TROPHY HUNTING BAN DROPPED

GTN GOES FULLY DIGITAL Printed copies to cease from next issue

King’s Speech makes no mention of the proposed legislation After what many saw as a successful campaign to derail it in the House Of Lords, the private members bill seeking to ban the import of Hunting Trophies introduced by Henry Smith (Con) has been dropped from the legislative programme. Confirmation came in the King’s Speech, with no mention made of the proposed legislation, signalling that it would not be implemented in this parliament. Some conservationists and pro-hunting groups hailed its removal as a great success, with GTN columnist Diggory Hadoke telling Shooting Times: “The entire political debate has leaned heavily on emotive and hysterical overreach by animal rights lobbyists and misguided tabloid media campaigns, which seem to exist in a bubble of wilful ignorance of the fact that sustainable sport hunting is the best conservation model in many countries and the only one in some.” However, those animal rights lobbyists were disappointed in the outcome, the following being typical of their responses: “As long as we accept the idea

that the only way to protect wildlife is to allow the rich to visit other countries and pay to torment and kill its native wildlife, alternative solutions… will continue to be overlooked,” argued Tricia Croasdell, World Animal Protection.

There remains the possibility that the legislation will be picked up in another parliament, but for now the threat seems to have passed. Turn to page 32 for the current legislative state of play with all the threats facing the trade.

MORE DEBANKING SCANDALS BASC names Barclays as antagonist in two cases The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) says it has been informed of more than two dozen debanking incidents involving at least 15 financial service companies, as reported by GTN columnist Conor O’Gorman in Shooting Times. Conor reported that a pattern was emerging for Barclays Bank, and that two shooting businesses wanted to share their stories with ST readers. Northall Clay Pigeon Club in East Sussex had banked with Barclays for many years without any issues, until one day in September they suddenly lost access to their online banking services. It transpired that Barclays had closed their business account. Bank staff asserted that a letter had been sent to the club, though none was reported to have been received. When a copy of this letter was pro-

vided, it contained no explanation other than it was a “difficult decision” to make. Mill Farm Clay Pigeon Club, also in East Sussex, saw their Barclays partnership business account suddenly shut down with no notice in December last year. The first they knew of this was being unable to access online banking.

Northall and Mill Farm clay pigeon clubs have since opened new accounts with Lloyds Bank. But these are not the only cases. Barclays is sending account holders forms to complete to prove their identity and the activities of their business or club. This can be a very invasive and timeconsuming process, and can involve inappropriate

Our legal eagle’s advice for potential business partners

Enjoy the latest issue of Gun Trade News. Sadly it will be the last to be printed. But that does not mean the end for your favourite magazine. Instead the future is bright and digital. We will continue to produce a monthly magazine, with the same quantity and quality of editorial, together with more newsletters and social media posting. The only difference will be that the end product will be purely digital. Richard Hease, Chairman of GTN’s publisher Stable Events said: “This marks the start of an exciting new journey for Gun Trade News, one that we hope will make it a fit-for-purpose media asset for the digital age. We look forward to working with all our partners to make sure we carry on delivering the information you need to conduct your business, and to take GTN to the next level.” To make sure of your subscription, please visit the Gun Trade News website—guntradenews .com—and follow the subscribe signposting. threats to close accounts and sudden actual unexplained closures. Whether Barclays is specifically targeting the shooting sector with these reviews is unclear, but it seems they are clearly not acting fairly and are potentially in breach of existing rules and regulations, based on what BASC has seen. BASC is supporting a number of live cases involving Barclays, and the Financial Ombudsman Service is currently investigating one case. The Financial Conduct Authority continues its review into banking services and BASC intends to submit further evidence to that. If you have been impacted, please email conor .ogorman@basc.org.uk

Chris Packham settles libel action against Fieldsports TV Environmental campaigner and naturalist Chris Packham has been paid “substantial” damages by the online shooting and hunting channel Fieldsports Channel after it falsely accused him of writing a fake death threat letter to himself. In June 2022, Fieldsports Channel and one of its journalists, Ben O’Rourke, published an online video and article alleging that Mr Packham had written a fake death threat letter to himself and lied about it being sent by an anonymous third party. The allegation was not put to Mr Packham directly to offer him the right of reply. Of particular concern to Mr Packham was the implication that he had lied to his family and Hampshire Police about the death threat. His distress was compounded by Fieldsports Channel’s response to his claim, in particular mounting caricatures of his head on a “trophy wall” at the British Shooting Show in February 2023. Mr Packham has been the victim of arson attacks and has received numerous death threats, and he considers Fieldsports Channel’s ac-

New MF series 40mm silencers from BRK

BRK has announced that its two new MF series 40mm silencers are now with UK dealers. These are the quietest silencers BRK has ever made, eclipsing the performance of many existing and more expensive custom brands. Priced to sell, the MF170mm and MF 121mm are suitable for any air rifle fitted with an industry stan-

tions to have been utterly reckless and irresponsible in that context. Mr Packham settled the defamation claim after Fieldsports Channel admitted that the death threat claims were untrue. According to Fieldsports Channel co-founder Charlie Jacoby, Mr Packham will receive £30,000 in damages, paid in three installments. Mr Packham said: “Fieldsports TV displayed a complete contempt of even the basic codes of real journalism. They allowed a vicious vendetta to drive a targeted catalogue of lies in an attempt to destroy my credibility, integrity and reputation.” Mr Jacoby claims, however, that Mr Packham actually sued the wrong company. Had he sued Fieldsports TV Limited, rather than Fieldsports Channel Limited, the damages awarded him may have been significantly higher. “Chris hasn’t killed us,” said Mr Jacoby. “He has not ended Fieldsports Channel, which is marvellous. We will continue to shine a light where Chris does not want us to share a light.”

dard ½-in UNF thread and are in .177 (4.5mm) and .22 (5.5mm) calibre. The MF170mm is the long version designed for ultimate silencing and use on shorter rifles such as bull-pup designs and carbines. The MF 121 is the short version, intended to complement longer full length rifles. Both silencers have 40mm diameters which makes them super effective in cutting muzzle noise. This is the perfect accessory for any airgun shooter wishing to make as little muzzle noise as possible. Go to brocock.co.uk for more details.

London gunmaker John Rigby & Co. has appointed Zoltán Boros to its art department. Hailing from Subotica, Serbia, Zoltán is known for his passion for wildlife and his exceptional talent in capturing the beauty and essence of the natural world. His artistic journey began during his secondary school years, when he developed an affinity for hunting and hunting-themed art. Over the years, he has become renowned for his captivating works, predominantly centred around native European wildlife. Zoltán has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Golden Brush-Pen Award and the Peter Balogh Grand Prize for Art. His fascination with the interplay of line and tone in graphic

art has led him to create masterful works characterised by elegance, simplicity and a profound understanding of anatomy. To celebrate this exciting collaboration, Zoltán has created seven stunning limited edition prints, each priced at £75.

Master West

The Executive Director of the GTA, Simon West OBE, has taken on an additional role. Effective immediately, Simon is the new Master of the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. Simon’s appointment was confirmed at a dinner held on 7 November at Mansion House, where over 250 collected liverymen and guests witnessed the previous Master, Rowlie McBeath, hand over the Master’s badge of office and keys to the Proof House. The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers was established in 1673, and still performs a statutory duty to test and regulate the safety of firearms via the proof process. Simon said: “It is a huge honour to be appointed Master for the coming year. The Company has a long history at the heart of the gun trade and is rare among City livery companies, doing what it was set up to do by King Charles I. We still prove

guns and we provide support to the craft through bursaries for apprentices and qualifications for gunmaking and gunsmithing. I further intend to use this year to represent the gun trade’s interests at the highest levels. Banking, licensing, transport and politics are all on my agenda.” If you want to know more about the Company and joining its ranks, go to gunmakers.org.uk

Facebook Racism Row

Last month, James Purdey & Sons, the high-end British gun specialist, posted an image on Facebook as part of a new marketing campaign for their line of outdoor wear, which included a black model. Purdey’s attempt to add diversity to a predominantly white, male-dominated industry should be lauded. However, comments posted on the Facebook image were heavily racially motivated. These comments were promptly deleted. Leon Challis-Davies, culinary director for British Game Assurance, told Shooting Times: “It’s a very sorry state of affairs to hear that individuals within the country still hold these views on minorities. This is not banter. This is racism. We need the industry to be aware of these individuals and make them accountable, point them out, report them. “What I saw was an innovative advert featuring a black man in shooting attire, modelling for Purdey. It’s good to be pushing boundaries and sending a positive message to other country brands that haven’t yet made that step. I believe the fieldsports community is an inclusive one but it’s a disgrace that a few individuals bring the sector back to the Stone Age.” Regular GTN columnist Al Gabriel added: “It is shameful behaviour that does not represent the views of the shooting community. Progress has been made in improving diversity in shooting, but this is further evidence that more needs to be done. Brands need to incorporate diversity in their promotional material. Therefore, brands must continue to promote diversity and not be discouraged by the actions of a few.” Dan Jago, managing director of James Purdey & Sons, told ST: “At Purdey, we have zero tolerance for racism or harassment of any kind and reserve the right to remove comments that do not align with our values and community management guidelines.”

Airgun World is published by Fieldsports Press and is available for wholesale from Seymour on 0207 429 4000

This particular rifle is the culmination years of expertise from the guys at The Airgun Centre and of course, Daystate, hence the exclusive pairing. Between them they have come up with a unique variant of the extremely popular Wolverine, and you’ve got to admit that it certainly looks the part. There are subtle reminders everywhere that this is a Limited Edition Sapphire, with etchings on the action and engraving on the stock at the base of the pistol grip, which really add to the rifle’s general good looks. Apart from the aesthetics, the Sapphire’s stock is an extremely functional ergonomically designed

one. It is truly ambidextrous and I love the discreet thumb rest immediately above the top of the pistol grip, it just makes shooting it so much more comfortable There’s a slim, lightweight 200cc bottle attached underneath the barrel, and this is shrouded in a lightweight, heavy-duty synthetic material, which also has a Picatinny rail moulded into it at the end to take a bipod. It more than passed the ‘Dave B Rattle Test’ and trust me when I tell you that this thing is solid and doesn’t move a millimetre. I spent a good couple of hours on my back garden range, basically ‘plinking’ at paper and knock-downs, but

I soon got bored with that—this rifle is so accurate I found myself needing to test myself a bit more, and that meant heading to a longer range. After re-zeroing at 30 metres I set to work on the 40-yard spinners, then gradually pushed my way out to the 50-metre knock-downs, and it really didn’t take too long for me to become acquainted with the MTC scope and the holdover points I required for said distances. Sure, I missed a few like we all do, but I was hitting way more than I missed at that extreme distance with this lovely rifle. Not only is this rifle a real collector’s item, but it’s profoundly functional, to boot!

Caesar Guerini Maxum Hybrid 20-bore

GUN TEST

While it might be priced for the more serious Shot, the Maxum Hybrid offers the best of game and Sporter models, writes Jonny Carter Who doesn’t love a sub-gauge gun? They are just more fun. I can feel those who revel in traditional English gun trade parlance wince and call out, “It’s called a small bore!” But I feel that wording is just less exciting than that of our American cousins. I have played with the Maxum Game in 12bore and a fair few 20-bore Guerinis, but this is the first time I have shot the Maxum Hybrid, and it’s in a 20-bore. The Hybrid is just as it sounds, somewhere between a game gun and a Sporter, with the barrels and action of a game gun but and the woodwork of the Sporter. I’m lucky to get to shoot a lot of different guns and some take much more learning that others, especially as you roll down through the bores. This one moved like a good competition 12bore, oddly familiar handling but without being 8lb 6oz. As much as I praise the weight of this gun, I am aware that this will be a downside for some. However, if you’re using this in conjunction with a 12 as your main guns, then the saving is still significant.

ACTION AND BARRELS Looks very top-drawer

Shooting Times is published by Fieldsports Press and is available for wholesale from Seymour on 0207 429 4000

CONCLUSION Who is this gun for? I would say people who want to shoot driven game to a decent standard, who will appreciate its handling characteristics and who also want to crush it round a clay course without changing guns. This gun is £5,495 so is definitely priced for the more serious shooter, but I do think it stands up against the competition.

Reximex Lyra

GUN TEST

Mat Manning gets to grips with an airgun that strikes an impressive balance

Airgun World is published by Fieldsports Press and is available for wholesale from Seymour on 0207 429 4000

NEED TO KNOW

It looks like Reximex is rewriting the rule book for pre-charged airgun pricing and performance. The common opinion has been that you have to spend big money or make serious compromises on performance, but guns like this are tipping those preconceptions on their head. The Reximex Lyra, distributed in the UK by Range Right, has a recommended retail price of just £375, which is remarkably good value for a

multi-shot PCP. Apart from being so affordable, it shoots very well, and it’s a really nice-looking gun – traditionally styled with a sleek modern twist. Output from the Lyra was 11.2 ft.lbs. with Rangemaster Kaiser pellets. Consistency remained within seven feet per second over a string of 10 shots. Power can be adjusted down to a minimum output of 6.5 ft.lbs., via the dial positioned just in front of the magazine slot. I don’t know many

shooters who want to wind down the power on sub12 airguns, but it’s a feature that could prove handy for plinking in smaller gardens.

NEED TO KNOW

Digital day-and-night optics have never been so accessible. Not so long ago, £2,000 would buy you a heavy scope that was complicated to operate, produced a soft, grainy image, and went through batteries at an alarming rate. Things have come a long way. Digital riflescopes are much more affordable, far easier to operate, and deliver image quality that can rival some traditional glass optics. The new InfiRay Tube TD70L V2, is a great example. Shaped like a normal telescopic sight, it weighs less than a kilo, is simple to operate and is listed at £799.99 on the Scott Country website. Features include an on-board rechargeable battery that gives a runtime of up to nine hours as well as video recording to an integral 32GB memory.

The InfiRay Tube TD70L V2 has 5.5x optical magnification, going up to 22x with digital zoom, which suggests it’s capable of more than potting bunnies at mid-range. I used it at seven and 8x for most of my shooting, which provided sufficient detail for precise shot placement, while the picture remained sharp and free from any obvious pixelation. Out in the fields, the rabbits proved more skittish than those closer to the yard. Windless conditions with very little ambient noise made it easy for them to hear me, and I had several failed stalks before accounting for the third and final rabbit of the night. It certainly wasn’t a bumper night on the bunnies, but the InfiRay Tube TD70L V2 still gave a very good account of itself, enabling me to make

the most of the few opportunities I encountered. If you are tempted to make the switch to a digital day-and-night scope but have been put off by high prices and complicated controls, you would do well to give this one a try. You could be in for a very pleasant surprise.

Store of the Month

DRAPERS GUN CENTRE LTD For this issue’s Store of the Month we travel to Nottingham to meet Rebecca Draper, proprietor of Drapers Gun Centre Ltd NEED TO KNOW n YEAR ESTABLISHED: 1975 n ANNUAL TURNOVER: N/A n NUMBER OF STAFF: Four

Left to right: Rebecca, Josh and Karen What year was the shop established? The shop was established here in the same location as today back in 1975 under the name PJ Draper and Son. Initially my grandfather sold fruit and veg and a few electricals. As for the airguns, my father remembers when he was about 13 or 14 he placed an advert in the local paper saying he wanted to purchase an air rifle. Four people came forward with them for sale. My grandad bought them all. Dad chose one and the remaining three went in the window and all sold. That’s where it all began. We became a limited company in 2002. Drapers Airgun Centre. Then after lockdown we became Drapers Gun Centre and now I am the sole proprietor of the shop. Number of staff? There’s Josh, my floor manager, Ethan our whizz kid, and Josh’s mum, Karen. She came to help us during Covid and now we couldn’t be without her. We also have a part time gunsmith for servicing and any repairs but we like to think we have very few issues with any of our guns. The one member of staff you couldn’t live without and why… That’s definitely my dad. He does so much behind the scenes. As well as being my mentor, he’s my best friend and made me into the person I am today. Tell us a little more about yourself, and why you’re running a gun shop. Tell us what your passions are… I almost wasn’t running the business at all. When my father was thinking about retiring I had just moved back to England from working in Spain. The shop was really the last thing on my mind but mum argued with my dad about taking me on and basically he ended up giving me a job. He wasn’t sure about

“ The airsoft department was set

up just before Covid. Josh and Ethan enjoy the sport ” it at first. Both for my sake and the shop. It’s fair to say it’s worked out really well and I’m so grateful to him. Although he’s in Andorra now, he’s still very much there for me and in the background. He’s extremely helpful with the accounts and consulting when I need him. My favourite thing in the world to do is shotgun shooting! What has been the most successful product (or area) for you in the past year? We offer everyone a great Stoeger XM1 beginners’ package. It’s great to think that for less than £300 we can provide someone with a full PCP set up. We like to offer people things for less than £300 because we know that is what tends to grow the market. Another hugely successful product for us is the CP2. We are offering a delivery service which is rapidly growing. What’s your clientele like? Obviously airgun enthusiasts, but we don’t allow children under the age of 18 in on their own. Everyone is buzzed in and out the shop but metaphorically the door is always open because we truly believe that you need the knowledge in person. We have a huge range of clientele from passers-by to farmers and shooters throughout the UK. We have recently started doing airsoft. That is bringing people in. Being Midlands-based is useful for us business-wise and even better for our customers’ It means that less of them have to travel far. The

airsoft department was set up just before Covid. Josh and Ethan enjoy the sport and it’s growing in popularity. I set it up because I think it’s important to support your staff and play to their strengths. What was your best day ever? There’s been two and the second couldn’t have happened without the first. The day my dad made me a director was the best day ever. A close second was being approached to become a director of the Gun Trade Association. It is such an honour to be a voice in the trade, sitting and representing them. There is a lot more to be positive about than people realise and its just about spreading that message. Who’s your best customer? I have two customers that are in their 80s now. They remember the shop from years ago, almost my grandfather’s time. One is called Jim, the other Ben. They don’t know each other but they each light up my day and I’m so pleased to see them. We have hot chocolate and lovely chats. What’s your funniest or most memorable story about a customer? Well, someone came in once with an air rifle that wasn’t quite behaving. We took it out the back and removed eight inches of lead out of the barrels. Eight inches! They couldn’t believe it and nor could we.

They must have kept reloading for quite some time. That was quite a day. It all keeps us in business, I suppose. What do you anticipate will be the biggest trends for the next year? The air rifle side will keep booming and I would imagine FAC rifles will too. I’m also expecting big things from the airsoft side of things. We are now selling lots of cartridges now that people know we stock them. When you order stock, what’s the first thing you put down? Again that’s probably the Stoegers or the CP2. We are always ordering pellets and accessories though. Any other interesting facts about the business? We have four bomb shelters under the shop that we use as storage. A lot of my dad’s electrical stuff is still under here. The shop above is literally ten times the size compared to when we first started. What’s the best thing for you about working in a gun shop? The people, the staff, the industry. Impossible to say but I do love it. I have made so many close friends who work in this trade through my work. GTN

SIDELOCK AND BOXLOCK VALUE

Bonhams

Bonhams catalogue is open for viewing at bonhams .com and includes a number of deactivated military pistols, rifles and machine guns. The sale is on November 23rd in Knightsbridge. Early Purdey sidelock non-ejectors are not easy to find. Bonhams had three, all in need of work, but all are expected to make under £3,000. Each will

Bonhams: A pair of 1992 KC Hunt engraved and golddecorated, 12-bore, self-opening sidelock ejector guns by James Purdey & Sons, estimate £150,000 give an entry-level Purdey ownership opportunity to someone out there. Ejectors are less useful than most people imagine, unless they are shooting very big, fast-fire-requiring driven days. I like these early guns. They have a character of their own. Also, omitting ejectors from the gun removes a possible source of trouble later. Bonhams had a pretty impressive list of high-end pairs by Purdey, Holland & Holland and Boss. The top lot in financial terms, as well as ‘bling’, was a

the Sealed Bids Auction on 7th December. Everything is now online and bidding can be done from the comfort of your desk. The sealed bids auction is always worth looking through carefully as there is little doubt in my mind that a lot of people get ‘snow blinded’ by the sheer volume of kit listed. I have had some very nice buys from it over the years. This time I noted three Rigby .275 rifles from the 1920s, very reasonably priced. Of course, the frus-

pair of Purdeys made in 1992 and engraved, with profuse gold coverage, by Ken Hunt. The estimate reached £150,000 plus commission. That sounds like a huge amount of money, but in today’s terms it represents the price of one, new, scrollengraved, Purdey sidelock from Audley House.

Southams

Southams have a sale in Bedford on December 7th and a follow-up in Newnham Street on December 9th. We don’t know much about this yet, but the catalogue should be online by the time we go to print at southamsauction.co.uk

Holts

Holts hold their three sales back to back, with Fine Modern & Antique Arms on November 27th, Modern Sporting Guns & Rifles the following day, and

tration of the sealed bid is that you have no idea what the next bid will be. If you want something you have to put a hefty bid on just to be sure. In fact, you are never in control and have to leave it to fate once you have put in what you think is reasonable. You don’t want to miss something for want of an extra fiver, but you also do not want to beat your nearest rival by £300 on a £500 rifle. The other thing about sealed bids at Holts is that it often has the weird and wonderful. If you want a cannon and have the means to remove it, of course Holts have a cannon for sale. Expect to bid over £1,500 if you need one! In the main sale there were two vintage Mannlicher-Schönauer rifles re-barrelled to .243 Winchester by Daniel Fraser. Perhaps not everyone’s idea of the ideal stalking rifle but the cost of conversion (and restocking in one case) would have been more than the

asking prices for the rifles. They would have been 6.5 x 54 originally and the .243 is a modern, easily available deer-legal round, rather than an out of production veteran. Few good hammer guns seem to be featured these days, there were only seven at Holts this time. The pick of them perhaps was a Daw. The Daw ‘Central Fire Gun’ is an icon of the era. It brought Schneider’s patent to Britain in 1862 and ended the pin-fire as a system of ignition thereafter. It is the first iteration of all modern centre-fire shotguns in use today. Every serious collection needs one. This one looked good but it has been Teague lined. Teague lining was heralded as the saviour of Damascus barrels when it was introduced about 15 years ago. By slipping a full-length liner into the barrel, but keeping the external skin of original barrel, it resurrected many scrap guns that were externally pretty but badly pitted. Unfortunately, the job proved unsatisfactory longterm. The new and old materials sometimes reacted badly to one another and the glue that held the new liners in place did not always adhere indefinitely. As barrels warm and cool, the old and new metals react slightly differently, causing deviations and slippage. Finally, any dent or damage was impossible to repair as the new barrels were essentially a sandwich and the knocking out of dents in the traditional manner did not work. With a modest estimate of £500-£700, the Daw might be worth a punt, and observation of how well the barrels hold up, some 16 years after being lined, would be interesting to commentators like me. In a catalogue full of expensive shotguns, sometimes the unusual is what stands out. I spotted a .22 (Short) version of the Model 1873 Winchester. This dated from around 1886 and is one of only 2,000 ever built. It was estimated at £600-£800, but I expect it to net a good deal more than that. I will be at several viewings this cycle, so perhaps I’ll meet up with a reader or two there. GTN

LATE November and December always get congested as everyone rushes to get business concluded and pack up for Christmas. Notable sales during the period include Holts, Southams, Bonhams, Gavin Gardiner, Wilson 55 and Lonsdales. All the sales included a good spread of guns and rifles in their catalogues. Some were notable. Gavin Gardiner featured a 1968 Boss & Co. 16bore, round bodied, sidelock ejector, with assisted opening action. A lightweight gun, at 6lbs, and cased with all accessories. The estimate of £8,000-£12,000 shows what incredible value English sidelocks can be in today’s market. To have this built today would cost in excess of £150,000 plus VAT. Gavin describes the gun as “very little used”. It retains virtually all the original finish. Boxlocks continue to be incredible value. A pair of Joseph Lang 12-bore boxlocks in very original condition, also little used, were estimated at £3,000£5,000. Like the sidelock Boss, the replacement cost for new guns would be multiples of that figure. They are almost ‘as new’, with 2 3/4-inch chambers and 28-inch barrels. Collector interest guns in less than original condition are worthwhile searching out. They often fill a place in a collection until something better becomes available. Or, they may simply be the only option where rare guns are concerned. Theophilus Murcott is thought to have built only about 200 examples of his game-changing, 1871 patent, ‘Mousetrap’ gun. This was the gun that demonstrated that hammerless breech-loaders could be attractive and reliable. Gavin had a sleeved example of the Mousetrap, by the patent holder, estimated at £600-£900. Those looking for a ‘second gun’ to use with standard steel shot could do worse than pick up something like the W&C Scott ‘Bowood’ 12-bore that Gavin offered for £1,000-£1,500. These 1980s boxlocks, derived from the Webley & Scott model 700, are available in remarkable condition for very modest sums. The most interesting gun in the sale was probably a Horsley double 4-bore hammer gun, dating from 1871 and estimated at £9,000-£12,000. There is something of a glut in the market of big-bore pieces, and a limited number of buyers. This has caused prices to drop dramatically from a high a decade ago. However, this is a very rare and beautiful piece and perhaps we may see new interest from collectors as prices drop. As for expense, the top value lot at Gavin’s was a 16-bore over & under by Italian maestro Luciano Bosis. Beautifully made, elegant and exquisitely engraved by Pasotti, it was estimated to make up to £30,000.

As another year speeds towards its conclusion, there are plenty of auctioneers who are holding sales. Diggory Hadoke investigates

An approx. 2 1/2in. Muzzle-Loading Iron Cannon by Bailey & Pegg, circa 1830, 38in barrel to touch hole, cast with reinforcing bands and flared muzzle a raised crown over ‘B.P.’ above the trunnions, pitted externally and repainted black, on a carriage with 35 1/4in steel banded wooden 12-spoke wheels, repainted green with black detailing, together with a four-wheel trailer equipped with hand winch and marked to the sides ‘Remember the Mutiny 1857/8’ and ‘Blow them away’ to the rear, estimate £1,500.

Gun Trade Association: Simon West

A PLACE IN HISTORY Simon West reflects on the art and craft of gunmaking and calls on the next generation of master craftsmen to be brought forward

Elleni Faucher, certificated engraver from Holland & Holland, joins Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Peter Delay, Dave Mitchell and Dave Josey at a Certification Panel ceremony at the Proof House in October IT all began with King Edward III, in the early 14th century, who invested in the newly emerging gunpowder technology. The first use of guns appears to have been against the Scots at Berwick in 1333, but they were certainly deployed with the Army in 1346 to the battlefield at Crécy. Although the effect of the guns might have been slight, beyond frightening the French, the course was set and the gun trade quickly grew. The manufacture of guns started in the Tower of London but soon grew to the surrounding areas. Later it was to spread to the provinces and, in the 18th century, saw great expansion in Birmingham. In those early years, the crafts of the gunmakers were spread through many other guilds. The founders made the great guns and the brass work for small arms, the joiners made the stocks, the blacksmiths and armourers made the metal parts, even the coopers helped make barrels. It was therefore difficult for gunmakers to represent themselves in a united way and develop their own standards and generate political and commercial influence. Queen Elizabeth I was lobbied to allow a gunmakers’ guild to be established and pull together the crafts needed to make good guns but with no success. At this time every soldier had to carry his own bullet mould to ensure the ammunition would fit the

Gunmakers’ Company Apprentice Register

gun. Further frustrating military experience in wars with France and Spain reinforced the need for better standardisation and quality of arms. It was no surprise then, that in 1637, King Charles I realised that something needed to be done.

Royal Charter

King Charles I issued a charter naming over 100 gunmakers to form the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers of the City of London. He required three

Gunmakers’ Company Charitable Trust (GCCT) provides bursaries to support apprentices. “In 2007 a bursary scheme was established to support members of the gun trade wishing to employ apprentices. Typically, for a successful application, a grant is up to £5,000 per annum for four years in respect of each apprentice or trainee. Our experience is that this level of support overcomes the initial economic obstacles faced by employers wanting to bring new recruits into gun making. Af-

“ We owe it to ourselves to

recognise the immense talent we have in our ranks ”

things from the Company: the pursuit of excellence, the testing of firearms by proof, and the establishment of training and examination of apprentices under master craftsmen. For hundreds of years since then, the Gunmakers’ Company has examined and certified craftsmen in the gunmaking crafts. The records show the dates when great names of our trade passed the test. Historically, Purdey, Holland, Daw, Egg, Gibbs, Hellis all appear; more recently, Sinnerton, Torok, Louca, Faraway, Pearce, Crudgington, Rule, etc. The crafts of gunmaking are essential to British companies maintaining their reputation for being producers of the best sporting firearms in the world. We must recruit, train and qualify skilled craftsmen and women in all the skill areas. The Gunmakers’ Company is still very active today and provides help in three areas. First the

ter all, the apprentice is not at first fully productive, and the employer loses further productivity due to the time devoted to training. A small craft workshop can ill afford either. A trustee is appointed to mentor each apprentice and to monitor his or her progress.” GCCT Applications for a training bursary should be submitted in writing to the Secretary to the Trustees, GCCT, The Proof House, 48-50 Commercial Road, London E1 1PL or by email to clerk@gunmakers. org.uk

Certification

Secondly, the Company provides qualifications through a certification system. The Certification Panel examines apprentices at the end of their training and later those wishing to be recognised as master craftsmen. The Panel, chaired by Master Barrel

Maker Bill Blacker and manned by master craftsmen from other crafts, has meetings at least three times a year. Armed with examples of their work, and supported by their trainers, candidates attend an interview with the Panel and discuss their skills. At a subsequent meeting, the successful candidates come back with family members to receive their certificates from the Master of the Company. Recently, a syllabus has also been prepared for the examination of gunsmiths. More details can be found at gunmakers.org.uk/ award-of-gunmakers-certification with instructions on how to apply.

Lifetime achievement

Lastly, to celebrate the contribution made by careerlong craftsmen in the Art and Craft of Gunmaking, a few lifetime achievement awards have been made by the Company. Drawing from across the British gunmaking community, recipients of these awards represent that wonderful commitment to a cherished craft. The recent presentations to Ken Hunt, Dave Josey, Peter Delay and Dave Mitchell were quite emotional and a wonderful celebration of the people behind our best guns. As a trade, we owe it to ourselves to recognise the immense talent we have in our ranks. From the young, investing their future in a world-recognised and long-established craft, to those skilled artists who have maintained our country’s reputation for many generations. The Gunmakers’ Company and the GTA are here to help. If you want to know more, get in touch with them. If you know of school leavers or later joiners who might be interested in this rewarding career, please point them to the GTA (gtaltd.co.uk) who know the routes in and can offer advice. GTN

LOOKING BACK AND FORGING FORWARDS

BSA Guns has an enviable pedigree spanning more than 160 years yet refuses to rest on its laurels. Mat Manning catches up with managing director Simon Moore

MM BSA Guns has a very rich history. Can you give us a potted history of the business’s development from its establishment to the current day? SM Yes, it certainly has a very rich and varied history. It began back in 1861, in what was then referred to as the Gun Quarter of Birmingham, manufacturing small arms in association with the War Office’s Board of Ordinance’s Royal Arms Factory at Enfield. The factory gave BSA’s gunsmiths full access to their drawings and designs. That period was followed by many decades of manufacturing anything from air rifles, bicycles and machine tools to motorcycles, cars and even buses. In 1910, BSA bought The Daimler Motor Company and kept it until 1960, when it was sold to Jaguar. BSA also provided an unprecedented supply of small arms for the Second World War. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s we manufactured the L1A1 7.62mm SLR rifle, which is still in use today, for the British Army, and also for many other armies. And let’s not forget the Martini International match rifle. You could say we’ve done it all! In 1986 BSA was restructured and production was concentrated purely on airguns. In 1996 we introduced the SuperTen PCP, from which there is a clear lineage to today’s latest model, the R12 SLX. MM What do you think it is that has enabled the BSA brand to last and thrive for so long? SM There is clearly a real love for the BSA brand, and a heritage that is second to none in our industry. Plus we’re continually looking at how we move forward. We are always asking ourselves questions like “how do we offer the customer a wide choice to cover all requirements?” whilst also recognising that we have to be efficient in all parts of our business, with dealers and end users alike. We pride ourselves on our approach to customer service, and yes, we had some problems coming out of Covid, but we truly believe we offer the best customer support in our sector. MM The flagship BSA R-12 has just been released in a SLX edition. Can you tell us about this new version and some of its key features? SM This rifle was never in our original thoughts when we began planning the transition from our longstanding Ultra, Scorpion and R10 platform to our latest mono-block solution. We had always planned that the R12 Pro would be sidelever air rifle with a thumbhole stock, and the R12 CLX would be bolt action with our classic sporter stock. We really didn’t plan for a sidelever in our sporter stock. However, one of the main aims of the mono-block design was to enable multiple derivatives to be easily and efficiently manufactured to cover a wide range of applications, and so the SLX was born. Apart from the two key features I have already mentioned, it main-

Our cold hammer forged barrels are available to buy in .177, .22 and .25 calibres. All are 500mm in length, choked and have a twist rate of 1 in 19-in. People can obtain them from any approved BSA stockist (RRP £189 regardless of calibre). If the retailer hasn’t one on the shelf, then kindly ask them to call BSA and we can supply it the very next day. MM BSA doesn’t just make PCP airguns. Can you tell us a bit about your most popular spring and gas-ram models? SM We have two new brake-barrel models in the Comet SE and Meteor Super. They are made in Birmingham and were launched in 2022. The Comet SE is a great entry level airgun with a tough synthetic stock. Whilst still very affordable, the Meteor Super takes it up a notch and sits inside an elegant beech stock. Both are fullpower airguns, and are lovely to shoot. We use traditional mainsprings in our breakbarrel airguns for the sub-12ft/lb UK market, but we use gas-rams for the export markets as they enable us to achieve higher muzzle energy.

The R-12 SLX marks the latest advancement in BSA’s flagship airgun range

“ There is clearly a real love for the BSA brand, and a heritage that is second to none in our industry ”

tains all the R-12 features, including a regulated firing cycle and a very reliable magazine-fed action, plus BSA’s cold hammer forged barrel. MM BSA’s cold hammer forged barrels are world famous. Can you tell us about the processes that go into making them, and why they are so reliably accurate? SM It takes over 35,000 hammer blows to form the external diameter and internal rifling of our barrels, and by ‘forming’ the rifling as opposed to cutting it, the process delivers a more repeatable and much stronger form in the bore. To add to accuracy, our barrels also receive a natural choke and crown, which is all as part

of the hammer forging process. The result is a high-quality barrel that shoots with precision. MM I have heard that BSA barrels can now be purchased separately. Why is this and how can people go about buying them? SM That’s right. We have invested heavily in the past two years in order to meet increasing demand, and we are now in the position that we have sufficient capacity to offer them to aftermarket specialists, hobbyists and other manufacturers. With the reputation our barrels have, there are lots of people out there who want to take advantage of the boost they can bring to airgun accuracy.

MM Even in the age of recoilless PCP airguns, spring and gas-ram models remain very popular. Why do you think that is? SM The three simple reasons for that are retail price, simplicity and familiarity. Costs are much lower for break-barrel airguns, as I’m sure you can imagine. They are simple to use because you don’t need accessories such as an air tank, pump or compressor to shoot them. The two models I just mentioned come with fibre-optic open sights, so you don’t even need a telescopic sight to get started. I think nostalgia plays a part too. Lots of airgun shooters started with a ‘springer’ and I’m sure plenty of them still want one or want their children to learn with one the same as they did. MM What have been the toughest challenges faced by BSA Guns over the past few years, and how has the business adjusted to overcome them? SM It is a pretty boring answer, but Covid was our biggest challenge. Our supply chain suffered heavily, as did those of many other industries. Raw material prices have also increased massively, so we are always striving to be more efficient in our manufacturing in order to offset these increases. MM Are there any planned future releases from BSA Guns that you can tell us about, or at least give us a hint? SM We have launched nine new PCPs and two new springers since March 2021. That probably marks the most aggressive re-alignment of new products—certainly in BSA’s history and probably right across the industry—in a great many years. We are always looking for new models with additional features and benefits, so watch this space! GTN

BEING IN THE MINORITY Stuart Farr discovers that it takes one to know one. A shooting man, that is IS there a particular ‘look’ that shooters have? How do we manage to identify other people with the same hobby and passions as ourselves? You know, it’s a bit like spotting American tourists around London or Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer—white sneakers, white socks, tan trousers, bum bags, sun visors and gleaming white teeth. Seemingly, they’re a dead giveaway. But are we the same? A few days ago, I questioned myself along these very lines. Working from home, a knock at the door prompted me to welcome a gentleman with a delivery of goods for our garden. After the initial exchange of basic information—to verify he and I were both in the right place and doing the right thing—he turned to me and said, “So, you’re a shooting man are you?” “How do you know that?” I asked. He replied, “Well, it’s probably the fact you’re wearing a shooting jacket and have a dog whistle on a lanyard around your neck.” Ah! Caught red-handed! On reflection, I realised I hadn’t even given a second thought to my clothing that morning. I had just instinctively grabbed my comfy favourites, got dressed and got on with the day without a further thought. I had no idea whatsoever that my ‘look’ was so recognisable as that of a shooting person. And so, after a brief awkward moment, we did what any two strangers with the same passion would do in that situation: we got straight into talking about shooting, of course.

Body language

An expansive wave of his hand in a vague southerly direction told me he was Lancastrian. In fairly short order, I gained the distinct impression he was feeling that shooting, as a countryside pursuit, was now on its knees. This was, he thought, largely caused by too many people chasing after too little quarry in his area, and constant pestering from the police every time he tried a different brand of bullets for his rifle. “They don’t like me saying the new bullets shoot better,” he explained to me. “So I just tell them that I swapped because they are cheaper.” As the conversation gradually evolved, he came to ask me, “What’s the most common type of dispute you come across?” Let me say this: if I had a pound for every time I am asked that question… Well, I’d have almost enough money to bribe my way into a GTN/Stable Events enclosure at some prestigious game fair. Hey, I’d maybe even enjoy a (free) tipple and a friendly natter with some of you nice people. Seriously though, disputes come in all shapes and sizes nowadays and if it isn’t an economic ‘depression’ (such as this one) which causes business owners to chase down outstanding money very hard, it is the stress of daily life which sometimes creates tensions within a business and can generate animosity.

Falling out

Yes, I am afraid to say, one of the most common form of disputes I see are those where owners within the same business are fighting with each other. In many cases, it is quite sad to see a degeneration in a promising relationship over something relatively minor, perhaps even petty. In other cases, however, I can safely say that when the very hard times arrive, some owners quickly find out who they can trust. And regrettably it is sometimes not the person they are in business with. The form which these apparently ‘internal’ dis-

putes can take may surprise you. Here’s my top three (in reverse order): In third place, I would be looking at the director or business partner who has already exited the business but left a trail of debt or incompetence behind them. Perhaps a few too many skeletons in locked closets or a brewing legal issue or three to address. Often these can be resolved quickly, with a bit of cajoling. The aim being, of course, to let the parties do what

entity followed by the gradual, unauthorised and devious syphoning away of business and assets. If not discovered quickly what is left behind may be the bare husk of a business in the hands of an innocent part-owner. These frauds are brutal and largely unsophisticated, but generally traceable and actionable through the courts. However, be assured you can still sleep easy in your beds. Thankfully, frauds such as the one I

“ I cannot stress enough how

important the Articles of Association of a company are ”

they intended and go their separate ways, without too much fuss or additional expenditure. In second place, one finds the majority-v-minority shareholder battle ground. Even in businesses where the owners started out as quasi-partners, sometimes one personality can dominate over the other. This can lead to unfortunate misunderstandings and circumstances, where the ‘minority’ partner is gently pushed aside, is excluded from key decisions, or even, in extreme cases, from the business itself. Finally, in top spot is… Fraud. Yes folks, in recent years, this is the numero uno business dispute on which I have been most frequently instructed. Of course, external threats from faceless cybercriminals are ever present (and quite real!). However, the biggest monetary frauds often start from within a business itself. Common themes involve the concealed establishment of a separate competing

have described are a very rare occurrence in the gun trade—I have yet to come across one. As you might expect, the very nature of firearms-related businesses present their own natural deterrents—especially where the scrutiny provided by law enforcement authorities is already deeply ingrained.

Imbalance of power

That said, where there is an imbalance of control within any business, minorities can easily begin to feel prejudices in some way. A good way to balance this out is to make provision for a shareholder agreement which sits alongside a properly structured company constitution. I cannot stress enough how important the Articles of Association of a company are. It is always the first document I turn to when consulted on an issue. However, it is fair to say they are barely given

a second thought. In most cases I see, the Articles are pro-forma ‘models’ which have undergone no modification or adaptation at all. All I can say is that a ‘good’ set of Articles is protective. A ‘bad’ set of Articles invites exploitation. Similarly, a shareholder agreement can be highly protective too. This can provide for anti-dilution rights to prevent the ‘value’ of a minority’s share from being watered down; a guaranteed ‘seat at the table’ on the board; restrictive covenants to discourage competitive practices; veto rights to ensure that all major decisions within the business are unanimous; access rights to financial information; and tag-along rights if a sale of the business is ever on the cards. Combined with an appropriate set of Articles, which provides the correct balance of rights as between shareholders and directors, the minority in any business can feel more reassured and, most importantly, they will help to maintain those allimportant levels of trust and confidence between businesspeople. Being within the minority in any business can be a very positive thing. And within the gun trade, it is very noticeable how we recognise each other and so work closely together. The passion for shooting is the glue which binds you together, and this glue is easily complemented by having a sound business structure in place. Insight

THE BUMPS IN THE ROAD

PDATED U Six months on from his overview of the challenges we face, Steve Faragher looks to see where we stand now, and finds that on the whole things are looking a bit brighter LEAD AMMUNITION

TROPHY IMPORTATION

Issue Removing lead from ammunition.

Issue A ban on the importation of any kind of hunting trophy into the UK, that may also extend to exports such as red deer skulls.

Current state Government has listened to consultation and rowed back on many of the worst proposals. Lead shot will still be banned, but only in five years from the enactment of the bill, and lead for airguns and live quarry bullets has been spared a ban. What they are saying “The likely reprieve for lead airgun ammuni-

tion is very good news.” Mat Manning Next stage We just await enactment.

Alarm level was 5

now

2

Bill in parliament Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill. Current state No mention of this in the King’s speech means most commentators feel that it has been pushed into the long grass. What they are saying “To be frank, I’d rather it was this government that passed this legislation than the next one.”

A source close to government. Next stage This is unlikely to go away. Worst case scenario we see this come back with a vengeance under a new Labour government.

Alarm level was 3

now

3

SHOTGUN LICENCES WELSH PHEASANT AND PARTRIDGE LICENSING

Issue In the wake of murders using shotguns in Plymouth and the Isle of Skye, many public bodies, including coroners and police units, were calling for drastic changes to shotgun licensing. Current state To everyone’s surprise, when the proposals finally came, they contained none of the draconian elements we had expected. What they’re saying Common sense prevailed and there is no stomach for a major fight with the rural community in this government.

Next stage The consultation is underway. The only potential issue down the road is if amendments are tabled when the bill is proposed that resurrect some of the harsher proposals.

Alarm level was 5

now

1

GROUSE MANAGEMENT, MUIRBURN AND RAPTORS Issue After the Werritty Report, the Scottish government is seeking powers to licence red grouse shooting and muirburn, and introduce new powers to curtail raptor persecution and ban glue traps. Bill in Scottish parliament Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill. Current state Due to be presented before the Scottish Parliament on November 29. A consultation has been undertaken after which the proposed licensing of snares was upgraded to a proposed ban. SPCA inspectors will also be granted ‘full powers’ to tackle ‘wildlife crime’. What they’re saying Shadow rural affairs secretary Rachael Hamil-

Issue Pheasant and red-legged partridge licensing in Wales. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has come under fire after recommending the Welsh Government implements a licensing scheme for the release of pheasants and red-legged partridges for the 2025/2026 season. Current state After a 12-week consultation, NRW has said: “We advise the Welsh Ministers that common pheasant and red-legged partridge should be added to Part 1, Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in Wales. Any releases of these two species in Wales should be managed through a proportionate risk-based licensing framework.”

What they’re saying Countryside groups, shoot owners, and representatives of the hospitality trade are warning that the Alarm plans risk ‘devastating’ the level Welsh rural economy, while was 4 negatively impacting conservation efforts. Next stage The Welsh government decides whether or not to accept NRW’s recommendation.

now

4

GAMEBIRD RELEASES ton MSP said: “The SNP minister responsible —Gillian Martin—has some serious questions to answer. A series of organisations gave evidence in good faith to the Parliament’s rural affairs committee believing she was willing to hear both sides of the argument. Less than 24 hours later, she’d dismissed those concerns and was aimAlarm ing to railroad through a full level ban on snares anyway.” was 3 Next stage It seems increasingly likely that this bill will pass, with disastrous consequences for the grouse industry in Scotland.

now

5

Issue General Licensing GL43, which allows for the release of gamebirds, has been suspended for two years. The government was supposed to bring in measures restricting the licence for the release of birds near European-designated conservation areas under the general licence but now requires individual applications in cases where releases fulfil those criteria. Confusing? Yes, it is. Current state After many shoots and estates went into overdrive to reach the required standards, the government seemed to backtrack and left the new licence unintroduced while the old one expired.

What they’re saying BASC chief executive Ian Bell commented: “Defra’s original decision to withdraw GL43 without any notice or consultation with the shooting community caused chaos.” Next stage Both BASC and Wild Justice are taking DEFRA to court over the matter.

BASC

BASC RED LINES ON LEAD The Health and Safety Executive review of lead ammunition is now nearing completion. BASC’s Conor O’Gorman takes stock IN the last issue of Gun Trade News, I promised a full briefing on the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) final consultation on its revised restriction proposals for lead ammunition. Having since been through the HSE proposals, background documents and online questionnaire, and discussed with colleagues at BASC, the consensus is that detail of the consultation is a ‘minefield’. The key proposals can be distilled down to the following for the outdoor recreational use of lead ammunition in England, Wales and Scotland: • Lead airgun pellets: No restrictions proposed. • Lead shot for live quarry and target shooting: Proposed ban within five years or less, depending on consultation outcome. • Rifle ammunition for live quarry shooting: No restrictions proposed, but this could change depending on consultation outcome. • Rifle ammunition for target shooting: Can continue on approved ranges where mitigation measures for lead removal are in place, with a twoyear grace period. BASC is preparing a detailed ‘line by line’ response challenging HSE assertions and correcting errors, and our response looks likely to exceed 30,000 words to effectively deal with it all. It is important that BASC and the other shooting organisations submit a forensic level of detail to this final public consultation but, given the technicalities and complexity involved, expecting many others to do the same is obviously unrealistic. The reason I state that is because when the organisations, gun trade and shooting press pushed hard to encourage responses to last year’s six-month HSE lead ban consultation, there were only 2,667 responses from a shooting community of over one million people. And that was a call for views on a full lead ban for the recreational use of lead ammunition outdoors. The latest consultation is a much more nuanced affair, and we have been advising people to skip through the various questions on the HSE online response form and to use the ‘general comments’ section instead in order to give their views for their shooting interests. We are also helping the gun trade and any individuals contacting us for advice on the submission of more detailed responses. With that combined approach we hope to encourage several thousand general responses backed up by several dozen detailed responses for the HSE to take into consideration as it finalises its lead restriction recommendations to Defra.

Survey questions

The online HSE survey form contains very specific questions. To fully understand the context for these questions requires delving deep into the consultation documentation. Those questions are on a three-year transition period for a ban on the use of lead shot for live quarry shooting, a derogation for the use of lead ammunition for humane dispatch, the monetised benefits of reducing the risk of secondary poisoning of raptors from the use of lead bullets, the use of expanding and non-expanding rifle ammunition, and the zeroing of rifles for live quarry shooting. BASC has been sending emails to its members about the proposals and the feedback we have received is mainly from people hearing about the lead ammunition review for the first time. That is a useful

“ For now, the job in hand is to get responses into the HSE consultation by 10 December ” reminder that for many in the shooting community this is new. You may be finding the same thing with your customers? People want to know what is being banned and when, why is this is happening, who is to blame, and what happens next. What is being banned and when? The short answer is that there are no lead bans on the horizon and even if the current or a future government agreed to legislate for some restrictions these should be many years away. Why is this is happening? Following Brexit the government needed to create new laws on the regulation of chemicals so that the trade in various substances between GB and EU could continue (Northern Ireland trade being covered under the NI Protocol). The HSE was tasked as the agency responsible

for the implementation of the regulations (called UK REACH) and in 2021 it was announced that the first two substances to be reviewed would be lead in ammunition and certain chemicals in tattoo inks: emulating similar reviews in the EU. Many more substances have since been reviewed and some banned. The approach the HSE has taken, and is taking with its other reviews, is looking at the risks and investigating where it is feasible to reduce those risks to a ‘nil or negligible’ level. Who is to blame? We could blame Brexit, but on the other hand if it were not for Brexit we would be facing even more draconian EU lead ban proposals than those currently proposed by the HSE. And we are also fighting those proposals as FACE members. Some people blame BASC, of course, despite the evidence being otherwise. After all, there is no lead ban because BASC has been successfully fighting

lead ban proposals for decades and faced a lot of criticism from the anti-lead brigade for our continued resistance. What happens next? It is uncertain what might happen next. The HSE does not create laws. It can only make recommendations and submit these to the Defra secretary of state for consideration. The government may decide not to act on the HSE recommendations. However, looking at the current HSE proposals we have made progress on lead airgun pellets and lead rifle ammunition, but nothing can be taken for granted and more work is needed for all shooting disciplines. Furthermore, BASC has said that if it has concerns that any resulting legislative proposals are disproportionate and will damage shooting, we will lobby for them to be revised. Whatever happens we continue to encourage a voluntary move away from lead shot and plastic wads for live quarry shooting with shotguns, for the reasons outlined by the shooting organisations in 2020. For now though, the job in hand is to get responses into the HSE consultation by 10 December. If you have any queries on submitting your response please email me at conor.ogorman@basc.org.uk and I will try to help. GTN

Shooting in the Media

WEE BIT OF A GROUSE Why, wonders Caroline Roddis, does our pastime need to undergo rigorous cross-examination every time it is mentioned?

THERE’S a wonderful sketch from Not the Nine O’Clock News in which they mimic a series of vox pops around why people read a particular newspaper. It starts with Rowan Atkinson telling the camera that he reads the Telegraph because it doesn’t tell him what to think, and it ends with Mel Smith saying “I read the Financial Times because I have a pink bathroom.” I had visions of middle England sitting in rosy splendour on the morning of Saturday 21 October and frowning down at the Financial Times’ How To Spend it magazine, in which was printed an article entitled ‘Another Round’. It also appeared online with the slightly more click-baity title ‘The grouse, the gamekeepers and the ethics of the shoot’. As anyone who reads the weekend FT—or indeed any weekend newspaper—will know, there are an awful lot of segments, half of which no longer hold any relevance to my generation, who mostly lack a Home, Garden or Money. (They are, however, perfect for the colder months when you need something to get the fire going, even if that fire is in an oil drum under a bridge.) The point is though, there are a lot of places within a weekend paper that you can stick an article. How to Spend It, the segment which can be relied upon to tell you which scented candle would make the most appropriate hostess gift this season, might not be the most obvious place to feature an in-depth look at the pros and cons of grouse shooting. It’s not that the journalism within this supplement betrays the paper’s high editorial standards, but that every piece within it is normally also selling something. The feature in the same edition on biotech beauty, for example, carries an accompanying sidebar on ’10 bio-beauty buys’, while the two-page article on

“ A look at both sides of the coin should never be a bad thing if the subject is handled correctly ”

the Knepp rewilding estate is essentially a giant advert for its new café. The Knepp article, in fact, is quite a good piece to put side by side with the one about grouse shooting which appears some 15 pages later. Both are about controversial activities which take place on private land. Both these activities have supporters and detractors whose opinions are, to some extent, based on extensive personal experience and scientific research. Both articles are also advertising something: the Knepp article their café; the grouse article the extensive sporting offerings available at the Gleneagles hotel. (As an aside, chums from the press who have stayed there confirm that the place is utterly lovely, should you ever be that way and in need of a bit of decadence.) Yet while the Knepp article doesn’t make any reference to any of the above, the grouse article is a look at both sides of the argument. Now it could be that they didn’t want to do two similar style pieces in the same article, but I also have an inkling that had the latter been about golf, not grouse, in similarly beautiful Scottish surroundings, the approach might have been different. Either way, a look at both sides of the coin should never be a bad thing if the subject is handled correctly—and the author here has done a better job than most of her colleagues in the press. Representatives

from various groups have been interviewed, a lot of the topical points are covered and there is no wildly inflammatory language or obvious bias. Yet—as is perhaps inevitable given the limited amount of time allotted to writing any single feature, and the limited space available—some of the content is either too superficial or misleading.

Sitting pretty

One example of this is the author’s description of the walked-up shoot she goes on as part of the Gleneagles jaunt—something she does, seemingly, after just one lesson at their clay ground. “At one point a grouse settles atop a hill directly in front of us. Smith and I approach cautiously, shotguns at the ready. ‘This is your one opportunity,’ he whispers, almost saucily. The bird is within range for a brief second before gunshots ring out to our left.” To the inexperienced reader this does, unfortunately, make it sound as if the grouse has been shot whilst perched on the ground. And while that may be the only way most of us could hit one of the pesky things, it’s probably not the greatest thing if the general public start believing that’s what we actually do. The amount of factual information and column inches allotted to each side of the debate on various points is also frequently uneven. For example, one paragraph begins: “There are also issues with raptor

persecution—the illegal shooting of protected birds of prey to prevent them from feeding on game. ‘If there is still [raptor] persecution, the numbers are grossly exaggerated,’ says Peter Glenser, a criminal barrister and former chairman of BASC. Yet the RSPB’s latest bird crime report says raptor killings are at a 30-year high” before going on to list several examples from recent years which appeared in the media at the time. Glenser is, as one would expect from someone who puts on a show in court for a living, is hugely articulate, not to mention very knowledgeable, and cutting down his contribution to one small and seemingly—from the reader’s point of view—unfounded statement is not (forgive the pun) doing him justice. By contrast, a vast amount of space is given over to the views of one C. Packham. Irritatingly, the publication’s paywall means that while you might be able to read the grouse shooting article for free (as is the case with everything in HTSI), you have to be a subscriber to click through to the letters of response, including one from the GWCT which states: “the claim from the RSPB that ‘land is being managed to maximise one output— red grouse—at the expense of everything else’, has no basis in science.” While the comments section on the article is a good place to go for a further exchange of views (for some values of ‘good’), and indeed in this instance there are many views worth reading, it seems a shame to halt further public discourse by making the letters inaccessible. And reasoned discourse, as the author of the grouse piece has to her credit aimed to create, is what we need to continue our sport. Although it might be wise, for a number of reasons, if that reasoned discourse wasn’t conducted from the bathroom. GTN

For the future. For them.
