ARCHITECTURE GRADUATE MC - ARCH / B - ARCH

. hello hola .

GUSTAVO ARMANDO .QUAN MARTINEZ. I believe in honesty and being grounded, and so particularly in this lifestyle, my passion is encompassed around the sensory. My passion lies in understanding how and what are the things that make us feel and be affected by, at an emotional level. To me these hold long lasting effect to the way we live every day and so believe these are the principles to know, when we speak of architecture. I am a post graduate architecture student currently based in Perth Westrern Australia, having graduated and completing a Masters degree from Curtin University in 2018. I find my self to be an individual that is acheivement driven, passionate and ambitious with a strong sense of teamwork. An honest and dedicated individual that strives for setting and achieving goals at high standards with dedication to the finest of details.

AGED CARE FOR ALZHEIMERS brief : This project aimed to provide an aged care centre for the elderly community of Armadale in Western Australia, who were suffering from stages 1 to 4 of Alzheimer’s disease. This category was set as it would be most effective in managing the progression of this condition before progressing to its severe phases. project : As the Australian population increases, so does the numbers of our aged population. With this growth, Western Australia will also experience a consistent occurance of Alzheimer’s disease within this age group, in particular the city of Armadale. For 2018, it is expected there to be approximately 638 people living with AD, and that by 2050 there would be more than 2268 cases of AD. This means our elderly community will depend greatly on more forms of aged care systems such as that of an aged care facility. This centre is constructed around the idea of maintaining the lifestyle as one would, being in their daily routines and activities, with the intentions of managing the negative side effects of AD. Here we introduced several ideas that would allow this for the centres elderly residents, and would come about through designing around the idea of a microcosm of this community, which is then further supported by the ideas of Normalisation, Behaviourism, Nature and Sensory.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS Here the flow and placement of the project was developed thoroughly by simultaneously considering the facotrs of the site, and the factors which were important in both positively and negatively inputting in the outcomes of the progression of AD in these residents. It considered the daily flow of the residents to acheive the idea of the microcosm as a grounded design direction.

M A T E R I A L I T Y TIMBER / NATURE / SENSORY

within the spaces that resemble and relate to a home such as the residential units, common living and dining, and spaces of care, timber has been used as it has the warmer characteristics and is a softer material, able to provide a more comfortable and relatable environment for the progression of AD.

BRICK / RESIDENTIAL / FAMILIAR

in spaces that are of a mixture of uses such as the cafe / store and carer facility, a residential-like brick is used as it aims to create an environment that relates to the towns local aesthetic use of brick. Aiming to retain a residential aesthetic and atmosphere.

TIMBER / CIRCULATION / NATURE

all circulation pathways are given timber as its material. This includes external and internal circulation. This blends both the sense of external and internal environments through the sense of touch. Timber has been the material of choice as it holds natual and warm characteristics which plays a positive effect on the cognitive of the patient. PROJECTS.

HUSK INNOVATIONS PROJECT brief : This project is based in Iiyama Japan and was a blend of an already existing train storage shed and the proposed, where the clients asked for something that gave back to the people of the community and represented the culture of the town of Iiyama. It woul be a node for artists, elderly, youth and creatives to come together and share to produce works representing the people of its town. project : The direction taken for this project was to create a building that related closely to the significance of Iiyama. Therefore, rice was our main leader. Rice is one of the main resources for Iiyama and its exporting as it is known well for its quality. The project decides to look particularly at the rice husk which is able to be converted through a process, into a plywood-like material. The building would then become a hub and serve as a workplace, design studios, showroom, educational and collaborative spaces for a range of people to create, from artists to elderly.

EAST PERTH URBAN REDEVELOPMENT brief : this project is based in East Perth WA, where a portion of land was designated to be redeveloped to provide a new vibrant site whos current state was one that was “dead. This redevelopment would have to create a relationship not only for the residents, but have to now hold a link to the river and propose a new program to the site. project : seeing this area was quite silent as a result of its original intent, this gave lead to create a new vibrant site which its design would be based on pedestrian circulation which was a concept to support a vehicle free suburb for the future.

FINAL MASTERPLAN

The new proposed redevelopment for East Perth has converted the original site to a mixed use residential zone creating a vibrant microcosm which continues to better integrate the community. The redevelopment would create connections from Claisebrook area (west), to the new Optus stadium by the new bridge, allowing them to meet at this site. The new site is structured by having looked at the original site grid layout, pedestrian, private and public routes to create an urban program which married all and proposed, to deliver a celebrational node.

FOR THE ARTISTS AT CHIDLOW

Lake Leschenaultia. Chidlow, WA

PROJECTS.

44

Discovering the project The project was born from an intention of embeding the structure within the site to allow a seamless flow on site while retaining the arts within the physical site. A number of conceptual sketches were made to discover this essence.

PROJECTS.

45

RECYCLED & ENVIRONMENTAL ARTS HUB brief : this project was created based on the idea of providing an arts space for the community for Chidlow Western Australia. It was a space that would offer students a platform to explore public architecture, advocating sustainability and encouraging a creative community life. Here, both the young and old from the community would congregate to learn about the use of recycled materials and the environment. project : therefore, this project took on the direction of creating a structure that focuses on the use of recycledmaterials whilst keeping unity with the site and its explorers. This was done by sinking the structure into the physical site, as a means of creating focused spaces within the building and maintaining the natural direction of the site above.

brief : the client needed a display of a louvre system produced by the company, as to deliver understanding of the physical use of the louvres. The project required a series of images showcasing the placement of the louvres on a home which had to be designed and modelled. A walkthrough video had to be constructed to show a virtual flow of the entire project for full understanding of the product.
