In 1574 the indigenous reservation of Santa Catalina was founded, which today is the Canton of Mateo. The 12th of October of 1782 Monseñor Esteban Lo­ren­zo de Tristán, Obispo of Nicaragua and Costa Rica baptized a public oratory that was built in a neighborhood called ‘La Lajuela’, which was located at equal distances of all of the neighbors of the barrios called La Lajuela, Púas, Targuás, Ciruelas and Río Grande bewteen the rivers Ciruelas and Alajuela. In 1790 it was declared a Parish Church. This oratorio was the base for the urban develop­ment of the citiy of Alajuela, capital of the province.

During the pre-Columbian time the southern part of Heredia was occupied by the ‘Huertar’s Kingdom of Occi­dent’, and in the north by the ‘Votos’. The first popula­tions emerged in the begi­nning of the 18th Century at 1706, when some people of Cartago decided to live there. The people built a church with a straw roof in a place the indigenous called Cubujuquí. In 1801 the Governor Don Tomás de Acosta introduced the name of ‘Inmaculada Con­cepción de Heredia’ in honor of don Gonzalo Fernández de Heredia, a Spanish General who signed de decree of the foundation of Cubujuquí. In Heredia one can find some industrial zones, as well as the site of the National Center of food distribution CENADA (Centro Nacional de Distri­bución de Alimentos) But most of the area is dedicated to agriculture growing coffee, vegetables, sugar cane, fruits, corn, beans, dairy-farming, flower and plant exportation. There are several interesting locations in this Province. Starting with Heredia and its old church, a bathing spring called Ojo de Agua, National Parks, Volcanoes Barva. • Size: 10,141 km2 • Population: 220,000 • Capital: Liberia The province of Guanacaste is filled with touristic, folkloric and other attractions. Several famous battles took place in this province: The Santa Rosa battle, that defeated William Wlaker on March 20th in 1856. The principal activities next to tourism of this pro­vince is cattle farming and rice farming, there are also impor­tant sugar cane-, as well as cotton- and bean plantations. There were also mine exploi­ tations especially in Abangares. There are many National Parks such as the Guana­caste Na­tional Park, Palo Verde Natio­nal Park, and places like the Barra Honda Caverns and Volcano Rincón de la Vieja etc. Before the Spanish arrived, this territory was inhibited by Chorotega Indians form the town of Zapati, Nacaome, Paro, Cangel, Nicopasaya, Pocosí, Diriá, Papagayo, Na­miapí and Orosi. The Coro­bicies lived on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Nicoya and the Nahuas or Aztecan in the zone of Bagaces. The first church was built out of straw in Nicoya in the 17th Century. • Size: 11,277 km2 • Population: 360,000 • Capital: Puntarenas During the pre-Columbian time, Puntarenas and the surroun­ding areas of the Gulf of Nicoya, were occupied by the indigenous group called ‘Cho­ro­tegas’. The central part was occupied by the ‘Bruncas’ and the southeast by the ‘Buricas’. Gil González Dávila discovered the region. In 1720 the name Puntarenas appea­red, and in the beginning of the nineteenth Century the governor Don Tomás de Acosta requested the Royal Audience of Guate­mala to declare Puntarenas as Port of the Province of Costa Rica. In 1814 it was declared as Mayor Port of Puntarenas. Puntarenas stretches along the Pacific Coast with lots of beaches and beach towns and many National Parks like the Manuel Antonio National Park and the Corcovado Natio­nal Park. It also is the Surfer’s Para­dise with Hotels in Jacó like the Balcón del Mar that specia­lize to acco­mmo­date surfers. There are also lots of agricul­tural and industrial areas, that produce vegeta­bles, roots, corn, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, rice, palm oil, sugar, and beans. Puntarenas is also home of the mayor fishing industries like Sardimar and some cattle farming. Some of the most important na­tu­ral reserves, like the Ab­so­lute Natural Reserve of Cabo Blan­co and the Wildlife Natural Refu­ge of Golfito can be found there.

• Size: 9,188 km2 • Population: 275,000 • Capital: Limón Before the Spanish arrived in Costa Rica the area of Limón was inhabited by the indige­nous groups called: Huétares, Suerres, Pococies, Tariacas, Viecitas and Terbis. Columbus came to the province the 18th of September 1502 when he arrived at the Uvita Island. During the second half of the 17th Century, people started growing Cocoa in the Valley of Matina. By 1871 the construc­tion of the railroad began and right after that the plantation of bananas. In 1964 began the construction of a crude oil refi­nery and in 1979 the Province inaugurated their Port at Moín. The name of the Province co­mes from a Lemon Tree that was found in front of the go­ver­nor’s office which was unique of its class. The prin­cipal activi­ties of the area are bana­na and palm-oil produc­tion as well as pejiba­ye, cocoa, bam­boo, beans, fruits, coconuts and some cattle farming and fishing. One of the most interesting sites of Costa Rica is Tortu­guero. A system of natural lagoons and navigable cha­nnels also called the Costa Ricas Amazons. It hosts the Tortuguero National Park and is a must for any tourist interes­ted in Flora, Fauna and Turtles. The climate is warm, and hu­mid. The seasons are some­how different as in the rest of the country. Which makes the area a beautiful alternative for the months September and October, when it rains a lot in the rest of the country but not necessarily so in Limón.
