art create learn magazine

It’s the end of the year and traditionally a great time to take stock of the year’s accomplishments, as well as a great time to start planning for 2023. The Vincent Van Gogh quote “great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together” is my inspiration for this third issue – The Holiday publication. I learned this year that it’s easy to come up with new ideas, but starting is where the difficulties begin. Breaking my process into small steps helped me to accomplish more, and yet one of the major problems was and still is the lack of time. Working efficiently and delegating when necessary are two keys to success. Art Create Learn (ACL) is a project that I undertook with great enthusiasm regardless of the challenges that I knowingly faced. I’m happy to report that despite some minor roadblocks, my enthusiasm has not diminished, but grown. Small steps equal big gains! My hope for this upcoming 2023 is to be able to balance my time as the Creative Director of ACL with my own creative endeavors as a full time artist. And, of course, there is the professional and personal balancing act that many of us navigate day to day. I hope you will find this third issue an enjoyable read, as well as a useful source of information for you and your family. Inside The Holiday issue you will find a great master class by Katrina Rutter on how to create a holiday card, and from Leona MacIntyre, art therapy tips perfectly designed to reduce stress, particularly useful during the rush of the holiday season. Further, you will find other useful articles and tips designed to provide holiday inspiration. And, as usual, there is a listing of local artists, showcasing their recent work. May every article you find in our magazine be the motivation to live a more creative life, to live the inspired life that you’ve always wanted, and to know that there is a supportive community of artists and patrons cheering you on in that direction. I wish all our readers, artists, writers, and friends of Art, Create, Learn, a peaceful sky over their heads, optimal health & happiness, and a wonderfully creative 2023! Happy Holiday Season! Gulnaz Turdalieva Founder & Creative Director

andmade gifts add a sweet personal touch to the gift exchange, especially in a time that has become more materialistic. People in the 20th century gave useful gifts, such as sewing boxes or handmade photo albums, which provided a service throughout the year. Gifts either handmade or store bought always had a purpose for the recipient for the remaining 364 days of the year. In 2022, children are often gifted with many toys under the tree on Christmas morning. Much different from the children in the 20th century who received one or two toys – dolly or teddy bear. During the Great Depression and WW2 when money was tight, handmade cards with warm pairs of knitted woolen socks were a favourite gift in the stocking.

ABSTRACTED REALITIES October 7, 2022, to February 19, 2023 Featuring the works of The Artists of Colour at Art Windsor-Essex. This exhibition offers a varied collection of visual, written, and musical narratives of nine local Black artists.

Black artists of the past have been abstracted or excluded from mainstream art galleries for centuries. Today, the works of many eminent Black artists have been recognized as significant narratives that have taken their place with other influential artists.

Considering Renting a Creative Studio/Space? by Lorraine Steele

Let us introduce ourselves: Shō Art Studios! Some background history.... Shō Art Studios is a not-for-profit Arts, Heritage and Cultural hub housed in the Danzig industrial complex, 628 Monmouth Road. Shō began a little over a decade ago (how time flies!) as a small 1,000 sq. ft. ‘art happening’ pop-up garage. The original studio still exists, behind the red door and in that first studio over the past decade we have produced original plays, visual art shows, musicals and created a lot of wonderful art. Currently, Shō has developed over 32,500 sq.ft. of arts infrastructure in the Danzig building and manages 22 artist/vendor studios including 2 performance venues.

Things to consider when looking for a creative space: #1. A professional space to see clients who are interested in your work.

We invite you to stop by, visit with us, meet the many creatives working here and see the gem that is Shō Art Studios !

#2. The ability to set a studio up permanently and how you like it (not having to remove or reset things that may need resetting – the kitchen table comes to mind!).

Susan McLeod Lorraine Steele

#3. On the heels of #2, get the work-life balance you desire....once in the creative stream there won’t be mundane distractions (like dishes to do!). #4. Setting creative productive hours in your own studio; once in your studio, no need to switch gears – you are there to work. #5. In a creative hub like Shō Art Studios, you connect with an enhanced creative community where you may meet and interact with other artists, grow your art network, learn from and be engaged in stimulating conversations with like-minded creatives.

How and why did you choose bronze for your sculptures? Is it expensive to work in bronze and do you work with other materials? I initially create sculptures in an oil-based clay then deliver it to the foundry where they create a soft mould out of a rubber silicone, then a hard shell out of fibreglass. The clay is removed and replaced with melted wax. Depending on the size of the sculpture, the cooled wax is then cut into pieces and each is hung and sprayed with a ceramic coating. The pieces are vented and placed in the kiln where they melt the wax out and fill the void with melted bronze. The ceramic is then chipped off the cooled bronze and each piece is sand blasted and soldered together. The final stage is when the whole figure is then sometimes heated and a patina is applied. This is called the “lost wax” method and it is very labour intensive and the reason it is so expensive.

to self-doubt and self-love. Nothing should remain untouched. Not in his darkening. Concentrate. Concentrate,

I would have liked to be his woman. Even if he couldn’t belong to anyone like the moon swimming its shine on a lake, on behalf of the sun.

His language was passion,

note what’s missing from the city of Four Darks in Red. People. Their flatness, the awkward color of pale skin, the city. Instead, the way they mix and speak of multitudes and concrete.

The slow swirl at the edge of the sea, then shapes and colors without landscape, seascape, cityscape,

Silence is so accurate, and why should we not believe him sitting in front of the many gates of his frames?

without flesh, without metal voices of churches, without dogs sleeping in the colorless dust of villages, without jungles like Rousseau’s, lions coming upon a nude.

Square suns make red and yellow, summer on his canvasses.

He absorbed luminosity, made it the new range of depth.

Imagine how he opened the beast in his wrists. I would have liked to be his woman. To have been there to bless even the red.

Feel the arrogance of white. Feel winter well painted. Feel something, feel any goddamn primitive emotions, he would demand.

Feel all of it, the protective oils, the nerve path winter 2022 |artcreatelearn.com |37
