Change at station irks volunteers CHRISTINA SPAKOUSKY Daily Egyptian A decision to cut time from longrunning music shows to make room for a news program has roiled the staff and some listeners of a Carbondale community radio station. The news program is called “Democracy Now! but some staff members and listeners of WDBX say the way Station Manager Brian Powell made the decision was anything but democratic. “The handbook says (Powell) can make changes anyway, anytime he wants. You’d think (we would) deserve more respect than that, said Jim Foer-

ster, DJ of “Chaos CafĂŠ.â€? Powell said even with the addition of “Democracy Now!â€? the station still plays only two hours of talk radio and 22 hours of music. Powell said WDBX has a long history of listeners who prefer music to talk shows, which is why he gave the show the 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. time slot. He said if he had placed the new show anywhere else, the shows cut would be an hour instead of only 30 minutes. “There seemed to be a fairness issue as well as the opportunity for a good program. It was the decision that would impact staff the least,â€? Powell said. WDBX, 91.1 FM, is run by volunteers and supported by donations.

Powell is the only paid employee and makes all programming decisions with the supervision of the board of directors. The board of directors contains three permanent members, seven elected members and one member of the WDBX staff. Tony Graham’s “The Big Mix was the most severely affected show because it ran Friday during basketball and football games, Powell said. “Democracy Now! would take 30 minutes and the games would take the rest. The show was temporarily canceled until Powell could find another Please see WDBX | 3

Student T.V. program receives professional honors RYAN SIMONIN Daily Egyptian Kevin Hill has hoped he would win an Emmy as executive producer since he joined “alt.news 26:46 as a freshman. In a little more than a month,

he‘ll find out if he will. Hill, a senior from Arlington Heights studying radio-television and cinema and photography, is one of two executive producers of “alt.news 26:46, a program broadcast on WSIU-TV. The student-produced pro-

gram has been nominated for a regional professional Emmy as best magazine show and in two other categories for 2010. Judges evaluate television programs from Illinois, Arkansas and Missouri, and the awards are given by the National Acad-

emy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Mid-America regional chapter. Hill said though he and John Elder, who graduated, were the executive producers of the show last year, the nomination was for everyone involved with the program.

“It is a nice resolve and it brings closure to it, Hill said. “Win or lose, I am just happy to be nominated.
