Forgetting differences is message of Holi –President

REMEMBERING Dr Cheddi Jagan

I also wish to appeal to the residents of all communities - urban and rural, coastal and interior, - to take pride in keeping your surroundings clean and beautiful. Community Development Councils, Community Policing Groups and other Community organisations and civic bodies can play a crucial role in ensuring proper systems of garbage disposal and maintenance of clean parapets and clean drains and trenches. Such efforts will in the first place benefit you, your children and those around you. Small conscious action when duplicated in each individual will bring results of very great proportions. World Environment Day June 5, 1994

… expresses hope for unity in National Assembly AN atmosphere of joy and jubilation filled the grounds of the Indian Cultural Centre in Bel Air when President Donald Ramotar and First Lady Deolatchmee Ramotar joined Guyanese in Phagwah celebrations yesterday. Holi or Phagwah is the Hindu celebration of the festival of spring with a mix of water and colourful powders. Apart from spring, there are a few other events celebrated at this time, all signifying the triumph of good over evil. President Ramotar focused on the recognition of unity being built through cultural and ethnic diversity in Guyana. He indicated that the festival is no longer an Indian celebration, but a Guyanese one which is one of the uniqueness of the blend of cultures. “Holi brings us together. The powder, the abeer remove distinction and remind us that we all come from the human race and that we are all one people,” he stressed. “We hope that this is the spring for Guyanese society…. in this regard I want to hope we will have unity in the National Assembly…and that we will pass the Anti Money Laundering bill and save our people from a lot of trouble,” the president stated. Acting Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Tirath Singh, described the festival as

President Donald Ramotar exchange Holi colours with Acting High Commissioner of India to Guyana Tirath Singh the culmination of festivities which began with the planting of Holi celebrated with bonfires and colour, all focusing on the victory of good over evil. “It is an ancient festival in India which finds its mention in many scriptures,” he said. Over the years, he noted, the legend has changed, from the story of Prahalad and today, “Holi is celebrated all over India to celebrate the harvest festival and several rituals are performed by married women, in particular, for happiness of their families and also the worshipping of the full moon.” He particularly stressed the brotherhood during this time when people share their joys and successes with friends and family

by applying colourful abeer on each other. Singh noted this is especially so in a country where there is cultural diversity. Leader of the Opposition David Granger welcomed the festival as an auspicious occasion which brings Guyanese from four continents together, without boundaries and barriers. He expressed the hope that Holi brings “us together, not only today, but for the rest of the year, even in the National Assembly.” The festival’s significance leads back to the ancient story of King Hiranyakashipu and his son Prahalad. The king wanted everyone to worship him, even his son, but the young man defied him and his father tried several times to kill him, but

failed. He even ordered his son to sit on the lap of his demonic sister Holika on a pyre, but again good triumphed over evil and Holika was burnt to ashes as Prahalad came out unharmed, hence, the significance of the burning of the Holika on the eve of Holi. Yesterday’s programme comprised cultural performances, including dances and songs. The event was also attended by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green, Ministers of Government, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Private Sector, Members of Parliament, the Hindu Community and Indian Nationals living in Guyana. Family of six narrowly escape serious injury …struck by another vehicle at Houston By Vanessa Narine A FAMILY of six narrowly escaped serious injury after their vehicle, PJJ 3397, was thrown from its lane onto the other, last evening around 19:30hrs at Houston, in the vicinity of the Houston Secondary School – making it the second accident in one day at the exact location. Driver of the vehicle, Trideo Ramroop, told the Guyana Chronicle that his wife and four children were in the car on the way to their home at Eccles after visiting in Charlestown. He noted that he felt an impact at the back of his car and before he knew it, his vehicle was flung over the other side of the road and sent spinning before coming to a halt. The driver of the other vehicle, PRR 9731, a Nissan Cube, was visibly under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on site. He was overhead on his cell phone reporting that his accident occurred on “Cemetery Road” and soon after attempted to escape police custody, but was restrained by an officer on site after he fell in his attempt to get out of the police vehicle. When asked for a comment, the driver, whose name was not confirmed up to press time, said, only, that the others involved in the accident can say what they want to. He and his girlfriend were the only occupants in his car. The Ramroop children, who were complaining of aches about the body, and Mrs. Ramroop were rushed to the Woodlands Hospital and have since been reported to be doing well. Mr. Ramroop did not accompany them to the hospital, rather, he stayed on site until his vehicle was towed before heading to the police station.

POLICE ASSAULTED There was one other arrest last night of a young Afro-Guyanese man, whose name was not disclosed. The individual, a friend of the driver of the Nissan Cube, attempted to get Mr. Ramroop to agree to a settlement. After Ramroop told him that the other driver was not in a position to negotiate a settlement, the individual moved to

The driver of the Nissan Cube who was arrested last night and visibly under the influence of alcohol reason with the police officer, guarding his friend, who was sitting in the back of the police van. Failure to get any satisfaction resulted in him using abusive language directed to the police officer. He subsequently tried to run, but was chased by two officers and arrested. Then he and his friend, the driver of the Nissan Cube, were handcuffed together before being taken to the police station. Many of his supporters

were vehemently protesting his arrest, but an equally vociferous number of onlookers were in support of the police. Commander of A Division, George Vyfhuis, when asked by the media, discounted reports that a gun was involved in the altercation. Reports up to 19:30hrs suggested that the accident was the eighth reported for the day, many involving drivers who were under the influence of alcohol. The Commander also appealed for drivers to heed the traffic laws and not drink and drive. He said, “It is a concern. I was told that this is the third accident, but I’m not too sure if it’s eight. “We’ve had a fatal in one this afternoon and now this one completely blocked the main carriage way, which we have serious concern about, because we cannot allow vehicles to come through this particular corridor and stall in such a place because of security concerns. “We had to come in and deal with this, but we’re appealing to the drivers to please do not drink and drive. We cannot afford that now. “Do not drink and drive. Designate a driver and you will get to where you are going safely. Do not speed. Do not try to overtake another vehicle when you don’t have the opportunity to do that. “I think it is very dangerous and we are risking our lives and getting rid of innocent people’s lives very easily.” Many road users were yesterday participating in the Phagwah festivities, which religious organisations have been stressing is a holiday where non-consumption of alcohol should be the order of the day.

U.S., EU impose Car bombs kill at least eight at sanctions after Libya army academy in Benghazi Crimea applies to join Russia (Reuters) - THE United States and the European Union imposed sanctions including asset freezes and travel bans on a small group of officials from Russia and Ukraine after Crimea applied to join Russia on Monday following a weekend referendum. Crimea’s leaders declared a Soviet-style 97-percent result in favor of seceding from Ukraine in a vote condemned as illegal by Kiev and the West. The Crimean parliament formally proposed that Russia “admit the Republic of Crimea as a new subject with the status of a republic”. Russian President Vladimir Putin will address a special joint session of the Russian parliament on the issue on Tuesday, aides said. The move would dismember Ukraine against its will, escalating the most serious East-West crisis since the end of the Cold War. Russian forces took control of Crimea in late February following the toppling of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich after deadly clashes between riot police and protestors trying to overturn his decision to spurn a trade and cooperation deal with the EU and seek closer ties with Russia. U.S. President Barack Obama imposed sanctions on 11 Russians and Ukrainians blamed for the military seizure, including Yanukovich, and Vladislav Surkov and Sergei Glazyev, two aides to Putin. Putin himself, suspected in the West of trying to resurrect as much as possible of the former Soviet Union under Russian leadership, was not on the blacklist. Amid fears that Russia might move into eastern Ukraine, Obama warned Moscow at a White House press briefing that what he called further provocations would only increase Russia’s isolation and exact a greater toll on its economy. “If Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, we stand ready to impose further sanctions,” he said. A senior U.S. official said Obama’s order cleared the way to sanction people associated with the arms industry and targets “the personal wealth of cronies” of the Russian leadership. In Brussels, the EU’s 28 foreign ministers agreed to subject 21 Russian and Ukrainian officials to visa restrictions and asset freezes for their roles in the events. The EU did not immediately publish the names. Washington and Brussels said more measures could follow in the coming days if Russia does not back down and formally annexes Crimea. A senior Obama administration official said there was “concrete evidence” that some ballots in the Crimea referendum arrived in some Crimean cities pre-marked. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who was named on the White House sanctions list, suggested that the measures would not affect those without assets abroad. Obama earlier said Russian forces must end “incursions” into its ex-Soviet neighbor, while Putin renewed his accusation that the new leadership in Kiev, brought to power by an uprising that toppled his elected Ukrainian ally last month, were failing to protect Russian-speakers from violent Ukrainian nationalists. Moscow responded to Western pressure for an international “contact group” to mediate in the crisis by proposing a “support group” of states. This would push for recognition of the Crimean referendum and urge a new constitution for rump Ukraine that would require it to uphold political and military neutrality.

(Reuters) - A POWERFUL car bomb attack targeted a military academy in Libya’s eastern of city of Benghazi on Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding more than a dozen, hospital and security officials said. Instability in the eastern city is part of the struggle a weak central government faces in controlling armed groups, militias and brigades of former rebels who once battled Muammar Gaddafi and now refuse to disarm. A first bomb exploded at the front gate of the academy as soldiers were leaving a graduation ceremony, security officials said. Several cars parked outside exploded. One or two other bombs exploded around the same time, wounding at least 13, a security official said. In a separate explosion hours later in Benghazi, one person was killed when another car bomb went off near the state oil firm Brega Petroleum Marketing Co, which sells fuel products inside Libya, a security source said. No group claimed responsibility for the bombings in Benghazi, where Libyan armed forces have been battling militants from hardline Islamist groups such as Ansar al Sharia, listed as a foreign terrorist organization by Washington. The government called the academy bombing a “terrorist act” and declared three days of mourning, according to a statement. Most countries have closed their consulates in Benghazi and some foreign airlines have stopped flying there since the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed in an Islamist militant attack in September 2012. Unknown gunmen killed a French citizen earlier this month, while police found seven Egyptian Christians shot dead execution-style on a beach outside Benghazi, home to several oil firms. No one has claimed responsibility for that killing. An American schoolteacher was also killed by gunmen in December. Western diplomats are concerned the violence in Benghazi will spill over to the capital, Tripoli.

Co-pilot spoke last words heard from missing Malaysian plane (Reuters) - THE co-pilot of a missing Malaysian jetliner spoke the last words heard from the cockpit, the airline’s chief executive said on Monday, as investigators consider suicide by the captain or first officer as one possible explanation for the disappearance. No trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been found since it vanished on March 8 with 239 people aboard. Investigators are increasingly convinced it was diverted perhaps thousands of miles off course by someone with deep knowledge of the Boeing 777-200ER and commercial navigation. A search unprecedented in its scale is now under way for the plane, covering a area stretching from the shores of the Caspian Sea in the north to deep in the southern Indian Ocean. Airline chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya also told a news conference that it was unclear exactly when one of the plane’s automatic tracking systems had been disabled, appearing to contradict the weekend comments of government ministers. Suspicions of hijacking or sabotage had hardened further when officials said on Sunday that the last radio message from the plane - an informal “all right, good night” - was spoken after the system, known as “ACARS”, was shut down. “Initial investigations indicate it was the co-pilot who basically spoke the last time it was recorded on tape,” Ahmad Jauhari said on Monday, when asked who it was believed had spoken those words. That was a sign-off to air traffic controllers at 1.19 a.m., as the Beijing-bound plane left Malaysian airspace. The last transmission from the ACARS system - a maintenance computer that relays data on the plane’s status - had been received at 1.07 a.m., as the plane crossed Malaysia’s northeast coast and headed out over the Gulf of Thailand. “We don’t know when the ACARS was switched off after that,” Ahmad Jauhari said. “It was supposed to transmit 30 minutes from there, but that transmission did not come through.” Police and a multi-national investigation team may never know for sure what happened in the cockpit unless they find the plane, and that in itself is a daunting challenge. Satellite data suggests it could be anywhere in either of two vast corridors that arc through much of Asia: one stretching north from Laos to the Caspian, the other south from west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra into the southern Indian Ocean west of Australia. Aviation officials in Pakistan, India, and Central Asian countries Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan - as well as Taliban militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan - said they knew nothing about the whereabouts of the plane. “The idea that the plane flew through Indian airspace for several hours without anyone noticing is bizarre,” a defense ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban in Afghanistan, who are seeking to oust foreign troops and set up an Islamic state, said the missing plane had nothing to do with them. “It happened outside Afghanistan and you can see that even countries with very advanced equipment and facilities cannot figure out where it went,” he said. “So we also do not have any information as it is an external issue.

Former FIU director designate: T&T at risk of being blacklisted

(Trinidad Guardian) If the Government fails to begin prosecuting people under the money laundering laws, T&T runs the risk of being blacklisted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The warning was issued by former director designate of Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) David West who pleaded with parliamentarians to work together to ensure the legislation is enforced. He was speaking at the launch of the first local Chapter of Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (Gopac) at Soongs Great Wall Restaurant in San Fernando on Saturday. West

said the fourth round of FATF evaluation was in 2015 and the country was not ready because there had been no prosecutions and no convictions for money laundering. In an interview afterwards, West explained that if T&T was not compliant in enough of the standards or recommendations of the FATF it would go on the International Co-operation Review Group (ICRG) list. If that happens, he said T&T would be regularly evaluated and monitored. “We don’t have any convictions. We don’t have any prosecutions on money laundering and that is what they are looking at now. “Previously, we were get-

ting all the legislation in place and we have legislation but now it’s time to get the investigations and prosecutions going. “It is highly likely that we could be back on on the ICRG list and if nothing happen in the near future we could be blacklisted.” He said the FATF would issue a bulletin saying T&T had failed to comply with certain standards and advise countries not to do business here. “It hits the man on the street,” he added. “We don’t want a situation to happen like in Guyana, where the Caribbean FATF based in Trinidad has warned countries not to do business with that country. “In Trinidad this can easily happen because the op-

4-pronged plan to overthrow Govt (Trinidad Express) The date and timing for the 1990 coup attempt, which took place on July 27, were “carefully chosen” by the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen which was at the time “encouraged” by anti-government sentiment coming off the union platforms, Sir David Simmons QC stated in the report into the events of 1990. The document can be read online on the Parliament website. The 1,324-page report of the Commission of Enquiry into the 1990 attempted coup was presented on Thursday to President Anthony Carmona by Simmons, who served as chairman to the Commission. The report was laid as a Paper in the House of Representatives by the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar the following day. The Prime Minister then sought and obtained leave of the House to have the report printed as a House Paper. The Commission of Enquiry began its task on January 24, 2011. In Section 2 of the report which deals with “The Nature, Extent and Impact of The Attempted Coup”, the Commission states: “In this Part, we make findings or draw conclusions from the evidence adduced before us. Much of the evidence was not disputed. We have chosen to let the evidence of various witnesses speak for itself. However, the matters discussed in this Part represent our interpretation and analysis of problematic parts of the evidence. The following are our findings and/or conclusions” and makes the following observations: The date and timing for the attempted coup were carefully chosen. As members of the Summit of People’s Organisations (SOPO), the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen (JAM) were aware that SOPO were planning an informal referendum for July 27. They were also aware that the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) had written to the Prime Minister giving him until July 27 to disband the structural adjustment programme and the austerity measures or else they would escalate their protests on July 31. Imam Abu Bakr, encouraged by the rhetoric emanating from the public platforms of SOPO, conspired with Bilaal Abdullah and others to attempt a coup d’état on July 27, 1990.

position may not support the legislation and we may end up in a situation like Guyana. I am imploring parliamentarians on both sides to be sensible when dealing with this legislation.” He recalled that T&T was almost blacklisted in 2011, but in 2012 it came off the list and at the last evaluation T&T was

in compliance with 28 of 40 recommendations. Between 2010 and 2013, according to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) report, there had been over a billion dollars in suspicious transactions, but no prosecution, conviction or debate. Clearly, he said the FIU was not working. “What are these par-

liamentarians doing? They are sleeping on the job and we as a people realise that and we have to do something about it. “I fully support the initiative of Gopac and we need more people to come on board.” West stressed that an effective anti-money laundering regime is the only way to reduce incidence of corruption among public officials.

One killed, 10 injured in Houston crash

… persons who assisted them said ‘they reeked of alcohol’ By Ravin Singh

EDITORIAL

Holi and Easter, and new beginnings WE celebrated Holi yesterday. We showered each other with coloured powder and drenched each other with water made red with abir. And this was not the preserve of only our Hindu brothers and sisters. Many Guyanese of other religious persuasions joined in this spring phenomenon, a multi-cultural melding that testified to the willingness of this nation of multiple ethnicities to share with each other, evidence of the oneness that is a part of the national motto. And it is interesting that Holi is celebrated in the middle of the Lenten Season, that period of austerity that is about the most important happening in the Christian calendar, a period of introspection that ends with the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. Both Holi and Easter are spring festivals. They indicate new beginnings, new life. The season calls for forgiveness and for accommodating each other, for wiping the slate clean and for working with the common good in mind, for putting aside selfish agendas and for experiencing the satisfaction that comes with doing something for others. We in Guyana are indeed blessed with a plethora of natural resources and a people whose resilience has been tested on more than one occasion and who always ride the crest, overcoming every adversity. And there were many. We would do well to think on the true meaning of Holi and Easter. We need to be thankful for the opportunities before us, and to grasp them with both hands, and to see them through in a spirit of togetherness. To do otherwise would be tragic indeed.

TEN persons were injured and one, Wazim Khan, was killed yesterday after their vehicle, a Ford 150, GRR 4883, toppled three times at Houston, on the East Bank Highway. Khan died at Balwant Singh Hospital. The driver, Brandon Rahaman, at the accident site, told

the Guyana Chronicle that the group was headed to Inspire’s Phagwah activity at the Guyana National Stadium, after leaving friends in Station Street, Kitty. He said he and two others were in the passenger seat inside the vehicle, while others were seated in the open tray. The three of them were the worst injured of the group and were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Public spirited citizens who assisted in moving those injured into vehicles for transportation reported to the media that the individuals reeked of alcohol. On site, two coolers and several bottles of ‘Stag’ beer were crushed and littered the roadways. Rahaman, speaking to this newspaper, said, “Someone say mash when we come round the turn, I can’t say what happen

after.” However, at the hospital, he said someone at the back threw powder and before the window could be rolled up, his vision was blurred, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The others involved in the accident are: Tamika Bowen, Jugray Singh, 21, Gabriel Hussain, 17, Anthony Singh, 21, Sharay Bushby, 16, Fairy Ramdat, 19, Renatta Raghubir,19, Avinash Lazarus,15 and Imran Khan, 21.

Old Kai: Chronicles of Guyana

S.O.S.-- OPPOSITION LEADERSHIP IS IN CRISIS AND IS SINKING VERY FAST OLD Kai has been enthralled at the recent visits by the APNU leadership into areas known to be strongholds of the ruling People’s Progressive Party. Last week they were in Port Mourant and this week we are informed they visited Lusignan and Mon Repos, and we are told that the reason for these visits is to spread their propaganda on Local Government elections and the Anti-Money Laundering bill. I am wondering if during these visits, APNU also related to these villagers that it was they and the AFC who teamed up to cut over $500M in funding for the hosting of Local Government Elections in the 2013 budget. The PPP/C Government placed the funding in the budget; why if the Opposition were really serious about hosting these elections did they use their combined majority of one in the National Assembly to deny GECOM the ability to complete its preparation. What this does is to further reinforce to Guyanese that the Opposition leadership cannot be trusted, especially when they go about in a bare-faced fashion to mislead citizens, unconcerned if they are exposed. This is indeed a strong signal that there is a leadership crisis within the Opposition camp. Old Kai would not have been surprised had Granger warned these residents during his visits that if they did not listen to APNU, they will feel the consequences as he did to State media personnel a few days ago. Let’s not get carried away however, because the reality is that these visits were designed to distract from the increasing pressure APNU, and by extension AFC, has found itself in. Mr. Granger’s lack of effective leadership ability, other than commanding people

to do his bidding or face his wrath, does not belong in a democratic society. He apparently feels he is still living in the 1970’s and 80’s, under the dictatorship of which he was an integral member. These visits suddenly commenced the moment the members of the Commission of Inquiry into the death of Dr. Walter Rodney were announced. All this erratic behavior of the APNU and Mr. Granger specifically coincided with this event. Why? Well, Old Kai is wondering if the Opposition Leader will go before the Commission and give his testimony as it will be very crucial. You see, most Guyanese are aware that Granger was close to the Dictator Forbes Burnham and in fact was directly planted in the military to politically indoctrinate and de-professionalize this arm of the state. However, what many are not aware of is that Granger was made a Commander of the GDF just a few months prior to the assassination of Dr. Rodney. We all know that it was a GDF sergeant who reportedly gave Walter Rodney a ‘walkie-talkie’, as it was known then, which, unknown to the late political leader of the WPA, contained an explosive that went off. A great many people were astonished at the abrasive reaction by the APNU leadership after the Commission of Inquiry was announced, as prior to this, they have always been lukewarm about such a Commission. But to viciously attack even the individuals who are the Commissioners has raised several eyebrows, for no sooner had the CoI materialized, than they found all manner of excuses not to participate in the proceedings.

Why are they so scared of the CoI? Does Mr. Granger have something to hide or are they anticipating some explosive revelations which may have serious repercussions? Whatever it is, this nation finally deserves some closure on Dr. Walter Rodney’s death. But then again, maybe these two events could be linked. This sudden desperation by the APNU to hold Local Government Elections at any and all cost, and an all-out attack on the Rodney CoI could be related. It appears APNU wants to have this election before Guyanese begin to testify before the Commission as those damning revelations may serve to see Mr. Granger continuing to lose public support as indicated by a recent independent opinion poll. In this desperation, they even used their Parliamentary majority over the PPP/C to pass a bill which clashes with our Constitution and for which President Donald Ramotar cannot sign into law. This has quite rightly been sent back to the National Assembly for the requisite correction. But don’t expect the APNU to talk about this on their misinformation campaign in villages across Guyana. Instead, they need to prop up David Granger as much as possible and give him his medication to guard against anxiety attack which usually occurs the moment he hears or reads about the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry. Hesitancy to give evidence, threatening public servants, holding the business community hostage, denying citizens, including your own support base, infrastructure programmes by cutting the budget, threatening to not recognize High Court rulings, all add up to the drop in public support recorded which translates to failed leadership.

Shadehouse project launched By Clifford Stanley THE main aim of organisers of a national Shadehouse Vegetable Production Project is to organise hydroponic and organic vegetable farmers into geographic clusters. The US$1.35M project is by the Inter- American Development Bank/Japanese Trust Fund and is being implemented by Partners of the Americas (POA Guyana Chapter) and Caribbean Self Reliance International (CASRI). To be held in all the administrative regions, the project will last for four years aimed at improving the economic welfare of vulnerable and disadvantaged men, women and youth, and increasing community economic growth. Coordinator Mr. Kelvin Craig of POA recently disclosed. He said, “Clusters raise the profitability and sustainability of groups of small-to medium-sized farmers beyond levels that individual farmers can achieve operating on their own.” Mr. Rowland Fletcher, country representative of CASRI, said , “We in CASRI consider the evolution of strong and capable geographic clusters as the backbone of a vibrant and influential network of producers. Herein lies the blueprint for independent organisational capacity, sustainable growth and eventual success.” The heads of the implementing agencies made these comments during the official launch of the programme at the St. Stanislaus College Farm in Sophia last week. The programme was officially launched with opening

remarks by Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy. The general objective is to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for low-income households in rural and coastal communities in Guyana, by engaging small scale producers in hydroponic and natural/organic cultivation of vegetables for domestic and export markets. Craig disclosed that training in production, provision of market access support for both local and external markets, and networking/association building or cluster development are the three components. He said that the production component will comprise hands-on training in areas including compost production, natural pesticide production, planting in containers, the use of soilless media, the use of plant nutrients and care and management of the organic vegetables garden. This component will also include development of hydroponic shade-houses, natural/ organic farms and home-based gardens in areas even where yard space is limited. The marketing component will include a market survey for hydroponic and natural/ organic vegetables and culinary herbs and linkages of producers with buyers such as local supermarkets and hotels. Craig said that it was envisaged that the linking of buyers with farmers would be made easier with the formation of clusters of producers. He said that a consultant has been employed to carry out the formation of such clusters.

Youth Coalition on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights launched - public education campaign coming soon By Michel Outridge SEVERAL youths from a number of youth-based organisations met last Friday at the President Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG) building to launch the first Youth Coalition on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Guyana. The launch and meeting was a follow-up to the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) hosted Youth Forum on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) which was held on June 22, 2013 at School of the Nations and a subsequent meeting to discuss the formation of the coalition. The launch was attended by young people from the United Nations Population Fund – Youth Advisory Group, One World Youth Project, Come Alive Network Inc., Global Youth Movement – Guyana, Caribbean Youth Environment Network

– Guyana branch, the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association and Artiste In Direct Support. Ms. Patrice La fleur, Assistant Representative for UNFPA in Guyana, in brief remarks to the coalition gave her agency’s support to the coalition and reminded those present of their importance in national development, especially in reducing adolescent pregnancy, gender-based violence, and ensuring equal opportunities for girls and women. She congratulated the group and pointed out that there is important work to be done to achieve the unfinished agenda of the ICPD which will observe its 20th anniversary at the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2014. Ms. La Fleur also urged the organisations to continue the work in their communities to empower young women especially with information on sexual and reproductive health and comprehensive sexuality education so as to prevent and reduce adolescent pregnancy. She also called on youth or-

ganisations to mainstream sexual and reproductive health into their programmes. The coalition’s aim is to provide young people with sexual and reproductive health information by first educating young people on their rights to basic health services and targeting the young people reached by the organisations that are members of the coalition. EDUCATION CAMPAIGN A public education campaign will begin shortly under the theme “Youth Have Rights”, which will focus on basic human rights such as the rights to education, health, protection, access to sexual and reproductive health information and services and commodities. In the coming months the coalition members will undergo several capacity-building sessions so organisations can begin to mainstream sexual and reproductive health and rights into their work programme. Already some organisations are conducting outreaches, training and distribution of reproductive health commodities. The coalition will support these activities so that they become more broadbased to reach underserved and vulnerable communities.

2014 Miss Guyana Universe to receive $2M cash - Lumumba By Alex Wayne FRANCHISE holder of Miss Guyana Universe, Odinga Lumumba, on Saturday evening said that this year’s winner of the pageant will receive a cash prize of $2 million. Lumumba was speaking at an appreciation dinner hosted by reigning queen Katherina Roshana at the New Thriving Event Centre, Camp Street, Georgetown. Roshana was acknowledged for her outstanding performance

at the Miss Universe Pageant in Malaysia last year by officials, family and friends. Lumumba congratulated Roshana for her excellent performance at the pageant. He thanked some of the sponsors who catapulted Roshana to the Miss Universe Pageant, namely New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation (Limacol) and the Government of Guyana. Roshana thanked President Donald Ramotar for his words of wisdom and for making her trip to Russia possible. Additionally, she thanked her

parents and Lumumba for their continued support. She spoke about her passion for autistic children and hopes to start her own charity for disabled children soon. Roshan Khan, Roshana’s father, said his daughter prevailed despite all the disadvantages on the part of Guyana as compared to other countries that support their contestant for the pageant. At the India Worldwide Pageant in 2013 in Malaysia, she won the Miss Beautiful Skin title.

New team seeking to ‘build winning formula’

…for Miss Guyana World Pageant delegates By Alex Wayne SENTIMENTS have been shared by stakeholders, for several years, that not enough time is allocated to the training of contestants for local pageants. However, with overseas-based Guyanese, Natasha Martindale as its new franchise holder and a reconstructed committee, more opportunities are being made available for the Miss World Guyana Pageant, giving Guyana’s future representatives a better chance to shine. The new team consists of professionals who “all have the same goal of seeing Guyana bring home the Miss World Crown” says new Pageant Director Michelle Cole. The award winning designer, who has served on several major pageant committees over the years, stated that the restructured committee will now seek to “build a winning formula” for future delegates. Cole explained that the entire experience for the Miss World Guyana delegates has been improved to include several resources that were not before available for the girls. These resources are aimed at providing the same atmosphere that overseas pageants provide for their delegates in order to raise the standard of training and performance for Guyanese delegates. “We have launched an online resource portal, somewhat like an online beauty school, for our finalists where they are tasked with reading materials, learning videos and guidance from professionals in the field. We currently provide resources for fitness, yoga, personality development, make-up application and portrait posing and there is much more to come,” Cole said. She added that whether or not the delegate wins, simply being a finalist in the local pageant will refine and drastically improve the image of each young woman and provide her with immeasurable developmental skills. PREPARATION TIME Meanwhile, much impor-

tance has been placed on allowing the delegates enough time to prepare for the pageant. “This is the first time in recent history that we have selected the finalists three months before the date of the coronation and our main reason is that we believe that one of the things that was lacking for Guyana was the preparation time that these young ladies have before they are sent to represent. I believe with the three months that we have to work with them is preparing them for an excellent

MICHELLE COLE performance and the necessary skill-set that is needed to win and serve as Miss World.” Cole touched on the important role that pageantry plays in a delegate’s life, stating that the opportunities provided are priceless. “Any opportunity that involves helping the less fortunate, becoming a role model for young women or representing a region, community or a country is priceless. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for any young woman looking to enter the world as a career oriented professional and future leader.” As such, the Miss World Guyana Pageant has been organised in a way which will encourage achievement by helping to nurture and build the scholastic and creative development as well

as the community involvement capabilities of young Guyanese women, Cole said. In a world where image is everything, the pageant director said that helping to understand the importance of image will also be a vital task for the delegates. “Image is the number one driving force in first impressions and therefore very important in every beauty pageant. You have to sell the package- which is you, the contestant- you are the brand and this makes selling your image even more important to your success,” Cole said. She added that delegates should embrace their background and use that as a prop for their image as she believes that the more purposeful the prop, the richer and more creative the image. MAY 26 The 2014 Miss World Guyana Pageant is scheduled to be held on May 26 and 10 delegates will compete for the chance to represent Guyana at the international competition. To these delegates, Cole advises that they “focus, work hard, have fun and be yourself.” Cole has been instrumental in the coordination of pageants such as Miss Guyana Talented Teen, Miss World Guyana and Miss Guyana Universe over the years and is therefore no stranger to the requirements for a successful pageant. DESIGNER OF THE YEAR AWARD Apart from being pageant director, Michelle Cole wears many other hats, including that of a mother and renowned fashion designer. Asked how she manages all these responsibilities, she said that multi-tasking has become a part of her everyday life, but admits that she is only human. “Some days it’s challenging but my kids are an excellent motivation for me, one look at the little faces and I remember that I have to do this for them and besides I operate

Mon Repos father of two hangs self in bedroom while children watch By Leroy Smith A FATHER of two, whose only name was given as Vicky, took his own life by hanging himself in his room on Friday evening, even as his two sons, aged eight and nine, looked on. Reputedly in his early 30s, the man, who is also known in the Mon Repos community as “Camera Fowl”, reportedly committed the act after finding his wife in the company of another male companion in another village. The man had allegedly been receiving reports of his wife’s unfaithfulness from several

persons over several years, and he reportedly obtained firsthand knowledge yesterday in Good Hope. An argument subsequently ensued at his home, and he promised the woman that he would take his own life, but that had apparently not fazed her. They had been together for almost 10 years, and she had mothered his two children. Speaking with this publication yesterday afternoon at their home, the dead man’s aunt explained that she was at home next door when one of the children called her to say “come see what happen to daddy”. The woman said she enquired what the problem was,

and the children informed her that the man had hanged himself; she said she asked if he were dead or alive, and when she rushed upstairs, the man was motionless over the bed in his room. The Guyana Chronicle visited the home yesterday to find the man’s aunt sitting with his two children under a tent erected to hold a wake. Persons in the area, expressing shock and grief at the man’s passing, declared that he had worked very hard to maintain his two children, and would even ensure that his wife receive all the support she needed, financially and otherwise.

well under pressure and I love what I do.” Overcoming her challenges and continually striving to uphold all her responsibilities has certainly paid off. Cole was recently awarded the Designer of the Year Award at the Young Gifted and Black Award

Ceremony in New York. She stated that it is a privilege to be recognised for her efforts, especially for something she loves doing. She attributes her success largely to her mother, whom she credits with playing an integral role in nurturing her talent by providing her

with a sewing machine at the tender age of 10. “I am a fashion designer not by choice but because of a talent that I was born and blessed with, I thank God every day for the opportunity to have a job that I love. I believe that is the number one key to success!”

Carnegie School of Home Economics: producing excellence for the hospitality industry By Ravin Singh GUYANA’S only culinary school, the renowned Carnegie School of Home Economics, was founded in 1933 by the Scotsman Andrew Carnegie through the Trade Centres for Women of New York. A grant was donated by the Carnegie Trustees and an additional grant from the UK. Initially, the objective of its establishment was to relieve unemployment among women, thus it was formally known as the Carnegie Trade School. Entrusted with the task of establishing the school, with the undertaking that the government would assume full responsibility if the venture succeeded, its first prin-

the Carnegie School of Home Economics (C.S.H.E.), and the curriculum was aimed at giving every girl an opportunity to learn the skills and attitudes essential to make a good family and community life. In the 1960s, the school be-

Principal of Carnegie School of Home Economics, Mrs. Penelope Harris

Founder of the School, Andrew Carnegie cipal, Ms. Briant, soon developed a trading section, which produced custom made ladies garments and uniforms for government messengers. Large scale catering was undertaken only by request. The trading aspect of the school was discontinued in 1958. Thereafter, the school was renamed

gan training Home Economics teachers, and in 1971, a separate catering section was established to give more specialised training in food preparation, and service. Consequently, the public was offered economical and attractive meals of high standard in a pleasing atmosphere. To enhance the catering programme, financial and technical assistance was given by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges and the International Development Agency to enhance the catering programme. In the year 2000, the cosmetology programme and the garment construction programmes were developed with the

help of the Social Impact Amelioration Project. Staff at this institution presently comprises the principal, the vice principal, an academic staff of fourteen instructors, and a support staff of twelve. Holding the post of principal since 2007 is Mrs. Penelope Harris. According to Mrs. Harris, the school does not limit its scope of education offered to students, and provides certification on the level of diplomas and certificates that are accredited by the Ministry of Education’s Accreditation Council. Currently, Carnegie offers full-time programmes in Catering and Hospitality, Commercial Food Preparation, Visual Arts, General Cosmetology, Garment Construction and Interior Decoration. The course durations vary between one and two years. Full-time students are exposed to work attachments in the hospitality industry - at hotels, restaurants, fast food operations, and other catering establishments. Students are also placed in hospitals, banks, salons and garment production enterprises to provide them with practical experience in their area of study, apart from the theoretical work. Most students would gain employment through this method, while others would pursue their dream of setting up their own culinary business. As Carnegie continues to maintain its illustrious reputation, the school is now seeking interventions to expand. Through this initiative, more Guyanese can be facilitated in the field of home economics through training at the institution, and enhance the quality of services provided in the fastfood industry. Only November last, the prestigious school produced 96 graduates at its 79th Annual Graduation Exercise.

PHAGWAH 2014 was undeniably tons of fun and frolicking as Guyanese across the country came together, breaking the barriers of ethnicities, status and age. The splendour of the colours added a tangible something to the atmosphere almost everywhere you found people enjoying the day’s festivities. Many went to their respective mandirs, some celebrated in their communities, while others travelled up to the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara, and the Everest Ground, Georgetown, among other places to join friends and loved ones in the fun. Citizen alleges police harassment; seeks justice from higher authorities By Asif Hakim T H I RT Y- N I N E - y e a r- o l d Ricky Ramdannie of Section ‘C’ Block ‘Y’ Golden Grove, East Bank of Demerara, a father of five daughters, aged 11 months, two years, five years, 13 and 15 years respectively, is complaining about abusive language, damage of property and threatening behaviour towards himself and his family by his neighbour, Paul Hendriques, and is alleging police harassment at the Diamond Police Station. On the evening of March 8, the man said, Paul Hendriques was using abusive language at the top of his voice in threatening him thus: “Ricky, I gon blow up your f****** car and kill you! I gon chop you up if I see you on de road. You gon see bloodshed and your brains blow out, and I will light your house on fire!” Ramdannie said his children, traumatised, started to cry and scream, and he made a call to the CID Headquarters and spoke to ASP Reid, telling him what had transpired, and the ASP promised him a police response.

However, after some time, six [6] plainclothes men in a police vehicle came to his house, identified themselves as CID ranks, and asked him what had happened. Ramdannie said he discussed the matter with them, and shortly after, they went over to the neighbour’s house to discuss the matter with him. After a short space of time, they left the area. As soon as the police had left, the neighbour and his son allegedly came out on the road and started to stone Ramdannie’s house. Ramdannie said he was afraid for his life and the life of his family, because his children started to scream again, so he telephoned ASP Reid again and discussed what had occurred. ASP Reid then sent the CID ranks back to Ramdannie’s house, where he told them about the stone throwing incident by his neighbour. They arrested the neighbour and took him to the Diamond Police Station. They requested that Ramdannie should accompany them to the station, but Ramdannie told them he was not going to the station, because the police at Diamond habitually harass and

Aries March 21 - April 19

As you continue on your quest for a connection with someone today, it’s time to take things to a much deeper level. Get as close as you can to them, but be aware that if you are too exuberant you could come off as overwhelming. Instead, opt for a quieter type of charm. Smile and find out if they want to talk. If they don’t, then back off. You’ll make a much better impression by respecting them than if you bulldoze all over them. Try to get them talking anyway you can.

Taurus April 20 - May 20

A new beginning is coming in an old relationship, and you should start to feel it before the end of the day. This is a good time to reach out to this person and suggest an intimate and casual outing. The two of you could use some uninterrupted quiet time to catch up and create new plans for the future together. The balance between you two has shifted, and they are ready to let you take more control. They recognise the changes in you, and want to show you the changes they’ve made.

Gemini May 21 - June 21 East Bank Resident Ricky Ramdannie he approached the corporal on duty to make a statement, the corporal said “Get out of this f****** station and carry y’all s****!” Mrs Ramdannie then asked the corporal how he could embarrass them like that, especially since they were there to make a report. “We are here for help and this is what we have to hear?” she asked, and the corporal replied “You f*** out! And I don’t want hear!” This abuse happened in presence of the attacker and his family. Corporal Britton refused to take a statement from Ramdannie, and the man is alleging that the corporal was totally disrespectful because he has close ties with his abusive neighbour. He is also contending that that show of disrespect would encourage wrongdoing from his neighbour. Ramdannie is currently before the court for two allegations that his neighbour Paul Hendriques made against him, but which he alleges are false. According to him, the police at the Diamond station are apparently not taking this matter seriously, because Paul Hendriques has a lot of contacts and also because he was once a serving member of the Guyana Police Force. Ramdannie is seeking justice, and wants the police at Diamond station to stop harassing him. He is asking the relevant authorities to look into this matter.

Starting a new romance might not be on your list of things to do right now, but sometimes you have no choice but to deal with the feelings that have been stirring right under the surface. You can no longer deny what might be happening, even if your life would be a lot simpler without it. It’s coming, and it’s a very good thing. If you are already in a relationship, you’ll start to feel a rebirth in what the two of you share. A big transition could be coming.

Cancer June 22 - July 22

Communication is vital for you today -- whether it’s via emails, voice mails, text messaging, or good old-fashioned face-to-face conversations. You need to tell people things and you need to learn things from others, and this is the day for a couple of great exchanges. Start the conversations you need to start with a compliment and you’ll start things off on the right foot! If the topic involves emotions, you need to be in charge -- and make sure you are not on the defensive.

Leo July 23 - August 22

Put one of your problems in the hands of someone else today and your needs will be met by others. It’s not about shirking responsibility, it’s about delegating some of your work. You need to have more trust in the people you live and work with -- when they say they are going to do something, they are going to do it! You’ll get a valuable life lesson if you put your faith into someone who is more powerful than you or something that is bigger than you are.

Virgo August 23 - September 22

Sure, you can be impulsive and follow every whim you have today -- but that probably won’t make you very happy at the end of the day. Right now, you need structure. Following the rules and behaving yourself might not sound like fun, but it’s the best route to take today. Be more thorough on your current projects and show those who are watching that you know how to take big responsibilities seriously. Prove yourself today and you’ll be well-rewarded.

Libra September 23 - October 22

Appearance is very important, but your outer attractiveness is nowhere near as important as your inner beauty today. So forget about overhauling your wardrobe and put your attention towards things that really matter. Your outlook on life needs to be polished up and made shiny again, and the best way to do that is to get together with the person or people who make you feel good about your life and where it is going. Get with them for a meal and talk things out, catch up with each other.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21

If you’re looking for an easy way to get through a busy day, spend part of your morning getting the rest of the day organised. You might not be a morning person, but once you start seeing how things fall into place, your energy level will go through the roof. Nothing is as exciting as new possibilities for you right now, and there will be many in your day. Things are going to get done, deadlines will be met, and your schedule is going to have a lot more room -- for a lot more fun.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21

Feeling on the fence about something? Well, pick a side. This is not the day for wishywashy feelings! When you see that something (or someone) is going wrong today, you have to speak up. Make sure that justice is served wherever you go. You don’t have to put yourself in the position of being the world’s police officer, but you should bring things to the attention of people who are in charge. You’re not being a tattletale -- you’re being a responsible human being.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19

Do whatever it takes to come to a compromise with one of your authority figures today. Because if you show the people in power that you are not only out for yourself, you can make a very good impression. Plus, as soon as you start getting things done, you can stop focusing on where you may or may not disagree, creating a happier vibe overall. Follow the path of least resistance today. Worry about accomplishing certain items on your own agenda some other day.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18

More than a few people are going to be eager to debate some recent events and discuss their personal issues with you today. But if you’re not quite ready to devote your entire day to playing amateur psychologist, then you need to get busy as early as you can with your own private business. Otherwise, you are likely to be the shoulder that everyone cries on. Sometimes you like having that role, but sometimes you don’t. Make sure you’re up for it before you start listening.

Pisces February 19 - March 20

It’s wonderful that you have been so driven to reach your career goals, but being so focused on just one aspect of your life could be causing some disruption in the other aspects of your life, namely your personal relationships. Your friends and family miss you! So today, try to start making more time for your personal life. Putting things into their proper balance will help you keep your loved ones smiling -- and it will help you stay smiling, too!

babwe’s Tinashe Panyangara to scrape through for a three-wicket win on the last ball of their Group B encounter in Sylhet yesterday. Chasing 164 for a St Patrick’s Day victory, the associate nation seemed to be cruising against their Test-playing opponents after opener Paul Stirling’s 34-ball 60. Stirling hit nine boundaries and a six and with captain William Porterfield (31) added 80 runs for the opening wicket but Panyangara’s double strike in the 15th over brought

Zimbabwe back in the game. Panyangara (4-37), who was smashed for 18 in his first over by Stirling, also dismissed the dangerous Kevin O’Brien (17) in the 18th over and returned to bowl the final over of the innings with Ireland needing four runs for victory. In the final over, Ireland lost Ed Joyce (20) to Panyangara and Max Sorensen to a run-out off successive balls but managed to scamper for a bye off the last delivery for the winning run with wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor missing a

run-out. Earlier, captain Taylor (59) hit six fours and two sixes and anchored Zimbabwe’s batting as his team posted 163 for five in their 20 overs after being put in to bat. Elton Chigumbura hit 22 off 13 balls with two sixes in the last over to take Zimbabwe to a competitive total after Irish spinners George Dockrell (2-18) and Andy McBrine (2-26) restricted them in the middle overs. In the day’s late match, Stephan Myburgh (55) hit seven

fours and two sixes to register his maiden T20 international fifty and give Netherlands a comfortable six-wicket victory against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Tom Cooper, who also picked up two wickets with the ball, remained unbeaten on 34 off 26 balls as Netherlands reached their target of 152 with seven balls to spare. Paceman Ahsan Malik picked up three wickets for 16 runs as the UAE were bundled out for 151 after opting to bat first.

Clarke broke shoulder in Cape Town, ordered to rest SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) - Australia captain Michael Clarke batted with a broken shoulder on the recent tour of South Africa and has been advised to rest, ruling him out of the domestic first class final later this week, Cricket Australia said yesterday. Clarke, who led his side to a 2-1 Test series victory over South Africa, was struck on the

left shoulder during the third Test in Cape Town earlier this month yet went on to make 161 not out in the tourists’ first innings. “We have since done a series of scans that have demonstrated a fracture near his shoulder joint,” Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said in a statement.

“We expect that this will heal with a period of rest.” Clarke’s New South Wales team will play Western Australia in the domestic Sheffield Shield final in Canberra, March 21-25. Clarke, who was also struck in the arm, thumb, elbow and helmet in the Cape Town match, was due a long break away from the game

anyway, as he was not in Australia’s squad for the ongoing World Twenty20 tournament in Bangladesh. The 32-year-old made himself unavailable for the shortest form of the game at international level in 2011. Australia’s next international series is against Pakistan, probably in the United Arab Emirates, in October.

Eight minutes later the advantage was doubled when Timehri was awarded a penalty. Lawrence Steele stepped up to take the kick and did not disappoint, hitting the ball past custodian Nijun Hooke in the 28th minute. Despite conceding two early goals, the Warriors,

Both teams utiliised their full quota of substitutes during the course of the encounter, Timehri in an effort to maintain the advantage and Kuru Kururu who sought to score but were not allowed to, as they now drop one place down to third in the standings behind Agricola. GUYANA CHRONICLE Tuesday March 18, 2014

Johnson, Hemraj return to Guyana team at expense of Singh, Chattergoon By Calvin Roberts SEWNARINE Chattergoon and Vishal Singh are two of the three batsmen to have recorded half-centuries for Guyana so far, in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-Day tournament, with Assad Fudadin being the other. However, the senior selection committee of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) which is being headed by Rayon Griffith and includes Adrian Amsterdam and Nazimul Drepaul, did not find favour with Singh and Chattergoon for Guyana’s next game against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) that is set to start Friday. The left-handed duo, who have a combined total of 197 runs from six innings, have been replaced by fellow left-handed pair of Leon

Leon Johnson Johnson who was appointed captain of the team but suffered a knee injury prior to its departure for Jamaica two weeks ago, and Chandrapaul Hemraj. Both Chattergoon and Singh have struggled for consistency in the three matches they have played, with Chattergoon, a former Test opener accumulating 87 runs from six innings with a highest score of 50 in the second

round against Barbados at the Guyana National Stadium. However, he has been giving his wicket away with some loose shots, with the most noticeable being in the first innings against the Windward Islands in the last round, when he flashed at one outside the off stump from Kenroy Peters and offered Tyrone Theophile a catch at second slip. One would have expected Chattergoon, who played four Test matches for the West Indies and accumulated 127 runs at an average of 18.14, to guide the younger Tagenarine Chanderpaul during their opening partnership for Guyana, but that was not to be, as he was the first one to be dismissed five out of six times in this tournament. The diminutive Singh, who started with an attractive 73 in the second innings against Jamaica - a game

Guyana lost by seven wickets - has been ordinary since, with scores of 5, 1, 14 and 0, but he still managed to aggregate 111runs, which is second to Fudadin’s 170. Despite this, he will have to watch Guyana’s next game which is a day/night affair at the Three W’s Oval in Cave Hill, St Michael, from the WICB’s website from March 21 to 24, if he decides to stay at home and not go to Trinidad and Tobago to further increase his averages there. All-rounder Christopher Barnwell led the side in the first two rounds against Jamaica and Barbados, while veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, playing his first game of the tournament, took over the leadership reins for the last match against the Windward Islands, and has been retained in the 13man squad. So too is Chanderpaul’s

son, 17-year-old Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who has to date scored 95 runs from his four innings, with a top score of 41 against Barbados, along with the struggling Narsingh Deonarine, who has 76 runs from his six innings, with his individual scores reading 0, 38, 0, 0, 0, 0 and 38. Wicketkeeper/batsman Anthony Bramble and his Albion Cricket Club teammates in spin twins Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo are also part of the travelling party who leave for Barbados sometime today. While Amir Khan, who has played one game against Jamaica following injuries to both Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, has been named in the 13-man squad, there was no place for West Indies ‘A’ team fast bowler Ronsford Beaton. The lanky Essequibian

picked up a side strain during the Jamaica contest and has been relegated to the sidelines ever since, undergoing therapy while Guyana took on Barbados in the first-ever day/night first class contest at the Guyana National Stadium and Windward Islands. In his absence, Young Achievers Sports Club’s Raun Johnson was handed his debut for the game against Barbados and what an impressive one he had, taking 3 for 38 and 1 for 18 in the two innings. He will be expected to share the new ball on the fast Barbados track with Keon Joseph, who has to date taken 3 wickets for 145, with his best figures being 1 for 27 against Jamaica, receiving ample support from Barnwell and Fudadin. The full 13-man squad reads: Leon Johnson (captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Christopher Barnwell, Anthony Bramble, Devendra Bishoo, Assad Fudadin, Narsingh Deonarine, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Veerasammy Permaul, Raun Johnson, Keon Joseph and Amir Khan.

Dutch player accuses team of cheating in World T20 (REUTERS) - Netherlands cricketer Tim Gruijters has accused team management of cheating by forcing him out on medical grounds so they could bring in Tom Cooper as a last-minute replacement for the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. “It’s clear that the Dutch coaching staff decided to misuse the rules, hoodwink the ICC, and get Tom Cooper in for me. It’s a disgrace, it’s a cheat, and I would like to state that I do not want to be part of it,” he said in a Youtube video. The Netherlands cricket board (KNCB) said it had launched an investigation. The International Cricket Council (ICC) allowed Gruijters to be replaced in the Netherlands squad by Australian-born Cooper earlier this week due to a lower-back injury. Cooper, whose mother is from the Netherlands, became available for the World T20

on the Sheffield Shield final,” Gruijters said in the video. “Tom Cooper is probably the best batsman eligible to play for the Netherlands. “Fact two, on the same day, some team mates and I had talked about Tom’s availability. We all agreed that no one was injured, so it would be impossible for Tom Cooper to play. “Fact three, the next morning, the 14th of March, the coaching staff called me to their room. They told me that I would Tom Cooper when his team South Australia failed to qualify for the Sheffield Shield final after the last stage of round-robin games ended on Friday. “Fact number one, on Thursday the 13th of March, Tom Cooper became unexpectedly available for the Dutch team after narrowly missing out

have been in the first eleven had Tom Cooper not been available. “We need someone to be injured they said, we need you to have a scan so that we can get the ICC’s approval.” The 22-year-old, who has played five one-day internationals and eight T20s for Netherlands, said he was bullied into having a scan on a long-standing back injury. “The scan showed I have a bad back. No surprise there. I have had a bad back for years, just like others have had bad

shoulders and bad knees,” he added. “Like all sportsmen, I have learned to deal with the limitations and the pain. In fact, my back is better than it has been in a while. I think I am in the best form possible for this tournament.” The KNCB said Gruijters’ version of events differed from that of the team management’s. “The Board ... regrets the controversy which has arisen following the departure of Tim Gruijters from the Dutch

squad at the World Twenty20 tournament in Bangladesh.” it said in a statement on its website. “The account of Tim Gruijters himself regarding the course of events differs from the account of the team management in Bangladesh. “The KNCB Board has as a result of the current controversy initiated an investigation and shall take evidence from all the relevant parties in order to gain understanding of the course of events.”

MILO/PETRA U-20 SCHOOLS C’SHIP

Nedd, Gritten net five as Carmel drub David Rose

ON DECEMBER 25 last at the Number 5 ground in West Berbice, Ash Educational Trust inflicted a 13-0 whipping on President’s College when the two sides met in the Kashif and Shanghai/Chico Elite Next Generation Football tournament. Unofficially, that scoreline could have gone down in the history books as the largest margin of victory by a school team here in Guyana, until last Sunday when Carmel Secondary humiliated David Rose Secondary with a 16-0 thrashing at the Ministry of Education ground. The two sides were meeting on the final day of preliminary round action in this year’s Milo-sponsored, Petra Organisation-organised Under-20 Schools Football Championships. The key players on target

for the victors were Marlon Nedd and Moses Gritten, who each found the back of the net five times, with Nedd doing so in the 2nd, 5th, 22nd, 46th and 48th minutes of play while Gritten emulated him with his goals coming in the13th, 15th, 20th, 29th and 40th minutes of play. Tevin Curry (23rd and 54th) and Jovian Glen (26th and 34th) also placed their names on the scorers’ sheet more than once and following solitary strikes from Nicholas Kirton (26th) and Shivanah Persaud in the 44th minute, David Rose must have wished they had not turned up for the contest. Shawn Grovesnor got a brace in the 22nd and 32nd min-

utes of play for Kingston Secondary, which was complemented by Vincent Thomas’ goal in the 40th minute that guided them to a 3-1 victory over Richard Ishmael, for whom Ike Padmore found the back of the net in the 25th minute. Michael DaSilva and Jaydev Mona were the men finding the back of the net for Queen’s College who blanked Chase Academy 2-0, with the losers feeling double pain when they lost the services of Keon Douglas who was expelled from the game in the 60th minute. However, while the fans and students of other schools were enjoying the action on the field of play during the three matches, the contest between St Winefride’s and Tutorial High

was abandoned following an infringement on the field, with the former leading 2-1. Andrew Holder had gotten a double for St Winefride’s in the 7th and 47th minutes of play, even as Edward Pereira had nullified his first goal with his 32nd minute strike for Tutorial, but the fracas that ensued shortly after forced the organisers to call a halt to proceedings. It is unclear what penalty was handed down to the defaulters, but knowing the directors of Petra Organisation very well, they are not persons who encourage indiscipline or insularity, hence some punishment will be handed down to both institutions. T&T crush Leewards by innings and 107 runs By BRIJ PARASNATH In Trinidad & Tobago TRINIDAD and Tobago crushed Leeward Islands by an innings and 107 runs in their third round fixture which was completed yesterday after one hour and 26 minutes of play from the scheduled starting time of 15:00hrs of their historic day/night fixture at the famous Queen’s Park Oval. On Sunday, T&T declared their first innings closed on 458 for 7 and then bowled out Leewards for 113 in their first innings. With a mammoth lead of 345 runs, T&T immediately enforced the follow-on and although Leewards’ batsmen fared better in the second, they were still under immense pressure to stave off an innings defeat and found themselves reeling at 159 for the loss of six

Akeal Hosein wickets, the last dismissal of the night being that of their captain Kieran Powell; who staged a brave battle until he succumbed with two balls remaining for the night’s play. Powell contributed 67. For Leewards first innings, Jahmar Hamilton’s top-score of 52 was made up of one six and eight fours off

73 balls while T&T’s seamers Shannon Gabriel (3 for 21) and skipper Reyad Emrit (2 for 35) did the early damage. Spinners Imran Khan (2 for 12), Hosein (1 for 29) and Yannic Cariah (1 for 15) took care of the lower order as Leewards closed Saturday night with the score on 86 for 9. Yesterday, skipper Reyad Emrit signalled his intention to utilise the quicker bowlers to polish off Leewards’ lower order and secure a massive victory margin. He made the early breakthrough by having overnight b a t s m a n H a y d e n Wa l s h caught by Evin Lewis without a run to his name while Shannon Gabriel removed the experienced Tonito Willet, caught by wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo for 10. There was a short rearguard fightback by Justin Athanaze and Gavin Tonge,

who together featured in an enterprising 52-run ninth-wicket partnership. Both batsmen smashed a six and some powerful boundaries before leg-spinner Imran Khan won a confident lbw shout against Athanaze who made 38. Khan emerged as the main wicket-taker when he forced Tonge to offer Yannic Cariah a straightforward catch at long off and allowed the Trinidadians to celebrate their second consecutive outright victory for the season. Khan finished with 5 for 53 from 22.2 overs while Gabriel took two for 63 from 20 overs and Emrit one for 24 from 16 overs. T&T did not have the bowling services of all-rounder Akeal Hosein who injured himself after scoring his maiden First Class century on Saturday. Hosein made an undefeated 102 and shared a match-winning 197-run

seventh-wicket partnership with wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo who was unfortunately adjudged lbw, nine runs short of his maiden first class century. Trinidad and Tobago started the historic first day-night First Class match at the Oval on a positive note on Friday. The homesters raced to 263 for the loss of six wickets with solid half-centuries from Evin Lewis (78), Darren Bravo (60), Jonathan Augustus (61); Katwaroo (1 not out) and Hosein (0 not out) On Saturday both Katwaroo and Hosein battled through the first session and shared an unbroken 99-run seventh-wicket partnership that carried T&T to 360 without further loss when both teams retired to the pavilion for dinner. Lewis, in his fifth First Class match, grabbed the spotlight with some attacking strokes and together; with the

attractive Darren Bravo; they featured an enterprising second-wicket partnership worth 105 invaluable runs. Twenty-two-year-old Lewis raced to his maiden FC fifty while Bravo, in his 59th FC match and 100th FC innings; reached his 18th fifty. Lewis counted one six and eleven fours off 165 balls for 78 when he was dismissed at 161, adjudged handled ball while seventeen runs later; Bravo departed for 60 that included two sixes and four fours off 141 balls. Jason Mohammed made 22 while debutant Jonathan Augustus enjoyed an auspicious outing on his QPCC home turf by spanking a classy 61 that contained twelve boundaries off 66 deliveries. T&T will travel to Bimshire for their fourth round clash against Barbados at the Kensington Oval from Friday.

Buxton United’s lone goal came off the boot of Denver Dennis in the 24th minute and 10 minutes later, both teams were reduced to 10 men as Western Tigers’ Trison Carmichael and Buxton United’s

Sherwin Hope were red-carded for ungentlemanly conduct after they became engaged in a brawl. Quacy Price, Romario Welcome and Kashif Jackman netted for BV/Triumph in the 32nd, 84th and 85th minutes respectively while Milerock’s lone goal was off Denzil Fordyce’s boot in the77th minute. World Cup win would erase NZ pain: Aguilleira and they always offer us their support. It is great that they have faith in us to come here and deliver and it would be magnificent for both West Indies teams to lift the cups on April 6,” Aguilleira said here yesterday. “Our motto for this tournament is ‘moving in faith’. We didn’t have a good time on the recent tour of New Zealand so it is time now for us to bounce back and show what we are made of. We would like to take the title and continue to make the people of the Caribbean proud.” A g u i l l e i r a ’s c h a r g e s will also be looking to make amends for their near misses in recent global tournaments.

HAKA, Bangladesh (CMC) – West Indies Women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira says winning the Twenty20 World Cup would help her side put their miserable tour of New Zealand

behind them. The West Indies failed to win a single game on tour earlier this year, swept 3-0 in the one-day series and lost 4-0 in the five-match T20 series that followed.

Aguilleira said what would be even more amazing was if both West Indies teams dominated the tournament. “Darren Sammy said he is dreaming of a ‘Windies double’ and that’s great. We always keep in contact with the men’s team

They reached the semi-finals of the 2010 T20 World Cup staged in the Caribbean and repeated the feat at the 2012 edition in Sri Lanka. Last year, they were also good enough to make the final of the ICC 50-over World Cup in India. They launch their campaign today with a warm-up match against South Africa at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothistan in Savar. Aguilleira said the Windies women would be taking every match seriously. “It is always good to start with a win. We came here to play eight matches and to win all eight matches, so tomorrow

Timehri Panthers take the lead after win over Kuru Kururu Warriors TIMEHRI Panthers have maintained their unblemished record with a 2-0 win over Kuru Kururu Warriors when play in the Stag Beer-sponsored East Bank Football Association division-one league continued at the Grove Playfield yesterday afternoon. Both teams were unbeaten prior to the clash but at the end of 90 minutes it was Timehri who walked away with full points, now moving to 9, which places them at the top of the points standings. The win by Timehri also saw them maintaining their record as the best defensive team so far in the competition, scoring a total of six goals while their defence is yet to

we will look to make a positive start against the South Africans. It is a very important match,” Aguilleira said. “We won all our matches when we were here in Bangladesh back in 2011 at the ICC World Cup qualifiers and it is a matter of picking up where we left off. The conditions here are similar to those in the West Indies – with the hot sun and we know the pitches will favour our great spin attack. “We will be looking to dominate in that department especially on the dry pitches we expect here in Bangladesh.” The match bowls off at 13:30hrs (03:30hrs Eastern Caribbean Time).

JONATHAN Trott ‘conned’ the cricketing world by using mental illness as an excuse for his early departure from the recent Commonwealth Bank Ashes Series, according to former England captain Michael Vaughan. In an interview with Sky Sports in the UK last week, Trott admitted he felt ‘guilty’ watching his team-mates struggle in the 5-0 whitewash at the hands of the Australians.

Vaughan, however, used his column in The Telegraph to lash out at the batsman, stating that his peers will now look at him in a different light. “We were allowed to believe he was struggling with a serious mental health issue and treated him with sensitivity and sympathy,” Vaughan wrote. “He was obviously not in a great place but he was struggling for cricketing reasons and not mental, and there is a

massive difference. “There is a danger we are starting to use stress-related illness and depression too quickly as tags for players under pressure.” Vaughan, who captained his country in 51 Tests between 2003 and 2008, said Trott was using mental health as an excuse for a lack of form and technical shortcomings against Mitchell Johnson and
