Brenda Suromi, a graduate student in art from Venezuela, works on her thesis project at the Glove Factory in Carbondale. Suromi works with different types of fabric and acrylic paints, and she said the main idea of her work is memories. “Now I realize my first meeting with art was with fabric,” she said. Both Suromi’s mother and grandmother were seamstresses. “My grandma made a living making clothing, and I want to make a living making art,” she said. Suromi described her work to be a bit feminist. “(It’s) more about celebrating that I am a woman and celebrating the beauty, design and work itself,” she said. “I want to make something that reminds me how to survive,” Suromi said.
