“The epicenter of the meth epidemic has long been in southern Illinois, she said. Madigan met with southern Illinois law enforcement and local and state officials Friday at John A. Logan College to discuss the rise of “shake and bake meth production and ways to address it.

“The bad guys are making adjustments, so we’re making adjustments, said state Rep. John Bradley. According to a state press release, the method involves mixing the drug’s ingredients in one- or two-liter plastic bottles to produce small amounts. Please see METH | 4

First Solar Bear relaxes in the sun ELI MILEUR Daily Egyptian Carbondale may have moved one step closer to its party-heavy past with the first Solar Bear party, though James Karayiannis says it’s too soon to tell if it will grow to the proportions of February’s Polar Bear. “To compare it to last year’s Polar Bear party is not fair, said Karayiannis, owner of Pinch Penny Pub. “The first Polar Bear party was nothing like the one we have now. Pinch Penny and other bars opened their doors early Saturday to offer a number of summer-themed specials and a beach party atmosphere. Nevertheless, the event did not draw the huge daytime crowds of its February counterpart. Aside from the fact that it hasn’t had the time to grow such as Polar Bear, Karayiannis said there may have been other factors which contributed to the turnout. “At the end of the day, it’s one of the last weekends in August, it’s warm out, there’s a lot of things people want to do, he said. “Sitting in a bar all afternoon is not necessarily always going to be at the top of that list. Terry Muhammad, right, a senior from Chicago studying aviation, and Nick Romanus, a junior from Peoria studying industrial technology, drink before they go to Solar Bear Please see SOLAR | 4

Elmhurst College to ask students’ sexual orientation SIUC asks questions only about academic merit KARL BULLOCK Daily Egyptian Elmhurst College will be the first institution of higher education to ask prospective students about their sexual orientation on its undergraduate admissions application. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Illinois college will use the question to bridge students with campus services and resources. Katharine Johnson Suski, interim director

of undergraduate admissions at SIUC, said she was somewhat surprised at the thought of such a question on an application. “In our case, the application would not be an appropriate way to reach out and target a population of students, she said. Suski said she would not feel comfortable to ask a question about sexual orientation, and the university is very careful to ask questions only related to the students’ academic potential. “We’re very guarded on what we put on the application because those things don’t play into the admissions process, she said. According to the Chronicle article, Gary Rold, dean of admissions at Elmhurst College, said the school looks for students who were academically qualified and diverse, and the college looks at this as a form of diversity.

The question, which is optional, appears on the college’s fall 2012-13 application and asks if the applicant considers him or herself a member of the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender community. Suski said she thinks higher education institutions have good intentions when they reach out to students in the GBLT community, but there are other ways to obtain information concerning which organizations a student might be interested in and what scholarships they might qualify for. Sarah Self, a senior from Lafayette, La., studying university studies, said she would notice if a question about her sexual orientation was on an admissions application. “I’m sure as heck going to notice it, she said. “And I’m definitely going to wonder why they’re asking and wanting to know that kind

of information. Angela Bland, a junior at John A. Logan College studying pharmaceuticals, said the question is an invasion of privacy. “For them to ask a question like that is none of their business, she said. “If you tell them what you prefer, what are they going to ask next? Applicants at Elmhurst College who indiciate they are a part of the GLBT community will be eligible for scholarship opportunities equal to up to one-third of tuition at the college. Self said she was certain people would react negatively if scholarship opportunities were offered at SIUC because a student said they identified themselves as part of the GBLT community.
