Emotions are an essential part of who we are

For some, Fall is a favourite season filled with bright colours, crisp air and cozy nights around a fire. For others, it is the conclusion to the longer days of summer and the slow encroachment of darkness – a certain gloominess looms and an unspoken sense of longing permeates our being. Whether happy, sad or in between, emotions run high, inspiration takes hold and thoughts deepen during the Fall season.

Many things depend on our internal state. If the soul is calm and centred, then no rain and wind can seriously spoil the mood. Regardless, sometimes you need to recharge. How do we foster positive emotions in the Fall Season?

There are many options: - attend art shows, master classes, movies, poetry readings, concerts, live theatre performances and other cultural events. This will definitely help you get energized. Communicate with interesting and creative people, gather new information, and be stirred to create new art for yourself or others. All of these pursuits generate positive emotions, health and well-being. Above all, art makes life more interesting. It motivates. Art in all its forms, allows us to embrace life to the fullest.

- learn something new. Fall is perfect for this purpose. It’s a pattern that we all know so well as children. It’s a great time to embrace that same sense of child-like inquisitiveness and that excitement about learning something new. It’s a time when imagination takes hold. Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint? Study the basics of pottery? Fashion a piece of jewelry or whittle a piece of wood? How about trying your hand at screen-writing or filming a documentary? Sometimes it is best to dive right in, but at other times we seek assistance to make our artistic dreams come true.

Hopefully, ART CREATE LEARN will inspire you to search out courses, master classes, and seminars, whether online or in person. Above all, life-long learning is a process that fosters favourable emotions – it’s a feel good elixir! Drink it in! I bid you much Autumn inspiration, and as many beneficial emotions as possible.

Cheers!

Acrylic Mediums: The Star of the Modern Painting World

Liquitex and Finnabair – these can be used out of the jar or mixed with acrylic paint.

Make a watercolour-like wash:

- Use Flow Aid by Liquitex or Wetting Agent by Golden. Follow the directions on the bottle for the proper introduction to water and paint. Never use plain water to thin your acrylics by more than 25%, as this may reduce the adherence properties of the paint to your surface.

Acrylic Mediums are the brilliant celebrities of the art materials world. Experienced and beginner painters alike can use these versatile mediums to enhance and aid the creative process.

The product choices are staggering! Let’s shed a little light on the subject by sorting some options into application categories, with some of our favourite brands.

I want to…

Blend two colours into a soft edge:

- Use Gel Medium (available in gloss or matte). This will allow for subtle brush strokes to remain. Try Gloss, Satin and Matte Mediums– Museum, Golden and Liquitex.

Make thin lines by improving the flow of the paint:

- Use Gloss, Satin or Matte Medium– Golden, Liquitex, Museum. Try a Flow Improver– Flow Aid by Liquitex, Golden’s High Flow Medium.

Give more time to work the paint before it dries:

- Try to use Acrylic Retarder– Golden, Museum and Liquitex. Open Acrylics by Golden are currently available to order and have a slower drying time.

Apply collage material and paint over it:

- Use Gloss or Matte Gel Medium– Golden and Museum brands, also Mod Podge works well. Be aware that Mod Podge will yellow over time when exposed to sun– except for Outdoor Mod Podge. A textured effect for collage can be made with Modeling Paste (or molding paste). Items can also be embedded into the paste with excellent adhesion. Try to use Golden,

Add texture:

- For creating texture there is a large variety of textured gels available– pumice, beads, sand, string effects, etc. These gels can be used as an under-painting technique or mixed with paint.

Add shine:

- Apply Iridescent Medium (Liquitex) or Gloss Glazing Medium (Golden) mixed into your paint to add a shine. Use a Gloss Varnish only when the painting surface is dry.

Make a coloured glaze to make your painting more vibrant, sunny or stormy:

- Mix a small amount of paint into Golden’s Glazing Medium, available in Gloss, Satin or Matte.

- Mica Powders are available in many shiny colours and can be mixed with pouring mediums, clear top coats, glazing medium and varnishes. Micas also work wonderfully with resin. Mixing them into a clear medium on top of your painting allows the light to shine through!

Use an Impasto effect:

- Modeling Paste or Molding Paste can be used alone and painted over, or mixed with acrylic colour. They can also be carved or sanded when dry.

Harrow Fair 2022

because of a lack of confidence.

However, the advice I have received the most from professional artists more than once is “just do it, you never know, it’s only art!”

To you the artist, the artistic process involves hours and hours of blood, sweat, tears, paint, water, self-criticism and self-doubt. To the art aficionado, art is admired, appreciated and loved. Art often elicits deep emotions in the admirer.

When it was announced in April 2022 that the 166th HarrowFair was back up and running, the fire of creative spirit fluttered inside me.

I immediately began to look at what the categories were for entering, such as the theme, the final details and the submission dates for finished pieces. As we know, Art during the pandemic has changed in a lot of ways. But for the faithful fair entrants, it begins an exciting time of year.

The Harrow Fair doesn’t open officially until Sept 1st. Already I have completed 1 entry and have practiced a few others. I’m hoping this year to enter in as many categories as possible.

As a local aspiring artist, I truly appreciate all the support and mentoring I receive from the local Windsor Essex Artists. I interact often with members of the Arts Council of Windsor and Essex, and the ASK Society of Kingsville. And I can tell you, the creative fires keep burning by visiting local galleries and art exhibits.

A main characteristic of a successful artist is that each ex hibitor must have confidence. It takes a lot of “gumption” to bring your pieces to the show, see them hung on the huge gallery walls and have the general public admire them. I can say regretfully that I have taken the shy route and passed on entering a show or two

In my personal “art as therapy journey,” the moment of silence in the gallery, as well as the awe experienced by the viewer while looking at a piece, is truly an achievement.

As the sun sets on another Harrow Fair, the paint brushes aren’t put away completely. Hints of the 2023 theme will be announced and artists will ponder whether or not to enter as an exhibitor in the upcoming show. The dream of coming home with a ribbon or trophy is closer for some than others, but nevertheless, all exhibitors are on a significant artistic journey that is often profound and life-enriching.

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”

The life of a butterfly symbolizes the life of an individual with a brain injury.

Much like a butterfly that develops from a caterpillar during the chrysalis process, the journey of a person with a brain injury can be transforming. Often, an individual with a brain injury is not the person that they once were. There is nor more striking symbol of a transformation than a butterfly. This transformation symbolically represents hope and new beginnings. This transformation happens with help from the right people from the Brain Injury Association.

The Brain Injury Association’s mission is to enhance the lives of those affected by an acquired brain injury through education, prevention, advocacy and support.

Butterfly Lane was created by sixteen local artists between the 1100 blocks of Argyle and Devonshire Roads in Walkerville to bring awareness of the prevalence of acquired brain injury. The colourful and beautiful murals all depict butterflies which represent the transformation a person with a brain injury goes through on their journey to recovery. Each mural has butterflies in it. Individual wooden butterflies were painted by survivors of a brain injury as their personal contribution to this project.

ArtCreate Learn is an online art space/magazine for Windsor Essex Artists run by the visual artist Gulnaz Turdalieva. This project provides local artists with an online space/mag in which to showcase their recent work and to share their artistic vision and insights into the creative process. The Art Create Learn project collects personal stories of artists, both visual and textual, as a means of sharing artistic skills, methods and experiences.

In four seasonal publications, this online arts project promotes Windsor-Essex artists and local arts & cultural organizations by listing them on the website and highlighting artists’ interviews and studio tips, as well as listing any useful art-related information, including but not limited to, the promotion of art classes, exhibitions, workshops and studio visits.

The mission of Art Create Learn is to support artists and to advance the knowledge and practice of contemporary visual arts and culture in Windsor-Essex. To provide residents and visitors alike with a virtual introduction and increased opportunities to view local art and meet local artists. The Arts & Cultural Alliance is a registered not-for-profit organization founded in 2011.

A membership-based organization, the Alliance’s goal is to strengthen the arts and cultural sectors through cooperative relationships, special events and community projects. Many artists and artisans work in isolation, we believe that making connections and forming networks is very important to the sustainability of the arts and cultural sector.

After a two year gap, the Alliance will once again host the Windsor Essex Open Studio Tour on the weekend of October 1st and 2nd, 2022.

EXHIBITION | SHOW & SALE | LIVE PAINTING

The Annual Windsor Essex Open Studio Tour is a 2-day event, offering rare insights into the behind-the-scenes workings of local artists, in their studios and workspaces. The Open Studio Tour is free to visitors and is held in conjunction with Cultural Day events each fall.

In 2019, the event attracted more than 600 visitors to the 12 sites, showcasing the work of more than 30 artists.

In 2022, during the Tour weekend, local artists will open their studios, engaging the public and inviting them to witness various artistic processes.

The Tour is both a marketing opportunity for serious professionals and a supportive environment to nurture and present new talent. Visitors on our self-guided tours are able to gain a greater understanding of the artistic processes involved in art-making. artsculturalalliance.org/open-studio-tour-1
