Guyana-China Business Council raises over $5M for city clean-up – CHEC donates $1M THE Guyana-China Business Council has raised $5.5M for the ongoing clean-up work around Georgetown and its environs. Chairman of the Council, Clinton Williams said a number of companies have
come onboard, expressing a willingness to support the efforts. In this regard, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) on Saturday donated $1M towards assisting in the clean-up activities as well.
Williams said several other Chinese companies have made contributions totalling $4.5M. According to President David Granger Administration’s immediate plan for the city, there will be a massive clean-up, which began at

Known characters being questioned over murder of elderly Mahaica woman By Leroy Smith THE Police in ‘C’ Division are still working to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder of Mahaica pensioner and mother of three, Chandroutie Persaud, which occurred between Friday evening and Saturday morning. Police sources yesterday told this newspaper that the two men who were picked up on Saturday for questioning
were still in custody as the police continue their probe. On Saturday morning before sunrise, the woman’s gagged and bound body was found on her bed at her 46 River View Squatting Area home at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. Chandroutie Persaud, 68, lived with her husband at the home, but they slept in separate rooms. The woman operated a greens stall and grocery shop, and was well known in
the area by almost everyone, according to residents. The woman, according to reports, would normally assist persons in the community to secure food items and other necessities whenever they visited her establishment but did not have enough money to make their purchases. One of the woman’s sons on Saturday told Guyana Chronicle that he or other family members were unaware that his mother had enemies but the person who killed her may be from the community and was familiar with her. He recalled that his stepfather was not an able-bodied person and so even if he had
heard anything suspicious when the woman was being attacked it would have been difficult for him to assist her due to his health complications. The son added that several years ago his mother was attacked by one of her daughter’s reputed husband after the young lady and the man broke off a relationship. He recalled that his mother was stabbed several times about the body but managed to survive. Asked if he had suspicions about his former reputed brother-in-law in this recent tragedy, the young man responded in the negative, adding that they had all gotten over that phase in their

life and things were back to normal. Meanwhile, when this publication visited on the day in question, persons in the community expressed shock
at the murder of the woman and noted that instances of elderly persons being murdered in their homes seem to be the new norm and the issue must be addressed by the Government. Over the past three years there have been numerous cases of elderly women being battered during home invasions. While some of the incidents proved that robbery was the motive, others appeared to be just acts of aggression against senior citizens. Meanwhile, police have been able to prosecute a few persons in connection with these types of homicide. A young man from Kingston is now on remand for the murder of a Plaisance senior citizen who he reportedly gagged, rape and murdered. The woman was familiar with the young man who was charged with her murder as she on several occasions had employed him to do work around her house.

President says time Rodney COI wraps up hearings – more money, further extensions out of the question By Gary Eleazar THE Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the 35-year-old 1980 bomb explosion that killed world renowned historian and leading figure of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Dr Walter Rodney, will have to wrap up its hearings and come to a conclusion shortly, as Head of State Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, has indicated a desire to have no more extensions. President Granger made the disclosure on Friday last following the swearing-in of another batch of Government ministers, and made it clear to members of the media that he was not in any way scrapping the COI. The President expressed the view that enough time and money has been wasted behind the COI. “The Rodney Commission has not performed adequately,” President Granger said, adding: “A lot of time and money have been wasted, and I would like to bring it to a conclusion as early as possible.” During his engagement with media operatives while

at the Ministry of the Presidency, His Excellency said, “It (Rodney COI) has already received several extensions, and money is being wasted.” NOT SCRAPPING COI He maintained that he was in no way looking to scrap the COI but rather, “I would like to bring it to a conclusion as early as possible; it must finish its work.”
The President added, “I don’t envisage more extensions.” He reminded that the COI into Dr. Rodney’s ‘assassination’ commenced ever since February last year. This COI was set up by former President Donald Ramotar who had conceded that while it would have been an expensive venture, it would have been money
‘The Rodney Commission has not performed adequately... a lot of time and money have been wasted, and I would like to bring it to a conclusion as early as possible’ – President Granger well spent. The former President had said that the request for the COI came from the wife of the slain WPA activist. The Guyana Government hired three Caribbe-
an jurists to serve on the three-member commission, namely: Barbadian Queen’s Counsel, Sir Richard Cheltenham, (Chairperson), Queen’s Counsel Jacqueline Samuels-Brown from
Jamaica and Senior Counsel Seenath Jairam from Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Rodney was killed when a bomb exploded in his lap instantly killing him. He had just retrieved an improvised ‘walkie talkie’ reportedly from Guyana Defence Force Sergeant (GDF) Gregory Smith, which in fact turned out to be a bomb. Over the years a number of theories have been proffered in relation to the late historian’s tragic death, including the claim that he was killed on the direct orders of the State and that he had also been a victim of his own misadventure. Dr Rodney was killed instantly when a bomb exploded in his lap while he was seated in the passenger seat of his brother’s Mazda Capella motor car, PBB 2349, in John Street, near Hadfield Street in the vicinity of the Georgetown Prisons on the night of June 13, 1980. Rodney was widely known in Third World countries, and he was best known for authoring the book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa.”

‘Where are the youths?’ IN A campaign that focused heavily on youth, the new A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Administration is yet to deliver on its promises of youth involvement. “Where are the youths?” questioned leader of the former People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Administration, Mr Donald Ramotar. The one-liner was emphatic, although it was
voiced as an aside during a press conference held at Freedom House last Friday. Notably, APNU+AFC hosted a youth rally as part of the 2015 elections campaign, where the coalition, via its youth leaders Malika Ramsey, Reynard Ward and Jevaughn Stephens, had made a number of sweeping promises to those present with the hope of winning their support at the May 11 Elections. Ramsey, who addressed
the rally held at the corners of Main Street and Cooper’s Lane, New Amsterdam told the crowd that youths will play an important role at all levels of the Government, and within the decision-making forums of the country, should the APNU+AFC come to power. “We need a Government to provide an enabling environment where young people do not only sit in call centres,” APNU’s James Bond,
an attorney-at-law, had said. However, to date there has been no appointment of any young professional to any senior Government administrative post, although only one APNU member, Christopher Jones, is reportedly being considered for the post of Director of Youth within the Ministry of Communities, headed by the subject minister, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine.
DEFENCE Meanwhile, the new Head of State, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger in a comment publicised by a local media entity Friday, had defended the decisions he made relative to the issue. According to him, his Administration reflects an important balance of “experience” which he said is needed. The Head of State said, “You would have noticed
there’s a significant number of junior ministers, who will be under-studying them; so what you see now will not be what will exist in a few years from now. “We regard this Cabinet as a field not only to ensure that the Government’s work is done better, but to also provide an apprenticeship for younger and other ministers; that is why almost every ministry has a junior minister.”

John Nash, mathematician who inspired ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ killed in car crash (REUTERS)-Mathematician John Nash, a Nobel Prize winner whose longtime struggle with mental illness inspired the movie “A Beautiful Mind”, was killed in a car crash along with his wife in New Jersey, state police said yesterday. The couple were in a taxi when the driver lost control, crashed into a guard rail and hit another car on Saturday afternoon on the New Jersey Turnpike, said police. Nash, 86, and his wife, Alicia, 82, were thrown from the taxi and pronounced dead at the scene, New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Williams added, declining to comment on media reports that they were not wearing seat belts. Russell Crowe, who portrayed Nash in the Oscar-winning movie, said on Twitter that he was stunned by the deaths. “An amaz-
ing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts,” the Hollywood star wrote. The taxi driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the other vehicle was also treated in hospital, police said. No charges had been filed, Williams added. Nash was awarded the Nobel Prize for economics in 1994 for his work on game theory and the mathematics of decision-making. The film “A Beautiful Mind” was loosely based on his battle with schizophrenia. Nash received his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1950 and spent much of his career there and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He began experiencing what he described as “mental disturbances” in 1959 after marrying Alicia, a MIT physics major who was then pregnant, according to his biography on the Nobel

He stressed that his was an unusual case, as he was able to eventually stop taking medication and return to normal activities and his research. Nash and his wife were living in Princeton Junction, New Jersey, New Jersey police said.
Irish voters back gay marriage in ‘social revolution’ By Padraic Halpin and Conor Humphries DUBLIN , (Reuters)-The people of Ireland backed same-sex marriage by a landslide in a referendum that marked a dramatic social shift in a traditionally Catholic country that only decriminalised homosexuality two decades ago. After one of the largest turnouts in a referendum there, 62 percent of voters said ‘Yes’, making Ireland the first country to adopt same-sex marriage via a popular vote. ‘Yes’ supporters crowded into the courtyard of Dublin Castle to watch in blistering sunshine as results trickled in from around the country were shown on a large screen. They cheered with joy as the final tally was announced and then burst into a rendition of the national anthem. “We woke up today to

a new Ireland. The real Irish Republic that I have dreamed of my whole life,” said Jean Webster, a 54-year-old administrator who came out as a lesbian eight years ago after separating from her husband. Government ministers waved a rainbow flag from the stage in front of the crowd and one lesbian senator proposed to her partner live on national television. “The answer is yes to their future, yes to their love, yes to equal marriage. That ‘Yes’ is heard loudly across the world as a sound of pioneering leadership from our people,” Prime Minister Enda Kenny told a news conference. “Ireland, thank you.” The Catholic Church, which teaches that homosexual activity is a sin, saw its dominance of Irish politics collapse after a series of child sex abuse scandals in the early 1990s and limited its ‘No’ campaigning to sermons to its remaining flock.

Voters elect new government in Suriname today PARAMARIBO, Suriname, (CMC )– Voters in this Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country go to the polls today to elect a new government with President Desi Bouterse confident of victory despite opposition claims that his administration had mismanaged the country over the past five years. “No one sees what you vote in the booth, vote for your child and children’s children. This government you must vote down. In this box you are alone, you need not be afraid, “Paul Somohardjo, leader of the Pertjajah Luhur party urged supporters as it ended its

campaign here on Saturday night. Another opposition leader, DA91 president Winston Jessurun told supporters “a future built on the wreckage of this government lasts a lifetime,” while Arthur Tjin-
A - Ts o i ( N P S ) , w h i c h formed part of the opposition grouping, V7 Grun Dyan, appealed to the “floating” voters to ensure that the government is defeated at the polls on Monday. “Suriname stands at a crossroad where it has to change its course, he said, adding, the floating voter has a special responsibility, the responsibility to vote, to bring about change. “They have had a mismanagement…and the country is bankrupt.” Ronnie Brunswick, whose Alternative Combination (AC) was the other member of the coalition government led by
Bouterse, said the relationship with the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has not always been good. “I’m on a mission, my mission is not finished. Give Bravo the opportunity to give direction in this country,” he told supporters. But a confident Bouterse is already predicting victory and has told supporters that there would be changes to his administration following today’s poll. Bouterse is going into the election seeking to ward off criticisms of his administration by the opposition that include corruption allegations, the incarceration of
his son, in a United States jail on drugs and gun running charges. “ We h a v e r e c e n t l y worked hard and want to finish the job,” said the NDP with Assembly President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons telling supporters “Paramaribo, give me quorum”. Electoral officials said that all is in place for Monday’s poll and that all 623 polling stations will open on time at 7.00 am (local time). “We are well on schedule,” says Reggy Grain Harvest, coordinator of a group charged with setting up polling stations in Paramaribo Northeast. “The commissioner has
five groups of 10 persons to set up all the polling stations. We have already completed Munder, and are engaged in Blauwgrond and Rainville. Sunday we finished all the administrative jurisdiction “Grain Harvest said. Meanwhile, the Development Through Unity (ODE) says it plans to boycott the elections. “The 30,000 members of the ODE party will not go to the polls on Election Day, May 25,” said the ODE chairman, Ferdinand Louis. Louis said he had been unsuccessful in getting his party to be part of the various coalitions contesting the elections.
Opinion poll says T&T general elections too close to call PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) - An opinion poll published here Sunday predicts that the 2015 general elections will be a “nail biter” with the outcome of the election resting on five constituencies. The Sunday Express commissioned poll found that both the ruling coalition People’s Partnership government of Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and the main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM), headed by Dr. Keith Rowley were “each ahead in 18 seats and five seats too close to call”. The poll by Solution by Simulation is published on the fifth anniversary of the coalition victory in the 2010 general election when it won 29 seats. The pollsters questioned 1,035 voters and the margin of error is plus or minus three per cent. According to the poll “the race is proving to be a \’nail biter’ with each party with a clear lead in 18 seats and five seats too close to call. “The Independent Liberal Party (ILP) and other parties have no statistical likelihood to win any seats at the current time,” the

pollsters said. The ILP is headed by Austin Jack Warner, the former national security minister, who represents the traditional Chaguanas west seat, a traditional stronghold of the United National Congress (UNC), the main partner in the four-member coalition administration. The poll found that the coalition party “ has a lead over the PNM in the overall national vote, however, these supporters are disproportionately concentrated in 18 seats, leading to the tied vote on a constituency basis”. The published poll did not say which of the five seats could determine the general election, but noted that the rate among undecided voters “continued to

It said that the job rating of Prime Minister Persad Bissessar has now returned to the 2011 level of 54 per cent “although confidence in her government continues to lag considerably behind”. It gave no approval rating for Rowley, but said that the majority of those polled (47 per cent) disapprove of his suspension from Parliament over the so-called “emailgate” scandal. “It appears the back and forth over the emailgate issue may end up having very little effect on the election race,” the poll found, noting “only 14 per cent of voters say the eventual outcome will affect their vote. “The vast majority (67 per cent) claim the issue

general election after the Parliament is dissolved on June 17. General elections must be held here no later than September 17.

No criminal, but a hero IT HAS long been the contention of this newspaper that the courts have contributed significantly to the crime-wave in Guyana by the injudicious decisions made by bleeding-heart and unconscionable magistrates and judges over the years. This has, in a large way, de-motivated police from fully executing their mandate of providing service and protection to the populace, because many times police lay their lives on the line to apprehend the criminals preying on members of the public, only to see them once again roaming the streets, engaged in their proclivity to thieving and robbing citizens, sometimes with dire consequences when a victim is even killed,
or even severely injured during the commission of a crime. And there are unending calls for citizens to play an active role in crime detection and prevention, but how supportive is the judiciary to this scenario, where citizens, and even police, are forced to use force to deter and catch criminals, armed or unarmed, in the act? The following example is a case in point. Lawrence Wayne was going about his business peacefully when a businesswoman raised an alarm of an invasion of armed robbers in her place of business on the Merriman’s Mall. Wayne, a licensed firearm holder, responded, forcing the thieves to retreat to their vehicle and flee. According to a police report, at approximate-
ly 13:15 hrs on August 23, 2014, two men armed with handguns entered the Beverage Paradise stall at Merriman’s Mall, Bourda, Georgetown. Upon seeing the men, the female owner ran and raised an alarm, and a licensed firearm holder responded. It was further alleged that the two armed men entered a waiting motor vehicle driven by an accomplice, and were tracked by the licensed firearm holder, who subsequently saw the getaway car at Light and Fifth Streets, Alberttown. Police say that the licensed firearm holder confronted a man who had exited the car and entered a shop in the area, during which confrontation the man pulled out a firearm and was shot to his abdomen by the licensed firearm holder. The man, however,
managed to escape on foot, but the unlicensed .32 Beretta pistol with four rounds that he had in his possession was recovered and handed over to the police. The injured bandit was later found at a private hospital where he later succumbed. However, instead of the kudos he deserves, Lawrence Wayne was arrested and remanded on a charge of murder. It is hardly likely that these bandits had not committed similar crimes in the past; it is extremely possible that they harmed their victims during the commission of these crimes, because the guns were not acquired by them to be used as playthings. One wonders if Wayne should not have interceded; or if, having responded to
the victim’s cries for help, he should have quietly submitted to the bandit’s firing live bullets at him. Wayne was forced to become a fugitive, having been forced to flee from the police, which is always begging for assistance from the public in its crime-fighting efforts. Upon his return home, he was, unbelievably, arrested and charged with murder as soon as he set foot in his homeland. Today, he has been remanded to prison, with his fate and future hanging in the balance; his business, personal and family life have been completely upturned. Dexter Lindo was a career criminal engaged in a robbery; he was armed with a gun. Wayne is a businessman who rescued a victim from this crimi-
nal and his accomplices, going that extra mile in a bid to apprehend them. He was shot at by Lindo, and he returned fire. So, how does that make him a murderer? This man is no criminal, but a hero deserving of a medal. Mr Bumble, a shady character in Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” described the law as “ An ass; an idiot.” Although this exclamation of Dickens’ villainous character emerged from a different context and set of circumstances, what better example is needed to verify Mr. Bumble’s observation of his characterization of the law than the foregoing matter of the State versus Lawrence Wayne?
BK Int’l gives Granger Administration the ‘thumbs up’ --equates new leadership style to that of Dr Jagan By Leroy Smith BUSINESS tycoon Brian Tiwarie, owner and founder of BK International, on Saturday said that the change which has come to Guyana is well deserving and comes at the right time, even as he pledged to work closely with the David Granger administration. Speaking with the Guy-

the change is good for him, his company, and the children of Guyana as they can now truly see a better future as hope has been restored to Guyana. “It gives us some encouragement, because I see a better future for the children where they can come out publicly and do things for their country,” Tiwarie told this newspaper. MONDAY 18 Brigadier (rtd) David Arthur Granger duly elected Executive President BRIGADIER (rtd) David Arthur Granger, has been duly elected and sworn in as the 8th Executive President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.Granger was administered the Oath of Office by Chancellor of the Judiciary, Carl Singh, in the presence of thousands at the Public Buildings. Head of State, Granger has since pledged to work together with the ousted Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) and its leader former President Donald Ramotar, towards building a brighter future and achieve the promise of a “good life for all.” APNU+AFC leader being ‘disingenuous’ OFFERS for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to form a national unity Government were not made as is being claimed, according to its leader Mr. Donald Ramotar. Reports from local media outlets have reported that the new Head of State, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, made the offer. Mr. Granger is reported to have expressed his disappointment that Mr. Ramotar has not
accepted his offer for close working relations. “Guyana has turned the corner. It will be better Government…we are not in the business of winner takes all and locking people out. I would like a Government of all the people and that is why I would like to ask former President Ramotar to reconsider his position,” Granger was quoted by an online site as saying. However, the PPP/C leader noted that this was not so and contends that Mr. Granger is being ‘disingenuous’ in asserting any other position. Harmon... APNU+AFC 100-day plan will be delivered ASSIGNED Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Joseph Harmon, said the APNU+AFC overall 100-day plan has to do with commitment and confidence building. The new APNU+AFC administration, as part of its immediate plans, will seek to reduce the Berbice Bridge toll, significantly increase salary for public servants, implement a phased reduction of VAT, remove VAT from food and other essential items, set the date for the early holding of Local Government Elections, establish the Public Procurement Commission, call a National Cane Workers and Cane Farmers Conference, arrange a National Rice Farmers and Rice

However, things began to get rocky between Tiwarie’s company and the Ministry of Public Works headed by former Minister Robeson Benn. The fallout had to do with the controversial project at Supenaam Stelling, where Tiwariwe’s company was awarded a contract to construct a ramp to facilitate vehicles going on and off the ferry there. The ramp had buckled under pressure and cost the previous government millions of dollars to rectify. According to the government back then, the contractor, BK International, had provided sub-standard work, but BK maintained that the government had deviated from the original design submitted by the company for the construction of the facility. Then there was the issue of stone shortage, where again former Minister Benn accused the company of being unable to supply enough
stone to complete works which were ongoing, as well as other orders by contractors for the completion of government projects. It was against that backdrop that the Ramotar administration moved to import stone, which BK International publicly stated was not up to their standard. The latest battle between the Ramotar government and BK International had to do with the construction of a section of the East Bank Demerara four-lane highway. The government, on its part, accused the company of moving very slowly to complete its section of the road, while the company hosted a media tour of the project and pointed to the presence of infrastructure belonging to utility companies GT&T and GWI which was along the areas it needed to carry out works. BK stated that the government had failed to negotiate properly with the utility companies to have them relocate their infrastructure so that the road works could go ahead. The biggest fallout over that project was the presence of a single utility pole which belonged to GT&T.

Speaking at the official opening of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the CDB in Basseterre, St. Kitts, Dr. Smith said fiscal rules, backed by tough legislation, must become the norm rather than the exception, adding that the building of fiscal buffers should also become an integral component of every national sustainability strategy. PPP/C accuses APNU+AFC of ‘political gimmickry’ PRONOUNCEMENTS by the leader of A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), David Granger, regarding an invitation for the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) to join a “national unity” movement has been dubbed a political gimmick. The party, in a statement, said: “The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) wishes to label as deceptive, the pronouncements made in the press by Leader of the APNU+AFC coalition, David Granger, that he has invited the PPP/C to join “a national unity movement.” It added that to date there has been no formal or informal invitation from the APNU+AFC on the matter. “The pronouncement therefore of Granger, is a political gimmick and nothing else,” the PPP said.

The well was drilled by ExxonMobil affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited, and encountered more than 295 feet (90 metres) of high-quality oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs. It was safely drilled to 17,825 feet (5,433 meters) in 5,719 feet (1,743 meters) of water. The discovery of falsified Statements of Polls (SoPs); the refusal of GECOM to
have public vetting of polling day staffers, many of whom were discovered to be activists of the political Opposition; misdirection by some GECOM staffers who “advised” voters; damaged stamps that saw some ballots not being properly stamped; the fact that persons without identification cards were allowed to vote even though their images did not match those in the files of GECOM staff; and the denial of proxy holders to use their proxies, are among the irregularities the party will be protesting. FRIDAY 22 Venezuela’s objection to Guyana’s oil search will meet stiff US resistance GUYANA must forge ahead with its search for oil in the Stabroek Block, despite recent objections by neighbouring Venezuela claiming that Guyana was in violation of its sovereign territory. Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Rashleigh Jackson is of the firm conviction that the exploration is being conducted in Guyana’s waters and must proceed; and that any military intervention on the part of Venezuela will not be tolerated by the United States of America, as it is a US company that is conducting exploration. President Granger pays visit to ExxonMobil’s Deepwater Champion WITH Guyana set to join the group of oil producing nations, President David Granger paid his first visit to the ExxonMobil oil drilling ship, the Deepwater Champion. The President expressed his gratitude to the ship’s crew for their recent discovery of hydrocarbons. “We are one of the Guianas, and it is a rich part of the world, in terms of rainforest, current, minerals, so I am glad that we have opened the door, I am glad that you are a part of opening the door for us,” the President said. He also mentioned his earlier commitment, prior to assuming office, of the creation of a Sovereign Wealth Fund, so that the disposal of any natural resource will go towards benefitting the people of Guyana. WHO member states agree new global malaria strategy for 2016/2030 – aims at 40% decrease by 2020 IN an effort to reduce the burden of global diseases, the World Health Organisation (WHO) member states have agreed to implement a new global malaria strategy for the period 2016/2030. The Organisation’s proposed programme budget for 2016/2017 has also been approved. A statement on the WHO’s online web page reads: “The strategy aims to reduce the global disease
burden by 40% by 2020, and by at least 90% by 2030; while it also aims to eliminate malaria in at least 35 new countries by 2030.” Between 2000 and 2013, the global malaria mortality rate dropped by 47%, thanks to a major expansion of the WHO-recommended core package of measures – vector control, chemoprevention, diagnostic testing and treatment -- which has proven both cost effective and efficient.
Nevertheless, millions of people are still unable to access malaria prevention and treatment, and most deaths continue to go unregistered and unreported. In 2013, malaria killed an estimated 584,000 people. AIMS OF NEW STRATEGY The statement revealed that the new strategy aims to build on recent successes to radically reduce this figure. Developed in close
consultation with endemic countries and partners, the strategy provides a comprehensive framework so countries can develop tailored programmes that would sustain and accelerate progress towards malaria elimination. It comprises three key elements: ensuring universal access to malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment; accelerating efforts towards elimination and attainment of malaria-free status; and strengthening malaria sur-
veillance. The strategy also emphasises the importance of innovation and research, and the critical need for political commitment, sustainable financing, strong health systems, and collaboration across different sectors. PROGRAMME BUDGET 2016/17 The WHO disclosed that the member states also approved its proposed Programme Budget for 2016/17. The budget, worth US$4384.9M, includes a US$236M increase over the
2014/15 programme budget requirement, to meet the needs of countries; leverage the experience gained during the Ebola outbreak; address emerging priorities, such as antimicrobial resistance, health and the environment, malaria and viral hepatitis; and implement resolutions passed by the Assembly and WHO’s Regional Committees. Additional funds would also be used to further strengthen transparency, improve risk management, and enhance accountability. (Navendra Seoraj)
Overwhelmed by life’s challenges, fisherman chooses death By Jeune Bailey-Vankeric
CHRISTALALL Ramlall, 45, remained motionless in his bed at Goed Banana Land, East Canje, in Berbice. The jaws of death had already grabbed him. It was three days since he was last seen by his elder brother Mahendra Persaud, who, like his sibling, lived in poverty in a tenement yard. Ramlall, a fisherman, was experiencing domestic issues with his wife. She could no longer stay in a home where its creaky floors, porous walls and leaking roof failed to be a place of safety or comfort. There were constant arguments in the home, due to the scarcity of necessities besides constant abuse. Ramlall
did not go to sea regularly. When he did, he would return home with some catch, and would remain inland until all the money, some spent on alcohol, were exhausted. Ramlall’s wife became frustrated with the hopeless situation, and decided to leave on May 17, taking with her their teenage daughter. T h e f o l l o w i n g d a y, Christalall Ramlall was seen leaving their home. He returned later that afternoon, and went up the stairs before shutting the door. That was the last time he was seen by his siblings with whom he shared an estranged relationship. No one bothered to check on him until an obnoxious liquid dripped through the flooring of the upper flat.
His brother Mahendra Persaud lived in the disorganized lower flat. He sensed that something may have gone terribly wrong. He, however, plucked the courage to call his brother, as they were not on speaking terms. But his shouts went unanswered. He then maneuvered himself up the shaky stairs and knocked on the door. Still, there was no response. Attempts to open a nearby window were unsuccessful too. Someone suggested that more force should be used at the door, and so, armed with a four-by-four piece of lumber, the door was banged open. Persaud was the first to see him; he was lying on his bed, dressed in the very clothes he was last seen
wearing. He was motionless, bloated, obnoxious, and evidently dead. Police were summoned, and they took his body away to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was certified dead. On Friday, May 22, Dr Vivikanand Brijmohan
reported that Ramlall had ingested a poisonous substance; he had committed suicide. His siblings, including his brother, wept. They are sorry for the small matters that caused them to be alienated, although they were
living in the same yard. “Meh sorry meh buddy tek he own life; meh sorry me couldn’t ah help he; meh nah know dat he wouldah do da,” one of them lamented. Ramlall was buried on Saturday at the Reliance Cemetery in East Canje.
Lion Mountain accident claims five lives INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into the reported deaths of five persons who perished recently in a vehicular accident at Lion Mountain, in the north western Cuyuni-
Mazaruni area of Region Seven. While the identities of the deceased persons have not been disclosed to this publication, reports state that the driver of the truck
in which they were being transported has been admitted to the Suddie Hospital in Essequibo with severe injuries. The driver whose name was given as Gaskin Williams is said to be nurs-
ing multiple injuries about the body, and several fractured ribs. Reports reaching Guyana Chronicle indicated that the miners were employees of businessman Alfro Al-
phonso, and were transporting fuel to their mining location when the accident occurred. According to reports, some seventeen persons were aboard the vehicle
when it toppled, injuring some of the passengers and leaving five dead. Attempts yesterday to contact businessman Mr. Alphonso for a further update proved futile. (Alex Wayne)

Ramotar: Elections machinery was ‘corrupted’ By Vanessa Narine “ENOUGH focus was not placed on the machinery itself and that caused the mistake, in our view, of declaring the elections free and fair,” declared leader of the former People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Administration, Mr Donald Ramotar. A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) scored a close victory in the General and Regional Elections with 207,200 votes, while the PPP/C secured the

declarations were made, but these were rejected. Also not yet granted was the PPP/C’s request for the SoPs, Tally Sheets and a breakdown of results of each Polling Division or ballot boxes. Recounts as well as the release of the SoPs, Tally Sheets and a breakdown of results of each Polling Division or ballot boxes are still being demanded by the PPP/C. Dr Jagdeo said, “It was a plot; that is why they refused our legitimate request for a recount. It’s only when you aggregate, add up the boxby-box result you can come

support of 202,694 Guyanese who cast their votes in its favour. The result of the elections declared by the Guyana Elections Commission (GCEOM) is being challenged by the PPP/C, after several irregularities in the electoral process were flagged by the party. Mr Ramotar said, “What is new in this election is that the machinery itself was corrupted, they have managed to corrupt the machinery itself in this instance.” He explained that the manipulation of the elections machinery was evidenced in: the discovery of falsified Statements of Poll (SoP); the refusal of GECOM to
and the denial of proxy holders the use of their proxies, among others. “The machinery is expected to be the one that is neutral,” Mr Ramotar stressed.
up with a total; and they are refusing now to give us the box- by-box total because there is a fear that when we have our SoPs and look at the box-by-box results they used that there will be a difference; and they will be hard-pressed to explain those differences.” He highlighted the fact that the inconsistences about which the PPP/C raised concerns ought to have triggered an immediate investigation, as would have obtained in any other country. As such, the former President declared that GECOM’s disposition points to a possible cover up. He also concluded that the current Administration
GECOM THE PROBLEM Meanwhile, former president Dr Bharrat Jagdeo made similar observations, and charged that GECOM is the “source” of the problem. “GECOM has been the source of the problem; we believe it was a sinister motive,” he said. On the basis of the discovered irregularities, recounts were requested before and after the official
OBSERVERS DUPED Both leaders contend that the electoral observer missions were duped and made premature pronouncements deeming the 2015 General and Regional Elections “free and fair,” after observing the voting process – when indeed the electoral process involved voting, counting and verification before official results are declared. “Many people would point out that the observers gave the elections a clean bill of health, but they did so even before the verification started on the polls, and therefore they did not have a chance, or they missed the new form of rigging,” Mr Ramotar said, adding: “In the past, observers always looked at the machinery as the neutral partner… We believe that there was not a focus on the machinery itself, and that caused them
[the observers] to make the mistake of declaring that these elections were free and fair. That is why we think they were duped; they were not looking where a huge amount of rigging took place, and that is within the GECOM machinery itself.” NEXT MOVE The PPP/Cs concerns are expected to be internationalised, with representation to be made to some 30 regional and international bodies. “We’re going to make this international as well; we want to take this thing to the international level, so that Governments around the world will know that the Government of Guyana is not a Government that reflects the will of the people in our country; we’re going to inform all the Governments and international organisations of our position and our attitude as it relates to the Government,” Ramotar declared. Dr Jagdeo, also commenting on the party’s next
move, made clear that the PPP/C will remain vigilant – in the interest of preventing the future desecration of Guyana’s hard-won democratic gains. “We are remaining vigilant; over the next week or two, we’ll discuss our attitude to the new Government and our approach to Parliament. But in the meantime, we’ll be busy working on our election petition, reaching out to people, internationalising the issue, and mobilising people so that we’ll return to office,” he said. The election petition is expected to be filed soon and will detail the PPP/C’s challenge of the 2015 election results, supported by necessary documentation. The GECOM Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally, has indicated that the Commission is ready to defend its declaration of the results. Additionally, protest actions have been mounted across coastal regions outside GECOM offices.

Public Health Minister knuckles down to business --visits several health facilities in Bartica sub-district
NEWLY sworn in Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton on Saturday visited Region Seven, and met with and engaged health personnel attached to the Bartica Hospital, and the Four Mile, Riversview and Kartabo Health posts on the way forward for the health sector. During a very interactive session at the Bartica Hospital conference room, Minister Norton explained that the A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Administration’s plan is not to “break down and build over or reinvent the wheel,” but rather, to improve on what has already been established. Dr. Norton said that there are shortcomings in the healthcare system, not only in Bartica but throughout the country, and that the new administration will be working to tackle most of them. Health, because it involves training, can take some time before one can see the fruits of their labour, nevertheless, there are some key things that can happen immediately
to ensure health care is delivered equitably to all, he said. “We can only do so by coming and hearing from you. I, as the minister, must be looked at by you as your representative; we have got to work together as Guyanese to better the situation that we have at the moment,” the minister emphasised. The minister mentioned some key priority areas that the administration will be focusing on, such as infant mortality and training of personnel such as radiologists, general surgeons, and internal medical specialists among other specialised areas. Given that suicide is becoming more prevalent in Guyana, Minister Norton said that health institutions ought to play a greater role in helping to tackle this problem by offering counselling. He urged the staff to modify their work ethics and start being their brother’s keeper. “We cannot remain here in Bartica less we become vegetated, we have got to keep our interest in our profession.” he said. Another key area that the ad-
ministration will be looking at is job satisfaction, ensuring that nurses are paid handsomely based on their qualifications, he added. “We have to look at other things other than being down your throats that you have to get to work at 08:00hrs, we have to look at it holistically, and we have got to take your social welfare into consideration, if not you will not be able to deliver that which we expect of you. This is how we intend to do it. It is time nurses start getting benefits,” Minister Norton pointed out. Some of the issues raised at the Bartica Hospital were the need for better quality and quantity of drugs, more attendants and better security, more training programmes, and improved communication. They are also asking for a river ambulance and the establishment of a blood bank in the sub-district. In the case of the river ambulance that item will be in the budget however, adjustments need to be made to ensure that the boat is equipped to ensure patients are comfortable.
The Four Mile Health Post
Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton interacting with the Riversview Community Health Worker (CHW) in the presence of regional officials also lauded for their record
The minister noted that the issue of quality and quantity of drugs is a national one that the ministry will work to address. The other issues will be addressed shortly. Meanwhile, Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford said that health care providers should be the change they want to see. While there are challenges,
he said that “when it comes to life, we should always do our best, under any circumstances to ensure that we preserve life.” At Four Mile, Riversview and Kartabo, the Community Health Workers (CHWs) were commended for their efforts to ensure persons in their respective areas are receiving quality service. They were
keeping and public education efforts. Dr. Norton urged them to take advantage of the many training programmes offered by the ministry and to elevate themselves. On May 22, the minister made visits to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) and several health centers in Region Four. (GINA)

Spirit of national unity inspires clean-up initiatives By Ravin Singh
AS Guyana prepares to celebrate her 49th Independence Anniversary tomorrow, embodied in a spirit of national unity touted by the newly-elected government, several civil society groups along with the business community pitched in yesterday in the beautification project currently being executed across Georgetown. Upon appointment to office, President David Granger immediately declared that the traditional flag-raising ceremony on Independence Day will now be shifted to the Independence Arch located on Brickdam. At this point, a rehabilitation exercise was started to enhance the environs to facilitate the ceremonial event. Simultaneously, several Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and business
entities, supported by volunteers, extended their support in tackling the improper solid waste disposal, which has plagued the ‘Garden City’ for decades. Spearheaded by University of Guyana (UG) student, Sherod Duncan, the initiative executed yesterday was described as “an overwhelming success” by Duncan who boasted that the joint effort of the team enabled the cleaning of the entire Waterloo Street, Cummingsburg area. According to Duncan, the dedicated bunch arrived before 7:00am, and immediately began pooling their efforts to sustain the national cause. He explained that the support received was heartening since the business community did not only lend support in terms of equipment and other resources, but actually sent staff out to manually contribute to the

Part of the ‘Gizmos’ team hard at work yesterday exercise. This, Duncan said, was unimaginable since resources such as garbage bags, rakes, spades and food were already provided by these companies, mainly Gizmos and Gadgets and John Lewis Styles. But this contribution to national enhancement was not limited to yesterday’s efforts, as Duncan explained that plans are underway to aid in the clean-up exercise at the National Stadium, following the inauguration ceremony to be held tomorrow. Additionally, next Saturday, an exhibition will be hosted through a collabo-
rative effort with the Guyana Environment Initiative (GEI), a recently formed environmental protection group. And Duncan said two other clean-up exercises are expected to be held on the day along Thomas Street, between Church and Quamina Streets and at the intersection of Camp and Regent Streets. He explained that these exercises will also be joint efforts by his team and Green Acres School, which has already indicated their support. The groups represented at yesterday’s activities includ-
ed Gizmos and Gadgets; John Lewis Styles; Ruimveldt Life Improvement Centre; Guyana National Youth Council (GNYC); Youth Advocacy Movement (YAM); Come Alive Network (CANI); and several independent volunteers. Across Georgetown, other clean-up exercises have been ongoing in several communities supported by residents of the areas. Guyana will celebrate its 49th Independence Anniversary tomorrow after gaining independence from Britain in 1966.

Mumbai Indians outplay CSK to lift IPL trophy at Eden Gardens MUMBAI Indians’ (MI’s) love affair with Eden Gardens continued as they clinched their second IPL title following a crushing 41-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a lop-sided summit clash in Kolkata yesterday. Mumbai Indians posted an imposing 202 for five as skipper Rohit Sharma (50) and Lendl Simmons (68) rattled up a 119-run stand off just from 67 balls after being invited to bat. The Mumbai captain, who has an ODI world record of 264 and also a debut Test hundred, at the Eden Gardens, yet again exploded at his favourite venue. Sharma (6 fours, 2 sixes) and Simmons (8 fours 3 sixes) plundered 19 boundaries in their partnership. After Sharma and
Pollard’s dismissal in consecutive balls, burly West Indies batsman Kieron Pollard (36) and Ambati Rayudu (36 not out) led the side past 200. Mumbai bowlers complemented the good work of the batsmen as they took the fizz out of Chennai’s chase with a very, disciplined effort. They straitjacketed the Chennai batsmen, restricting them to 161 for eight as seasoned spinner Harbhajan Singh took the key wickets of Dwayne Smith (57) and Suresh Raina (28) in two overs. Kiwi pacer Mitchell McClenaghan took three wickets for 25 runs while his Sri Lankan pace colleague Lasith Malinga scalped two for 25. Mumbai had won their first title in 2013 at this very venue, defeating
the same rivals. Chennai have now lost four finals (2008, 2012, 2013, 2015) in six appearances. Chasing the huge target, CSK opted to take it easy and concentrated on building a platform after losing Michael Hussey (4) early. Smith and Raina bided their time and looked to consolidate but it meant that they managed only 31 runs from the first six overs. The required run-rate kept on going up and shot past 13 at the midway mark. Smith completed his half-century in 45 balls but only to be trapped lbw by Harbhajan in his penultimate over. Having made a grand comeback into the Bangladesh-bound Test side, Harbhajan completed his spell in style by dismissing Raina.
Looking to step out, Raina was brilliantly deceived by the veteran off-spinner who bowled a wide ball and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel did the rest behind the stumps. With Hussey, Smith and Raina back in the pavilion, and skipper Dhoni not looking in his usual elements, it looked as good as over for the yellow brigade who choked in an IPL final for a fourth time. Talk about Sharma and his sizzling love-affair at Eden Gardens, and he has done nothing wrong at the ground. A stunning 177 on Test debut, an ODI world record of mindboggling 264, an IPL century (60-ball 109) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and an unbeaten 98 in the opening match of this season. Chanderpaul axed for Australia ... From back page been explained to the Board. “There were discussions [with the board] but the point is we’d already made up our minds about what we wanted to do and they were probably thinking that players were not given this pomp and ceremony as they should but we thought that we’ve chosen the team, this is it, and it is up to them now to do that bit they’re supposed to,” the legendary former player and captain pointed out. “The point is that we have a job to do, we have to look after West Indies cricket, that comes first, and the point is that Chanderpaul whenever he retires will be given the accolades that he should receive, and I think it is only fitting that we should do so. “The guy has been a great servant to our cricket and when that time comes, I think he should be given that sort of a send-off that is expected of a player of his calibre.” Chanderpaul has played 164 Tests – the most by a West Indies player – and has amassed 11 867 at an average of 51. He is 86 runs short of overtaking Brian Lara (11 953) as the all-time run-getter in West Indies cricket. A heavy scorer throughout a sterling career, Chanderpaul has struggled in the last two series, managing 91 in three Tests against South Africa and 92 in a similar series against England. Last September, however, he plundered 270 runs – including his 30th Test hundred – in two Tests against Bangladesh without being dismissed and averaged 48 last June when New Zealand visited the Caribbean for three Tests. When West Indies were hammered 2-0 on the tour of New Zealand in late 2013, Chanderpaul was one of the few bright spots with an average of 64. Meanwhile, there are no surprises in the 12-man squad announced for the training squad which bowls off today at the Franklyn Stephenson Academy. West Indies face Australia in the first Test starting June 3 at Windsor Park in Dominica before clash in the second Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica, beginning June 11.

Calm Cook, sublime Stokes give England the edge … Cook makes 153 not out, 27th Test century, Stokes smashes 100 off 85 balls By Ed Osmond LONDON, England (Reuters) - Contrasting centuries by a relentless Alastair Cook and an inspired Ben Stokes lifted England to 429 for six at the close of a compelling fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand yesterday. Captain Cook batted all day to reach 153 not out, his 27th Test century, and Stokes provided the fireworks by smashing a hundred off 85 balls, the fastest ever made in a Test at Lord’s. Joe Root contributed 84 and England, leading by 295 runs, will start the final day of a fluctuating match as favourites to take a 1-0 lead in the twomatch series. “It is a great day personally Alastair Cook presses on to raise but more impor150 in England’s second innings. tantly we are in a good position as a team,” Stokes told the BBC. “I got close in the first innings and was nervous but to
Hull relegated as Newcastle survive on final day of drama By Mike Collett LONDON, England (Reuters) - Hull City were relegated and Newcastle United survived the drop on a dramatic final day of the Premier League season yesterday when West Ham United announced that manager Sam Allardyce’s contract was not being renewed at Upton Park. Newcastle’s 2-0 win over West Ham at a raucous St James’ Park, where Moussa Sissoko scored after 54 minutes and Jonas Gutierrez added a second in the dying minutes, meant they finished with 39 points while Hull ended on 35 and in the bottom three after drawing 0-0 at home with Manchester United. Minutes after Newcastle beat the Hammers, the London club put out a statement saying they were searching for a replacement for Allardyce. “The club have begun the search for a new manager after deciding not to renew Sam Allardyce’s contract,” West Ham said on their Twitter page after the defeat. Elsewhere there were also farewells for stalwarts Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Didier Drogba, who all played their last Premier League matches after long careers in the top flight. Lampard scored Manchester City’s opener in their 2-0 win over Southampton, while Gerrard scored Liverpool’s consolation in a stunning 6-1 loss at Stoke City, their heaviest league defeat since April 1963. Drogba, who is leaving Chelsea after his second spell at the club, was carried off by his team mates when he was substituted with an injury after 24 minutes of the champions’ 3-1 home win over Sunderland. The match was played in something of party atmosphere at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea were presented with the Premier League trophy at the end of the game. Tottenham Hotspur secured fifth place and a spot in the group stage of next season’s Europa League when they won 1-0 at Everton with Harry Kane scoring his 31st goal of the season in all competitions. Arsenal warmed up for next week’s FA Cup final against Aston Villa with a 4-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion, which included a hat-trick from Theo Walcott, but Villa lost 1-0 at home to relegated Burnley.
get over the line was brilliant.” England, resuming on 74 for two, lost Ian Bell to the third ball of the day, caught by wicketkeeper Tom Latham aiming a loose drive at Tim Southee. But Cook and Root dug in and the captain, 32 not out overnight, brought up his fifty off 122 balls. The New Zealand pace bowlers beat the bat a few times but Root remained typically unruffled and England took lunch on 175 for three. Root peppered the boundary after the interval and was closing in on the century he missed by two runs in the first innings when he hooked Matt Henry to Trent Boult on the long leg boundary, ending a fourth-wicket partnership of 158. Cook drove Henry Ben Stokes celebrates his straight down the ground hundred against New Zeafor three to reach his land at Lord’s yesterday. century, his second in two Tests after nearly two years without one in international cricket, raising his bat to the dressing room as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Stokes, who made 92 in the first innings, struck a few powerful blows before rain forced the players off for an
early tea with England on 261 for four. The floodlights were switched on at a gloomy Lord’s and Stokes launched a withering assault on the New Zealand attack. He reached his fifty off 57 balls before pulling Southee for three sixes over the leg-side boundary. The left-hander also flayed 15 fours all round the ground and a single off Henry took him to three figures, Stokes punching the air, raising his bat to all corners of the ground and embracing Cook as Lord’s applauded his stunning knock. He only added one more run before he edged spinner Mark Craig to Ross Taylor at slip and Jos Buttler, on 14, nicked Henry to Latham. New Zealand’s misery was not complete, however, Cook going past 150 in the company of Moeen Ali (19 not out) and the pair will resume in the morning looking to extend England’s lead.

Rosberg takes Monaco hat-trick after Mercedes gaffe By Alan Baldwin MONACO, (Reuters) - Germany’s Nico Rosberg celebrated a surprise hat-trick of Monaco Grand Prix victories yesterday after Mercedes blew championship-leading team mate Lewis Hamilton’s chances with a needless pitstop. The result, with double Formula One world champion Hamilton finishing third just when victory seemed assured, slashed Hamilton’s overall lead to 10 points after six of the season’s 19 races. The Briton had led comfortably from pole position until he pitted for fresh tyres when the safety car was deployed with 14 laps to go. “I’ve lost the race, haven’t I?” the disconsolate Briton enquired over the team radio after rejoining in third place behind Rosberg and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, neither of whom pitted. “What’s happened guys?” Afterwards, with the enormity of what had happened still sinking in, the stunned Mercedes driver told reporters: “I can’t really explain the way I feel at the moment. I won’t even attempt to.” While he did not blame the team, Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff indicated the call had come from the pitwall: “We thought the gap was
different to what it was. A complete misjudgement, I am so sorry,” he told the BBC. “We screwed it up for him.” The safety car had been deployed after Dutch 17-year-old Max Verstappen’s Toro Rosso smashed

Verstappen, who had provided some of the more exciting moments of
a largely processional race, was unhurt although the front of his car penetrated the plastic wall at the Sainte Devote corner. Rosberg’s victory was the German’s second in succession, after winning the previous round in Spain, and made him only the fourth driver to win three Monaco Grands Prix in a row. The others were Graham Hill, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. “I’m very, very happy of course. I know it was just a lot of luck today. Lewis drove brilliantly and would have deserved the win for sure but that’s the way it is in racing,” said the Monaco resident. “I know I got lucky today, I will just enjoy the moment now. Lewis was a little bit stronger this weekend so I have to work hard.” Russian Daniil Kvyat was fourth for Red Bull with Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo fifth and Kimi Raikkonen finishing sixth for Ferrari. Mexican Sergio Perez was seventh for Force India while Britain’s Jenson Button handed misfiring former champions McLaren their first points of the season with eighth place. Brazilian Felipe Nasr was ninth for Sauber with Verstappen’s Spanish team mate Carlos Sainz taking the final point for Toro Rosso after starting in the pit lane.

Pakistan pip Zimbabwe to clinch T20 series 2-0 LAHORE, (Reuters) - Pakistan edged Zimbabwe by two wickets in the second and final Twenty20 International yesterday to clinch the series 2-0 at a boisterous Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Needing 12 runs of the last over, number 10 batsman Bilawal Bhatti clobbered a six, ran for two and hit a four to seal a victory with two balls to spare and clinch the series that marked international cricket’s return to the country. Zimbabwe had earlier posted a strong 175-3 after Vusi Sibanda (49) and Hamilton Masakadza (39) gave them a strong start and Sean Williams scored an unbeaten 58 off 32 balls. Mukhtar Ahmed topscored for Pakistan with 62, while Umar Akmal contributed 30 but it was Bhatti’s unbeaten 13 off five balls which hauled Pakistan over the line. “What gives me maximum joy is that both the matches went without any issues and the Zimbabwe team also enjoyed a lot,” Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said at the presentation ceremony.
“I also want to thank the crowd, who once again demonstrated how keen they are to witness (international) cricket here.” Six years after an attack on Sri
MUKHTAR AHMED Lanka’s team bus in Lahore left six Pakistani policemen and a van driver dead, Zimbabwe became the first test-playing nation to tour the country for a limited overs series. Opting to bat first, the visitors got off to a strong start with Sibanda and
Masakadza adding 68 runs before being separated in the ninth over. Masakadza hit Bhatti for three successive fours before Shoaib Malik dismissed him. Williams needed only 26 balls to bring up his fifty and watched from the other end as Elton Chigumbura (21) hit Mohammad Sami for three consecutive sixes. Pakistan’s chase got off to a flying start with Mukhtar Ahmed hitting Brian Vitori for three boundaries in the same over. The batsman got a reprieve in the next over when Williams dropped him at backward point off Chris Mpofu but Vitori dismissed Ahmed Shehzad to end the 44-run opening stand. Pakistan lost two more wickets before reaching the 100-mark in the 12th over but Mukhtar Ahmed could not be denied his back-to-back fifty. Pakistan kept losing wickets before Bhatti’s cameo sealed the match in their favour. Lahore hosts all three matches of the one-day series starting tomorrow.
CLIVE Atwell had his first defeat in the professional arena on January 24, 2014. `The Punisher’ travelled to Acapulco, Mexico to tackle home boy Jhonny Gonzalez, with the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title at stake. Undefeated in 13 fights at the time, Atwell gave a good showing against his more experienced opponent. He had a point deducted in the seventh and 10th rounds and referee Laurence Cole stopped the contest in the 10th round to hand the Mexican a victory via a unanimous technical decision. Atwell turned pro in January 2010 and won the national featherweight title two years later. The fight against Gonzalez was his first CLIVE ATWELL outside of Guyana and Atwell would have the last laugh as the Mexican was dethroned by American Gerry Russell Jr last March. The 26-year-old southpaw forced referee Tony Weeks to halt the contest held in Las Vegas, Nevada at 37 seconds of the fourth round after Gonzalez was floored once in round three and twice in the following round. Atwell jumped three divisions and was crowned WBC/Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super lightweight (junior welterweight) champion last February after winning a split decision over Jamaican Sakima Mullings.

Golden Jaguars open camp for World Cup Qualifiers By Rawle Toney HEAD coach Jamaal Shabazz said that the current squad is a “manifestation of experimentation” from the Golden Jaguars’ last four matches, as the team held their first practice session ahead of their June 10 and 14 World Cup Qualifiers against St Vincent and the Grenadines. The team gathered yesterday at the National Track and Field and Football facility at Leonora under the guidance of Shabazz and his technical staff following the team’s announcement last Saturday. Behind Shabazz, the Golden Jaguars have played four International friendly this year, winning two (St Lucia and Grenada), drawing one (Barbados) but losing to Suriname 1–0. The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has called what is believed by pundits to be one of the best Golden Jaguars unit featuring Neil Danns (Bolton Wanderers) and Matthew Briggs (Millwall FC). Ricky Shakes, (Boreham Wood FC), will be making a return to the squad after an almost three-year absence. Shakes’ Boreham Wood FC teammate Sam Cox, along with striker Marcel Barrington (Leicester City) and goalkeeper Matthew Allick are the debutants on the team.
Shabazz said that the new overseas-based players give his side a lot more quality and their inclusion; forcing the other players to “battle for their places - which all coaches want - that type of headache when it comes to team”. Asked what the newly acquired players bring to the squad, Shabazz only stopped short of calling them “promise bricks” and quipped that “you cannot build a house on some bricks that a man promised you.” “When they get here, how they adapt to the team tactics and overall strategy will determine what they bring to the set-up. What we know for sure is they’ve all got good foot-balling ability but now talent is not enough, we need talent plus players and I am proud that Guyana is reaching that stage to demand that players bring more than just talent,” Shabazz said. Meanwhile, Shabazz also pointed out that despite the overseas-based contingent are all playing at a higher level than the locally based players, “there’s no inferiority in the minds of any of the players.” In fact, he stated, “The national team doesn’t have an issue of foreign or local and the person to decide how we build this chemistry has not been born yet. Therefore, when the team comes together, it will be a bunch of Guyana national team players fighting for

Nonetheless, Shabazz believes that the Golden Jaguars are more than equipped to withstand the ‘Vincy Heat’. “I’ve seen them play in February and last weekend when they won the Windward tournament and I’m very impressed with the progress of their team, as someone who is a strong advocate for Caribbean football. They’re an interesting challenge for us, since their attacking players are very quick and athletic.” Shabazz noted.

The players are expected back in the Caribbean after yesterday’s highly anticipated IPL final involving four West Indies superstars. “I hope to sit down with them and discuss my, and the selectors’ vision for how we want West Indies to play Test cricket going forward and how they possibly fit into that,” Simmons told Trinidad and Tobago Newsday. “I can’t rule anybody in or out of consideration until I do so.” Bravo and Lendl Simmons had announced their Test retirements, while Pollard took an “indefinite break” from first-class cricket earlier this year. Russell indicated he was not physically capable of playing the long form and Narine has been sidelined due to questions about his bowling action. “Obviously everybody wants to see those guys playing Test cricket for the West Indies because they are certainly good enough to play that format,” said Simmons who has been praised for inspiring the regional side to a gutsy come-from-behind home series draw against England. “I’m not aware of Bravo’s statement, but I haven’t spoken to any of them since I became coach”. Simmons, who was appointed coach in March, says he is eager to encourage a better relationship between the West Indies team and the region’s IPL participants.

Chanderpaul axed for Australia Tests …‘rapid’ decline in form given as the reason
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul’s illustrious 21-year career appeared all but over after he was dumped from the West Indies Test squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Australia starting next month. At a hastily arranged media conference here last evening, the West Indies chairman of selectors, Clive Lloyd, told journalists that the 40-year-old Chanderpaul had suffered a “rapid” decline in form and as a result, they had decided to look to the future. This decision, Lloyd said had been communicated to Chanderpaul in a letter. “Over a period of time, we have noticed a decline in his form and for the last 11 innings he has been averaging 16 and we thought the time had come to look towards the younger players, and that’s why he has been omitted. His decline in form has been quite rapid,” Lloyd explained, while flanked by newly-installed head coach Phil Simmons. “I just don’t think it is the last couple of games [that he has failed], this is going way back. I watched the games against India, South Africa and he hasn’t done as well as we

expected.” Lloyd continued: “I don’t think there was any bitterness [over the decision]. I think he’d realised the time is come. At 40 years old, it’s obvious you’re not going to be in the same shape as you were in 20 years ago. And if you’ve seen him play, you’d notice there was a decline, there’s no doubt about that. “People find it very difficult at time to retire … so we thought here it is, we must now make a decision, we’ve made a decision and we’re looking towards the younger people that we have. We have a lot of good young cricketers and we think it is time that we now inject the youth into our cricket.” The announcement put to rest several days of wild speculation over Chanderpaul’s future, with media reports indicating that the player had been dropped and then re-instated following pressure from the West Indies Cricket Board. And while WICB senior communications officer, Adriel Richard, yesterday refuted suggestions the selection panel had come under pressure from the Board to reverse their decision, Lloyd admitted they had been “discussions” with the board over Chanderpaul’s exclusion. However, he said the selection panel had been already convinced the decision do away with Chanderpaul was the best one in the overall interest of the squad, and this had See page 20 MONDAY, MAY 25, 2015
