Gov't clears over $1B in contracts …part of package to stimulate economy CABINET on Tuesday approved more than $1 billion in contracts aimed at stimulating economic growth and job- creation.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo announced Wednesday that the government had given its no- objection to the award of the contracts, which include a number of infrastructural development projects. An esti-

mated $400 million was spent earlier in the year for projects also intended to stimulate economic activities, create employment and enhance the economic and physical conditions of communities.

The contracts are: purchase of fire- fighting vehicles for the Guyana Fire Service. This contract was awarded to Angloco Limited for $36,615,998. Besides,

a contract for the alteration and renovation of the Bureau of Statistics on Main Street was awarded to Project Design Construction Inc for $118,976,873.

Meanwhile, a contract for the maintenance of industrial conditioning systems for the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation was awarded to Antartica Maintenance & Repairs for $79,958,000.

Additionally, for the supply of school uniforms- related materials for Region #7, a contract was awarded to Ravina International for $27,705,674. Also in the area of education, several contracts were awarded for the supply of textbooks for national distribution.

These include: Oxford University Press - £46,474.84; Maximillian Distribution £44,331.87 and Mohamed’s Bookstore Associates Ltd. - Us$496,794.32.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo also disclosed that contracts for the construction of Rip Rap River defences were approved for Region #3 – Essequibo Islands/West Demerara. These works will be done in Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo. Contract awarded to Samaroo’s Investment for $41,583,390; Endeavour, Leguan. Contract awarded to Samaroo Investment for $42,951,100; Maria Johanna, Wakenaam.

A similar contract was awarded to Nabi Construction Inc. for $18,345,071 for works along Turkeyen Dam, Pattensen & Lilliendaal Dam. By Ariana Gordon SOME $500M was transferred to the National Communications Network (NCN) and the Government Information Agency (GINA) by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration without approval from Parliament, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo said on Wednesday.

He also mentioned that the state broadcaster needs new energy and direction and though he did not call for the head of the Chief Executive Officer Molly Hassan, he told a news conference that he has an opinion on her which he would voice to the company’s board if solicited.

Regarding the $500M, the Prime Minister said it has since disappeared without a trace. “I have just seen a document where purportedly the former government transferred almost $500M to NCN and GINA and in all the reports I have for a certain period, I am still trying to figure out where this money gone,” Nagamootoo told a post- cabinet media briefing.

He said there is great need for the company to be thoroughly scrutinised, noting that NCN needs “a big brush to clean it up.”

There is a guard hut there that has more hair than the biggest barber shop in the world…there is growth on top of the hut where the guards are and nobody bothered to take the weeds out.”

Approximately 16 vehicles that have been parked in the compound for some time have been “cannibalized,” the Prime Minister stated. Asked whether he believes management of NCN should be changed at this point, Nagamootoo said “The CEO, I have an opinion that I would not mention here… “But said if asked by members of the NCN board, he would voice his opinion. “I think it needs new energy, that’s what I feel. It needs new energy and new direction,” he added. NCN’s new board is expected to meet for the first time today.

Cops up security at crime-plagued ‘Big Market’

POLICE have reportedly beefed up security around the Demico House Fast Food Outlet and the Stabroek Market which have been recently targeted by criminal elements.

Just recently a new gang have been robbing citizens in these two locations in the wee hours of the morning, during which they seemingly preferred to operate. Not so long ago, the police had pursued the gang as they were about to rob a male in front of the Demico Outlet, and the gang members had scattered in all directions on foot and bicycles.

According to ranks from the police outpost at the Stabroek Market Square, one male gang member has been apprehended and is assisting police with their investigations.

Yesterday a female rank at the Brickdam Police Station said that they are aware of the operations of this relatively

new gang, and as such have increased their police patrols in the area.

This new gang has recently began to stalk and rob unsuspecting citizens around the Stabroek area in Georgetown with no regard for the fact that the Fire Service and the City Constabulary offices are just a few rods away from the point of their operations.

During three robberies committed by the gang, taxi drivers operating in the same area, and vendors getting latenight sales failed to intervene.

Interaction with several vendors who peddle their food by night has revealed that the gang comprise mostly teenagers and are armed and dangerous, causing onlookers to fear them greatly.

Some have indicated that the gang members are working in close collusion with a group of men who gamble for cash in the late- night hours outside the Demico House Outlets, as soon as they close their doors for the night.

Some food vendors are calling on the Guyana Police Force to have several armed police officers stand vigil in the areas where the gang operates , since one cannot predict the moments they will strike an unsuspecting individual.

Just last week the gang pounced on a male security guard who gave his name as “Mohan” of Annandale Village, and robbed him using what looked like a black handgun to hold him at gunpoint, as they took away a substantial amount of cash, a brand new wristwatch, a Blackberry cellular phone, and his wallet containing his national identification card, and other valuable documents.

Not long after this incident, the same gang attacked an East Indian male in front of the Demico House Fast Food Outlet, Stabroek, Georgetown.

The man who was too shaken to engage in much conversation, however let on that he resides in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and was on

his way home after consuming alcohol with friends at a popular bar at Timehri.

The gangs number about eight individuals, inclusive of a lone female sporting a dyed “boy cut hairstyle.” This female is said to be acting as the” lookout person” in the group who alerts them if police happens to be nearby.

Security guard Edward Perez of the West Demerara district just last week narrowly missed becoming another victim by seeking refuge at vendors selling bread in the early morning hours.

This very gang was also seen twice recently loitering close to the gates of the Guyana Chronicle building

perched on bicycles with the very “dyed- hair female” in their company. It is suspected that it was this very gang which on two occasions last year, robbed two female Chronicle reporters of cash and their cellular phones quite early in the night as they were making their way home.

Raghunandan’s husband, Ramesh, owns two buildings in the borough and another in Pennsylvania, according to state records. The family also runs an electrical contracting business on Morrison Ave. in Soundview and shared a joint bank account worth over $100,000, investigators found.

Raghunandan’s lawyer, Todd Spodek, said

that many new immigrants sign up to receive benefits without fully understanding the requirements. “Unfortunately, this scenario is all too common in immigrant communities,” he said.

Putin uses Assad visit to talk up Kremlin role as Syria broker

Bad weather, border closures add to plight of migrants in Balkans

(Reuters) REFUGEES from Asian wars crossed into Slovenia from Croatia on Wednesday as border closures elsewhere forced them to find new routes to rich European countries and concern grew over the plight of those stranded in wet, freezing weather.

On the Croatian-Serbian border, thousands of migrants spent the night camped out at the Berkasovo-Bapska crossing after Croatia closed the gates.

And in an indication that refugees and migrants were still desperate to reach Europe before winter weather made sea crossings too perilous, two boatloads landed at a British military base on Cyprus - the first such arrivals on the island.

With many now trapped in deteriorating conditions in the Balkans, European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker called an extraordinary meeting of several European leaders to take place on Sunday.

Juncker invited the leaders of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia.

“In view of the unfolding emergency in the countries along the Western Balkans migratory route, there is a need for much greater cooperation, more extensive consultation and immediate operational action,” the commission said in a statement.

Europe’s biggest refugee and migrant crisis since World War II has seen hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa this year, with

hundreds losing their lives in risky voyages across the Mediterranean.

Hungary sealed its border with Croatia last week, blocking entry with a steel fence and razor wire. Croatia began directing migrants west to Slovenia, which has tried to stem the flow as people looked for new routes and bottlenecks built up through the Balkans.

Both Slovenia and Hungary are part of Europe’s passport-free Schengen Area while Croatia is not.

Most want to continue their journey on to Austria and Germany, the most popular destination.

Hazem Al Mousa, a 30-year-old Syrian from Aleppo, crossed into Slovenia on Wednesday near the town of Rigonci with his three sisters, brother and 84-year-old grandmother in a wheelchair.

“It is most important that my grandmother gets medical assistance and my sisters go to school and I’ll try to find some work,” he said. “I am so afraid that Germany will close its borders. I hope we will make it. We keep fighting and let’s hope for a miracle.”

(Reuters) VLADIMIR PUTIN used a rare visit to Moscow by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to talk up the Kremlin’s potential to help broker a political settlement to the crisis as he tried to show the West Russia has become a major player in the Middle East.

Assad flew to Moscow on Tuesday evening to thank Putin personally for his military support, in a surprise visit that Russian state media cast as a diplomatic coup.

It was Assad’s first foreign visit since the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011, and came three weeks after Russia launched a campaign of air strikes against Islamist militants and rebels in Syria that has bolstered Assad’s forces.

The Kremlin, which said it had invited Assad to visit Moscow, kept the visit quiet until Wednesday morning.

Putin told Assad he hoped progress on the military front would be followed by moves towards a political solution in Syria, bolstering Western hopes Moscow will use its increased influence to cajole Assad into talking to his opponents.

Moscow, which feels shut out by the West because of the Ukraine crisis, is keen to show its detractors it is pursuing military and diplomatic tracks simultaneously,

The visit also suggests that Russia, and not longtime ally Iran, has now emerged as Assad’s most important foreign friend.

Russian state TV made the meeting its top news item, showing Assad, dressed in a dark blue suit, talking to Putin, together with the Russian foreign and defense ministers.

Venezuelan President Maduro Psychologists offer MPs help says $88 oil price needed

(BBC News) VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro has called for an average global oil price of $88 (£57) a barrel “to maintain investments worldwide”.

He was speaking on Tuesday evening ahead of a technical meeting of experts from Opec and nonOpec countries in Vienna on Wednesday.

Venezuela, one of the world’s biggest oil exporters, has seen its revenues hit hard by plunging oil prices.

Prices have dropped from $115 a barrel in June 2014 to below $50 this month.

Gloomy forecast Mr Maduro said that “we are going to present proof, technical elements, at this meeting, that the average price needed to guarantee global investment in the next five to 10 years should be $88”.

At Wednesday’s gathering in Vienna, Venezuelan Oil Minister Eulogio del Pino is also expected to press for a meeting of heads of state of major oil producers.

Nevertheless, the Venezuelan government does not seem to be counting on an oil price rise anytime soon.

Presenting his projected budget to the country’s National Assembly on Tuesday, Finance Minister Rodolfo Marco said it was based on an oil price estimate of $40 a barrel for Venezuelan oil.

The government also predicted an annual inflation rate of 85% in 2015 and 60% in 2016.

Independent analysts estimate that inflation will be much higher, saying that it is already in triple figures.

Mr Maduro has suggested a meeting of heads of states of the world’s major oil producers last released inflation figures in December 2014, when it said annual inflation stood at 69%.

‘Economic war’ Opposition politicians say Venezuela’s high inflation is caused by government incompetence.

The governor of Miranda province, Henrique Capriles, wrote on Twitter that “today Nicolas [Maduro] confirms his inability to resolve the chaos his government has generated”.

He also called on people to cast their vote for the opposition in the upcoming

legislative elections on 6 December.

President Maduro says the opposition is waging an “economic war” against the government.

In his speech on national TV he announced harsher sanctions for “price-gougers”.

The government also announced a two-month extension to the closure of parts of its border with Colombia.

Venezuela says up to 40% of its products and huge amounts of subsidised petrol are smuggled across the border to be sold at a profit in Colombia.

JPS says light bills to go down more than 7% this month

(Jamaica Gleaner) JPS customers are to benefit from another reduction in electricity bills this month.

According to the light and power company, this month’s bills will go down by more than seven per cent as the company passes on savings from reduced fuel prices, to its customers.

The Fuel and IPP Charge on bills for October is $11.58 per kilowatt hour, compared to the charge of $13.75 applied to September bills.

JPS says this will result in the total cost of $26.19 per kilowatt hour, the lowest in ten years.

The company says a customer who consistently uses 165 kilowatt hours per month, will see their bills decline from about $4700 in September to just under four thousand four hundred dollars this month for a savings of over three hundred dollars.

(Trinidad THERE is a need to review and discuss the Parliament Standing Orders in order to avoid the abusive language and slurs of the past few weeks.

This was the view expressed by social activist Hazel Brown during a telephone interview yesterday.

Brown’s comment came on the heels of an offer from the T&T Association of Psychologists to share skills and professional training with government and political leaders.

The association described the language used in Parliament as “homophobic, prejudicial and abusive.”

During the budget debate several MPs received public criticism after using offensive language.

“I dont know whether training is the solution,” Brown said.

“The people in the Parliament are not stupid.

What they need is for more discussion and consensus around the rules and standing orders of the Parliament.”

T&T is not unique when it comes to unbecoming behaviour of MPs in the Lower House.

In several countries, debates sometimes lead to physical confrontations.

Kosovo, a country located in the Balkan region with a population of 1.8

million, saw its opposition disrupt parliament by throwing tear gas in the chamber last week.

Brown said the discussion was happening internationally as to acceptable behaviour in Parliament and T&T could use the opportunity to be a model for others to follow.

She said she believed women in Parliament could make the difference as they were more likely to be agents of change.

The psychologists association said it deplored the recent use of homophobic, prejudicial and abusive language among our political leadership.

42 infected babies at 2 hospitals; 18 dead KINGSTON, Jamaica – THE Ministry of Health has called on health authorities outside of Jamaica for help, in the wake of an outbreak of bacterial infection at the University Hospital of the West Indies and the Cornwall Regional H o s p i t a l , w h e re 1 8 o f 42 infected newborn babies have died since June.

The infections are reportedly caused by the Klebsiella and Serratia bacteria.

“As a precautionary

measure, I spoke with the executive director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency and they are on standby to give any assistance we may require,” Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson said at a press conference at Jamaica House Tuesday.

The alarming statistics were revealed not by the minister, but via a power-point presentation delivered by national epidemiologist Dr Karen Webster.

Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo’s attack on media houses that do not support his views does not appear would end anytime soon.

His administration had once referred to the private media houses as vultures and carrion crows, but that was a few years ago. Today, the scaling back of the hostility towards the media, as many would have expected, seems to be a pie in the sky. The former President latest outburst was delivered at a recent meeting with supporters, during which he implored them to boycott the newspapers which do not support the views of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C).

From a cursory look at things, Mr. Jagdeo was most likely encouraging his supporters not to buy the Stabroek News, the Kaieteur News and the Guyana Chronicle. These newspapers are not under his wings, and the latter he no longer controls. There are a number of issues that can be examined in light of the appeal by Mr. Jagdeo, but three readily come to mind that really give a useful insight into his thinking and general posture regarding scrutiny.

It would be recalled that at one time, the former President enjoyed a healthy relationship with Kaieteur News owner Glenn Lall, and even praised Lall for being a prudent businessman. It was only when the Kaieteur News became critical of his administration on the award of a slew of questionable contracts and a number of secret deals that the newspaper was deemed a rag, spreading hearsay and distortions of the facts.

Prior, hardly any condemnatory statement came from his government against the Kaieteur News, since in his view staying silent on wrong-doings in his administration was doing a good for his government. Things do not remain the same forever, and today, the Guyana Chronicle is no longer under his contagious gaze. This newspaper is now free to be balanced after for years it was suffocated in its attempts to be thorough and fair. Not strangely, the sordid reporting by this newspaper then was praised by Jagdeo.

Of course, party loyalists of the former administration, some of whom had no professional training as journalists were put in charge to manage the state media. And what came out was of no surprise at all as the nation was made to endure the substitution of verification for allegation-based journalism. Today, the Chronicle no longer

The act of giving people false hope that national unity is dependent on them abandoning what is constitutionally guaranteed is a violation of the constitution and racial pride, which it sets out to engender. No group must be led to believe that giving up/distancing themselves from their historical identity-African, East Indian, etc.- is a prerequisite for being Guyanese or a precursor for national unity when the constitution, the nation’s supreme instrument, protects and promotes racial and cultural identity. Those who seek to say to us we need to abandon genetic identity, we need to abandon their outlook because theirs is an act of denying us what is constitutionally ours.

To call on persons to abandon or deny pride in racial heritage is participating in an act to sever the roots from which that person’s/group’s history has sprung. A people without a root are like a reed in the wind. I am African by racial lineage.

I am Guyanese by geographic birth. I am neither African nor Guyanese, I am both. For flowing in my veins are the struggles of my ancestors who were brought from Africa to these shores in chains, brutalised, demonised and dehumanized, but never gave up the fight to be treated as human, with dignity and respect. Theirs was a labour-though toiling under brutish and harsh working conditions-that laid the foundation of this

Sadly, the hypocrisy seems not to stop. And the latest newspaper boycott call by Jagdeo points in this direction.

Some would recall months before the last elections, then A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Co-Chair Dr Rupert Roopnaraine made a call for the boycott of the State media and was roundly criticised by the Guyana Times.

The question has to be asked: “Why the Jagdeo PPP sees it wrong for Dr Roopnaraine to call for a boycott of the State media, but is silent on Jagdeo, who has also committed a travesty by calling for a boycott of newspapers critical of the party he leads”.

From the posture of Jagdeo, it appears as though he has bestowed upon himself special privileges and rights, in the sense that it is wrong for others to make reckless statements, but it is right for him to do so. This brutish reasoning is disgusting to say the least. But there is more to it. The latest boycott call tells of the former President’s ingrained abhorrence for differing views and opinions.

This does not speak well for transparency and accountability and it is not happenstance that his administration was dogged by accusations of lack of transparency and accountability.

My ancestors fought chattel slavery, secured abolition of the slave trade and won emancipation. In the immediate post- emancipation period, they started the first mass- based self-help system called cooperatives that saw acquisition of land for homes- the Village Movement- and other areas of developmental pursuits that included a system of local government. They fought for the right to vote, independence and republican status. Africans were among the early trade unionists, educators, medical practitioners, lawyers, entrepreneurs, skilled artisans, government officials, farmers, miners, legislators, labourers, gravediggers, etc.

This is the story of my people. A history, though marked with pains, sufferings and setbacks, is also marked with achievements and successes, both of which are taken in stride, have helped to shape who I am and contributed to the development of this nation.

It is a history not to be ashamed of, or to be buried, denied or denigrated. It ought to be told and taught, contextualised, respected and where all can learn from. Similarly, I want to allow the stories and contributions of other races to be told, taught and take their rightful place in this nation. For we all can learn from each other, continue to benefit from each other, and are stronger when the historical truths of our identities are told and each group is given their deserving credit for the role played in nation- building. This is an essence of national unity that continues to be ignored.

I am a proud African-Guyanese and not ashamed to be. I have no right to be, even moreso that the Guyana Constitution allows me to celebrate my people’s presence in a land among six peoples. Thus, objection is taken to the political talk that national unity requires an abandoning of racial identity. I am ashamed that the constitutional protection (Article 149) guaranteed me and every Guyanese from discrimination on the grounds of race is not respected by elected officials and others. Don’t come into my neighbourhood, attend functions, or talk to us about national unity as a futuristic notion when it is enshrined and protected for us today. Don’t disrespect us.

Tell us what you are going to do to respect our constitutional right to racial identity and ensure our protection from discrimination due to the circumstance of birth.

Don’t confront racial pride, confront racism. For those who use race/ethnicity to preach superiority, shape and execute policies and programmes therefrom, and drive fear into a group about the racial other, take the fight to them, expose and hold them to account for masquerading as nationalists in our midst. It is not the ordinary citizen who needs lecturing on respecting race and people’s identity; it is the politicians who use race in dividing the nation to acquire power and stay in power. This evidence is known, but no effort is made to confront racists in the midst, preferring instead the cocktail setting, laughing and toasting as the masses look on in puzzlement and disquiet.

The masses have by themselves found ways and means to co-exist. What the decision-makers must do is stop using race as a factor that denies the nation opportunity for national unity. They can start this by putting policies and programmes in place that protect every citizen from being discriminated against because of their identity. For years we have had complaints and evidence of racial discrimination but no lawmaker saw the necessity to develop laws that protect a citizen’s right to equal opportunity, be it in employment/economic/income opportunity, or based see page 7

NCN’s Hassan denies mismanagement claims CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of the State-owned National Ccommunications Network (NCN) is denying claims of mismanagement at the state-owned broadcasting house, saying she inherited the problems and have tried to fix them in the year or so she has been on the job.

Hassan was responding to a Guyana Chronicle article on Wednesday, which stated that her salary of close to $1 million plus a vehicle and driver, is more than that earned by some government ministers, and that the new Board of Directors was not pleased with her management of NCN. She said that she was asked to manage a badly wounded company and put down her achievements since taking up the post, as optimising employees’ output and improving the management and overall functioning of NCN. Hassan said the ills affecting the company were there before she joined.

She denied that the board could be dissatisfied with her performance, since the

board has never met and has not conducted a performance appraisal with her.

Hassan said her monthly pay packet, including a fridge allowance and a personal tea allowance, is no different from what was enjoyed by any of the CEOs of NCN including her predecessor, who acted in the capacity of CEO for two years after the substantive CEO had resigned.

She said that after taxes and other deductions the CEO’s salary is nowhere near the $1M “as is maliciously published by the Guyana Chronicle.”

“This seemingly orchestrated public attack on my character can only be interpreted as an attempt to undermine my authority as CEO of NCN and consequently, continue to infringe on staff morale.

“As a professional, I should not be subjected to this unfair level of scrutiny and misguided conjecture,” Hassan stated. She said her right to privacy has been snatched and that the security of her young children and husband is now “officially

“And this has farreaching social implications and consequences; this wanton attack and careless handling of confidential financial information by despicable individuals who have a clearly set agenda, should concern similar professionals within the industry and government and in fact any employee of a public organisation,” Hassan stated. Despite what she deemed as an unfair attack, she said she stands resolute in her functions as CEO of NCN and remains committed to the overall welfare of the staff of NCN.

The present corps of politicians has inherited a society with structures in place such as religion and racial holidays as recognition of the role each group played in the development of this country. And in some case, as in Arrival Day, which we were told was to celebrate the arrival of all indentured servants, which cuts across race, is today used as a divisive weapon to pit races against each other. During this national event, this nation has experienced politicians mounting the platform, not only to herald the achievements of their race but seeking to cast aspersions about the contributions of other races.

While the politicians are aware that the elephant in the room has been put and maintained by their peers, they lack the will to put system(s) in place to bring their colleagues to justice for violating the tenets of the Constitution and transgressing the rights of citizens. Instead, the issue of racial unity has become a sexy political topic in the absence of a vision to deepen and build on the structures that were established by predecessors.

But ours is a nation to build. We need to understand and appreciate our diversity, deepen and strengthen the structures that are in place that form the foundation to protect and respect each other’s identity and culture. The fault line on race is not with identity; it is with those who use race as a wedge to maintain their relevance, acquire power and keep us divided. Let it be known, I am Guyanese of African heritage. I am proud of both strains that contribute to my existence and to whom I am, because without the other I could not be, and in deference to both, I am who I am. No one has the right to disrespect my conjoined identity and deny me the honour of celebrating same. Similarly it is for others. Our individual and collective identities are protected from discrimination and we must celebrate it. This is what the Constitution requires of us and we must accept no less.

PPP in attempt to block salary increases …says Standing Order was breached THE opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will today use the convening of Parliament to block salary increases for government ministers and parliamentarians, including those on the opposition benches.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo Wednesday said that the government has gone ahead to pay out the heavily criticised salary increases, saying it had done so hastily and in violation of the parliamentary Standing Orders. The Parliament meets today for an address

by President David Granger.

Following his speech, the sitting of the National Assembly will proceed, at which time the Speaker will pronounce on whether or not he will entertain a debate on the motion the PPP has submitted to block the increases.

Jagdeo, in a press statement, confirmed that PPP parliamentarians collected their salaries, including the increases gazetted by the Finance Minister Winston

Jordan.

Jagdeo had said that the PPP would reject the increases.

He said that the law requires that the Order allowing the increases must receive the approval of the National Assembly before they could take effect. “Our motion is intended to call upon the National Assembly not to approve these increases but to reverse them,” Mr Jagdeo said in his statement.

He noted that no public announcement was made at any Cabinet press briefing or anywhere else, although the decision was made some time ago. The government has indicated that salary increases, including 5% for the President, 10% for the Prime Minister, and increases amounting to 50% in some cases for government ministers, was meant to correct anomalies with the salary structure and provide for a salary structure to cater for four vice- presidents who were appointed.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo told reporters on Wednesday that despite the PPP’s ramblings, government did not steal the “cookie jar.” The Prime Minister took a firm stance on the issue of reaffirming government’s commitment to working for the people.

When questioned about the increases, Nagamootoo stated that the government sees it as a necessary step, pointing out several factors which contributed to the move. Those factors include long- standing discrepancies between the salary of the Prime Minister and Attorney General and the addition of four vice- presidents to the leadership corps of the new government.

He explained that the administration was fully aware of the implications of its decision.

“We know that this was going to be [an] unpopular decision…but that does not justify why we didn’t go out to the grassroots and bottom

houses…we did not walk away with the cookie jar,” said Nagamootoo. In fact the Prime Minister made it clear that persons going into public office should not be expected to leave their private possessions and occupy lesser- paying jobs.

“I don’t believe that those who are saying that we have come into public office with an expectation that we will earn less ought not to seek office. If that is what happens in every sector, no one would want to be a judge, because

you will tell the lawyer when you become a judge you will get far less than perhaps what you dream of getting as a lawyer. Seeking elected office anywhere in the world carries a salary. It could be more or it could be less, but nowhere in the world do you see someone walk into an office and not expecting to be remunerated because they still have to live,” he emphasised.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that the increases were packaged and sold to the electorate in an ill manner; accepting responsibility given the remit of his office. “It was not explained fully and it was not properly packaged. I believe that the very fact that you are asking the question that there is 50% increase, shows the extent to which this matter has been allowed to spiral out of control,” he articulated.

“It’s not that we changed.

It is that we wanted to put in a system that would allow us to govern better…it is not the quantity of the money, it is the principle of correcting the anomalies that existed,”

Nagamootoo added.

He pointed out that under the PPP regime, he would have rejected increases when offered to ministers but in this case, the situation was different and needed to be adjusted.

On inheriting the handles of Government, Nagamootoo indicated that the APNU+AFC was confronted with a salary regime that saw permanent secretaries being paid more than junior ministers. Even now, that anomaly exists.

“I know down the line, public servants will be remunerated. We are waiting on the report that will come out of the Commission of Inquiry and we will be guided by it, said the Prime Minister.

It was also clarified that the President received an increase of 5%. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister announced that the government is considering a proposal for the increase of the salaries being offered to Regional Executive Officers.

The total package is some $600,000 with $300,000 being basic, tax- free salary.

Berbice NGO up in arms over construction worker’s death

By Jeune Bailey-Vankeric JUSTICE for the Unjust, a newly-minted Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Berbice, is calling for a probe into the mysterious death, back in March, of an employee of civil engineering firm Nauth and Sons.

The deceased, 23-yearold Timothy Simon was reportedly found afloat at his worksite at Yakasari, Black Bush Polder, where the company was building and resurfacing the roadways.

‘Justice for the Unjust,’ which has been keeping Berbice on its toes since its formation, has taken up the cause and mounted a protest outside the company’s office at Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice.

Besides calling for an investigation into Simon’s death, the group is seeking the intervention of the Ministry of Social Protection, as it has been revealed that although the youngster was in the firm’s employ for six years, the local office of the labour department has no record of this, much less the accident.

And according to Group Vice-Chairman Ishmael King, neither does the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) have any record saying that Simon had been a contributor, although he was employed by the company.

vant authorities need to look into the prevailing issue of private companies not paying NIS contributions for their employees, even though they’re deducting monies from their incomes.

“We need a new investigation; even the police need to investigate whether there was any criminal intent. This incident has resulted in a woman losing her son, who was one of the breadwinners of the home,” King said, adding: “He was on duty when he lost his life; he was in his prime. A lot of productive years were ahead of him, and yet, the family was never compensated. Don’t just raise the government ministers’ salaries but look after the issues of the people of this country.”

Meanwhile, Debbie Simon the lad’s mother, recalled that on the day in question, March 23, she had just come home from work at the sugar estate where she is employed as a weeder, when she saw two of Nauth’s employees approaching.

And from the way they were acting, she knew something was amiss. “I asked if anything happen to my son. ‘Did you kill him? I asked.’ They said he was doing a maintenance work.

Then they said it was during his lunch break; that he was sleeping when he jump up and say, ‘Y’all betting? I gon show y’all that I could swim across.’”

The bereaved woman recalled asking what her son was wearing when he went for a swim, and was told he had on a beach pants.

“They claimed that he went to test the water before taking the plunge,” she said.

They apparently forgot all about him, until sometime later, when they went in search of him and found his lifeless body. At least, that’s what they told her.

“On getting the message,” Simon’s mom said. “I went to the Number 51 Village; and I observed that my son’s neck was broken, because it was dangling.” The post- mortem, however, revealed that he died by drowning.

To make matters worse, on the day of the post- mortem, she said both the pathologist and the police asked her reputed husband to leave the mortuary. “He did not get to witness the post- mortem examination,” she said.

But what was even more heartbreaking was that the

very night of the post- mortem, those of her son’s workmates who were held for questioning were all sent away; they did not remain in police for the mandatory 72 hours.

To this day, she said, she has not seen hair nor hide of the elusive Mr Nauth. “I have never seen Mr. Nauth; I do not know what he looks like,” Simon’s mother said.

All she knows is that one Jerry, reputedly a supervisor, came to her house one day and said that the company was interested in standing the funeral expenses.

But there was a catch.

They reportedly told the clerk at Persaud’s Funeral Home where her son’s body was, not to allow the cost to exceed $100,000. As it turned out the company paid only $30,000.

According to Simon’s mother, her son was the company’s longest-serving employee. “He would work every day; even on his dayoff,” she said. “They would come and call him, and he would go; and he would go willingly. I have never seen a sympathy card from this company to our family.”

Meanwhile, Region 6 Labour Officer Mr Ronald Bissondial, has confirmed that no report of any industrial accident was ever made.

Pressed further, however, he said that seeing that the incident occurred more than a year ago, there was nothing the department could do about it now.

Guyanese cop gunned down in NY – wanted American dream to help family

By Neil Marks RANDOLPH Holder, the New York Police Officer, who was gunned down Tuesday night while trying to apprehend a suspected robber in Harlem, U.S.A., has been described as a kind-hearted soul who reached out for the American dream in order to help his family in Guyana.

His brother, grandmother and best friend in Guyana Wednesday shared fond memories of a young man who didn’t fuss about much, but was committed to working hard given the “rough life” circumstances forced him into as a boy.

Officer Holder grew up in Georgetown, and until 12 years ago when he left for the U.S., he slept on the same bed with his brother Kelon Noel, whom he had promised to help take to America for a better life.

“It was one of his dreams,” Noel said of his brother’s move to the United States. He had promised to take care of him until he could get him over to the U.S. The two boys had different fathers, but they were the only children for their mother, Melrose Lovell, who died of cancer when she was just 38.

At the time, Randolph was 17 and his brother was just seven years old.

mother Elizabeth Lovell, and an aunt, Maureen. They all lived in the same house, which was destroyed by fire in 2002.

Noel recalls that his brother really did take care of him, even at times helping to wash his clothes by hand.“He was more than amazing. Words can’t describe the person he was. He was so loving to me.”

The grandmother recalls that Holder’s first attempt to go to the U.S. was unsuccessful; he was denied a visa. Eventually, Holder’s father, who lives in America, applied for a permanent residence visa for him. This time around, with anxiousness, he made sure he was at the U.S. embassy at 3 a.m., some four hours before the scheduled appointment.

“He always had to be number one,” the grandmother recalls.

After she heard the news on Tuesday night, Ms Lovell said she could not sleep. “I could have died. The phone fell out of my hands and I had to sit in a corner. I felt weak, weak, weak. Like I didn’t know what to do; like I was confused, I didn’t know what to do,” she recalls.

“He was an alright person; cool and mild, quite.”

When Holder told her that he had become a policeman, she recalled that he said he enjoyed the job and was trying his best at it.

“He had loved it, you know,” she said, clutching a photo of her son in his uniform.

The two would communicate regularly. Whenever he did not call, she would call from the neighbourhood internet café. They had the usual casual conversation to check up on each other. There was no big concern; Randolph would only talk about not being able to arrange his clothes as his grandmother would.

“He would say, ‘I miss you with that, because you always had everything neat and nice.’”

Holder remembered to be kind to his grandmother.

He would send her cash gifts for her birthday, for Mother’s Day and for Christmas. In fact, she was looking forward

to him coming home this Christmas.

She was already thinking of what fish to fry for him.

“He loved fish; he loved fish.

I would cook it for him and he would say he enjoyed it.”

The officer’s brother said he always told him to be careful on the job, though Holder never gave an indication that he faced dangers on the job.“He would always say,” ‘Same old, same old, work is same old,’” Noel recalls.

“When I heard that news, it left me traumatised.” A relative gave the news form the U.S. as it came in. Randolph was shot. He was hospitalised. He was critical, but stable.

Noel said a prayer for his only brother.

And then, the dreadful news came.

Noel didn’t believe it until he saw it on the international news broadcasts.

“Up to now, I am still trying to process that. The thing had me real shake up.

Up to now I have a migraine headache and the headache isn’t going away.”

Holder’s best friend in Guyana, Quincy Christian, is still coming to grips with what happened Tuesday night. “We came up rough; we always tried to make good of every little thing. Everything we acquired, we shared equally.”

Christian’s family rented the upper flat and Holder’s family rented the lower flat of the building in Durban Street, Lodge, an area of Georgetown Christian described as “scary.”

The two were best friends from the age of three;

they walked to school together, and when they were teenagers, they worked at the same summer jobs painting or in a mechanic shop until they were able to save enough to buy bicycles to ride to school.

“The type of life we lived, we always wanted to do better for our families.

For him, going to America was the best thing.”

Christian recalls that whenever they spoke on the phone, Holder would describe the job with the NYPD as scary, but that was no trouble for him.

“He always used to say he was from Lodge, so he could survive anything.”

However he didn’t survive the bullet of the robber who shot at killed him Tuesday night in Harlem.

BOSAI, union still to agree on workers’ wages

A COMPROMISE is yet to be reached between BOSAI Minerals Company and the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) on the rates used to calculate wages for workers employed by the bauxite company.

At a meeting held at the Ministry of Social Protection on Tuesday, Minister within the Ministry Simona Broomes summoned the mineral company to produce a spreadsheet containing the names, designations, hourly rates and overtime rates of each worker.

The union and the ministry are of the belief that the company is shortchanging workers who are mandated by law to work eight hours a day, 40 hours per week, because the formula used by the company is not compliant with the regulations.

AGREEMENT In August, BOSAI and its workers came to an agreement that workers will stay on the job and work eight instead of 12 hours to prevent retrenchment.

“I have been advised that it is a practice of BOSAI to demonstrate what they think is fit as against what is law,” said Minister Broomes.

She explained that Deputy Chief Labour Officer Nadia Samuels made recommendations on the issue of rates calculation, but those recom-

But the minister made it clear that all workers are required to work eight hours a day, and that anything over eight hours constitutes overtime. “You cannot calculate Saturday, Sunday and holidays into one’s salary; you are shortchanging them,” she said.

Consultant to the Ministry of Social Protection Francis Carryl added that no other company is using the formula being used by BOSAI. “This is not rocket science,” the consultant added, noting that the formula is inaccurate and must be corrected.

NOT AN OPTION Minister Broomes stressed that legal compliance is not optional. She said, “The law is very straightforward” on the issue.

mendations were rejected by BOSAI. The minister explained that BOSAI is calculating the rates of employees in a manner that is not consistent with the regulations. “Speculations are there as to the reason why BOSAI, in their calculation, is sticking to the calculation at 365 days... The workers maintain that they are being shortchanged.”

Samuels said the ministry examined some 16 complaints before it by BOSAI workers, and on September 17 made recommendations to the company on the way forward with respect to the calculation of hourly rates.

She said a letter was sent to NAACIE General Secretary Kenneth Joseph and the company’s Senior Personnel Officer Trudel Marks, informing them of the unresolved issues and the option

But Minister Broomes held firm. She said like Bosai, the APNU+AFC government inherited many things but maintained that the law must be followed. “As a new government, we inherited a host of things but the law says eight hours.”

The minister stressed that each company operating locally must be compliant with the laws. “It is not an attack… the law is before us to guide us,” she said.

It was then that BOSAI’s personnel were called out on what appeared to be a misrepresentation of the facts by both NAACIE General Secretary Kenneth Joseph and Minister Broomes. Joseph said attempts were made by the union to have the issue of calculation of rates resolved, but to no avail. Asked by the minister about the company representative who indicated that BOSAI would not be changing the calculations, Joseph pointed to Marks.

Broomes then upbraided

Marks and requested that the company produce records to show they are complying with what is required. Those records are to be submitted to the Ministry of Social Protection today. “We are going to kill this problem; it is not a big one. What is written in law has to happen; we are not going to argue and dance that around,” the minister said.

DISRESPECTFUL A letter was issued to BOSAI on July 15 this year by the ministry, but was not acknowledged by the company.

Broomes said, “A letter was sent…you did not respond… it is disrespectful and this disrespect must stop forthwith.”

Upset over the manner in which her ministry and staff were treated, Broomes said such disrespect would not be tolerated. Marks attempted to apologise to the minister who was not quite receptive. The minister felt that the explanation was not one that justified the action of the company.

According to Marks, the company’s general manager Robert Shang was out of country and so an acknowledgement letter could not be issued.

There are several other labour issues related to BOSAI and its operations that are before the Ministry of Social Protection.

increasing wages of workers, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Simon Broomes has said.

Last week the Guyana Trades Union Congress

(GTUC) said in a release that it was advised by the company that the government had ordered a freeze on wages increase. However, Broomes on Tuesday dispelled such allegations stating that no such

directive was made. “That is very misleading. This government at no time indicated to any company that they ought not to pay their workers increases in salaries,” she told the Guyana Chronicle.

Last Thursday, the GTUC issued a call on government to clarify BCGI’s wage increase announcement and enforce the Labour Law. A press release issued by the GTUC said management of BCGI at a meeting with workers at its Aroraima location on Monday October 12 announced that there would be no wage increases for 2015 based on advice of government. “Since 2009 BCGI has been engaging in acts and actions contrary to the Laws of Guyana with the complicity of the Government of Guyana,” GTUC stated.

But Minister Broomes said she is unaware of any directive of that nature and believes there must be some misunderstanding. “I do know where it is coming from… there is no evidence before me to say that was said,” she told Guyana Chronicle.

Broomes added that as far as she is aware her ministry never discussed the issue of salary increases with BCGI. “Quite clearly, the government never had any engagement with that company saying not to pay workers’ increases. That is not true,” the minister said. Broomes added that allegations of that nature are puzzling as government would not issue such directives. “We comply with the law… I do not understand where this is coming from but I don’t want to think that they are even doing that. I believe there has to be some misunderstanding or miscommunication somewhere.”

The Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union (GB&GWU) by virtue of a Certificate of Recognition dated July 26, 2007 is the recognised bargaining agent for all non-management employees excluding security at BCGI. The GTUC said that the announcement by BCGI on the non-payment of increases to workers was repeated on Tuesday October 13.

By Ariana Gordon GOVERNMENT is set to buy out the 10 per cent shares held by the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) in the Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) in a bid to have some level of control over the entity.

This was announced yesterday by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo at the weekly post-Cabinet briefing at the Office of the Presidency (OP).

According to the prime minister, government is working towards buying DDL’s shares in the BBCI which amounts to some $45M. “Cabinet accepted the offer made by the Demerara Distillers limited (DDL) to sell its shares in the Berbice Bridge Company to the Government of Guyana,” he said.

“The offer comprises of $40M shares held by Demerara Contractors and Engineering Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Demerara Distillers Limited, and it represents 10 per cent of the shares issue of the Berbice River Company,” he told reporters yesterday.

SOME SAY Noting that the government is doing all in its power to ensure that it has a say in the day-to-day running of BBCI, the prime minister said: “We are taking our promise to a further stage of ensuring that our voice is not a feeble one, and that the dominant partners in the Berbice Bridge recognise that we are serious. We are prepared to go even further.” Government, Nagamootoo said, has been in talks with DDL over its shares in the company, and Finance Minister, Winston Jordan has been asked to continue talks with the company with respect to the sale of shares.

He has also been advised to seek the best possible price for the shares.”

He said that while government is well aware that the asking price is $45M, it is hoping that DDL, “as an outstanding corporate citizen of Guyana, would agree to a reasonable settlement.”

EVEN MORE SHARES Asked about the likelihood of buying even more

shares, Nagamootoo said the thought has crossed the government’s mind, and that it already has “broad feelers” out to ascertain which companies may have an interest in selling it their shares.

“I believe that what Government seeks to do is to send out a broad feeler to all those who have shares. We know that a major shareholder has raised a flag; a very big flag, and we are going to look at that on its merit,” he said, adding: “Yes, we are talking to shareholders, but the offer that we have from DDL was

in the sum of $45M.” He said that once government obtains additional shares in BBCI, it will be moving to lower the bridge tolls. “As you know,” the prime minister said, “government is determined to reduce the toll attached to the Berbice River Bridge.

“And we had taken measures, including the provision of ferry taxis, to ease the pressure and burden of the people who use the bridge.

“But we have come to the position that while we are negotiating with the Bridge Company to effect a reduc-

CAMPAIGN PROMISE Back in July of this year, government reduced the BBCI toll, stating that it had made a promise to the people of Berbice to do so while it was in Opposition, and more so while on the campaign trail.

The lowering of the bridge tolls is among measures employed by the government to ease the financial burden on those who traverse the bridge.

Additionally, government had committed to offsetting the losses the Bridge Company would have incurred as a result of the lowering of the tolls.

Government did acknowledge, through its Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, that while BBCI is a private company, there is legislation in existence

that gives it some element of freedom where fares are concerned.

He argued that while the Bridge Company has every right to recover monies made on its investment, a “responsible government” has every right to represent the people.

NO HEADWAY The Board of Directors of the BBCI and Christopher Ram, government’s main negotiator, have not been able to make progress with respect to the lowering of the tolls.

There exists an ordinary share capital of G$400M, while the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) has G$950M in preference shares, coupled with fixed dividends. The equity shareholders are Demerara Contractors Limited (G$40M); Hand in Hand Motor & Life Insurance Company (G$40M); Secure International Finance Company (G$80 million); Queens Atlantic Group of Companies (G$160 M); and the NIS (G$80 M).

North- West school wins FAO nutrition contest

THE North- West Government Secondary School is the first- prize winner in the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Secondary Schools Home Economics Competition 2015, which was run off yesterday in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

The venue was the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue, where hundreds turned up for the judging and awards presentation ceremony.

Second- prize winner is Beterverwagting Secondary School and the third- prize winner is New Amsterdam Secondary School.

First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger delivered the feature address and presented the

trophies.

Chief Judge was Penelope Harris, Principal of the Carnegie School of Home Economics and with her was Stacia Herbert and Abigail Caleb.

Presenting the second and third prizes were FAO Representative Reuben Robertson and Patrick Chinadoo of the Ministry of Education.

First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger expressed pride and joy at being asked to present trophies to the first- prize winner North West Secondary, stating that she has roots in that region, and for her it was like making a presentation to one’s family.

In 2014, the school won the second prize, beaten only

Meanwhile, Chief Judge Penelope Harris announced that the winner of the first prize was a unanimous decision. “In fact the entry was so good, we had to sit and wonder where could we deduct some marks.”

Past first- prize winners were Kwakwani Secondary School; Queen’s College; Cummings Lodge; St. Joseph High School; Kwakwani again in 2011; West Demerara Secondary; New Amsterdam Secondary; and Agricola Practical Instruction Centre.

Other schools that came in for honourable mention but were not slated for prizes include J.C. Chandisingh; Covent Garden Secondary School; Hope Secondary and Diamond Secondary.

Senior Education Officer Carol Benn rated the entries as being very creative and well prepared, but expressed disappointment with the turnout this year. She called on schools to up the ante and show an interest in the activity which brings benefits, not only to the schools, but to all and sundry, particularly in the face of a national threat of chronic non-communicable diseases.

The theme of the exhibition was “Promoting Root Crops in Guyana.” Participants were required to use root crops, combined with other nutritious ingredients to come up with interesting and tasty dishes that do not pose a threat to health.

Participants were advised also to be wary of fast foods or “junk foods” which are generally known to be high in fats, sugars (high carbohydrates), sodium (salts), and trans fats. Processed foods and foods containing additives such as food colours and flavours also constitute a threat to good health and should be avoided, particularly by persons with diabetes, hypertension and heart-related conditions.

Such diets are known to be the key drivers of chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, kidney diseases and cardiac illnesses.

ILO: Future of work depends on future of women at work

WORLDWIDE, women earn approximately 77 per cent of what men earn, and continue to be primarily responsible for household chores and family responsibilities.

That’s according to a recent study coming out of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Despite progress in areas such as education and maternal mortality, the world has fallen short in bringing women’s employment, earnings and working conditions in line with those of men.

Globally, the labour force

participation rate for women is 50 per cent, compared to 77 per cent for men. Yet, having more women in the labour market is not enough.

The quality of jobs is paramount.

While 51 per cent of ILO member states provide at least 14 weeks maternity leave, this still leaves millions of women without the fundamental right to adequate maternity protection.

AT RISK According to the ILO, many women are at risk of violence at home and

at work. Violence at work affects women’s ability to access employment, remain in employment and impacts on productivity. Women are under-represented in decision-making positions at work, and while women manage over 30 per cent of all businesses, this tends to be concentrated in micro and small enterprises with only 19 per cent of women sitting on boards of larger companies. Only 5 per cent or less of CEOs of the world’s largest corporations are women.

There is still much to be done.

“Cultural traditions and economic conditions cannot excuse discrimination and other violations of fundamental human rights. Countries, whether high or low income, cannot any longer afford to lose out on the social and economic potential of gender equality. Recent research shows that if women participated in the economy identically to men, this would add up to US$28 trillion or 26 per cent of annual global GDP in 2025. If money talks, people should be listening to these extraordinary figures,” the ILO underscored.

It was noted that ambitious policies that succeed in transforming gender norms and relationships in society and at work, and hence addressing structural inequality, are required.

ILO equality conventions, addressing discrimination, equal remuneration for work of equal value, maternity protection and work and family measures, including access to parental leave as well as quality and affordable social care services for dependent family members, provide the road map for action. Recent standards of particular relevance also promote decent work for domestic workers, the creation of social protection

floors and the formalization of the informal economy.

“SHARING THE CARE” More and more countries are adopting public policies that tackle the root causes and consequences of gender inequality and discrimination in all areas of life. “Sharing the care” has been a central focus of these measures.

As ILO Director General, Guy Ryder stated on International Women’s Day, “Promoting decent jobs for women is imperative, now and for the next generation… It is a matter of rights and what is right for women and for sustainable development.”

COPA to increase flights to Guyana

COPA Airlines will be increasing the number of flights to Guyana from two to four days per week, following the positive response from Guyanese travellers.

The airline made this announcement yesterday, stating that it was given the green light after their request to increase the number of flights was approved by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority.

Speaking yesterday at a press conference, COPA’s Regional Sales Director Deigo Parra said that “the airline has been extremely proud to serve this country, its people and provide a way by which Guyana’s tourism product could be further enhanced.”

In this regard, he said the airline was pleased to announce that it will be adding two more flights to its Guyana-Panama route with onward connections effective December 16, 2015.

These flights will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, bringing the total scheduled flights to four - Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

“Our partnership as a star alliance member means that there are many more opportunities for Guyanese

to travel, covering 1,321 destinations in 193 countries with more than 18,500 daily flights and more than 1,000 VIP lounges,” said Parra.

Rated as the number one on-time travel service in Latin America and travelling to 74 destinations in 31 countries, the airline is urging persons to enrol for a frequency- flyer card with their ConnectMiles programme, because of the world- class service which is being offered.

Meanwhile in brief remarks, Sales Manager of the airline Nadine Oudkerk noted that the response from Guyana over the last year has been overwhelming with very healthy load factors in their flights departing and landing in Guyana.

Further, given the enhancement of their service, she announced that they are looking to forge greater social partnerships with the people of Guyana. “The airline takes very seriously our corporate social responsibility and as such we are always ready to assist groups or entities involved in fostering social development, in giving travel tickets or donations of necessities.”

Meanwhile earlier this year, Copa added five new destinations to its already extensive route network.

Toddler warded after mini-bus rams car

By Shirley Thomas A THREE-year-old girl is now warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) with injuries to the head and eyes after a motorcar in which she was travelling on Sunday morning on the Haslington Public Road was rammed off the road by a Route 44 (Mahaica) mini-bus.

The child, Angel Baynes of 64 ‘B’ North Haslington, East Coast Demerara, prior to the accident, was attending Mount Oliveth Wesleyan Church, pastored by her grandfather Rev. Franklyn Baynes when around noon, she began vomiting and developed a high temperature.

The family became concerned and her father Mark Baynes decided to take her to the Nabaclis Health Centre to be treated. Baynes said that while he was driving his Toyota BB at a moderate speed to the health centre, a speeding Mahaica mini-bus suddenly slammed into it on the driver’s side.

The impact propelled the car into a parked Toyota Raum and came to an abrupt stop. The child who was in the rear seat of the family car was pitched headlong into the front windscreen and suffered a deep puncture to the head. In the process, fragments from the windscreen got into her eyes and she also suffered injuries to her neck and arms.

Instead of going to the Nabaclis Health Centre, she had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was admitted to theatre for surgery. Surgery was done to her head and flints were extracted from her eyes. She is due to return to the theatre today.

The injured child, a pupil of the Cherished Lambs Nursery School on Brickdam, is the first of three children for her parents Felicia and Mark Baynes.

Meanwhile, the driver of the mini-bus, a pandit who said that he was on his way to a “religious work” was taken into custody and is assisting the police with the investigation.

President assists teen who lost SBAs, books in fire FOLLOWING a fire which destroyed her School-based Assessment assignments (SBAs), among other family possessions, Berbice High School student Sarah Shivpersaud was elated at being the recipient of a cash donation from the Ministry of the Presidency.

The President’s Public Information and Press Services Officer Ms Lloyda Garrett, travelled to the Ancient County on behalf of the Head of State President David Granger to make the presentation at the Lot 56 West Canefield Settlement, East Canje site, where the

two-bedroomed cottage was once located.

Garrett told the distressed family that President Granger after reading the article in the Guyana Chronicle had expressed concern as the teen was preparing to write the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examination (CSEC) next year.

“The President has noted that education is the key to a good life. I know it can be very difficult at this moment as you prepare to write your exams. The President has sent today an initial donation from the government of $50,000…”

Meanwhile the fifth former, along with her mother Lalita Bedessie, has expressed gratitude for the kind gesture, and has issued a call for the private sector to assist in having her home rebuilt.

“If persons can give some wood, I would get persons to help me build. I do not want bed and household articles at this point. I just need assistance in rebuilding so I can have somewhere to rest my head,” she pleaded.

Meanwhile Sarah, who plans to pursue a career in law, said her teachers are very supportive and so she would be returning to school

next Monday.

On Sunday Sarah and her mother were spending the weekend away from their home when they received news that their oneflat, two-bedroomed wooden house was on fire. By the time they arrived on the scene at approximately 18:30 hrs, the structure was flattened, and smoke was emanating from the debris. Two fire tenders from Rose Hall Estate and New Amsterdam were already exiting the area, having brought the blaze under control while preventing it from spreading to nearby houses.

However, she is unclear as to what may have caused the blaze, since she did not cook meals on Friday and would not have had to light the kerosene stove. Neither was there electricity and as a result the teen was forced to study with a fuel lamp.

However, subsequent to the fire, Bedessie said fire ranks had discovered clothing with

a flammable substance.

Meanwhile, the mother was unable to estimate her losses but revealed that there were four beds, wardrobes, a chair set, wares, kerosene stoves and several textbooks. The family is currently staying with friends and they can be contacted on telephone number 639 - 5002.

Cabinet approves appointment of seven new REOs

GOVERNMENT has approved the appointments of seven new Regional Executive Officers (REOs), Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo said on Wednesday.

by Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan for the appointment of Regional Executive Officers for seven of the 10 administrative regions.

Appointments were approved for Leslie Wilburg to be REO, Region 1; Rupert Hopkinson, REO Region 2; Dennis Jaikaran (Snr), REO Region 3; Pauline Lucas, REO, Region 4; Roderick Edinboro, REO Region 5; Veerasammy Ramayya, REO Region 6; and Gavin Clarke, REO Region 10.

The seven newly appointed REOs join, Peter Ramotar,

REO Region 7, Raphael Downes, REO Region 8 and Carl Parker, REO Region 9.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has also approved “an enhanced remuneration package” for all REOs which total approximately $600,000.

The package includes a basic monthly non-taxable salary of $300,000, $70,000 duty allowance which is also non-taxable, and a $10,000 allowance for cellular phone. The REOs will also be entitled to 42 days vacation leave, dutyfree concessions (Scale A), Vacation allowance, gratuity, payment of residential landline bill, (local calls only), the payment of electricity charges at place of residence, the provision of security at the place of residence and the provision of a government vehicle and driver. Each REO will be contracted for three years.

Broke into house for soap

“I BROKE into the house to use his soap” pleaded 21-year Cyril Winter, who was caught red-handed trying to break into his uncle’s home.

Standing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday Winter pleaded guilty to the charge that on Sunday, October 18 at Bamia, Soesdyke-Linden Highway he broke into the dwelling house of Glen Winter with intent to commit a felony.

According to the court report, the uncle of the accused was away in the interior and left his house secured. However neighbours saw the 21-year-old break into the house through a window and raised an alarm. Cyril, when confronted by the neighbours said: “I only looking fuh a soap in he house.”

When questioned by the Chief Magistrate about his actions Cyril in a soft tone told her that he was going to bathe at his uncle when he realised he didn’t have any soap.

The matter against him was discharged with the magistrate’s last words before granting him his freedom being: “Young man, you should learn to ask permission before taking somebody’s belongings.”

Coast Guard had ammo for sale - police

A GUYANA Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard Officer was yesterday granted $75,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for allegedly being in unlawful possession of several rounds of ammunition.

K e v i n Va l l a d a r e s , a 19-year-old private of Lot 125 Amelia’s Ward, Linden pleaded not guilty to the charge which said that on July 20, 2015 at Linden he had 82 rounds of ammunition which he was offering for sale.

Valladares’ lawyer Mr. Clyde Forde in an application for reasonable bail explained that his client was on a shooting exercise when rain caused its cancellation. The officer mistakenly went home with the bullets.

Forde said that the soldier was also charged by the Guyana Defence Force and

had been incarcerated at Base Camp, Ayanganna for 24 days and for some time with the Coast Guard.

However the prosecution’s story was different. According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Valladares was part of a training exercise with the United States and GDF Coast Guard at a firing range. This was later cancelled due to the inclement weather.

Jones further pointed out that the officer failed to lodge the ammunition, returned home to Linden and began to seek sales for the bullets.

Valladares was alleged to have been caught red-handed in a sting operation.

The case was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court for November 17 and the officer was released on bail after the prosecution offered no objections.

Teen accused of having gun in crotch A 17-year-old young man who is accused of being caught with a Magnum revolver and ammunition at a house in Kitty was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

The youth, a mason of Sophia, yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on Sunday, October 18 he had a .37 Magnum revolver and five rounds of ammunition in his possession while not being the holder of a firearm licence.

The defendant’s lawyer, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat in his application for bail pleaded that his client was a juvenile with a strong alibi which was that police on patrol found a gun in the bush along Alexander Street, Kitty and held on to his

client who was the only person walking along the road at the said time.

But according to the prosecution’s facts which were narrated by police corporal Deniro Jones the teen was arrested with the gun and ammunition which was found in his pants crotch during a search the police conducted at a known drug house in Alexander Street, Kitty.

Corporal Jones said ballistic tests were currently being carried out on the gun to aid in other police investigations.

The Chief Magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s objection and remanded the teenager until November 9 when he will appear in Court 10 before Magistrate Alex Moore.

Motorcycle owner does good deed TWENTY-year-old Lester Hopkinson shouted loud praises to ‘Allah’ after he was set free yesterday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

He had been a remanded prisoner for almost a month on a simple larceny charge.

Hopkinson was accused of stealing a Honda motorcycle valued $750,000, the property of David Troy on June 23 at Alexander Street, Kitty.

He was placed on $100,000 bail which he was unable to post and he remained in the Georgetown Prisons until yesterday.

At yesterday’s court proceedings Troy stated that he

wanted to withdraw the case against the defendant. He assured the court that he was not forced nor threatened to do so.

The matter was withdrawn and Hopkinson of 79 William Street, Kitty, Georgetown was placed on a 12-month bond to be of good behaviour.

According to the police report, Troy discovered his motorcycle missing. He made a report to the police station and sometime later cops on patrol saw Hopkinson riding a motor-bike and acting in a suspicious manner. They apprehended him and discovered that the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

McCullum did not mention ‘match-fixing’ to ACSU BRENDON McCullum did not mention ‘match-fixing’ in a statement relating to an approach made to him

by Chris Cairns, according to John Rhodes, the Australasian head of the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU).

Cairns, who is on trial at Southwark Crown Court in London and denies two counts of perjury and perverting the course of justice, was claimed to have discussed spot-fixing during a meeting with McCullum in a Kolkata hotel room in 2008.

However, according to Rhodes, to whom McCullum admitted the approach three years later, following an ICC anti-corruption briefing, the New Zealand captain’s statement in February 2011 mentioned a “business proposition” but did not include an explicit reference to match-fixing.

Cairns then started to explain using a pen and paper: “He was telling me you can make a great deal of money.

He told me you could make between US$80 000 to US$250 000 a day. He told me that he had never done it on an international match.”

Pownall put it to Rhodes that the conversation be-

tween McCullum and Cairns concerned betting, not an approach for McCullum to underperform in a particular match.

Rhodes responded: “The inference is in the statement. It is clear to me that an approach is being made by Mr Cairns to Mr McCullum.”

“To fix matches or to underperform?” asked Pownall.

“Yes,” said Rhodes.

Pownall continued, to which Rhodes replied: “It doesn’t.”

When asked why he had not requested McCullum to clarify what he meant, Rhodes stated he was not “in a position to put words” into his mouth.

The ACSU, Pownall suggested, had done “nothing” in response to McCullum’s statement, although Rhodes said that, as an unsanctioned tournament, the Indian Cricket League (ICL) was beyond the jurisdiction of the ICC. The allegations, Pownall suggested, were “potentially momentous”. However, Rhodes argued that without corroboration from any other source they remained unsubstantiated.

Wayne Forde to lead ‘Team Integrity’ slate for GFF Elections WITH the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) elections set for November 14, president of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club is the first to announce his slate to contest the elections heralded by many as the most defining moment in Guyana’s football.

Forde, a long-serving administrator of the game is regarded by many as a ‘clean cut’ individual who would make a positive impact on the sport of football, if he decides to step into the realms of administration at the highest office in the country.

Calling his slate ‘Team Integrity’, Forde will be joined

by Attorney-at-Law Thandi McAllister, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Brigadier (Ret’d) Bruce Lovell and Rawlston Adams, General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Adams would have served under the embattled Christopher Matthias, but his tenure as vice-president of the GFF was short-lived after he refused to continue under the previous administration.

A release sent to Chronicle Sport yesterday stated that the “grouping will form the management team along with other committee members, who will be drawn from the clubs and associations around Guyana”.

‘Team Integrity’ also stated in the release that they are committed to transforming the way football is administered in Guyana and will present their manifesto as part of the launch today at the Pegasus Hotel.

Rhodes added that he had “no reason” to believe McCullum had not been telling the truth. However, he said that as a field officer, his job was simply to collect information - it was up to his superiors to investigate his findings.

Rhodes recalled that McCullum had met him in Nagpur, along with his then-captain, Daniel Vettori, whom Rhodes stated did not contribute to the meeting and had been attending to provide support for McCullum.

However, under cross-examination, Rhodes was shown a statement made by Vettori in February 2014, in which he said he had asked Cairns to buy him a diamond ring with the money he was owed for undertaking a promotional tour for an Indian toothpaste company after the Champions Trophy in 2011.

Asked why his evidence had omitted this detail, Rhodes said that he did not recall Vettori’s comment. “What I am saying is that if Mr Vettori is

saying to me that he said that to me in Nagpur, then I will accept that.”

Rhodes told the court that he had not made any notes of that conversation, adding that he had lost his diary for 2011. He also admitted that he had not made a note of McCullum’s request that New Zealand Cricket should not be told he was making a statement.

Sir Ronnie Flanagan, the current chairman of the ACSU, also gave evidence. He denied that Cairns had been made a scapegoat to deflect media criticism into his unit’s lack of success in tackling corruption.

“Corners were cut, normal action was left to one side with a view to achieving the scalp of Chris Cairns,” Pownall suggested.

Flanagan replied, “Absolutely not”, adding: “If scalp turns out to be an appropriate description, I think it is an absolute tragedy.”

Ponting voices opposition to day-night Tests RICKY Ponting has spoken out strongly against the looming day-night Test match, to be played in Adelaide between Australia and New Zealand, reckoning that the experimental format and pink ball will have to stand up to the scrutiny of the

players involved if it is ever to have the credibility of the existing five-day game.

On the night he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in Melbourne, Ponting said the Cricket Australia-driven concept was something he had always opposed. This was

largely due to his belief that Test match cricket should be kept as the purest possible contest between bat and ball, while the game’s two other formats served as greater vehicles for entertainment and night-time events.

“I’ve actually been against

Ricky Ponting it the whole time,” Ponting said. “I mean I understand the reasons behind wanting to innovate and wanting to be different, but at the same time I think Test cricket is all about history and tradition as far as I’m concerned.

“But I guess the game has to go on and move forward.

It will be interesting to see what the players make of it all and how much they enjoy the occasion. That’s what it comes down to at the end of the day. The players have to

want to enjoy it and have to want to be a part of it and want to make it something extra special and let’s hope it works out that way.”

Earlier this week, Ponting gave evidence via video link in the perjury trial of Chris Cairns. While unwilling to comment any further on the trial, he said Australia had been a leader in educating players about the murky world of spot-fixing and that he was eager to ensure the game continued to be closely monitored for any evidence of impropriety.

“The way the game is it maybe does open itself up to more of that kind of thing because there is so much spot-betting and so many things that you can bet on,” Ponting said. “Don’t worry, everyone is doing their absolute utmost to keep on top of that stuff, but as we know at the end of the day it’s the players, it comes down to the players.

“I know that everything

that’s been done within Cricket Australia has been absolutely first-class. We’d be leading the world in so far as that sort of education is concerned so all we can do is to make sure that we keep doing the right thing and make sure we keep our players out of it all.”

As for the summer ahead, Ponting predicted that captain Steven Smith would drop down to No.4 in the batting order, with Usman Khawaja at No.3 and the young West Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft slotting in alongside David Warner at the top of the order.

He spoke with some pride at his induction into the Hall of Fame, which also features the likes of fellow Tasmanian David Boon, Richie Benaud and Dennis Lillee.

“Something like this, once you are retired, gives you a chance to sit back and think about all the things you were able to do and wins you were able to have and things like that,” he said.

Serena to start 2016 at Hopman Cup in Perth (REUTERS) - World number one Serena Williams will again launch her season at the Hopman Cup in Australia, tournament organisers said yesterday.

Pele Football Club annual general meeting set for October 28 PELE Football Club will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on Thursday October28, 2015 at 18:30hrs at Congress Place, Sophia with all financial members expected to attend.

Currently the executives are John Yates (president), Allister Paris (1st vice-president), Alexander Best (2nd vice- president), Mark Archer (secretary), Eustace

It represents the supreme legislative authority of the club. Election of the members of the executive to conduct the business of the club for the next two years will be held at this meeting.

Cameron expects 2016 India tour of the Caribbean to go ahead WEST Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Dave Cameron is confident that a planned tour of the Caribbean by India next year will go ahead.

The WICB and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have failed to agree on much since the Windies abandoned a bi-lateral tour of India last year.

The West Indies, who were in India to play five One Day Internationals, a Twenty20 International and three Test matches, left the country midway after the fourth One Dayer in

Dave Cameron Dharamsala on October 17, owing to a raging pay dispute between the WICB and the Caribbean cricketers.

In terms of compensation, the BCCI had demanded US$42M, but the regional body had stated that the amount was out of the question.

The organisations have made several attempts to resolve the issue since. However, after a recent meeting in Mumbai, Cameron described talks in a two-hour meeting between the two as “cordial and fruitful”.

COURTS doles out sponsorship for golf, Fitness Expo COURTS Guyana Inc. yesterday continued its support for sports locally by handing over funding to the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) for its COURTS Invitational and GTM Guyana Health and Fitness EXPO, both set for this weekend.

The furniture company handed over $250 000 to the LGC for the hosting of its annual golf tournament and minutes later joined the supporting cast for the Health and Fitness EXPO with a $200 000 package.

LGC president Oncar Ramroop, during the presentation, commended COURTS for again sponsoring golf, adding “They have been involved in sports in all disciplines, and golf is no exception. It’s an opportune time as we have the Guyana Open coming up in a week’s time and it’s a prelude to that tournament.”

He indicated that golfers are expecting the tournament to get going from 12:30hrs at the LGC and Public Relations Officer Guy Griffith is inviting persons to witness the event which is free.

Marketing Manager Purnell Cummings reiterated the company’s continued support for sport, adding that “there are a number of female players, there are also a lot of younger players coming up in the golf arena and I hope that this tournament sees a few more of them come to the forefront.”

Meanwhile, COURTS also handed over $200 000 to the GTM Guyana Health and Fitness EXPO committee for the two-day extravaganza set for this weekend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Cummings reminded the gathering, “A fit nation is a good nation and a healthy nation is a strong nation and COURTS is partnering with the Fitness EXPO for this.”

EXPO coordinator and Genesis Fitness’ Noshavyah King said, “We will have lots of exhibitors with different things in terms of health and fitness; everything re health and fitness. So I’m encouraging the Guyanese public to come out and support.

It’s the first time being done in Guyana, it’s two full days and (there will be) something for everyone.”

The GTM Health and Fitness EXPO will be made up of exhibits from the health sector offering pharmaceuticals and various tests including blood pressure and eyes.

GUYANESE-born Canadian citizen Egerton Marcus won his 15th professional fight after earning a technical knockout (TKO) over American Tim `Sting’ Ray on October 22, 1999. The heavyweight bout was held at the Joe Louis Arena in the Motor City of Detroit, Michigan.

Both boxers were 34 years old at the time of the fight, which was stopped at one minute and four seconds of the first round. Born in Goed Fortuin on February 2, 1965, Marcus was the third of five children and moved to Canada in 1973. He was raised in Toronto and won a silver medal in the middleweight division at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

The Guyanese turned pro one year after the Olympics and reeled off 14 consecutive victories before suffering his first defeat. Marcus was already crowned NABF light heavyweight champion when he challenged German Henry Maske for the International

Egerton Marcus Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight title in February 1995.

In a rematch of the Olympic final, the German again prevailed by unanimous decision. Marcus, the cousin of Guyana’s first world champion the late Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis, would soon after move up to cruiserweight where he stayed briefly.

His next step was into the heavyweight division.

He challenged world-rater Donovan `Razor’ Ruddock in October 2001 for the Canadian heavyweight crown but lost by 10th round TKO.

St Aloysius and New Amsterdam face the axe in Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket

ALL SAINTS Primary and Rose Hall Estate Primary emerged victorious against St Aloysius and New Amsterdam in the New Amsterdam/Canje Districts of the WICB/GCB/Scotiabank Kiddy Progression One Cricket on Tuesday.

At the Berbice High School ground, St Aloysius won the toss and sent All Saints Primary in to take first strike.

All Saints made good use of the offer with Niquan Samuels and Richard Simon featuring in a second-wicket partnership of 102 runs to help their team amass 219-5.

Samuels scored a superb 86 which included nine fours and four sixes while Simon supported with 39. Dominika Crandon was the pick of the bowlers for St Aloysius with 2-11.

In reply, St Aloysius managed only 84-6 from their allotted 14 overs. Lindon Simon top-scored with an unbeaten 24, as Samuels returned to impress with the ball and claimed 3-0.

Over at the All Saints ground, New Amsterdam posted 147-3, batting first against Rose Hall Estate. Xavier Henry led the way with an unbeaten 54 and Zimiri Phillips chipped in with 24, while Vivek Cyril, Sarvesh Mohabir and Alianna Lallbeharry took one wicket each for the opposition.

In response, Rose Hall Estate rallied to 149-4. Avishar Persaud made a useful contribution of 18 but it was Kenroy Giles’ unbeaten 35 that helped guide his team to victory.

West Indies seek Sir Garry’s inspiration as second Test starts today WEST Indies will look to Sir Garfield Sobers for inspiration as they aim for a series-saving victory against Sri Lanka in the second Test starting in Colombo today.

Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder ever to have played the game, is in Colombo to watch the second and final Test at the P Sara Oval.

Sri Lanka have not been a happy hunting ground for West Indies since they played their first official Test on the island in 1993.

The West Indies are yet to win a Test in Sri Lanka in 10 attempts, and suffered an innings defeat in the first Test in Galle last week, where Rangana Herath starred with a match-haul of ten wickets.

Now, West Indies are only above Bangladesh in the ICC Test rankings, while Sri Lanka are one rung above them in seventh place.

Sri Lanka are going through a rebuilding phase after the recent retirements of

collapses to crash for 251 in their first innings and then 227 in the second innings after following-on.

While West Indies are expected to be unchanged, captain Jason Holder, acknowledged that his batsmen need to show more application.

“At this present time, we need to knock it down, we need to take it slower and slow down the game as much as possible -- simplify it as much as possible, and make it easy for us,” said Holder.

Tour of Guyana five-stage cycle race launched

THE ninth annual Tour of Guyana Five-Stage Cycle Road Race was launched yesterday at the Ministry of Tourism and according to reports several international cyclists have indicated their interest to participate.

Formerly known as the `Ride for Life Five-Stage’, the race has been rebranded `The Tour of Guyana FiveStage Race’, which wheels off on October 29 and concludes on November 1.

The event is being organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC), Ministry of Education – Department of Culture, Youth and Sport and has received sponsorship from the Ministry of Tourism - being a sports tourism event - as well as beverage giant Banks DIH Limited.

The first stage will commence outside the Corriverton Police Station, Corentyne Berbice at 07:30hrs and conclude at Main and Alexander Streets in New Amsterdam.

On the same day, the second stage will start at 14:00hrs from the Rosignol Ferry Stelling and end at Carifesta Avenue.

The following day, the third stage will begin at 09:00hrs outside the Wales

Buxton sink GDF 2-1 in STAG Elite clash

In the first match, Fruta Conquerors squared off

against Monedderlust and won 1-0 with Jermaine Junor scoring the lone goal.

The match that followed saw the home team GDF suffer a 1-2 defeat at the hands of the Buxtonians. Buxton drew first blood when Delon Wright

scored in the 23rd minute and they maintained that lead until the half.

When play resumed, Buxton stuck another one in, four minutes in the second, to leave the army side in disbelief, However, the army pulled one back in

the 68th minute, compliments of Delon Fraser but it was not enough to do the job.

Meanwhile, last night the action continued again at the GDF ground with Slingerz FC and Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in the

curtain-raiser. This was the second meeting between the two sides, the first of which ended in a nil-all draw.

Following that, Pele were scheduled to face off against Alpha United in the feature. When the two sides met on September

23, ninety minutes of play could not separate them as the match ended 2-2.
