President Ramotar calls for UN Security Council reform President Donald Ramotar addressing the UN General Assembly

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar is contending that the most important precondition for progress is peace, and at the United Nations’ General Assembly on Thursday he underscored the need for reforms to the body’s Security Council among other calls.

“Many conflicts and potential for conflicts continue unresolved while new threats to global security have risen to dangerous levels…concrete progress in the reform of the Security Council is imperative in order to assure

the continued legitimacy and relevance of this important United Nations organ,” he told the Assembly, which met in New York, United States.

On this note, the Head of State made Guyana’s position clear on the situation in the Middle East, particularly the conflict raging between Palestine and Israel.

“The situation in the Middle East is most disturbing,” he said, “At the heart of this is the great tragedy that is the plight of the Palestinian people.”

He highlighted that international media reports have placed the spotlight on the bombing of an “almost unarmed population” in the Gaza Strip, by one of the world’s most powerful military machines, supported and replenished by even more powerful military forces.

“Guyana calls for the end of the apartheid-like situation that exists in Palestine, where poverty and degradation are weapons used to repress a whole people. The people of Palestine have a right to live with dignity in their own country and the UN must

never compromise on the principle of self-determination,” the President stressed.

Mr. Ramotar also pointed to the continuing wars in Syria and Iraq, describing the occurrences as most distressing.

He said: “They are leading to more extremism and a rapid descent to barbarism.

This has resulted from years of financing and arming of radical forces to promote political objectives.

“We (Guyana) condemn the barbaric and grotesque killing of journalists, humanitarian aid workers and other hostages and the loss of lives of civilians in these conflict areas by the murderous extremists in those countries.”

The President was emphatic in making it clear that Guyana condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

“The situation in Ukraine is another cause for concern.

We must not forget that the two world wars had their origins in Europe. That is why we should exert every effort to bring all the partners to the table for a peaceful resolution. Attempting to secure

Recently, a massive social media campaign laying claim to Guyanese territory came to the attention of many.

The campaign, ‘Esequibo es Venezuela’ (Essequibo belongs to Venezuela), involved thousands of youths from the neighbouring country, as well as loyalists of the nation.

This renewal of the claim to Essequibo is not a new one, but one that has been made in the 1940’s, 1950’s and again officially in 1962.

The group, which has a Facebook and Twitter page, as recent as last October at a seminar at the Zulia University in Maracaibo, Venezu-

ela, whose stated objective, according to a poster, was to inform the general public on the history, validity and legitimacy of the recovery process before the last events that violated it, in addition to jeopardising their sovereignty of the Essequibo territory, which is historically and legally Venezuelan.

The conversation on Twitter features majority support for the move to reclaim Essequibo as Venezuelan territory.

Additionally, with similar conversations on Facebook, this site hosts an application that allows Venezuelans to include their location of residence in Essequibo and leave short messages in support of the reclamation campaign.

Preparations well advanced for Caribbean Week of Agriculture PREPARATIONS for hosting the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) in Paramaribo, Suriname, are well advanced, according to organisers of the event.

CWA starts on Monday, October 6.

Guyana hosted the 12th CWA last October, under the theme “Linking the Caribbean for Regional Food and Nutrition Security and Rural Development.” Last year, the week brought together stakeholders for activities to promote agriculture and agro-industries via policy dialoguing, learning sessions, field visits, workshops, and an exhibition and trade show showcasing the fruits of the sector.

A team of sector stakeholders in Guyana is expected to be represented in Suriname next week.

Additionally, the neighbouring country, on 15 August, launched the 13th edition of the CWA with the introduction of the event’s logo as well as the logo for Suriname’s Agro- Food Event 2014 (SAFE), an exhibition and trade fair that is being held for the first time, and which will coincide with the CWA. The CWA is the Community’s premier agricultural event which will be hosted this year by the Government of Suriname, in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat under the theme “Transforming Caribbean Agriculture Through Family Farming.”

Elaborating on the theme, Suriname’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Soeresh Algoe, said family farming is the

backbone of food production.

“Fostering, uplifting and transforming this institute of family farming should be our main goal when we are thinking about ensuring national and regional food security, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Transforming the institute of family farming will strengthen our production and export base of agricultural produce and therefore contribute to sustainable socio-economic growth of our countries and CARICOM as a whole,” Minister Algoe said.

The CWA, which will be held at the Suriname Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference, Exhibition and Trade Fair complex, will be officially opened on Wednesday, October 8.

During the week, farmers, youth and women in agriculture, policy-makers, experts in the field of agriculture and other stakeholders, will participate in activities aimed at charting the Region’s path in the important sector. The activities include seminars and workshops, a special meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) and forums of regional agricultural organisations such as the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Ministers of Agriculture.

A major event on Wednesday October 8, 2014 is the Meeting of the Alliance

for Sustainable Development of Agriculture and the Rural Milieu ('The Alliance'), which will be chaired by the Hon Saboto Caeser, Minister of Agriculture of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Presentations from successful family farmers in the Region and on Suriname’s approach to family farming will be made.

Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) was conceptualised as a facility to place agriculture and rural life on the front burner of regional integration activities. The CWA enables key decision-makers in the public and private sectors to better acknowledge the importance of agriculture and rural life to the economic, social and environmental stability of the Region. The event also provides an opportunity for major stakeholders in agri-

culture and related sectors to dialogue and forge a common vision for the repositioning of agriculture and the enhancement of rural life.

To ensure that CWA 2014 is a resounding success, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat is working very closely with the Government of Suriname; CARDI; the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA); the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation (CTA); the Caribbean Farmers Network (CaFAN); the Caribbean Agri-Business Association (CABA) and the OECS Commission.

GRO expresses concern over media reports regarding role THE Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), through the General Register Office (GRO) reported via a press release that they are deeply concerned with the views being expressed in the media about its role in providing death returns to Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

The GRO noted that they are committed to its moral support role to GECOM by supplying in a timely manner and on a monthly basis over the years, a list of all registered deaths lodged at the GRO up to August 2014.

The GRO stated that the death return of Arthur Chung, who resided at 49 Bel Air

Gardens, died at 49 Bel Air Gardens on 23rd June, 2008, was sent to GECOM in July 2008 and GECOM has recently so acknowledged.

The GRO remains morally committed to providing via its competent, efficient manual system a monthly return of all registered deaths to GECOM.

Islamic State tightens siege of Syria border town; UK joins coalition (Reuters) - ISLAMIC State fighters tightened their siege on a town on Syria’s border with Turkey on Friday despite U.S. led air strikes aimed at defeating the militants in both Syria and Iraq.

Murders down 18% (Jamaica Observer) THE country has recorded an 18 per cent reduction in murders for the period January 1 to September 24, according to police statistics shared by the Government Thursday.

A total of 714 murders were reported, compared to 871 for the same period last year.

Two Sundays ago, the Jamaica Observer reported that up to Friday, September 12, the murder toll since the start of the year stood at 698 -- 15 per cent less than the 819 recorded for the same period last year.

Thursday, National Security Minister Peter Bunting, while encouraged by the reduction, said the numbers were still too high.

Bunting spoke about the murder figures during an address to the Realtors Association of Jamaica Annual General Meeting in New Kingston.

The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) reported Bunting as saying that if the trend remains at the current pace, although not desirable, there is a high possibility of the murder figure for the calendar year remaining under 1,000.

This, he said, would be the first time in “many, many” years, and would represent a “psychological benchmark,” the JIS reported.

Thursday night, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Crime Glenmore Hinds said he was pleased with the reduction and the general downward trend in all other major crimes.

“However, the fight is far from over, as the criminals are still out there; they are still brazen, as evidenced by the callous murder of young Constable James Grant on Tuesday in August Town,” Hinds said.

“The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) remains resolute and will continue to work to achieve even further reductions,” Hinds added. “I congratulate all the men and women of the JCF for their sterling effort in reducing all crimes.”

The police division recording the biggest decrease in murders was Clarendon with 64, compared to 93 over the same period last year, a reduction of 29.

Local governance in Linden and Region 10 is in a dismal state; it should be noted that APNU controls both governing councils. Why has there not been calls, drives, interventions, etc, for effective local governance? Certainly, even without local elections, this should have been the focus of APNU. Linden and Region 10 continue to suffer at the hands the RDC and the LM&TC. I have recently written about the decision to locate a bar adjacent to a long-standing garbage dump. This and other decisions continue to plague the community.

The corruption within the RDC is endemic!! There are bribes and

kickbacks and passing of incomplete works within the Works Department. The discussions and “debates” within the RDC leaves one wondering if this is the best of Region 10. There is no meaningful consultation with the community.

Local government, ideally, should represent and protect the interest of the local community and individuals. That this representation and protection is not being provided is further evidenced by the lack of action with respect to a sawmill/ lumber yard being constructed in Central Amelia’s Ward. The construction is smack in the middle of a residential area of existing and planned homes.

The IMC claims no knowledge of the construction even though the residents are complaining. This is the same entity that arrives promptly to challenge an extension to a corner shop or a community garden. The RDC also claims no knowledge of

the construction.

The reported owner of the facility openly challenges the community with “who can stop me?”

The EPA, the Agency with the responsibility for permitting lumber yards and sawmills, stated that they could not provide information as to whether an environmental permit has been granted.

Some of the residents who will be directly impacted due to their proximity include a security guard, a minibus driver, a market stall holder and a teacher. These are the common folk who desperately need representation and protection from the local governing councils, and who are left to fend for themselves.

So while APNU continues, correctly, to agitate for local government elections, the question remains what about effective local governance?

World Tourism Day Message

The Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Hon. Mohamed Irfaan Ali ON the occasion of the celebration of World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27th across the world, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce would like to call attention to strides made in Guyana to advance Community Based Tourism (CBT), in keeping with this year’s theme - ‘Tourism and Community Development’.

The purpose of these celebrations is to spread awareness across the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.

The events that mark this day, seek to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in reaching these goals.

The Government has constantly been encouraging its populace to embrace the concept of community tourism, as we are optimistic that it can bring in substantial revenue to boost their economies.

One of the benefits of CBT is that tourism dollars go directly into the communities to assist with development and conservation in the region.

A five–year Hinterland Tourism Development Plan, which was initiated in 2013, focuses on tourism opportunities, economic, social and environmental benefits, culture and heritage preservation, investment opportunities and training within specific areas.

Through marketing, Amerindian villages and other communities across Guyana are promoted as adventure, eco and culture destinations via film and television productions, and through publications such as sport fishing and birding where viewership and readership are wide.

Some communities like the Rewa Eco-Lodge, Maipiama Eco Lodge and Surama Eco Lodge, are owned and managed by villagers, and are model examples of community-based tourism projects, which offers tourists an amazing experience with nature.

Consequently, Tourism becomes a catalyst of social cohesion, going beyond the immediate impact of job creation and its positive economic consequences. We recognise that Tourism plays an integral role in the development of our country, and as Guyana continues to gain international attention through its unique diverse blend of cultures, efforts are being made to expand Community Based Tourism and to ensure that more communities benefit from this drive.

Guyana has also been on the progressive frontier of advancing our eco-tourism product and has been the most outstanding sustainable tourism destination in the Region several years in succession; this year the country received an honourable mention at the CTO Travel Mole awards for Rewa.

World Tourism Day, celebrated every year on 27th September, is a global observance to highlight tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value.

WTD 2014 is being held under the theme Tourism and Community Development - focusing on the ability of tourism to empower people and provide them with skills to achieve change in their local communities.

AG categorically denies any involvement THE Attorney-General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr. Anil Nandlall yesterday, responded to the allegations made by the Alliance for Change (AFC), implicating him, in the allegations of sexual assault that were made against the Speaker of the House, Mr. Raphael Trotman.

The full text of the statement is as follows: “It is with utter shock that I learnt that I am the latest casualty in a long list of persons implicated by the Alliance For Change ( AFC ), in the sexual abuse scandal in which their Founder Leader and Speaker of the National Assembly, the Honourable Raphael Trotman is currently embroiled.”

“I wish to absolutely and categorically deny any involvement in, or connection with , either directly or indirectly, the said sexual assault fiasco.”

“On Tuesday 23 rd September, 2014, i.e. long after the allegations of sexual misconduct against Mr. Trotman were made public, I spoke with Mr. Trotman via telephone . As a result of that conversation, I made certain inquiries of the professional staff at the Attorney -General’s Chambers. Those inquiries revealed the following: 1. Approximately one

week before, Mr. Johnny Welshman , a person, whom to date I have never seen or spoken with, met State Counsel , Ms. Leslyn Noble at the said Chambers ; 2. Ramjattan’s 'buy-out' CGX clinches claim is an invention agreement with - Granger Prospector to resume operations in Guyana

– says there is no evidence to support what he is saying

By Clifford Stanley CGX Energy-the Canadian-based oil and gas exploration company which is focusing on the exploration in the Guyana-Suriname Basin has announced that it has entered into a contract with a marine seismic service company named Prospector to resume exploration of its 100% owned Demerara Block, offshore Guyana.

CGX said that the contract involves Prospector conducting 3D seismic surveys within 3,116.74 square kilometres of the Demerara Block.

The aggregate cost of the surveys will be approximately U.S.$17.9 M with 40% of the costs (or approximately U.S.$M) being paid to Prospector by way of issuance of 15,534,310 common shares and the remainder payable in cash twelve months after the conclusion of the seismic survey, the Company disclosed.

Prior to the subscription, Prospector did not own any common shares and upon closing of the subscription, Prospector will own approximately 16.6% of the issued and outstanding common shares.

The company expects the seismic survey to be completed within approximately 60 days following mobilisation.

Prospector will deploy their modern 12-streamer 3D seismic vessel (known as the “R/V BGP Prospector”) that was specifically constructed for serving the high-end 3D, 4D and wide azimuth marine seismic survey market.

The vessel is outfitted with ION’s DigiSTREAMER seismic data acquisition system. It has a solid gel design that reduces the risk and noise during broad bandwidth data recording.

The Demerara Block is comprised of an area spanning 3,953 km2 in the highly prospective Guyana-Suriname Basin.

The initial phase 1 work commitments are comprised of a 3D seismic survey consisting of a minimum of 1,000 km2 and the associated processing and interpretation.

The 3D seismic survey will cover substantially all of the Demerara Block and will provide detailed information on the reservoir distribution

and structural integrity of the current leads. Ultimately, this 3D seismic survey will allow CGX Energy to better rank its prospects in the Guyana-Suriname Basin and define future drilling locations.

ACCUSATIONS which were levelled against the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) by leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC) that they (PPP) were attempting to “buy-out” Opposition Members of Parliament to vote against the no-confidence motion has been described as an “invention” by Leader of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Brigadier David Granger.

Granger who had only last week made this point that there was “no buying out” of his MPs, reiterated yesterday at his Party’s weekly press conference that Ramjattan’s claim is “an invention” adding that there is no evidence to support his revelations.

The AFC leader last week made the startling revelation that the ruling People’s Progressive Party was attempting to “buyout” three Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to vote against their sponsored no-confidence motion which is expected to be tabled in the National Assembly next month.

Ramjattan had, however, assured that the three MPs who the PPP were attempting to “buy-out” were not aligned to the Alliance for Change and as such defended the integrity of his

party. To this extent, he further disclosed that he has evidence to support the fact that the three MPs are from APNU. Debunking these statements last week, leader of APNU, David Granger, seemingly shocked by this revelation made it known to the media that without a doubt, he is positive that the allegations against his MPs were not accurate. He further noted that measures have been put in place to ensure that no member of APNU falls prey to these allegations if they are indeed true.

Against this backdrop, Granger reassured that Ramjattan’s declarations are an invention and there is no evidence to support his claims. He continued: “No member of APNU has been approached for ‘30 pieces of silver’ and to vote in any way that is not in accordance with APNU’s policy” reiterating once more that he thinks it is a “complete invention.”

The seemingly confident AFC leader yesterday at a press conference once again disclosed that: “It is from deep within the PPP that I got that information…they want that as the option, they don’t have any other option and I thought it best to bring it out to the public.”

However, taking a sudden swing, he told the media that he cannot name the the

MPs. “…I cannot name the names….this is clearly the truth and it has not brought any antagonism between the Alliance for Change and APNU,” he said.

To this extent he continued that: “…APNU has maintained the engagement with me that they have always had…in a couple of days we will be meeting with APNU to deal with the no-confidence motion.”

In response to the allegations, the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) last week issued a statement in which it deemed as “utter rubbish”, the so-called “public revelation” by the Alliance For Change (AFC) leader, Khemraj Ramjattan, that they ( the PPP/C) are attempting to “buy off” three parliamentarians at $30M each to vote against the ‘no-confidence’ motion.

The Party in their statement further noted that it rejects this outrageous allegation and as such, challenges Ramjattan to forthwith disclose, publicly, the names of the three parliamentarians to which he made reference and to further make a full and frank public disclosure of all or any information which he claims he has received in relation to this matter.

Since then, Ramjattan has failed to provide any evidence of his claims and to name either of the MPs who are allegedly being “buyout.”

Works have commenced in several regions and the ministry is currently preparing to roll out the programme in other areas. The ministry will first focus on improving the grounds of cemeteries and clearing residential drains which are overgrown with

The CIIP will directly benefit residents in the 65 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and create employment for more than 1,200 persons.

The clearing exercises commenced in all NDCs and the Anna Regina Township in Region 2 on September 1.

Earlier, her lawyer, Mr. Charles S. Ramson had written the company requesting a sizeable offer, but the company did not go higher than $3,320,000. which the plaintiff considered unacceptable.

The plaintiff contended that the defendant breached the contract of insurance by refusing and or neglecting to pay the plaintiff the entire value of the sum insured, less the deductable.

While the claim which was filed in the Supreme

Court Registry on the 27th day of May, 2014, with a copy in the Registry, waiting to be decided by the Court, counsel for the plaintiff again approached the company.

Repeat offender fined for passport forgery

By Geeta Rampersaud A 52-year-old repeat offender was yesterday fined $60,000 by Magistrate Judy Latchman for forging a passport in his cousin’s name.

Sasenarine Etwaroo pleaded guilty to the charge that said on July 22 at the Central Immigration and Passport Office, Georgetown ,he made a false statement figured to a written declaration that he was Peter Persaud and that he had never held a passport, nor had he ever applied for one.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick told the court that the defendant went to the Central Immigration and Passport Office on July 22 and applied for a passport in the name of Peter Persaud.

On September 25 last, he returned to the Passport Office and enquired about a lost passport.

He was identified by a rank and questioned, whereupon he admitted to applying for a passport in his cousin’s name and was charged.

The unrepresented man begged for the court’s mercy and apologised for the act.

Failure to pay the fine will result in 21 days imprisonment.

Recently, Etwaroo was fined $80,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for similar offences, that is, making an untrue statement on a passport application form and making a false statement.

On July 18 last, he accepted that between November 17 and 30, 2012, for the purposes of procuring

a passport, he knowingly made an untrue statement on a passport application form in favour of himself, stating that he had never owned a passport.

The man also pleaded guilty to making a false statement that he had never previously applied for a passport.

In tears, Etwaroo apologised to the court, accepted responsibility for the act and pledged that it would not happen again. He begged for leniency and indicated to the chief magistrate that he did not want to waste the court’s time.

After listening to his plea, the Chief Magistrate fined Etwaroo $40,000 on each charge with the alternative of one month imprisonment on those previous offences.

Ebola is a global problem, needs global response – President Ramotar tells UN General Assembly

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar is calling for a global response to the Ebola epidemic that is ravaging countries in West Africa.

“We currently face a stark reminder of how fragile global welfare is in the face of singular threats such as the Ebola epidemic,” he told the United Nations’ General Assembly, on Thursday.

According to him, a global problem demands a global response that is prompt. “Make no mistake; this is a global problem that requires an immediate global response many times over what is currently being done,” the President said.

Mr. Ramotar added that the concerted global action that is necessary to address today’s problems can only be achieved with strong multilateralism and through relevant, responsive and more democratic global institutions.

“In our time we must continue the search for new

approaches to many of the global problems that confront us. In today’s interconnected and interdependent world, the destinies of states and peoples are increasingly intertwined,” he charged.

The Head of State also lauded the efforts of Cuba and the United States of America in offering support to those most affected in West Africa.

Additionally, in Guyana, moves are being made to establish an action plan to deal with the Ebola Virus. A wide cross-section of stakeholders, from various organisations, met earlier this month to address this effort – using a draft plan as the basis of their effort.

DRAFT PLAN The draft plan addresses five areas. The first for co-ordination and control will see the activation of the national health emergency committee which will hold regular meetings. This

committee will develop and approve the action plan and work on the constitution of the national rapid response team. It will also establish communication systems and develop targeted communication materials. This material will include an airport advisory in the form of a poster; traveller’s information in pamphlet form; public information; health care provider information.

The committee will also be responsible for the implementation of WHO’s International Health Regulations (IHR) plan including a Situation Room.

The second area of Point Of Entry (POE) will identify all points of entry into Guyana with the possibility of introducing the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) into the country. Trotman will resign if charged

“I will do what is right and in the interest of Guyana if and when that time comes,” the Speaker of the National Assembly and co-founder of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Mr. Raphael Trotman assured yesterday.

His comments were made during a press conference hosted by the AFC, following the sexual abuse allegations, which were levelled against him by 22-year-old Johnny Welchman Jr. The Speaker of the National Assembly, since the allegations were made, has been most empathic in his denial of claims that he sexually assaulted the young man in question. The allegation was first made public via an entry on the popular social media site, Facebook.

There are active investigations and civil proceedings related to the matter which are ongoing.

“I am a patriot. I love my country. I love that I can serve Guyana as Speaker, but I will do nothing that will injure the reputation of the National Assembly or to interfere or impede the business of the house…anything that will detract from the work of the House, I will not be a part of it,” he told reporters at the press conference, which was held at the Georgetown Club.

Trotman explained that his decision not to resign on being faced with the “malicious” allegations is based on “precedent” and advice.

“We have looked at precedent from a country that is

considered to be the holy grail of parliamentary democracy, which is the British House of Commons,” he said, referring to a similar case involving Deputy Speaker of the British House Of Commons, Mr. Nigel Evans.

Evans, last September, stepped down as deputy speaker in order to “robustly” defend himself against charges of sexual offences against seven men, including one count of rape. In April this year, he was cleared of rape and sexual assault.

Trotman said: “Up until the point where charges were not filed against him, he was allowed to remain…we are a member of the body known as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and so have been seeking guidance and doing what is consistent with the norms and practices within the Commonwealth in a matter like this.”

“Otherwise, it would mean that if a person made an allegation against the Chief Justice or the Chancellor, or heaven forbid, against the President himself that they had been assaulted in his office and the police receives a report; would it mean or should it mean that the president needs to demit

office immediately, certainly not.”

The Speaker reiterated his denial of the allegations, assuring that he has never done and will never do anything to hurt a child, whether male or female.

“I have never in my life committed any act of a sexual nature that is illegal. I have never molested any child male or female. I have never, even as counsel, represented a person charged with a similar offence because of my abhorrence of matters of this nature,” he said, in an impassioned manner.

QUESTION OF POLITICAL PLAYS Meanwhile, AFC Executive member, Mr. Moses Nagamootoo, stated that the allegations are an attempt to manipulate the consideration of the no-confidence motion when the National Assembly comes out of recess on October 10.

He said, “The interpretation of the intention of the attack against Trotman is seen in the calls already being made to him to resign. This concoction or allegation against the Speaker was intended to rile the Speaker up. …the intention is clear. It is to derail the no-confidence motion, to create a parliamentary crisis. If you don’t have a speaker you have an uncertainty as to where and how the motion will be discussed.”

This sentiment was first expressed by AFC when the allegations levelled against Trotman were first made public.

In 1966, Guyana and Venezuela signed the Geneva Agreement. This agreement took note of the fact that Venezuela was disputing the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award. While it did not take any position about Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo, it committed Venezuela, Britain and Guyana to ensure that “any outstanding controversy…should (be) amicably resolved in a manner acceptable to both parties.”

The border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana goes back at least to the early 1840s when, soon after its independence from Spain, Venezuela protested that in its growth, British Guiana had made heavy inroads into the Essequibo region, which it claimed as part of Venezuela, since it had officially been

part of the Spanish colony.

The Essequibo (in Spanish, Esequibo) region is nearly sixty percent of modern Guyana, consisting of all its territory west of the Essequibo River.

From the Guyanese perspective, by 1831 the region had become firmly part of the British Empire, and the conflicting claims on this territory were rooted in the fact that the region had changed hands many times in is colonial history, between Spain, France, the Netherlands and Britain. In this account, when Venezuela first stated its claim to the Essequibo region it was simply reviving an older claim that Spain had back when Venezuela was a Spanish colony.

Venezuelan accounts, on the other hand, insist that the Essequibo had always been under control of the Spanish, who had forcefully repelled

British and Dutch settlers. The Venezuelan Constitutions of 1811 and 1830 stated that its territory was the same as that of the colonial administrative entity (Capitanía General of Venezuela) in 1810—which included the Essequibo region. Despite good relations between Great Colombia (of which Venezuela formed part until 1830) and Britain, no effort had been made to officially demarcate the limits between the respective territories. By 1841, in light of the demarcation points proposed by a geographer sent

by Britain, Venezuela started protesting what it saw as gross incursions into its territory, and in 1844, started demanding a final demarcation treaty.

“The United Nations must, therefore, redouble its efforts to assist in the resolution of these issues,” President Ramotar stressed.

The first inkling the public had that the AFC had planned moving a no-confidence motion against the Government was way back in mid-June, when party Vice-Chairman, Mr Moses Nagamootoo, hinted at it.

He did so by way of an article published in the Stabroek News and headlined: “AFC

considering no-confidence motion against Gov’t.” He, however, acknowledged that to do so would require the support of the main Opposition party, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

The AFC finally got its wish on Tuesday, August 5, when APNU Leader, Brigadier (rtd.) David Granger publicly confirmed that his party was fully behind the no-confidence motion.

‘Blood diamond’ experts to review diamond-mining sub-sector

By Clifford Stanley AN international team of “blood diamond” experts is now in Guyana at the invitation of the Government to conduct a peer review of the diamond mining sub- sector with the aim of building confidence that diamonds which are being sold to fuel conflicts in other parts of the world, are not being exported from Guyana.

The visitors are Mr. James Lombe of the World Diamond Council (WDC), Mr. Louis Perron of the Government of Canada and Mr. Paul Roberto Alves

of Brazil.

They are here for one week and their programme includes meetings with regulators and stakeholders in the diamond-mining sub-sector, such as the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), diamond exporters and other agencies such as the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Bank of Guyana.

They will review the processes by which diamonds exported from Guyana are certified, with a view to strengthening the measures stipulated by the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) which seeks

to ensure that diamonds that may be destined for sale for fuelling conflicts do not enter the world market.

Guyana is a signatory to the KPCS and as such is committed to ensuring that any diamond originating from the country does not finance a rebel group or other entity seeking to overthrow a UN-recognised government.

The KPCS stipulates in part that every diamond export must be accompanied by a Kimberley Process certificate and no diamond is to be imported from, or exported to, a non-member of the scheme.

This process restricts diamond revenues to government-approved sources.

Members of the visiting team met with Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud; Commissioner of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission(GGMC) Mr. Rickford Vieira; President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners’ Association (GGDMA) Mr. Patrick Harding, and other stakeholders of the sector yesterday.

They were accompanied

by Mr. Frisco McDonald of the US Embassy of Georgetown.

Minister Persaud told the visitors that diamond production is increasing steadily amid an ongoing thrust for clean and respon-

sible mining.

Diamond output for the period January – August 2014 had increased by 23.14 percent, compared to production for the same period for 2013.

He said that he saw the peer review for the diamondmining sub-sector as timely and anticipated that it will certainly allow Guyana to be more compliant in the trade of diamonds.

Mr. Louis Perron of the Government of Canada told the meeting that Guyana has been receiving positive ratings on its adherence to the KPCS. He said that during the peer review, the team will engage miners in the field and show them how they can contribute to worldwide best practices in the

international diamond trade.

He said: “This review will strengthen the current KPCS safeguards that Guyana already has in place.”

The KPCS has 54 participants, representing 81 countries, with the European Union and its member states counting as a single participant.

KPCS members account for approximately 99.8% of the global production of rough diamonds.

Peer reviews are undertaken at the invitation of the signatory country.

Minister Persaud disclosed that the last peer review of Guyana’s role in support of the KPCS was done in 2004 and the local system was considered one of the most robust processes supporting the scheme.

By Leroy Smith NEARLY 80 boys and girls turned out at the Grove Community Centre Ground on Saturday when the Guyana Police Force officially launched “Grove Kaleidoscope Youth Group.”

The group comprises children of Grove, Craig, and Kaneville.

While the group’s activities will be similar to those being carried out in Tiger Bay, Albouystown and Agricola, the newest formed group will be tailored to accommodate a gathering of much older children.

‘A’ Division Commander, Senior Superintendent Clifton Hicken, and his Deputy, Commander Dion Moore returned to the community on Saturday, and the children were registered for the youth group.

The females will focus on art and craft, along with painting; while the males would be groomed to join the police scouts programme.

Already, the arrangements are being put in place to have would-be scouts trained by the district scouts commissioner before they can actually be part of the national scouting team.

The tie-dying and painting in which the children are expected to participate would be headed by Mrs Indira Hicken, wife of Commander Clifton Hicken. At the end of the programme, the children will stage their own fashion display, during which they are expected to display their pieces.

The programme is being supported by several members of the communities and the police from the district.

Ebola is a global... flight declaration including the health sections and the training of flight attendants among other issues.

The POE personnel will also ensure the examination of flight manifests to identify any possible traveller from infected areas and maintain a register of such travellers.

They will also meet with persons from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority and the Airport Authority for establishing control points.

Posters for arrival areas at the CJIA and Ogle Airports will also be organised. In addition, they will provide outgoing travellers with information and identify port quarantine facilities at both airports and provide all basic equipment and supplies.

POE personnel will also identify and equip ambulances for special transfer of suspected EVD cases.

The third area is clinical preparedness. This will ensure that personnel follow the standard precautions guidelines and implement the infection control plan.

They will also meet with hospitals to identify isolation units and train health workers on infection control.

Workers will also be trained on clinical management of Ebola.

The fourth area regards laboratory work and will ensure testing to ensure that all differential diagnosis diagnostic testing takes place with feedback transferred to physicians. There will also be moves to identify a reference laboratory and establish protocol whilst establishing guidelines for EVD.

The fifth area deals with epidemiology, public health and prevention. This will strengthen the surveillance for febrile illness accompanied by analysis and reports which includes a case definition. Personnel will also define the target audience and conduct briefings for all health workers.

NOT A NEW VIRUS The Ebola virus is not new, but is approximately 40 years old. The epidemic in West Africa holds the record for being the worst outbreak in the recorded history of the virus. The outbreak – which has affected the countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone – now has more than a thousand cases, in which more than half of those are confirmed.

Ebola is transmitted to the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected wild animals such as infected fruit bats, chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, etc.

The virus is spread through humans by direct person to person contact through broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected persons with Ebola signs and symptoms. This virus can also be spread through indirect contact with environments contaminated with such body fluids.

The initial symptoms are sudden fever, headache, sore throat, muscle pain and intense weakness. These

symptoms advance to vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rash and bleeding (internal and external).

The virus attacks the body quickly, and causes the infected individual to be sick in as little as two days but can take up to 21 days for the symptoms to show up.

Protection against the disease can be done by washing hands regularly with soap and water. Hands carry lots of germs that cause diseases. Avoiding direct contact with body fluids (urine, tears, saliva, sweat, semen, vaginal fluid, blood, etc). Using protective clothing such as gloves, etc, when handling urine, stool or attending to wounds. Semen and vaginal fluids also contain virus that can cause Ebola and other diseases. Avoid sexual intercourse with a sick person or a person recovering from EVD for at least three months. Avoid contact with or handling of wild animals, alive or dead or their raw or undercooked meat.

Avoid unprotected handling of contaminated corpses. If you have fever, seek medical attention – fever is one of the early indications of viral infections.

There is no specific treatment and there is no vaccine currently available for humans. It is just supportive care. Pain relievers and fever medicines are recommended.

Though more concentrated in parts of Central and West Africa, history shows that cases of infection have popped up in other countries as well.

US-based Guyanese to sponsor Under-19 batsman Shimron Hetmeyer GUYANA and West Indies U-19 opening batsman Shimron Hetmeyer, recently was the beneficiary of a sponsorship deal by overseas-based Guyanese Krishna Appiah of The Bronx, New York and Ravi Etwaroo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cricket Zone and Trophy World of Castle Hill, Bronx, New York.

The sponsors, who have been following Hetmeyer’s development, have donated a cricket bat and gloves as an initial gesture.

The donation was made possible through the intervention of Berbice inter county cricketer, and captain of the police Berbice Division cricket team, Station Sergeant Michael Newland.

Newland told the Berbice Media that he had been

following Hetmeyer’s career over the years, and is impressed by his discipline and work ethic.

Additionally, he sees a bright future for the lad who had lacked sponsorship although he has displayed great potential.

Consequently, Newland took the initiative to contact the sponsors, who readily agreed to assist by sending the much-needed items which were handed over to the overjoyed youth.

indicated that one major concern of participants and patrons was the entertainment and loud music. The entertainment will now start from 21:00 hrs to midnight giving the booth holders ample time to conduct business and be able to express and explain to the patrons their products and produce.

“We have also discussed with persons to regulate the volume of their music and our committee will also be monitoring this,” Ali said.

Another main addition to this year’s event is for the first time the GuyExpo Committee is partnering with local transportation providers to set up a transportation service that will facilitate easier access to and from GuyExpo every day for those residents living in outlying areas. Those areas are Berbice (Rose Hall, Bath Settlement and N e w A m s t e r d a m ) , We s t Demerara (Parika, Tuschen, Vreed-en-hoop, Belle West) and Mahaica. There will also be an official taxi service at the exhibition site with regulated fares.

Manatee experts conduct assessments to create management plan

– efforts ongoing to improve the manatee’s care, feeding, and enclosure conditions Following months of negotiations, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, through the Protected Areas Commission

(PAC), recently hosted a team of international manatee experts at the National Park and the Zoological Park.

The Team was headed

by Dr. Nataly Castelblanco-Martínez from the U.S.-based Oceanic Society and the Co-chair for the IUCN South American Sirenian (Manatee)

Specialist Group, and included Mr. Boris Lerebours, a Manatee breeding and re-introduction expert from the National Parks of Guadeloupe.

The team conducted initial assessments of the populations and their enclosures at the National Park and Botanical Gardens, using sonar and visual observations.

Water samples were also collected and a series of tests are currently being carried out.

The initial findings of the assessment revealed that the animals are demonstrating increased reproductive activity, with five very young calves being recorded and breeding behaviour being observed during the assessment.

The team also noted that Guyana is the only country in the world that has maintained a captive population or reproducing manatees for over 100 years. Descended from animals originally brought into captivity in the late 1800s, the collection of West Indian manatees at the Park and Gardens has long been part of Guyana’s natural and cultural landscape.

T h e PA C i s n o w working with the team to organise a much more extensive follow-up assessment. This will aim to tag each individual animal with a microchip, conduct full health assessments, including blood sampling, establish the ages and number of

males and females in the population, and carry out a genetic analysis of the population to determine parentage and the level of inbreeding. The results of this upcoming activity will then be used to create a management plan for the population, and inform the PAC’s on-going efforts to improve the manatees' care, feeding, and enclosure conditions.

The PAC will also use the assessment to d ev elo p a co n t ro lled captive breeding programme, and a linked conservation plan for Guyana’s wild manatees, including those observed in the Shell Beach Protected Area.

Once these programmes are in place, efforts will be made to acquire captive bred or rescued manatees from other zoos and aquariums, in order to bring new genes into the local population, and reduce the chance of serious genetic diseases that can result from inbreeding. The ministry, through the PAC, has been seeking the assistance and partnership of a number of international organisations involved in manatee conservation, with this visit being the first activity resulting from these engagements.

Key decision-makers tackle key issues affecting Region’s response to HIV

KEY decision-makers of the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) met this week for a series of strategic meetings vital to the region’s continued response to HIV. Notable achievements of the meetings were the endorsement of the Caribbean Regional Strategic Framework (CRSF), 2014-2018 and the endorsement of the next steps in the process of applying for a valuable Global Fund Grant under the New Funding Model, according to a press release from the CARICOM Secretariat at Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown.

The Priority Areas Coordinating Committee (PACC), the Executive Board of PANCAP and the Regional Coordinating Mechanism (RCM) collaborate to guide the work across the Caribbean by the Ministries of Health, faith-based organisations, community groups and others committed to reducing the spread and impact of HIV. The CRSF serves as the primary guiding document to this work. The latest version of the CRSF, 2014-2018 was endorsed by the Executive Board of PANCAP. The CRSF 20142018 was drafted through a series of discussions with member states and organisations, and is based on the data and research gathered from across the region, taking into account global developments, the release stated.

It includes six priority areas, as well as a clear plan and defined activities. There is a focus on reducing stigma and

discrimination as a way of halting the spread of HIV by providing access to health services to all people regardless of their age, gender, sexual orientation, race, citizenship, ethnicity or any other factor.

The Global Fund continues to be a key supporter of the work of PANCAP. During the meeting, the status of the current PANCAP Global Fund Round Nine Grant - Phase Two was shared. PANCAP is now applying for a three-year grant to focus on human rights issues.

Earlier this year, the release said, an expression of interest was submitted to the Global Fund and following a review, PANCAP was invited to submit a concept note. The meetings this week provided an opportunity for the leadership of PANCAP to contribute to the regional dialogue process, a key requirement of the New Funding Model. The regional dialogue with a wide cross-section of stakeholders, including key populations, will continue over the next two months, The Caribbean Regional Network of People Living with HIV (CRN+) provided an update on its achievements and priorities. The establishment of a policy and strategy working group (PSWG) on stigma and discrimination tasked with guiding PANCAP’s efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination across the region was endorsed, and was scheduled to meet for the first time on Wednesday.

Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Caribbean programme provided an update on the recent PEPFAR developments in the Caribbean. PEPFAR will be shifting its focus to countries with high HIV prevalence and high disease burden and to activities with key populations in the Caribbean.

Former NZ all-rounder Cairns charged with perjury

LONDON, England (Reuters) - Former New Zealand captain Chris Cairns was charged in a north London police station on Thursday with perverting the course of justice.

The charges stem from a 2012 libel action he brought against Lalit Modi, the former boss of the Indian Premier League.

The court ruled in Cairns’s favour and ordered Modi to pay damages.

“We can confirm that we have authorised police to charge Chris Cairns with one count of perjury, which arises from a libel trial held in the United Kingdom in March 2012,” the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement.

Perjury carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years in Britain.

All-rounder Cairns, who played 62 Test matches and more than 200 one-day internationals, flew to Britain in May to be interviewed by police and the sport’s anticorruption officials in a separate investigation into allegations of matchfixing.

He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Former New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent was banned for life in July from all cricket after admitting to match-fixing in games in England.

Miffed Younus offers to step aside from Tests KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Former Pakistan captain and senior batsman Younus Khan has offered to step aside from the Test squad after being axed for next month’s one-day series against Australia in the United Arab Emirates.

Younus, 36, was recalled to the 50-over side for the August ODI series in Sri Lanka and played in the first game before returning home due to the death of his nephew.

“I played just one match and

returned home due to the death of my nephew. So, on what basis the selectors have dropped me or say I am not fit for this format?”

Younus told reporters.

Younus, who has played 91 Tests and 254 One Day Internationals, said he was ready to vacate his place in the Test side as well if the selectors were serious about rebuilding the side. “But what happens if they are not able to do this? Then will they be sacked?” he asked.

Chief selector Moin Khan had earlier said Pakistan were looking at fresh talents ahead of next year’s World Cup but Younus would be considered for the Test matches against Australia.

“I have always played with respect and pride for Pakistan. But I don’t like the way they have treated a senior player. If they had called me and told me that they wanted me only for the Tests I would have agreed,” Younus said.

“If they had told me play one match and retire, I would have done that.”

Younus said he still wanted to play in the World Cup as he was fit and in form.

Younus said greats like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Javed Miandad were also treated badly and shunned out forcibly.

Carter ton not enough as Tridents suffer Super Over heartbreak

MOHALI, India (CMC) – Jonathan Carter’s brilliant, unbeaten hundred was in vain as critical errors in the field proved Barbados Tridents undoing, as they went down to Cape Cobras in a nerveracking Super Over in the Champions League Twenty20 here yesterday.

The left-handed Carter romped his way to a T20 career-best 111 not out, an innings that powered Tridents to a competitive 174 for eight off their 20 overs and helped them overcome a terrible start and middle order collapse at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

He faced 68 balls and lashed ten fours and five sixes, adding an all-important 75 for the third wicket with opener Dilshan Munaweera whose 42 came from 21 balls, to lift Tridents from the doldrums of seven for two in the third over.

With Jeevan Mendis the only other batsman to reach double figures with ten, Carter carried the Tridents innings admirably as wickets tumbled around him.

He put on 27 for the fourth wicket with James Franklin (3) and added another 42 for the

fifth wicket with Mendis.

His century surpassed his previous best of 61.

In reply, opener Hashim Amla was amazingly gifted three lives en route to a top score of 59, as Tridents fluffed their lines at key points of the game.

He added 56 for the first wicket with Richard Levi who scored 39 and another 43 for the second wicket with Omphile Ramela who got 14 - partnerships that propelled Cobras to 99 for one in the 11th over.

Seemingly running away with the game, Cobras were pegged back by a brilliant spell from leg-spinner Mendis who finished with four for 27.

Three quick wickets for 17 runs in the space of 14 balls led to a slump and left the South African outfit requiring 13 from the last over.

Captain and seamer Rayad Emrit restricted Cobras to 12 runs but Tridents squandered a golden opportunity to win the game of the last ball.

Eights clubs in Pomeroon receive balls to develop their cricket

... T20 cricket competition launched THE POMEROON Sports Committee donated balls to eight cricket clubs in the Upper and Lower Pomeroon last Monday at Xenon Hotel Boardroom in Charity, prior to the launching of the Norbert Alphonso and Hassan Rahim Memorial T20 Cricket Competition.

According to a press release, the balls were purchased for the clubs using the $50 000 grant the Pomeroon Area Committee received from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) in July this year.

The GCB started a countrywide outreach programme, donating money and necessary materials to the various regions in an effort to develop cricket in the areas and each of the eight Area Committees in Essequibo received $50 000 while

However, Engelbrecht, who finished 19 not out and Justin Kemp, 12 not out, held their nerve in an unbroken 31-run, sixthwicket stand to set up a grand finish.

BCB/BBC semi-finals bowl off tomorrow … Carib Beer T20 starts today

FIRST Division cricketers in the Ancient County of Berbice are in for a busy weekend from today, as several matches in two different competitions are scheduled for the next two days, including the Berbice Cricket Board/Berbice River Bridge Company 50 overs semifinals.

The action will commence today with the opening round of matches in the BCB/ Ansa McAl Limited Carib Beer T20 competition, with five first-round matches.

This competition will be played on a round-robin basis in three zones, namely West Berbice, Canje/ New Amsterdam/East Bank and Corentyne and after the preliminary rounds the top two teams from each zone will advance to the play-offs.

Paul and Sankar offer resistance as Development X1 suffer innings defeat

By Calvin Roberts TALENTED 17-yearold all-rounder Kemo Paul and his national Under-19 teammate Steven Sankar yesterday foiled Demerara’s attempt to mop up the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Developmental XI early, in their second round GCB senior Inter-county four-day matchup at the Everest Cricket Club ground.

Resuming the day on 38 for 5, after starting their second innings in search of 185 to make their opponents bat again, the Developmental XI offered resistance right up to 10 minutes in the extra halfhour taken by Demerara, before they folded at 11:40hrs for 169, to lose by an innings and 16 runs, with Paul hitting 73 and Sankar an unbeaten 33.

Scores: Developmental XI 154 and 169; Demerara 338.

Paul, who resumed the day on 8, shelved his ultra defensive mode that he displayed the previous day, by hitting Raj Nannan for three fours in the second over of the day’s play, pushing his side to 55 for 5 before he lost his overnight partner Kemol Savory (9, 2x4) and Yatesh Dhanpaul

Wintz at long off, in his attempt to hit Khan for his fourth successive four - a shot that was not expected from a player who recently returned from England where he played as a semiprofessional.

Enter Sankar to the fray, with which came Paul’s aggressive attitude and he

(Paul ) took the attack to the bowlers, hitting Khan for his second six to post his 50 from 70 balls with six fours and two sixes while batting for 110 minutes, following which he hit Khan for another four to wide long on.

The 26-year-old Carmichael who had a boundary-studded 20 (5x4), opened his account with a four off Paul Wintz and followed it up with another off the same bowler in his following over, before he hit Demerara’s first-innings centurion and national legspinner Amir Khan for a hat-trick of fours in the 29th over.

In-between his exploits, Paul also got a six off Khan over midwicket, before Carmichael holed out to

Steven Sankar supporting role, Paul took the attack to the Demerara bowlers, walking down the wicket to Wintz and hitting him through mid-off with ease for his ninth four, followed by another through extra cover.

At the other end, Sankar joined the party with a four of his own, off Wintz, before Zaheer Mohammed induced Paul to hole out to Khan at long on for 73 which took him 88 balls to accumulate as he batted for 185 minutes while hitting 10 fours and two sixes.

No Windies coach likely until new year, says Cameron KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – West Indies Cricket Board president Dave Cameron says the search for a new men’s team coach will be done with the greatest of prudence, and does not expect a replacement to be named before the new year.

The post of West Indies head coach was made vacant last month when Ottis Gibson was sacked just days before the start of the oneday and Test series against Bangladesh.

And though West Indies face tough away tours to India and South Africa later this year, Cameron said the WICB would not attempt to rush the process.

“We believe, in terms of

a replacement for the coach we have to take our time to ensure we have the right person in place. You know, if it was as easy as just appointing a coach and West Indies cricket team would get better, then I think we would spend any amount of money that we have,” Cameron told TVJ Sports here.

“But I think we have to be very, very careful about who we appoint, as we’re looking for that person to take the team on the journey on the next couple of years.

“So we’re going to spend our time. We have had a couple of interests and we will put them all together and decide. Hopefully we will have somebody in place within the new year.”

In Gibson’s absence, team manager Sir Richie Richardson was given responsibility for the Bangladesh series, with

assistant coaches Stuart Williams and Andre Coley along with bowling consultant Sir Curtly Ambrose forming the management team.

They are expected to continue working with the team in the interim but Cameron said he hoped that they too would apply for the vacant post.

“I’m assuming that all of those guys, if they’re ambitious, that they would all throw their hats in the ring and we will evaluate everybody,” Cameron said.

“I’ve heard talks of Gus Logie. I would want everybody to be interested and we would evaluate everybody as to who is the best person to take us on the journey.”

After Paul’s dismissal, Sankar shelved his defensive attitude and went into overdrive with three fours in two overs off Wintz, before Khan closed off the innings by trapping Niall Smith lbw for 2 at 11:40hrs, leaving Sankar unbeaten at the other end on 33 (57 balls, 4x4).

Despite going for a flurry of runs as the Developmental XI’s last five wickets added 131 from the 29.4 overs sent down by Demerara, Paul ended with 4 for 69, Khan 2 for 33 while there was a wicket each for Mohammed, Nannan, Christopher Barnwell and Gavin Moriah, who was only used for three overs.

Following today’s rest day and two more tomorrow and Monday, the third and final round will commence on Tuesday with Demerara facing Essequibo at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground while Berbice and GCB Developmental XI will do battle at Wales.

Bishoo, Edwards and Miller in West Indies-A squad LEG-spinner Devendra Bishoo has been named in the West Indies-A squad that will tour Sri Lanka next month.

Batsman Kirk Edwards and left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, who were dropped from West Indies’ ODI squad that will play in India in October, also feature.

Bishoo, 28, last played in the A-team in June 2012.

He had played 11 Tests and 13 ODIs in 2011 and 2012 - including debuting in oneday internationals during the 2011 World Cup - but then his form fell away.

GCC honours its latest Test player

By Calvin Roberts THE SECOND and final Dhaka Bank Test match between the West Indies and Bangladesh saw not only dependable West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul surpass the late Sir Donald Bradman with the number of Test centuries scored, but also Chanderpaul’s Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) teammate Leon Rayon Johnson.

Many Waters to wear the maroon cap in a game the West Indies were playing for the 500th time, making him the 300th Test player in the process.

In recognition of this remarkable achievement, the executive members of the renowned GCC, which is the oldest club in the Caribbean at 156 years old, last night honoured Johnson who leaves this morning for Barbados before going on to India with the West Indies team, for his ascendancy to the Test team..

including the club’s president Dr Lionel Jaikarran, secretary of Guyana Cricket Board Anand Sanasie and Marketing Manager Raj Singh, Retired Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil Kennard and other special invitees and club members.

In his feature remarks, Jaikarran reminisced on the days when the 27-year-old Johnson, as a 12-year-old back then, joined the club in 2000 under the tutelage of coach Harold Dhanraj, from where he went on to play for Guyana at the Under-15 level.

“His early career would

have seen him play for the national Under-15 team, from where he went on to play for the senior team as a 16-year-old, following which he captained Guyana and West Indies Under-19 teams in 2006.

Johnson later played for the West Indies ODI team in 2008, captained Guyana’s senior team this year and recently opened the batting for the West Indies in the second Dhaka Bank Test match against Bangladesh in St Lucia a couple weeks ago,” said Jaikarran.

He continued, “Today at the age of 27, Leon is

embarking on a new journey and what an honour it is for the GCC that Leon joins the long list of distinguished cricketers such as Kenny Wishart, Steven Camacho, Alvin Kallicharran, Carl Hooper, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Reon King, Neil McGarrell and the late Ivor Mendonca,, just to name a few.”

“Leon, you were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self and to do it courageously, so know this, my friend, when you walk out on the ground thousands of miles away from your

club, you may feel alone, cherish the thought we will be watching you, rubbing the sleep out of our eyes at 03:00hrs, cheering every stroke you play and crying blood when the call goes against you, but we will be proud as a peacock when you make your maiden ton.”

Jaikarran, along with former club president Paul Chan-a-Sue, Richard Jodha on behalf of Les Ramalho and Vishaul ‘Cheesy’ Singh, all echoed words of encouragement to the lefthanded batsman, who in his acknowledgement speech, gave heartfelt thanks, before he was named a Honorary member of the Club.
