Dr. Sezer Olcay

QUESTION:

Can my child still eat Halloween candy with braces?

A

s popular as Halloween is, ironically October is also National Orthodontic health month. In the spirit of the sweet and spooky holiday, Dr Olcay suggests being careful with braces and Halloween treats. All those sweet, sour, and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as break braces, as well as delay precious treatment time! Hard, chewy candies, caramels, taffy, nutty goodies, jelly beans, licorice, bubble gum, suckers, and sour candies are some of the foods that can cause havoc for trickor-treaters who are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Sour and fruity candies, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which can wear down the enamel that protects them. This can cause tooth decay and cavities! So, what are the alternatives? Candy such as dark chocolate, or anything that contains the sugar substitute xylitol is not as harmful for your teeth as hard, chewy, or sticky sweets. Experts at the American Association of Orthodontists

recommend softer treats or melt-in-your-mouth foods. These include: soft chocolate, peanut butter cups, gelatin treats, ice cream and smoothies. I also encourage them to brush and floss between teeth immediately afterward, including around brackets and at the gum line. Also limiting number of snacking is important. Each time teeth come in contact with sweets acid production starts. So, one is better off eating all at once and brushing right after instead of nibbling the same amount over a long period. If you’re still looking for other braces-friendly alternatives, we recommend cutting up easy-to-eat fruits and vegetables such as an apple or banana. You would also be surprised how much eating a banana or sipping on a glass of water helps you curb snack cravings! n

“Lucky 13 ” Tips for a Safe Halloween

E

njoy a safe and happy Halloween by following the “lucky 13” guidelines from FDA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Wear costumes made of fire-retardant materials; look for “flame resistant” on the label. If you make your costume, use flame-resistant fabrics such as polyester or nylon.

1

Wear bright, reflective costumes or add strips of reflective tape so you’ll be more visible; make sure the costumes aren’t so long that you’re in danger of tripping.

2

3

Wear makeup and hats rather than masks that can obscure your vision.

Test the makeup you plan to use by put4 ting a small amount on the arm of the person who will be wearing it a couple of days in advance. If a rash, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation develop where the makeup was applied, that’s a sign of a possible allergy.

5 6

approved. If they aren’t approved for their intended use, don’t use it. Don’t wear decorative contact lenses unless you have seen an eye care professional and gotten a proper lens fitting and instructions for using the lenses.

6

7

Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home.

Trick-or-treaters should eat a snack before heading out, so they won’t be tempted to nibble on treats that haven’t been inspected.

8

9

Tell children not to accept—or eat—anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.

Parents of very young children should remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys.

10

Inspect commercially wrapped treats for 11 signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that Check FDA’s list of color additives looks suspicious. to see if makeup additives are FDA

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

For partygoers and party throwers, FDA recommends the following tips for two seasonal favorites: Look for the warning label to avoid juice that hasn’t been pasteurized or otherwise processed, especially packaged juice products that may have been made on site. When in doubt, ask! Always ask if you are unsure if a juice product is pasteurized or not. Normally, the juice found in your grocer’s frozen food case, refrigerated section, or on the shelf in boxes, bottles, or cans is pasteurized.

12

Before bobbing for apples—a favorite Halloween game—reduce the amount of bacteria that might be on apples by thoroughly rinsing them under cool running water. As an added precaution, use a produce brush to remove surface dirt.

13

Whether you’re goblin or ghoul, vampire or witch, poor costume choices—including decorative contact lenses and flammable costumes—and face paint allergies can haunt you long after Halloween if they cause injury. Be smart and safe and have a very Happy Halloween. n

QUESTION: How do I choose the right physical therapist?

The key to this question is to choose the physical therapist, not the physical therapy practice.

Y

ou are developing an important relationship with a healthcare provider that you may be with for an extended period of time to recover from an injury or after surgery. People are quite often referred to physical therapy for a consultation after seeing their physician or surgeon. What should you consider when choosing the right provider? • Credentials. You need to know the credentials of the person that will be performing an evaluation and subsequent treatment. • Experience. Do they have experience in your problem area? Do they have advanced skills or certifications? • C hoosing your own therapist. In some cases patients are referred to a practice, but not a specific physical therapist. Here you risk getting anyone that is available. They may not have the experience level, advanced clinical skills, or ownership in the facility.

• I s the therapist the owner of the practice? Will they be the only person treating you throughout the course of your recovery? This is among the most important trait—since practice owners will go above and beyond in helping you recover. You have a choice when seeing a physical therapist. Get a recommendation from a friend or family member and always choose based on the credentials and experience of the specific physical therapist that will be treating you. You can sometimes learn about the physical therapists on the practice website. If not, then the practice may only want you to know their name and not the individual therapists. db Orthopedic Physical Therapy’s two locations are staffed only by partners in the practice with advanced clinical skills. Call us for a consultation of your rehabilitation needs. n

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

Dr. Jessica Salas Mann

Question: Should I freeze my eggs? Fact: Women are born with a set number of eggs.

Fact: The chance of conception begins declining in our early 30’s, but more rapidly so after age 35 because of declining egg quality.

W

omen who may consider fertility preservation include women diagnosed with an illness that may render them infertile, women undergoing fertility treatment who may be opposed to freezing embryos, and women who wish to delay childbearing. Medical advances are allowing young women with cancer and other autoimmune disorders to lead a healthy life after beating the disease. However, for some women, the chance to have children in the future is not discussed in a timely fashion. Today, a patient can proceed with a procedure that would allow her to freeze her eggs in as little as 2 weeks. Infertile women with a partner may need assisted reproduction in the form of in vitro fertilization. For women who have a partner, the best way to preserve their fertility for future use would be to freeze embryos. However, some women may have ethical concerns regarding this choice of treatment. While it is possible to freeze eggs for future use, the recommended treatment of fertility preservation in this case would be embryo freezing.

As women in the workforce continue to excel and assume high power and important positions, their careers may be in conflict with their biological clock. Their eggs have an expiration date, and we cannot predict when this date will come. What we know is that certain things may accelerate the process of egg wastage. Women who smoke have lower quality eggs than non-smokers. Women with a history of endometriosis, previous pelvic surgery, or pelvic inflammatory disease are also at risk of low egg reserve. Egg freezing may allow women to follow their professional aspirations and be proactive about their fertility. The decision to freeze your eggs is not an easy choice. It can represent a financial and emotional burden. However, it may be the only real way to “turn back the clock.” You could be having a child at 38 with your own 30 year old eggs. n

Knee Pain Dr. Scot Paris

QUESTION: Is there any alternative to knee replacement surgery for arthritis pain?

O

steoarthritis of the knee is the #1 leading cause of disability in the U.S. Over 27 million people suffer with knee arthritis and that number continues to grow. With knee arthritis, the cartilage breaks down and wears away, leaving the bones to rub together causing pain swelling stiffness and limited range of motion. As the cartilage breaks down, the knee loses its lubricating fluid. We found that by replacing this lubricating fluid with a natural substance called Hyalgan, the lubrication is restored and many patients experience amazing pain relief.

What is Hyalgan and how does it work? Hyalgan is a natural lubricating fluid that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber inside the knee joint. The substance in Hyalgan is hyularonic acid which is normally found in high levels in healthy joints. Replacing the hyularonic acid with Hyalgan lubricates the joint and reduces pain. Hyalgan has been administered over 40 million times and has been proven to provide long-lasting relief of knee pain from osteoarthritis. What if you already tried knee injections? If you have had injections like this in the past and experienced poor results, there is still hope! Many doctors in this area offer similar injections, but very few use precision fluoroscopy guidance. Fluoroscopy guidance ensures that the pain relieving Hyalgan reaches the knee capsule where it bonds with the joint fluid to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. Without fluoroscopy, it is estimated that doctors “miss” the capsule over 30% of the time resulting in poor results. We want each and every one of our patients to have the greatest chance of success, so every injection is done with precision fluoroscopy guidance to ensure that the Hyalgan gets into the capsule 100% of the time. Because of this, patients who previously felt little to no relief with non-flouroscopy guided injection are now getting excellent results. The other “big difference” in our results is the multitude of other supportive care options that we have available to enhance the effectiveness of the Hyalgan procedure. These options include state of the art medical laser treatment, physical therapy, manipulation, corrective osteoarthritis bracing (takes pressure off the damaged section of the knee), and natural anti-inflammatory products. The combination of these treatments offers you what we feel is the most comprehensive non-surgical knee treatment program available. Does it hurt? Many of our patients report that they feel little to no pain at all! We do everything possible to minimize any pain from the procedure, from

pain relieving spray and a local anesthetic, to precision guidance that ensures we are always in the right spot. Will my insurance cover Hyalgan? This procedure is covered by most major insurance companies including Medicare. Our insurance department pre-verifies every patient. Who will be performing the Hyalgan procedure? Dr. Scot Paris is the medical physician who performs the Hyalgan injection. Dr. Paris is trained as a general surgeon and has extensive experience with a variety of surgical procedures. With his conservative approach, he has excelled in the non-surgical treatment of knee pain with the use of fluoroscopy guided Hyalgan injections. So how do I know if your knee pain treatment program will help me? If you are tired of suffering with painful arthritis of the knee, and you want to see if the latest advances in non-surgical treatment can help, all you have to do is call 732-683-1800 to set up a risk free consultation. During the consultation all of your questions will be answered in a warm and friendly environment. Knee replacement surgery is a very extreme measure to take without considering all of your other options first. Once it’s done there is no turning back. For that reason we encourage you to schedule an appointment to see if you are a candidate for Hyalgan treatment. We are proud to offer our patients a comprehensive knee pain treatment program that includes the best non-surgical methods to relieve pain all under one roof. We look forward to having the opportunity to help you feel better. Take the first step in ending your knee pain and call to schedule an appointment today! n

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

Question:

Robert Frankel, MD

How do you maintain your health and weight with hormonal balance and nutrition? Here’s the best approach to medical weight loss— The HCG Diet

I

mprove Health Solutions is a medical practice specializing in hormone replacement, weight loss, and metabolic natural medicine. When you've had enough of living the same way and achieving no results, come to our practice, where we view you as an individual, customizing treatment for you based on your hormone balance and other

factors. Unlike all other diet programs, HCG addresses the metabolic and hormonal reasons that cause you to gain weight. HCG literally resets your hypothalamus thus allowing your body to maintain your new weight.

The HCG diet works with your body and not against your body. HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone that is produced during pregnancy. The physician-guided, low calorie diet with the hormone targets belly fat instead of muscle. In Joanne Feliciano, PA time, the reduced fat assists in raising your metabolism. Although HCG is a hormone produced by pregnant women, the diet is safe for men and women, according to doctors. Our programs are done under medical supervision and the injections are 100% HCG that are mixed in our office so we know it is pure. Since you raise your metabolism, most on HCG keep the weight off after diet and keep losing. The drops on the Internet often are not effective and some do not even contain the hormone. Our programs are either a 23 day program for $399 or 40 day for $499.

Heres what some of our patients have to say about our medical weight loss program:

I've tried every diet out there. I'm a 47 year old woman and nothing worked for me until I tried the HCG diet. I've lost 20 lbs in 40 days

and feel fabulous. —Renee

After a few months on the HCG Diet, I tried on an old pair of slacks that I thought were too small. To my shock they fit and were a bit loose! I had lost 5 inches on my waist! —Donna

I've lost 41 pounds in 40 days using the HCG diet! This is not just a diet, it's a lifestyle change that is

easy to live with. What I love most about this diet is that it's teaching me so much about food and my body. But best of all is that it gets rid of the UGLY FAT—the stuff that doesn't seem to go away no matter what diet your on or how much exercising you do. All you have to do

is what the diet requires. It's so easy because you're not HUNGRY! —Linda B.

This is possible through a new device—ClariVein—the latest technological innovation in the treatment of varicose veins. No bleeding, no bruising and no pain. You can even return to work the same day. It really is as simple as that. How it Works The Clarivein catheter is guided into the vein using an ultrasound. The procedure is virtually pain free and doesn’t require any anaesthetic. The tip of the catheter is then positioned near to the sapheno-femoral junction. The catheter sprays a chemical into the vein, sealing it and preventing the varicose vein from re-appearing. Once the procedure is finished, most patients find that they are able to return to normal activities the same day. You can even drive yourself home! ClariVein is a special motorized catheter with a rotating tip. It uses chemo-mechanical ablation. “Chemo” stands for the liquid that has special chemical properties that destroy the inner lining of the vein. “Mechanical” stands for the rotating tip of the catheter that sprays this liquid onto the inside wall of the vein. It uses the rotation

of the catheter tip together with the sprayed liquid to close and seal a faulty, leaky vein. ClariVein does not use heat and does not cause pain so there is no risk of burning structures close to the vein. In addition, there is no anesthesia required when using ClariVein. This is why most patients find the ClariVein procedure more comfortable and tolerable than all other endovenous techniques. QUESTION: How can a dentist help with my snoring?

S

noring may be common but it is not normal. Snoring can be a red flag for sleep apnea. It is one of the symptoms, along with shortness of breath, that arouses you from sleep, sporadic pauses in your breath during sleep, and disproportionate daytime drowsiness. If you have any of these signs, you need to determine why. Left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes, heart failure, and arrhythmias; as well as increase work-related or driving accidents. I have been practicing orthodontics for adults and youth for 20 years in Monmouth County, currently in Colts Neck at the Colts Neck Center for Orthodontics and Invisalign. My involvement with sleep apnea is a personal one. My incessant snoring was an issue with my wife, so I had a sleep study done and found out that I had severe sleep apnea. I tried the standard CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) mask, only to find it annoying and difficult to sleep with. I tried numerous devices and dental appliances, but they were all uncomfortable and ineffective.

Sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack,

Colts Neck Center for Orthodontics and Invisalign

While working with doctors from Stanford University Medical Center, I was introduced to, and now personally wear, the first dental appliance for snoring, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). It is a perfect alternative for those who cannot tolerate their CPAP therapy. This appliance is FDA approved as a medical device in two separate classifications; (1) as a mandibular repositioner for treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, and (2) as a nasal dilator for improved ease of breathing. Medical insurance will pay for this device. I have brought my many years of dental expertise, personal experience, and research into the Chase Dental Sleep Care of Central New Jersey to assist others in determining the cause of their snoring and the best treatment for it. It has impacted my own life in such a positive way; I hope to share the experience with you. Give us a call and let us help you with your sleep and snoring issues as well as all of your family’s orthodontic needs. My friendly staff and relaxing atmosphere is the perfect place to end your quest for good health and a good night’s sleep. n

QUESTION: My child plays a fall sport. How do I recognize and treat an ankle sprain?

S

chool is coming quickly, like it or not. Before you know it, it's time to start thinking about the fall sports. Even with all of the proper sports and safety equipment, accidents do happen. One very common injury which is often not treated adequately is ankle sprains. An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments in the ankle. Ankle sprains are not the same as strains, which affect muscles rather than ligaments. Ligaments act like rubber bands, connecting one bone to another and binding the joints together. In the ankle joint, ligaments provide stability by limiting side-to-side movement. Depending on the injury, the ligament can be stretched, partially torn, or completely torn. There is also a question on the number of ligaments involved. The symptoms of ankle sprains may include pain or soreness, swelling, bruising, difficulty walking or stiffness in the joint. According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, even if there is no pain or swelling, treatment is crucial because an untreated ankle sprain:

• May lead to chronic ankle instability causing persistent discomfort and a “giving way” of the ankle. • Weakness in the leg may also develop. • A more severe ankle injury such as a fracture may have occurred along with the sprain. • An ankle sprain may be accompanied by a foot injury that causes discomfort but has gone unnoticed thus far. • If rehabilitation is delayed, the injury may be less likely to heal properly. Family Foot & Ankle Center of Central Jersey provides comprehensive care for infants, children, teenagers, adults, and seniors. n October 5th, Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey will host the 21st Annual Race for the Cure at Six Flags Great Adventure. Over 10,000 participants and spectators are expected to attend that includes a run, a walk, and fun run for kids under 10. The highlight of the Race is the Survivor Procession which honors breast cancer survivors. “The event has become a way for survivors, family members, friends, community organizations and corporate teams to come together and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer,” said Executive Director Sally Sheperdson. “It gives people an outlet to honor loved ones in the Art Expression Tent, visit sponsors and grantees in the Partner Pavilion, enjoy a bite to eat, entertain the little ones with games and activities in the Kids Tent and cheer on 600 survivors in the inspiring Survivor Procession.” Participants work throughout the year to raise overall awareness through fundraising, asking for support of their friends and family and recruiting new team members and helping to reach the goal of $1.1 million. In the event’s 21 year history, it has grown to the largest 5K in the state and has raised over $27 million which has funded local programs providing breast cancer education and free screening mammograms as well as national research initiatives to find the cures. In 2014, the Affiliate granted $1 million to 16 hospitals and organizations reaching 23,000 women with breast cancer education and making 8,000 mammograms available to underserved women. Sharing Genes with Friends By Susan Heckler

S

cientists from University of California-San Diego and Yale have found that we are genetically similar to our friends more so than we are to strangers of the same population. Their findings suggest that our social networks also play an important role in human evolution, in addition to our physical and biological environment. In fact, researchers say our friends are as “related”—genetically speaking—as fourth cousins. The claim that friends wear the same genes was the subject of a recent article in Discover magazine. The research focused on 1,932 subjects who participated in a 1948 Framingham Heart Study, which produced one of the largest datasets of both genetic information and details of social relationships. Additionally, they used the data base of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. According to Discover, “A vast majority of people in the Farmingham study had European origins, which ensured both friends and strangers were drawn from the same population.” Nearly 1.5 million markers of gene variations and compared pairs of unrelated friends against pairs of unrelated strangers were analyzed. Friends shared enough genes to develop a ‘friendship score,’ which was used as a predictor of friendships. We share 1% of our genes with our friends, giving researchers the same confidence level of results as predicting obesity. Friends were most similar in genes affecting the sense of smell, and most different when it came to genes that affect immunity against various diseases. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “friends may be a kind of ‘functional kin.’”

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

This leans toward the theory that we tend to befriend people who not only look similar to us but also have certain genetic similarities to us. An interesting fact is that humans are the only species in the animal kingdom that actually have friends, or long term connections. The researchers believe that the findings suggest that choosing friends who share similar genes is a behavior that may have contributed to human evolution. “We live in a sea of genes,” says lead author James Fowler, professor of medical genetics and political science at the University of California-San Diego. “What happens to us may not depend only on our genes but on the genes of our friends.” In a Time Magazine article they state, “The first gene, DRD2, is involved in producing a type of dopamine receptor, and the researchers report that people with a variant linked with increased risk for alcoholism were more likely to be friends with each other. Those with the variant were 10% more likely to be pals than would be expected by chance. Since most of the participants in the adolescent database were just 14 at the time they were studied, it’s not likely that, for example, they met each other in bars, which might otherwise explain the connection. Although DRD2 has been the subject of other conflicting studies on its potential relationship to impulsivity or risk for ADHD, the alcoholism finding has been repeatedly replicated.” Maybe the Beatles were on to something when they wrote, “I get by with a little help from my friends?” n

QUESTION: I think my child sees fine, so why bother with a vision test if there is no problem?

A

child can pass the 20/20 vision test and still have noteworthy vision complications which will hamper them in school, sports and/or social life. With the school year on its way, now would be a great time to have your child’s vision checked. You don’t want months to pass by to only find out that your child has been unable to see the blackboard or read effectively and has the grades to prove it. Children should be examined by an eye doctor during infancy, preschool, and school years to detect potential vision defects. A pediatric visit to the eye doctor is, in part, about the acuity of distance and near vision. It is so much more than that. Your child needs the ability to focus, track or fixate on objects, differentiate colors, discriminate forms and coordinate eye and hand movements. Your annual vision check will look into the above, plus investigate: BINOCULAR VISION Are both eyes working as a team; smoothly, accurately, equally and simultaneously? If not, depth perception is affected as well as visual motor skills. This affects 12% of the population. CONVERGENCE INSUFFICIENCY Convergence Insufficiency is a common near vision problem which interferes with the child’s ability to see, read, learn, and work at close distances. An eye teaming problem in which the eyes have a strong tendency to drift outward or away from the target when reading or doing close work. When the eyes drift, the child might have double vision.

The condition can manifest or worsen in the later school years as near work, homework, and reading demands significantly increase. DYSLEXIA Dyslexia is the selective impairment of reading skills despite normal intelligence, sensory acuity, and instruction. Normal vision and normal hearing are essential parts of normal sensory acuity, so it is critical to rule out any problems with vision or hearing when considering the diagnosis and/or treatment of dyslexia. Visual abnormalities were reported to be found in more than 75% of the reading-disabled children tested. STRABISMUS OR CROSSED EYES Approximately 4% of children in the U.S. are affected by “crossed eye,” “wall eye,” “wandering eye,” strabismus, esotropia, exotropia, or hyperphoria. It is a visual defect in which the two eyes point in different directions. One eye may turn either in, out, up, or down while the other eye aims straight ahead. Due to this condition, both eyes do not always aim simultaneously at the same object. This results in a partial or total loss of stereo vision and binocular depth perception. The eye turns may be visible at all times or may come and go. In some cases, the eye misalignments are not obvious to the untrained observer. I invite you to visit my office for an exam to discuss eye care health for you and your family. We take most medical insurances. QUESTION: Why Is Thermography Considered the Best Breast Test?

S

tudies show that a thermogram identifies precancerous or cancerous cells earlier than mammograms, and produces unambiguous results, which cuts down on additional testing—and it doesn't hurt the body. Thermography's accuracy and reliability is remarkable too according to the American Journal of Surgery and the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Cornell. Thermography can be used as a whole body approach to wellness with the understanding that there is no "normal" asymmetrical heat in the body. Thermal cameras can detect heat on the skin surface that may show underlying pathologies. Heat is an indication that inflammation exists, and typically inflammation is present in precancerous and cancerous cells, too. (It's also present in torn muscles and ligaments as well as arthritic joints, which thermography can also detect.) Breast Thermography is a radiation-free state-of-the-art screening procedure that captures heat images of the breast to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. As a tumor grows it develops a blood supply that emits heat that is detected on a modern infrared device. Thermography can establish overall breast health and is an excellent test for assessing fibrocystic breasts and response to treatment. Thermography also can detect many other ailments such as Systematic Dental Disease.

Some dentists have long claimed a relationship between oral bacteria and breast cancer. With Thermography imaging, we can see how the bacteria spreads through the lymphatic (immune) system. Overall Research The Index Medicus, a comprehensive index of medical scientific journal articles, references more than 800 per-reviewed breast thermography studies, in which over 250,000 women participated. Many of these studies involved very large groups of patients (from 37,000 to over 100,000) and some have followed patients for as much as 12 years. Among other conclusions, these studies found that when thermography has been added to a woman's regular breast health checkups, a 61% increased survival rate was realized, and when used as part of a multi-model approach (clinical examination, mammography and thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected. It is well known that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer and that, if treated in the earliest stages, a 95% cure rate is achieved. The "cure" is early detection. n Don't put it off! Breast Cancer – Making an Informed Choice The Importance of a Second Opinion By Brianna Sciciliano

O

ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to rededicate ourselves to lessening the impact of the most common cancer affecting women. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States, after lung cancer. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women during their lives, and many of us know someone—a mother, sister, friend—who has had it. It is the second-leading cancer killer of women in the United States, next to lung cancer. Thanks to screening, breast cancer often can be found early, when the chance of successful treatment is best. In fact, many women are even cured of the disease. Knowing the treatment types available to you and feeling comfortable with both your choice treatment and choice doctor are extremely helpful to your overall well-being while fighting breast cancer. Even though doctors may get similar medical training, they can have their own opinions and thoughts about how to practice med-

icine. They can have different ideas about how to diagnose and treat conditions or diseases. Some doctors take a more conservative, or traditional approach to treating their patients. Other doctors are more aggressive and use the newest tests and therapies. Many doctors specialize in one area of medicine, such as cardiology or obstetrics or psychiatry. Not every doctor can be skilled in using all the latest technology. Getting a second opinion from a different doctor might give you a fresh perspective and new information. It could provide you with new options for treating your condition. Then you can make more informed choices. If you get similar opinions from two doctors, you can also talk with a third doctor. Tips: What To Do 1. Ask your doctor for a recommendation. Ask for the name of another doctor or specialist, so you can get a second opinion. Continued on page 50

About Teen Acne By Brianna Siciliano

E

veryone struggles with less than perfect skin. In today’s world, we are constantly taking and sharing photos of ourselves with each other. The pressure to have clean and clear skin is always on, and when our skin is not clear, our self-esteem lowers. Pimples can be painful and embarrassing, but clearing up our skin and raising our self-esteem and confidence is possible. It is time to rid pimples from our lives! Studies have shown that the majority of young people, varying from ages 12-18, suffer from acne. In some cases, acne can start very early, between the ages of 8 and 11. The good news is that treatments for acne are available and affordable. Acne can be controlled and cleared up, allowing teens to feel great in their own skin. Before searching for the perfect treatments, it is important to understand how acne is caused. During puberty, hormones are going through big changes and oil production from glands on the face, chest, and back are increasing. Excess oil combines with naturally shedding skin cells, and this combination ends up clogging pores or causing blackheads and whiteheads. The oil can also provide “food” for acne-causing bacteria (which lives on skin’s surfaces). These bacteria multiply inside pores and create red, swollen pimples when the “food” traps them in facial pores. To keep skin healthy, it is important to avoid popping or picking at zits. Popping and picking squishes the materials that are trapped in the pore into skin that surrounds the pimple, which ends up causing more swelling and redness. Instead of irritating the skin, teens need to was their faces in the morning and before bed time with gentle cleansers. It can also be very beneficial for teens to apply a sunscreen (UVA/UVB, SPF 30 or higher) to their faces in the morning, no matter what season of the year it is. Make sure that all the products being used on the skin––whether they are moisturizers, sunscreens, or make-up products––are labeled as oil-free, acne-free, or non-comedogenic. If your teen is looking to get rid of a few whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples, try an over the counter acne wash that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide once a day. If there is no improvement within two months, if the washes are irritating the skin, or if the acne is leaving scars or causing pain, talk to your doctor right away. Keeping skin picture-perfect, and getting rid of pimples, is possible. Do not let pimples hold your teens back! n

ccreditation is a voluntary process undertaken by a school to demonstrate compliance with specific standards intended to indicate a level of educational quality. There are two types of accreditations: Institutional and Programmatic. Institutional accreditation involves a comprehensive review of the entire school and Programmatic accreditation provides eligibility for graduates to sit for various credentialing exams. Thus, when a school in the United States is accredited, it means that it has passed a set of criteria stipulated by an accrediting agency. The U.S. Department of Education maintains a list of accreditation organizations that meet federal standards and a list of schools that have been accredited by those groups on their database www.ed.gov. Two leaders in health education accreditation are www. abhes.org and www.caahep.org. Accredited schools also participate in Federal grants and loans which are available to eligible students. Accreditation is important because it assures the school or program have been evaluated and have met accepted standards established by and with the profession. Graduates employment opportunities are enhanced as it assures prospective employers that the student meets the skills and required. In researching schools, students should strongly consider the benefits of attending an accredited school to further their education and advance their career. n advertisement

Elective Surgery... Do the Pros Outweigh the Cons? By Brianna Siciliano

T

here are many types of elective surgeries—procedures that are not emergencies and can be planned in advanced—including: plastic surgeries (reconstruction and cosmetic procedures), refractive surgeries (laser surgery to correct vision problems), gynecological surgeries (a hysterectomy or a tubal ligation), exploratory or diagnostic surgeries (removes tissue samples for biopsies), cardiovascular surgeries (angioplasty), musculoskeletal surgeries (hip and knee replacements), and elective laparoscopic surgeries (hernia repairs and gallbladder removal procedures). These procedures are all optional, but that does not mean that they are not serious. In 2009, American patients underwent more than one million total hip and knee replacements, ranking these procedures as one of the most common inpatient surgeries in the United States. Many patients had different reasons for their musculoskeletal surgeries; some patients had their surgery so they could maintain a highly active lifestyle, while other patients—some who were disabled by arthritis—had their procedure done so they could live their life without suffering pain while completing daily tasks.

What are the risks of elective surgeries? Most surgeries carry risks for infections, bleeding, shock, and/or blood clotting. What are the pros of elective surgeries? Well, older patients who underwent procedures have improved quality of life. These patients are able to live independently, without the need of assistance in their everyday activities. Younger patients who underwent total joint replacement surgery were able to remain independent and continue to work after recovery. If you are thinking about getting an elective procedure done, ask yourself these questions: Do I want to live in pain for the rest of my life? Would I rather spend the money on myself, so I can feel better and complete daily tasks pain-free, or keep the money and allow myself to struggle while completing tasks like going to the bathroom? What is holding me back from getting this procedure? It is understandable to worry about the costs and risks of surgeries. At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that your health and well-being is much more valuable than the value of a dollar bill. Elective surgeries can make everyday life less painful and more enjoyable. Do the pros of these procedures outweigh the cons? We think so! n

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

By Susan Heckler

I

have one and I bet you do too. I’m talking about a person close to you who has that personality or talent to bring out the very best in people. Financial success has nothing to do with this; it is embracing certain qualities in a person’s character that makes them reach for the best in all of us and the most meaningful life for his or her own life. It is common knowledge that we are judged by the company we keep. Help your present company rise to the level you would like; show them a better way. If you would like to be a person to admire and hope to inspire others, here are some quick tips to get started. One way to inspire people is to set an example. Show people yourself at your best and that you constantly strive to maintain being someone you are proud of. Let people know you see the potential in them and encourage them to find it. This translates to any relationship. If a child knows you will settle for a C average in school, not many would struggle to get higher. If they know you expect them to reach their potential, it is challenging them and cheering them on to greater success. The key is to stress their individual potential and not compare them to the potential of others. You want to gently encourage and not discourage. People can gage authenticity. If you do not genuinely care about the person it will show through your words and body language. Disingenuous behavior is counterproductive. Your actions need to match your words and the truth will show in your eyes. Faith is a wonderful quality. Faith in religion, faith in the future, and faith in those around you should be shared as it is an inspiration to all. Having faith allows you to reach past your comfort zone, try new things and inspire others to do the same as you have faith in them and show them to have faith in their own abilities. Another way to inspire people is to share your convictions and stand by them. Speak of who inspires you and why. Sharing your beliefs and convictions is a sign of trust and standing by them shows loyalty, even if it is only to an idea. It is okay to show your vulnerability, it makes you approachable and human. Perfection is generally too good to be true and can cause suspicion; trying to find the cracks. Be truthful and honest. Aim for the less hurtful ways to be truthful, you can get your point across gently. This speaks to your personal integrity when the people around you know they can count on your honesty. Inspiring people is not just about speaking to them about your convictions; it is also listening to them. When you listen to someone else, you are showing them that you value their worth. Giving recognition goes a long way toward positive self-esteem. Be someone you are proud of and the rest will fall into place. n

QUESTION: What gives the best results for skin tightening?

A

s we age we lose volume, primarily fat. It is noticeable in our face but also elsewhere in our body. Add gravity to the loose skin and it creates droopiness, wrinkles and bands. Many people opt for liposuction or plastic surgery because the underlying muscles need to be addressed and repositioned. There are less invasive ways to target the areas of your body which you would like to improve. Some are more effective for some parts of the body than others. Ultherapy is the only non-invasive procedure FDAcleared to lift skin on the neck, under the chin and on the eyebrow and décolletage. It uses ultrasound to transform the deep layers of skin tissue without disturbing the surface of the skin. It is also the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows us to actually see the layers of tissue we target during treatment and ensure the energy is deposited precisely to where it will be most effective.

Skin Tightening with ThermiTight is a novel, minimally invasive procedure for impressive tightening of the neck, jowl, knees, upper arms and abdomen. This treatment is for people who are at their ideal weight, but may have a small pocket of stubborn sagging skin. ThermiTight uses radio frequency technology just below the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen for tightening and smoothing. The procedure requires only local anesthesia and poses little to no downtime. The treatment itself typically takes less than one hour, and poses minimal post-treatment redness and swelling—many patients resume their normal activities right away! Your answer to which treatment or combination of treatments giving you the best results would need to come from a qualified professional after an examination of your individual concerns. Let Drs. Michael and Estela LaCap give you their opinion prior to undergoing expensive and invasive plastic surgery. n

Beautiful, Elegant, and Easy Braided Up-Dos By Brianna Siciliano

T

his year, braided hairstyles are the number one hairstyle trend. Braids are fun, easy, and stylish and can look good on anyone. There are tons of different braided styles available to try out; some braids look best with long hair, while others look best with short hair. The best part about styling your hair this way? Braided hairstyles are temporary! You do not have to commit to these hairstyles for long periods of time, unless you absolutely love them! The downward milkmaid, a look that is achieved by loosely French-braiding two pigtails and crossing them across each other at the neckline, is an elegant hairstyle that can be worn with almost any clothing attire, whether you are wearing this for work or for a ladies night out. The braids that are crossing each other at the neckline can be held in place with bobby pins. The inverted braid is an up-do that has adds a cool twist on a normal French-braid. To achieve this look, braid three sections of hair under one other instead of over. By doing this, you are making a beautiful, exposed braid. A braided style that is a simple and stylish way to keep your hair out of your face is the fishtail. When you are starting to form a fishtail braid, you start by splitting your hair down the middle into two sections. Take a tiny piece from the outside of the right section and cross it to the inside of the left (so, in other words, you are bringing the strand of hair over the right section and under the left section). Next, take a tiny section from the outside of the left and join the strand of hair with the inside of the right (bring the strand of hair over the left section and under the right section). Continue this process until you see the fishtail braid emerge. Tie the bottom of the braid together and enjoy this beautiful look. With all of these up-do options available, there is no need to wear the same, boring hairstyle to every occasion. Change things up a bit and try out a braided up-do! n

Are you bored with wearing your hair up in the back? Try wearing a beautiful fishtail braid up-do to the side!

New Hair Hues for Fall By Brianna Siciliano

F

all is known as the season of change. When we think about the word ‘fall,’ we think about leaves transforming into beautiful new colors. Well, if leaves can change and become exciting, why can’t we add some excitement to our lives? Why not make a change to our hair? In recent months, ombré hair colors have grabbed the world’s attention. Ombré hair gives us the power to style our hair in different shades rather than just one, therefore adding excitement to our daily lives. Another extremely popular color this season is brown-blonde, which is also called “bronde” because it’s a mix between brunette and blonde. Popular hair color trends for brunettes this season are chestnut brown and choco caramel (chocolate brown and caramel). Chestnut brown is an exemplary combination of cool and warm brown tones, which can range from darker to lighter shades. We can add extra dimensions to our chestnut brown hair by adding toasted walnut highlights between the mids and ends of the hair.

To perfect choco caramel, we will need to turn to either ombré or baylayage techniques. By pairing rich chocolate brown with caramel or butterscotch highlights, hair will result in creamygold tones that add both shine and dimension. If you prefer your hair to be lighter, on the other hand, try out a golden apricot or a platinum blonde look. To create a flawless golden apricot

Your hair will be one of the most coveted looks of the season. Do you prefer lighter hues? Try out the platinum-blonde hair color. Platinum is very elegant and attractive on women with short hair and pale skin. What is holding you back from trying out a new hair hue? n

Who Says Cardio Can't Be Fun? By Brianna Siciliano

W

orking out does not have to be a dreadful chore. After all, cardiovascular exercise is necessary for good health. If cardio was a fun activity, then we would find ourselves working out more often. To add enjoyment to workouts, try setting up your own music playlist to listen to while working out. Hearing the sounds of heavy breathing and stomping feet makes it challenging to complete workouts. On the other hand, listening to upbeat songs and adjusting your speed to the music's tempo can distract your mind and body, therefore causing you to concentrate on the music and not the burn. Aside from planning out what music to listen to, it is important to plan out what cardio exercises you will complete. All cardio workouts have the same objective: to bring up your heart rate and burn calories. There is no reason to be miserable while working out. If you do not enjoy running or riding the exercise bike, then avoid those exercises. Instead, find an activity you enjoy, whether it is dancing, playing basketball with friends, or kickboxing. Choose a cardiovascular activity that you will enjoy completing, and you won't realize that you are exercising. It is important to keep variety in workouts so you cannot get bored. Try making a cardio schedule for yourself. On Monday, ride a bike around your community for thirty-minutes. On Tuesday, jog around the closest park. On Wednesday, take a Zumba class with friends at a local gym. On Thursday, take a kickboxing class. When cardio is exciting, it is hard to stop moving. Another way to make cardio fun is to reward yourself. Activities are more fun when you have something to work for. Try gifting yourself a new outfit or pair of shoes once your workout is complete. With imagination and preparation, cardio workouts can be pleasurable and exciting. n

Bye Bye Arm Jiggle Tone-up Your Arms with These Four Exercises By Brianna Siciliano

T

he warm weather may be getting ready to hibernate, but that does not mean that our arms need to hibernate, too. There is always time to tone-up and show off our strong, lean arms. So, how can you make your arms lean, mean, fighting machines? By exercising! One of the best arm workouts is arm circles. To do the exercise properly, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and extend your arms straight out to your sides at shoulder height. While making sure your shoulders do not rise, make 20 backward circles with your arms. Then, switch directions and make 20 forward circles. It is important to not get lazy and make the tiniest circles possible; challenge yourself and make circles as big as you can. Are your arms shaking? Do you feel the burn? If so, that means the exercise is working! A great shoulder workout is a shoulder press (you will need dumbbell weights for this workout). To begin, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell weight in each hand. Bend your elbows and bring your hands to your shoulders while your palms face forward. Press the weights straight over your head, while keeping your shoulders down. Then, lower the weights back to your shoulders. Repeat this exercise anywhere from 12, 15, or 20 times. If you use lighter dumbbells, repeat the exercise more often. An amazing bicep workout, which also requires the use of dumbbell weights, is bicep curls. To start, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, your toes facing forward, and your knees slightly bent. Place a three, five, or eight pound weight in each hand with your palms

facing forward. While slowly exhaling, curl the dumbbells towards your chest. Inhale and lower the dumbbells three quarters of the way down. Like the shoulder press, repeat this exShoulder presses are great to to tone ercise anywhere from 12, 15, or shoulders. If you need to use lighter 20 times. weights, complete more repetitions; Want to have toned triceps? if you can use heavier weights, you can complete less repetitions. Either Complete an exercise called the way, it’s a win-win for your arms and ‘Triceps Overhead Extension,’ shoulders! which can be completed with one dumbbell in a seated or standing stance. To begin this exercise, have your arms straight up with your elbows next to your ears. Hold onto the top of your dumbbell with both of your hands and bend your elbows to a 90-degree angle, while making sure your arms are still touching your ears. Squeeze your triceps to straighten your arms, pressing the dumbbell up as high as your hands will take the dumbbell weight. Then slowly lower your hands to the start position. Repeat this exercise, once again, anywhere from 12, 15, or 20 times. After a few days of completing these arm workouts, your arms will be stronger and leaner. Imagine how strong your arms will be if you continue to challenge yourself and make these workouts more intense! n

Falling for Fitness

By Susan Heckler

S

ummer may be officially over, but don’t miss out on one of the best times of year for outdoor fitness. FALL! For many of Mother Nature’s creatures, autumn is the time to stock up on the available food and get ready for winter. Squirrels look cute with food stuffed into their cheeks and a few extra pounds…not so with us humans. The cooler weather is very conducive to outdoor exercise. Less heat and humidity makes for a very pleasant workout. Fall foliage makes for amazing biking, hiking and walking. If you are not into a workout routine, even just doing yard work such as raking leaves is better than doing nothing. Get your heart pumping and breathe in some fresh crisp air. The Monmouth County Park System has some amazing trail and some guided classes you can sign up for. Check out these beauties right in your own back yard. • Assunpink Wildlife Management Area Clarksburg-Robbinsville Road, Robbinsville • Cheesequake State Park 300 Gordon Road, Matawan • Clayton Park Emley’s Hill Road, Upper Freehold • Historic Allaire Village 4265 Atlantic Ave., Wall • Manasquan Reservoir 311 Windeler Road, Howell • Union Transportation Trail (UTT) Cream Ridge It makes no difference if you bring friends, family, or just your own thoughts. Strolling through beautiful trails is great for your body, mind and mood. Before you know it, winter will be upon us. Enjoy the great outdoors while you can still see the grass and not see your own breath. n

Let Your Weekend End Your Week By Susan Heckler

D

o you ever measure what you manage to accomplish each day? Are you impressed or incredibly stressed? For most people, Monday through Friday is a tight schedule, cramming in the obligations at work with your responsibilities at home. Between your killer commute, long hours at the office, managing your home, shopping for the basics, caring for your kids, volunteer work for the schools or religious organizations, and managing the children’s after-school activities… You barely got all of the fires under control so you can get a breather for the weekend. Weekends get slotted in for home-based projects. Clean-ups, cleanouts, projects for you or your kids… It never ends. Your children’s after school activities spill into your weekend, especially if they are on sports teams. Your mind never stops and the body is in perpetual motion. All of this is a drain on your energy and takes a toll on your body. There are certain shortcuts we can all take which will free up some time and let us transfer our energy to where it is needed most. • Prep work your prep work—spend a little time throughout the week doing maintenance to avoid a bigger job on the weekend. Maybe throw a load of laundry in here and there so you don’t have a massive pile up on Saturday. Sort the mail in as it comes so you don’t have to sort it before doing the bills. Clean the kitchen after each meal to avoid a major cleanup. • Enlist the list—have everyone in your family pitch in to their ability. • Make a plan and stick to it—plan some leisure or social time and allow yourself a reward. • Delegate outside the box—find things outside of your family that

may save you time and sanity such as drop and fold laundry services, dry cleaning delivery, restaurants that deliver, websites with free delivery instead of going to get it yourself, and pet groomers. • Keep it real—make your expectations realistic or there is no way you will get it all done. • Quality counts—when it comes to your children it isn’t just the quantity of time spent together, it is the quality that they crave. • Whether there is weather—plan outdoor chores for the beautiful weather and do the indoor projects on the less desirable days. • Minimize the mind games—If you don’t need to be in touch with work on the weekends, minimize your stress and avoid contact. Try to stay in Me Mode. • Picky is good—turn down invitations except the ones you really want or can’t avoid. • Reboot—plan activities that will invigorate you. You should have time to relax, rejuvenate and be able to start your work week in a better place. • Combine forces—make use of friends and family; carpool and babysit for each other to free up everyone’s load. • Centralize your errands—find a place that has everything in one place instead of running from town to town. • Max out your Sunday—this is the last day of your weekend and should leave you relaxed, refreshed and happy. Plan your Sunday evening to do all of this for you. Life is good, now it is your job to keep it that way. n

Find Happiness by Getting Rid of Dramatic Relationships By Brianna Siciliano

D

ramatic relationships are anything but healthy. Every kind of relationship—including family relationships, casual relationships, romantic relationships, and friendships—has minor drama, but when the drama heightens and becomes harmful, action must be taken. No person has the right to make you feel terrible about yourself. No person has the right to make you feel trapped or depressed. It is important to remember that it is possible to free yourself from the stress, anxiety, and pain that dramatic relationships have brought. So, how can you escape a dramatic relationship? By taking action. If your relationship with someone you truly care for is harmful for your health, try confronting them. Loved ones often feel comfortable enough to say anything that is on their mind, and sometimes, their words can be very hurtful. Did your best friend make a negative comment about your new haircut? Talk to her about the comment and let her know how it made you feel. Unfortunately, some relationships are not worth saving. If that is the case, appropriate action must be taken. The first step towards freedom from a dramatic relationship is thinking about what is keeping you and your loved one connected.

Why are you still with this person? Is it because this person has been in your life for a long time? Has the person been with you through major milestones? In these cases, separation seems impossible. It is important to remember that over time, the relationship has become harmful. Would you like to live the rest of your life with major stress, anxiety, and emotional pain while remaining connected to this person? Or would you rather find happiness and independence without this person in your life? The hardest part about ending a relationship is realizing that things will not get better. We often give people we care about second chances. Over time, people are given hundreds of second chances. If you have gone through the same cycle, over and over again, than it is time to give yourself a reality check. The conflicts that are causing harm are not being resolved. It is time to move on. Always remember that life is too short to live miserably. Do not be afraid to improve, get rid of, or create new relationships. You deserve to live a long, healthy, and happy life. Drama is not needed. n

veryone follows different paths in life. At certain times, people deal with painful events and losses. Sometimes, losing someone––or something––that you deeply love and care for makes life seem impossible. It may feel like the pain, anger, and sadness you are feeling will never go away, which is a normal reaction to a significant loss. It is important to remember during these tough times that while there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain. In order for that to happen, though, we must understand what grief truly is. By definition, grief is the emotional suffering you feel when something––or someone––you love is taken away. The more significant the loss is, the harsher the grief will be. Grief can be associated with the death of a loved one, a miscarriage, retirement, a breakup, an illness, or a serious loss.

Learn More About You By Brianna Siciliano

T

he definition of being self-aware is understanding your habits, behaviors, motivations, thought processes, emotional reactions, and personality. People who have great self-knowledge understand what their strengths, weaknesses, fears, passions, likes, dislikes, thoughts, feelings, core beliefs, talents, and desires are. Developing self-awareness is an important skill to acquire. Imagine how confident you will feel once you finally know who you are, what you want to accomplish, and why certain actions are necessary. There is power in knowledge, and as you become more knowledgable about yourself, you will find yourself becoming more powerful and successful. So, what do you need to do to learn more about yourself? Ask yourself questions! What types of people do you enjoy spending time with? Why do you enjoy their company? What traits do these types of people have that you enjoy the most? Do you love their intelligence? Curiosity? Open-minds? Senses of humor? Once you discover what you value the most about their presence, dig deeper and discover why their company is so valuable. Do you love having smart friends because of the topics you discuss? Do you love learning new things from your curious friends? Do you love to laugh at your company’s sense of humor? The further you dig, the more insight you will find. When you are self-aware, you are able to build stronger relationships with your family and friends. “As you become more clear about who you really are, you’ll be better able to decide what is best for you the first time around” (Oprah Winfrey). n

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

There are different ways to grieve; how a person grieves depends on many factors, including their life experience, faith, coping style, personality, and the nature of their loss. An important thing to keep in mind is that healing from painful events and losses happens gradually over time. There is not a ‘normal’ period for grieving. There are five main stages of grief, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages are all natural reactions to losses. However, not every grieving person goes through every one of these stages, and that is fine! You do not have to go through every, or even any, stage to heal. Do not worry about how you ‘should’ feel, or what stage you are ‘supposed to be in’ during your grieving process. Instead, try to find support of other people. Sharing the burden of your loss makes your grief a lot easier to carry. There is no wrong support system to turn to; you can look for support from friends and family, a support group, a professional therapist, a grief counselor, or your faith. If time passes, and your sadness does not become less intense as you accept your loss, it may be a sign that your grief has developed in a more serious problem. If this happens, reach out to a mental health professional right away. n

Six Healthy Harvest Foods to Add to Your Diet By Brianna Siciliano

T

he temperature outside may be going down, but your produce choices are just beginning to rise. Lots of healthy and tasty foods, that can be found in local farmers markets and supermarkets, harvest during the fall, giving us the perfect excuse to get cooking on the upcoming autumn nights. Sweet potatoes, parsnips, pears, pumpkin, pomegranates, and apples are six of the best, harvested autumn foods.

4. What would fall be without pumpkins? Considered a low-calorie food, pumpkins are rich in fiber, potassium, and B vitamins like folate, niacin, and thiamin. A normal serving of pumpkin provides about 246 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin A. Maybe you will think twice about turning down that second plate of pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. 5. P omegranates are slightly sour fruits that have received a lot of attention because of their high level of antioxidants. Antioxidants are important because they effectively stabilize and neutralize free radicals (broken down cells that cause damage to healthy cells) before these bad cells are able to cause harm to the human body. Once the harmful cells leave the human body, your cells can be stronger and your body is healthier.

1. Sweet potatoes are one of the tastiest and healthiest root vegetables that harvests during fall. Sweet potatoes are excellent sources of iron and vitamin A—which is important for good vision, a strong immune system, and healthy skin. This vegetable is practically sodium and fat-free, therefore you will not feel bad indulging on this sweet veggie. 2. Parsnips are root vegetables that are best harvested in late fall and early winter. This root vegetable is rich in potassium and adds one of the greatest amounts of dietary fiber to our diets. In a half-cup serving, the root vegetable has four grams of fiber. 3. Do you have a sweet tooth? Well, pears are the perfect fall treat for you. Pears are great sources of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. A medium-sized pear contains about 190 milligrams of potassium, which is a mineral necessary for a healthy heart, nerves, and muscles.

Fall is a beautiful season for harvested foods. Make sure you stop by your local farmers market and see what healthy fruits and vegetables local soil has to offer!

6. Apples are one of the most popular fruits on the market. This delicious fruit is packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber. The most important thing to remember about apples is to leave the skin on. The skin, and the layer directly below it, contains the most healthy fiber and nutrients that an apple provides. These six must-try fruits and vegetables have amazing health benefits that we must take advantage of while they are in harvest. n

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

s we get older, we often find ourselves asking, ‘What’s next?’ What is something that we would love to do, but we have not completed yet? How can we make the rest of our days worthwhile? There are endless possibilities of activities in the world for us to complete! One way to live a fulfilled life is to give back to the community by volunteering. There are many ways to volunteer; you can mentor children, help a business with one of their projects, assist at a library or hospital, or help an animal shelter. Volunteer work takes plenty of time, and once the task is complete, volunteers feel accomplished and proud. Another great way to make the most of your days is to give a physical activity a chance. There are plenty of sports in the world for us to try out and there is bound to be an activity that you will love. Do you love the water? Go fishing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, or surfing! Do you love nature? Make plans to hike every nature trail within a two hour radius of your home. Do you have family or friends that you cherish and want to spend more time with? Are your grandchildren growing up right before your eyes? Try setting aside more time to be with loved ones. Make plans to get together as often as you can. Spending a lunch, or a dinner, with loved ones can help you reconnect and find happiness. The beauty of aging is that as the days go on, we begin to realize what is truly important. The minor scratch on your hardwood floor is not something to get all worked up about; instead, focus your energy on your grandchildren, your children, your spouse, your pets, your favorite sports, your hobbies, or your volunteer work. Always remember that “God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well.” (Voltaire). n

major retirement wave began in 2011 when the first of the Baby Boomers turned 65. The number of Americans over 65 will more than double, from 34.8 million in 2000 to 70.3 million in 2030. With statistics like that, you would think only Baby Boomers would have hearing loss. Not true! While hearing loss is a normal part of aging, the largest age group with hearing loss are people between 18 and 64—about 19 million people compared to 14 million of retirement age! Today, one if five teens has some form of hearing loss—a rate that is 30% higher than in the 1980s and 1990s! Overall, more than 10 million Americans are experiencing hearing loss due to irreversible damage to their hearing from noise.

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

Regardless of your age, be passionate about your hearing health! You are never too young (or old) to get a hearing screening. Hearing loss is an inevitable part of aging, but approximately 95% of people with hearing loss can be helped with hearing aids. According to Elizabeth Cook, Total Hearing Care Chief Audiologist, “Only about 15 percent of general practitioners routinely screen for hearing loss during a physical exam. Total Hearing Care offers free hearing screenings at all of our clinics, and we encourage people to make annual hearing screenings part of their overall health care.” She recommends that people schedule their free annual hearing screening while making their annual physical appointment. Digital technology has made hearing devices nearly invisible. Some even use Bluetooth technology to turn your hearing aids into a wireless headset so you can more easily hear your TV, listen to music, and even take phone calls directly through your hearing device! Whether you are part of the older generation now, will be in the not too distant future, or know of a younger person who may need help with their hearing, plan on having a hearing screening as part of your overall health care. Taking control of your hearing means taking control of your life. Total Hearing Care has 36 locations in New Jersey, Delaware and New York. AS WE AGE

Common Health Concerns for Seniors By Brianna Siciliano

P

eople live much longer now than they did hundreds of years ago. Once you make it to the age of 65, data suggests that most people can live another 19.2 years on average. The healthier you are, the more likely you are to live longer. For many seniors, this means being physically active, eating healthy diet, and making healthy lifestyle choices like losing weight and quitting smoking. About forty-million people nationwide suffer from arthritis pain and complications daily. By definition, arthritis is a joint disorder that causes inflammation and joint pain. There are over 100 types of arthritis, and unfortunately, most of these types do not have cures. However, there are many options for treating arthritis, which include applying either heat or cold (or both) to their joints, applying over-the-counter creams on joints, taking medication, taking supplements, and exercising. To prevent more serious damage to the hurting joints, talk to your doctor to find out the best way to lessen the pain and stiffness. One of the leading killers of adults over 65 is heart disease. People who are living with risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, increase their chances of having a stroke or developing heart disease. If you want to lower your risks of heart disease, many doctors suggest having a healthy diet (drink lots of water and green tea and try to eat more organic foods) and manag-

ing your stress (by participating in therapies like yoga or meditation). Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans. It is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, causing frail bones and increasing risks of fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. To treat and prevent osteoporosis, try focusing on proper diets and nutrition. It is also important to try to prevent any falls that may cause fractures in your bones. You can also prevent and treat this disease by taking calcium, vitamin D, quitting smoking, avoiding medications that cause bone loss, exercising, and taking preventive medications that doctors can prescribe. Cancer strikes people at every age, but as we get older, we are more likely to get cancer. The good news is that cancer survival rates are better today than they ever were before. Medical experts think that about two-thirds of all cancers may be linked to things we can control. Risks of cancer can be lowered by avoiding tobacco products, avoiding sunburn, eating right, staying active, keeping weight down, and controlling your alcohol intake (do not have more than one or two drinks a day). Overall, it is important to make healthy decisions for your body everyday, live a healthy lifestyle, and check-up with your doctor if you think something may be negatively affecting you. Live your life to the fullest and do your best to remain healthy! n

Baked Apple Pie Chips

Breast Cancer Continued from page 23

Don’t worry about hurting your doctor’s feelings. Most doctors welcome a second opinion, especially when surgery or long-term treatment is involved. 2. Ask someone you trust for a recommendation. If you don’t feel comfortable asking your doctor for a referral, then call another doctor you trust. You can also call university teaching hospitals and medical societies in your area for the names of doctors. Some of this information is also available on the Internet.

Savor the season and skip the store-bought chips and crackers with these healthy and sweet apple crisps. Serves 4 Ingredients 4 Golden Delicious apples 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Directions Preheat the oven to 250ºF. Place a cooling rack on top of a large baking sheet. (If you do not have a cooling rack that will fit, you can bake the chips directly on a parchment-lined baking sheet, but they will take a bit longer to become crisp.) Slice the apples as thinly as possible, using a mandolin or sharp knife. Arrange the apple slices on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer, with none of the slices overlapping. In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the top of the apple slices. Bake until the apples turn golden brown, about one hour. Remove the apple slices from the oven and flip them over. Return the pan to the oven and reduce the heat to 200 degrees F. Continue baking until the apple slices shrivel and turn golden brown on the other side, about one hour more. Remove the pan from the oven and allow the apples to cool at room temperature. (They will not be crisp as soon as they come out of the oven, but will crisp up as they cool.) n

ASK THE DOCTOR FALL 2014

3. Check with your health insurance provider. Call your insurance company before you get a second opinion. Ask if they will pay for this office visit. Many health insurance providers do. Ask if there are any special procedures you or your primary care doctor needs to follow. 4. Ask to have medical records sent to the second doctor. Ask your primary care doctor to send your medical records to the new doctor. You need to give written permission to your current doctor to send any records or test results to a new doctor. You can also ask for a copy of your own medical records for your files. Your new doctor can then examine these records before your office visit. 5. Learn as much as you can. Ask your doctor for information you can read. Go to a local library. Search the Internet. Find a teaching hospital or university that has medical libraries open to the public. The information you find can be hard to understand, or just confusing. Make a list of your questions, and bring it with you when you see your new doctor. 6. Do not rely on the Internet or a telephone conversation. When you get a second opinion, you need to be seen by a doctor. That doctor will perform a physical examination and perhaps other tests. The doctor will also thoroughly review your medical records, ask you questions, and address your concerns. In addition to increased access to screening and care, there have been dramatic improvements in breast cancer treatment, with many women and men living long and productive lives well after their treatment has ended. Through ongoing research, we will be able to save more lives and improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer. During Breast Cancer Awareness month, let’s take the time to appreciate the progress we’ve made against this disease and work even harder to help all those affected by it. n

Fertility Testing Is It Right For Me?

Y

ou’ve been thinking of starting a family for some time now. But now you’ve noticed that it just isn’t happening as quickly as you thought it would. So you’re wondering… When should I think about seeing someone? There are many factors that would suggest a trip to a fertility specialist would be a good idea. You should consider your partner’s age, whether you are generally healthy, the method of birth control you’ve been using up until the point you decided to try to become pregnant, and you and your partners family medical history, etc.

Early Testing Could Be the Key Made popular by celebrities such as Jennifer Anison, Kim Kardashian and Janet Jackson. Many women are now opting to visit a fertility specialist even if they are relatively young and healthy. Reasons for early testing are varied, but possibilities may include pre-existing conditions in one of the partners, a family history of health issues, or simply because a woman may want to pursue a career before starting a family.

Over or Under Thirty – Rules to Remember If you are over the age of thirty and have been trying to conceive for more than six months, American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) suggests that you make an appointment to see a fertility specialist right away. The earlier would be the better in fact.

Which Medical Conditions Could Block Pregnancy Certain conditions such as endometriosis, ectopic pregnancies, blocked fallopian tubes, miscarriages, uterine fibroids or polyps, polycystic ovarian syndrome, pain during intercourse, or irregular menstrual cycles may affect your chances at successful conception on your own. If you have a history of any of these conditions and plan to start a family, you should see a fertility specialist as early as possible. The bottom line is, if you are even wondering whether you should see a fertility expert or not, you should book a consultation.

Fertility Testing in 3 Simple Steps 1. Bloodwork Purpose: To test hormone levels and determine whether ovulation is occurring. Procedure: Blood is drawn to test the female hormones associated with egg maturation and uterine receptivity to receive an embryo.

2. Ultrasound Purpose: to determine whether the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes are normal. Procedure: an intravaginal sonogram is performed where the doctor looks for follicles (eggs are inside these) on the ovaries and abnormalities in the lining of the uterus or fallopian tubes.

3. Semen Analysis Purpose: to determine the “quality” of sperm, including number of sperm and motility. Procedure: a sample is produced then examined and compared against specific criteria.
