Question: Is my smart phone hurting me?

I

n today’s busy world, the smart phone is king. People wait in line for weeks just to have the newest and latest iPhone. We barely use our phones to talk anymore. The average 10-24 year old send over 2000 texts per month and receives over 1800. With the popularity of social media apps like facebook, Instagram, and twitter growing by the days, our use of smart phones is only going to increase and so will our aches and pains. Sitting down looking at your phone puts you in an unfavorable posture that exerts an excess amount of stress on your neck and back causing headaches neck pain and back pain. It creates muscle imbalances that ruin our postures and set us up for the consequences of spinal degeneration in the near future. Constantly using our thumbs to type

increases our likelihood of developing tendonitis or “text thumb.” What should I do? • Try holding your phone up higher to reduce strain on your neck instead of looking down all the time. • Most smartphones can now text for you by speaking into them. • Limit the amount of time you spend on your phone and spend it building relationships with the people around you. What is PRP – The Vampire Facial?

P

RP is a natural product created from your own body.A small amount of blood will be drawn from you and placed in a sterile tube. It is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the different components of blood products. Red and white blood cells are divided from the platelets and the plasma. This plasma now contains a higher than normal number of platelets and is called platelet rich plasma or PRP. While the PRP is being prepared, your skin will be cleansed and prepared for the treatment.

How does PRP rejuvenate skin? Platelets are cells in the body that help to heal tissue and grow new skin. PRP is injected into the skin or used as a layer of topical application with micro-needling procedure. Micro-needling is a technique used to deliver micro-injuries to the skin using tiny needles delivered by a high speed automated tip. This micro-injury results in the production of new collagen and elastin. With the formation of microscopic channels, it allows products like PRP to penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin. PRP is also used as an injection to rejuvenate and regenerate new skin. When injected into specific areas, it acts as a matrix and promotes your own collagen to grow and regenerate tissue. It acts naturally to smooth and tighten skin.

et’s talk about the brain…Caring Heart & Brain Imaging is the first imaging center in New Jersey to be able to detect plaque in the brain, the precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. The AMYVID Pet Scan is the new “weapon” on the market to combat this heartbreaking disease. The AMYVID PET SCAN may enable earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by identifying beta-amyloid plaque in brain tissue. This means that the disease can be diagnosed several years before symptoms actually appear. An individual can receive groundbreaking treatments before Alzheimer’s disease develops to advanced stages. Just as important, the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease may be eliminated for patients thought to have Alzheimer’s disease and appropriate treatment decisions can be made based on the patient’s actual form of dementia.

Alan Martinez, M.D.

Question: Could I have PCOS?

P

olycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive endocrine disorder in women, affecting approximately 4-12% of reproductive age women. It is found in both normal weight and overweight/obese women. There is some evidence of a genetic predisposition to developing PCOS, as first-degree relatives of PCOS women are at a significant risk. PCOS is thought to be caused by alterations in ovarian hormone production which creates an increase in male hormones. These hormones disrupt the feedback system to the brain and also result in insulin resistance. The menstrual cycle of a woman with PCOS is often anovulatory, meaning an egg is not released each month. Therefore, PCOS is a common cause of female infertility. PCOS symptoms include a history of irregular menstruation, varying degrees of male pattern hair growth (hirsutism), and acne. Menstrual changes can range from irregular, infrequent, to even absent menstrual bleeding. As the time between periods increases so does the risk for developing uterine cancer. Therefore, women with irregular cycles should consult their gynecologist so they may be properly evaluated for these potential conditions.

There is also evidence that PCOS is associated with several long-term health risks, including the development of diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is recommended that women with PCOS be screened at regular intervals for these disorders, so that early intervention can be implemented. Women with PCOS can have a difficult time conceiving. Using fertility medications can improve their chances of ovulation and achieving a pregnancy. When abnormal hair growth is the primary concern, oral contraceptives may be effective, while the addition of anti-androgen medications directly inhibit hair growth. In the case of insulin resistance, the use of metformin may be indicated to help restore normal glucose parameters. PCOS can affect many facets of a woman’s health. It is important that patients be educated about the implications of this condition, and that proper evaluation and care is implemented by their provider. n

November Is Diabetes Awareness Month.

How much do you know about diabetes during pregnancy? By Brianna Siciliano

D

iabetes can affect women during their childbearing years. Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose (blood sugar) levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. Having diabetes during pregnancy can impact the health of both the mother and her unborn baby. If a woman has poor control of her diabetes during pregnancy, which means that her blood sugar levels are often above normal, this increases the chances for problems for her baby, such as a baby growing too large, which may lead to complications during delivery. It also can cause serious complications for the woman. Working to keep blood sugar in control (in the normal range) before and during pregnancy can help prevent these problems. We don’t know all the causes of gestational diabetes. Many—but not all—women with gestational diabetes are overweight or obese before getting pregnant. It is important for women with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes to keep their blood sugar in control. Keeping blood sugar in control before and during pregnancy increases the chance of having a healthy baby and reduces the chance for other problems. Work with your doctor to make a plan to keep your blood sugar in control. Following this plan can help you have a healthy pregnancy and baby. It also can help you and your baby stay healthy after birth. n

Dr. David Bertone

QUESTION: My child has a concussion – now what do I do?

T

he incidence of concussion in youth sports continues to rise, and parents are often left with trying to navigate the process on their own. The highest incidence rate occurs in football, boys’ ice hockey, girls’ soccer and boys’ lacrosse but other sports are not immune.

Unfortunately most parents get their initial education about the concussion process in the local emergency room, which is not always the best place to go following a mild head injury. The ER is often loud, bright and hectic, which is overstimulating to the concussed athlete and can make the symptoms of headache, dizziness and irritability even worse. In the far majority of situations after a mild head injury or concussion, quiet rest is the most important treatment. This allows the brain to heal during a vulnerable time. Our internal system that regulates blood flow to the brain gets impaired during a concussion, so when the brain needs increased blood flow to provide healing nutrients, it actually gets less. If the brain is stressed during this healing time with concentration tasks, memory functions, visual and auditory processing and exercise or activity, the healing process gets interrupted, which can delay the recovery process. The key is to get your child to rest to allow them to avoid any stimulating activities. Sleep is good and will improve healing. Post Concussion Treatment Often following a concussion, a supervised Concussion Rehabilitation program is recommended. At db Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Dr. Bertone provides a 5-step comprehensive post-concussion therapy treatment to improve balance and cognitive function, regain postural control and reduce headaches. As progress is made, Dr. Bertone continues a

graduated program with more advanced training; all intended to encourage the safe return to physical activity and sports competition. Baseline concussion testing ConcussionRXCare at db Orthopedic Physical Therapy offers comprehensive baseline concussion testing to determine a pre-injury status of your balance, neurocognitive and oculomotor function. This information is stored and used for comparison purposes in case the athlete sustains a head injury. If you suffer a concussion and return to physical activity before you are fully healed, you are at high risk for the potentially tragic “Second Impact Syndrome.” This is particularly important with athletes who play sports where concussion is a common injury. The only way to determine when it is truly safe to return to physical activity is to test your brain function before you have a concussion. To get the most accurate result, baseline testing must be comprehensive and the results interpreted by an expert in the field. This information is then sent to your physician/pediatrician with a report to help them make the proper return to play decision. If the results are impaired compared to the baseline levels, the athlete is retested until they return to prior levels. Organizations that are a part of our ConcussionRXCare program include Red Bank Catholic High School, Riverview Medical Center ER, Freehold Football Club, Marlboro Soccer and Old Bridge Ice Hockey. Call us at 732-747-1262 for more information on how to sign up for this unique and comprehensive program. n

Dr. Brandon Elimanco

QUESTION: Why does my jaw ache in the morning?

Sometimes it makes a popping sound when I open and close my mouth.

Y

ou may be grinding your teeth in your sleep. This can be caused by stress, although it can also be caused by sleep disorders or mechanical issues with your teeth such as misalignment. The technical term for this is bruxism. It is not good for your overall dental health. Mild grinding doesn’t generally doesn’t need treatment. If your clenching or grinding is severe, you can be fitted with a mouth guard to wear at night which will protect your teeth and prevent further damage such as jaw disorders, headaches, and damaged teeth, According to the Mayo Clinic, “Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related movement disorder. People who clench or grind their teeth (brux) during sleep are more likely to have other sleep disorders, such as snoring and pauses in breathing (sleep apnea).” In addition to sharing your symptoms with your dentist, it is a good idea to let your general medical practitioner know too.

Get Rid of Stress for the Holidays By Brianna Siciliano

W

inter is one of the most stressful times of the year; no matter which direction you look, you will see holiday decorations, tasty treats, amazing sales, and huge crowds. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed during the most wonderful time of the year, but thankfully, there are ways to get rid of stress during this season. Holiday stress can be caused by many things, therefore it is vital to ask yourself what makes you feel nervous, anxious, and stressed around the holiday season. Is it the unhappy memories from childhood? Is this the first holiday season since you began a new chapter in your life? Do the holidays make you feel out of control? Well, whatever the case may be, it is important to acknowledge the fact that the key to getting rid of anxiety and stress that the holiday season brings is taking control over the holidays instead of letting the holidays take control of you. As we get closer and closer to celebrating important days with family and friends, we receive many offers and invitations to var-

ious holiday gatherings. We feel obligated to attend the parties that we have continued to attend in the past, and we feel obligated to bring foods that people expect. We do not want to do any of these things, but we feel like we have to. Well, instead of giving in to these “obligations,” step aside and ask yourself, “Why am I doing these things when they make miserable? What makes me miserable about this situation?” Be conscious about the choices you are making. If you know that going to Aunt Pam’s house with your family is going to bring unneeded anxiety and stress, then don’t attend the gathering! Holiday traditions are supposed to be happy and joyous, not miserable and stressful. Try something new this holiday season, and most importantly, only participate in gatherings and obligations that will be cheerful and stress-free. n

Question: How do you maintain your health and weight with hormonal balance and nutrition? Here’s the best approach to medical weight loss—The HCG Diet Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement for Men & Women

A

Good News

s we get older, our body chemistry changes and we often develop deficiencies in our hormone balance. At first, we develop age-related symptoms, such as lower energy, weight gain, bloating, aches and pain, and mood changes. At our medical practice, we are trained to evaluate normal hormones and optimal hormone balance. Bio-identical hormones are structural, just like human hormones, not synthetic. Numerous research studies have proven that bio-identical replacement by a trained specialist is both safe and predictable. It is well-known that natural estrogen decreases risk of heart disease, and properly balanced with natural progesterone, it does not increase risk of breast cancer. Hormonal imbalances are the genesis for many chronic health problems and, in some cases, increase your risk of serious disease. The symptoms often first appear in women in pre menopause or menopause, when estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone production starts to diminish. Some of the signs of menopause or related hormonal issues in women include: • Weight Gain

• Depression

• Hot Flashes

• Low Libido

• Night Sweats

• Insomnia

• Mood Swings

The good news is that hormone losses and imbalances can be corrected. By using bio-identical hormones, women feel relief from the symptoms, and can effectively protect themselves against osteoporosis and heart disease. With supervised treatment, natural hormone replacement therapy can make women feel healthier and younger than they have in years.

What is the hCG Diet? HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by women during pregnancy. It was developed in the 1950s by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons. He discovered that using hCG in low doses in combination with a low calorie diet resulted in weight loss in pounds and inches.

Facts About the hCG Diet Unlike all other diet programs, hCG addresses the metabolic and hormonal reasons that cause you to gain weight. HCG literally resets your hypothalamus thus allowing your body to maintain your new weight. HCG is a safe and rapid weight loss program with visible results without loss of critical muscle tissue and without hunger.

How Does It Work? The hCG hormone triggers your hypothalamus to break down your abnormal fat cells so you can utilize the stored fat that has now been released as additional energy. Most patients do not feel hungry while on this diet. The hCG diet addresses your metabolism and you will be more likely to successfully lose weight and keep it off. Knee Pain Dr. Scot Paris

QUESTION: What’s the best way to treat knee arthritis? Consider a non-surgical treatment that really works!

O

steoarthritis of the knee is the #1 leading cause of disability in the U.S. Over 27 million people suffer with knee arthritis and that number continues to grow. With knee arthritis, the cartilage breaks down and wears away, leaving the bones to rub together causing pain swelling stiffness and limited range of motion. As the cartilage breaks down, the knee loses its lubricating fluid. We found that by replacing this lubricating fluid with a natural substance called Hyalgan, the lubrication is restored and many patients experience amazing pain relief.

What is Hyalgan and how does it work? Hyalgan is a natural lubricating fluid that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber inside the knee joint. The substance in Hyalgan is hyularonic acid which is normally found in high levels in healthy joints. Replacing the hyularonic acid with Hyalgan lubricates the joint and reduces pain. Hyalgan has been administered over 40 million times and has been proven to provide long-lasting relief of knee pain from osteoarthritis. What if you already tried knee injections? If you have had injections like this in the past and experienced poor results, there is still hope! Many doctors in this area offer similar injections, but very few use precision fluoroscopy guidance. Fluoroscopy guidance ensures that the pain relieving Hyalgan reaches the knee capsule where it bonds with the joint fluid to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. Without fluoroscopy, it is estimated that doctors “miss” the capsule over 30% of the time resulting in poor results. We want each and every one of our patients to have the greatest chance of success, so every injection is done with precision fluoroscopy guidance to ensure that the Hyalgan gets into the capsule 100% of the time. Because of this, patients who previously felt little to no relief with non-flouroscopy guided injection are now getting excellent results. The other “big difference” in our results is the multitude of other supportive care options that we have available to enhance the effectiveness of the Hyalgan procedure. These options include state of the art medical laser treatment, physical therapy, manipulation, corrective osteoarthritis bracing (takes pressure off the damaged section of the knee), and natural anti-inflammatory products. The combination of these treatments offers you what we feel is the most comprehensive non-surgical knee treatment program available. Does it hurt? Many of our patients report that they feel little to no pain at all! We do everything possible to minimize any pain from the procedure, from

pain relieving spray and a local anesthetic, to precision guidance that ensures we are always in the right spot. Will my insurance cover Hyalgan? This procedure is covered by most major insurance companies including Medicare. Our insurance department pre-verifies every patient. Who will be performing the Hyalgan procedure? Dr. Scot Paris is the medical physician who performs the Hyalgan injection. Dr. Paris is trained as a general surgeon and has extensive experience with a variety of surgical procedures. With his conservative approach, he has excelled in the non-surgical treatment of knee pain with the use of fluoroscopy guided Hyalgan injections. So how do I know if your knee pain treatment program will help me? If you are tired of suffering with painful arthritis of the knee, and you want to see if the latest advances in non-surgical treatment can help, all you have to do is call 732-683-1800 to set up a risk free consultation. During the consultation all of your questions will be answered in a warm and friendly environment. Knee replacement surgery is a very extreme measure to take without considering all of your other options first. Once it’s done there is no turning back. For that reason we encourage you to schedule an appointment to see if you are a candidate for Hyalgan treatment. We are proud to offer our patients a comprehensive knee pain treatment program that includes the best non-surgical methods to relieve pain all under one roof. We look forward to having the opportunity to help you feel better. Take the first step in ending your knee pain and call to schedule an appointment today! n

Pharmaceutical compounding. How do compounded medications benefit you?

P

harmaceutical compounding is the art and science of medicine preparation. Compounding is a process of making medications from “scratch” by mixing individual ingredients together in the exact strength and dosage form prescribed by a physician. In old times, nearly all prescriptions were compounded by chemists who were trained and skilled in the arts of formal medicine. As mass drug manufacturing began in 1950s, a “one-size-fits-all” approach was widely adapted in the industry with pharmacists becoming dispensers of pre-manufactured medications. Within the last decade, however, many physicians realized that this approach does not work for all patients, and they are turning more and more to compounded medications as an alternative treatment option. At Marlboro Village Pharmacy, we have the capacity and expertise to prepare custom formulations that meet your needs: Unique Dosage Forms. We compound medications in alternate dosage forms such as capsules, topical gel, cream, spray, sublingual drops and troches, or suppository. Combined Formulations. We combine multiple medications in a single dose formulation. Strength Variations: We customize dosage to patient specific needs.

QUESTION: How can a dentist help with my snoring?

S

noring may be common but it is not normal. Snoring can be a red flag for sleep apnea. It is one of the symptoms, along with shortness of breath, that arouses you from sleep, sporadic pauses in your breath during sleep, and disproportionate daytime drowsiness. If you have any of these signs, you need to determine why. Left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes, heart failure, and arrhythmias; as well as increase work-related or driving accidents. I have been practicing orthodontics for adults and youth for 20 years in Monmouth County, currently in Colts Neck at the Colts Neck Center for Orthodontics and Invisalign. My involvement with sleep apnea is a personal one. My incessant snoring was an issue with my wife, so I had a sleep study done and found out that I had severe sleep apnea. I tried the standard CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) mask, only to find it annoying and difficult to sleep with. I tried numerous devices and dental appliances, but they were all uncomfortable and ineffective.

Sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack,

Colts Neck Center for Orthodontics and Invisalign

While working with doctors from Stanford University Medical Center, I was introduced to, and now personally wear, the first dental appliance for snoring, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). It is a perfect alternative for those who cannot tolerate their CPAP therapy. This appliance is FDA approved as a medical device in two separate classifications; (1) as a mandibular repositioner for treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, and (2) as a nasal dilator for improved ease of breathing. Medical insurance will pay for this device. I have brought my many years of dental expertise, personal experience, and research into the Chase Dental Sleep Care of Central New Jersey to assist others in determining the cause of their snoring and the best treatment for it. It has impacted my own life in such a positive way; I hope to share the experience with you. QUESTION: I have been experiencing heel pain in the morning and occasional sensitivity when I walk. Are these symptoms serious and will they go away on their own?

T

he possible causes are: plantar fasciitis, a stress fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, nerve irritation, or, rarely, a cyst. It is important to have heel pain accurately diagnosed by a podiatrist who is able to determine the underlying source of your heel pain. Chances are you have plantar fasciitis or heel spurs. The pain is caused by the inflammation of the fibrous tissue on the bottom of the feet (plantar fascia). The pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone can cause breakage of the fibers, resulting in pain and swelling and the development of the heel spur. The likely causes are flat feet, high arched feet, inflexible calf muscle, poor footwear, arthritis, diabetes, irritation or repetitive trauma to the heel tissue. Typical symptoms are sharp pain and tenderness on

the sole and at the heel bone when standing and walking. If you think you may have plantar fasciitis or have heel pain, do not hesitate to seek treatment. A physician has several options for treatment: anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections to ease the pain and inflammation, strappings and taping to support the foot, Physical Therapy to provide relief of the inflammation and pain, and orthotics to control foot function which may reduce symptoms, to name a few. What Is Osteoarthritis?

O

steoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. People usually have joint pain and stiffness. Unlike rheumatoid arthritis, it does not affect skin tissue, the lungs, eyes, or blood vessels. In osteoarthritis, cartilage—the hard, slippery tissue that protects the ends of bones where they meet to form a joint—wears away. The bones rub together, causing pain, swelling, and loss of motion. Over time, the joint also may lose its normal shape. Bone spurs—small deposits of bone—may grow on the edges of the joint. Also, bits of bone or cartilage can break off inside, causing more pain and damage.

Warning Signs of Osteoarthritis • Pain and stiffness in a joint after getting out of bed or sitting for long. • Swelling in one or more joints, especially those at the ends of the fingers (closest to the nail), thumbs, neck, lower back, knees, and hips. • Crunching feeling or the sound of bone rubbing on bone • Osteoarthritis may progress quickly, but in most people it develops gradually. It is relatively mild and interferes little with daily life in some people. Others have significant pain and disability. • If you feel hot or your skin turns red, or if your joint pain is accompanied by a rash, fevers, or other symptoms, you probably do not have osteoarthritis. Check with your health provider about possible other causes, such as rheumatoid arthritis. • If you are experiencing any pain or have questions, see your doctor for a Physical examination where your doctor will check your strength, reflexes, and general health. n

QUESTION: What makes one eye doctor different from another?

O

ne of the essentials to a medical practice is prevention and early detection of issues. Once diagnosed, your physician can treat your symptoms and work toward your cure. Dr. Steve Linker of Monmouth Vision Associates is currently a member of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians and the American Optometric Association. His optometric training and experience are what you need for your general eye health. While Dr. Linker is able to diagnose and treat your eye health and vision issues, he has made a significant investment in your health by bringing in state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to help with early diagnosis. Early diagnosis of conditions and diseases can lead to a better outcome. A recent addition to his medical office is the iVue. This is a portable, powerful, and simple SD-OCT, which offers the same scanning speed and

resolution as the larger RTVue OCT. OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. This medical imaging technique uses light to capture micrometer-resolution, three-dimensional images from within optical scattering media such as biological tissue. This technique is for obtaining sub-surface images of translucent or opaque materials at a resolution equivalent to a low-power microscope. It is effectively “optical ultrasound,” imaging reflections from within tissue to provide cross-sectional images. The smaller size makes it perfect for office use. The iVue will scan and report the retina, retina nerve fiber, and cornea for assessment by the clinician. To learn more about what you can do to protect the health of your eyes and your vision, visit their office for an exam to discuss your eye care health and the same for your family. They take most medical insurances and have a wonderful selection of frames should you need glasses. A visit to them may be your first line of ocular defense! Live Long and Prosper – Medical Breakthroughs in 2014 By Susan Heckler

T

he medical, scientific and healthcare communities are always busy trying to find new cures and new technology to assist patients and medical professionals to manage patient care. Some of the big breakthroughs for 2014 are: • Newly-developed drugs called “B-cell receptor pathway inhibitors” have been highly effective in treating low-grade B-cell lymphomas and leukemias in clinical trials. • Scientists have now discovered what may be an important new biomarker, called trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which could be a useful screening tool for people who don’t have traditional risk factors. • Computer-Assisted Sedation Without an Anesthesiologist. • Data Rich Wearable Devices that can gather your personal health data and transmit this meaningful information to your medical professionals in real time. • Relaxin for Acute Heart Failure; a type of vasodilator, helps during episodes of acute heart failure by improving blood flow throughout the body. • Cancer Immunotherapy is a new frontier in cancer treatment where your body’s own immune system can eliminate tumors to avoid chemo.

•F ecal Microbiota Transplantation; The process involves the transfer of healthy fecal matter into a sick person’s colon, which restores bacterial balance. • Decision Support System for Anesthesia; in an effort to meet the demands and improve outcomes, a new electronic anesthesia management system has been developed which creates, in real time, a full anesthesia record of events, drugs, and procedures. • Genome Editing to surgically alter the genetic material of an organism. • The Human Microbiome is the study of the 1,000 bacterial species that live in the human digestive system alone and how they are associated with diseases. • Retinal Prosthesis – bionic eyes. • Responsive Neurostimulator for Intractable Epilepsy. • New Hepatitis diagnosis and treatments. Over the last few months, emphasis shifted to Ebola and Enterovirus, which have been in the news. As of October 4, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that four people infected with the Enterovirus had died, but it’s unclear what role the virus played in the deaths. The need for medical breakthroughs seems to be never ending, but at least there is progress! n

What Is COPD?

How Does It Affect Breathing?

C

OPD is a serious lung disease that, over time, makes it hard to breathe. You may also have heard COPD called other names, like emphysema or chronic bronchitis. In people who have COPD, the airways—tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs—are partially blocked, which makes it hard to get air in and out. The air sacs in the lungs may also lose their elasticity and shape. When COPD is severe, shortness of breath and other symptoms of COPD can get in the way of even the most basic tasks, such as doing light housework, taking a walk, even washing and dressing.

You Deserve a

Beautiful Smile

When COPD is severe, shortness of breath can get in the way of even the most basic tasks How Does COPD Affect Breathing? The “airways” are the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs through the nose and mouth. Healthy airways and air sacs in the lungs are elastic—they bounce back to their original shape after being stretched or filled with air, just the way a new rubber band or balloon does. This elastic quality helps retain the normal structure of the lung and helps to move the air quickly in and out. In people with COPD, the air sacs no longer bounce back to their original shape. The airways can also become swollen or thicker than normal, and mucus production might increase. The floppy airways are blocked, or obstructed, making it even harder to get air out of the lungs. Symptoms Many people with COPD avoid activities that they used to enjoy because they become short of breath more easily. Symptoms of COPD include: • Constant coughing, sometimes called “smoker’s cough”

What Is Colorectal Cancer Screening? By Brianna Siciliano

A

screening test is used to look for a disease when a person doesn’t have symptoms. (When a person has symptoms, diagnostic tests are used to find out the cause of the symptoms.) Colorectal cancer almost always develops from precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps, so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening tests can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.

Screening Guidelines Regular screening, beginning at age 50, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for colorectal cancer using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy beginning at age 50 years and continuing until age 75 years.

When Should I Begin to Get Screened? You should begin screening for colorectal cancer soon after turning 50, then continue getting screened at regular intervals. However, you may need to be tested earlier than 50 or more often than other people if — • You or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer.

tudies show that a thermogram identifies precancerous or cancerous cells earlier than mammograms, and produces unambiguous results, which cuts down on additional testing—and it doesn't hurt the body. Thermography's accuracy and reliability is remarkable too according to the American Journal of Surgery and the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Cornell. Thermography can be used as a whole body approach to wellness with the understanding that there is no "normal" asymmetrical heat in the body. Thermal cameras can detect heat on the skin surface that may show underlying pathologies. Heat is an indication that inflammation exists, and typically inflammation is present in precancerous and cancerous cells, too. (It's also present in torn muscles and ligaments as well as arthritic joints, which thermography can also detect.) Breast Thermography is a radiation-free state-of-the-art screening procedure that captures heat images of the breast to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. As a tumor grows it develops a blood supply that emits heat that is detected on a modern infrared device. Thermography can establish overall breast health and is an excellent test for assessing fibrocystic breasts and response to treatment. Thermography also can detect many other ailments such as Systematic Dental Disease.

Some dentists have long claimed a relationship between oral bacteria and breast cancer. With Thermography imaging, we can see how the bacteria spreads through the lymphatic (immune) system. Overall Research The Index Medicus, a comprehensive index of medical scientific journal articles, references more than 800 per-reviewed breast thermography studies, in which over 250,000 women participated. Many of these studies involved very large groups of patients (from 37,000 to over 100,000) and some have followed patients for as much as 12 years. Among other conclusions, these studies found that when thermography has been added to a woman's regular breast health checkups, a 61% increased survival rate was realized, and when used as part of a multi-model approach (clinical examination, mammography and thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected. It is well known that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer and that, if treated in the earliest stages, a 95% cure rate is achieved. The "cure" is early detection. n Don't put it off! Benefits of Vitamin D for Rheumatoid Arthritis By Brianna Siciliano

Dr. Lisa Zimmermann announces the opening of her

NEW MEDICAL OFFICE Treating: Chronic Fatigue • Thyroid Dysfunction Lyme Disease

Dr Lisa Zimmermann has over twenty years of internal medicine experience and five years experience treating and diagnosing chronic fatigue and Lyme disease. She has just finished a three month training sabbatical with one of the leading Lyme physicians.

R

heumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which a body’s immune system attacks––instead of protecting––a body’s joints. The body’s abnormal immune response causes inflammation that can damage joints and organs, including the heart. About 1.5 million people in the United States have rheumatoid arthritis, and most of these people suffer symptoms such as pain, fatigue, joint stiffness, and swollen joints. The pain and stiffness can be eased, thankfully, but how? By diet, of course! Diet plays a major role in many chronic conditions; poor dieting may trigger inflammation. Failing to properly take care of your body, like taking vitamins and minerals everyday, may worsen symptoms for people with arthritis. Everyone should have vitamin D in their diet. Vitamin D helps bones grow properly and stay strong, and it also helps our bodies take in the perfect amount of calcium needed. Vitamin D is extremely important for people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have shown that many medications for RA sufferers have heightened the risks for vitamin D deficiencies. In fact, those who take corticosteroids are two times more likely to be short on vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, bones can become soft and brittle. With arthritis, the last thing your body needs is bone loss! If you have rheumatoid arthritis, getting more vitamin D will definitely benefit your health. Get your vitamin D levels checked often, especially if you take oral steroids for your condition. To increase vitamin D levels, try getting at least 10 to 15 minutes of sunlight ever other day. Doing this will help your body produce vitamin D naturally. By balancing out nutritious foods, vitamins, and minerals, common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis can decrease and lessen the pain that you have to suffer from. Do not let rheumatoid arthritis’ symptoms cause you any more harm than it already has. n

S

omething that most people do not know is that human beings have two main types of fat: white fat and brown fat. White fat stores extra energy, and when your body has too many white fat cells, risks for diseases (like type two diabetes) increase. Brown fat, on the other hand, burns chemical energy to create heat and help your body maintain body temperature. Research has shown that in cold temperatures, white fat cells take on brown fat cell’s characteristics. Over the timespan of four months, research was studied on five healthy men who were an average age of 21. During the day, the men participated in regular activities. At night, the men returned to the private rooms. For the first month of the trial, the men’s rooms were set to temperatures of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. During the second month, the rooms were set to temperatures of 66 degrees. For the third month, the rooms were set to temperatures of 75 degrees once again. During the final month, the rooms were set to temperatures of 81 degrees.

Humans may adjust to cool temperatures by increasing brown fat cells, which in the long run may improve glucose metabolism. The men were exposed to their rooms’ temperatures for at least 10 hours each night. While they were in their private rooms, each man wore standard hospital clothing. There were no blankets for them to use when the room temperature dropped; all the men were offered was their hospital clothing and bedsheets. Meals were provided, and their calorie and nutrient intakes were carefully monitored. At the end of each month, the five men had extensive evaluations, which included muscle and fat biopsies, energy expenditure testing, and PET/CT scanning on their neck and upper back (to measure brown fat volume and activity). After one month of exposure to mild cold temperatures, the five participants had a 42 percent increase in brown fat volume and a 10 percent increase in fat metabolic activity. During the final month of exposure, with the warm temperatures, the results were completely reversed. These findings hint that humans may adjust to cool temperatures by increasing brown fat cells, which in the long run may improve glucose metabolism. These changes can be reversed if human bodies are exposed to warmer temperatures. So, does a room’s temperature affect our fat and metabolism? Yes, it does! n

QUESTION: What is the best way to remove unwanted hair?

G

etting rid of unwanted hair permanently, until now, was known to be costly and painful. We offer the new SopranoXL which is a Pain Free, Hair Free ™ laser system. This state-of-the-art procedure was specially designed to permanently reduce unwanted hair faster, more comfortably and with fewer visits. Our laser is effective for all skin types and perfect for any area of the body—including more sensitive areas like the face, neck and bikini area. Because of Soprano’s patented in-motion technology, even sensitive areas can easily be treated without the pain caused by other systems. By using a sweeping, paintbrush technique, the Soprano significantly reduces procedure time and discomfort, resulting in increased patient satisfaction. We compare the sensation to a “hot stone massage” and patients agree. The type of laser used is the Diode laser and are the most effective of all laser wavelengths for hair removal. Also, the results are lasting hair removal with no downtime.

While electrolysis provides long-term elimination of unwanted hair, it is uncomfortable and can demand years of treatment and excess cost. The laser uses a wide beam that treats hundreds of hair follicles at once, instead of treating hair-by-hair like electrolysis. Large areas such as a back, legs or arms can be treated in a short amount of time. Today, advanced laser systems are replacing unpleasant, time-consuming or short term hair removal methods such as waxing and shaving. Our Soprano laser removes hair without causing irritation, and minimizes the chance of scarring and pigmentation changes. Imagine having hair-free, smooth skin. No more nubs, nicks, hassles or ingrown hairs with virtually painless treatments. The SopranoXL has received FDA approval for “permanent hair reduction” and is effective for both men and women of all skin types, including tanned skin, as well as different hair types. At L’Amore Laser & Medical Spa, there is a female and a male board certified physician who perform the treatments to accommodate your preferences. You should be aware that in the state of NJ only licensed Physicians are permitted to use the lasers for hair removal. n

Rethinking D Drinking

o you enjoy a drink now and then? Many of us do, often when socializing with friends and family. Drinking can be beneficial or harmful, depending on your age and health status, and, of course, how much you drink. For anyone who drinks, Rethinking Drinking is for you. And your loved ones. Rethinking Drinking is an easy-to-use Web site (www.RethinkingDrinking.niaaa. nih.gov) and publication from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). It is designed to help people reduce their risk for alcohol problems. Rethinking Drinking helps you analyze your own drinking and offers the latest, research-based information on the most effective ways to cut down, if necessary. Why not take a look now at your drinking habits and how they may affect your health? Rethinking Drinking can help you get started. Most adults who drink alcohol drink moderately and responsibly without complications. At the same time, alcohol-related problems—which result from drinking too much, too fast, or too often—are among the most significant public issues in the United States and worldwide. An estimated 17 million Americans have an alcohol use disorder, a term that includes both alcoholism and harmful drinking that has not reached the level of dependence. Short-term, alcohol causes someone to feel high, relaxed, or sleepy. Long-term, excessive use can change brain circuits, so that the urge to drink becomes as compelling as hunger. Genetic makeup and environment contribute to the risk for severe alcohol use disorder, which is characterized by: • Craving—a strong need, or compulsion, to drink • Loss of control—inability to stop once drinking has begun • Dependence—withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and negative emotional states, such as anxiety, after periods of heavy drinking • Tolerance—need for increasing amounts of alcohol to get “high” However severe the disorder, many people can benefit from treatment. Talk with your doctor to determine the best course of action for you. n

Can Drinking Milk Be Harmful? Dairy Facts Revealed By Brianna Siciliano

P

eople always wonder about the health benefits and concerns with dairy. In the past, there have been drastic trending weightloss programs designed to exclude dairy products from daily diets, like the Paleo Diet. Many people on the program lost weight, but in the long-run, their bones suffered. Dairy products are essential for bone health, as most of us already know, but can dairy be harmful? In the ‘80s and ‘90s, experiments were conducted in Sweden to examine the relationship between bone fractures and mortality in men and women. Three large countries in Sweden participated in the study, including about 61,433 women aging from 39-74 and about 45,339 men aging from 45-79. The people who ran this study concluded that higher milk intake was associated with higher fracture rates in women and higher death rates in men and women. Is this experiment a reliable source to follow? That is questionable. No two people are exactly alike. Some of the people who took the experiment could have been intolerant to lactose, some of the people could have genetically inherited bone issues that caused fractures, and some of the people could have suffered health issues that had absolutely nothing to do with their dairy intake. Although the Swedish study is trying to prove that dairy is bad for our diets, we have to keep in mind how nutritious dairy is for our bodies. Cow’s milk contains all the proteins, fatty acids, and micro-nutrients needed to nurture a growing calf. Human muscles, cells, and organs are very similar to a calf ’s, which means that dairy

30

ASK THE DOCTOR HOLIDAY 2014

products are a great of a source of nutrients for humans as they are for baby calfs. A single cup of milk (244 grams) contains Calcium, Vitamin D, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin B12, Potassium, Phosphorus, Vitamin A, Vitamins B1 and B6, Senium, Zinc, and Magnesium. All of these nutrients come in a glass that is filled with about 146 calories, 8 grams of fat, and 13 grams of carbs. Do the pros outweigh the cons calorie wise? Absolutely. If the vitamins and minerals are not convincing enough, consider the fact that dairy is the best source of calcium. Many people, especially women, lack the proper amount of calcium in their diets. Including diary products in your everyday diet will lower your risk of calcium deficiencies. With this said, it seems logical that dairy is extremely beneficial for bone health. Many mainstream health organizations recommend that people consume 2-3 servings of dairy per day in order to provide enough calcium for their bones. The bottom line is dairy products are known to have a large impact on health. Can dairy products kill you? Possibly. If you intake too much dairy, like some of the participants in Sweden’s study did, you will face major health concerns. At the same time, if you intake too much of any food, no matter what kind of food it is, health concerns will rise. The key to great health is knowing what your body can and can’t tolerate. Balancing every food group––including dairy––in your daily diet in moderation is the key to a long, healthy life. n

hyllis and Carmine Visone, owners of Home Away From Home Academy, Aberdeen, believe that children arrive in this world eager to learn and that in the time between birth and six years of age, children learn 50% of what we need for a lifetime. Their published educational philosophy, “The Visone Method”, centers on guiding healthy children between the ages of three months through second grade in their own development. Step by step, the Method specifically identifies the most credible procedures for each particular stage and age of development to ensure high quality early childhood education. While the philosophy is a common sense approach to early education, what makes it extraordinary, is that it considers the whole child at every turn. According to parent Lauren Healey, “HAFHA is a truly special place. My three children are happy, and I have seen them grow emotionally, socially, and educationally since entering the school”. For over 20 years, Home Away From Home Academy has begun the educational process earlier, and apparently it is the key to their outstanding success. According to a recent CNN study, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced new guidelines this summer, that encourage doctors to talk not just about nutrition and illnesses, but about the importance of reading out loud, singing and talking during an infant’s first days – all activities that take place from as young as twelve weeks at the Academy. The President of the AAP, James M. Perrin, states, “The benefits are so compelling, that encouraging earlier education has become an essential part of our care”. Phyllis Visone, owner and director of Home Away From Home Academy states, “All children need access to at least two years of high quality pre-school. The children who attend our school have proven that earlier literacy, and access to high quality early education, result in outstanding academic statistics on the elementary level. There is so much potential for more children to succeed, if given the right tools at a younger age.” “The owners of the school through the use of ‘The Visone Method’ have developed an instructional model that will certainly influence the millennial curriculum and will no doubt be widely replicated”, says Irene Sessa, pioneer of the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. “Home Away From Home Academy is a beacon of hope for contemporary early childhood education.” Many parents feel the same way, and it shows in their complimentary statements about the school. Meredith Henriques shares, “The staff and teachers at HAFHA are the best in elementary education. In addition to the reading, math, and writing, they have a fantastic art and music program, a handson science program, and more – truly a foundation to last a lifetime”.

ASK THE DOCTOR HOLIDAY 2014

ecently, an outbreak of disease diagnosis’s have been shared with the world, stirring up a lot of fear and worrying nationwide. The media has created a huge scare about the enterovirus in particular, and has parents fearful of their children’s health and lives. What the media fails to show the world, however, is that enterovirus is less fatal than the flu. There are over 100 types of enteroviruses (EV). These infections are common viruses that occur in the US an estimated 10-15 million each year. Most people that are infected with Enteroviruses have mild to no symptoms, but some infections can be very serious. The spread of EV infections is unpredictable; Enterovirus D68 (a non-polio enterovirus) spreads from person to person when an infected person sneezes, coughs, or touches a surface that is soon after touched by others. Enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) is a type of infection first detected in 1962 in California, and is thought to occur less often than other types of enterovirus infections. In recent months, children were diagnosed with serious cases of EV-D68, and parents nationwide all came together to ask the same three questions: Who is at risk? How is it diagnosed? How do I keep my children safe? Generally, infants, children, and teenagers are most likely to become infected with enteroviruses and become ill. This is because infants, children, and teens are not yet immune from previous exposures to these viruses (at least for EV-D68). Children with asthma may have a higher risk than other children for severe respiratory illnesses caused by EV-D68 infection. Adults can get infected with enteroviruses, but adults are more likely to have mild symptoms, or none at all. To diagnose EV-D68, specific lab tests on specimens from a person’s nose and throat need to be done. Many hospitals, and some doctor’s offices, can test ill patients to see if their illness is an enterovirus infection, but most cannot do specific testing to determine which type of enterovirus, like EV-D68, they may have. It is recommended that clinicians should only consider EV-D68 testing for patients who have severe respiratory illnesses and when the cause of these illnesses are unclear. To protect yourself from getting and spreading EV-D68 (and other respiratory illnesses), it is important to: 1. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. 2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth when your hands are unwashed. 3. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, your shirt sleeve, or your elbow and NOT your hands. 4. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (like toys, doorknobs, computer keyboards, etc.), especially when someone in your household is sick. 5. Stay home when you are sick. 6. Stay up to date with immunizations, especially influenza immunizations! Because of all the media’s buzz about enteroviruses, many people are forgetting about how deadly and frightening the flu is. Even though our nation has accessibility to the flu shot, the disease still sends hundreds of thousands of people to doctor’s offices, hospitals, and sometimes the morgue. If you only remember one point after reading this, then let that point be this: more deaths happen each year because of the flu than an enterovirus. Although the enterovirus is scary, it is less likely to come anywhere near your family members than the flu is. Do not let the media scare you or your family into worrying about a disease that will most likely not harm anyone you know; instead, focus on getting all of your loved ones vaccinated and healthy! n

QUESTION: Why do I have to wear a retainer…and how long is long enough?

M

ost people do not realize that once braces are removed, teeth tend to shift and go back to their pre-braces positions. The teeth and bone have a memory to some degree, many elements influence their position. The muscles in your tongue, cheeks and lips all put pressure on your teeth. The more severe your orthodontic problems were, the more vulnerable you are for shifting. If your teeth had spaces between them, they may shift ever so slightly back into having small gaps. A rotated tooth will want to rotate back. Once your orthodontist has successfully moved your teeth and given you that terrific smile and comfortable bite, it is necessary

for you to wear retainers. Initially it is recommended that you wear them 24/7 for the first year, removing them to eat, brush and play sports. Chewing gum and sticky foods are to be avoided with retainers. After the first year, you will only continue to wear them at night, indefinitely. Your smile is the first thing people notice about you. You have made an investment in that smile with great orthodontic care. Wearing your retainers will protect your investment and maintain that winning smile. n

Parents, Antibiotics Aren’t Always the Answer By Brianna Siciliano

A

ntibiotics do not fight infections caused by viruses like colds, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections. Instead, symptom relief might be the best treatment option for viral infections. Get smart about when antibiotics are needed—to fight bacterial infections. When you use antibiotics appropriately, you do the best for

your health, your family’s health, and the health of those around you. Taking antibiotics for viral infections, such as colds, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus or ear infections: • Will not cure the infection • Will not keep other people from getting sick • Will not help you or your child feel better • May cause unnecessary and harmful side effects • May contribute to antibiotic resistance, which is when bacteria are able to resist the effects of an antibiotic and continue to cause harm Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter products may be your or your child’s best treatment option against viral infections.

What Not to Do • Do not demand antibiotics when your healthcare professional says they are not needed. • Do not take an antibiotic for a viral infection. • Do not take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. The antibiotic may not be right for your illness. Taking the wrong medicine may delay correct treatment and allow bacteria to grow. When your child is sick, antibiotics may not be the answer. Work with your child’s doctor or nurse to learn how you can help your child feel better. n

any hair stylists and hair salons promote hair straightening products and techniques, and without knowing it, these stylists and salons are lowering the confidence levels of many curly and wavy headed clients. Thankfully, in 1984, Ouidad (the curl experts) opened the first salon in the country exclusively for curly hair. Known as the “Queen of Curl,” Ouidad decided to develop products specifically for curly and wavy hair. She believes that curly hair is beautiful and an art; clients with curly hair should feel sexy, gorgeous, and confident, and in order for that to happen, these clients need to embrace their beautiful head of hair! Every Ouidad product is gentle, water-soluble, and moisturizing. After using Ouidad products, curly and wavy headed clients have healthy, manageable, and frizz-free hair. All Ouidad products and stylists are committed to delivering the best results for all different kinds of curly hair. If you are looking to repair damaged curls, tame unruly locks, preserve your hair’s color, fight humidity and heat, or moisturize your head of hair, then you need to shop for Ouidad hair products. As a matter of fact, if you are looking to do just about anything to improve and embrace your curly hair, then Ouidad products are perfect for you! Every Ouidad specialist has undergone extensive training to focus on important aspects of curl care. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow… Are Hair Extensions for You? By Susan Heckler

E

very once in a while it is fun to switch things up and change your look, especially with hair. Many people play with their hair color and others go from curly to straight as it fits their mood. The harder switch is going from short hair to long…or is it? The growing-in phase takes excruciatingly long and can be unattractive. You can spend months growing your hair style out to try longer locks, only to find it wasn’t the look you wanted. There is a faster and easier way; hair extensions to add length and volume to your own hair. You can toy with hair extensions on your own by purchasing the clip-in kits. This is an inexpensive way to get an idea of it you want to make the investment in having a professional hair extension done. The clip-ins get removed when you go to sleep and reapplied daily. There are many different methods of professional hair extensions and the cost can vary from $200-$2,000 depending on what

type of hair your have and what you want done. According to Linda Albani of Salon Bella Donna at 3675 Route 9 North in Old Bridge, you need to be careful what product you choose and who applies it. “You want the extensions to look natural and not damage your own hair. Color matching is the most important thing for a natural look. You also have to know how to incorporate the extensions in with your hair style.” Done well, the extensions can last up to 6 months with maintenance varying by method. Tape-ins last 4-6 weeks at which point new tape is added and can then last up to 6 months. Bonded cold and hot fusions last up to 6 months with very little maintenance. Questions? You can give Linda a call at 732-591-1300. n

THE STRONG & LEAN BODY

Which Yoga Style Is for You? By Susan Heckler

I

t seems every doctor or medical professional I go to recommends the same thing…yoga. It is known to improve your strength, flexibility, and balance as well as release tension in your body, quiet your mind, and help you relax. Okay, sign me up! But what kind of yoga is best for me? What is best for you? There is a class to suit you, whatever your body type, condition or temperament. Before taking a yoga class you will want to consider a few potential issues such as your age, your physical condition and limitations, any injuries that restrict your movements, your weight, level of stress and your need for relaxation or action. The best idea is to touch base with the studio and let them know your personal issues and then take several different classes with several different instructors. Be certain your instructor is well trained and qualified to teach.

Give Loved Ones Experience Gifts By Brianna Siciliano

S

pecial occasions are always creeping up on us, and we often feel confused about what gifts we should give. Giving presents to loved ones can be challenging. We do not want to give the people we care about gifts that they do not like, so most of the time, we end up gifting them with money, an outfit or two, or a bottle of their favorite wine.To spice things up, gift someone an incredible once-ina-lifetime experience. Do you have a thrill-seeking loved one who has a special occasion coming up? If so, why not gift them a certificate to go skydiving, drive a race car, or learn how to fly? Most thrill-seekers have activities like these on their bucket lists, and gifting them a chance to jump off a plane, fly a plane, or drive a race car will show that you care about their passions.

Do you have a loved one who enjoys music or theatre? There are endless experience options of gifts for these kinds of people. If you know someone who enjoys Broadway, gift them with a pair of tickets to see a Broadway play. If your loved one enjoys a certain band or singer, gift them with a pair of tickets to that entertainer’s concert. Do you have a loved one with a passion for creativity? Treat them to a class that they will enjoy the most, whether it is an art class, a photography class, or a cooking class. If that does not sound appealing, why not treat your loved one to a tasting, whether it may be a whine tasting, martini tasting, cheese tasting, or a chocolate tasting. Your loved one will have plenty of happy memories because of your thoughtfulness. Different people enjoy different things, so why should you continue to gift the same presents to every person you care about? Try to personalize gifts for everyone you care about and enjoy the lifelong memories that you are creating. n

Giving someone an experience gift shows that you are thoughtful and that you care about what they enjoy. Next time a loved one’s birthday comes up, treat them to something they would truly enjoy, whether it may be a day at the spa, a dinner at their favorite restaurant, a skydiving trip, or an afternoon at a chocolate tasting.

Having Empathy Is the Last Way to Help Someone By Brianna Siciliano

W

hen we see someone we love suffering, whether it be emotionally or physically, we feel the urge to help them in any way possible. We try to mend them back to better health and help them find happiness once again. During this time, we feel sorry and empathetic for our loved ones, but as it turns out, feeling sorry for our loved ones is not what we need to do. While being empathetic for struggling and suffering loved ones, we are treating ourselves like the struggling soul. We put ourselves in our loved one’s shoes and imagine what their life is currently like. If our loved one is drowning in their sorrow, we jump into the same sorrow and drown ourselves. Is that healthy for anyone? Not at all. Instead of helping the person you intend to help, you end up hurting him or her, as well as hurting yourself. If you truly want to help someone, do not focus on how horrible their current situation is. Do not feel sorry for him or her, because when you do, you do not envision him or her as an equal. Instead, you envision him or her as someone who is less than you are. Instead of putting yourself in their situation, briefly acknowledge their pain and situation. Do not do this for too long—just long enough to discover what you would like for your loved one to feel. For example, if your sister is going through a terrible break up, you want her to find happiness and strength. Picture your loved one at his or her best. Look at

him/her as a healthy, happy, confident, powerful person and think of how you can help your loved one get to that successful point. Do not let yourself get sucked into a complaining conversation with them. Do not complain about the situation that is at hand; instead, stay happy and light. If your loved one must complain, you can listen and allow that, but do not join in. By complaining, you spend a lot of energy on the grieving process and less energy on the healing process. Next, acknowledge that your loved one has the right to feel how he/she feels. When people are in pain, they want others to validate that their pain is real. To acknowledge your loved one’s pain in a safe way, say something along the lines of “_______ is a natural reaction to a situation like this,” or “it is okay to be _______.” It is important for you and your loved one to acknowledge the pain that he or she is suffering because once their feelings are acknowledged, they can begin the process of feeling better. Help your loved one remember who he/she is. Help your loved one find his or her happiness once again. If your brother is struggling, and he used to love painting or boxing, reintroduce him to his passion. If your best friend falls ill, and misses the times where she was able to cook and watch her favorite movies, find a way to incorporate cooking and her favorite films back into her life. Empathy is not going to solve anything, but taking action will. n

o, what in the world is “Life Coaching” anyway? This field has gained much popularity over the past decade in the world of business, but what many people may not realize is that life coaches also work with people on a personal level. Similar to how a personal trainer can bring you to your full potential with your body or a musical coach or athletic coach can inspire greatness with a musician or athlete, life coaching is a process that helps bring out your full potential in your life. Whether your goals are around career, health & wellness, relationships or finances, a coach can help you get out of your own way, clarify what you want and help you gain momentum to have breakthroughs in your life. Unlike counseling or consulting, Life Coaching does not offer professional advice or answers for your circumstances. Rather, life coaching supports you by offering objective feedback so you can find your own answers. Coaches ask thought provoking & powerful questions, offer observations and may challenge and encourage you to stretch beyond your comfort zone. Coaching is a wonderful investment and excellent tool to support you with growing into your highest potential. Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, PCC, ELI-MP is a Licensed Occupational Therapist and Professional Certified Life Coach providing Health & Wellness Coaching for individuals and organizations. Cream Cheese Pound Cake This delicious cake is a healthy substitute for pound cake. It is just as delicious as pound cake, with only a third of the fat and calories. Directions

Ingredients 1 ½ cups of whole-wheat pastry flour

2 tablespoons of light corn syrup

1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour

6 large egg whites

1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder ½ teaspoon of salt 3 large eggs ½ cup of nonfat buttermilk ½ cup of canola oil

1 tablespoon of vanilla extract 2 cups of sugar, divided ½ cup (1 stick) of unsalted butter, softened 8 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese

Preheat oven to 325°F. Coat a 12-cup Bundt pan with cooking spray and dust the pan with flour. Whisk whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk the whole eggs with buttermilk, oil, corn syrup and vanilla in a separate medium bowl until well blended. Beat the egg whites in a separate large bowl with an electric mixer on high speed until light and foamy. Gradually beat in 1/2 cup sugar until stiff glossy peaks form. Beat butter and cream cheese in a large bowl until creamy. Add the remaining 1½ cups sugar and beat, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed, until pale and fluffy, for about 4 minutes. Alternately add the flour and buttermilk mixtures, beating until just smooth. Fold in about one-third of the egg whites with a rubber spatula until everything is smooth, with no white streaks remain. Fold in the remaining egg whites. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake the cake until a skewer inserted into it comes out clean, and the top springs back when touched (should be around 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes). Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Loosen the edges of the cake with a knife and turn the cake out onto the rack; let it cool for at least 1 hour more before slicing. n

HoneyBaked Ham Serves Up a Healthy Holiday

O

ver 40 years ago, Harry J. Hoenselaar began a special tradition when he opened his first “The HoneyBaked Ham” Company store in Michigan. He’d select the finest quality bone-in ham, cure it in his secret marinade, and then for tenderness, he’d smoke the ham for hours over a unique blend of hardwood chips. The crowning touch was Harry’s crunchy sweet glaze that crackled with good taste. He even found a way to slice the ham into perfectly even slices. He invented and patented a unique machine that slices a ham in a single, continuous spiral. The rest is history. Every store of HoneyBaked Ham still prepares the same way Harry did… one ham at a time. Fully prepared, spiral-sliced, HoneyBaked Ham or gently roasted, sweetly glazed turkey breast, you can be sure it will always be perfect. A family owned business, the HoneyBaked Ham store located on Route 35 in Middletown/Red Bank in the Union Square Shopping Center has been serving the community with the finest quality hams on the market for over 15 years. The HoneyBaked Ham is not only known for its savory meats, but also its hearty side dishes and delectable desserts. Packages can be ordered and sent directly to the home or office of corporate clients or relatives. The store also offers catering with hot food or sandwich platters and let us not forget their great individual boxed lunches which would go perfectly with a fresh, homemade soup! The Middletown store has become quite famous for providing ‘the alternative to flowers’; a bereavement gift to share with loved ones. Store owner, Keith Visone says, “Flowers are quite expensive and don’t last very long, but sending a loved one food during a time of need not only lasts but provides comfort for the entire family to enjoy.” Don’t let this holiday pass by without putting a HoneyBaked Ham on your table… the world’s BEST ham! For more information on the Middletown store, or to place an order call 732-842-1115.

What Would Happen If Carbs Were Eliminated from Our Diets? By Brianna Siciliano

A

s surprising as it may sound, you can eat carbs and still maintain great health, and even lose weight! Over the years, tons of trending diets like Atkins and Paleo diets have drilled the principle that diets with high protein and low carbohydrates are the keys to weight loss and weight maintaining, but that is completely false. There is no need to banish all carbohydrates from your everyday diet. In fact, getting rid of carbs may hurt your health instead of help it. Why would you want to do that? People always assume that all carbohydrates are not good for you, and that in order to lose weight and maintain great health, we need to limit carbohydrate intake or eliminate the entire food group completely. This, however, is a major myth. Refined carbs, like sugar, white bread, biscuits, and candies, are the carbs to limit or eliminate, sure. These carbs lack vitamins, fibers, and minerals, and these carbs are usually high in glycemic load. So basically, by reducing or eliminating intake of these refined carbs will help lessen and eliminate inflammation, and at the same time, decrease the aging process. The carbohydrates that provide us with lots of nutrients, like vegetables and fruits, are the carbs to keep

eating. Unrefined carbs contain healthy amounts of antioxidants, minerals, fibers, and vitamins that are vital to our body’s health. These nutrients help improve our heart health, bone health, and digestive system while fighting off inflammation and cancer. With this being said, a lack of healthy carbs––the unrefined carbs––can be dangerous for our bodies. Another huge myth that has been drilled into our brains is that we are supposed to avoid eating carbs after training. Well, this is completely untrue! Unrefined carbs are necessary after working out. Our muscles need protein and unrefined carbs after workouts to replenish glycogen stores, rebuild micro-tear (to help our body’s avoid workout soreness), and prevent further muscle breakdown. After exercising, it is important to replenish our bodies with foods that our bodies crave, for example: bananas, apples, sweet potatoes, and dark green vegetables. Overall, it is important to realize that carbs are good and bad for our bodies. Do not avoid eating carbs, eliminate carbs, or go on low-carb diets to lose weight or maintain health. Instead, eat a balanced diet and enjoy living your healthy life. n

Deceiving Food Options:

Don’t Fall for the Tricks By Brianna Siciliano

C

ravings for mouth-watering treats arise at every corner. We often feel the need to fulfill our desires with options that are believed to be healthier.

For example, instead of grabbing the chocolate bar that has caught our eye, we decide to grab the pre-made trail mix. Trail mix is supposed to be healthy, right? Well, most trail mixes are loaded with deep fried banana chips, yogurt covered raisins, and handfuls of chocolate treats. Two large handfuls of trail mix adds unnecessary sugars, calories, and carbohydrates to our bodies. Are you still craving trail mix? The healthiest trail mixes are the ones that are homemade. Throw a bunch of seeds, dried fruits, unsalted nuts, and a few chocolate treats together and enjoy your healthy treat. Likewise, health bars seem like a quick, healthy, and harmless snack. For instance, fiber and protein bars are high in their added-in nutrients, but the calories and processed ingredients cause the snack to be almost as unhealthy as candy bars. To get better proteins and fibers, go for a cheese stick, an apple, or an ounce of almonds. In a similar and deceitful way, fat-free foods always seem to grab our attention. Do your best to avoid falling into the fat-free trap! Fat-free foods are not always the best option. In fact, most fat-free flavored yogurts have around 15 grams of sugar in a tiny 6-ounce serving. Instead of getting a fat-free flavored yogurt, buy a plain, fat-free Greek yogurt and add some fruit. Be mindful of every food that enters your body, no matter how healthy the food may seem. n

Local Raw Honey—Boundless Health Benefits Local honey is delicious AND nutritious! Some benefits include: Holiday Bazaar coming in December! From The Garden Inc. is going to be opening it’s doors for our 2nd anual Holiday Bazaar. We’re going to have special guest vendors selling all sorts of great gift items. With a focus on locally produced food, we want to give you a taste of all we have to offer and more. The event will be Sunday December 7th from 10am-5pm. Allergy Relief Just a few teaspoons of honey each day can help reduce or even eliminate pollen related allergies. Honey that is local (produced within 50 miles of your home) and raw (never heated or pasteruized) contains trace amounts of the very pollen that causes allergies. Introducing this to your system acts as a sort of vaccine. Topical Salve Raw honey has antiseptic properties. When other topical antibiotics are not well tolerated, honey can be made into an ointment and applied to cuts and wounds, drawing out infection and aiding in healing. Healthy Sweetening Refined sugar and artificial sweeteners are extremely bad news for your health. These processed sweeteners have been directly linked to higher instances of diseases like diabetes and obesity, which wreak havoc on the human body. Honey is much easier for the body to break down and use, wherease refined sugar and artificial sweeteners are mostly stored as fat. Throat Soother Honey taken by the spoonful will soothe a sore throat and acts as a cough suppressant. Adding honey to tea or another favorite warm beverage ups the comfort level even more!

Visit From the Garden for honey and more! We specialize in honey party favors for your wedding, shower, or other special event. See our busy bees working up close in our observation hives, and create a unique gift with our custom gift baskets! From the Garden is open year round, every day except Monday. Four Negative Effects of High Protein Diets

Discover Your Steps to Optimal Health

By Brianna Siciliano

M

any high protein fad diets, including the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet, emphasize eating lots of protein and persuade dieters to avoid carbs like bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice. This protein based diets can help us feel full for longer periods of time and stabilize our blood sugar levels, but they also carry four significant that are not worth taking. 1. Research shows that high protein diets increase risks of osteoporosis. Women who eat high protein diets filled with meats have a higher rate of bone density loss than those who do not. Women who eat lots of meat lose an average of 35 percent of their bone density by the age of 65, while women who do not lose an average of 18 percent. Doctors believe that this is because a high protein diet requires your body to process more calcium. While many high protein diets allow people to consume dairy products like milk, cheeses, and yogurts, our bodies might still take the calcium from our bones to help process the high amounts of protein that we are consuming.

Make sure to fill your diet with foods from all of the food groups, not just proteins! 2. High protein diets are known to cause kidney problems. Our kidneys are responsible for filtering substances, including protein, from our blood. If there is a lot of protein in our diet, our kidneys are working extremely hard and eventually, our kidneys can be strained. People who have reduced kidney function should definitely avoid high protein diets. 3. When eating lots of protein and avoiding carbohydrates–– which are needed to make energy––we are forcing our body to burn dietary fat and protein to make energy. Since we are not getting energy from our carbohydrates, our body burns the protein in the tissues of our hearts, livers, and kidneys for energy. Damage to these organs can eventually lead to organ failure. 4. High protein diets are known to cause nutritional deficiencies. Fruits and vegetables are necessary to a healthy diet because of the vitamins and minerals they provide to our bodies. Cutting out these foods because of their carbohydrates eliminates the dietary fiber and increases the risk of vitamin E and B deficiency. Risks for irritable bowel syndrome and colon cancer are also increased. High protein diets are dangerous may help us drop weight quickly, but in the long run, the risks of these diets are not worth it. n

Living With Diabetes: Keep Your Feet Healthy By Brianna Siciliano

I

If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your health care provider or a podiatrist (foot doctor) right away.

f you have diabetes, it’s important to take care of your feet and the rest of your body. Checking your feet daily can prevent serious problems. People with diabetes can develop serious problems with their feet that can affect how easily they can walk, and even lead to amputation. Many of these serious problems can be prevented by taking good care of your feet and your health. Research shows that diabetes often causes problems with feet and legs, and these problems can be severe. Amputations in people with diabetes account for more than 60% of the amputations of legs and feet not resulting from an injury, such as from a car crash. People with diabetes were eight times as likely to lose a leg or foot to amputation as people without diabetes, according to CDC research.

• You may feel pain in your legs or cramping in your buttocks, thighs, or calves during physical activity. • Your feet may tingle, burn, or hurt. • You may lose the sense of touch or not be able to feel heat or cold very well. • The shape of your feet may change over time. • The color and temperature of your feet may change. • You may lose hair on your toes, feet, and lower legs. • The skin on your feet may become dry and cracked.

These are some of the ways that diabetes can harm your feet:

• Your toenails may turn thick and yellow.

• Diabetes reduces blood flow to certain areas of the body, especially the legs and feet, which makes it harder for your body to heal injuries.

• Fungus infections such as athlete’s foot may appear between your toes. • You may have blisters, sores, ulcers, infected corns and ingrown toenails.

• Diabetes nerve damage may cause you to no longer feel pain in your feet, and you may not realize you have a wound or injury that needs treatment.

If you have diabetes, it is best to see a podiatrist who can monitor and manage the disease so you can stay healthy. n

s we get older, we have one ultimate goal in mind: to stay healthy. Sometimes, we don’t always know what we need to do to stay healthy. Sure, we watch what we eat and exercise as often as we can, but is that enough? Not at all! Once the age of 60 is reached, or surpassed, there are multiple tests that are recommended to keep seniors happy, healthy, and safe. These tests can be done, or ordered, whenever you visit your regular doctor. Your doctor may even recommend additional tests for you based on your personal health profile. So what tests should you look into taking, if you have not already done so? See if any of the tests below catch your eye!

A major health issue with seniors has to do with blood pressure. You might one of the millions of Americans who have high blood pressure and do not even know it! It is very important to get your blood pressure regularly checked by health care providers to make sure that your blood pressure is normal so that your heart, arteries, brain, eyes, and kidneys stay healthy and safe. If you want to avoid having heart attacks or strokes, it would be a good idea to get a cholesterol screening. High cholesterol levels are a major reason as to why seniors have heart attacks or strokes. The good news, though, is that high cholesterol can be treated by medications and a set diet. Measuring your levels of total cholesterol, HDL “good” cholesterol, and LDL “bad” cholesterol, is very important to do regularly. Are you a woman who is afraid of having osteoporosis? Make sure to protect your bones! Osteoporosis is not a force to be reckoned with. People with osteoporosis who suffer from fracture, especially if the fracture is in the hip, significantly increase their risks of permanent disability, or even death. All women should have a bone density test at the age of 65, unless a woman is at a higher risk. In that case, the screening test should be completed at the age of 60. Have you been visiting the eye doctor at least once a year since you turned 60? Well, you should be! Eye diseases like macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma are common diseases to be diagnosed with as we get older. Our eyes should be checked every two years until the age of 60, and then once a year after that milestone. Having your eyes screened can maximize and preserve your vision. It is always a great idea to ask your doctor about different screenings and exams, like prostate cancer screenings, pelvic exams, or breast exams and mammograms. It’s better to be safe than sorry, right? If you have any health concerns or questions, do not hesitate to ask your doctor. You deserve to feel great as the independent, important, and healthy person that you are! n

Perks of Being a Senior By Brianna Siciliano

I

n today’s society, everyone wants to remain forever young. People are always making comments about how ‘young’ we look. Sure, being young has its benefits, but being a senior has just as many. Studies show that seniors are among the happiest groups of people in the world, which may come off as a surprise to many. The truth is: seniors are the most comfortable in their skin. When we are comfortable and confident with ourselves, we stop holding ourselves back from participating in various events and activities. With age, we learn that sweating the small stuff is not worth our time. Instead, we focus on what is truly important and valuable, which brings us to the next perk of being a senior: grandchildren. Being a grandparent is an incredible experience. Grandparents get to experience the joys of little children with the perks of not having to change diapers or wake up in the middle of the night. “The best baby-sitters, of course, are the baby’s grandparents. You feel completely comfortable entrusting your baby to them for long periods, which is why most grandparents flee to Florida.” (Dave Barry). One of the best advantages of being a senior is using senior discounts. When living with a fixed monthly income, it is important to make sure that all of the money is not being spent on leisurely activities. Thanks to senior discounts at the movies, amusement parks, and restaurants, seniors do not have to feel trapped or left out on modern day activities. Being 65 and older doesn’t sound so terrible anymore, does it? n

What You Need to Know About Shingles and Its Vaccine

I

n the U.S., currently 1 million people get shingles every year, and about one out of every three people will get shingles in their lifetime. Shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox, you are at risk of getting shingles. One out of every three people, 60 years old or older will get shingles. One out of six people older than 60 years who get shingles will have severe pain. The pain can last for months or even years. The most common complication of shingles is severe pain where the shingles rash was. This pain can be debilitating.

There is no treatment or cure from this pain. As people get older, they are more likely to develop long-term pain as a complication of shingles and the pain is likely to be more severe. Shingles may also lead to serious complications involving the eye. Very rarely, shingles can also lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, brain inflammation (encephalitis), or death. Adults 60 years old or older should talk to their healthcare professional about getting a one-time dose of the shingles vaccine. n
