecca Charleston Shoe Company (941- 702-5609). The Circle also now boasts Tervis Tumbler (941-388-2040) and Boston Proper (941-536-2644). Inside Touch of Africa (1-877-480-6881) is a new Hamba Lounge where customers can taste South African wines and teas. “Hamba” means “travel” in Zulu (one of 11 official languages in South Africa), and the spot is considered a “casual travel library” with books, magazines, videos and sips. That’s Fresh Organic Juice Bar (844-842-8737) is a beloved recent addition, and the Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen from Tampa is moving into the space Tango occupied (813-4755916). Also, mainstay Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar (941-388-2446) is expanding to offer outside café seating. “It’s exciting. A lot of people are really investing in St. Armands Circle. New businesses are giving us more of a variety of shopping options,” Corrigan says. “To see Crab & Fin do an entire remodel and Daiquiri Deck expand is a big investment, and it shows the confidence that they have in the Circle. Businesses want to be here. They recognize how special it is.”

Evolution is one of St. Armands Circle’s

constants. The anchoring

restaurants, shops and cafés may never intend to leave, but they don’t shy away from undertaking makeovers to stay modern. And new businesses file into the storefronts, keeping shoppers guessing and stimulated by one-of-a-kind wares. Each year, whether spectators are arriving for annual trips or relishing staycations, there are surprises as well as comforting staples. Boston Proper “We are continuing to grow, for sure, and it’s very exciting. People love the experience because you just can’t recreate the physical footprint of St. Armands,” says Diana Corrigan, the executive director of St. Armands Circle Association. “You’re on an island, a blockand-a-half from the Gulf, walking outside, having a European experience, surrounded by history. There’s nothing like it.” Within the past year, longtime Circle fave Crab & Fin (941-3883964) underwent an entire remodel for a brand-new look. The Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar (941-388-3325) grew to encompass the downstairs space as well as the established balcony, making it a two-tiered nightlife hub. Several new businesses have made the Circle their home, including the Greek restaurant Tervis Tumbler

GUYS’ BUYS

Mod World Just blocks from St. Armands Circle, the wa-

terfront neighborhood of Lido Shores is a testament to a mid-century modern architectural movement so revered that it has its own name: the Sarasota School of Architecture. Sarasota School architects—among them Victor Lundy, Ralph Twitchell, Jack West and most famously Paul Rudolph, later dean of the Yale School of Architecture—blurred the lines between the indoors and our subtropical environment with oversized sliding glass doors, sunshades, screens and ventilation systems that made the hot Florida weather bearable. These were modest homes made of humble materials—terrazzo floors, jalousie windows—that focused on light and shade. “Sarasota in the 1950s was one of the most important places in the world for architectural creativity, where the greatest design movements of the day came together,” Carl Abbott, an original member of the Sarasota School, recently said in a talk to members of Sarasota Architectural Foundation. In Lido Shores you’ll find more than a dozen residences either built during the School’s heyday of the 1940s through ’60s or inspired by it. An outstanding example: the Umbrella House at 1300 Westway Drive, designed by Rudolph and hailed by Architectural Digest as “one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid twentieth century.” While not open to the public, the Umbrella House is definitely worth a drive-by. Want to learn more? A free booklet, Tour Sarasota Architecture, developed by the Sarasota Architectural Foundation, Visit Sarasota County and the Ringling College of Art and Design, is available at the Sarasota Tourist Information Center.

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, prepare to enter the “Ring of Fame.” Since 1987, this landmark (at St. Armands’ central Circle Park) has been a testament to Sarasota’s Big Top heritage. The public nominates honorees every year to receive a bronze wheel plaque, and an induction ceremony draws scores of circus veterans from all over the world. Plaques pay homage to animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams, clowns Lou Jacobs and Emmett Kelly, and showmen P.T. Barnum and John Ringling (the latter, of course, was the entrepreneur who brought the circus to Sarasota). In 2014, Sarasota’s own record-breaking daredevil and wire walker, Nik Wallenda, was inducted. Wallenda is a seventh-generation member of the Flying Wallendas whose wire walks over Niagara Falls in 2012 and the Grand Canyon in 2013 dazzled millions. In November, he successfully walked on a tightrope 50 stories above the Chicago River.

PADDLEBOARDERS, BRING YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT TO LIDO BEACH for your favorite

surface water sport on the Gulf, or rent a temporary board from one of our local companies. A night tour just before sunset, using a board with light-emitting diodes, could take you through Sarasota’s secluded waterways for a memorable multihued light show. If kayaking is your M.O., a number of local businesses can rent you a boat and paddles for tooling around the aquamarine waters. The South Lido mangrove tunnels are packed with indigenous wildlife, from great blue herons and snowy egrets to manatees and dolphins. Be sure to look for Florida horse conch shells and clams in this protected, shallow area.

In addition to numerous spots on the Circle, you’ll find parking on John Ringling Boulevard, Boulevard of Presidents, Madison Drive, Monroe Drive, and North and South Adams Drive. Navigate the routes by following the purple, pink, aqua and gold quadrants, identified by the colored banners on the lampposts. When you intend to make your trip a beach day, keep your vehicle at the lot on Lido Key Public Beach. The three-hour parking limit on the Circle runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday (prime hours for shops to remain open). There’s unlimited free parking 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Saturday and 24-hour free parking Saturday and Sundays.

Practice your downward-facing dog and shavasana with a little yoga on the beach, either during the heat of the day or underneath a cool full moon. Listen to the crashing waves of the Gulf, feel the powdery sand in your toes and inhale the sea air. Just bring a mat, a blanket, comfortable clothes and a water bottle, and prepare for a natural dose of tranquility. Local yoga studios often offer these experiences, so keep an eye out for events, or go solo. Walking, jogging or running along the John Ringling Causeway bridge is a cardio lover’s paradise, as it provides a challenging incline, an intense aerobic workout and, of course, the most breathtaking panoramic views of Sarasota Bay and glimpses of the Gulf beyond. This spot is so popular it makes for a social event (you will likely have a literal run-in with an acquaintance). Don’t forget your ear buds and mp3s.

Joan Morgan & Eric Seace Dream Weaver Collection 364 ST. ARMANDS CIRCLE SARASOTA, FL 34236 (941) 388-1974 DREAMWEAVERCOLLECTION.COM

How did your family come to St. Armands Circle? Joan: I had a craft store on Martha’s Vineyard for many years. After hearing about famous St. Armands Circle from our clients, we headed south and opened a small craft store above the Columbia Restaurant in 1982. Then in 1989 I opened Dream Weaver Collection specializing in wearable art at our current location. What makes Dream Weaver unique? Joan: Coming from an arts and crafts background, I’ve kept the concept throughout Dream Weaver. We support small designers from all over the U.S., Canada and several European countries. We specialize in very limited-edition clothing and accessories, many of which can be custom ordered. Eric, you help operate Dream Weaver and were president of the Circle’s association twice; how did you become so deeply connected to St. Armands Circle? Eric: I grew up here appreciating all this area has to offer. After many years with The Melting Pot as the vice president, I wanted to come back to Sarasota. I started helping Mom with the business side of Dream Weaver, and then I got involved with the association. I was able to help make many wonderful changes in this unique shopping mecca that we love and protect like a family member. And you also own three Massage Envy locations in Sarasota? Yes, we have about 150 great local team members that provide the best massages in town. I enjoy Massage Envy and Dream Weaver; both specialize in customer service and making people feel good.

What is it like to experience The Met Fashion House, Day Spa & Salon? We started our business with the intention of being our best; internally as a company and externally to the client. Our highly knowledgeable team is passionate and driven to do their best for our clients. Our goal is for every client to experience a curated selection of designer fashions and beauty services in a relaxing, welcoming environment. In today’s competitive environment, what is unique to your experience? Personal attention and client relationships are pinnacle to our brand. We search for unique products and services and regularly hand-select items for our clients. At the end of the day, I think clients feel drawn to people they know and appreciate. We know that there are choices, and we truly appreciate clients that choose to be part of our lifestyle. Why are relationships and experience so important to you? As we have evolved in business, we know that without relationships, we are alone. For example, this photograph was in partnership with State of the Arts Gallery, and photographer Barbara Banks. In one hour of the shoot, I hugged one of my favorite clients/friends, laughed with my wife/ partner, and looked through the lens with two great artists. I love having such special moments based on relationships. Having so much history in Sarasota, we thrive in the personal involvement the city has to offer.

What brought you to Sarasota? We’ve been visiting Sarasota since 1992, and we knew that one day we would make the move here. What better place to enjoy life? Great restaurants, museums, the theater and of course the beaches. Why People’s Pottery? There are more shops and restaurants at St. Armands Circle than at the new UTC mall. Unlike mall shopping, the Circle offers unique items you can’t get anywhere else. People’s Pottery has been a fixture here for 12 years. Any changes coming? The basic makeup will stay the same, but new products are what keep stores fresh and successful. Please come by and see what we’re doing. And if there are products you’d like to see, we are always open to new ideas. 25 1

i don’t remember the last time I saw a sunset inside a shopping mall—do you?

I’m not talking about a decorative wall mural or a painted tropical canvas, I mean a real seagull-filled, sherbet-hued sky over a glistening Gulf. It isn’t every day you get to blend stunning scenery with window browsing, dining and gallery hopping. It is even rarer— in the traditional buying sphere—to have a Europeanesque al fresco café experience before buying a swimsuit for a dip in the sea, and being able to walk from shop to shore. In a world rife with retail rectangles, it’s a soul-soothing move to “Get out of the Box. Get into the Circle.” This is the St. Armands motto, and it is a whole lot more than literal. 26

The Circle is one of Sarasota’s most unforgettable tourist hubs and loved by vacationers from across the globe. On any given day, a smattering of accents can be overheard in the air—Scandinavian greetings, German expressions, French chitchat—making it feel like a passport-free world tour. Visitors and local residents come to the marketplace for continental fare, independent boutiques with coastal baubles, specialty gift shops, salons, spas and art galleries. Just two blocks from the Gulf of Mexico and the beaches of Lido Key, slightly south of Longboat Key, and two miles east of downtown Sarasota (which is an idyllic drive over the John Ringling Causeway and the Intracoastal Waterway), the Circle is the antithesis of the traditional mall or outlet. It has heart. It has individuality. It has real diversity and rich culture that spans nearly 100 years. The Circle was the vision of circus tycoon John Ringling, who purchased St. Armands Key in 1917. Ringling provided input for the design of the streets and donated the stillstanding Italian statues from his personal art collection. He initially planned the Circle as an upscale development with residences and posh shopping, all revolving around a roundabout. Ringling fought to make his idea materialize in the 1920s only to be derailed by the stock market crash of 1929. But after World War II, the Circle was resuscitated. Today, it is home to more than 130 businesses— a feat that would likely please its founder. It seems that, every year, another landmass in Sarasota-Manatee is razed and a brand-new development is erected in its place. But in an age of teardowns and redos, the Circle retains its classic shape. Who needs to be boxed in when there is fresh-air roaming to do, conversations to hear, people to watch and a beach to walk after dinner? Every anniversary, every birthday, every milestone is more memorable in an environment that has a spirit and a story to tell. 27

ST. ARMANDS KEY LUTHERAN CHURCH

last look The impresario of St. Armands Circle.

Many of us know the name John Ringling, seen at left, from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which he moved to Sarasota for its winter quarters in the 1920s. But prior to that, Ringling had already acquired a number of properties here, including the land that is now St. Armands Circle. Always a visionary, Ringling (and fellow developer Owen Burns) planned a high-end residential development, Ringling Isles, on St. Armands Key, along with a shopping center laid out in a circle. But sales never took off, and the stock market crash of 1929 left Ringling in financial straits and his project incomplete. Years later, though, St. Armands has become what the circus king wanted it to be. And statues from his personal collection dot the shopping mecca today, keeping his presence very much a part of the Circle.
