HERONSBILL Bronze IDEA in Student Designs for the 2011 International Design Excellence Awards 01/2011 Heronsbill is a wall lamp with a 9.8’‘ diameter and an 1.57’’ thickness. It has a form of a clock but is mainly used as a nightlight. In the daytime, it functions as a common clock except that the hour hand is replaced by a beam of light, while the minute hand changes into a dot of light. As soon as it gets dark in the evening, all its beams of light representing the time interval from that moment to 12 p.m. will be lit up automatically. Before midnight, with time passing by, each beam of light representing a different time interval will begin dimming itself one after another starting at its indicated time, and completely extinguish by the end of that time period. So the brightness in the room gradually reduces. After midnight, these beams of light of corresponding time interval will gradually brighten themselves one by one following the same mechanism mentioned earlier. Heronsbill helps create a gentle light change in the bedroom through changing the amount of beams of light that cast on the wall. Due to this uniqueness, the environment is more ambiently luminous when using Heronsbill compared to a normal lamp. People who are not likely to fall asleep with lights completely off and those who are always dazzled by the morning sunlight are free from these problems with the help of Heronsbill.

Garden Rhyme Tea Set Design 11/2011 Garden Rhyme is a tea set comprising a teapot, four cups, a tea tray with a heating system inside. The concept derives from Classical Chinese Garden. With teapot and cups representing different hills and stones, water representing lake and small platform the land, the whole set makes a mini landscape of Classical Chinese Garden. The white porcelain material of the tea set presents a neat and clean look. Its hidden heating system within the tea tray keeps the water warm and prevents the tea from cooling off. Water comes out from the seam under the teapot and flows all over the plate, creating streams and lakes, until it reaches the drain beneath the platform and flows back to the source to be heated again. The vapor above, produced by the warm water, creates a hazy atmosphere around the tea set, which enables its users a unique tea-tasting experience.

Wiz Tablet Design (Group) 09/2010 - 11/2011 Wiz Tablet Design team is dedicated to plan the product line and brand culture of Wiz Smart Device. The design team was first established in September, 2010, committed to explore more innovative Industrial Design for tablets, and trying to deliver a very natural and human-centered design concept within its products. Due to business reasons, the first generation of Wiz Tablets failed to make its way to the market. After further preparation, Wiz Smart device released the second generation with its design team in June in 2012. As an intern in the tablet design team, I helped design the products of both generations, and was mostly involved in the design of the first one. I was also assigned to take charge of the package design and package modelling of the two generations, and involved in the VI Design and Advertisement Design for Wiz.

Wave 2/2013 https://vimeo.com/62654665 wave. is a volumetric projection project using Firefly in Grasshopper. Instead of a 2-D screen, a 3-D model made by approximately 1500 threads is used to receive the projection. The idea is to project wave lines through a projector onto the model, creating a variety of virtual surfaces that are responsive to the movement of people tracked by camera.

Eyear (Group) 03/2013 https://vimeo.com/62656080 Eyear is a device that enhances people’s sense of hearing. It not only visualizes sound in a given environment, but prioritizes layers of vision according to the audio levels of various sound sources. As a sensing intervention, Eyear consists of a camera, an ipad displaying what the camera is capturing, four microphones oriented in four di erent directions, an arduino board with a circuit connecting all the sensors. The visualization is enabled through codes written in Processing, which creates highlighting pattern onto the area where the microphones sense that there are audio inputs. The sizes of the highlighting areas are determined by their corresponding audio levels, while their relative locations on the display indicate the orientations where the sounds come from, with the upper and lower parts representing front and back. Though not necessarily regarded as a product, a typical scenario for using Eyear is during meeting when people are sitting around a conference table. Due to the fact that whoever is speaking gets highlighted, the attention of the users gets directed to the speaker, which in other words, to the more important information they should focus on.

KousPic (Group) 04/2013 KousPic is a project collaborated with entrepreneurs from Harvard Kennedy School as an entry for 2013 HBS Student New Venture Competition and MassChallenge. As an application, Kouspic proposes a new way of telling personal stories through capturing images that are compiled into gifs, and recording sound as either narratives for the stories or background sound clips. The stores are later on shared to close contacts or shared on Facebook and Twitter. As the UI designer in the team, I started with mapping out the major work flow of the interaction process, which followed by coming up with frameworks based on sketches of the work flow, and eventually creating GUI mockups accordingly. The project is still in the stage of sponsorship pitch and it’s schedule to be released in September, 2013.

Eco-sys 12/2012 The project is aimed to design an interactive application with computational tools that simulates a simple eco-system within an aquatic environment. The Eco-Sys is created according to the basic rule of biological life cycle. All classes, including light, plants, fish, predators, are defined separately in Processing. Plants grow according to the location of the light source, which is controlled by users, and provide fish with life-sustaining energy. Fish, on the other hand, serves as the energy source of its predators. The moving speed of both fish and predators will slow down when not having enough energy as needed. Each living creature also has its own life-span, and will eventually come to the end of its life due to reaching the life expectancy or running out of energy. The size and color represent different age of the fish and predators, while opacity indicates their remaining energy. Some design details are programmed in the reproduction of the fish. Every two fish breed randomly when they get closer enough, and the new generation of fish carries similar genes with its parents. The genes affect its tendency to be attracted or repulsed by plants, other fish, and predators, so the system evolves over time. The number of fish and the number of predators are also correlated to maintain the balance in this eco-system. All the parameters are shown and keep updating themselves as live histograms in upperright corner of the interface.

Video Store Design 12/2010 The video store is 45 squares meter with the height of 2.8 meter. The store consists of a sales area, a product display area, which is no less than 25 square meters, and an area enabling 4 customers to try the CDs and DVDs they intend to purchase before checking out. The store is basically divided into 2 large parts, which can be identified according to the different materials used on the ground. The first part is an area for displaying all the products, and the other part is for showcase and checkout, tiles and wood for the floor respectively. The shelves and the counter in the store help form an aisle that connects the two doors, leaving the audition area in the relatively quiet corner. The display area is placed next to the window, which maximize the use of sunlight during the daytime.
