Sattaur suing Kaieteur News for over $500M JUSTICE Sandra Kurtzious yesterday granted an injunction against Kaieteur News, preventing the daily newspaper from publishing defamatory statements about Commissioner-General of the

She ordered that Kaieteur News is restrained from further writing, printing, publishing, circulating or causing to be written, printed, published or circulated defamatory material about the GRA Head.

National Media and Publishing Company Limited, publishers of the local daily (Kaieteur News), its owner Mr. Glenn Lall and editor, Mr. Adam Harris, were named in the order granting the injunction.

The injunction was granted after an Ex-Parte application filed by Sattaur’s lawyers on Wednesday. The application also called for

Kaieteur News articles and columns, which stated that: the GRA Head compromised confidential tax information; he breached his Oath of Office; and was involved in a plot to destroy the newspaper, among other assertions.

The new items were made public in several editions of the newspaper, including that of 31st August, 2014; 7th September, 2014; 10th September, 2014; 11th September, 2014; 14th September, 2014; 16th September, 2014; 21st September, 2014; and the 23rd September, 2014.

contempt.”

Sattaur’s affidavit continued: “The distress and humiliation has been enormous and will continue to be felt for the foreseeable future. I have been lowered in the estimation of right thinking members of society generally and have suffered egregious injury.”

He also charged that “unless restrained”, the Kaieteur News will continue to be used as “an instrument of defamation” and will cause and continue to cause him irreparable harm and injury.

“I am fearful that unless restrained by this Honourable Court, the Respondents/ Defendants will continue

Earlier in the week, the GRA Head had disclosed to the Guyana Chronicle that he will be moving to the courts with a libel suit against Kaieteur News, when contacted for a response to the allegations levelled against him by that daily newspaper.

“The necessary arguments (refuting Kaieteur News’ claims) will be provided for the publisher and editor to respond to in a libel suit,” the GRA Commissioner-General had stressed, adding that the stakeholder parties ought to have armed themselves with the facts before making false allegations.

The injunction is valid until a determination is made in the matter, which is expected to be heard in Chambers on 14th October, 2014 at 9:00 hrs. The named defendants will be liable for failing to comply with Justice Kurtzious’ order.

GuySuCo workers to get four per cent pay hike THE workers in the sugar belt can expect a four per cent increase in their remunerations, which will be finalised via an agreement that will be inked today.

Asked to comment on the increase, Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy highlighted that the increase comes at a time

when labour forces in many other countries are dealing with pay cuts, layoffs and stagnated remuneration packages, as a result of prevailing economic challenges.

He said, “The industry is not in the best financial position, but GuySuCo, because of its commitment, has ensured that it gave an

increase. At a time when industries around the world are encountering difficulties, industries in Guyana have strived to continue to offer salary and wage increases for our workers.”

The minister added that while the four per cent hike may seem like a minimal increase, but compared to the current global con-

ditions, the offer of an increase is a commendable effort.

The increase follows the completion of negotiations with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), among other stakeholders.

No delaying tactics with no-confidence motion – PM

PRIME Minister and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Samuel Hinds, has rejected the assertion that the current Administration is employing delaying tactics ahead of the debate on the much-talked-about no-confidence motion.

The Alliance For Change’s (AFC) no-confidence motion was submitted to the Clerk of the National Assembly at the beginning of August.

There has been some chatter among the Opposition parties that the Administration has a hand in activities that seek to undermine the advancing of the proceedings related to the motion.

The most recent was the allegation made by AFC Leader, Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan. He claimed that there was a proposal by the ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) to “buy out” Members of Parliament (MPs) from A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) at $30M each, in exchange for their opposition to the no-confidence motion. This has been denied by both the ruling party and the main Opposition party.

Mr. Hinds stressed.

Additionally, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Raphael Trotman, when asked, stated that he has no knowledge of any requests being made by the current Administration for the debate on the no-confidence motion to be delayed.

However, he added that decision as to what constitutes the agenda of Parlia-

ment is the responsibility of the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs.

Isaacs has not confirmed any such move by the current Administration.

FIRST INKLING Meanwhile, the first inkling the public had that the AFC had planned moving a no-confidence motion against the Government was way back in mid-June, when party Vice-Chairman, Mr Moses Nagamootoo, hinted at it.

He did so by way of an article published in the Stabroek News and headlined: “AFC considering no-confidence motion against Gov’t.” He, however, acknowledged that to do so would require the support of the main Opposition party, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

agitating, with increasing vigour, for local government elections. This move was advanced despite APNU’s expression of support for the no-confidence motion which, if passed, would see Guyanese returning to the polls for general elections.

The last time general elections were held in Guyana was in November 2011.

On the other hand, local government elections have not been held since 1994.

Prior to that, local government elections were last held in 1970. Subsequent to 1994, the elections could not be conducted because of the coincidence with the general and regional elections of 1997. Additionally, the House passed the Local Authorities (Elections) (Amendment) Bill 2013, which states that elections must be held on or before August 1, 2014. The August date was made via an amendment to the Bill, proposed by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), while the House was in Committee stage. However, this bill has not been assented to by the Head of State.

The first page of the Motion reads: “Be it resolved that this National Assembly has no confidence in the Government.”

As stated in Section 106 (6) of the Constitution: “The Cabinet and President shall resign, if the Government is defeated by the vote of the majority of all Members of the National Assembly on a

INDICATIONS OF UNCERTAINTY Since the motion was submitted to the Clerk of the National Assembly, however, there have been indications of uncertainty in the Opposition camp.

While the AFC stands firm on their position regarding a move to general elections via a no-confidence motion, the APNU has been

(BBC News) ALMOST 350 people, thought to be Syrian refugees, have been rescued by a cruise ship off Cyprus after their boat ran into trouble in rough seas.

They were taken aboard the ship, Salamis Filoxenia, Limassol port master Girgos Pouros said. All are said to be in good health.

The Cypriot defence ministry said 52 children were on the small fishing boat that had sent a distress signal.

They were spotted 55 nautical miles (100km) south of the town of Paphos.

The defence ministry said all 345 people on board the fishing boat had been rescued.

Paraguay tourist boat capsizes killing Brazilian tourists (BBC News) THE bodies of two Brazilian tourists have been retrieved after their boat capsized on the River Paraguay.

Brazilian officials said that 12 people managed to swim ashore, but 10 passengers and three crew were still missing.

The Paraguayan vessel, Dream of the Pantanal, sank during a heavy storm on the Brazilian border.

Officials said it was carrying 11 Paraguayan crew and 16 Brazilian tourists.

El Salvador’s total abortion ban lethal, says Amnesty (BBC News) EL SALVADOR’S total ban on abortions is killing women and girls and condemning others to decades in jail, says Amnesty International.

The rights group says that the ban is pushing women into unsafe, clandestine abortions or forcing them to undergo dangerous pregnancies.

The constitution in the majority Roman Catholic country protects the right to life “from the moment of conception”.

Women and girls who violate the ban face lengthy jail sentences.

Under El Salvador’s homicide laws, women who decide to terminate their pregnancy can be sentenced

to up to 50 years in prison.

“The horrific repression that women and girls in El Salvador face is truly shocking and akin to torture,” says Amnesty International.

“Shockingly, the ban extends even to cases where the life of the pregnant woman is at risk, and to children who have been raped,” it adds.

Supreme Court ruling

In May last year, a seriously ill 22-year-old woman was denied an abortion by El Salvador’s Supreme Court.

The woman, referred to as Beatriz, suffered from lupus and kidney failure. The foetus had serious medical problems.

The Supreme Court upheld the Central American’s nation ban, in a case that drew international attention.

A week later, doctors decided to go ahead with a premature Caesarean section, after the woman started having contractions.

The baby died five hours after the C-section.

Health Minister Maria Isabel Rodriguez said at the time that the medical intervention did not contravene the court ruling.

Amnesty International is calling on the government of El Salvador to decriminalise abortion on all counts.

El Salvador is one of seven Latin American countries where there is a total ban on abortion.

The others are Chile, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Suriname.

Paraguay bishop Livieres sacked over ‘abuse cover-up’ (BBC News) POPE Francis has sacked a Paraguayan bishop who has been accused of protecting a priest suspected of sexually abusing young parishioners.

The Vatican said that “the Holy Father has decided to replace Monsignor Rogelio Livieres Plano” as bishop of Ciudad del Este.

It is the second time in a week that Pope Francis has taken disciplinary action over clerical sex abuse scandals in Latin America.

He has promised “zero tolerance”.

Two days ago, the Pope ordered the arrest of a senior Vatican diplomat, Jozef Wesolowski, accused of the sexual abuse of children during a posting to the Dominican Republic.

conservative Opus Dei movement and is reported to have clashed with more progressive members of his diocese.

Church prosecutors have dealt with some 3,500 abuse cases worldwide during the past decade.

Pope Francis has pledged a crackdown on

clerics and employees of the Church who exploit minors, comparing their actions to a “satanic mass”.

Terrorism, on national and universal scales, fostered by despotic, demonic leaders, has become endemic, with innocent people kidnapped and/ or murdered while criminals make progressively outrageous demands after their wanton destruction of social and physical structures, with a consequential decline, and oftimes curtailment, of economic growth.

And the list of atrocities continues to grow.

Of 164 nation states no less than one-third are engaged in armed conflict.

The arms sale by superpowers to warmongers has contributed significantly to the perpetuation of armed conflict within and between nations and currency is diverted from food acquisition and social service provision to sustain luxurious lifestyles of profligate leaders while the populaces subsist on the precipice of existence – some states in the Middle East are cases in point.

As a contributory factor to global moral decay, and even more potent since the advent of modern technological devices, is the modern entertainment industry, which has negatively impacted, as nothing else has, on sensitive and impressionable young minds. Unless a youngster possesses an inherent or in-bred high moral code that motivates resistance he/she will inevitably develop anti-social and

anti-developmental value-systems; influenced, informed, and exacerbated by moral turpitude and peer pressure.

Unfortunately, adults and persons in positions of authority often propagate negative behavioural patterns, which their offspring, or young persons in general, use as moulds for their own behaviour.

In 1939 the Academy Award winning movie ‘Gone with the Wind’ shocked the world with the use of a four-letter word, but today movie stars and ‘heroes’ use these words as a matter of form, disregarding the fact that young fans emulate their mannerisms. Smoking by ‘heroes’ has the same implications of influence on impressionable minds.

‘Rambo’ took to the battlefield in Vietnam and Rambomania erupted in teenland. ‘Macho’ students wielding various types of weapons terrorise teachers and other students – oftimes injuring and sometimes killing in the process. Adult gang wars have bred children gang wars as ‘heroes’ are imitated, while blood and gore are romancing the realms of erotica, eventuating and perpetuating even more violence, promiscuity, and all their related ills. Children’s games are violence-oriented and have taken away the innocence of childhood even from babyhood.

Families have become individualistic in contrast to units and this breakdown of family togetherness has contributed significantly to the moral decay in society, with all its inherent dangers.

World leaders are stymied by the momentum of universal corruption and depravity, where even

children are targeted for exploitation; but instead of addressing global problems in a collective way, as essayed by Dr. Cheddi Jagan’s formula in his New Global Human Order, formidable concentrations of technological energies and resources are expended on formulating mechanisms engineered for purposes of warfare.

Many august bodies have issued dire warnings of impending doom for mankind unless the nuclear race is curtailed; but noone is heeding this plea.

According to the book ‘James Fighting Ships 1986-87’ Britain, China, France, Russia, and America have 131 ballistic missile submarines in active service. No city lies beyond their reach and a warhead is geared to land within a mile of its target.

Some carry sufficient warheads to ‘obliterate countries within 5,000 miles,’ says the Guinness Book of World Records.

It is claimed that the warhead in l ballistic missile could cause a nuclear winter to imperil all life on earth. Configure the statistical formulations and empirical data with the inclusion of other nuclear-ready countries from then to now and a frighteningly chilling possibility for a nuclear holocaust emerges.

All it would take is one vital human error to set in chain events that would provide the impetus toward laying waste all living organism on earth, because the radioactive fallout could blanket the earth in a limitless nuclear winter.

Professor Freeman, former professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wrote a

book entitled “This is the Way the World Will End: This is the Way You Will End, unless…” He affirms therein that there are 151 indications of immediate attack recorded within an 18-month period: “Four resulted in a state of alert for B-52 bombers and intercontinental missiles in preparation for retaliation.’ He reported that all errors were corrected in time, although some came close to tragedy, to the extent where, on 9th November 1976 nuclear bombers took to the air in six minutes readying a nuclear counterattack.

In early 1984 forty-seven scientists, including eighteen Nobel Prize winners, advised the “Bulletin of Atomic Scientists,” a monthly publication, to move its ‘doomsday clock,’ which represented their assessment of the eminence of a nuclear conflagration, forward by l minute to 3 minutes before midnight.

The very real possibility of space becoming a battleground, with lasers devastating specific targets on earth, no longer exists only in the realms of science fiction but has become a stark threat to humankind.

In l984 India, Mexico, Tanzania, Sweden, Greece, and Argentina issued a Declaration, identified as the Four-Continent Peace Initiative.

In l913 Woodrow Wilson became the 28th President of the USA. This peace-loving man’s most famous phrase was: “The world must be made safe for democracy…civilization itself seems to hang in the balance,” when he was forced to enter World War 1.

He then laid his head on the table and cried like a child.

Wilson it was who conceived the League of Nations, which was the forerunner of the United Nations, the logo of which is a Biblical passage taken from the Book of Isaiah and reads in part: “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks.

There have been many such initiatives but one of the most touching was the involuntary laying down of arms by enemy troops in December of l914, who exchanged meagre rations and souvenir gifts in no-man’s land in celebration of the birth of the Prince of Peace.

However, world leaders are engaged in a mad dash to precipitate Armageddon as all peace initiatives are trampled by egomania; but if leaders of and within nations could liberate their souls like the Mahatma, who at no time ever hated his country’s oppressors, and strive to achieve peaceful resolutions in a unity of purpose that could coalesce under the lambent flame of a unifying entity – a Godhead, if you will: No names nor doctrines, but what Plato describes as “a turning of the whole soul towards the light,” then the propagation and phenomenon of war would be relegated to pages within history books and a victory would be won that no war could wrest – liberation of souls, of nations and, ultimately, of the world.

Underlying causes of suicide IN recent times Guyana has seen a startling rise in the number of suicide cases that now has many families, friends, and even our nation as a whole with a lot of questions as to why.

When the question “why” is asked the expected answer is usually “hopelessness.”

And while I may agree with this theory to some extent, please permit me to suggest a few other factors that should be considered as the underlying causes of suicide.

The death of a loved one.

A divorce, separation, or break-up of a relationship.

Losing custody of children, or feeling that a child-custody decision is not fair.

A serious loss, such as a loss of a job, house, or money.

A serious illness.

A terminal illness.

A serious accident.

Chronic physical pain.

Intense emotional pain.

Loss of hope.

Being victimised (domestic violence, rape, assault, etc).

A loved one being victimised (child murder, child molestation, kidnapping, murder, rape, assault, etc.).

Physical abuse.

Verbal abuse.

Sexual abuse.

Unresolved abuse (of any kind) from the past.

Feeling “trapped” in a situation perceived as negative.

Feeling that things will never “get better.”

Feeling helpless.

Serious legal problems, such as criminal prosecution or incarceration.

Feeling “taken advantage of.”

Inability to deal with a perceived “humiliating” situation.

Inability to deal with a perceived “failure.”

Alcohol abuse.

Drug abuse.

A feeling of not being accepted by family, friends, or society.

A horrible disappointment.

Feeling like one has not lived up to his or her high expectations or those of another.

Bullying. (Adults, as well as children, can be bullied.)

Low self-esteem.

It is very rare that someone dies by suicide because of one cause. Thus, there are usually several causes, and not just one, for suicide.

Many people die by suicide because DEPRESSION is triggered by several negative life experiences, and the person does not receive help for the depression. (Some people need to go through several treatments until they find one that works for them.)

Know what the symptoms of depression are and remember that any untreated mental illness, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others, may cause suicide.

The laws on domestic violence LOUIS Holder’s letter in your newspaper on the root cause of domestic violence is a bunch of rubbish.

Talking about eating salt and certain foods and smoking can lead to this, that and other sickness makes no sense.

If one were to do everything in moderation there would be less sickness.

If one wants to eat red meats by the pounds on a daily basis then one is bound to be sick.

On the issue of “domestic violence” it is the laws that are on the side of most violent men against women.

Louis Holder talks about what women are trying to do in the United States of America, but the writer failed to tell readers who are mostly the law makers - “men or women”?

Take a serious look in all countries and you will see it is all men who making laws, mostly to protect men.

You think those men would make and pass laws that, once proved that a woman was slapped by a man, he must serve no less than 100 years in jail?

Likewise that law must go for women too.

The reason other lawmen must make a pass is that, once a woman calls police for an assault by a man and that man is charged because of proof or marks of violence on her and she goes to court and begs for mercy for her abuser, she must be sentenced to no less than 100 years in jail.

You would be surprised to see how quickly men and women stop beating each other.

Is the Mayor’s Cup Tournament a sacred cow?

FIRSTLY, can the President of the Guyana Football Federation, Christopher Matthias publicly state at what juncture did the remnant of his executive (unconstitutional) deliberate to grant approval for the coordinating of the Mayor’s Cup? Secondly, exactly which body submitted the application - was it the Mayor’s Cup Organising Committee, or the East Bank Football Association? By the way, who are the additional members of the Organizing Committee? Since over the years, and to the best of my knowledge only one person exists (me, myself and I) executive coordinator, Lennox “Cross eye/Maling” Arthur.

Thirdly, have all the requirements been met. i.e. lodging of prize monies; or a letter of commitment from a reputable sponsor (s) to honour payments to the top four finishers; approval from the respec-

tive associations for their affiliates participation; utilisation of officiating personnel from the Referees Council, etc.

Along with medical personnel, stretcher bearers and adequate ball boys, security presence with visible uniformity is also another prerequisite: Of equal importance is the payment of fees, which is normally done before the contract is signed and a proposed budget of income and expenditure is submitted. But with the tournament’s executive coordinator’s known history of threatening language and verbal abuse to office staff of the GFF, could it be that the President is afraid of the individual and is lenient? Other organizers incur the wrath of the GFF, namely the K & S Organisation and Slingerz F.C - the latter was given a royal run around last year. By the way, how come a total of 32 teams are participating? Why must it take

a total of six weeks to complete?

Are these normally acceptable, in view of the fact that Fridays and Sundays are normally set aside for the associations’ domestic schedule?

A bonding friendship has been existing between “Cross Eye” and Matthias over the years. Is this why the goalposts are being shifted? It must be noted that never before did the Mayor’s Cup K.O had 32 participants, since this was against the norm in granting approval. When was this ruling changed? With Hamilton Green as the Mayor, of Georgetown, how come matches are being played in Berbice, East Coast and West Demerara? And His Worship over the years has done absolutely nothing to upgrade Parade Ground; so in actuality what benefit does the sport derive from his office? I rest my case.

Sugar workers return to work

– everything back to normal - Komal Chand ALL the field and factory workers who were involved in the sugar industry’s most recent strike action have returned to work, according to President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Mr. Komal Chand.

“All the workers of the estates that were part of the strike have returned to work.

Everything is back to normal,” he said.

Chand added that the reconciliation talks scheduled for today will proceed as scheduled, to address the problem at the Skeldon Estate, which led to the strike.

The GAWU President, in an earlier comment, had

explained that the strike stemmed from an alleged altercation between Estate Manager, Mr. Dave Kumar and Daniels, a worker at the Skeldon sugar estate.

He said the report he received is that last Friday, at around 11:30pm, the estate manager, who had allegedly been consuming alcohol, was on his way to the Dock Mill, where a cane harvest had been offloading. Before he reached there, he met several workers and reportedly asked them to move. The allegation is that all the workers did not remove immediately and the estate manger became incensed.

“The report we have is that the worker was verbally

abused, he was cursed at, and there was a scuffle where the estate manger allegedly attempted to hit him,” Chand had said.

He added that the worker continued working, but was later informed that he was fired and escorted off the premises by the estate’s security personnel.

As a result, workers moved to strike action. In addition to Skeldon, field and factory workers at Albion and Rose Hall also participated in the strike action.

Subsequently, the Terms of Resumption (TOR) agreed to by the Union and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) stated that: “The strike

by field and factory workers attached to Skeldon and Rose Hall that were ongoing as of Wednesday will end; the Union will ensure full resumption of duties by field and factory workers from yesterday; within 24-hours, after resumption of duties, the aggrieved parties, including GAWU, will meet with the Chief Labour Officer, who will make a final decision on the matter; there will be no victimization on either side because of strike actions; all workers who were on strike will not have their ‘strike day’ counted as absent, but as days not available for work; and the dismissal of the Skeldon factory employee, Mr. Steven

Daniels, will be now treated as a suspension, without pay, until the end of the reconciliation talks.”

Additionally, Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, told the Guyana Chronicle that he is happy that a compromise was reached and the workers have resumed duties.

“We will continue to have disagreements, but we have to learn to speak to each other and resolve out problems, as expeditiously as possible. This way the first resort will not be strike action,” he said.

CATCHING UP Asked about the impact of the strike action on the

sector’s production for the second crop, the Minister stated that the estates will be working on catching up to their targets.

“I am still confident we will meet our target,” Dr. Ramsammy said.

The first crop was successful, surpassing the 75,000 tonnes target, bringing in about 80,000 tonnes.

The overall target for 2014 has been moved from 216,000 tonnes to 219,000 tonnes. Sugar production came in at a dismal 186,500 tonnes for 2013, but Guyana has been taking steps to turn around the sugar industry and hopes to meet the 300,000 tonnes target soon, with a projection that the sector will reach its 400,000 tonne goal by 2020. Australian ‘Direct Aid Barclay to know fate Programme’ to get on Monday 'bigger and bigger' in Guyana

By Telesha Ramnarine THE Australian Government’s ‘Direct Aid Programme’ (DAP) is intended to become “bigger and bigger” in Guyana, according to Senior Policy and Research Officer of the Australian High Commission, Mr. Clint Fernandez.

Speaking yesterday at the Foreign Affairs Institute, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, he urged that the local Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) take on greater initiatives with DAP and work along with the Australian Government in 2014/2015.

Fernandez is on a visit to Guyana and sought to provide a short briefing on DAP, which he described as a big part of Australia’s profile and presence in the Caribbean region. “We do hope to do more in Guyana both in the field of community health and to broaden our horizon to other things,” he said.

Fernandez added that for this reason, he had meetings with several government

ministries ever since he arrived in the country.

Part of his outreach includes visiting projects that were funded in the past and he cited two that were highly successful in Guyana last year, both of which were in the field of community health.

LOCAL PROJECTS The local project, valued US$17,000, is the outfitting of a special needs care and rehabilitation center in Port Mourant, which he also visited yesterday. Many people from nearby communities who do not have facilities end up visiting Port Mourant for assistance, he said.

There was also a training aspect to this project in which two volunteers were trained in special needs physiotherapy. “The capacity of the institution is now significantly raised with both equipment and trained staff, so we are really pleased to be involved in that project,” he expressed.

According to Fernandez, the other project was imple-

mented here by the Cancer Institute of Guyana. It was a cervical cancer education and screening project, at a cost of US$20,000 that was run in collaboration with four other cancer societies in the region.

It was a regional project and hence in addition to the Cancer Institute of Guyana, the cancer societies of Jamaica, Dominica, Grenada and Belize were involved and it was managed by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition.

Fernandez said 1,835 vulnerable women were educated and screened for cervical cancer. In Dominica, 60 uninsured women were provided with vouchers for free cervical cancer treatment, 17 outreach workers and nurses were trained in administering pap smears and counseling, and 28 of those were right here in Guyana.

In addition, 22 community outreach sessions were conducted to build capacity in the respective cancer societies for future outreaches and 9000 materials were developed to support cervical cancer education.

JUSTICE Diana Insanally who is presiding in the Alvin Barclay murder trial will sum up the evidence to the jury on Monday morning, after which she would hand the case to them for their consideration and verdict.

Defence counsel Mr. George Thomas in his address to the jury yesterday urged them to find that from the evidence they would conclude that Yohan Hunte, now deceased, was the aggressor and was chasing the accused all over the place.

Under such circumstances, it was the bounden duty of the jury to return a verdict of not guilty in favour of the accused who was running to save his life.

Prosecutrix Miss Mercedes Thompson told the jury that the accused had given a different defence in his unsworn statement from the dock to that which he was advocating during the trial.

Barclay is said to have fatally stabbed ‘Man on the roof’ during a fight on September 2nd, 2012.

However at the closure of the prosecution’s case last

Monday after four witnesses were called, the defence counsel elected to make a no-case submission in the absence of the jury.

The prosecution disagreed that there could be a proper plea of self-defence.

After that submission was overruled by the judge, the defence lawyer urged the jury to return a verdict of not guilty in favour of his client, pointing out that even if the accused had lied about his defence, it was the duty of the prosecution to establish a case against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt.

International property rights, cost of text books must be addressed

– President Ramotar tells UN Secretary General Global Initiative on Education Meeting THERE must be investment by countries in their education sectors if there is to be development; President Donald Ramotar highlighted, when he addressed a meeting of Champions of the United Nations Secretary General’s Global Initiative on Education.

The Guyanese Head of State said, “There is enough evidence to show that countries which have developed the most are not necessarily the countries that have the most natural resources, but the countries where you have a high education standard”.

President Ramotar was selected to be a member of the United Nations Steering Committee to examine the world’s education system and make recommendations for its improvement.

The Guyanese Leader added that it is essential that both boys and girls are educated to ensure that countries and the world move

forward. The fact that Guyana has the highest number of nursery school enrolments in the Caribbean, universal achievement of primary education and is on the path to attaining universal secondary education within three years were mentioned by the President.

The quality of education, President Ramotar said, was improving in Guyana with trained teachers alone moving from 58% five years ago to 75% at present.

“We want to raise the standard of education and we are investing quite a lot in the physical infrastructure- the schools and the facilities. We’re trying to help with developing more critical skills, life skills in our people, and we want to ensure the relevance of the education system towards the national focus. We are trying to do that by extending education levels in all parts of our country”.

Another important area President Ramotar spoke of is Govern-

ment’s investment in equipping persons with technical skills, but the challenge remains of ensuring sustainability and affordability, enabling each child to reach his or her full potential.

Intellectual property rights and the cost of textbooks remain a challenge that needs to be addressed, said President Ramotar. “This is something that the international community will have to look at, in order to ensure that developing countries are not left behind as far as quality is concerned”.

The availability of technology was another challenge mentioned by President Ramotar and he explained that while Government has embarked on the “One Laptop Per Family” programme, further support would be welcome, “so that we could have access to other education opportunities in our remote areas where we could use technology,

in order to deliver education to our people, in every part of our country”.

In closing, President Ramotar said that the UN Secretary General could continue to rely on Guyana to persist with various initiatives in the sector, with

the international community.

Referring to the figures which indicate that millions of children are deprived of a basic education, he explained that a lot of it is tragic, and can be attributed to international politics.

“Peace is very vital to ed-

ucation, peace and education are linked. We will not be able to achieve these goals that we are setting ourselves...we all have to work for peace as a precondition to delivering quality education to all our people”.

Solar electrification of remote communities hinges on Corporate Social Responsibility

By Clifford Stanley THE private sector in Guyana can provide support for the electrification of remote hinterland communities out of a sense of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

This is the premise of a project funded by Latin-American Energy Organization (OLADE) and being implemented by the Barbadian Consulting Firm Atom Solutions Inc. and local EMPRETEC in collaboration with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs (MOAA) and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

The project aims at providing solar electrification for remote communities through sponsorships of services or direct financing by the local private sector and even private individuals, it was disclosed during a seminar on CSR yesterday at Cara Lodge Georgetown.

The presenters were Dr. Erwin D Edwards, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Atom Solutions Incorporated and Mr. Corwin Hunte of EMPRETEC. Dr Edwards acknowledged yesterday that 75% of the homes in the hinterland have access to electricity either from generators or from solar systems provided by the Hinterland Electrification Unit (HEU) of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). He said that the

remaining 25% are also being dealt with through the OPM. COMMUNITY FACILITIES He then clarified that with this OLADE-backed project, the targets for electrification in the communities will not be the homes of individuals but specifically the shared facilities in these communities such as the community center or the central area where the residents can gather and do craft work at nights or watch movies - facilities that serve entire the entire community.”

“This is what is now needed,” he said, adding that the form of electricity to be provided was solar power not intended for heavy use such as powering industrial equipment but for contributing in some additonal way to improved quality of life of the villagers at the community level.”

The idea of seeking the direct and financial assistance of the local private sector has been supported by OLADE as a form of international assistance for the challenges facing Guyana with respect to electrifcation of the hinterland.

OLADE will give a large percentage of the money required for these types of projects but wants local partners, local commitment, particularly from the local private sector, hence the move to get the

participation of the private sector or “Corporate Guyana”, Edwards said.

“CSR is the tool that we are trying to use; we are trying to get the involvement of local companies based on their desire of wanting to help; of wanting to be charitable; of wanting to give back to their fellow Guyanese even though the act has no obvious financial benefits for them,” Edwards said.

He disclosed that the seminar yesterday marked the conclusion of the first phase of the programme for electrification of hinterland communities using CSR. CSR MODEL “We have developed a CSR model that may fit Guyana ; identified corporations that will be potential partners; contacted companies interested in expressing CSR; have identfied costs, held discussions with the MOAA, OPM etc! and have identified three communities for pilot projects.”

The three communities identified as prototypes are Powaikuru in Region 1 (Barima/Waini), Kangaruma in Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and Shulinab in Region 9 (Upper Essequibo/Upper Takutu).

These projects will cost approximately US$50,000 each.

Edwards said that the second phase of the project, now

about to commence, will involve actually acquring direct financing or provision of services from the local private sector to get the three projects on the road.

He said that once this support is forthcoming at least one should get started by the end of this year with implementation being done by the HEU of OPM. He added too that these three were the first and that services will be provided for other remote hinterland communities once the local private sector gets fully involved in supporting the initiative.

CSR in WI CRICKET Hunte said that good examples of CSR at work was the support to the West Indies Cricket Board by companies such as DIGICEL, Cable and Wireless CARICOM and others to ensure that West Indies cricket continued to be successful.

The support of Kiddies Cricket by Scotia Bank was another good example of CSR at work.

He said: “Where we are now is that we are looking for firms to sponsor communities; to come on board and make some commitments. They don’t need to fund an entire project they can fund to the extent that the company can afford to contribute,” Hunte said.

Travelspan suspends service out of Guyana from tomorrow

TravelSpan has announced that it would be suspending its service out of Guyana from Saturday,September 27, but is in the process of finalising a new arrangement with another airline.

Following a press release dated September 24, it confirmed by announcement that “Travelspan is pleased to announce that it is in the process of finalising a new arrangement with another airline in the Guyana Market.”

Recently, the airline has been plagued by inconsistent service which saw a significant number of cancelled and delayed flights that caused major inconvenience to customers and continued losses to TravelSpan. The company also noted “Vision Airlines, effective September 27, the company will be discontinuing its General Sales Agent (GSA) status.”

Travelspan emphasises that all passengers booked to travel after September 27 will be protected with full refunds and offered the service of an alternate carrier. In the interim, Travelspan will be finalising arrangements for customers’ monies to be held in escrow. This precaution

was taken so our customers would not be left stranded as with the case of previous carriers after they discontinued operations” the company release stated; but they noted that the escrow facility will take approximately 14 days to process refunds and prepare cheques for customers.

Regarding passengers who paid for tickets in Guyana, the company is seeking to re-book them or offer full refunds. “While on one hand the monies are protected, we do understand the inconvenience for the customers to wait for their refunds to be processed,” Travelspan related.

The Guyana Chronicle took the opportunity to speak with a few persons who frequently travel with Travelspan, and asked if they would still have confidence in Travelspan when the airline returns. It was unanimously disclosed that persons presently have lost all confidence in the airline, but if they return to the market, even though it will take some time, confidence could be restored. One individual noted: “If Travelspan returns that will be good, since they haven’t left us high and dry like the others, but right now

I will not consider travelling with them.”

The company had recently trained 14 Guyanese flight attendants and had told the public that it was here to stay. In early 2003, Guyanese passengers were left stranded when the company had again pulled out of the market at that time. It was alleged that the lease for the carrier the company was using at that time had expired and the lessor had reclaimed its plane.

Travelspan will announce details of the arrangement with the new carrier in the coming days.

Embrace 21st century business practices: GCCI President urges entrepreneurs THE Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) yesterday hosted a one-day entrepreneurship workshop at Duke Lodge, Kingston, Georgetown.

The aim of the workshop was to provide participants with an understanding of fundamental aspects of entrepreneurship and some practical methods used by entrepreneurs.

In his remarks, GCCI President Mr. Lance Hinds urged that persons recognise the importance of these workshops.

He noted that the position of the GCCI and the future of the economy depend on the potential of businesses, as it hinges on better growth and diversification of the private sector.

Hinds posited that it is the only way the economy would deliver positive revenue creation which will assist in social and economic improvement.

In 2014, the rates of growth and development of the local economy is still seen as less, when compared to other regional economies. There is therefore a lot of work to be done for further improvement.

The GCCI President encouraged participants to embrace 21st century busi-

ness practices rather than be tied to the traditional practices of decades ago.

He stressed that local businesses must focus on getting out to the pricedriven international market, instead of staying in the local market.

Hinds underscored that the GCCI has established a framework, within which initiatives for private sector expansion are being improved and discussed.

The GCCI believes that the role of entrepreneurship in the transformation of the economy is to put out new products and ideas.

Hinds opined that this will bring success and build better businesses, noting that success in a business would not happen through a miracle; a lot of hard work must be done to ensure the development of good businesses.

He also encouraged persons who may have potential ideas for businesses to give it a try, as failure should not be an option in achieving success in business. Moreover, they should think positively while attempting this.

The GCCI, `Hinds asserted, is committed to finding ideas and to working towards a better private sector and the workshop

was one such initiative to assist young entrepreneurs and to provide clarity on the principles of entrepreneurship and guidelines to how they perform.

He reiterated that it is not an easy task to start a business from scratch,it requires hard work and dedication, because “What you put in is what you get out.”

He concluded that the importance of global marketing and brain- sharing to come up with new ideas to improve would prove very beneficial.

SECL formally informed of Developments in the generation capacity in contract termination CONFIRMATION of termination of the contract for design and construction of the proposed Specialty Hospital has been forwarded to the embattled contractor, Surendra Engineering Company Limited (SECL).

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the formal letter of termination was sent to the principals of Surendra Engineering Company Limited (SECL) by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Mr. Leslie Cadogan.

In the meantime, the investigations into the circumstances surrounding the contract’s termination are continuing, according to Crime Chief, Mr. Leslie James.

SECL’s contract for the design and construction of the proposed Specialty Hospital began in September 2012, after a bid of US$18.1M. VIKAB Engineering Consultants Limited, held a 12-month

contract as a consultant on the project.

VIKAB Engineering, according to Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, was working with a local evaluation team when irregularities and contract violations were uncovered.

These alleged breaches forced the termination of the SECL engagement on the Specialty Hospital. SECL has had its contract terminated by the Government of Guyana earlier this month.

The administration announced its intention to move against SECL after citing what it termed “deep concerns” over the execution of the contract, both as it relates to technical shortcomings and suspicion of fraud.

The Government of Guyana, since June this year, had been engaging SECL on a number of issues regarding allegations of fraud and financial irregularities. Initially, the

Government’s concerns were related to delayed milestones, and inadequate accountability

by SECL for public funds the company had received on signing the contract with the Ministry of Health.

Subsequently, the Government of Guyana discovered that SECL’s representative in Guyana had submitted a fraudulent document, purporting to emanate from the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. The fraudulent act

by SECL has since been confirmed by the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.

The start of the investigation came after a dossier of documents was submitted to the police by Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr. Anil Nandlall, with a letter requesting such a procedure.

When the contract was terminated, Nandlall noted that the course of action to be taken will include: ter-

mination of the contract and engaging the police; and requesting an investigation into the alleged fraud, both of which actions have already been taken.

He had stated too that there was the likelihood of pursuing civil litigation against the company for compensation, damages and breach of contract.

Reports indicate that to date, the structural designs for the project have been completed, while the architectural designs are currently being reviewed. Physical progress has been seen on the essential site preparation which is some 75 per cent completed. On the building foundations 361 piles have been supplied and 235 piles have been driven.

The current administration has made clear that it has lost confidence in the capability of Surendra Engineering Company Limited.

The No. 1 Diesel Generator at the Kingston 1 Plant, which is undergoing planned major overhaul remains on schedule to return to service on Sunday, September 28.

Rights of the Child Commission hosts Empowerment Workshop

MORE than 60 youths selected from work-study assignments attended a special empowerment workshop held recently by the Rights of the Child Commission at the Sophia Training Centre.

According to a press release by the Commission, this workshop is the third engagement of The Sophia Training Centre by the Rights of the Child Commission for 2014.

A number of mock interviews were conducted based on the principles of interviewing strategies discussed; it aimed to acquaint the participants with professional job interview expectations and strategies.

Addressing the gathering, Speaker of the National Assembly the Hon. Raphael Trotman, told the participants of his own life, which as he emphasised was not without significant trials and tribulation and urged them to capitalise fully on the opportunities available to them.

Freddie is a ‘jackass’, says colleague KN columnist Seeram POLITICAL activist and Kaieteur News columnist, Mr. Freddie Kissoon, who is no stranger to controversy, has apparently ruffled the

feathers of another wellknown Kaieteur News columnist, Mr. Ralph Seeram.

Kissoon criticised Seeram’s friend, Mr. Oscar

Ramjeet, in one of his daily publications - criticisms that Seeram found to be unfounded.

“You can’t communicate

with a jackass, which incidentally is what I called his attacker some three years ago,” Seeram said, taking Kissoon to task in his last column.

The column, under the headline ‘From the Diaspora… cheating spouses, lovers etc., and character assassination’, stated that Ramjeet’s character was “attacked by a self-styled intellectual, political activist” who pens more fiction than facts.

Seeram said, “Last Friday, the jackass who thinks he has a monopoly on opinions attacked Ramjeet again.

The problem with this looney, (he actually said in an article that he is crazy) is if you express an opinion that does not fit his tunnel vision view of the world, he feels

that he has the right to attack your character.

“His world is black or white, you either support the PPP [People’s Progressive Party] or you are against the PPP, and his whole world revolves around the PPP. He thinks everyone should share his obsession.”

The columnist went on to outline what he believed to be the achievements of Kissoon, citing that: “He spent over 20 years as a mediocre lecturer at University of Guyana living off the Guyanese taxpayers, repeating the same thing. His writing skills are limited to criticising the PPP Government, and if your views are not in conformity with his warped thinking then you are a PPP supporter.”

that having a university education does not necessarily make you an educated person and he has proven this to be true,” Seeram said.

The publication of the inhouse conflict has now left many wondering over the reasons scathing onslaughts between two columnists were allowed by Editor-inChief Mr. Adam Harris.

One insider expressed the view that Harris deliberately allowed Seeram’s column to pass muster since he has had many problems with Kissoon in the past several years.

Kissoon, however, enjoys the support of the owner of Kaieteur News, Mr. Glenn Lall - a fact that angers Harris, according to an insider.

Pedestrian killed crossing road at Waller’s Delight POLICE are investigating the fatal accident which occurred at about 09:00 hrs Wednesday at Waller’s Delight Public Road, West Coast Demerara, which resulted in the death of pedestrian Simon Bachu, of the same village.

Investigations revealed that the pedestrian ran over the road and was struck down by a motor vehicle.

He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital,

where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

ARMED ROBBERY In a separate incident, Anil Kumar called ‘Black Shirt’, 42, of No. 62 Village Squatting Area, Corentyne and Satesh Jainauth, 18, of No. 55 Village Squatting Area, Corentyne, were charged on September 23

with robbery under arms.

The men allegedly robbed Dalchand Rampersaud, 34, and Alexis Isaacs, 33, both of 147 No. 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, at No. 60 Village, Corentyne on August 26, 2014.

The duo appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on September 23, 2014, before Magistrate Ravindra Singh and were remanded to prison until October 01.

Opposition seems divided - Clement Rohee

By Ravin Singh GENERAL Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party, Clement Rohee, on Wednesday at his party’s weekly press conference said that the Opposition parties appear to be “divided” as it relates to their current political position.

According to Rohee, who appeared amused at this disclosure, “one [party] seems to be going to the East and another one seems to be going to the West,” adding that he is waiting with “fainting breath” to see how they will end up.

“I think it was the famous Jamaican singer who spoke about war in the East and war in the West…so I am waiting with fainting breath to see how they will end up,” he said.

The General Secretary observed that AFC Leader Khemraj Ramjattan’s claims of “90 pieces of silver” being shared out to three Members of Parliament (MPs), specifically APNU MPs, would have been communicated behind closed doors if the two parties were seeing eye to eye on the no-confidence motion.

He said further that Ramjattan’s interaction with Opposition Leader David Granger is a clear indication that the two parties seem to be on a “divided course”

“He would have called Mr. Granger or walked across to Hadfield Street and say look I have this information on three of your MPs,” Rohee said.

However, seemingly entertained by the actions of the Opposition parties, Rohee who continued to chuckle as he commented on the issue, compared the actions of AFC and APNU to that of “Indian Soap Operas and “Bold and the Beautiful”.

tions if the No-confidence Motion is tabled and passed in the National Assembly next month, Granger last Friday at his party’s weekly press conference refused to answer on numerous occasions, reiterating that his party is ready for Local Government Elections.

At an APNU press conference last Friday, he was emphatic in expressing his confidence that no APNU MP would fall prey to the alleged “buy out” by the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Also, the APNU leader highlighted that he was unaware that there was even an offer to “buy out” MPs by the PPP. “I don’t know who made it up, or where it came from,” the Opposition leader told reporters, adding that there has been no discussion between the PPP and APNU to hold off the no-confidence vote.

The National Assembly comes out of recess on October 10, and when a sitting is called, the No-confidence Motion, tabled by the AFC, will be up for debate.

Last Friday, the shocking revelations were made by the now 22-year-old man who claimed that at the age of 13, he was molested by the Speaker.

PM: Passage of AML/CFT Bill grounds to call special Parliamentary sitting

PRIME Minister and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Samuel Hinds, contends that the passage of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) (Amendment) Bill is important enough to consider having a special sitting of the National Assembly.

“It is something we can consider recalling Parliament to get done,” he told the Guyana Chronicle on Monday.

Mr. Hinds’ comments are ahead of the completion of the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) draft report on Guyana’s compliance with international standards. The report, which is expected to address the effectiveness of the country’s anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism framework, will be completed before the end of the month.

the international watchdog body made it clear that the purpose of that targeted review would be to examine the most significant deficiencies in Guyana’s AML/CFT framework that pose a risk to the international financial system.

The letter also indicated that Guyana would be given an opportunity to review the draft targeted review, and to have a face-to-face meeting with the Americas Regional Review Group (ARRG).

In a letter dated July 9, 2014, FATF officially confirmed its decision to commence a targeted review of Guyana prior to its October 2014 plenary meeting; and

“I will have to be written to asking me to consider this. On my own I cannot decide what the parties will consider urgent or of national importance to warrant a special sitting,” the Speaker said.

Chairperson of the Committee, Ms. Gail Teixeira, disclosed that the next scheduled meeting

is slated for October 15, having been moved from the initial date of October 10.

The last suggested dates for meetings of the Committee were July 8, 10 and 30, all three of which were rejected on the basis on the unavailability of Opposition members sitting on the committee.

Meanwhile, General-Secretary of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Mr. Joseph Harmon, told the Guyana Chronicle that the party has received the October 15 notice and will be present at the meeting.

“We have a notification from Ms. Teixiera for a meeting on October 15. On that date we

will see what happens,” he said yesterday.

The APNU Member of Parliament (MP), who sits on the Select Committee, added that the Partnership has always indicated its willingness to participate in the work of the Committee to ensure that Guyana has strong and enforceable laws. “This remains our position,” he stressed.

However, the fact is that until the Committee meets, the AML/ CFT (Amendment) Bill will remain in limbo.

At its next meeting, between October 20-24, 2014 in Paris, France, the FATF is expected to discuss the results of Guyana’s targeted review.

NA Town Council staff in ‘gift of life’ donation

M U N I C I PA L s t a f f a t tached to the New Amsterdam Town Council were among donors who gave “a gift of life” during a voluntary blood-donation drive, which was included in the 123rd anniversary celebrations of the township.

An initiative of the town’s administrators, in collaboration with the Berbice Regional Health Authority (BRHA), the exercise sought to sensitise locals about the importance of do-

nating blood.

Human Resources Manager Ms. Merlyn Henry noted that the council wanted to give a lasting gift which will save a life,that in turn could become an asset to the community.

Eleven units of O negative blood were mostly extracted from donors, she said.

Meanwhile, Berbice Blood Bank recruiter, Ms. Candy Archer, told this newspaper that persons

are not cultured to blood donation, and as a result the BRHA is conducting a massive sensitising exercise across the Berbice region.

Currently, focus is on the New Amsterdam Technical Institute and the New Amsterdam Multilateral school.

Ms Archer, though heartened by the response of the citizenry at the first blood donation drive, said they were a few deferrals, such as those who had a low haemalocrit [iron] level, and were

on medication.

With respect to the low haemalocrit level, she noted that it fluctuates daily, and as such it does not mean that the donor is anaemic , however a donor may increase his or her haemalocrit level by eating foods rich in iron such as dark green vegetables, red meat, raisins or by taking multivitamins that contain iron.

In a plea, Archer said there is no substitute for human blood which is required

for premature newborns; people with sickle cell disease and leukaemia; victims of automobile accidents; cancer; open- heart surgery patients and kidney transplant patients, among others.

She said too that most blood donations are processed and available for use within 72 hours. After collection, red cells can be stored for 35 days, plasma can be frozen and stored for 12 months, and platelets are usable for only five days. Also,

blood given to babies cannot be more than five days old.

She said the short life span of platelets and the “five-day fresh” standing for blood used in babies creates a continual ongoing need for fresh blood.

The BRHA organiser added that the exercise seeks to attract 100% voluntary, unpaid donors, because the incidence of blood- transmitted disease is much less in blood drawn from volunteers.

Cane harvester to face trial for sexually assaulting 13-yr-old SHELDON EDWARDS, who, it is alleged sexually, penetrated a 13year-old girl, will face a jury of his peers at the next sitting of the Berbice Assizes.

The ruling was made

by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus after she found that a prima facie case, based on the evidence of the prosecution, was made out against him.

Particulars of the charge stated that on April 1, 2013 at Pepper Street, Heathburn, Edwards engaged in sexual penetration of a 13- yearold girl.

Reports reveal that it was on Easter Monday, when the

child opted to watch a movie instead of going kite- flying with her siblings .It was during this period when the defendant visited and began fondling the child, before inserting his penis into her vagina.

Her screams resulted in her mother, who was outside, rushing to her aid and the accused was seen moving from atop the child, as blood gushed from between her legs .

The alleged victim was subsequently taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she was seen and examined by a medical practitioner.

One serious offence committed daily, although crime declines – Police ‘B’ Division Commander

NOTWITHSTANDING the reduction in criminal activity in East Canje following the gunning down of notorious criminal Deodat Seecharran alias “Popcorn,” earlier this year, one serious crime is committed daily in Berbice.

This is according to Police ‘B’ Division Commander, Brian Joseph.

In a document containing comparative figures of serious crimes, issued to members of the Berbice media during a press briefing with Berbice’s top police administrators, it was recorded that at the end of July 2014, a murder occurred every 18 days, while break and enter and larceny offences occurred each alternative day.

However, it must be noted that although the police did not record the kidnapping of the nine-day- old baby boy, which was taken from his mother Sandra Mc Lean on May 24 in its analysis, one such incident had occurred resulting in the alleged child abductor Bibi Hussain, called “Deb-

bie,” being charged with abduction. She was granted $300,000 bail following a successful petition before Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Berbice High Court., It must be noted that there has been an overall 13 percent decrease in serious crimes when compared to the same period of 2013.

However there has been an increase in robberies, which included robbery un-

der arms, and robbery with aggravation.

Amongst the crimes on the decline in the Ancient County are rape, burglary, larceny from the person, and robbery with violence.

However, commenting on the statistics, the assistant commissioner declined to reveal the new strategies implemented by ranks to combat crime, but noted that the strategies have been successful,as manifested by the

decrease in serious offences in the division .

“The decrease in crime is the fruit of collaborative police work from the Criminal Investigation Department along with the gathering of intelligence,

and support from the general public,” he revealed.

“We get a lot of information from the members of the public, and this is as a result of the several community outreaches which we have held in the division over the past months.”

With reference to the Number Two Sub-Division which runs from Whim Village on the Corentyne Coast to Orealla, Corentyne River, Joseph noted that the area was not being neglected , even as he recalled protest action by some who opined that the police had been unable to adequately protect and serve their community.

“We have concentrated most of our resources in that area…the area was never neglected .It is not that we have neglected other areas.

We are working with the resources that are disposable to us,” Joseph asserted.

He noted that a previously troubled area was East Canje, which almost vanished to crime, but following the dismantling of criminal networks and the killing of Deodat Seecharran called “Popcorn,” crime has significantly reduced in that community.

Furthermore, ‘B’ Division Crime Chief Assistant Superintendent of Police Terrace Paul , interjecting , noted that many of those who have been involved in criminal activity were from East Canje communities.

Explaining, he said that shortly after the death of Seecharran, two other known criminals were shot in their buttocks during a surprise attack in December 2012 , resulting in a plunge in the serious- crime figures.

“After then, we were not getting any robberies at all,” he boasted.

THE A Partnership for National Unity political party on Tuesday staged protests in the three townships of Berbice.

The demonstration was held to press the ruling People’s Progressive party to host overdue local government elections, which were last held in 1994.

Consequent upon the request of the party, country- wide protest action has been arranged and some political supporters in New Amsterdam “downed tools” and staged a one- hour protest in front of the Regional Democratic Council Office in New Amsterdam.

PPP/C calls on Guyanese to reject Granger’s threats of protest and civil unrest

- and ‘let us continue to unite for a better Guyana’

THE governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) has indicated that, contrary to the boastful outbursts by the main Opposition APNU that their protest actions were successful, reports from the ground tell a different story.

“Reports indicate that the turn out by Party Leaders, activists and supporters was very poor. In Georgetown there were no more than 50 persons in a picketing exercise, while in the outlying municipalities, participation ranged from 20 to 8 persons,” the PPPC said in a statement Wednesday.

It noted that sections of the Media, particularly Stabroek News and Kaieteur News, “sexed up the protests” to help create the impression that the protest actions were impressive and had an impact.

The PPP/C said Granger’s threats must be ignored by all Guyanese, especially the good people who everyday do a hard and honest day’s work to provide for themselves and their families and to build a strong economic foundation for their future.

“Granger and his colleagues in the PNC have become desperate and will resort to all means to disturb the peace and good order in our country,” the ruling party stated.

It said history is replete with experiences regarding the type of protests and civil unrests organised by the PNC. “Those who have short memories will recall the physical and emotional hurt that many suffered, during the Agricola protests two years ago. That event was

preceded by the protest at Linden a few months earlier. One can recall the PNC protest in 2001, when they unleashed the “Mo fyah” campaign. Before that we had six months (December 1997 to June 1998) of protests, marches and civil disobedience which was followed in 1999 by the ninety days (90) GPSU strike and protest.”

Incidentally, and as a form of calculated support for Granger’s recent call, Patrick Yarde has threatened that the GPSU will embark on “nationwide industrial action”. And not to be outdone, Hamilton Green joined the protest call with his “bury Sooba” protest.

According to the PPP/C, there is no denying that political protest action hurts and harms the common working man and woman in particular and the country in general.

“Not only can we expect physical injuries to people and an escalation of crime, we also expect capital flight and economic stagnation. It is to be recalled that as a result of protests in the mid and late nineties, Guyana experienced economic stagnation and a slowing of the growth rate,” the PPP/C stated.

It noted that the Private Sector Commission has already alerted the nation to the negative impact of protests on business and investment.

As regard Granger ’s claim to fame in respect of public safety and security,the PPP/C said Granger should be the last to talk about such matters since while talking about peaceful protests, at the same time he continues to stoke the furnace with a view

to heating up the political atmosphere, “Mr. Granger prides himself as the nation’s guru on security matters. However, when his guru-ship on security is matched against his delinquency to secure the safety of his own comrades at Congress Place, how can he guarantee the nation’s security?” the ruling party questioned.

The party has further noted Mr. David Hinds query about “drum beating” when Afro-Guyanese protest and wishes to point out that the issue is not African Guyanese protest per say, it is in fact PNC/APNU/AFC organised

political street protests, and the track record of such political protests and as a consequence, the anxiety and fear which such street protests generate in the context of a multi-racial society and the Constitutional rights of other Guyanese whose personal, private and economic interests must not be affected but respected.

“Hinds writes as though the APNU, AFC and the WPA have a monopoly on all African Guyanese but Hinds should know better especially in light of his personal involvement in the heady days of the Rodney era not to mention the revelations

that the nation is now reading about vis-à-vis the Rodney Commission of Inquiry,” the PPP/C said.

The party said it is apposite to note that despite the APNU/AFC Budget cuts, Guyana continues to see positive economic growth and citizens continue to benefit from the PPP/C Government’s spending on the social and physical infrastructures in our country. It noted that protest and civil unrest can reverse all these gains as it has done in the past. The party said it is also apposite to note that Granger’s protest announcement have nothing to do with Local Government Elections,

rather it coincides with implementation of two important 2014 budget measures.

The payout of education grants of $10,000 for every school child and the positive impact from the $1 billion clean-up campaign as this exercise gets into full gear.

The protest is clearly aimed at distracting attention from these two much welcomed Government initiatives.

In this regard, the People’s Progressive Party calls on all good people who are in the overwhelming majority to reject the protest calls

by Granger and the APNU and “let’s continue to unite for a better Guyana”.

Austrian ceramist puts on c exhibition at National A

CONTEMPORARY ceramics influenced by the modest beauty of nature, done by Austrian ceramist Sigrid Sandker, are on show at the National Art Gallery at Castellani House on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.

Sandker, who holds a Master of Law from the University of Vienna, said that she was honored to be given an inaugural exhibition of her work at Castellani House, speaking at the opening ceremony last Thursday at the National Gallery.

“It was here, in Guyana, that I was inspired to develop my love for ceramics and started doing pottery. Coming to Guyana gave me the opportunity to peruse initial pottery training at the E. R. Burrows School of Art and I also had individual training with Everly Austin,” she related. Upon leaving Guyana in 2011 she trained with Belgium pottery artists Jagueline Leyamns and Veronique Bogaert.

Acting Curator of the National Gallery, Ohene Koama noted how impressive he found Sandker’s portfolio when she expressed her desire to host an exhibition at Castellani House.

He said that her works were different from art that is typically produced in Guyana and the Caribbean and as the exhibition does not use a wide palette of colors, it was appropriately

themed “Simplicity”.

Newly-appointed Chairman of the National Art Gallery’s Board of Directors, Alim Hussain, who also declared the exhibition open, made mention of the long history of ceramics in Guyana. He acknowledged the clean lines and shapes, the wide range from jewellery to paintings, from decorative to utilitarian pieces, in the works of Sandker.

Describing her pieces, Sandker said, “The base of my clay work remains the functional clay pot. However, I do not think that functionality is the only reason for pottery to exist.

Pottery can offer us functional capacity that enables us to sustain ourselves and at the same time the aesthetic qualities that enhance our lives.”

The ceramist, who believes in early art education and so teaches art classes to children, continued, “My focus is on simple shapes and contours. The use of black and white and sometimes a touch of blue emphasize the shapes and the volume of the pieces I exhibit. Generally much of my inspiration comes from nature and the beautiful shapes it creates.”

The detailed art pieces, which are on sale, are finished with different firing and molding techniques and were made at Sandker’s home in Guyana.

Berbice man gets 55 years for killing ‘Scare Dem’ gang member

By Jeune Bailey Vankeric JUSTICE Navindra Singh yesterday sentenced Naresh Ramjohn, called ‘Sadam’, to 55 ½ years’ imprisonment for the unlawful killing of ‘Scare Dem’ gang member Anthony Samaroo.

The crime was committed in 2008. However, the prisoner became a fugitive and was captured in May 2010 for another matter.

It was while he was in the lockups at Central Police Station in New Amsterdam that Ryan Samaroo, the sibling of the deceased, who incidentally was also in police custody, informed the cops of Ramjohn’s involvement in his brother’s demise.

State Counsel Renita Singh had led the evidence of eight witnesses, who testified that on July 2, 2008, Ryan Samaroo was at Overton Dam, Mount Sinai, a squatting area commonly referred to as Angoy’s Avenue, on the eastern fringe of the New Amsterdam township.

The witness had seen the accused and another person, both of whom were throwing bottles as they were exiting a yard, while villagers and neighbours looked on.

Her report said, that the prisoner alleged that on occasions when he and his siblings returned from logging in the Berbice River, this gang would rob them. The deceased and the prisoner lived just a street away.

Munroe said the father of the deceased claimed that his son was very tidy and a great source of help at home. Nevertheless, he confessed that the second of his six children smoked marijuana, and was a bit wayward, but he never molested anyone.

The report also said that Ramjohn was born to Patrick Bhola and Shimoon Ramjohn, aged 65 and 62 years, respectively; he grew up in New Amsterdam, Berbice, where he attended Scotts Primary and Vryman’s Erven Secondary Schools until Form Two. Subsequently, Ramjohn enrolled at Kwakwani Sec-

ondary school after his family migrated to the Berbice River community. However, he ceased his studies and opted to be a labourer.

At age 24 years, he and other family members relocated to Smythfield in New Amsterdam, and subsequently bought a dwelling place at Levi Dam where he lived until the commission of the offence.

However, the house in which the family once lived is no longer on the plot of land which is now covered with overgrown weeds.

Ramjohn, along with his siblings worked as wood cutters in the Berbice River, from where they would transport lumber to New Amsterdam, where it would be sold.

The prisoner does not have a family but has fathered a child who lives in Kwakwani.

Meanwhile, reports emanating from the community contradict that related by the family, and indicated that the accused was involved in drugs and theft.

Ramjohn and the deceased were associates in such activities and subsequently suffered disagreements which resulted in the committal of the offence.

It was noted that after the offence, the siblings of

the accused left the community, allegedly never to be seen or heard again.

Pleading for Ramjohn in mitigation, Defence Counsel Mursulene Bacchus said his client is forty years old, and there has been no previous conviction although he was previously charged.

While he has been in custody since May 10, 2010, the attorney conceded that a life had been lost and pleaded that the sentence be tempered with mercy.

In his brief narrative, Ramjohn said, “Sir, I am innocent of this crime.

Please have sympathy on me,” he rambled, before his lawyer indicated to him to be quiet.

The judge told him: “I am disappointed that you showed no remorse.

The jury has spoken. You have maintained your innocence. Guess this will go to a higher court. Nevertheless, I find that it was a brutal attack. I do find from the evidence that there may be some contribution of the deceased, whatever aggravating factors they were…

My sentence is 60 years.

I have taken off four and a half years for the time you have spent in prison.

My sentence therefore is fifty-five and a half years.”

CJIA’s Aviation Security Officers trained in self defence SIXTEEN Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Aviation Security Officers (ASO’s)successfully completed a self-defense programme on September 24, 2014, that demanded technical, professional and physical expertise in the area of martial arts as a defense against any threat.

The programme, the first of its kind, ran for two weeks.

A second batch will go through the rigorous exercise by a Guyana Defense Force Officer next Monday, September 29, 2014 at Timehri.

According to Alvin Majeed, CJIA’s Senior Aerodrome Officer and head of the ASO Unit, every ASO is required to demonstrate the level of his/her operational proficiency when confronted by a hostile airport user.

He emphasized that the techniques taught are not to harm or injure anyone but to subdue the individual.

“These fighting and defensive techniques were developed and upgraded for our ASOs to help them during both routine and emergency exercises,” he further stated. “We are doing this type of training fighting and defensive - methods in order to protect civilians, airport users, passengers and even airport employees themselves.”

Tonia D’Oliveira, one of the 11 females who participated, said the she feels more confident “as a woman and professional”.

“It was intense and the techniques I learn will go a long way in executing my duties. I am more focused,” she added.

Randy Shurry, who is an ASO for the past four years, said the training opened a door of

knowledge for him and his colleagues.

“We now have a broader scope of how to defend ourselves. The only time I saw martial arts was on television, I am privileged to be part of the real time experience,” Mr. Shurry stated.

Meanwhile, Ivelaw McNaughton recommended that such as an exercise should be done on a regular basis. Similarly, Seon Sertimer, felt invigorated and wished the programme could have lasted forever.

“Apart from learning self defense all of us lost weight,” he admitted.

The ASO Unit was established in November, 2009. The mandate of the unit is to improve security at CJIA on a daily basis.

“We call this arraignment, Guyana is providing the packaged rice and Panama is providing the ships.

So the shipping responsibility is Panama,” Minister Ramsammy was quoted by the Government Information Agency (GINA) as saying.

Pointing out that Guyana has been working with Panama to ensure timely shipments; he noted that obtaining the packaged rice is not a problem. The Minister stated that for the packaging of 5,000 tons, “we have the rice available and packaging arrangements in place.”

Guyana has been advised that the ship should be available in the last week of September for the September shipment, “so it appears the shipping arrangements being made from Panama will target the end of month shipping. That means end of September, October, and November and so on, so that always leaves flexibility to the other man, so it could run into early October.”

“We are ready for Panama,” Minister Ramsammy declared.

He added that the mills being used are the Techno Mill in Eccles and Ansag Rice Mill for the packaging, for this first shipment.

However, he explained that this will not be for all shipments, as in the future all the rice mills that can meet the requirements will be engaged.

In August the deal was announced by the Minster and the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB).

The deal was signed by Panama’s Vice-Minister of Agriculture, Estebana Giron Dias, and the GRDB General Manager, Jagnarine Singh.

The agreement was signed at the Office of the Minister of Agriculture in Panama City and followed a meeting in Colombia between the Presidents of Guyana and Panama.

With this new export for 2014, Guyana is expected to export between 475,000 to 500,000 tons this year and to reach about 550,000 tons in 2015. The actual export target for 2014 was 460,000 tons. The export in 2013 was 394,000 tons.

HE lives by the saying ‘Love the life you live and live the life you love’.

Paul Anthony Charles, born on April 20th, 1986 under the astrological sign of Taurus, is a teacher, dancer, choreographer, stylist, and one who describes himself as determined and ambitious.

He attended Carmel Primary and Charlestown Secondary schools before attending the Global Technology institution. This determined young individual dreams of one day establishing his own foundation to help youths grow and develop. He enjoys spending time with his family members and friends, having long walks, cooking, camping and, of course, dancing.

One of his favourite dreams is to become an international dance choreographer.

Mr. Charles finds himself in a happy relationship with one aspect of the arts -- he is a unique, energetic, and passionate individual who is heading for higher heights. He is no stranger to the performing arts, having represented Guyana locally, regionally and international.

He was the face of the logo for CARIFESTA 10 in 2008; he was privileged to showcase his dancing skills in countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Suriname, French Guiana and the United States of America. He is known as the ‘Dare of Dance’.

He then ventured into the fashion industry and, in 2005, participated in Super Model Search, then in 2006 he participated in Shabeau Face off and placed 1st runner-up. In 2008, he participated in Guyana Model Search and placed 3rd runner-up. In 2012 he tried it once more and captured the 2nd runner-up position. He then participated internationally at Mr. Tourism United Nations pageant in Jamaica and captured the 1st runner-up position. He was given a prize for being the best male dancer.

Paul is now a contestant in the first ever Mr. Guyana International Competition 2014, slated for later this year. His platform for this competition is “Causes and Effects of School dropout”. He believes that every child needs to be educated and that education is the key to success. He noted that, in Guyana, the youths who drop out of school are most likely to be unemployed, homeless, and incarcerated.

Paul is inspired by his mother’s teaching, which is based on striving for success and higher heights through hard work and perseverance.

Indian Commemoration Trust to host epic play ‘Ramlila’

MEMBERS of the Indian Commemoration Trust, with sponsorship from the Guyana Tractor and Equipment (GUYTRAC) company, are all set to present a grand production of the epic ‘Ramayana’.

Entitled ‘Ramlila’, the show will be directed and choreographed by the talented Roshini Boodhoo. The inaugural event will be held at the Indian Monument Gardens at Camp and Church Streets on Saturday, October 4th, 2014.

The Jewan Ka Nritya Dance Group has been working wholeheartedly to make this production a memorable one.

Its senior members have worked hard in producing assisted weapons, bows, maces, and clubs; and have admirably designed and decorated their own costumes, crowns and jewels to imitate the grandeur ambience of the “Treta Yuga” era.

Relating that the spark and enthusiasm of her dancers encourage her to continue working, Roshini would occasionally remind them: “It’s for us, when it’s all finished. We can say we’ve done it, our team and our family.”

The release notes that Roshini has been dancing since she was five years old. Her first stage performance, in 1994, was at the Lenora Primary School, where little Roshini participated in a skit in which she played the role of Mother Sita.

She happily disclosed that, after twenty years, she’ll be playing the role of Sita again.

Bollywood and various styles of Indian folk dances are also being taught when stage performances are on. JKN recently captivated its audience at the Guyana Festival 2014, held at the Guyana National Stadium.

“We have 29 bowlers reported for suspect bowling actions in the current home cricket season and half of them were reported twice, so we have banned around 16 from domestic matches,” director of domestic cricket Inthikab Alam told reporters.

“All these bowlers will not be allowed to play in domestic matches and will go to the national cricket academy to get their actions altered,” said Alam, a former Pakistan captain and leg-spinner.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket said Thursday it will allow suspended offspin bowler Sachithra Senanayake to play domestic cricket as he is making good progress in remedying his bowling action.

The sport’s governing body said in a statement that Senanayake had worked with some experts in University of Western Australia and had made “tremendous improvement” and continues training with his coaches.

In the meantime Sri Lanka Cricket will allow him to play in the local mercantile cricket tournament starting next month as per International Cricket Council guidelines, a significant step for the bowler to return to the game.

The ICC guidelines say a suspended bowler could play domestic cricket with the permission and supervision of the home board.

Senanayake was reported to be having a suspect action during Sri Lanka’s tour to England in May and was suspended from bowling in international cricket in July after tests showed that he was exceeding the allowed 15-degree elbow extension while delivering the ball.

Kuldeep Yadav has taken four wickets in two games for Knight Riders.

KULDEEP YADAV, the Kolkata Knight Riders chinaman bowler, has revealed in an interview that he began his life in cricket as a seam bowler, and that he cried when his coach first asked him to switch to spin.

Kuldeep was one of India’s best performers at the Under-19 World Cup in the UAE, and has made an immediate impact since breaking through to Knight Riders’ first team. Having made his debut for the side during the Champions

MCYS/EBFA U-13 to start tomorrow at Farm Ground THE East Bank Football Association (EBFA) in association with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) will tomorrow kick off an Under-13 tournament, scheduled for the Farm Community Centre ground, East Bank Demerara.

To date, five teams have confirmed their participation in the tournament. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top three teams.

Fourth place will also attract a trophy as will the tournament’s highest goalscorer, best goalkeeper and most valuable player.

The clubs confirming their participation are Soesdyke Falcons, Kuru Kururu Warriors, Agricola Red Triangle, Grove Hi Tech and Herstelling Raiders.

Yesterday, Herstelling assistant coach Paul Sookram and his charges were seen getting the ground

in shape for the tournament. Sookram said that they are excited to have the EBFA and the MCYS host a tournament at the venue which he said they are happy to accommodate.

“We have been trying our best at the Herstelling Raiders FC to keep our youths active in the sport of football and they have been doing us proud. We finished second on the just concluded CULT U-17 league. We also did well in the Trophy Stall U-15 league earlier this year and we are competitive in the Stag Beer division one league.”

Sookram expressed gratitude to the Chairman and members of the Herstelling/Farm/Little Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council for the support they have given so far to make the hosting of the competition a reality.

Dravid praises Chanderpaul’s consistency, technique NEW DELHI, India (CMC) Former India captain Rahul Dravid has praised the consistency of veteran West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, describing him as an exceptional batsman.

The 40-year-old Chanderpaul recently returned to the top three of the ICC Test batting rankings, following his heavy scoring against Bangladesh in the recent two-Test series in the Caribbean.

“You only have to look at his numbers? the sheer weight of them over the length of his career - which is not a short one,” Dravid was quoted as saying in ‘Modern Masters’, a video series by ESPN Cricinfo.

“He’s been consistent, exceptional in all conditions.”

The Guyanese batsman has jumped two places to number three and now lies only behind the top-ranked Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka and South Africa’s AB de Villiers.

Petra Organisation launches lucrative 4th COURTS Pee Wee Football tournament

PETRA Organisation officially launched its annual COURTS Pee Wee Football tournament which is set to kick off on Saturday, October 4 at Thirst Park.

This is the fourth year that COURTS is partnering with Petra Organisation to stage the event and yesterday, the company who is now celebrating its 21st Anniversary, handed over a cheque worth $2.8M to the organisers.

The tournament will cater for children under the age of 11, and involves 24 Georgetown primary schools, playing in a round-robin format.

Prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers along with individual incentives to the player adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goalscorer, Best Goalkeeper and the Most Disciplined Team.

The partnership with the Petra Organisation for the Pee Wee Tournament will bring the sum total to over $5.8M in COURTS’ contribution to Sport during the birthday month and COURTS Marketing Manager Pernell Cummings said the entity is more than pleased to once again support growth and sustainability of football in Guyana.

New Venue chosen for India, Windies second ODI MUMBAI, India (CMC) - A new venue has been chosen for the second One-Day International (ODI) between India and West Indies, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced.

The second ODI of the upcoming series has been switched from Cuttack to New Delhi for “operational reasons” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement.

India and West Indies are due to play five ODIs, three Test matches and a one-off T20 International from next month.

“The match schedule of the series between India and the West Indies to be played in October-November had to be revised due to operational reasons. Cuttack will now host the one-off T20I and Delhi will host the second ODI,” Patel said.

“Vishakhapatnam and Dharamshala will host the third and fourth ODIs respectively. The final ODI will be played at Kolkata.”

The tour starts with the first of the five-match ODI series in Kochi on October 8 with the one-off T20I set for Cuttack on October 22.

The three-match Test series bowls off October 30 in Hyderbad.

Deputy Chief Education Officer Marcel Hudson said that the Ministry of Education welcomes the investment made by COURTS

and endorses the tournament which plays an important part at helping the students to learn from an early age, that there needs to be a distinct balance in sports and education.

Hudson stated that the Ministry has long been an advocate in supporting initiatives that lend to its “keep fit” programme being promoted in every school where it’s now compulsory for students to be active physically which helps to alleviate non-communicable diseases.

The Deputy Chief Education Officer urged students to play fair, stating “you must learn to be good losers and don’t see losing the game as the end of the world. Look at it as a learning experience and what you need to do to win. I wish everyone well and may the best team win.”

Meanwhile, according to coDirector of Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, the tournament will also see a partnership with Banks DIH under their Malta Supreme brand.

Mendonca expressed delight at having COURTS back on board and lauded the company’s initiative for spending more where every team will be outfitted and given at least two footballs each.

A colourful opening ceremony is planned to mark the start of the event at Thirst Park on October 4 from 10:00hrs after which, defending champions St Pius Primary will get into action against J.E Burnham Primary.

Twelve matches are scheduled for the opening day.

Dottin stars as Windies level T20 series KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) – West Indies Women levelled the series after an impressive all-round performance from Deandra Dottin powered them to a sevenwicket win over New Zealand Women in the second T20 International at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex here yesterday.

Dottin grabbed three wickets to upset New Zealand’s batting momentum and returned to smash an unbeaten 40 to lead her side to victory and level the three-match series following Tuesday’s crushing defeat.

Dottin combined with Shemaine Campbelle in a half-century stand as West Indies coasted to 102 for three in 17.1 overs after New Zealand, who lost the toss and were asked to bat, totalled 101 for five in 20 overs.

The Barbadian allrounder wreaked havoc after a half-century stand from openers Rachel Priest and Suzie Bates threatened to take the game away from

the homeside.

The New Zealand collapse began when Bates who struck five fours in her knock of 29 was run-out by Shakera Selman because she was backing up to far.

Dottin destroyed the top order, bowling Sophie Devine for eight, trapping Sara McGlashan lbw for two and capturing the scalp of Rachel Priest for 31.

Priest hit three fours and faced 39 balls in her 62-minute occupation of the crease before she was caught behind.

A poor start by the West Indies saw them slump to 12 for two after Kycia Knight was caught at the wicket for five and Stafanie Taylor mistimed a drive to mid-off when she was on five as well.

Resuming on 134 for 3 in search of 155 for first innings honours, Demerara were bowled out for 338 with Khan contributing 116 and skipper Vishaul Singh 56, while opener Trevon Griffith had earlier scored 53 late on the

opening day.

Jacobs took 5 for 91 in a marathon spell of 43.1 overs and got support from Steven Sankar who took 3 for 48, before their side slipped to 7 for 3 in their second innings, when faced with a deficit of 184 runs, thanks to the bowling of Paul Wintz and Gavin Moriah.

Khan got to his halfcentury shortly after, batting for 110 minutes and facing 108 balls with six fours and one six and at lunch, Demerara were 233 for 3 with Khan on 63 and Singh 48, as they frustrated the Developmental XI bowlers throughout the session, in which they added 99 runs from the 39 overs bowled, while their fourth-wicket partnership stretched to 119.

During the session, Khan struck four more fours to go along with his six, while Singh also got four fours, including a deft dab to third man off his opposite number Steven Jacobs, who used six bowlers

in his attempt to dislodge the pair before lunch, but to no avail.

After the break, Singh got his half-century from 152 balls after 165 minutes, with four fours, before Shimron Hetmyer held a sharp reflex catch under the bat at forward short leg, to remove Singh off the bowling of Jacobs for 56.

He added 131 for the fourth wicket with Khan, who saw the quick demise of Barnwell (4) and Zaheer Mohammed (0) at the other end, leaving his side on 256 for 6, with his contribution being 71.

As the wickets fell around him, Khan grew in confidence to move into the 90s where he stayed for close to 35 minutes before unleashing an authoritative extra cover drive off Hemraj to move to 98, pushing his team to 311 for 7 at tea, with Wintz on 9.

Khan got his century with a four past extra cover off Hemraj, his ninth from the 239th delivery he faced while batting for 286 minutes to go along with his solitary six and even though he lost Wintz

(10), he was not flustered as he punched Jacobs with authority for his 10th four in the next over.

A thin edge through to wicketkeeper Kemol Savory off Sankar was the downfall of Khan at 337 for 9, with his contribution being 116 scored off 257 balls during his 306-minute sojourn at the wicket, during which time he struck 10 fours and one six, before the innings folded with Jacobs removing Moriah (1), leaving Raj Nannan unbeaten on 7.

At the Demerara Cricket Club ground, Berbice placed themselves in a strong position to claim the title, when they defeated perennial whipping boys Essequibo by nine wickets inside two days, earning for themselves an extra two days off.

Resuming at 130-3 in reply to Essequibo’s first-innings total of 173, Berbice were eventually bowled out for 273, a lead of 100 runs, with their skipper and overnight batsman Narsingh Deonarine falling for 93 (11x4, 3x6) while Jonathan

Foo took his overnight 14 to 33 and Romario ShepherdDeJonge supported with 25.

Hemchand Persaud (325), Anthony Adams (2-46), Royan Fredericks (2-67) and Ricardo Adams (2-46) were the successful bowlers for Essequibo, who in their second innings had no answer to the guile and deception of the Ancient County spinners and were routed for a meagre 166.

Losing wickets frequently, Essequibo innings never really looked set to take off and stuttered and stumbled all the way through, as Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, 6 for 34, and Deonarine 3 for 39 destroyed their batting lineup which saw Peters 77 (9x4, 3x6) and Anthony Adams 40 (2x4, 2x6) offer resistance.

‘Vicious’ Vivian back next month FORMER World junior welterweight champion `Vicious’ Vivian Harris is scheduled to lace up his gloves for competition next month.

A source close to Harris told the Chronicle Sport yesterday that the 36-year-old former WBA champion is expected back in the ring late next month, following a six-month break. He is set to fight on October 24 in Colorado Springs for the USNBC title against an opponent to be named.

Harris, who now campaigns in the welterweight division, is on a four-fight winning streak since losing to Brian Rose in October 2012 in England. He has defeated (via points) Shaka Moore, Danny O’Connor and Jorge Paez Jr. The orthodox fighter became Guyana’s youngest world title holder when he stopped champion Diosbelys Hurtado on October 19, 2012 in Huston, Texas. PAKISTAN cricket officials yesterday suspended 16 domestic bowlers with suspect actions in a major crackdown against chucking following the ban of ace spinner Saeed Ajmal.

LONDON, England (CMC) Glowing tribute has been paid to cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards, one of the most destructive batsmen of a dominant era for West Indies.

Some of the most decorated names of West Indian cricket’s golden era joined in the special tributes to Richards during a dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

They included former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and former team mates Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Gordon Greenidge and Colin Croft.

“It’s not often I’m moved but this has been a truly special evening and something I won’t forget for a very, very long time,” said Sir Viv. “I’d like to thank everyone who has come here tonight and all the speakers for their incredibly kind words.”

Former England internationals Derek Underwood, David Gower, Mike Gatting, Geoff Miller as well as broadcast legends Tony Cozier and

Sir Trevor McDonald joined in paying tribute to Richards known as the ‘Master Blaster’.

Tributes were also played on video screens from Michael Holding, Bob Willis, Alan Lamb and Ian Botham, Richards’ closest friend in the game and godfather to his son.

“Tonight at Lord’s, a very special place for Viv, he was honoured in front of 550 fans, friends and former colleagues,” said Paul Robin, Chief Executive of the Lord’s Taverners.

“If he didn’t realise how special a player and human being he is, then he should after the event!

It was a fun night for all and in raising funds for two good causes. We are supporting work both here and in Antigua that is close to Viv’s heart.”

The dinner raised nearly £100 000 for the United Kingdom’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, the Lord’s Taverners, and the St John’s Anglican Cathedral Restoration Project in Antigua.
