P1 SITE APPRECIATION AND RESPONSE


While the entire global attention was focused on the viral pandemic, Beirut was struck with another devastating tragedy, an explosion instantly causing 200+ deaths, wounding more than 6500 civilians, damaging about 12000 buildings displacing over 300,000 people out of their homes. August 4th of 2020 marked the day the biggest non-nuclear explosion ever recorded in history with a force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake took place and is believed to have been fueled by 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate confiscated by the government that was stored in a warehouse at the Port of Beirut. This devastating tragedy caused a chain reaction, disrupting food supplies, economies and creating physical damage to what was believed to be up to a 5km radius. Given the importance of it in being the primary focal connectivity of economy, food supply and societal balance, a reconstruction and redevelopment of the port is inevitable.

THE CATASTROPHE


The Port of Beirut is one of the biggest seaports in the Mediterranean region. The Port of Beirut's central location and deep waters accommodate the largest of modern vessels. Tourism, especially among Arabs, thrives, and the Port of Beirut is investing significantly in new tourism-oriented infrastructure. The Port of Beirut is the seat of Lebanon's government, and it plays a vital role in the country's economy.

LESS THAN A MONTH'S GRAIN RESERVES Lebanon’s main grain silo at Beirut port was destroyed in a blast, leaving the nation with less than a month’s reserves of grain but enough flour to avoid a crisis. Lebanon’s government holds no strategic stockpile of grains and the blast destroyed the privately-held stocks at its only large grain silo 1. Lebanon's monthly wheat consumption is 40K tonnes 2. Blast destroyed 15k tonnes of wheat 3. Ships with 25k tonnes of flour being transfered to tripoli port 4. Beirut solios could hold up to 3months' worht of grain supplies

After the blast, Large sections of the port and its infrastructure were destroyed, including most of Beirut's grain reserves, and billions of dollars in damages were inflicted across the city. The Port of Beirut was forced to close, due to the large-scale damage caused by the explosions, with cargo being redirected to smaller ports, such as Tripoli and Tyre. Prior to the disaster, about 60 percent of Lebanon's imports came through the port, according to an S&P Global estimate.

SUPPLY CHAIN HALTED


Following the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut which saw loss of life and many vital services impacted, rebuild efforts have picked up pace and solutions to secure the power infrastructure. Public parks in Beirut are also very minimal. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum of 9 square meters of green space per capita, Beirut has only 0.8 square meters not all of which are public or accessible by the public. Therefore a dynamic framework for flexibility structuring is needed. To further connect the city center to the port of Beirut.

P2 URBAN/BUILDING STRATEGIES


The existing use of the site consists primarily of infrastructure, transportation, and logistics. The operations of the port and its related functions define the quality of much of the site and adjacent areas. What if, rather than attempting to suppress or insulate these uses from new development, they are considered as latencies capable of forming the identity of a new city? Can the introduction of new urban conditions benefit from and reinforce the site's existing (port) conditions?

Primary types form the majority of the program: residential, office, culture, retail, and hotel.

OMA QIANHAI PORT CITY PRECEDENT STUDY

The masterplan envisioned consists of three programmatic anchors: logistics, education, and healthcare. The anchors are closely related through innovation and research, and provide the basis for strategic and economic cooperation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.


The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long (2.33 km) elevated linear park, greenway, and rail trail created on a former New York Central Railroad spur on the west side of Manhattan in New York City. The high line was first created in the 1930s as an elevated rail line and remained in use until the 1980s. after many years of sitting empty, the first section of the high line is now completely renovated and the second part will open next year. the new design features a winding pathway accompanied by wildlife on each side. throughout the strip of elevated terrain, the architects also placed benches and other special areas for gathering.

P3 THE RENEWAL OF PORT OF BEIRUT


The Lloyd's building (sometimes known as the InsideOut Building)[3] is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London. It is located on the former site of East India House in Lime Street, in London's main financial district, the City of London. The building is a leading example of radical Bowellism architecture in which the services for the building, such as ducts and lifts, are located on the exterior to maximise space in the interior.

THE LLOYD'S BUILDING PRECEDENT STUDY


The Tokyo Forum competition entry produced ‘an urban people’s meeting place’ which could have been one of the practice’s greatest buildings. The site of the Forum occupies a key position on the boundary between Marunouchi, Tokyo's vital central business area, and the elegant Ginza shopping and entertainment district. The site faces the outer Imperial Palace Gardens to the west and is bounded on the east by the tracks of Japan Railways, the city's principal system of transportation. It is a highly consolidated urban setting characterized both by the grid of institutional buildings edging the Imperial Gardens and the curvilinear sweep of the railway.

TOKYO FORUM PRECEDENT STUDY


The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn is a suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany. Its original name is Einschienige Hängebahn System Eugen Langen. It is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world and is a unique system in Germany. The Wuppertal suspension railway is much more than just a means of transport, a landmark, and a tourist attraction: It is a wondrous stray in the history of technology, which to this day reliably travels back to the future.
