Hymotie wants to go home and rest her broken leg

GUYANA CHRONICLE Friday July 18, 2014

––patiently awaiting relatives to pick her up at GPHC By Shirley Thomas

A SIXTY-FIVE-YEAROLD pensioner, who suffered a fractured right leg while on her way to the General Post Office Corporation (GPO) to uplift her pension

last Friday, has since been warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), unknown to her relatives. Hymotie Bisnauth, who lives at Parfait Harmonie with her daughter, Maharanie

Singh and son-in-law Rudolph Singh would like them to know that she has been in hospital for the last six days and was discharged yesterday. She is, however, waiting to be picked up by them before today is out. The beleaguered woman recalls that last Friday she had just gotten out of the speed boat at the Transport and Harbours wharf at Stabroek, when as she was walking outside the market, a car drove over her right

instep. She cried out in pain, alerting the driver to what had happened, and he reversed but this time hit the leg higher up, resulting in her sustaining a fracture. At the time, she was walking along with a woman, who had earlier introduced herself as Elvie Joseph, and her grandchild. The driver opened the door and the injured woman sat down on the seat, along with Joseph and her grandchild. He drove them to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC, but on arriving there, dropped them off and disappeared. She therefore has no particulars about him or his car, since she was writhHymotie Bisnauth: Discharged and waiting to be picked up from hospital ing in pain and the other woman was assisting her to get in and out of the car. All she could remember she said, was that, “The porter bring me in wid de chair, and he (the driver) go lang he way. He never come back.” She says, however, that she would remember his face anywhere she sees him. Fortunately, she has been able to retain her pension book, identification and other business cards, but never managed to reach the post office to uplift her pension. Hymotie said her daughter and son-in-law are probably of the view that she had uplifted her pension, then diverted in an attempt to spend some time with other relatives, which she would regularly do.

Attorney-General says...

Opposition on ‘desperate fishing expedition’ against Dr. Singh ––Constitutional compliance can never violate criminal law By Vanessa Narine CONTRARY to claims by members of the combined Opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC), the Executive’s exercise of its Constitutional powers can never lead to a Constitutional crisis. According to Attorney-General (AG) and Minster of Legal Affairs, Mr. Anil Nandlall, “The term ‘Constitutional crisis’ is one that the Opposition banters around because it sounds politically sexy and perhaps misleadingly intelligent. The fact is that this Government has taken no action that breached the supreme law of Guyana but in fact and to the contrary has acted in scrupulous compliance with express provisions of the Constitution.” He further told the Guyana Chronicle in an invited comment yesterday, “Indeed, if they are so convinced that the Government has acted in violation Minister Anil Nandlall

of the Constitution, then the Constitution itself mandates them to seek legal recourse in the Courts. The daily dose of diatribe in the press will not bring forth the remedy or the recourse for which they clamour.” He cited as examples of their daily lamentations the brouhaha created in the press in relation to the Finance Minister’s restoration of the Budgetary Cuts, and then laying a Statement of Expenses before the National Assembly, and the President not assenting to some Bills passed by the National Assembly. “In both instances, the Finance Minister and the President acted in accordance with expressly outlined procedure provided in the Constitution, respectively,” Minister Nandlall

‘The term ‘Constitutional crisis’ is one that the Opposition banters around because it sounds politically sexy and perhaps misleadingly intelligent. The fact is that this Government has taken no action that breached the supreme law of Guyana but in fact and to the contrary has acted in scrupulous compliance with express provisions of the Constitution’

said, adding: “When the Executive exercises the powers that are constitutionally vested in it, we hear screams of constitutional crisis being created. How can a ‘constitutional crisis’ be created by exercising powers that are prescribed by the Constitution?” To bolster his argument, Minister Nandlall quoted Article 218 (3) of the Constitution which reads: “The Minister responsible for Finance or any other Minister designated by the President shall cause to be prepared and laid before the National Assembly, before or within ninety days, after the commencement of each financial year estimate of the revenues and expenditure of Guyana for that year. “If in respect of any financial year it is found: (a) that the amount appropriated by the Appropriation Act for any purpose is insufficient or that a need has arisen for expenditure for a purpose for which no amount has been appropriated by that Act; or, “(b) that any moneys have been expended for any purpose in excess of the amount appropriated for that purpose by the Appropriation Act or for a purpose for which no amount has been appropriated by that Act, a supplementary estimate or, as the case may be, a statement See page 11

Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 295 people Israel orders ground reported shot down near Ukraine-Russia border offensive in Gaza; heavy (Yahoo News) A MALAYSIA Airlines passenger plane en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam and carrying 295 people was reported shot down near the UkraineRussia border Thursday. Both government officials and pro-Russia separatists fighting in the region denied responsibility. An aide to Ukraine’s interior minister quoted by Interfax said the total number of dead in the crash of Flight MH17 was more than 300 and includes 23 U.S. citizens. An Associated Press reporter at the scene reported seeing at least 22 bodies. The head of Ukrainian’s emergency services told Reuters that search efforts at the scene of the crash were being hampered by “armed terrorists.” In brief comments made in Delaware Thursday afternoon, President Barack Obama called the crash a “terrible tragedy.” He added the White House was aware of reports of American fatalities and was working

but did not say why he was certain. Witnesses quoted by Russian media outlets said they saw a plane being hit by what they thought was a rocket, according to the news service. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Ukraine’s military was not responsible for the reported attack, which he called an “act of terror.”

(Reuters) - ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday instructed the military to begin a ground offensive in Gaza, an official statement from his office said. Reuters witnesses and Gaza residents reported heavy artillery and naval shelling and helicopter fire along the Gaza border. “The prime minister and defense minister have instructed the IDF (Israel Defence Force) to begin a ground operation tonight in order to hit the terror tunnels from Gaza into Israel,” the statement said. Israel and Palestinian militants in the densely populated enclave have been fighting a cross border war for 10 days. The Israeli military says Gaza militants have fired more than 1,300 rockets into Israel. Palestinian health officials say 233 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air and naval strikes. civilian has been killed by fire from Gaza. A statement from the Israeli military said the operation will include “infantry, armored corps, engineer corps, artillery and intelligence combined with aerial and naval support.” Before dawn on Thursday, about a dozen Palestinian fighters tunneled under the border, emerging near an Israeli community. At least one was killed when Israeli aircraft bombed the group, the military said. On Thursday night, loud thuds and flashes of orange light lit the sky in the eastern Gaza strip as Israeli gunboats fired shells and tracer fire, while artillery and helicopters fired over the border, Reuters witnesses on both sides of the border said. Gaza residents and medical officials reported heavy shelling along the eastern borders from the southern town of Rafah up to the north of the enclave.

Bruce lashes US –

Former PM claims America has no moral authority to penalise Jca for human-rights abuse

Proximity to the US considerably boosted Soviet monitoring of American communications

Putin denies Russia plans to reopen spy base in Cuba (BBC News) RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin has denied reports that he made a deal with Cuba to reopen an electronic listening post on the Caribbean island. The Lourdes base near Havana was used by the Soviets to spy on the US during the Cold War. Speaking at the Brics summit in Brazil, Mr Putin said Russia could “meet its defence needs without this component”. Russia’s Kommersant newspaper had earlier re-

ported that Russia and Cuba had agreed to reopen the spy facility. Mr Putin closed the base in 2001, citing concerns over its cost. The paper said the deal to make the base operational again had been reached during Mr Putin’s visit to Cuba last week. A Russian security source quoted by Reuters news agency had confirmed the Kommersant report, saying “a framework agreement” had been agreed. The Lourdes base began

operations in 1967 and provided intelligence for Soviet state security bodies. It also handled secret communications for the Soviet navy. In Soviet times some 3,000 specialists worked there, then in the 1990s Russia reduced the staff by about half. Kommersant said staffing on that level would not be required now, because of improvements in technology. The base was converted into a university after the Russians left. It is now the University of Information Sciences (UCI).

Reopening Lourdes itself would always have been out of the question, says the BBC’s Sarah Rainsford in Havana. Russia is planning to help build a new civilian airport next to the site of the old spy base. When Russia shut the base in 2001 the annual cost - the rent paid to Cuba - was $200m (£115m). Cuba was a Cold War hotspot. The crisis over Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962 almost escalated into nuclear war.

Top Cop condemns soldiers’ actions

(Trinidad Guardian) ACTING Police Commissioner Stephen Williams is condemning soldiers going out on patrols and carrying out operations on their own. He also made it clear there was a role for the Police Service and another role for the Defence Force, adding that it was illegal for soldiers to wear masks and carry out searches. Over the last two weeks there have been numerous complaints by members of the public, especially those who live in “hot spot” areas, of soldier abuse. Since the June 29 shooting death of Lance Cpl Kayode Thomas Laventille residents have claimed soldiers were patrolling, searching were “arresting” people without police officers present. At a press briefing held at the Police Administration Building yesterday, Williams said he was aware of these complaints, and also expressed concern. “What has been happening over the last two

weeks, I personally, as the head of the Police Service, I have concerns. I have similar concerns which you share. I have brought those concerns to the attention of

the chief of Defence Staff (Major Gen Kenrick Maharaj) and he has given me the assurance that he has not authorised any soldier to carry out any operations,”

Williams said. Williams said he had been out of the country for the last nine days and it was unfair for people to complain about his silence on the issue.

Bruce Golding (Jamaica Gleaner) FORMER Prime Minister Bruce Golding has come out swinging against the United States, declaring that nation lacks the moral authority to cite human-rights abuses as reasons to withdraw support to the Jamaican security forces. Golding said there was no evidence that outgoing Police Commissioner Owen Ellington was involved in such abuses or failed to take action against those who carried out extrajudicial activities. Speaking Wednesday on Power 106 FM radio talk show, ‘Cliff Hughes On-line’, the former prime minister said the US has a long history of carrying out heinous actions against other countries which are

tantamount to human rights abuses. Referring to the US as a country that has reserved on to itself “the right to dispatch drones to go and extrajudicially kill persons who it alleges to be terrorists and in the process kill civilians including children”, Golding said the US has no basis to lambaste other countries for alleged human-rights violations. Golding stressed that these violations have largely gone unpunished. “The numbers vary, but they have ranged between 200 and up to 1,000 persons who have been killed by drone strikes, these persons were never given their day in court, never able to say ‘no, is mistake yuh mek, is not true’,” Golding stated.

President has fruitful talks with Indian, Chinese colleagues ––At BRICS meet in Brazil

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar has described as positive his meeting on Wednesday evening with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and China’s President Xi Jinping in neighbouring Brazil. He said that not only was he satisfied with the positive outcomes of their discussions, but that efforts will be made to further strengthen whatever economic, social, cultural and other types of relations exist between Guyana and each of the two countries. President Ramotar was in neighbouring Brazil for the sixth BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Summit which concluded yesterday. He was accompanied by Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh. While there, he requested the help of Indian experts in exploring Guyana’s hydrocarbon resources, a burgeoning sector, as well for its legal sector. Guyana and India already enjoy a very high level of co-operation

in the areas of infrastructure development, mining, and information technology, and the latter has been offering the former lines of credit on a regular basis. The two leaders have expressed their desire to build even further on these areas of cooperation. China and Guyana also have strong ties in the fields of infrastructure, mining, forestry, banking, construction and shipping. Both leaders have also committed to building on their relationship in these and other emerging sectors. The leaders of the BRICS held closed-door talks in Brasilia with counterparts from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and other Latin American nations. The gathering follows a BRICS-only summit Monday in the seaside city of Fortaleza, where the five nations agreed to the creation of a $50B Bank for infrastructure projects, and a $100B crisis reserve fund which has been nicknamed “a miniIMF.”

PPP rededicates Michael Forde Bookstore & Internet Café ––on 50th Death Anniversary of dedicated former employee

After the package was detected by Michael Forde and others on duty in the store, Forde was advised to take it outside of the building. Once outside the bookstore, Forde opened up the package and the device exploded, killing him instantly. of excess showing the sums required or spent shall be laid before the Assembly by the Minister responsible for finance or any other Minister designated by the President.” As the Minister went on to say, “Any person who is functionally literate, and who is aware of the facts, would quickly realise that the Minister of Finance acted in conformity with procedure set out in Article 218 (3) above. “This very provision was interpreted by the Honourable Chief Justice in both of his written rulings in the Budget Cut case. In that case, I requested an Order, directing the Minister of Finance to restore the monies cut from the 2012 Budget. In declining to make the Order against the Minister of Finance, the Chief Justice pointed in his ruling to Article 218 (3), and stated that the discretionary power to restore the monies cut from the Budget is vested in the Minister in Article 218 (3); therefore, it is up to the Minister whether he would exercise the power or not. Were the Court to order him to do so to restore the Budget Cut, the Court would be guilty of usurping the power of the Minister of Finance, which 218 (3) of the Constitution solely resides in him.” FISHING EXPEDITION He summed it all up saying: “Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan’s, Mr. Carl Greenidge’s and Mr. Joe Harmon’s rantings must therefore be construed as a desperate fishing expedition against the Minister of Finance, with a hope that they catch something.” As for Ramjattan’s claim that the Minister of Finance committed a criminal offence, Minister Nandlall said: “Mr. Ramjattan has appointed himself investigator, judge, jury and executioner, all rolled up in one. In all of his wild utterances in the press, he is yet to cite which section of which criminal statute has been contravened by the Minister of Finance. “As a lawyer, that is the first thing one would expect him to do. In my view, it is simply legally impossible for a person to act in compliance with the Constitution, and by that very action violate the criminal law.” Wondering aloud whether Mr. Ramjattan was just playing to the public gallery or whether he is serious, the Attorney-General said: “If he is serious, as a colleague in the legal profession, I can’t help but worry for him. The very Mr. Ramjattan, his Party and the APNU all said nothing when the Minister of Finance, in identical circumstances, did the identical thing in the year 2012 and 2013. Are they now telling the nation that they were asleep for two years?” DUPLICITOUS And, charging that the opposition’s cries of “constitutional crisis” were duplicitous, Minister Nandlall said: “The Opposition voiced the possibility of moving a no-confidence vote against the current Administration, and you did not hear the Government cry ‘constitutional crisis’. It is because it is their constitutional right. “However, when the Government exercises its constitutional powers, it is met with the hysteric cry of ‘constitutional crisis’. Not a single time have they questioned these acts of alleged gross constitutional violations in the Courts, although they have threatened to do so on innumerable occasions. “The reason is that they don’t have a case, and they were so advised by those who know better.”

Captain’s initial story not holding water

––Relatives find one body, three still unaccounted for By Leroy Smith LOCAL investigators may now be paying even more attention to the lone survivor, the captain of the Guyanese vessel that was allegedly attacked in Surinamese waters by pirates last week. The Guyana Chronicle was informed that during yesterday’s search of the Mahaica foreshore, triggered by discovery of the ill-fated vessel in the same vicinity earlier this week, relatives of the missing crewmen stumbled upon the body of Andrew Goopie, erasing all of the boat captain’s claims that the alleged piracy attack had occurred in Surinamese waters. The body was clad only in a brief, and its parts were evidently not tied up, clearly contradicting the information which the captain had given to investigators. The captain, still in Suriname according to information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, has been con-

vincing investigators there that he and the other four men had been attacked and beaten by pirates, who later chopped and tied up the other crew members before throwing them overboard. He was, however, never able to explain how he was really able to get away from the more than four pirates who had reportedly carried out the attack without any of them going after him, although he did say that he had plunged overboard and had managed to swim away, and was later rescued by persons from that country. The incident which occurred last week Tuesday was first reported to Guyanese officials not as a piracy attack, but that the crew members were missing. However, the vessel which was reportedly attacked in Surinamese waters strangely showed up at the Mahaica foreshore after it had been seen drifting in that vicinity by other fishers earlier this week.

Crime Chief Leslie James did express to the Guyana Chronicle his concern that the vessel would strategically show up at that location after drifting, when the current and rough waters would have subsided. James indicated to the Guyana Chronicle that the police were investigating the matter but were not able to get much out of the captain, since he was still in Suriname assisting police investigators there with their investigations. The police were moving to question persons from the Mahaica and Mahaicony areas who are in the business of fishing to ascertain if they may have any information pertaining to the disappearance of the men and the appearance of their vessel in that area. Now that the body of one of the men has been recovered at Mahaica in relatively close proximity to where the vessel had been discovered, the police are working with

At the moment, the police have two persons in custody assisting with their investigations. The men are said to be from Berbice and Vryheid’s Lust respectively. The family members of the missing crewmen are continuing their search for the other three persons. The captain’s account is that the men had been tied up before they were tossed into the water.

Executives of the PPP/C at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Number 66 cemetery By Michael Khan ON the occasion of the 41st anniversary of the Ballot Box Martyrs, the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) held a wreath-laying ceremony and public meeting to honour their fallen comrades who paid the ultimate price in defence of democracy. Bholanauth Parmanand, 45, and Jagan Ramessar, 17, were shot dead by members of the Guyana Defence Force on the evening of the general elections on July 16, 1973 outside of the polling station at Number 63 Village on the Corentyne, while demanding that the PPP votes be counted at the place of poll, or a Party agent be allowed to accompany the ballot boxes to wherever the military personnel were instructed to take them. On Wednesday, a formal wreath-laying ceremony was held at the graves of the martyrs at the Number 66 cemetery, where homage was paid by members of the Central Executive Committee of the PPP/C, the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), political activists and relatives. DIVYA SIEUDARSAN DID GUYANA PROUD

She’s appealing and captivating

--at Miss India Worldwide 2014

D i v y a Sieudarsan, the Guyanese Temptress who turned heads at Miss India Worldwide 2014

IT is my own opinion that Guyanese need to move away from the callous attitude of not celebrating our beauty queens when they would not have placed well in the international pageants. If we should only be honest with ourselves, we would agree that, ever so often, our girls, who are excellent beauty ambassadors, may not have placed for reasons beyond their control. Considering that past competitors may have, through their naïve actions, put other promising local contestants at a disadvantage, I’d better not expound here on this issue… Not so long ago, the delightful and versatile Divya Sieudarsan represented Guyana at the 2014 Miss India Worldwide pageant, and although she did not place in the final five, she still remains a hot topic on the lips of practically everyone with whom she had come into contact. So well did she shine like a rare Guyanese diamond that all the other girls, obviously green with envy, were reluctant to interact with her. (Don’t we recall the ‘bitch fights’ of the species that unfurl at these pageants?) She was always the centre of attraction, and was flocked by eager photographers at every interval for photo opps. This did not go down very well with her competition, but should we be penalized for producing exquisite Guyanese beauties? Away with the envious gathering that dared to shoot venomous daggers at our enchanting temptresses!!! On the Safari in Dubai, Divya was an untamed wonder, fusing her excellent good looks with the ‘call of the wild’ to ignite a provocative fire so scorching that it scourged her lagging opponents and blazed a trail none could ever follow. She did great justice to the Sonia Noel (veteran Guyanese designer) pieces that were part of her lavish wardrobe, and was a ‘midnight wonder’ in evening gowns by local designer Randy Madray. And this diva was certainly prepared for the stage,

This girl was certainly on fire

fetching a fifty-pound suitcase of marvellous shoes as she pranced, pivoted and sashayed to the delight of her many admirers. Though she is a bit disappointed in not placing at this forum, Divya has returned with a wealth of experience, and would certainly relive the experience if given the chance. She advises potential queens to believe in themselves, completely ignore the negatives, and strive to do their best always. Chandini Rambalak reminisces GUYANESE franchise holder Chandini Rambalack was all high praise for the queen, and made the following declarations to Bombshell. “As franchise holder, I am very proud of Miss India

Guyana 2014, Ms. Divya Sieudarsan, as she continued the path led by the previous Miss India Guyana Queens. She represented Guyana at her very best, and did her country very proud at Miss India Worldwide in Dubai. “From the first day, Divya stood out among the remaining contestants as she was prepared day by day with wardrobe co-ordination, stunning beauty showcase, composure, and great personality, which made her a very brave and confident contestant. Her wardrobe, being completed by local designers Sonia Noel and Randy Madray, just added as positive factors to her continuous dazzle. In my view and opinion, from experiences from previous pageants, this particular competition was not as strong; and I was personally disappointed that Miss India Guyana did not place in the top ten finalists. She delivered well on stage and stood out among her competitors.” “On a final note, I would like to thank Travel Span Airlines for their undying support, as well as Air Services Ltd.” Ms Rambalack was also grateful for the support of Guyana’s entourage: Seema Ali, Seon Barrington, Sonia Noel, and Randy Madray, Shavy, Dereck Moore, Lynette Mangar, Karishma Narwani and Aagman Restaurant. She bestowed gratitude on Padmini Rambalak for planning and organizing the Ms. Sieudarsan Meet & Greet Event and Press Conference in New York, along with Beni’s Restaurant, the performers and all the Guyanese media that supported the queen.

Bombshell’s Most Provocative Babes…

Aaliyah Rosheuvel: lovely as the dawn; gracious as a swan I JUST can’t understand why, in this beautiful land of ours, so many people are of the most vexed view that ‘curvy gyals’ are not sexy or beautiful. And I am saying this because, just recently, I was in the company of five men and more than fifteen women (who were too skinny for comfort), and that was exactly their general consensus at the end of the day. Try as I might to change their opinions, those misshapen men and wispy-looking women would NOT budge from their mistaken mindset. And it got to the point where they became witchy and spiteful against the curvy damsels. Well, here I am to silence them forever by showcasing the voluptuous and vivacious Aaliyah Rosheuvel, who is just the epitome of what our modern-day women should be. Take no offence, my ultra slim ladies; it’s alright to be slim and sexy -- in the same way that it’s quite fine for the vivacious to flaunt their curves, especially if those are superb curves and contours like the provocative Aaliyah possesses. This divine damsel believes that curvy women are indeed beautiful, and she proclaims, “I am hot and sexy as any other woman. GUYANA CHRONICLE Friday July 18, 2014

`Mystery Man’ By Calvin Roberts INSPIRED by the bowling of the mysterious Sunil Narine, host Guyana Amazon Warriors defeated Red Steel by 11 runs in a Super Over contest, when the two sides met in the fifth match of this year’s Limacol Caribbean Premier League at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence last night. After seeing fast bowler Ronsford Beaton claim 2 for 15 backed by Narine’s 2 for 23, which rocked the Red Steel and reduced them to 118 for 8 off their 20 overs, the home team on the back of Man-of-the-Match Christopher Barnwell’s aggressive 37 and 32 from Lendl Simmons, finished on 118 for 9 off their 20 overs. Asked to do battle in a Super Over to decide a winner, the Guyana Amazon Warriors started positively with Barnwell dispatching the first ball from Kevon Cooper for six to send a partisan near packed to capacity home crowd in frenzy, as the Amazon Warriors ended on 11 for 1. Narine then stepped up to the plate and showed the Guyanese public the bowling that has been mesmerising batsmen around the world, sending down four dot balls to Nicholas Pooran before he holed out the fifth one to Martin Guptil at long off, to seal off the game for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. Earlier in the contest, Denesh Ramdin called correctly and asked the visitors to take first strike, a move that paid dividend as they were reduced to 34 for 4, losing the wickets of Nasir Jamshed (01), Ross Taylor (01), and brothers Darren and Dwayne Bravo for 1 and 3 respectively in that order. Opener Evin Lewis who top scored with 39 (51balls, 2x6, 1x4) pushed the score

to 64 in partnership with Kevin O’Brien (19), before Lewis was caught by Jimmy Neesham off Narine, enabled Pooran to join O’Brien and they pushed the Red Steel over the 100 run mark in the 18th over. Pooran, who made a quick-fire 37 off 17 balls with three sixes and two fours, seemed set to thrill the crowd in a similar manner as he did last year, before Neesham held his offer off Krishmar Santokie at 111 for 6 in the penultimate over. Two wickets by Beaton in the final over underlined the fight back shown by the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who in their turn at the wicket were wobbling at 56 for 6 in reply, losing Martin Guptil (04), Mohammed Hafeez (00), Ramdin (04), debutant Leon Johnson (01), Neesham (07) and Simmons. Up to that stage, Simmons was the leading scorer for the Amazon Warriors with his 32 being scored off 25 deliveries with three fours and one six, struck over backward squareleg off the fiery Fidel Edwards (2 for 29) who saw Samuel Badree and Suleiman Benn catapult the home team’s innings. Badree ended with 3 for 18 from his four overs, one of which was a maiden and the lone one of the contest, while Benn took 1 for 29, but when their spell ended, Barnwell stepped into overdrive in the same way Lewis Hamilton would in a F1 race. He launched Cooper back over his head for 6 off the first ball of the 19th over, before chipping one straight to O’Brien at longon, with Guyana Amazon Warriors 14 away from victory and when Santokie (03) was run out by Cooper, whose throw to Pooran found him short, the Warriors needed 9 off three balls, with Beaton strolling to the wicket to partner Veerasammy Permaul. The beanpole Beaton who was born in Monsteratt, steered the first delivery from Dwayne Bravo to third man for four and got two off the next delivery, bringing the equation to three off the final delivery, for which himself and Permaul got two after Pooran dropped a dolly, sending the game into the Super Over.

Rahane century rescues India at Lord’s ... James Anderson becomes most successful England Test bowler on home soil

By Josh Reich LONDON, England (Reuters) - Ajinkya Rahane scored a well-compiled century to help rescue India’s first innings on the opening day of the second Test against England at Lord’s yesterday. England had reduced the visitors to 145 for seven on a bowler-friendly pitch early in the final session, but Rahane’s 103, along with support from number nine Bhuvneshwar Kumar (36), ensured India had rallied to 290 for nine at the close. Having won the toss and elected to bowl, the hosts initially struggled to find their rhythm on a green-looking surface, taking only two wickets before lunch. However, a four-wicket burst in the middle session followed by another dismissal shortly after tea put England in control before Rahane’s late assault. Rahane’s knock, which included 15 fours and a six, was ended by a sharp caught-and-bowled effort by James Anderson late in the day. Tail-enders Ishant Sharma (12) and Mohammed Shami (14) safely navigated the closing overs, helped by field placings that at times saw five or six fielders on the boundary,

to ensure England will have to come out and bowl on this morning. “I just wanted to be myself and play my game, I was just talking to myself, I wanted to play as close (to my body) as possible and play my shots,” Rahane told a news conference. “First session they bowled a little bit short and second session they came with a different plan and (pitched) a little bit up. “That sort of line on this wicket will suit our bowlers as well. Tomorrow is going to be a crucial day ... it’s not going to be easy for the English batsmen either.” MARKED CONTRAST The Lord’s surface was in marked contrast to the one used in Nottingham, which came in for fierce criticism for its placid nature as the first match of the five-Test series petered out to a tame draw. After being presented with a pitch to their liking, England initially failed to grasp the opportunity to make significant inroads into the Indian line-up, with openers Shikhar Dhawan (7) and Murali Vijay (24) the only wickets to fall before lunch. However, four more dismissals in the middle session put the hosts in the driving

knocked back Cheteshwar Pujara’s middle stump after an obdurate 28 from 117 balls. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who raised England’s ire after Anderson was reported for an incident involv-

ing Ravindra Jadeja at Trent Bridge, received a frosty reception from the Lord’s crowd and much to their delight, lasted only 17 balls before being caught by Prior off Stuart Broad for one. Jadeja, also unpopular with the home fans, was trapped lbw by Moeen Ali for three, leaving India in disarray at 128 for six before the tea interval. Stuart Binny (9) was also out leg-before, although, had the decision review system been in use the decision may have been overturned as Anderson’s delivery appeared to be going over the wickets. However, Rahane, in his seventh Test, took advantage of England’s tiring bowling attack and brought up his second Test century with a stab through to the offside boundary off Anderson. He put on 90 with Kumar before the latter, who passed 50 in both innings at Trent Bridge, was bowled by Broad soon after the new ball was taken. ANDERSON SUCCESS The 31-year-old Anderson’s four-wicket haul made him England’s most successful wicket-taker on home soil, surpassing Fred Trueman’s tally of 229, and he also eclipsed Ian Botham (69) by becoming the highest Test wicket-taker at

Lord’s with 72 victims. “I think there is a bit of frustration, especially the last session there with the tail hanging around with Rahane, but you’ve got to give credit to him, the way he played,” all-rounder Ben Stokes said. “It was a really good knock. “But from a positive side, we had them 140 for seven, taking away from today is that we keep knocking their top order over.”

At close, Sri Lanka openers Kaushal Silva (eight) and Upul Tharanga (20) had survived 12 overs to take the hosts to 30 for no loss. Batting at number eight, Duminy completed his wellcomposed 100 not out, including 10 fours, with support from the tail-enders. He reached the mark with a single to square leg off Dilruwan Perera, who had earlier dropped him on 82 at mid-off. Morne Morkel stayed at the crease for 74 balls, scoring a defiant 22, to help Duminy reach his hundred in a ninthwicket stand of 66 runs. Perera accounted for Morkel’s wicket as the batsman went for an expansive drive

and missed the ball altogether, to end with figures of four for 162. The visitors batted to a plan to occupy the crease for as long as possible and wear out the pitch using up 166.2 overs in their first innings. “It’s always pleasing to get three figures in these conditions but more crucial was my batting at seven, and trying to marshal whatever is possible has always been the key for me,” Duminy told reporters at the close of play. “Honestly I wasn’t thinking about my hundred until I got to 80, the partnership was more crucial than anything else and time to extend our batting today. That was what was on top of my mind at the time. An eighth-wicket stand of 75 between Duminy and Vernon Philander frustrated the Sri Lankan bowling attack, which was missing one of their front-line bowlers. Philander defended for al-

most two hours, facing 96 balls for 27, before skipper Angelo Mathews provided Sri Lanka with the only wicket of the afternoon session by trapping him leg-before. “We realise how crucial the first innings is and to try to get as big a total as possible that was the goal,” Duminy said. “Four hundred and fifty is not the biggest but a good start for the first innings “It’s going to be a lot of hard work we know the wicket is pretty flat for the seamers, there is a little bit there for the spinners but it’s probably going to speed up towards day four and five. Tomorrow is going to be a crucial day in setting up the game.” The hosts were handicapped by the absence of paceman Shaminda Eranga, who did not take the field after having eight stitches into the webbing between his right thumb and index finger after his injury on Wednesday.

Katusha team rider Alexander Kristoff reacts as he wins the 185.5-km 12th stage of the Tour de France cycling race between Bourg-en-Bresse and Saint-Etienne, yesterday. (Credit: Reuters/Jacky Naegelen) By Julien Pretot ST ETIENNE France (Reuters) - Norway’s Alexander Kristoff claimed his maiden Tour de France victory when he beat Peter Sagan in a sprint to prevail in dominant fashion on the 12th stage, a 185.5-km ride from Bourg en Bresse yesterday. Katusha rider Kristoff timed his effort perfectly to win with a comfortable margin to leave Slovakian Sagan, who looks set to win the green jersey for points classification, still without a win on the Tour this year. French champion Arnaud Demare took third place and Italian Vincenzo Nibali retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey. “I’ve always dreamt of winning a stage on the Tour de France,” Kristoff, who snatched his major victory when he won Milan-San Remo this year, told a news conference. “It’s the second biggest

win of my career.” A five-man breakaway was reduced to four when Spain’s David de la Cruz went down hard on a bend and pulled out with a suspected broken collarbone. Then they were just two, Dutchman Sebastian Langeveld and Simon Clarke of Australia on their own ahead of a bunch, led by Europcar and Giant-Shimano, who were looking to set up their sprinters for the finale. Europcar played another card, however, with Frenchmen Perrig Quemeneur and Cyril Gauthier attacking to join Clarke after the Australian had shaken off Langeveld. But the peloton, led by Giant-Shimano reined them in with a few kilometres left. GREIPEL CRASHES German Andre Greipel, one of the pure sprinters who had managed to go through the two climbs near the finish, crashed after tan-

gling with Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel and could not take part in the final sprint. The peloton went through Sorbiers, where the late Kazakh rider Andrey Kivilev was buried after he died following a crash in March 2003 during the Paris-Nice race. His death prompted the International Cycling Union (UCI) to implement the mandatory use of helmets in all races. It brought back memories to fellow Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov, now the Astana manager who was Kivilev’s best friend. “It’s a bad memory, but there are also good memories. I remember we arrived in France, in St Etienne, together in 1997, we signed our first contracts together,” Vinokourov told Reuters before the start of the stage in Bourg en Bresse. “Every year I go to Nice to see his son, Leonard.” Europcar sports direc-

FIFA rankings put Germany on top of the world for first time in 20 years (REUTERS) - Germany’s World Cup triumph has seen them rise to the top of the world rankings for the first time in 20 years, FIFA announced yesterday. The 1-0 victory in the final has taken them up one place to top spot, ahead of their opponents in the Brazil final, Argentina, who rise three to second. The Netherlands move up a hefty 12 rungs on the ladder to third after their impressive World Cup third-place finish. Spain have paid the penalty for not progressing from

the group stages in Brazil by dropping from first to eighth place with Colombia, Belgium and Uruguay occupying the places above them. Hosts Brazil, hammered 7-1 by Germany in the World Cup semi-final in the shock of the tournament, drop four places to seventh. England have fallen 10 places to 20th in the list, their lowest position since May 1996, after a dismal World Cup when defeat in their opening two group matches gave them their worst performance in over 50 years.

Anthony doubles in Guyana 8-1 win over T&T SLINGERZ FC striker Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams continues to make light work of his opposition in the Caribbean Cup football tournament in New York, where he scored his 10th goal in just four matches when Guyana defeated Trinidad and Tobago 8-1 last Sunday. In a quest to win their first title at the prestigious event Guyana sit comfortable on top of the Western Zone, winning three of their four games and losing one. Guyana also have the highest goal difference in the tournament (17), scoring 22 and having only five scored against them, showing the team’s all-round quality. Watched by a fair-size crowd at the Thomas Jefferson High School Playfield in Brooklyn New York, contrary to the eventual results of the match, it was Trinidad who opened the scoring when Richard Reynolds

However, Trinidad’s lead was shortlived as Guyana’s leading marksman Abrams got hold of a through pass and easily guided the ball to the back of the net. Two minutes later Hubert Anthony put Guyana ahead

when he deftly cut inside his marker and blasted a rightfooter that gave goalkeeper Ryan Seaton no chance, closing the first half with the Guyanese enjoying a 2-1 lead. In the second half the Trinidadians were the aggressors, but Marlon Benjamin extended the lead for the Golden Jaguars with a driving right-foot volley and in

the space of twenty minutes Guyana scored five more goals to demoralise Trinidad. Hubert Anthony completed his hat-trick, leading goalscorer Anthony Abrams got his second as well as Marlon Benjamin, while Bevon Moseley rounded off the scoring for Guyana. Tallawahs crush Hawksbills to record second win NORTH SOUND, Antigua (CMC) – A fired-up Jamaica Tallawahs continued their winning start to the defence of their Caribbean Premier League crown, when they crushed Antigua Hawksbills by eight wickets here yesterday. Asked to bowl first, the Chris Gayle-led Tallawahs bundled out the hosts for a paltry 96 off 18.3 overs, and then cantered to their target off 14.3 overs, at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. Gayle was at the forefront of the run chase once again, smashing 37 from 31 balls, including three fours

and three towering sixes. He shared an opening stand of 62 off 51 deliveries with Chadwick Walton who was unbeaten on 43 from 34 balls, when victory was achieved. Seamer Carlos Brathwaite was the best bowler with two for 11. The triumph was the Tallawahs’ second straight, after they easily dismissed St Lucia Zouks by seven wickets in Gros Islet last weekend. For the Hawksbills, it was their second loss in as many games following their twowicket defeat at the hands of last year’s losing finalists Guyana Amazon Warriors.

They never seemed up to the challenge yesterday, stuttering and stumbling their way through the innings as they lost wickets regularly. They were undone by man-of-the-match left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori who snapped up three for 13 while speedsters Andre Russell (216) and Jerome Taylor (2-22) were the other wicket-takers. Shacaya Thomas perished as early as the second over, when he was trapped lbw for one with the score on two and captain Marlon Samuels counter-attacked briefly with three fours in 13 from six deliveries before also falling lbw

to Vettori in the third over, at 15 for two. Five balls later with no runs added in the same over, Danza Hyatt fell to Vettori also via lbw, to leave Hawksbills in turmoil at 15 for three. Australians Ben Dunk and David Hussey tried to repair the damage in a 25-run stand but this revival was short-lived. Hussey cracked a four and a six in scoring 15 before seamer Rusty Theron disturbed his leg-stump in the eighth over and Dunk followed in the next over with two runs added, run-out

for 12. Wickets continued to tumble and it was left to Sheldon Cottrell to blast a top score of 21 off 14 balls, with two fours and a six, to get the Hawksbills near the 100-run mark. In reply, the Tallawahs started slowly with just 14 runs from the first three overs but came alive once Gayle launched Samuels over longoff for his first six. Gayle then tore into fast bowler Miguel Cummins in the next over, smashing him for four and then two consecutive sixes to end the

Barbadian’s first over which leaked 22 runs. Brathwaite struck twice in the ninth over with the score on 62, to earn Hawksbills some pride. He had Gayle caught at short-midwicket by Samuels, deceiving the lefthander with a slower ball and then had Jermaine Blackwood caught behind off a lifter without scoring. However, Walton struck two fours and three sixes and kept a level head, to easily see the Tallawahs home, partnered by Adam Voges on 12.
