RESIDENT David Granger yesterday urged the people of Bartica to lead the country’s “green revolution.”

The President was in the mining community to participate in the 2015 National Tree Planting Day exercise.

The event was organised by the Ministry

of Agriculture and was held at the Bartica Community Centre Ground. Among those in attendance were Minister of Indigenous People’s Affairs Sydney Allicock, Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder, Minister within the Ministry of Education Nicolette Henry, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection Simona Broomes, and Minister within the Ministry of Communities Keith Scott.

As the President announced that National Tree Planting Day will become an annual event, he told the large gathering that he wants Bartica to be a model town for not only Guyana, but for the world at large.

“It must also be a model town, for environment, for ecology, energy. We want to work with NGOs, miners, RDCs [Regional Democratic Council], and private citizens to make sure that this revolution does not falter, so we can show the world what we mean by the green economy,” the President said.

The entire green economy plan, the President explained, forms part of his administration’s overall plan for the long- term development of Guyana.

“This green economy as you’ve already heard is aimed at your long- term well-being. It will reduce social inequalities, it will promote sustainable environmental practices,” he added.

However moving forward with this plan, the President said his government will adopt five strategies. These will include the promotion of sustainable exploitation of the country’s natural resources.

“We must have alongside mining, a programme for reforestation, a programme for solid waste management and the disposal of all these toxic chemicals,” the President said.

Reminding residents of the OMAI cyanide spill some 20 years ago, the President called on residents to be the watchdogs for their environment.

The second strategy, the Head of State said, must be to ensure that there is a good solid waste programme.

“You have to ensure that solid waste is carefully disposed of and I hope that in weeks to come, we will be able to introduce recycling practices,” he added. It is also part of ►Please turn to page 8

TRENGTHENING G u y a n a ’s a r m y reserve is critical and is high on the government’s list of priorities, President David Granger has said.

“In terms of the militia, it will be much stronger; my own preference is to have a stronger reserve and a small, well trained regular force,” he told the Guyana Chronicle in an interview Friday.

What is now called the “reserves” was called the Guyana People’s Militia and was created in 1976. The People’s Militia had an everincreasing strength from around the 1980s to 1990s.

However, that strength has faltered. “…it has declined now and I have examined that matter and I have discussed it with the Chief- of -Staff and part of the problem was that it was altered from being a semi-autonomous force under the Defence Act,” said the former Chief –of-- Staff of the Guyana Defence Force.

The Defence Act established two forces, the

regular force and the reserve force; the reserve force was called the Guyana People’s Militia. However, over time, the name was changed and the reserve component of the force was “subordinated” to the regular force as an infantry battalion.

“So rather than become a separate force, it was given a sort of minority position and for some reason or the other the numbers declined to maybe one tenth of what it was and it is now being built up again,” Granger assured.

Asked about the Defence Force’s push to become modern, President Granger said what government can do is guided by budgetary limitations.

“As far the equipment is concerned, I would say Guyana’s strength now is in the quality of its manpower - the quality of the members of the force - and a lot of emphasis is being placed on training.”

The President believes that more emphasis needs to be placed on the so-called Technical Corps, pointing specifically to the Air Corps,

the Coast Guard and the Engineer Corps.

President Granger said that there must be “improvements in aviation

and our maritime assets.”

But budgetary constraints are likely to prevent that goal from materialising in the short- term.

“We have a budget and we want to ensure that our expenses are kept within certain limits,” said President Granger.

He said the Technical Corps will be part of the Defence Force’s service to the public, admitting that budgetary constraints are a reality but he believes that with time, the force will be at its full strength.

“Yes, within budgetary limits there will be significant improvements in the Defence Force,” the president said, responding to questions on the modernisation and improvement within the arms of the GDF. With respect to buying “much more equipment,” Granger said “I would say that we are going to develop our Technical Corps, for example, the Engineering Corps will be able to participate in infrastructure projects in the hinterland,

which is going to be one of the important functions.” He added that the Air Corps has a tradition of search, rescue and relief, and medicalcasualty evacuation.

S i m i l a r l y, P r e s i d e n t Granger believes that continuous training is critical to the strength of the force.

Asked of his view on bilateral and multilateral military cooperation, Granger said there has been some level of cooperation, most of which has been with Caribbean defence forces, the United States of America (USA), Brazil, and China.

Many persons from defence forces in the Caribbean Region and South America come to Guyana for Training at the Colonel Ulric Pilgrim Officer Cadet School (CUPOCS) at Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri.

Russia says to step up air strikes in Syria

(Reuters) RUSSIA said on Saturday it will step up air strikes in Syria, escalating a military intervention which Moscow says is weakening Islamic State militants but which Western powers say aims to support President Bashar al-Assad.

A senior Russian military officer said Russian jets based in western Syria had carried out more than 60 sorties in 72 hours across Syria. “We will not only continue strikes... We will also increase their intensity,” said Andrei Kartapolov from the Russian

army General Staff.

Russia’s air campaign in Syria, where a U.S.-led air coalition and fighters on the ground from regional states are already entangled in a four-yearold civil war, has drawn strong criticism from the United States and its allies.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 39 civilians had been killed since the start of the Russian air strikes on Wednesday. It said 14 fighters, mostly Islamic State militants, had also been killed.

Russia said in the last 24 hours it had targeted a command post and underground weapons bunker near Raqqa, the eastern Syrian stronghold of the Islamic State militants, as well as a weapons store in Maarat al-Numaan.

Guatemala mudslide leaves hundreds missing

(BBC News) RESCUE workers in Guatemala are digging through rubble from a mudslide that hit a village not far from the capital, in search of hundreds missing.

At least 26 bodies have so far been recovered from the village of El Cambray Dos, rescue services say.

Heavy rains swept a torrent of boulders and mud onto houses on Thursday, 15km (nine miles) east of Guatemala City.

Relatives have been receiving calls and texts from people trapped under the rubble, reporters at the scene say.

Survivors have been taken to makeshift shelters. Rescuers temporarily called off the search late on Friday because of heavy rains, AP news agency reports.

Julio Sanchez, a spokesman for Guate-

mala’s volunteer firefighters, said 26 people had died, including a number of children, and another 36 people were taken to hospitals.

One man was pulled alive from the rubble after more than 15 hours after the mudslide hit.

But Alejandro Maldonado, the head of the Guatemalan disaster agency, has warned that as many as 600 people could still be missing.

He said that number of people was believed to be asleep in their homes when the mudslide occurred, he added.

El Cambray is surrounded by steep hills that tower over the houses which are mostly set in the valley bottom.

Mr Maldonado said in a radio interview that the forested hills had been weakening for some time and had collapsed largely because of recent heavy rain.

Hurricane Joaquin: Hunt for missing cargo ship off Bahamas (BBC News) THE US Coast Guard says it has resumed its search for a cargo ship with 33 crew that vanished in Bahamian waters during Hurricane Joaquin.

The 224-metre (735ft) El Faro, with 28 Americans and five Poles on board, was last heard from on Thursday and was reported to be taking on water.

The ship - which was travelling from Florida to Puerto Rico - was also believed to be listing at 15 degrees.

Joaquin brought heavy rains to the Bahamas, damaging a number of houses.

There have been no reports of casualties so far.

The now-weaker Category Four storm - with sustained winds of up to 210km/h (130mph) - is moving away from the island nation in the Atlantic.

US officials said they believed any threat to the East Coast was fading.

Political leadership in perspective

I

N politics, leadership matters. Unfortunately, here in Guyana, we have not been blessed with the most persistent enlightened political leadership. While we would not readily admit it, our admiration for our respective leaders is grounded more in ethnic insecurities than in measurable leadership attributes.

Yes, one cannot separate assessment of leadership qualities from our ethnic reality, but it should not be the only criterion by which those qualities are assessed. Many of us wonder in frustration why the younger generation is not as enamoured of our political titans of old. Does that tell us more about the quality of leadership than of the quality of younger people?

This is not to say that we have not had potentially good leaders who, from time to time, have stirred the imagination of our nation, or parts of it. We have had the Burnhams, the Jagans and the Rodneys who, in their separate ways, have left their marks on our segmented consciousness. Burnham and Jagan led the children out of bondage, and in the process carved out their own niches; and Rodney inspired hope for an alternative niche. But, for some reason, none of them have lived on politically in any big and profound way in the collective consciousness of the nation. Good leadership, like good music, must cut across the generational divide.

The truth is that they may have been victims of the decline of the charismatic Caribbean leader, whose god-like relationship with the masses ensured an almost uncritical hero-worship. Today, that regard exists mostly in the nostalgia of the older generations, or in the party faithful. That charisma, while serving the function of good-feeling, was in the final analysis not transformative. The intent may have been noble, but the legacy is far from noble.

At some point, that reality would have to soak in.

This brings us to the present reality. David Granger is a new type of leader. He is not of the charismatic tradition, nor is he cut from the new technocratic cloth that seems to dominate Caribbean leadership these days. Although a military man by training, his politics do not flow from that authoritarian mindset. If ever there was a pragmatic Guyanese leader, that person would have to be David Granger. At least, he comes closest to it.

In policy terms, he is not deeply ideological.

Despite attempts at being the party boss, he is not a party man by inclination. His initial ambivalence about partnership politics did not stand in the way of his emerging as a champion of this new politics.

To understand the essence of Granger the politician, therefore, one has to grapple with the challenges of contemporary Guyanese and Caribbean politics. Our society begs for order in our persistent chaos. It dreams of a leadership that tries to understand our inherent complexities. In many respects,

Displaced Linden call centre workers begin receiving payments TOUCAN Connections, the St. Kitts based Call Centre, which abruptly shut its doors in August has begun disbursing funds to some of the ninety-plus laid off workers.

Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection Simona Broomes on Friday confirmed that some of the workers are in receipt of monies owed to them by the Call Centre.

“Yes, some workers have begun to receive payments. I am in the process of checking with all the employees to ensure they have indeed received monies and to ensure it is all the money owed to them,” Broomes told Guyana Chronicle briefly.

This publication understands that many of the payments received were not complete. Many of the laid off workers who were with Toucan Connections since 2007 are wondering when they will receive the remainder of what is owed to them by the company.

Money paid to the workers range from as low as $6, 000 to $140, 000.

The money was placed into the bank accounts of the former workers sometime last week.

“I am not in a position to provide more information on the payments; my ministry is currently in the process of verifying the information received. I cannot say if all of the persons have been paid,” said Minister Broomes when asked to state how much money has been paid so far to the laid off workers.

Guyana Chronicle spoke with two of the affected workers yesterday who confirmed that payments have been received by some workers. Rashaunda Aaron, a 20 year-old former worker told this publication that $6, 000 was placed into her Citizen’s Bank Account. Aaron said she is unaware of how much money she is to receive from the Company.

Asked how she was aware that the money was in her bank account, the 20-year-old said she met one of her supervisors on the street and was told to check her account for payment.

“They did not contact me; they said nothing to me. I saw the supervisor on the road and she told me to check for it in the bank. I only saw $6,000,” the former Customer Service Representative told Guyana Chronicle.

She said while employed, she

received approximately $9, 000 per week as wages. Aaron started working with Toucan in January.

On the other hand, Aaaron’s colleague Kiara Fraser has not received payment. She told this publication that she heard other persons are in receipt of payment. “I have not been paid,” she said noting that she was not contacted by any official of the Call Centre indicating same.

Investigations into the sudden closure of the St. Kitts based Call Centre have discovered that the company kept no records; employees received no contracts, and were not provided with pay slips. Minister Broomes said the report into the investigation is ready but the situation is not a simple one and additional ground work is being done.

Approximately ninety persons employed by Call Centre, many of whom are young people, were laid off in August without being informed prior and more so, without receiving their benefits.

Government has said it is working to see how best it can provide release to the laid off workers.

Health Minister promises ‘serious action plan’ to curb domestic violence LAMENTING the prevalence of violence against women and the high mortality rate in Guyana, Minister of Public Health, Dr George Norton, has said the administration will leave no stone unturned in its quest to address these issues.

Having assumed power some four months ago, the current administration has recognised violence against women as a human rights violation, and has noted the need for a serious action plan to counter it.

Addressing the Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO’s) 54th Directive Council in Washington earlier this week, Dr Norton told regional health ministers and experts that crimes such as trafficking-in-persons, murders, rapes and domestic violence are still rampant in Guyana.

“It is evident that current enforcement measures are inadequate to protect women,” he said, although he noted that the Guyana Women Miners organisation (GWMO), along with a number of other organisations, has been proactive in fighting violence against women.

Through the GWMO, which until recently was led by current Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Simona Broomes, several women and teenage girls have been rescued from sexual enslavement in Guyana’s hinterland, where the population is principally indigenous, and gold mining and logging are the main sources of employment.

“Our government has noted that, despite the passage of legislation such as the Domestic Violence Act and the Sexual Offences Act in our country in the past, violence against women continues to be a national epidemic. This is so largely because of weak enforcement and the absence of a coherent national plan,” Minister Norton told the Directing Council.

Although no specific studies have been done here, the Public Health Minister said, Guyana is aware of findings from Canada and by the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which suggest that partner violence can be an important contributor to maternal mortality.

EXTREMELY HIGH “Mortality rates among our indigenous populations are extremely high, and as a person of indigenous heritage, this is extremely painful to me as an individual.

This does not mean that I am not pained by the high rates among fellow Guyanese of other ethnicities, but the disparity among the indigenous peoples would indicate some amount of inequity, and (it) flies in the face of our goals to achieve universal access to health services,” Dr Norton told the Council.

He also said that the current government will work assiduously, and will leave no stone unturned, to arrest and reverse both the high maternal mortality and violence against women.

“We see the need for a national action plan on violence and the introduction of educational and enforcement initiatives to eliminate this scourge, and (we) recognise PAHO’s proposed strategy and plan of action on strengthening the health system to address violence against women as the framework which can be used to develop our own plan.

“Of course, we recognise that we cannot do it alone, and therefore wish to appeal to PAHO and our brothers and sisters of this region to assist us in our own efforts to address violence against women, as well as in each and every one of our member states,” Dr Norton said in his informative presentation.

“Around the world, and in our hemisphere, violence against women is epidemic in its scope and impact,” said Cuauhtemoc Ruiz, acting Director of PAHO’s Family, Gender and Life Course Department. “It is a public health problem, and it needs a strong response by health systems.

We need to do more to prepare health providers to care for women affected by violence, and we need to step up research and programming to learn how best to prevent violence against women”.

“Worldwide, one in every three women will be raped, beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime, usually by an intimate partner,” declared US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, during the opening session of PAHO’s 54th Directing Council.

PEPFAR continues to support fight against HIV/AIDS “THE United States of America remains committed to Guyana’s aim to build a health system that is responsive to the needs of Guyanese citizens, especially those most vulnerable to Stigma and Discrimination.” So says, PEPFAR Coordinator

The PEPFAR Coordinator made these remarks two Saturdays ago, as she delivered the feature address at a Rally in celebration of Texila American University’s 5th anniversary at the Woolford Avenue- based institution in Guyana, where some 200 medical students and faculty staff were gathered.

Having been asked to speak on one of the U.S. Government’s contributions to Guyana’s health- care system, Ms. Joseph De first congratulated Texila American University and its students on their achievement, starting with seven graduates in the first instance, and now looking forward to graduating 400 this year.

“Your contributions are really what matters . Healthcare workers are one of the biggest contributions to any society in the country, so you are making a tremendous contribution. Without health- care workers the health and productive needs of people would not be met,” Ms. De Does said.

She went on to quote President Obama as saying that the only way to achieve important health goals is through health- care workers. “There are simply no short cuts,” she affirmed.

U.S. Contribution to Guyana HIV/AIDS programme And commenting on one of the United States

contributions to Guyana – the topic on which she was asked to speak-- the PEPFAR Coordinator cited the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. “The U.S. supports this agenda. We help support the Government of Guyana in developing its Stigma and Discrimination Policy.

“We also help reduce Stigma and Discrimination by training health- care workers. Other significant contributions include helping the National AIDS Programme achieve a reduced HIV prevalence; [and ultimately] a reduction in AIDS-related deaths.

“We support Guyana’s efforts to supply life-saving HIV treatment, and we have supported the provision of more than 350,000 HIV tests and Counselling Services.

“Overall, the U.S. remains committed to Guyana’s aim to build a health system that is responsive to the needs of Guyanese citizens, especially those most vulnerable to Stigma and Discrimination,” Ms. De Goes said.

The U.S. official said that PEPFAR’s primary focus is HIV, adding “I believe our contributions have supported growth of the [Guyana’s] health system,” She opined that Texila American University and its students are positioned to continue that legacy.

“Being medical students places you in position to advocate for and promote innovations in health care, accountability, political will and human rights. As the future health- care workers in Guyana and wherever you may serve, you have the responsibility to support the right of any person to access the highest achievable standard of health,” the PEPFAR Coordinator affirmed.”

And concurring that health- care workers are agents of sustainable development, and that healthy populations make for a productive work force, Ms. Ge Goes declared: “Your educators who shape you really are agents of sustainable development. You play an essential role also in the broader social- economic development context.”

She said that PEPFAR’s primary focus is HIV, adding, “I believe our contributions have supported growth of the health system.”

And alluding to the many patients along the way reaching out to be treated with human dignity, De Goes commented, “You can institutionalise a curriculum that addresses and teaches you, the students, the importance of having human rights; the importance of

creating an environment where everyone feels entitled to access care and create a generation of providers that would change the way we do business… eventually bringing an end to HIV/ AIDS and other diseases, Ms De Goes concluded.

Chief Medical Officer (Ag), Dr. Jeetendra Mohanlall CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER Meanwhile, Guyana’s Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jeetendra Mohanlall, on behalf of the Minister of Public Health Dr. George Norton and Dr Karen Cummings who were both unavoidably absent, brought regards and warm congratulations to the institution on its signature accomplishment.

Dr. Mohanlall acknowledged that as Guyana continues to wage an unrelenting battle against HIV/ AIDS, much has been accomplished with the support of key international partners, namely, the Government and people of the United States of America offering financial and technical assistance through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and executed by agencies within the United Nations system. For this, he expressed appreciation.

International partners’ support, coupled with strong and effective leadership at the local level, the steady commitment of Guyana’s health sector, the private sector and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have been able to initiate a marked reduction in the prevalence of HIV/AIDS locally, he said.

Whereas Guyana was at one time trailing Sub-Saharan Africa, the countries hardest hit with HIV/AIDS, we now have a prevalence rate of 1.1 per cent, as out-

lined in the Health Vision 2020 Strategy.

Dr. Mohanlall observed that Guyana like any other developing nation assiduously strides to provide a population with optimal, equitable and accessible health- care services. As a result, the Ministry of Public Health has evolved into one of the largest and most diversified ministries in the country.

“We have major hospitals situated in each region and specialise in many services including public/ private arrangement and initiatives and a host of clinicians who have benefited from both local and international training for improved competence and cooperative care.

He said organisations such as the Caribbean Heart Institute have also given Guyana recognition as being progressive where specialised services are concerned.

And there are plans for the improvement and expansion of health services, all guided by the proactive and holistic strategy – the Health

American/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) consultant. The chief medical officer acknowledged the support and technical cooperation given by the PAHO/WHO whose assistance made possible, the successful completion of this critical document.

HIV/AIDS aside, he hinted at some of the overall challenges faced by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Dr. Mohanlall pointed to: maternal and infant and mortality rates, suicide, obesity, mental illnesses, and the burning issue of “retaining healthcare professionals.”

The CMO said the ministry feels strongly that the challenges faced are not insurmountable and that addressing these could be greatly enhanced by fostering new and strengthening existing collaborations with key partner institutions. “ I am pleased to say that one such partnership exists with Texila American University, where the ministry has benefited from partnerships with universities al-

In 2011, the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report stated that a number of 2015 targets have been reached and that the country is on track to reach targets for HIV/ AIDS, education, water and sanitation.

Health Vision 2020 cites the spread of HIV/AIDS as slowing, with prevalence declining from 7.9 per cent in 1995 to 1.1 per cent in 2011, and the disease status now being more characteristic of chronic disease, rather than an epidemic as in 2004, before the scaling up of interventions.

The CMO acknowledges that Guyana has a lot of support from PEPFAR, with the UN Agencies rolling out support for different programmes and key populations such as: PAHO/ WHO, which places special emphasis on TB, Malaria and Tobacco; the CDC– Prevention of Mother-toChild and Health Information System; Transmission and Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) ; USAID

DISEASE BURDEN According to Health Vision 2020, health outcomes in Guyana have improved steadily over the past decade, reflecting the strength of commitment of the government, and Guyana’s development partners to meeting national and international targets for health, through increased investments in health and social spending and the appropriateness of the health interventions taken.

The success of partnerships, notably PAHO/WHO in response to communicable diseases has resulted in the control of malaria, tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/ AIDS. As a consequence, Guyanese life expectancy has now moved from 63 in

– until recently, on Youth Friendly Health Centres; International Labour Organization (the ILO)- the removal of Stigma and Discrimination Against HIV, among others.

Within the UN System generally, and in the UNDP in particular, the inter-relationship between HIV/ AIDS and the attainment of development goals are fully recognised. UNDP’s corporate strategy on HIV/ AIDS therefore, works for sustainable results based on five service areas: Advocacy and Policy Dialogue; Capacity- Building; Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS, Human Rights and Information Multi-Media Technology. Working as a synergistic package, these service areas support, strengthen, deepen and intensify the response to HIV/AIDS, a UN official said. (Shirley Thomas)

Hugo Chavez Centre to become model of self-sufficiency - tree-planting exercise starts farm project

SELF-SUFFICIENCY is critical to reducing poverty and ensuring food security and the Social Protection Ministry is embracing this drive with a thrust to ensure the homes and care institutions under its mandate are so equipped.

The process began yesterday with the Hugo Chavez Centre for Rehabilitation and Reintegration at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice, Region 5, which hosted a tree-planting exercise to commemorate National Tree Planting Day under the theme, “Plant a Tree for a Greener Economy, Keep Guyana Clean and Green.”

Several persons led by Minister of Social Protection Ms. Volda Lawrence, planted trees in the large compound of the centre to kick-start an extensive farm that will be developed with fruits, vegetables, fishes and poultry to not only supply the centre, but also other homes under the ministry’s purview.

“Today is symbolic, because it’s a fresh approach to improving people’s lives, to improve the lives and productivity of those who reside here, which is in keeping with a main pillar of our campaign theme to improve the lives of every Guyanese,” the minister said.

She said that it is critical that Guyana is self-sufficient not only to ensure food security, but to reduce our enormous food- import bill, something that is proving quite problematic for the Caribbean.

“We are fortunate in Guyana where we can plant and reap fruits and vegetables at our hand- reach and we sometimes take it for granted,” she said, adding that in many countries few fresh produce are available.

She noted that the ministry decided to start with the Hugo Chavez Centre for Reintegration and Rehabilitation, because at present the centre has large land space that is under-utilised. The project is receiving the support of the regional administration, as well as residents of the area and

the Guyana Fire Service, but will be maintained daily mainly by residents of the centre under the stewardship of consultant Carol Smith-Joseph.

Emphasising that the upkeep of institutions that care for the less fortunate is quite expensive, Minister Lawrence said the move to self- sufficiency would help to reduce this financial cost, while at the same time help residents to acquire meaningful skills to be reintegrated into their own homes.

“We not only want to take people off the streets, but we

want to give them back their lives and their independence, so that they can return to their families and society,” she said.

Among those planting trees today were Administrator of the Centre, Mrs. Dharamdai Subhan; Regional Executive Officer Mr. Roderick Edinboro, Regional Education Officer Mr. Owen Pollard, Officer-in-Charge of the Fire Service at Onverwagt, Mr.Clayton Pantlitz and residents of the centre.

Similar activities will start at other homes, including the Mahaica Children’s Home, the minister said.

“Much of the energy we are using can be generated by sustainable means, by sun, water, biogas and wind, so let us promote the sustainable energy initiatives,” the residents were told.

Speaking of the last two strategies, the President said all efforts must be made to promote the use of sound ecological services, and green technology.

“I want you to promote sound ecological practices, by encouraging the growth and replanting of forests, so it is up to you,” President Granger told the gathering.

Meanwhile, the President congratulated the effort of Barticians for taking up the challenge in leading the way for making Guyana a green country.

He also lauded the effort of the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We have come here today to congratulate you on your role as leaders but also to thank you for accepting this responsibility. I will come back to see how well you are leading so you have a responsibility to all of Guyana,” he said.

Also on the occasion, Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder congratulated the residents of the community for taking up the challenge which was thrown out to them a few months ago by the President. Minister Holder said this exercise is one of many tasks that need to be accomplished for a green status to be achieved.

“The Government of Guyana has decided as a general policy to promote the development of a green economy.From an agricultural standpoint, investing in a green economy has

the potential to enhance food security, reduce poverty, improve nutrition and health and create rural jobs while reducing pressure on the environment,” Minister Holder pointed out.

It is for this and many other reasons, he said his ministry is pleased to collaborate with other agencies, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communities, the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs and other organisations in making Guyana a green country.

The National Tree Planting Day initiative was well received by Barticians and scores of persons turned out at the Bartica Community Centre ground with plants to participate.

Schoolchildren from schools around the community also came out to participate, saying they were encouraged by the President and their teachers to be a part of the exercise.

He added that “There are [foreign]officers that are trained here, in fact there are Brazilian officers in Guyana who assist us with our training and we send officers on courses in other countries.”

Over the years however, Guyana has developed a “very strong training base” the President added, noting that Guyana has not been short of international military cooperation with respect to training. He believes that with cooperation through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI), Guyana has

been able to benefit significantly. The United States makes a significant contribution towards the CBSI with more than USD$200M being committed to the funding since 2010.

The cooperation includes assistance in the areas of maritime and aerial security cooperation, law- enforcement capacity building, Border/ port security and firearms interdiction, justice sector reform and crime prevention.

On Friday, following the acceptance of letters of credence from the new U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloway, President Granger spoke of cooperation under the CBSI. “We have some level of cooperation. Today I received the

The Real State of Villages

… something has to be done fast

I HAD the privilege of visiting several African-Guyanese villages as part of the Cuffy 250 Committee’s community outreach. During those visits, we got an opportunity to talk to villagers about the state of their communities and their views on contemporary politics. We also got to see for ourselves the real state of the villages; and what we discovered was shocking, even for those of us who interfaced with those villages on a regular basis.

It became clear to us that the change of government removed the lid on a lot of pent-up frustrations. The communities had mastered the art of masking their hurt and neglect.

I mention the above to draw attention to one of the consequences of one-party government, especially those that last for as long as our two previous governments did.

I am, of course, talking about fear. It would shock the country if we knew the level of fear that had developed in the African-Guyanese community over the last two decades. And Indian-Guyanese activists have also reported fear in their communities, even if it was manifested differently. Individual fear is bad enough, but collective fear is crippling. It consumes the entire community; it kills resistance, and induces accommodation with power. Apathy becomes the norm, and people turn to fun as an escape from the social realities.

All of this happened in the African community over

the last two decades. The physical infrastructure in almost all the communities we visited is in an advanced state of disrepair. Roads, kokers, bridges, canals and school buildings are all in terrible condition. In some communities, there is not a single street light.

Education is in equally bad shape. School-dropouts are widespread; libraries are non-existent; most communities do not have community centres and playgrounds; and where they exist, they are surrounded by bush and are dysfunctional. Health centres are often absent; and where they are present, they are understaffed, always out of drugs, and sometimes inaccessible to residents, given their physical condition.

Unemployment and underemployment, in most cases, represent more than half of the communities, in particular the youth. Many NGOs have gone into the villages and did a lot of skills training, which have not led to jobs or business enterprises. There are very few thriving businesses owned by villagers. Often, the villages cannot be sustained by the very weak buying power of the communities.

One of the shocking things we found was the absence of community organisations -- no youth clubs, no sports organisations, no functioning PTAs. The previous administration used the Community Development Councils (CDCs) as substitutes for community organisation. Often, these CDCs consist of a few PPP sympathisers who encouraged a begging mentality in the villages; there was no need to organise

for self-reliance anymore.

We found that the NDCs were the most hated organisations. They have become sources of enrichment for councillors. Corruption is open and unchallenged. People fear the chairpersons, who often operate as gangsters and dons rather than community leaders.

Community lands and other resources are leased without any consultation with the residents.

How could people live under such conditions for so long? It is clear that some communities have learned to live on the edge — in survival mode, but the price is high.

Although the government has changed, the scars from two decades of beating are fresh. It is difficult to get people in the villages to work together. The community spirit is on life-support. People are comfortable working in small, isolated enclaves. The level of mistrust of fellow villagers is high, they almost instinctively reject collective efforts.

They boast about what they do in small spaces, and often are oblivious to the fact that the larger space continues to rapidly decline.

Something has to be done in those communities — and fast!

Jagdeo meets with Guyanese in New York

- gives controversial version of local events LEADER of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, participated in a Town Hall-style meeting in New York on Friday evening, during which he embraced opportunity to give the diaspora an overview of the May 11, 2015 elections which resulted in the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) suffering defeat at the hands of the APNU+AFC coalition.

Via press statement, his party reported this matter yesterday, and said that those present sought an analytical review from the former President.

“The enthused crowd wanted a more in-depth overview as to what happened with the tabulating of the ballots, (which) caused

the PPP to lose the government,” the release disclosed; and in response, Jagdeo said there were several inconsistencies in the overall electoral process, even as he alleged that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has developed a habit of showing partisan behaviour.

Nevertheless, the Opposition Leader told the packed hall that the PPP/C is in full support of the David Granger Administration with respect to the Guyana/ Venezuela border issue. The PPP/C, he said, will never shy away from national issues such as this.

Jagdeo urged that the positive relationship which the PPP/C Government had established with

Venezuela should continue to grow under the current Administration.

“Our rice farmers got an abovethe-market price for their rice. The current APNU regime shattered this agreement within their first 100 days (in office), and today our rice industry is in shambles,” Jagdeo reportedly said.

Contrary to what Mr Jagdeo declared at that meeting, it was the Venezuelan Government which chose not to renew the rice agreement with Guyana.

THE Georgetown City Council and the local PanAfrican Movement are engaged in talks to end the impasse occasioned by City Hall’s demolition of two concrete walls that belong to the local Pan African Movement during a City Hall environmental enhancement campaign.

Mayor and City Council’s Public Relations Officer, Debra Lewis, made this disclosure and said that a key representative of the Movement, Dr. Joycelynne Loncke, confirmed that talks are under way.

A new twist has unfortunately enveloped the situation, with the caravan

belonging to the Pan-African Movement being forcibly evicted from the controversial spot it had occupied on the Merriman Mall to be dumped in Le Repentir Cemetery at the mercy of vandals and other persons. Moreover, the flowering and beautifying shrubs that had been planted on the mall have been bulldozed and the surface has been levelled by heavy earth moving machinery.

Repossession of the reserve land (between Oronoque and Light Streets) that had allegedly been leased to the Pan-African Movement seems to be irrevocable.

Dr. Loncke had, two Saturdays ago, expressed outrage on learning of the demolition of the walls,

removal of a 20-foot steel container, and destruction of trees and flowering shrubs newly planted on a portion of the Merriman Mall that had allegedly been leased to the Movement in 1994.

She sought an audience with the Deputy Mayor and the Town Clerk in the absence of Mayor Hamilton Green, who is out of the country. Town Clerk Royston King is insisting that he was unaware of the reserve being leased to the Movement by the Council.

Dr. Loncke is contending that the Movement will not take this matter lightly, as tremendous losses have been incurred in the process of the demolition exercise and trimming of trees, which

alleyways and reserves which persons and businesses have been occupying over time.

Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that releases have been issued to this effect. “Generally, people have become so callous with the use of public spaces that, even though given permission, some would have abused it,” she said.

DEMOLITION CONTINUES But although locked in conflict with the Pan-African Movement, the Town Clerk has issued a stern warning that City Hall is in the process of reclaiming all parapets,

Lewis recalled the many incidents in which people had actually fenced off alleyways or built gates and padlocked them to deny the council access to the public spaces. The result, she said, was that when the sanitation crews needed to access the areas to do cleaning, they were unable to so do.

Other persons have planted or built structures on the council’s reserves, and they don’t intend to move.

“And so council will be reclaiming all parapets and reserves,” she said.

Asked if that pertains to reserve lands occupied in areas such as North and South Ruimveldt, the PRO said it’s

a relative matter, since spots boosting development may not be targeted.

The PR official said that going after people who encumber parapets and alleyways is stressful, provocative, and impedes progress, such as preventing the clearing of the areas and desilting of drains therein.

She mentioned a house in Kitty where the property owner took in a considerable portion of M&CC land as his personal property. The result, she said, was that some 15 to 20 houses are heavily inundated whenever it rains, because the sanitation workers are unable to access the area to do draining and desilting works. “ We a r e f a c e d w i t h complaints every day,” Lewis said. She said there are 11 main drainage canals in the city, and since many of these are heavily silted, clearing them becomes very challenging. The 11 main drainage canals are located at: Meadow Bank; Cane View Avenue; River View, Ruimveldt; Sussex Street; Princes Street; Lamaha Street; Cowan Street; Muneshwer’s (Water Street); Croal Street, and South Road.

Meadow Bank, South Road and Croal Streets have thus far been cleared, and the workforce is now concentrating on Princes Street.

Lewis has expressed concern over the wanton disposal of refuse, and the abuse of the waterways by citizens. She said, “…some people may not like what we’ll do, but we have to do what we have to do to have them comply with the city’s by-laws.” (Shirley Thomas)

YES WE CAN – turn around the sugar industry, but…

G UYANA has the second largest land space designated as productive arable land within CARICOM (Haiti has 1 million hectares vs. Guyana’s 0.42 million). Although only a fraction of its potential arable land is exploited, the country produces a highly diverse array of agricultural goods. Of this lot, raw- sugar production remains the largest formal employer in the nation after some 50 years of independence.

Today, the sugar industry sustains the lives of some 69,000 people directly and indirectly. Although sugar has contributed less to the GDP over the years (pegged at fewer than five percent of GDP in 2014 compared to 16 percent in 1993), it still contributes vital foreign currency to the nation’s coffers. In 2014, sugar contributed some US$88 million to the Treasury. Before 2012, developments in the sugar industry were literally determined by the preferential price provided by the EU that accounted for just less than 90 percent of our sugar exports. However, since the end of 2012, Guyana can only now sell into that market at world market prices, free of duty. This is our new reality. The world market price for sugar is around 13 cents, so we can expect something marginal for our exports into the EU markets. Guysuco's production cost is more than double the average sale price for our exports – hence the necessity to transfer G$12 billion in 2015 into the industry.

Guyana under the Jagdeo administration, embarked on a plan to modernise the industry to raise output and reduce production cost. As a result of them bungling the entire process since 2007, output declined and production cost skyrocketed. And they are gallivanting all over the country promising a return to power. To do what exactly? Officially bury the nation and its people?

The biggest joke is Team Jagdeo's attempt to lecture the people that the sugar industry is in a mess. Because of whose policies? Certainly not the four-month old Granger / Nagamootoo Government. The Guyanese people did not attend school on a Sunday only; they know who are the real culprits.

On top of that the Jagdeo and Ramotar administrations have not accounted to the taxpayers (especially the sugar workers) for the G$25 billion that the EU provided to the sugar industry between the years 2007-2013 to partially fund this transition project from preferential prices to world market prices. During this period, the Jagdeo and Ramotar administrations spent some G$57 billion on a modernisation project that failed. As a result of the sugar modernisation plan,

the unit cost of sugar was pushed from US$0.21 per pound in 1995 to US$0.40 in 2014.

One of the most significant challenges that remain in the industry is how to make the Skeldon Factory more efficient. The leaders in the Jagdeo government chose to pay more to engage Chinese builders rather than Indian builders, although the Chinese builders had zero experience in building a sugar factory. In Latin there is a saying: "Celari vult sua furta Venus" meaning "Venus desires her theft to be concealed." Who the cap fits, let them wear it. That is why any utterance today that the Skeldon Factory has achieved its highest production since October 2012 can be classified as loose talk and has to be looked at with much suspicion, since we have not established a trend of above average production. Let us see the annual production for the Skeldon Estate at the end of 2015 before we start blowing the conk-shells.

But if one re-looks at this entire construction of the Skeldon Factory, it is characterised by mass acts of project incompetence, which was complemented by gross managerial weaknesses and local engineering supervision oversight. If that was not maladroitness squared, the board then found the merit to appoint one Dr. Raj Singh to the CEO position, who had a track record of not being able to turn around a cake- shop much less a sugar industry. There were also pockets of inefficiencies being tolerated in the industry along with intense labour disputes. From day one the “Turnaround Project” was doomed to failure. When GAWU and the AFC were highlighting some of these facts, the ghost writers at the then Office of the President launched the “carnival of defamation” against them. But the truth shall never die.

First of all, the Gopaul board was just not prepared to take the hard decisions required to restructure this industry. It is hoped that today the Thomas board will face the challenges head-on and engage talented outsiders to help them analyse and structure the decision after intense scenario analysis. Over the years, the merit of the argument that insiders at Guysuco know best has lost its sucrose potency.

Guysuco’s challenges have to be faced head-on with massive intervention by outsiders, not more insiders.

When I was a restructuring specialist at Barclays in the UK in those difficult financial days of 2008-2010, one of the first things that was done on portfolios of failing businesses, was to help the leadership of those companies cleanse themselves of insiders who were stuck in their ways. Outside technicians who

understood cash flows and how to work the cash flows in a turnaround environment, were brought in to marshal the process through the turnaround period.

The new team at the top will have to be empowered to act and must use financial analytics to make decisions after consulting with the technicians at the front end of the business - the workers, the soil scientists, the agronomists, the field supervisors, the factory supervisors, the agricultural engineers. There is no other option.

I am deeply concerned that all I was getting from the leadership both last year and today are more enunciations on the problems with little focus on the solutions. All of Guyana is fully aware that Guysuco is technically insolvent, owes a ton of debts and is selling sugar at less than half of what it cost to produce the stuff. What is new? It is time to move on to the solutions. Where is the business-turnaround blueprint?

But in framing the solutions we always have to factor in that Guysuco serves a bigger purpose to the Guyanese society than economic. For one, the sugar industry is in the forefront of the battle to keep water off the land on most of the coastal plains. In fact, the sugar industry subsidises our flood-control cost to the tune of billions annually by maintaining most of the coastal waterways between the backlands and the sea. Secondly, large numbers of rural folk earn their livelihoods because of the sugar industry. In the absence of the sugar industry whole villages will become ghost towns leading to socio-economic meltdown with its associated negative consequences. Just ask anyone on Linden, Kwakwani or Ituni how life has changed for them as a result of a meltdown in the bauxite industry. We cannot repeat those mistakes again. Then there is the training component. Many of our top agricultural and engineering talent came out of the sugar belt because of the quality of exposure and training they received at Guysuco. Therefore, assessing the needs of the sugar industry requires more than sugar technicians or sugar academics. It requires outside-the- box, “turnaround business leadership” that properly understands the socio-political environment of the industry. It requires leadership that is totally focused on the future and who are prepared to take tough business decisions without upturning the socio-political apple cart.

In this sugar series, I plan to "flesh out the issues not from a "problem tree perspective," but with a focus on possible solutions and outcomes.

The Generation Next 2015 graduating class GENERATION NEXT is dedicated to empowering members of communities through training, recreation and developmental programmes to realise their potential to meaningfully contribute to society.

The administration of Generation Next is proud to fulfil its mission statement, having graduated 37 students at the sixth graduation ceremony on the 25th September 2015.

Generation Next is the education arm of the First Assembly of God Church.

The Generation Next graduation 2015 was an enthusiastic event for the class, as students were encouraged through a song,

poem, and children playing bells. More so, they were inspired by Pastor Wilbert Lee, who addressed them.

Pastor Paul Benjamin gave special thanks to the senior pastor of the First Assembly of God church, Pastor Raphael Massiah, for his initiative, commitment and support over the years.

Pastor Benjamin also encouraged the volunteers and teachers of GENERATION NEXT, who imparted in the lives of the men and women, to continue being involved so that this generation would become agents of change.

Also, Melissa Franklin addressed the audience with the administrator’s report

for the period January to July 2015. Mrs. Franklin highlighted that the Generation Next programmes commenced on February 2, 2015 after a brief period of advertisements. Nine out of the 14 skills-training courses were facilitated during this first half of 2015 -- namely Cookery, Personal Computer Repairs, Floral Arrangements, Cosmetology, Cake Decoratin, Information Technology, Fabric Design, Wood-Working and Graphic Designs.

There was a total of 53 registrants across the various courses, with about 37 of them completing their selected courses.

Mrs Franklin also stated,

as it relates to academics, that Generation Next has expanded its targeted age range (12 – 40 yrs.) to include four years to post-secondary students. Subjects taught included Numeracy and Literacy for both children and adults; Mathematics; English A; Chemistry; Physics; Principles of Accounts & Business; Social Studies; and Integrated Science.

Over the years, facilitators continue to give of their time and resources voluntarily, with muchadmired dedication and commitment. Further, it was with gratitude that the administration welcomed 13 new facilitators. These persons are Maxwell Nurse,

Ann Williams, Wondar Paul, Michael Forde, Alan Adams, Ashna Morris, Yolanda Charles, Tessa Fredericks, June Ann Lee, Yonelle Drakes, Carleen Small, Shaquille Baird, and Judy Williams.

In all, Mrs. Franklin noted that the administration, teachers and volunteers continue to rely on God’s direction as they go forward.

Albeit, Miss Jenell Pierre blessed the graduates’ hearts with a song; a poem was also done, and the First Assembly of God Children's Choir performed a song by the ringing of bells.

Pastor Lee quoted Malcom X, Aristotle, and Benjamin Franklin, stating:

“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”; “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet”; and “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest,” respectively.

He continued to emphasise education, highlighting that education is a great equaliser for a number of reasons: (i) Education unlocks the door to the future. (ii) Education is the key for us to get ahead in life. (iii) With education, we are better off economically; and (iv) the more educated we become, the less likely we will be unemployed.

Miners to begin receiving tax concessions on fuel, equipment IN keeping with a promise to alleviate challenges facing the mining industry, Government has, through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), signed an agreement with the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) that effectively paves the way for small- and medium-scale miners to benefit from tax reductions on fuel and equipment.

Small- and medium scale-miners will benefit from duty-free concessions on imported equipment, and profit from a tax reduction on fuel by 30%, from a high of 50%.

It therefore means that miners are now required to pay only 10% tax on fuel purchased.

At a simple signing ceremony which took place at the Finance Ministry on Friday, October 2, Finance Minister Winston Jordon said the agreement stemmed from a pledge made by the APNU+AFC coalition in its 2015 manifesto under its 100-day action plan.

After defeating the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) in the May 11 Elections, the coalition had, in its budget presentation, listed tax exemptions on fuel and equipment as a budgetary measure to bring relief to the people, in keeping with its promise.

“This is a small and positive step, because it represents the given effect to a promise made by the Government,” Minister Jordan said, as he noted that the step also indicated Government’s willingness to listen and, where appropriate, offer assistance to sectors that are experiencing difficulties as a result to domestic and/or international conditions.

Addressing the issue of large-scale gold smuggling, which continues to eat away at the country’s economic fabric, Minister Jordan said that although former GGDMA President Patrick Harding would have refuted claims that small- and medium-scale miners are engaged in this illegal activity, it is still a major concern, especially if approximately 15,000 ounces of gold are smuggled out of

the country on a monthly basis.

He stressed that major damage is being done to the country’s economy because of this loss of much-needed revenue, which can aid in infrastructural development of the country. “(Do) you know how many schools we could have built with those royalties and taxes? This is not something that anybody can countenance, much less this government.

So we ask, in return, that operators in the sector see to it that they do their corporate responsibility and pay their relevant royalties. Make the relevant declarations and pay the relevant royalties!” Minister Jordan said as he pleaded with miners.

The agreement was signed by GEA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Mahender Sharma; GGDMA President, Terrence Adams; Mr Patrick Harding and the Finance Minister. Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Deputy Commissioner General (ag) Ingrid Griffith signed as a witness to the agreement.

This is the second such concession from which smalland medium-scale miners are benefiting for the year. In January, the then Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment had offered miners a tariff waiver of 10% on diesel fuel imported by GGDMA Trading Inc. for use only within the mining sector. This is in addition to the fuel importation licence that was granted to the GGDMA Trading Inc. to allow for the cheaper importation of fuel. The former Government had also approved waiver of tariffs and duties on equipment and spares.

More adolescents must take their health seriously -- GRPA

ON a yearly basis, more than one million adolescents die from preventable and/or treatable causes, and this constitutes a major concern for health authorities across borders.

The situation is no different in Guyana, where hundreds die as a result of the Human Immunodeficiency Vi r u s ( H I V ) , l o w e r respiratory infections, suicide, interpersonal violence, alcohol and drug abuse; and even injuries sustained from vehicular accidents, among other causes.

In an effort to reduce this high death toll, the Guyana Responsible Parenthood A s s o c i a t i o n ( G R PA ) is calling on the young generation to break the cycle by taking responsibility for their bodies.

G R PA E x e c u t i v e Director, Reverend Patricia Sheerattan-Bisnauth, told the Guyana Chronicle that, for too long, “health has been placed on the back burner”.

She explained that many Guyanese, particularly the nation’s youths, are not capitalizing on health services that are readily available to them.

The adolescent population has consequently been identified by the Health Ministry as a group which rarely visits health facilities to access lifesaving services and information.

Sheerattan-Bisnauth said the situation is so dire that some youths do not even know their blood type, or their families’ medical history. A family medical history can identify people with a higher-than-usual chance of having common disorders such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, certain cancers, and diabetes. These complex disorders are influenced by a combination of genetic factors, environmental conditions, and lifestyle choices, she said.

She is of the view that youths, and in some cases men, are failing to do simple health checks because they have erroneously placed their health at the bottom of their list of priorities.

“For our own good, and our health and wellbeing, it is very important that we get past these discomforts and stigma; because our aim is to live a responsible life (and to) take responsibility for our body, because our body is God-given,” SheerattanBisnauth said.

The GRPA Executive Director said the health institution, which has been in existence since 1973, will

be offering free services to persons between the ages of 14 and 24. She said GRPA has been able to source additional funding, and this will be used to execute this exercise, which will conclude on December 24.

It was pointed out that one of the initiatives which have garnered major success is the Youth Advocacy Movement – the youth arm of the organization.

This programme has created another avenue for youth empowerment through education, and simultaneously through the provision of resources and services. “ We a l s o m a n a g e a teen-and-youth clinic which provides a youth-friendly environment and is designed around the needs of this group, with supportive and enabling staff to address their needs,” she disclosed.

Environmental Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), opened the event wearing a tibisiri straw-and-leather gown, a creation by popular fashion designer C a r o l F r a s e r. A t t h e brief opening ceremony, remarks were made by Ms. Sharifah Razack, Director of Education at the EPA; Mr. Minuro Ito, JICA representative; Mr. Kashir Ahamad Khan, Honorary Consul General, Japanese Consulate; and Mr. Emoule McDonald of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, under the Ministry of the Presidency.

Throughout the event, the audience was treated to the sweet sound of appropriate steelpan music wafting through the air.

Nine secondary schools, stretching from Ann’s Grove on the East Coast of Demerara to Covent Garden on the East Bank of Demerara, gracefully displayed their vibrant and creative pieces. Judging from the cheers and “wows” from the audience, the creations were a display of sheer talent, creativity and enthusiasm. The first piece to appear on stage -from Annandale Secondary -- was a waistcoat made from a type of soft drink bottle labels, complemented by matching slippers.

kept their eyes fixed on the catwalk to decide on the creations that deserved the distinction of being the most creative, most marketable, and the crowd favourite.

Beterverwagting Secondary copped the distinction of being most c re a t i v e w i t h a w e l l structured paper fan dress displaying the colours of our national flag, the “Golden Arrowhead.” The most marketable piece was

from Brickdam Secondary - a simple, weather-proof dress made from plastic and accessorised with a handbag made from woven paper rolls and plastic.

The audience raised their ‘wows’ several decibels as Covent Garden Secondary stepped on the catwalk in a dress and umbrella artfully adorned with over a hundred foil “snack” packets. Other participating schools were

St. Stanislaus College, Bladen Hall Secondary, Christ Church Secondary, and Golden Grove Secondary. All schools re c e i v e d c e r t i f i c a t e s recognis ing their participation in the event.

The Fashion Show reinforced the need to find creative ways to manage our waste, and to stimulate an understanding that many of the environmental issues we face can be managed with simple, innovative actions. The EPA and its

partners hope to continually present events of this nature in an effort to foster lifechanging environmental education.

Tree-planting exercise intended to beautify Merriman Mall, City - says Town Clerk -urges citizens to plant trees to beautify surroundings NATIONAL Tree Planting Day was yesterday observed countrywide, and the Mayor and City Council’s (M&CC’s) green team was seen at the Merriman Mall in Bourda planting trees to beautify the area.

Residents are being asked to get involved in the tree-planting exercise. According to Town Clerk Royston King, the entire stretch of the Merriman Mall is to be made into a recreational park for children and the elderly.

“We have started to upgrade the physical structure of the mall itself.

We are now putting in swings and slides and other play equipment for our children. We are also putting in lights,” the Town Clerk explained.

“As part of National Tree Planting Day, we are planting trees around the mall; and this will be replicated in almost every local community in the city of Georgetown,” the Town Clerk said.

Inviting participation of all citizens and stakeholders, King said that, in another two weeks, the area around the Merriman Mall will be transformed into a beautiful and safe area for all “to enjoy the good life that was promised to them.”

Meanwhile, the Georgetown Green Volunteer Corps, a body initiated by the M&CC, has commenced cleaning of all community recreational grounds within the City. Group members involved in this activity comprise private citizens and members of the business community. Their tasks include removing overgrowth from these grounds.

Information released by the M&CC has detailed that many parks and other recreational facilities in Georgetown have for years been neglected, due to a lack of funds. The Council has outlined that, over the years, some of these recreational facilities were handed over to community groups for management, but many of those groups have become defunct. Consequently, the grounds could not be cleaned and maintained.

The M&CC has therefore underlined the need for restoration of all playgrounds and parks. The Town Clerk had promised that the “Green Volunteer Corps would give citizens the opportunity to be a part of the restoration and transformation process in the city”.

Guyanese appointed DPP in St. Kitts and Nevis

ST. KITTS and Nevis (WINN): Former Crown Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers Arudranauth Gossai, has been appointed Acting Director of Public Prosecutions for St. Kitts and Nevis.

At age 36, Mr. Gossai is believed to be the country's youngest DPP. WINN FM understands that he has been appointed to act in the post for three months. He made his first appearance at Court in his new position on Thursday.

A graduate of the Hugh Wooding Law School, the Guyanese born

Gossai worked in St. Kitts and Nevis' Attorney's General's Chambers from 2005 - 2012.

During his stint as Crown Counsel, he also served as a member of the legal team representing the government, on several high profile 'political' cases.

He moved into private practice in 2012 working as an Associate Attorney with Gonsalves Parry.

Mr. Gossai has served as Counsel to the National AIDS Secretariat, and in various capacities with the Saint Christopher and Nevis Bar Association; he is currently a member

of the Association's Disciplinary Committee.

The post of DPP had been vacant since September 21st, following a legal settlement between the former DPP and the Attorney General.

The former Director of Public Prosecutions Travers Sinanan had filed suit against the Attorney General Vincent Byron Jr., challenging the government’s decision not to renew his contract.

A confidentiality provision prevents parties from discussing the details of the agreement.

Guyana seeks U.S. help to protect its borders - and keep the Caribbean as zone of peace

PRESIDENT David Granger has requested U.S. help to secure the Caribbean as a zone of peace. This development comes as Guyana presses on to have the Guyana/ Ve n e z u e l a b o r d e r controversy resolved at the International Court of Justice.

In his message on Friday to newly-appointed US Ambassador to Guyana, Mr Perry Holloway, shortly after he had received his credentials at the Ministry of the Presidency, President Granger said: “We desire security that is essential to promoting and consolidating democracy, creating a cohesive society and ensuring the good life for all. We desire respect for our sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

It was explained that Guyana’s geographical

Nevertheless, the President said, Guyana stands resolved to defend its territory, dismantle transnational criminal networks, and develop its natural resources for the benefit of its people.

“The capabilities of criminal cartels, however, can exceed those of small states. We must seek succour and support through partnerships with other states which have an interest in preserving the Caribbean as a zone of peace,” he declared.

Reflecting on the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 2009, President Granger recalled that President Barack Obama had pledged to deepen security cooperation with small Caribbean states; and the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, he said, is the enduring fulfilment of that commitment.

During a meeting with leaders of the small Caribbean states in

Bridgetown, Barbados, in May 1997, President Bill Clinton had signed the Bridgetown Declaration of Principles, thereby setting the foundation for an enduring commitment to defend small Caribbean states. This was followed by a similar engagement with President George Bush and Caribbean leaders in New York, USA back in September 2003.

As such, President Granger said, Guyana is encouraged by the high-level engagements between small Caribbean states and the U.S., and he reaffirmed this country’s commitment to working with the U.S. in an effort to strengthen cooperation under the framework of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, in order to ensure peace, stability and security.

“We are encouraged by the continued interest that the USA has shown in the security of small Caribbean states. The USA’s geopolitical role will be fundamental to addressing the many challenges faced by the Caribbean Region. We wish to urge the USA to use its influence in the Please see page 19

He declared that Guyana looks forward to US support in its legitimate quest to protect itself against terrorism, transnational crime, and threats to its territorial integrity.

Guyana and the US have, for more than 50 years, enjoyed cordial relations in a productive partnership which has seen the promotion of democracy, human rights, energy, health, security, trade, economic freedom, social cohesion, and other areas of mutual interest.

President Granger’s renewed call to the US comes just days after he had urged the United Nations to curb Venezuela’s “expansionist ambitions.”

“Venezuela’s expansionist ambitions cannot be allowed to unsettle the principle of inviolability of borders, undermine the tenets of international law, and unravel borders which have been undisturbed for decades,” President Granger told that august forum as he delivered his maiden address to the UN General Assembly.

His address made it clear that Guyana does not wish to have this obnoxious territorial claim obstruct its possibility for growth for the next 50 years.

Overcoming challenges of old age CONSUMER CONCERNS:

By Pat Dial THE Guyana Consumers Association has always had an abiding interest in two groups of consumers, who had often been marginalised and whose peculiar problems the rest of society seems to ignore. The first group includes women, whom our late President Emeritus Eileen Cox championed throughout her long life. The other group is the aged.

International Day of Elderly Persons was commemorated on October 1 . T h e U n i t e d N a t i o n s Secretary-General gave his traditional message, calling on all countries to take measures to ensure that elderly persons are able to fully participate in society, and have their voices heard.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) projects that, by 2050, 80% of the world's older people would be living in the developing countries. In Guyana and in most other developing countries at the present time, populations tend to be about 60% under 15 years of age, and about 30% are 60 years and over.

In the developed countries, the trend has been that their populations are becoming older, with those under 15 years of age becoming a reducing percentage of the population. It now appears that the population trends in developing countries are gradually beginning to resemble those of the developed countries, with increasing percentages of older persons.

Older people have been contributing their

wisdom to society in all civilisations and in all eras, no matter what their station in life may be. For example, the story-tellers of Africa, or the shamans of Asia, and most of the philosophers and scientists and religious teachers who have made contributions to the betterment of humanity have been older persons. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, however, declared:" Older persons are calling for a world where all have food, shelter, clean water and sanitation, and access to health services and education."

Ban Ki-moon is referring to the vast majority of older persons in the world, and indeed in our own Guyanese society. A person who may have reached middle-class levels of income by the time he retires or is unable to work, would find his economic condition fast beginning to deteriorate

through the depletion of his resources by inflation, the payment of unexpected heavy medical bills, and so on. Very

Pat Dial often, in Guyana, a person who may have once enjoyed a middle-class economic status would find that, in his old age, he has been reduced to much the same level as an ordinary labourer's economic condition in that labourer's old age. Ban Ki-moon's statement does have a greater universal applicability than would appear on the surface.

This implies that the state has to play a part in alleviating the hardships

enveloping old people. Such state intervention is usually done by legislation, the tasking of social services bodies with specific activities relating to the alleviation of the conditions of old people, and by distribution of state resources to old people. Examples of such distribution would be the granting of universal and adequate old-age pensions and subventions to assist in payment for services such as electricity, water and telephone.

But old people must also do their part to help themselves, and they should be reminded, or taught, how to do so. The national newspapers often carry articles advising old people about healthy eating and about dealing with the diseases of old age, such as diabetes and heart ailments.

Such advice is never seen by the poor and semi-literate, and should be communicated verbally and visually by social workers to the lower social levels.

In this regard also, one could gain very useful guidance from the Vedic analysis of over 5,000 years

ago. That analysis has stood the test of time, and is still relevant and useful today.

In the Vedic analysis, an individual's life is divided into four phases: the first phase encompasses the period of studentship and learning; the second phase is when the young person enters the householder's life, is married, raises a family, earns his living, and creates material wealth; the third phase is when the householder begins to increase his knowledge of and commitment to God, and does public service; and the final stage is when one devotes one's self wholly to God, and hopefully begins to enjoy some tranquility and peace; and when one also prepares for the coming of death.

These stages of life are of course not water-tight compartments, but dovetail into each other. Most old people are in either the third or fourth stage, and if they can practise the guidance given, they would be able to live creative and positive lives in their old age, in dignity and with respect from all.

Cameron hails Camacho as true stalwart and champion of the game ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) – West Indies Cricket Board president Dave Cameron has hailed the late former chief executive, Steve Camacho, as a “true stalwart and champion of the game” and has credited him with the development of young players in the past.

Camacho died here early yesterday following a battle with cancer. He was 69.

“I want to first extend my condolences to wife Allison, family and friends of Mr Steve Camacho. We the me0mbers of the cricket family of the West Indies have lost a great man, someone who would always stand up and give his best for West Indies cricket. He was a true stalwart and champion of the game in the Caribbean,” Cameron said.

“As a player, he represented Guyana and West Indies with pride and played his part in helping to grow the game.

He was a mentor for several younger players in club cricket and played a major role in nurturing their development.”

Camacho played 11 Tests for West Indies as an opening batsman and 76 first class games, representing Guyana in the Shell Shield regional competition.

Following his playing ca-

reer, Camacho distinguished himself as an administrator, serving 18 years as the WICB’s chief executive – the board’s first-ever full-time employee.

Camacho also served as board secretary, selector, and West Indies team manager.

Cameron said Camacho had executed every role with efficiency while displaying care and concern for those he worked with.

“He excelled off the field as well. He was an exemplar as manager of the West Indies team and maintained the highest standards as a true ambassador. He also filled the important posts of Secretary of the Board and later our first Chief Executive Officer.

He could be called upon at anytime to assist in the game and did so with distinction,” Cameron noted.

Chelsea crash again as Aguero hits five for Man City

By Mike Collett LONDON, England (Reuters) - Champions Chelsea crashed to their fourth defeat in eight Premier League matches this season when they were beaten 3-1 by Southampton at Stamford Bridge yesterday after a woeful performance that left them 16th in the table.

Manchester City, tipped at the start of the season to be Chelsea’s main title challengers, had earlier gone two points clear at the top after Sergio Aguero scored five goals in a crushing 6-1 defeat of Newcastle United.

While City have 18 points, Chelsea have just eight and are only four points better off than Aston Villa who are in the relegation zone.

The win lifted Southampton up to ninth after their first win at Chelsea since 2002.

Venus Williams wins Wuhan Open title (REUTERS) - Venus Williams captured her 47th WTA career title yesterday, and her biggest in five years, when she won the Wuhan Open in China, beating Wimbledon runner-up Garbine Muguruza.

The 35-year-old American was leading Muguruza 6-3, 3-0 when the Spaniard, struggling with injury, retired, handing the title to Williams, who was already well on top and had won the last five games in a row.

Government extends condolences on the passing of former Test cricketer Stephen Camacho

THE Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (CRG) is saddened by the passing of Stephen Camacho, former Guyana and West Indies opening batsman, West Indies team manager and selector of the-then West Indies Cricket Board of Control (WICBC) Chief Executive Officer, Board secretary and administrator.

The Government extends deepest condolences to his wife Allison and family and his many relatives and friends in Guyana, across the Caribbean and around the world.

Camacho distinguished himself as one of the finest and most widely respected cricket administrators in the region, having been the first full-time employee of the WICBC (subsequently changed to WICB).

Nine days shy of his 70th birthday at the time of his passing, Camacho served as CEO for 18 years and also as Board Secretary.

With a quiet demeanour and exuding elegance Camacho was widely admired, respected and loved in the cricket fraternity and further afield.

The Government of Guyana hopes that Camacho’s legacy of grace, humility and unyielding respect for the regional sport will serve as guideposts to those who have been entrusted with the management of the game.

During his career Camacho played 11 Test matches for the West Indies and represented the-then British Guiana and subsequently Guyana after Independence.

Camacho scored seven first-class centuries and 24 half-centuries, debuting for the West Indies against England in 1968. His highest Test score was 87, scored against England in Trinidad during his debut series.

After his retirement from playing, Camacho initially lived in Barbados while he served as a WICBC administrator and subsequently in Antigua where he had settled and where he passed away yesterday morning after a brief period of declining health.

Team wreckers promise surprise package

DRAG-racing action returns to the South Dakota Circuit today with Quick Shift 2 and with it comes a surprise package, according to team wrecker manager and Ramchand’s Auto Spares owner Anand Ramchand.

Platini called French sports ministry to insist he is clean

PARIS, France (Reuters) - UEFA president Michel Platini, freshly embroiled in the FIFA scandal over a 1.8-million euro payment he received from president Sepp Blatter, called the French sports ministry to insist he had done nothing wrong.

“He has the feeling he is clean and he wanted to say it to me again,” Secretary of State Thierry Braillard told French sports daily L’Equipe yesterday.

“He explained everything. I fully trust his honesty and his determination to become FIFA president,” he added.

Blatter is under criminal investigation by Swiss authorities but remains in office ahead of a scheduled February election.

Platini is being questioned about a payment of two million Swiss francs he received from Blatter but has not been accused of any wrongdoing, although he admitted the development had damaged his chances of replacing Blatter as FIFA president.

French Sports Minister Patrick Kanner also gave his support to Platini yesterday.

“We have not changed our minds on the support we give him. If there was any problem, I do not doubt for a minute that he would have refused to run for FIFA president,” he told L’Equipe.

Former Australian cricketer Lindsay Kline dies, aged 81 … Man who faced last ball of first tied Test in 1960

MELBOURNE, Australia (Reuters) - Former Australian Test cricketer Lindsay Kline has died at the age of 81.

Kline is best known as the man who faced the last ball of the first tied Test, between Australia and the West Indies in 1960.

A left-arm wrist-spinner, Kline played 13 Test matches between 1957 and 1961, capturing 34 wickets at an average of 22.82. He took a hat-trick in just his second Test, against South Africa in Cape Town in January, 1958.

“Throughout his cricket career, he was involved in some extraordinary moments that have become part of the rich history of our great game,” Cricket Australia chief Executive James Sutherland said in a statement.

Australia needed just

one run to win the opening Test against the West Indies in 1960 when Kline flicked a ball to square leg.

His batting partner Ian Meckiff set off from the non-striker’s end in a

desperate dash for the single but was run-out when West Indian fieldsman Joe Solomon hit the stumps with a direct throw, ensuring Test cricket’s first tied Test.

You’re not special any more, Mourinho is told

LONDON, England (Reuters) - If, as former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson once said, a week is a long time in politics, four and a half months in football clearly represents an eternity.

It was only in mid-May that Jose Mourinho’s status as the self-styled ‘Special One’ was rubber-stamped when his Chelsea side finished eight points ahead of their nearest rivals as they romped to the Premier League title.

However, Mourinho had to sit in suffering silence yesterday as Southampton fans taunted him with cries of ‘you’re not special any more’ and ‘getting sacked in the morning’ after their side pulled off a surprise 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Bemused football followers up and down the country are now asking the question, ‘what on earth is happening

at Chelsea?’.

It is early October and already the Londoners have lost six matches in all competitions this season and Mourinho acknowledges his players are going through a crisis of confidence.

“My team, in this moment, the first negative thing that happens, the team collapses, the team mentally and psychologically is unbelievably down,” the former Champions League winner with Porto and Inter Milan told reporters.

“The team try but they collapse. They are in such a low moment, that they collapse.”

Fragile is a word that would certainly seem to sum up the current state of mind of the Chelsea squad.

Mourinho’s men gave as good a first-half performance yesterday as they have produced all season but one goal, Southampton’s equaliser by Steven Davis just before half-

time, knocked the stuffings out of the home side.

The visitors, with the twinkle-toed Sadio Mane running the Chelsea defence ragged, sensed an upset was on the cards and

left Stamford Bridge in their droves long before the final whistle.

So, what IS going wrong at Chelsea?

They were indebted to consistently sparkling displays by England’s Playerof-the-Season Eden Hazard, to a string of lion-heart-

Chelsea started last season in spectacular form but when performances dipped at the turn of the year, it was Mourinho who plotted a series of narrow victories that got them over the line.

Hazard, this term, is a shadow of the player he was a few months ago, the ageing Terry is no longer a regular, midfield strongman Nemanja Matic seems to have lost the faith of his manager.

Matic came on as a halftime substitute against Southampton but lasted only 29 minutes before he was embarrassingly hauled off by Mourinho.

Fellow Serb Branislav Ivanovic cannot put a foot right at full back while playmaker Cesc Fabregas appears to be bereft of ideas in midfield.

Chelsea are leaking goals at an alarming rate at one end of the pitch and, at

the other, they look toothless.

Diego Costa, when he is not engaging in running battles with opposition defenders, is short of goals while back-up strikers Radamel Falcao and Loic Remy are also not firing.

Mourinho was, nonetheless, in defiant mood after yesterday’s defeat left struggling Chelsea in 15th position, hovering four points above the relegation zone.

“No way I will resign.

No way,” he said. “Why? Because Chelsea cannot have a better manager than me.

“There are managers in the world that belong to my level but not better. So no chance I run away.

“First, because I have my professional pride and I know I am very good at my job.

“Secondly, because I love this club very much. I want the best for my club and the best for my club is for me to stay.”

the three years and have a fourth consecutive championship in sight. So dominant has been Our Own’s performance that their unbeaten streak of 55 consecutive victories was only halted a few weeks ago.

Of much significance, that string of wins came to an abrupt end, courtesy of Guyana Sports Club, who are also out to prove that their victory then was no fluke. The two teams have been vying for the title since 2012 and each time Our Own have proved to be the superior side.

In a low-scoring and enthralling affair last year, Our Own achieved victory by four wickets with Most Valuable Player (MVP) Troy Gobin anchoring them to victory in 18.3 overs, chasing 90 for victory in their allotted 20 overs after they had limited GSC to 89 all out in their 20.

Our Own Sports Club boasts quite a formidable lineup. In skipper Mahendranauth ‘Bobby’ Parasnauth, they possess one of the finest all-rounders in the game and among the other big names are the ever-reliable Gobin, former Guyana players Sunil Dhaniram and Shiv Seeram, former Canadian national Desmond Chumney, Jaimini Singh and Orin O’Neil.

Dhaniram represented GSC last season but has opted to “jump ship” this time around, strengthening an already strong combination.

GSC are however confident they can turn the tables and end the continued championship-winning habits of Our Own. Two players, who became eligible to join the ranks of the Masters this season, are expected to play big roles in their quest for victory. They are former Guyana Under-19 batsman Rovendra Madholall and Ian ‘Russian’ Baldeo.

Hard-hitting left-handed opener Richard Driffield has also been in fine form recently and, along with the likes of skipper Fazal Shakoor, Jai Singh, Avinash Singh and Gavin Singh, GSC have the players capable of turning the tables on their opponents.

The Second Division final,

which will be played simultaneously at the adjoining St Bede’s ground, features Reliance Lions and Heritage and this match also promises to be a hotly-contested affair.

Meanwhile, Our Own Sports Club will be holding a food drive as part of the continuing and collaborative efforts with the New York Enforcers in the Toronto Cup here last Labour Day weekend. The club is therefore urging spectators to bring whatever they can afford to the ground today.

The contributions will be added to those already collected to be shipped to Guyana around the middle of October for distribution to several orphanages there.

Fernandes beats Alves as Lucozade squash continues THE ANSA McAl/Lucozade Handicap squash tournament continued on Friday evening and yesterday morning with another round of exciting matches played at the Georgetown Club.

In the latest round of matches Michael Atherly defeated president of the GSA, David Fernandes, 2-1 in a match which went down to the wire. Atherly recovered from being 9/15, to take the second game 15/10, before narrowly hanging on to victory in the final game 22/20.

In Category A on Friday Dominic Collins beat Abosaide Cadogan 2-0 (15/7, 15/12), Demetrius DeAbreu beat Georgina Fernandes 2-0 (15/11, 15/1) and Maya Collins beat James Mekdeci 2-0 (15/9, 15/10). THE STAG Elite League will continue tonight at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) with another intriguing double-header.

In the opening game, Buxton United, the league’s lone team yet to secure a win, will tackle Monedderlust from 18:00hrs, while Alpha United and Fruta Conquerors will clash in the battle of the ‘undefeated’.

While Alpha United picked up a win in their previous game (2-0 against GFC), Fruta Conquerors had to settle for a 2-2 draw with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

Fruta Conquerors currently second in the standing behind Pele FC, will be hard-pressed to keep Alpha United at bay,

GFC upset GDF for first STAG Elite win IT WAS regarded as the biggest upset thus far in the STAG Elite League as the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) defeated the Guyana Defence Force 2-1 on Friday night when the two sides met at Base Camp Ayanganna.

With Chief of Staff Brigadier Mark Phillips watching from the side line, the ‘Army’ took an early lead when Delroy Fraser scored in the 5th minute, much to the delight of their supporters.

Unable to pick up a win in their previous three games, GFC, the perceived whipping boys of the league, rebounded and found the equaliser in the 24th minute through Linden Pickett.

Though the half clearly belonged to the GDF who were more forceful and tactical, GFC went into the dressing room a happy bunch after being able to level the score 1-1.

Upon the resumption of the game, a bemused crowd were further taken aback when the country’s oldest club took the lead two minutes into the second stanza, thanks to a brilliant strike from Kurd Johnson.

By then the crowd had diminished, since most persons left at halftime and after the conclusion of the first game

(Slingerz and Pele), but the few who had remained were predominantly soldiers cheering on their colleagues.

Coach Denzil Thompson’s men did not seem too bothered by falling a goal down (2-1) against the weaker GFC team.

Recognising the army’s plot to press their men forward, GFC smartly ‘parked the bus’; placing almost all of their players deep into their half.

It was a smart move by GFC’s coaching staff, since it proved very difficult for the GDF to penetrate their airtight defence.

As time elapsed, the army, being cheered on by their peers, continued their attempt to force their way through the defence set up by GFC, who held on to pick up a much deserving win.

Up next for GFC is a trip

Stella Maris Primary make successful start to title defence DEFENDING champions Stella Maris defeated St Gabriel’s Primary 1-0 yesterday to open their title defence on a winning note when the COURTS Pee Wee Football tournament kicked off at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground.

Simeon Alleyne scored for the ‘champs’ in the 27th minute in a heated affair that looked as though they mean business and to stake another claim to the coveted title.

Meanwhile, in the opening game 2013 champions St Pius Primary won by default after their opponents St Sidwell’s were a ‘no show’.

Omallie Vieira’s lone strike in the 14th minute was enough to help Smith Memorial sink Marian Academy.

Enterprise Primary mauled Winfer Gardens Primary 7-0 in a lopsided affair, as Martin King scored a hat-trick (4th, 23rd, 28th) and Seon Archibald (15th, 18th) and Garfield Caesar (9th, 38) accounted for the other goals.

St Ambrose Primary won by default after Comenius Primary failed to make an appearance for their match, and F.E Pollard Primary and St Agnes Primary played to a goalless draw.

School of the Nations and Sophia Primary played to an entertaining 1-1 draw as Geraina Stewart scored in the 15th minute for Sophia with ‘Nations’ getting the equaliser through Kamir Khan in the 31st minute.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CMC) – Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo says he is looking forward to his first taste of Test cricket on Sri Lankan soil, after undergoing his first practice session here yesterday.

The 29-year-old Guyanese toured here last year with West Indies A but says the thrill of playing the longest format had left him highly motivated for the two-Test series.

“It’s my first time in Sri Lanka playing Test cricket.

I’ve heard a lot about Sri Lanka and the pitch taking spin so I really want to play here … they are one of the best teams in the world at playing spin,” Bishoo said.

“At the end of the day, you have to play your cricket and try to enjoy it as much as possible and be up to the standard. I just want to do well, as with every other series and every match that I play, I just want to do well and enjoy it as much as possible.

“My confidence is there, there’s nothing to worry about too much. I just have to go and put the ball in the

DCC dismantle GNIC to reach Carib Beer T20 final … Malteenoes face GCC today

DEMERARA Cricket Club (DCC) steamrolled GNIC by 95 runs to book the first spot in the final of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Carib Beer T20 tournament, at the DCC ground yesterday.

DCC will now face the victors of today’s semi-final between Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC). That semifinal has a scheduled bowl-off time of 13:00hrs.

In the first semi, DCC took the opportunity to bat first and posted a mammoth total of 214-9 in their allotted overs.

Kevon Boodie led the charge with

a commanding knock of 81 from 46 balls, which was laced with nine fours and four maximums. Boodie, along with his captain Christopher Barnwell (39) and National U-19 all-rounder Shurfane Rutherford (22), took the hammer to an ordinary GNIC line-up.

Trevon Griffith (12) and Brian Sattaur (10) did not stick around long at the top of the order while Kemol Savory pitched in with a welcome 14 down the order.

Jermaine Grovesnor finished with 3-37 for GNIC as Rawle Merrell supported with 2-39 while Rayon Griffith and Collis Butts took one each.

Leg-spinner Bishoo eager to exploit Sri Lankan pitches

GNIC replied with 119-9 from 16.1 overs as U-15 National captain Ashmead Nedd and Rutherford stormed through the opposition’s batting.

Nedd’s right-arm off-spin bagged 4-11 from 3.1 overs while Rutherford’s right-arm medium claimed 4-33 from four overs. Dennis Squires pitched in with 1-25 from 4.

Only Assad Fudadin (39) and Shawn De Souza (37) put up some resistance while the remainder of the team crumbled around them.

Extras played a major part in GNIC’s innings with over a score given away by the eventual victors.

Bishoo has enjoyed success ever since returning to Test cricket earlier this year, following a three-year spell outside the selectors’ frame.

The right-armer played the second Test of the threematch series against England back in April taking five wickets in the match, and followed up with a brilliant sixwicket first-innings haul in the first Test against Australia at Windsor Park in Dominica.

“One of the things (I have been focusing on) is staying tough and enjoying my cricket as much as possible and just keep working hard at my cricket,” the Guyanese explained.

After just three days here, West Indies have already come face to face with the challenge of the Sri Lankan heat, with temperatures already soaring past 32 degrees Celsius.

And Bishoo said it was vital the team stick together as a group in order to survive the rigours of the tour.

“If the place is hot, you can’t do anything about it.

At the end of the day, you still have to play cricket in it and you have to be mentally tough and mentally strong,” he said.

“We have to enjoy the tour as much as possible, stick together as a unit and do well. Sticking together will help the team a lot, that’s very, very important … just supporting each other. As I’ve said over and over, we have to enjoy the cricket as a team.”

West Indies face Sri Lanka President’s XI in a three-day tour match starting on Thursday.

COURTS Pee Wee football tourney

Colourful display of teams marks the opening THE 4th COURTS Pee Wee football tournament kicked off yesterday with the country’s largest furnishing and appliance store committing to the longevity of the competition that caters to hundreds of primary school children in the city.

At the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground, Marketing Manager Pernell Cummings said the COURTS Pee Wee football tournament is one of the company’s most exciting events and one that they (COURTS) look forward to the most since it is where the next generation of the country’s football players are born.

The event, organised by Petra Organisation, will see 23 other schools try to dethrone defending champions Stella Maris Primary and, according to Cummings, the excitement that the COURTS Pee Wee tournament brings is unlike any other.

Cummings lauded the organisers for what he called the best opening ceremony since the tour-

nament’s inception and thanked the schools for making an effort to be organised.

Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Claude Bolton upon congratulating the organisers and the sponsors for ensuring that the future of Guyana’s football is bright, encouraged the students to stay in school and to become proper student athletes.

Bolton stressed that staying in school will open more doors for students to not only pursue a career in football but also to become more academically inclined.

Director of Sport Christopher Jones said that he was impressed with how much effort was put into ensuring all the schools are uniformed and knowing that most it was done with very little resources.

Jones, after declaring the tournament officially open, asked for more female participation and pledged his support to the tournament.
