What is the latest treatment available for neck and back pain sufferers?

A

breakthrough—Computerized Low Force Chiropractic Treatment— is now available. Individuals suffering from neck and back pain understand the benefits of chiropractic adjustments to relieve pain, but are often wary of the twisting and cracking movements used to adjust the body. However, new technologies continue to transform how chiropractic care is performed. The latest in computerized treatments uses state-of-the-art technology developed by NASA scientists and doesn’t require any bending of the body. Instead, a hand-held instrument provides gentle and effective relief of pain to specific areas of the body, while the patient is completely relaxed in a comfortable, seated position. “By using the ProAdjuster we are able to eliminate people’s fear of traditional chiropractic adjustments because it uses a gentle force delivered by a computerized instrument. Having incorporated this technology into our practice over 6 years ago, we now treat close to 50% of our patients this way,” says Chiropractor Dr. Scott Beck. The ProAdjuster can safely and gently diagnose and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pain in the lower back, neck, shoulder and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say the treatment acts as a mini-massage; most insurance companies, including Medicare, cover the procedure. “The secret to the ProAdjuster lies in its ability to deliver an extremely precise adjustment,” says Dr. Beck. “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and because it does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck.” Dr. Beck wants everyone to experience these benefits, especially those suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Sciatic nerve pain, or pain in the lower back, neck, shoulder, knee or hip. Many people love getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective, but there are a large number of people

who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are afraid to have their spines forcefully adjusted. With the ProAdjuster, there is no longer a reason to be afraid.

Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and because it does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. “After months of suffering from back pain, I scheduled an appointment at Advanced Wellness and was evaluated with the ProAdjuster. The procedure was pain-free and now, so am I! I’m so thankful to everyone at Advanced Wellness for relieving me of my back pain and helping me to get back on my feet!” says Karen Rossin of Marlboro.. Advanced Wellness is a multi-disciplinary practice that offers chiropractic and orthopedic care, podiatry, physical therapy, pain management, acupuncture and nutrition. The Powers of Flowers

A

team of researchers at Rutgers,The State University of New Jersey conducted a behavioral research study that explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction. During a 10-month study of participants’ behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers, the outcomes show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods. Anyone who has received an unexpected bouquet of flowers can corroborate this, as it is a combination of a surprise, a gift and beautiful flowers. Flowers have an instantaneous influence on happiness. All study participants conveyed “true” or “excited” smiles after receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction occurred in all age groups. A specific smile, the “Duchenne smile” is associated with the raising of the cheeks and crinkling around the eyes and has been linked to positive emotion and related changes in the brain. Flowers have a longterm positive effect on moods. Study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction. Flowers last for many days so the feeling lingers with them. They stimulate several of your senses, sight, smell and touch. Not all flowers have the same effect on us.There is a theory that the color of a flower plays a key role in the perception of people’s senses, which undoubtedly has an effect on our emotions and our cognition. Red flowers supposedly improve a person’s performance on jobs that are very detail-oriented. Red is also linked with caution and danger. Blue increases creative thinking and is associated with honesty and peace. The shades that seem to be the most appealing are blue-green, blue, green, purple and red-purple. The least likable hues of flowers consist of yellow and yellow-green. Studies conducted at Rutgers and Harvard revealed that participants in the study were twelve percent more productive when fragrant plants were introduced in the workplace. The study also showed that compassion and kindness levels increased within a week in people when fragrant plants were introduced into the workplace. Edward Bach, British doctor, discovered and developed 38 flower essences in the 1930’s.Today they are called Bach flower remedies and are used homeopathically in conjunction with herbs. The purpose of these remedies is to gently re-balance our mental and emotional state. Most of them are from wildflowers found in the countryside and woods. Each one relates to a different emotional state. These are grouped in seven categories: fear, loneliness, uncertainty, lack of interest, despondency and despair, oversensitivity, and over care for others. The philosophy of Dr. Bach was principally to deal with the balance of the soul, spirit and body. Pick up a bouquet for yourself or a friend, plant that dream garden and smile, smile, smile! n

QUESTION: Could I have Endometriosis?

E

ndometriosis affects approximately 5.5 million women. There is no difference in ethnicities or cultures. There is some evidence of a genetic predisposition to developing endometriosis and appears that first-degree relatives of women with this disease are at risk. Endometriosis is the uterine lining found outside the uterine cavity. The most accepted etiology is back flow of menstrual tissue through the fallopian tubes at the time of a women’s menstruation. This tissue can adhere to any organ in the abdomen and can cause problems. Symptoms can manifest in a variety of ways. Each woman’s symptoms will vary, but some of the hallmark symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain with or without menstruation, painful intercourse, painful orgasms, heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding, painful bowel movements, intestinal bloating, lower back pain, bladder pain, or infertility. Many of the symptoms improve with drug therapies, but return once treatment is stopped. Usually, surgical intervention is considered if medical treatment fails or if conception is desired. During surgery, the severity

of the disease is determined based on the extent of the disease would determine the next course of treatment. Even though women with endometriosis can conceive naturally approximately 40% of women with infertility have endometriosis. This can cause scar tissue which could block the fallopian tubes or could invade the ovary and prevent ovulation. Studies have shown that laparoscopic surgery performed on infertile women does enhance fertility. When surgery or other treatments fail, women often consider fertility medications, intrauterine insemination or in-vitro fertilization. Endometriosis is a life altering disease. It can cause problems with every aspect of a woman’s life. Most women have endured many years of pain or infertility before being diagnosed. In essence, endometriosis invades the very fabric of a woman’s being. The treatment of endometriosis is multi-faceted. We need to direct treatment to address the psychological impact as well as the physical complaints. n

QUESTION:

Dr. Dinah Gonzalez

As a woman, how do you know if your gynecological symptoms are normal vs. more serious?

T

hank you for asking such an important question. As women, it’s hard to determine what is “normal” and when you should make an appointment with a gynecologist—especially since our bodies go through changes by the day, week and month. One rule of thumb to maintain good reproductive and sexual health is to see your gynecologist annually. At that time, your doctor will likely ask questions about your sexual activity and menstrual cycle and complete a physical exam of your breasts and genitals. You may also discuss personal and family medical history, safe sex, birth control counseling and testing for sexually transmitted infections. It’s the perfect time to ask questions and express concerns, so bring a list of symptoms with you. For your annual exam—or any visit to your gynecologist—be sure to know the date of your last period and how long they typically last. You should abstain from sexual intercourse and oral sex for about two days before the appointment, because sexual activity may irritate the vaginal tissue and increase the chance of incorrect Pap test results. These exams and tests are indicators of your gynecological health. Outside of your annual visit, make an appointment for unusual symptoms such as: • Bleeding between periods • Frequent and urgent need to urinate, or burning sensation during urination

• Abnormal vaginal bleeding, particularly during or after intercourse • Pain or pressure in your pelvis that differs from menstrual cramps • Itching, swelling, redness, or soreness in the vaginal area • Sores or bumps in the genital area • Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant or unusual odor, or of an unusual color • Increase vaginal discharge • Pain or discomfort during intercourse Your gynecologist, nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwife can determine the best treatment for your concerns. QUESTION:

Dr. Holli Alster

I have this big bump on the joint under my big toe that is very painful. What is it? It sounds like you have a bunion. The affected joint is the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ). A bunion is caused when the bone or tissue at the joint moves out of place for some reason. This forces the toe to bend toward the other toes, producing a painful lump of bone on the foot. Because the MTPJ carries a lot of the body’s weight, bunions can cause extreme pain if left untreated. This is a symptom of faulty foot development and is usually caused by the way we walk, our inherited foot type, or our shoes. It tends to run in families; you may have inherited your feet from someone prone to bunions. Other possible causes of bunions are foot injuries, neuromuscular disorders, or congenital deformities. If you have flat feet or low arches, you are prone to developing these problems, as are arthritic patients and those with inflammatory joint disease. You can try a few things on your own that may alleviate the pain; apply a commercial, non-medicated bunion pad around the bony lump, wear shoes with a wide and deep toe box and avoid high-heeled shoes.

If discomfort persists, you need to see your foot and ankle specialist for medical attention. A podiatrist has several options of treatment; anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections to ease the pain and inflammation, Physical Therapy to provide relief of the inflammation and pain, orthotics to control foot function, which may reduce symptoms and prevent worsening of the deformity. Surgery may become necessary to remove the bony enlargement, restore the normal alignment of the toe joint, and relieve pain. As a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, I am Board Certified in Foot and Rearfoot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery. I have been practicing podiatric surgery in central Jersey for the last 10 years, serving all your foot and ankle concerns. n

10 Things Science Says Will Make YOU HAPPY

I

n the last few years, psychologists and researchers have been digging up hard data on a question previously left to philosophers: What makes us happy? Researchers like the father-son team Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener, Stanford psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky, and ethicist Stephen Post have studied people all over the world to find out how things like money, attitude, culture, memory, health, altruism, and our day-to-day habits affect our well-being. The emerging field of positive psychology is bursting with new findings that suggest your actions can have a significant effect on your happiness and satisfaction with life. Here are 10 scientifically proven strategies for getting happy. SAVOR EVERYDAY MOMENTS Pause now and then to smell a rose or watch children at play. Study participants who took time to “savor” ordinary events that they normally hurried through, or to think back on pleasant moments from their day, “showed significant increases in happiness and reductions in depression,” says psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky.

AVOID COMPARISONS While keeping up with the Joneses is part of American culture, comparing ourselves with others can be damaging to happiness and self-esteem. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, focusing on our own personal achievement leads to greater satisfaction, according to Lyubomirsky.

PUT MONEY LOW ON THE LIST People who put money high on their priority list are more at risk for depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, according to researchers Tim Kasser and Richard Ryan. Their findings hold true across nations and cultures. “The more we seek satisfactions in material goods, the less we find them there,” Ryan says. “The satisfaction has a short half-life—it’s very fleeting.” Money-seekers also score lower on tests of vitality and self-actualization.

HAVE MEANINGFUL GOALS “People who strive for something significant, whether it’s learning a new craft or raising moral children, are far happier than those who don’t have strong dreams or aspirations,” say Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener. “As humans, we actually require a sense of meaning to thrive.” Harvard’s resident happiness professor, Tal Ben-Shahar, agrees, “Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning. Whether at work or at home, the goal is to engage in activities that are both personally significant and enjoyable.”

TAKE INITIATIVE AT WORK How happy you are at work depends in part on how much initiative you take. Researcher Amy Wrzesniewski says that when we express creativity, help others, suggest improvements, or do additional tasks on the job, we make our work more rewarding and feel more in control.

MAKE FRIENDS, TREASURE FAMILY Happier people tend to have good families, friends, and supportive relationships, say Diener and Biswas-Diener. But it’s not enough to be the life of the party if you’re surrounded by shallow acquaintances. “We don’t just need relationships, we need close ones” that involve understanding and caring.

SMILE EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT It sounds simple, but it works. “Happy people…see possibilities, opportunities, and success. When they think of the future, they are optimistic, and when they review the past, they tend to savor the high points,” say Diener and Biswas-Diener. Even if you weren’t born looking at the glass as half-full, with practice, a positive outlook can become a habit.

SAY THANK YOU LIKE YOU MEAN IT People who keep gratitude journals on a weekly basis are healthier, more optimistic, and more likely to make progress toward achieving personal goals, according to author Robert Emmons. Research by Martin Seligman, founder of positive psychology, revealed that people who write “gratitude letters” to someone who made a difference in their lives score higher on happiness, and lower on depression—and the effect lasts for weeks.

GET OUT AND EXERCISE A Duke University study shows that exercise may be just as effective as drugs in treating depression, without all the side effects and expense. Other research shows that in addition to health benefits, regular exercise offers a sense of accomplishment and opportunity for social interaction, releases feel-good endorphins, and boosts self-esteem.

GIVE IT AWAY, GIVE IT AWAY NOW! Make altruism and giving part of your life, and be purposeful about it. Researcher Stephen Post says helping a neighbor, volunteering, or donating goods and services results in a “helper’s high,” and you get more health benefits than you would from exercise or quitting smoking. Listening to a friend, passing on your skills, celebrating others’ successes, and forgiveness also contribute to happiness, he says. Researcher Elizabeth Dunn found that those who spend money on others reported much greater happiness than those who spend it on themselves. n

QUESTION: My child’s teeth look straight. Why does he/she need braces?

E

ven though most kids want braces at one point (because their friends have them), most parents are really not sure why and if their child “needs” braces. The teeth may be perfectly straight but the bite may be off; there could be an “overbite” where the top teeth are protruding or an “underbite” where the top teeth are inside the bottom teeth. This maybe just a

Overbite

Underbite

dental problem, where the interdigitation of the teeth are off. Or it could be a more serious skeletal problem where the relationship of the top jaw to the bottom jaw needs a correction. Orthodontic treatment can correct both teeth and jaw alignment problems. However, age is an important factor. Bite issues with underlying jaw discrepancies can only be corrected in a growing child. Once growth stops then any bite correction becomes a surgical procedure. American Association of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics recommends that children are seen by an orthodontist by age 7. To start orthodontic treatment, not all baby teeth have to be lost. Sometimes treatment is started with plenty of baby teeth to make room for the adult teeth. It all depends on the problem. For any questions or concerns regarding your or your child teeth please call the office for complementary evaluation. n

Neurosurgical Practice Offers Next-Generation Treatments and Community Awareness

W

Don’t be fooled by temporary solutions. They won’t fix your spine. With the number of Americans suffering from back pain on the rise, it’s no surprise there are so many specialists offering relief. For this reason, it is important that patients know what to look for when choosing their specialist. Don’t put yourself at risk. Only trust a neurosurgeon to diagnose and treat your delicate nervous system. At Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists (ANS), all of our neurosurgeons are board-certified. Most notably, 5 of ANS’s neurosurgeons are fellowship-trained in spine and hold national recognition in their specialty. In turn, ANS remains the largest and most reputable neurosurgical practice in New Jersey. Don’t let insurance come before your health. ANS sees all patients. ith the recent rising popularity of “boutique surgeries” being offered by less qualified specialists, yielding temporary results at best, ANS has launched an awareness campaign to educate the community on the importance of choosing a neurosurgeon for an accurate diagnosis. Neurosurgeons are highly qualified specialists to diagnose and treat your back pain as well as other ailments associated with your delicate nervous system. “We hope this campaign will make people think twice before allowing surgery to be performed by someone other than a surgeon,” says Tom Wood of ANS. ANS performs the most minimally invasive spine surgeries in New Jersey. These minimally invasive procedures are performed through an incision the size of a dime. Benefits include faster recovery time and less pain. ANS’s Dr. David Wells-Roth explains why a neurosurgeon is the best fit to treat your spine. “Your spinal cord is the link between your brain and the rest of the body and must be handled with care. A neurosurgeon is specifically trained to treat the intricacies of the spine and nerves involved. I have seen many failed back surgeries from patients who have had quick-fix surgeries such as laser surgery.” ANS’s Dr. Kyle ChapWe hope this campaign will ple further explains the dangers. “When patients make people think twice choose these attractive procedures, they can risk before allowing surgery to doing more harm than be performed by someone good. We urge a patient considering surgery to other than a surgeon. make sure their doctor is a trained surgeon.” ANS’s neurosurgeons are all board-certified and most notably, five of its neurosurgeons are fellowship-trained: Drs. Jack Knightly, Jay Chun, Jonathan Baskin, Scott Meyer and Charlie Stillerman. QUESTION:

S

I buy the least expensive sunglasses that look nice since they all shade my eyes. What is the sense of spending more?

unglasses are definitely a fashion accessory, but they are also an essential weapon in the war to protect the health of your eyes. The cost of the glasses does not necessarily reflect whether or not the glasses will adequately protect your eyes. The quality of the lenses is the trick. There are many high end, high fashion sunglasses that will not adequately protect you. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can burn and damage skin as well as hurt the lens and cornea of the eyes. Ophthalmologists recommend that you wear 99% and above, both UVA and UVB rays, UV-absorbent sunglasses whenever you’re in the sun for long periods of time. Typically, most sun wear lenses will be UV absorptive to some degree. If lenses are marked CR-39R plastic, about 88 percent of UV light is absorbed. If sunglasses contain polycarbonate lenses, UV absorption will be 100 percent. UV radiation increases your odds of getting cataracts, which cloud the eye’s lens and lead to weakened eyesight. UV rays have also been linked to macular degeneration, an incurable but treatable disease of the macula, a part of the retina that is crucial for good vision. Other potential UV-related eye problems are pterygium and pingueculum. A pterygium happens when the tissue that lies over the white of the eye, grows into the cornea. A pingueculum is a yellowish bump of tissue on the white of the eye. Sunglasses are not just for summer, they should be worn anytime you are outdoors. During the summer, the level of UVA and UVB radiation is at least three times higher. Sunlight bounces off highly reflective surfaces such as snow, water, sand, or pavement and can be especially dangerous. Photokeratitis is sunburn of the cornea that’s also known as snow blindness. As the name suggests, skiers and snowboarders are particularly vulnerable to this temporary but acutely painful condition. Taking certain medications that can cause photosensitivity.

In addition to protecting the actual eye, sunglasses play a vital role in shielding the fragile tissue around the eye. Skin cancer in the form of basal cell, squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma also affect the area around your eyes. Squinting to avoid sunlight forms wrinkles like crow’s feet and the unsightly thickening of the skin that can sometimes be caused by UV exposure. Standard prescription eyeglasses in the U.S. are treated to provide UV protection while retaining a clear, non-tinted appearance. The color and degree of darkness sunglasses provide have nothing to do with the sunglasses’ ability to block UV rays. Some contact lenses also offer UV protection, but should be worn in combination with sunglasses to maximize protection. Inexpensive glasses can do you more harm than good. The pupils in our eyes dilate behind dark lenses. Cheap shades will actually let more damaging rays into your eyes than if you weren’t wearing any sunglasses at all. In addition to UV protection, consider these extras not available in ready-to-wear sunglasses: • Blue-blocking lenses • Polarized lenses • Photochromic lenses • Polycarbonate lenses • Mirror-coated lenses • Single-gradient and Double-gradient lenses Come see our extensive optical showroom so we can show you the varieties of sunglasses for prescription and non-prescription wearers. Prostate Cancer Screening: Questions for the Doctor

P

rostate cancer is a type of cancer that mostly affects older men. After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Many men have questions about prostate cancer screening (testing). Even though prostate cancer is common, screening for it isn’t recommended. The information below can help you start a conversation about prostate cancer with your doctor or nurse.

“I have not had many opportunities or choices to share my knowledge, services and specialties with Monmouth County residents. NOW I DO.”

What is the prostate? The male prostate is a small sex gland that makes fluid to carry sperm. It’s located below the bladder and in front of the rectum.

Who is at risk for prostate cancer? Risk factors for prostate cancer include: • Being age 50 or older • Being African American • Having a father, brother, or son who had prostate cancer

Why isn’t screening recommended for prostate cancer? Screening for prostate cancer isn’t recommended because the risks of screening and treatment outweigh the benefits. • Most of the time, prostate cancer grows so slowly that men won’t die from it or have any symptoms. • The treatment of prostate cancer is more likely to cause medical problems than the prostate cancer itself. • The screening tests that are available now can’t tell if you have a cancer that will cause problems or not.

How Strong Is Your Family?

ultural changes have transformed the typical family. More single parent families, more grandparents picking up the slack of busy or missing parents. Growing pressures conspire against keeping families strong; two income families took Mom away from the home. The whole family is plugged in to the Internet and electronics; the art of conversation is lost to texting and meals on the fly. There are so many distractions and disruptions in our day to day lives.

BECAUSE YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR SURE: • Abnormally shaped sperm • Sperm with poor motility • Poor sperm quality • Sperm that cannot attach the head to egg We are all individuals who are trying to live our own lives with our own personal needs, wishes and goals. Aristotle was one of the greatest philosophers. 2,300 years ago, he penned, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” As we plod along in our routine and plan out our lives, we all have to keep in mind that we are just one part of a whole…the whole being your family. One goal that is especially important to many is to keep their family strong. The Search Institute has come up with a framework to help do just that. The five themes are: • Nurturing Relationships Healthy relationships begin and grow as we share emotions, show we care, and share interests. • Establishing Routines Shared routines, traditions, and activities give a dependable rhythm to family life. • Maintaining Expectations Expectations make it clear how each person participates in and contributes to family life. Shared expectations require talking about tough topics. • Adapting to Challenge Every family faces challenges, large and small. The ways families face and adapt to those changes together help them through the ups and downs of life. • Connecting to Community Community connections, relationships, and participation sustain, shape, and enrich how families live their lives together. It may be time to reassess your goals and incorporate these themes into your home to strengthen your family for the betterment of all concerned. n

Digestive Wellness – Avoiding Tummy Troubles

T

here is so much information floating around about digestive wellness that deciphering it all can make you sick to your stomach. Back in ‘the day,’ you ate what you ate and suffered the consequences. We knew little about the connection between the food we ate and how we feel, physically and emotionally. Many people are so focused on losing weight that they often forget about the general health of their body and the nutritional implications of fad diets. The human digestive system, also known as gastrointestinal (GI) tract is comprised by the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. This is the system responsible for digestion and absorption of nutrients. If any of these parts are not working properly, it could lead to discomfort, headaches, embarrassment, and nutritional deficiencies with health implications. These problems may be the result of bacteria in food, infection, stress, reaction to certain medications, or chronic medical conditions such as colitis, Crohn’s disease, and IBS. In the United States alone, over 70 million people experience digestive disorders so you are in good company. Step 1: Listen to your body and follow your gut instincts. Digestive issues like diarrhea, heartburn, and gas are signs something isn’t right. Many things can trigger digestive upsets. Try to pinpoint your own triggers by analyzing your eating patterns. Don’t ignore them. Step 2: Take steps to help prevent digestive problems such as: • Don’t rush your meals, small bites, chew food thoroughly, and don’t overeat. • Get plenty of fluids; too little fluid slows down your digestive system. Good sources include water, broth, and soups. • Eat a variety of foods that contain 25-30 grams of dietary fiber per day. Fiber promotes digestive health and can be found in many fruits and vegetables, as well as in beans, peas, and lentils • Limit your consumption of fats and alcohol. Fat takes a long time to break down and digest, leading to constipation, gas, and indigestion. • Experiment with probiotics; Most of the gas in your intestine is produced by bacteria, but there are also strains of bacteria that have the opposite effect. Adding probiotic foods to your diet can help populate your gut with helpful bacteria that can ease digestion and reduce gas • Exercise daily. Physical activity speeds up digestion, increases blood flow to all your organs, and stimulates muscles in the GI tract. • Clothes that are tight on the stomach can cause abdominal problems. • Cleanliness is essential; wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before preparing food and eating food and after using the bathroom, changing diapers, handling garbage, handling raw meat, and handling pets or their waste. Step 3: Partner with your doctor.Your doctor will determine the reasons for your digestive problems and will prescribe a treatment plan such as suggesting dietary guidelines, and may prescribe medication to improve your digestive problem. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before trying over-the-counter remedies or supplements to determine possible side effects and drug interactions. Be careful who you accept advice from; always consult your doctor before trying any alternative therapy or supplement. Eat, drink and be merry! n

Crohn’s Disease in a Nutshell C

rohn’s disease, named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn who first described the disease in 1932, belongs to a group of conditions known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). It is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract which most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (the ileum) and the beginning of the colon, but may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Crohn’s disease may affect as many as 700,000 Americans. It is more prevalent among adolescents and young adults, men and women equally, between the ages of 15 and 35. Diet and stress may exacerbate Crohn’s Disease, but they do not cause the disease. Cigarette smoking, ethnicity, family history and living in an urban area are contributing factors. While symptoms vary, they may include; persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, urgent need to move bowels, abdominal cramps and pain, sensation of incomplete evacuation, or constipation which can lead to bowel obstruction. Some experience loss of appetite and may lose weight as a result, some have a feeling of low energy and fatigue. Among younger children, Crohn’s may delay growth and development. Sufferers may also have fever, night sweats, and loss of their normal menstrual cycle. There is no standard treatment; each patient’s treatment must be followed for each circumstance as each situation is different. Treatment for Crohn’s can include the use of medication, alterations in diet and nutrition, and sometimes surgical procedures to repair or remove affected portions of your Gastro Intestinal tract. The trick is to stay on top of the disease. n

f you’re like most Americans, you’ve probably got a few extra pounds you can live without. Unfortunately, after what seems like hundreds of diets and workouts, those unwanted pounds hang on for dear life. Soon the frustration sets in and you are wondering what went wrong and why the pounds aren’t melting off like you thought they would. You are not alone, and the answer is a little simpler than you think. The problem can be found in metabolism. For those unsure, metabolism is defined as the transformation of food into energy. In theory, if the amount of food or calories you need amounts exactly to the amount of calories you consume, your weight will Dr. Robert Frankel, MD remain unchanged or even increase. When the amount of calories consumed exceed the amount of calories needed, the excess is stored as fat. Judging from the pattern, one might conclude that less calorie intake will result in painless weight loss. However, it doesn’t always work that way and it’s evident when listening to diet sob stories from patients. Lost 40 lbs. in 41 days! The most common story I hear goes something like this, “I starved myself for weeks and lost some weight initially. Then my weight seemed to plateau. I got frustrated and ended my diet. As soon as I went off the diet, I gained all the weight back very quickly. What happens to most in these situations is the loss of water weight during the first few days and then you start breaking down muscle. In the HEAT of the Moment

C

ongratulations, you have survived the ‘Winter from Hell.’ The trees are budding and the first signs of spring have sprung. It seems a long way away, but we need to start thinking about summer and the hot weather. Heat Awareness Day is May 23, 2014. Anyone who is exposed to extreme heat or hot environments may be at risk of heat stress. Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, even so an average of 688 deaths each year in the U.S. are attributed to it. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Workers at risk of heat stress include outdoor workers, but also workers exposed to hot environments such as firefighters, bakery or kitchen workers, farmers or construction workers, or anywhere you would be wishing for air conditioning. Senior citizens, those who are overweight, have heart disease or high blood pressure, or take certain medications, infants and children, and athletes may be affected by extreme heat and are at greater risk. Our bodies naturally react to heat by perspiring and breathing. The Center for Disease Control recommends keeping your body temperature cool to avoid heat-related illness, be sure to stay hydrated because your body loses fluids through sweat (you can become dehydrated during times of extreme heat), and stay updated on local weather forecasts so you can plan activities safely when it’s hot outside. Heat exhaustion is a common reaction to severe heat and can include symptoms such as dizziness, headache and fainting. With rest, a cool environment and hydration (including refueling of electrolytes, which are necessary for muscle and other body functions) the symptoms diminish. When

a person is exposed to heat for a very long time, the first thing that shuts down is the ability to sweat. When perspiration is dried by the air, it has a cooling effect on the body. When perspiration stops, a person can move from heat exhaustion to heat stroke rapidly. Heat stroke is more severe and requires medical attention—it is often accompanied by dry skin, a body temperature above 103 degrees Fahrenheit, confusion and sometimes unconsciousness. Heat and humidity is a dangerous combination. When you factor relative humidity into the air temperature, it feels like it is much warmer than the thermometer reads. As an example, if the air temperature is 96°F and the relative humidity is 65%, the heat index—how hot it feels—is 121°F! We should all remember not to leave children and pets in the cars in any weather, but especially in the warm months. Even with windows open on a mild day, the body absorbs more heat than it can handle. This is called hyperthermia, and is responsible for untold deaths each year. If you are uncertain whether or not the weather will impact your health, don’t make those plans. Summer is a time for fun in the sun, be smart and be safe…when in doubt, do without. n

KNEE PAIN

QUESTION: I have arthritis in my knee. What can I do to relieve the pain? I have knee pain from arthritis. Is knee replacement my only option? Osteoarthritis of the knee is the #1 leading cause of disability in the U.S. Over 27 million people suffer with knee arthritis and that number continues to grow. With knee arthritis, the cartilage breaks down and wears away, leaving the bones to rub together causing pain swelling stiffness and limited range of motion. As the cartilage breaks down, the knee loses its lubricating fluid. We found that by replacing this lubricating fluid with a natural substance called Hyalgan, the lubrication is restored and many patients experience amazing pain relief. What is Hyalgan and how does it work? Hyalgan is a natural lubricating fluid that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber inside the knee joint. The substance in Hyalgan is hyularonic acid which is normally found in high levels in healthy joints. Replacing the hyularonic acid with Hyalgan lubricates the joint and reduces pain. Hyalgan has been administered over 40 million times and has been proven to provide long-lasting relief of knee pain from osteoarthritis. What if you already tried knee injections? If you have had injections like this in the past and experienced poor results, there is still hope! Many doctors in this area offer similar injections, but very few use precision fluoroscopy guidance. Fluoroscopy guidance ensures that the pain relieving Hyalgan reaches the knee capsule where it bonds with the joint fluid to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. Without fluoroscopy, it is estimated that doctors “miss” the capsule over 30% of the time resulting in poor results. We want each and every one of our patients to have the greatest chance of success, so every injection is done with precision fluoroscopy guidance to ensure that the Hyalgan gets into the capsule 100% of the time. Because of this, patients who previously felt little to no relief with non-flouroscopy guided injection are now getting excellent results. The other “big difference” in our results is the multitude of other supportive care options that we have available to enhance the effectiveness of the Hyalgan procedure. These options include state of the art medical laser treatment, physical therapy, manipulation, corrective osteoarthritis bracing (takes pressure off the damaged section of the knee), and natural anti-inflammatory products. The combination of these treatments offers you what we feel is the most comprehensive non-surgical knee treatment program available.

he has excelled in the non-surgical treatment of knee pain with the use of fluoroscopy guided Hyalgan injections. So how do I know if your knee pain treatment program will help me? If you are tired of suffering with painful arthritis of the knee, and you want to see if the latest advances in non-surgical treatment can help, all you have to do is call 732-683-1800 to set up a risk free consultation. During the consultation all of your questions will be answered in a warm and friendly environment. Knee replacement surgery is a very extreme measure to take without considering all of your other options first. Once it’s done there is no turning back. For that reason we encourage you to schedule an appointment to see if you are a candidate for Hyalgan treatment. We are proud to offer our patients a comprehensive knee pain treatment program that includes the best non-surgical methods to relieve pain all under one roof. We look forward to having the opportunity to help you feel better. Take the first step in ending your knee pain and call to schedule an appointment today! n For more information, please call (732) 683-1800. Does it hurt? Many of our patients report that they feel little to no pain at all! We do everything possible to minimize any pain from the procedure, from pain relieving spray and a local anesthetic, to precision guidance that ensures we are always in the right spot. Will my insurance cover Hyalgan? This procedure is covered by most major insurance companies including Medicare. Our insurance department pre-verifies every patient. Who will be performing the Hyalgan procedure? Dr. Scot Paris is the medical physician who performs the Hyalgan injection. Dr. Paris is trained as a general surgeon and has extensive experience with a variety of surgical procedures. With his conservative approach,

Fabulous Foot Care Guide Whether you like to get a pedicure in the nail salon or at home, follow these easy Dos and Don’ts to keep your feet looking and feeling their best. DO:

DON’T:

✓ Schedule your pedicure first thing in the morning. Salon foot baths are typically cleanest earlier in the day. If you’re not a morning person, make sure that the salon filters and cleans the foot bath between clients.

✗R esist the urge to shave your legs before receiving a pedicure. Freshly shaven legs or small cuts on your legs may allow bacteria to enter.

✓B ring your own pedicure utensils to the salon. Bacteria and fungus can move easily from one person to the next if the salon doesn’t use proper sterilization techniques. ✓W hen eliminating thick, dead skin build-up, also known as calluses, on the heel, ball and sides of the feet, use a pumice stone, foot file or exfoliating scrub. Soak feet in warm water for at least five minutes, then use the stone, scrub, or foot file to gently smooth calluses and other rough patches. ✓W hen trimming nails, use a toenail clipper with a straight edge to ensure your toenail is cut straight across. Other tools like manicure scissors or fingernail clippers increase the risk of ingrown toenails because of their small, curved shape. See a podiatrist if you have a tendency to develop ingrown toenails. ✓T o smooth nail edges, use an emery board. File lightly in one direction without using too much pressure, being sure not to scrape the nail’s surface. ✓G ently run a wooden or rubber manicure stick under your nails to keep them clean. This helps remove the dirt and build-up you may or may not be able to see. ✓M aintain the proper moisture balance of the skin on your feet by applying emollient-enriched moisturizer to keep soles soft. ✓U se a rubber cuticle pusher or manicure stick to gently push back cuticles. If toenails are healthy, you can use nail polish to paint toenails. Make sure to remove polish regularly using non-acetone nail polish remover.

✗ I f you are receiving a pedicure and manicure, don’t use the same tools for both services as bacteria and fungus can transfer between fingers and toes. ✗A lthough certain salons offer this technique, don’t allow technicians to use a foot razor to remove dead skin. Using a razor can result in permanent damage if used incorrectly and can easily cause infection if too much skin is removed. ✗D on’t round the edges of your toenails. This type of shape increases the chances that painful ingrown toenails will develop. ✗ E mery boards are extremely porous and can trap germs that spread. Since they can’t be sterilized, don’t share nail files with friends and be sure to bring your own to the salon, unless you are sure that the salon replaces them with each customer. ✗D on’t use any sharp tools to clean under nails. Using anything sharp makes it easy to puncture the skin, leaving it vulnerable to infection. ✗B e sure that you don’t leave any moisture between toes. Anything left behind can promote the development of athlete’s foot or a fungal infection. ✗B ecause cuticles serve as a protective barrier against bacteria, don’t ever cut them. Cutting cuticles increases the risk of infection. Also, avoid incessantly pushing back cuticles, as doing so can make them thicker. ✗ I f you suffer from thick and discolored toenails, which could be a sign of a fungal infection, don’t apply nail polish to cover up the problem. Nail polish locks out moisture and doesn’t allow the nail bed to “breathe.” Once you fix the underlying issue, then it is safe to paint nails. If the problem persists, be sure to visit your podiatrist. n

and while still raising young children. Mommy Makeover surgery is a combination of surgical procedures surgeons perform to restore a pre-pregnancy appearance to a woman’s body after she’s experienced childbirth and the subsequent physical changes it commonly leaves behind: loose abdominal skin, breasts that appear smaller and less shapely, and excess fat accumulations in the waist, hips, and thighs. It typically includes a tummy tuck to restore a flat, firm look to the abdomen, breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants to add structure and fullness to the breasts, and liposuction to sculpt more ideal waist and/or lower body contours through the removal of stubborn fat. During pregnancy, both the abdominal skin and muscles stretch to accommodate the growing baby. After childbirth, many women are left with loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles, and sagging breasts that no amount of exercise or dieting can reverse. Because the abdominal muscles serve as a type of anatomical compression garment that help to hold the abdomen in, this loss of muscle tone often leads to a tummy bulge that requires surgical repair to flatten and firm its appearance. Choosing the right time in your life is also an important decision. Some women feel they want to wait until after their children are grown to undergo the surgery, while other women want their bodies back immediately and while still raising young children. Whatever your choice is, make sure the surgeon you chose in Board Certified and always ask for testimonials from their former patients. n

Soaking Up the Sun

n entire industry has evolved to help us avoid the sun and the harm it can do to our health. Sunscreen, sunblock, special clothing, eye wear and hats have been researched and designed so our bodies are not exposed to the sun’s rays. These products are marketed to us and pray upon our fears, with good reason…or maybe not. Both forms of ultra violet radiation can damage collagen fibers, destroy vitamin A in our skin, hasten aging of the skin, and increase the risk of skin cancers. UVA radiation penetrates deeply into the skin, where it can contribute to skin cancer. Sunburn is caused by too much UVB radiation; leading to direct DNA damage and promotion of various skin cancers. Excessive sun exposure can also cause cataracts and diseases. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, UVR exposure accounts for only 0.1% of the total global burden of disease. Interestingly enough, in 2006 the World Health Organization (WHO) report noted that a markedly larger annual disease burden of 3.3 billion DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) worldwide might result from very low levels of UVR exposure. “The best-known benefit of sunlight is its ability to boost the body’s vitamin D supply; most cases of vitamin D deficiency are due to lack of outdoor sun exposure. At least 1,000 different genes governing virtually every tissue in the body are now thought to be regulated by 1,25dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25[OH]D), the active form of the vitamin, including several involved in calcium metabolism and neuromuscular and immune system functioning.” Research, published in 2008 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, shows that those with the lowest vitamin D levels more than double

their risk of dying from heart disease, stroke and other causes, compared with those with the highest vitamin D levels. Although many people believe the ultraviolet (UV) light is harmful, our bodies need at least a small amount of UV light in order to function properly. Light has been used for healing since the time of ancient Egypt. Modern scientists began recognizing the benefits of light therapy in the late 1700’s. Sun exposure signals your brain to make feel good chemicals. Serotonin improves mood and helps you wake up. Dopamine stimulates the pleasure center of the brain, and helps you feel energetic and alert. Part of living a healthy life is getting safe and adequate sun exposure. Just as plants cannot survive without exposure to the sun, neither can we. The sun and healthy immune function, skin and hormone production go hand in hand. Listen to your body and use common sense. The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10am and 2pm. Try and time your day to avoid the dangerous rays or protect your skin with clothing, a hat, and sunscreen if you do go outside. Sunscreen prevents sunburn by protecting your skin against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Enjoy the sun wisely! n

Why Try Yoga? T

here are many branches of yoga, a 5,000 year old discipline from India. Regardless of which type you choose, yoga is an excellent way to stretch and strengthen your body, focus your mind, and relax your spirit. No style is better than another; it’s a matter of personal preference. Yoga has been known to increase your flexibility and reduce risk for injury. You can pick and choose which muscles to isolate and which to avoid for health reasons or previous injuries. Yoga can be enjoyed by any age and can be tailored to meet the health needs of most everyone. Yoga can help soothe your mind and lower stress levels by focusing on the movements and the moment, so you avoid external distractions. By focusing on your breathing, you increase your awareness and concentration. More energetic styles of yoga, such as Vinyasa and Ashtanga, stimulate strength and stamina as well as flexibility and relaxation. These may be more effective if your goal is weight loss. Balancing poses require you to employ your core stabilizer muscles, which can help improve overall stability. Yoga positions strengthen and release tight areas of the body, which is necessary for good posture. It is good for overall toning of muscles without weight bearing or impact. If you are considering yoga, speak with your health care professional to be sure it is recommended for you and if there are any limitations. Those limitations should be shared with your instructor so you will get the maximum benefit from the program without injury. n

W

hen you are mindful, you are fully present, in-the-moment without judgment. When it comes to eating, mindfulness helps amplify the volume of your body’s cues so you can hear loud and clear when you are hungry and full. Many social and environmental factors can stand in the way of being able to accurately decode your body’s feedback. Mindfulness helps you break free from routine eating habits by examining the thoughts, feelings and internal pressures that affect how and why you eat (or don’t eat). 1. Shift out of Autopilot Eating What did you have for breakfast? Be honest. Many people eat the same thing day in and day out. Notice whether you are stuck in any kind of rut or routine. 2. Take Mindful Bites Did you ever eat an entire plate of food and not taste one single bite? Bring all of your senses to the dinner table. Breathe in the aroma of a fresh loaf of bread. Notice the texture of yogurt on your tongue. Truly taste your meal. Experience each bite from start to finish. 3. Attentive Eating Sure, you’re busy and have a lot “on your plate.” It’s hard to make eating a priority rather than an option or side task. If you get the urge for a snack while doing your homework or studying, stop and take a break so that you can give eating 100% of your attention.Try to avoid multitasking while you eat. When you eat, just eat. 4. Mindfully Check In How hungry am I on a scale of one to ten? Gauging your hunger level is a little like taking your temperature. Each time you eat, ask yourself, “Am I physically hungry?” Aim to eat until you are satisfied, leaving yourself neither stuffed nor starving.

5.Thinking Mindfully Observe how critical thoughts like “I don’t want to gain the Freshman Fifteen.” or “I’m so stupid, how could I do that!” can creep into your consciousness. Just because you think these thoughts doesn’t mean you have to act on them or let them sway your emotions. Negative thoughts can trigger overeating or stop you from adequately feeding your hunger. Remember: A thought is just a thought, not a fact. 6. Mindful Speech Chit chatting about dieting and fat is so commonplace that we often aren’t truly aware of the impact it might have on our self-esteem. When you are with friends and family, be mindful of your gut reaction to “fat talk” (e.g. “I’m so fat!” or the “I’m so fat; No you’re not” debate). Keep in mind how the words might affect someone struggling with food issues. 7. Mindful Eating Support Friends provide an enormous amount of support, but often it’s helpful to obtain assistance or a second opinion from a trained professional. If you would like to learn more about mindful eating, or if you have concerns about your eating habits, consult the NEDA website www. NationalEatingDisorders.org for information and treatment referrals or call the helpful hotline at 800-931-2237. n

If You’re

HAPPY

and You Know It SATISFACTION WITH LIFE SURVEY

I

f you are happy and you know it take a bow, clap your hands, stamp your feet or however you would like to celebrate. Authors Ed Diener, Robert A. Emmons, Randy J. Larsen and Sharon Griffin wrote an article in the Journal of Personality Assessment in 1985 to measure global cognitive judgments of satisfaction with one’s life. In one minute’s time after responding to 5 questions, you may have a new understanding of how satisfying you see your life to be. Using the 1 – 7 scale below, indicate your agreement with each item by placing the appropriate number on the line preceding that item. Please be open and honest in your responding. 7 - Strongly agree 6 - Agree 5 - Slightly agree 4 - Neither agree nor disagree 3 - Slightly disagree 2 - Disagree 1 - Strongly disagree ____ In most ways my life is close to my ideal. ____ The conditions of my life are excellent. ____ I am satisfied with my life. ____ So far I have gotten the important things I want in life. ____ If I could live my life over, I would change almost nothing. Although this study is almost 30 years old, the questions are broad enough to encompass any time period and location, making it useful anywhere and everywhere. Notice that you are answering the questions about your own life. It is your opinion

of your own happiness that counts. If others perceive you as happy and you do not, in your heart and head you are not satisfied with your life. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is a single scale that is used by UNESCO, the CIA, the New Economics Foundation, the WHO, the Veenhoven Database, the Latinbarometer, the Afrobarometer, and the UNHDR to measure how one views his or her self-esteem, well-being and overall happiness with life. The SWLS is a global measure of life satisfaction. It has been determined that one of the most important influences on happiness is social relationships. People who score high on life satisfaction tend to have close and supportive family and friends, whereas those who do not have close friends and family are more likely to be dissatisfied. According to Live Happy Magazine, another factor that influences the life satisfaction of most people is work or school, or performance is an important role such as homemaker or grandparent. This relates to your goals and your attempt to achieve them. Many find satisfaction with the self, religious or spiritual life, learning and growth, and leisure are a big determining factor of happiness. The explanation of your score was copyrighted by Ed Diener, February 13, 2006 as follows: 30 –35: Very high score, highly satisfied Respondents who score in this range love their lives and feel that things are going very well. Their lives are not perfect, but they feel

that things are about as good as lives get. Furthermore, just because the person is satisfied does not mean she or he is complacent. In fact, growth and challenge might be part of the reason the respondent is satisfied. For most people in this high-scoring range, life is enjoyable, and the major domains of life are going well—work or school, family, friends, leisure and personal development. 25 – 29: High score Individuals who score in this range like their lives and feel that things are going well. Of course their lives are not perfect, but they fell that things are mostly good. The person may draw motivation from the areas of dissatisfaction. 20 – 24: Average score The average of life satisfaction in economically developed nations is in this range—the majority of people are generally satisfied, but have some areas where they very much would like some improvement. Simple Self Help – Get Organized!

W

e all know somebody who struggles through life incapable of organizing anything, including themselves. Being organized is an essential part of life, and it is easier than you think to become more organized. Organization is a huge banner which covers dozens of areas in our lives. It isn`t just a case of being tidy and having a place for everything, it’s also making sure that you make all your appointments on time, prioritizing your workload so you aren`t swamped and running a home efficiently, making sure that the laundry is done and the bills are paid on time. The first step to having an organized life is to have an organized mind. The inability to concentrate makes it impossible for your brain to be organized, and this carries on into other aspects of your life. If life is a constant struggle as you battle to keep on top of things and invariably fail, you have a disorganized mind, and this is where we are going to start. Most people blame their disorganization on having a bad memory; the fact is that they just haven`t concentrated in the first place and no one can remember something that they haven’t mentally digested. Get yourself a pocket calendar and some different colored sticky notes. As soon as you get an appointment write it in the diary, and check this

diary daily. Stick notes up around the house for things such as shopping, picking up the dry cleaning and even picking up the kids. Write down every bill that has to be paid on a note and stick it up somewhere you will see it easily. Tick them off as you pay them and when they are all done, throw the note away and do the same the next month. Organizing a household is really organizing your time effectively. The laundry and dishes are never going to be done if you sit watching TV all the time. No one can function in a chaotic and cluttered household so take a deep breathe and take a good look around you. Stop putting things off until later; by getting everything done and out of the way will mean that when you do have your relaxation time, it really will be relaxing as that nagging little voice won’t keep reminding you of the things that you should be doing. You are not superman or woman; if there are a few people in the house, delegate tasks to everyone and tell them it is time for them to pull their weight. They may grumble at first, but when they see the difference in both the appearance and the ambience of the home they will see things differently. At work, it’s vitally important to keep your work space organized. There will no doubt be a mountain of stuff that should have gone into the trash ages ago, so make the effort and go in 30 minutes earlier and have a good sort out. This can have a great effect on how you function and you may well find yourself doing the same at home and getting rid of stuff that should have gone months ago. As long as you have an organized mind, you can easily have an organized life. Don’t think these ordered people have some special gift; they haven’t, they’ve just learned the key skills to keeping their life in order, and soon you will too. n

Friends in the Fridge F

orget the food pyramid and most of what we grew up thinking healthy eating was. This generation is learning all about the nutritional powerhouses that help build bones, prevent chronic diseases, improve your vision, and sharpen your mind. Better yet, most of us already have some of these unexpected friends in our refrigerator or pantry. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, these berries are also high in potassium and vitamin C. Not only can they lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, they are also anti-inflammatory. A diet high in fiber will help you maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Beans of all shapes and sizes are great sources of fiber, protein, and healthy fats andflavonoids—antioxidants that help your arteries stay relaxed and pliable. Dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. Look for chocolate with 60% or higher cocoa content; the darker, the better. Broccoli, whether cooked or raw, is well-known for its cancer-preventing powers. Better yet, you get great fiber in less than 30 calories a serving. Brown rice contains resistant starch, a healthy carb that boosts metabolism and burns fat. This is a low-energy-density food, meaning it’s heavy and filling but low in calories. It is a top source of magnesium, a mineral your body uses for more than 300 chemical reactions. Grapefruits contain a compound which can lower insulin, a fat-storage hormone, and is a good source of protein. Purple foods contain anthocyanins, which are health-promoting chemicals. They help protect cells and heal your body. Research suggests they play active roles in promoting eye and heart health, decreasing cancer cell proliferation and more. Include purple fruits and vegetables into your diet at least 4-5 days a week along with dark green, orange and yellow foods for maximum benefits. These food do double duty; they are healthy and look great on a plate. n

On Closer Inspection…the Truth about Food I

f something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Many times something looks good enough to eat, but when you read the ingredients, you would opt to use it as a household cleanser. Remember the fast food chain that was busted for adding azodicarbonamide, a chemical found in yoga mats and shoe soles, to lower the cost of their bread? There is a list on the internet that covers 130 brands of breads, buns, snacks, pastries and pre-made sandwiches which use it too. Here is some food for thought: · Are you buying cheese or processed ‘pasteurized cheese snack’? · Is that real vanilla or chocolate or artificial flavor and color? · Is that crème filling or a blend of oils, artificial flavors, sugar and words you can’t pronounce? · Is that peanut butter or peanut flavored unhealthy oil with added sugars? · Is that orange juice or water, high fructose corn syrup, sugar and less that 2% of orange juice? It is time to be an educated consumer, which means you need to learn to read the labels, not just for the calorie count and percentage of fat. Read the ingredients and if you don’t think it belongs in the food, you certainly don’t want to eat it. The more processed a food, the longer the ingredient list is. Chances are the less expensive alternative may be the least healthy. Restaurants are a great convenience, but you will not know what is in their food that looks, smells and tastes so good. Don’t forget those reading glasses and leave an extra 30 minutes of reading time on your next trip to the supermarket! n

Reasons to Be GLUTEN-FREE G

luten-free products are consuming more and more real estate on supermarket shelves these days. Who needs to eat gluten-free and why? There is a disease that affects at least 1 in 133 people in America called Celiac Disease, also known as gluten intolerance. Symptoms of celiac disease in adults can range from diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition, to latent symptoms such as isolated nutrient deficiencies but no gastrointestinal symptoms. Up to 75 percent of children with celiac disease are overweight or obese. Digestive signs and symptoms are experienced by 20 to 30 percent of children with the condition although the precise signs and symptoms differ by age. Eventually, your brain, nervous system, bones, liver and other organs can be deprived of vital nourishment.

The disease is a reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in certain foods listed below. Eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. This reaction will eventually produce inflammation that damages the small intestine’s lining and prevents absorption of some nutrients (malabsorption). Celiac disease tends to run in families. While these symptoms are also caused by viruses and other medical issues, it is recommended to be tested if they persist longer than two weeks. There is no cure as of yet. A gluten-free diet is essential and the only treatment for managing celiac disease. Let your doctor test you prior to starting a gluten-free diet as it may impact results. In addition to wheat, foods that contain gluten include: · Barley

· Malt

· Bulgur

· Rye

· Durum

· Semolina

· Farina

· Spelt (a form of wheat)

· Graham flour

· Triticale n

satisfied with most areas of their lives but they see the need for some improvement in each area. Other respondents score in this range because they are satisfied with most domains of their lives, but have one or two areas where they would like to see large improvements. A person scoring in this range is normal in that they have areas of their lives that need improvement. However, an individual in this range would usually like to move to a higher level by making some life changes. 15 – 19: Slightly below average in life satisfaction People who score in this range usually have small but significant problems in several areas of their lives, or have many areas that are doing fine but one area that represents a substantial problem for them. If a person has moved temporarily into this level of life satisfaction from a higher level because of some recent event, things will usually improve over time and satisfaction will generally move back up. On the other hand, if a person is chronically slightly dissatisfied with many areas of life, some changes might be in order. Sometimes the person is simply expecting too much, and sometimes life changes are needed. Thus, although temporary 32

ASK THE DOCTOR

Summer 2014

dissatisfaction is common and normal, a chronic level of dissatisfaction across a number of areas of life calls for reflection. Some people can gain motivation from a small level dissatisfaction, but often dissatisfaction across a number of life domains is a distraction, and unpleasant as well. 10 – 14: Dissatisfied People who score in this range are substantially dissatisfied with their lives. People in this range may have a number of domains that are not going well, or one or two domains that are doing very badly. If life dissatisfaction is a response to a recent event such as bereavement, divorce, or a significant problem at work, the person will probably return over time to his or her former level of higher satisfaction. However, if low levels of life satisfaction have been chronic for the person, some changes are in order—both in attitudes and patterns of thinking, and probably in life activities as well. Low levels of life satisfaction in this range, if they persist, can indicate that things are going badly and life alterations are needed. Furthermore, a person with low life satisfaction in this range is sometimes not functioning well because their unhappiness serves as a distraction. Talking to a friend, member of the clergy, counselor, or

other specialist can often help the person get moving in the right direction, although positive change will be up to the person. 5 – 9: Extremely Dissatisfied Individuals who score in this range are usually extremely unhappy with their current life. In some cases this is in reaction to some recent bad event such as widowhood or unemployment. In other cases, it is a response to a chronic problem such as alcoholism or addiction. In yet other cases the extreme dissatisfaction is a reaction due to something bad in life such as recently having lost a loved one. However, dissatisfaction at this level is often due to dissatisfaction in multiple areas of life. Whatever the reason for the low level of life satisfaction, it may be that the help of others are needed—a friend or family member, counseling with a member of the clergy, or help from a psychologist or other counselor. If the dissatisfaction is chronic, the person needs to change, and often others can help. The Satisfaction with Life Index was created by Adrian G. White, in an attempt to show life satisfaction in different nations. The results are both surprising and fascinating, you would never believe where the grass may be greener. n

elery is one of those vegetables that get taken for granted. Let’s get up close and personal. Most of the plant is usable, the stalks as a crisp vegetable to be eaten raw or cooked, the leaves as a flavoring or dried as an herb, and the seeds as a spice. Celery has been used medicinally since 30AD. Celery seeds contain a compound, 3-n-butylphthalide, that has been demonstrated to lower blood pressure in rats. Celery has anti-inflammatory health benefits, including its protection against inflammation in the digestive tract itself. Scientists have identified at least a dozen other types of antioxidant nutrients in celery. Celery contains pectin-based polysaccharides that can provide the stomach with special benefits. There are cardiovascular benefits of celery as oxidative stress and inflammation in the bloodstream are critical problems in the development of many cardiovascular diseases. Celery is used in weight-loss diets, as it provides low-calorie dietary fiber bulk. One cup contains only 16 calories. It has that great crunch factor and is the perfect shape to use as a healthy vehicle to hold your favorite dips. Nutrients change when stored and refrigerated, they recommend a period of 5-7 days for consuming fresh celery. Wait to cut up your celery until just before you are adding it to a salad or cooked dish to preserve its maximum nutrient potential. Researchers have compared the impact of steaming (10 minutes) versus boiling (10 minutes) versus blanching (3 minute submersion in boiling water) on the total phenolic antioxidant nutrients in celery. You can steam celery without having to worry about excessive loss of its phenol-based antioxidants; 83-99% of these antioxidants were retained. Both boiling and blanching resulted in substantial loss of these antioxidants, in the range of 38-41%. Pick up some celery and munch away guilt free! n

Arthritis in Our Elders

rthritis is actually an umbrella term as there are many different kinds of arthritis; each with different symptoms and treatments. Most types of arthritis are chronic. Half of all people age 65 and older are troubled by this disease. The warning signs that you might have some form of arthritis if you have lasting joint pain, joint swelling or stiffness, tenderness or pain when touching a joint, problems using or moving a joint normally, or warmth and redness in a joint. If any one of these symptoms lasts longer than 2 weeks, it is time to see your doctor. Each kind of arthritis is handled a little differently. There are some shared treatment choices such as rest, exercise, and eating a healthy and well-balanced diet. Patients need to learn the right way to use and protect their joints. Wearing the right shoes and a cane can help with pain in the feet, knees, and hips when walking to avoiding injuries and maintaining comfort. Nowadays you can find great gizmos and gadgets to help in your day to day activities; they can help pull zippers, others help to button a shirt, and still others can help open jars or extend a person’s reach, thereby putting less stress on joints. Doctors can recommend medications to relieve pain and stiffness. Exercise is a good way to stay fit, keep muscles strong, and control arthritis symptoms. Daily exercise, such as walking or swimming, helps keep joints moving, lessens pain, and makes muscles around the joints

stronger. Range-of-motion exercises, strengthening exercises, Aerobic or endurance exercises should be considered with medical supervision. Your doctor will let you know which is the best type of exercise to pursue for your condition. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has a free 80-page booklet on how to start and stick with a safe exercise program as well as a 48-minute companion video. Some symptoms of arthritis can be manufactured or exasperated by certain foods. When this occurs the person is said to have food sensitivity. When identified, the food can be removed from the patient’s diet after which time the symptoms will most likely either be diminished or eliminated. Saturated fats can also have an adverse effect on arthritis symptoms. Lowering the saturated fat content in their diet can radically diminish the inflammation that they have in their joints. Reducing weight will alleviate some of the stress on joints too. Many sufferers find relief in applying either heat or cold, or both, sequentially. Heat can be applied with a warm pack, a warm bath, electric heating pad or blanket, warm lamp, or hydro collator pack; all of which help relax the muscles. Other ways of making things warm and soothing are to use flannel sheets, raise the thermostat, or heat up clothes in the dryer for a minute or two before putting them on. Communication is key; be aware of their symptoms and treatment and alert their medical professional to any changes to be sure your loved one is getting the best possible care. n

Is It a Stroke?

A

ccording to the National Institute of Health, each year in the United States, approximately 795,000 people have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes. On average, one American dies from stroke every four minutes. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, and causes more serious long-term disabilities than any other disease. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65. And the risk of having a stroke more than doubles each decade between the ages of 55 and 85. A stroke occurs when a clot blocks the blood flow to the brain. The brain cells in the immediate area begin to die because they stopped getting the oxygen and the nutrients they need to function. Other brain cells are damaged by sudden bleeding into or around the brain. The brain cells that don’t die immediately remain at risk for death. These are warning signs of a stroke: • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes or double vision • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Sudden severe headache with no known cause • Drowsiness • Nausea or vomiting There are new treatments that greatly reduce the damage caused by a stroke, but the sooner you arrive at the hospital the better opportunities you will have to prevent disability and improve your chances of recovery. If you suspect a stroke, call 911 immediately, and get to a hospital as quickly as possible. n
