Puma mauls three-year-old girl

A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl was mauled by a puma yesterday, leaving her in an unconscious condition. The badly wounded child, named Jasmine Joseph, is from Isseneru Village in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and was near her home, about 08:00 hrs, when the animal dragged her some 60 feet into the bush.

Fortunately, she was rescued by persons who heard her screams and shot the attacker dead. She, however, suffered severe injuries to her head and face as a result of the vicious attack. Plans were being made for the injured girl to be air-dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on yesterday afternoon. (Alex Wayne)

Public Works Ministry completes demolition of BM Soat ‘illegal’ refuses to give up gov’t structures - As businessman reserve as per court order By Leroy Smith PUBLIC Works Ministry workers using an excavator yesterday demolished a fence and two concrete structures that were alleged to have been illegally erected at the BM Soat Auto Sales show yard at Success, East Coast Demerara. The demolition came three days after that ministry had signalled its intention to destroy the structures consequent upon the Government of Guyana, through the Works Ministry, winning judgement in the High Court in a matter involving ownership of a particular piece of land contended by the auto sales dealer, and the High Court specifically instructing the auto sales dealer to demolish the fence and all other objects or structures which sit on Government’s reserves and are preventing the Works Ministry from proceeding with its road expansion project. The Works Ministry had moved last Tuesday to effect demolition of the impeding structures, including the fence; but the auto sales dealer had stymied the move by parking brand new vehicles in such a strategic way along the fence as to prevent the Works Ministry machinery from going into action. Nevertheless, Works Ministry personnel, under direction of their senior operatives and accompanied by a heavy police presence, returned to the scene

As to the family’s subsequent moves, the man said they will continue to fight the issue in the court, since they have transport for the land that the government is claiming as its reserve. As the Works Ministry team moved to execute the court order yesterday, the auto dealer’s workers busied themselves in removing items from the structures which housed the sales office and an ice cream parlour.

Despite GPL assurances, Essequibo blackout woes continue Editorial

Is there a rekindling of the Cold War? EVEN though the Cold War has ended, it appears that the objectives of the West during that era have not changed and what is unfolding in The Ukraine supports this view; because the EU supported by the US has unleashed a covert and overt campaign to prevent that country from establishing closer ties with Russia and to have it in the orbit of the West. And we know why. In his article, “The Battle for Ukraine”, Stephen Lendman points out: “Ukraine matters. It’s strategically located and it’s in Europe’s geographic centre, and it borders seven countries. After Western/Central Russia, it’s Europe’s largest country territorially. It’s resource rich.” Former US National Security Adviser Zbgniew Brezinksky once said: “Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be an empire; but with Ukraine suborned and then subordinated, Russia automatically becomes an empire.” According to Lendman, “If Ukraine allies with Western Europe, Moscow would be significantly weakened geopolitically. The battle for Ukraine continues. Washington’s dirty hands are involved. Young militants were recruited and were paid to protest. Radical nationalists joined them. Ukraine’s future is at stake.” This, of course, is an old familiar script, especially during the official Cold War days. In the 1960s, we experienced this scenario right here in Guyana and so many other countries did as the US and its allies strove to protect “their interests” and to “save the world from communism and preserve democracy.” During that time, the US’s various agencies including the CIA in collaboration with their local allies covertly and overtly fomented a political crisis through terror, sabotage and strikes aimed at removing the PPP government led by Dr Cheddi Jagan. However, there’s been a worrisome development involving the government and the US Ambassador here in which the latter has made it clear that regardless of whether the former agrees with a project about strengthening the capacity of parliamentarians and improving the functioning of Parliament, it will be implemented. The government explained that its objection to the project was based on the fact that it was not involved in its formulation. The US Ambassador responded that the government was engaged for a long period with respect to the project. The Ambassador should know only too well that being engaged is much different from having an input into the formulation of a project. What the Ambassador’s position amounts to is, it’s the US way or no other. It is like going to someone’s house and dictating how it should be arranged and what should be cooked, etc. This sort of behaviour borders on interference in our internal affairs and a violation of our sovereignty which cannot be tolerated. Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, has made it clear that the behaviour of the Ambassador could have serious consequences. “At this stage the issue is the US Ambassador’s apparent contempt for the Cabinet of Guyana, an act that

Perhaps, the most serious impediment is the huge amount of blackouts for this year which we in Essequibo face. While it is true that GPL and the Wartsilla power plants are facing a full range of unprecedented challenges and a desperate time,GPL will not get far without the assistance of skilled and professional engineers. The best prescription for economic slowdowns is to throw money

in GPL; every megawatt of power lost creates unstable economic growth, and Region 2 depends on GPL’s ability to turn to sustainable and competitive energy. Years of no maintenance to these Wartsilla engines and damage now pose a real and immediate threat to the future of GPL’s energy stability. The fact is, the power company has been producing less electricity than it’s been producing for years now. Not only has demand been soaring for more electricity because of the many new housing schemes, the region’s growing economic prosperity will take a lot more energy from every possible source. The energy industry needs to get more

from existing sources while continuing to search for new reserves. GPL must continue to improve power efficiency and government needs to create energy policies that promote economically and environmentally sound development. Consumers must demand and be willing to pay for some of these solutions, while practising conservation efforts on their own. Inaction is not an option. But if everyone works together, we can balance the equation. We’re taking some of the steps needed to get started, but we need GPL’s help to get the rest of the way. MOHAMED KHAN

Having cleared the air, let me say happy riddance to Ambassador Brendt Hardt. From the very beginning of his much too long sojourn in our country, the American diplomat has been guilty of attempting to dabble in

our domestic/political affairs. He has abandoned diplomacy and ignored the long cherished and traditional protocol internationally established and faithfully observed by all serving diplomats stationed in host countries. The current absurdity being displayed by Ambassador Hardt in stating (according to Stabroek News) that he is disregarding the decision of cabinet not to approve

a dubious project on a vague idea of agreement with local politicians and improvements of current governance is most unpalatable. Indeed, Dr. Luncheon is correct in describing the action of Mr Hardt as an affront to Guyana’s sovereignty and “greatest disrespect and abuse of his diplomatic presence”. In plain words, his presence in Guyana is unacceptable, happy riddance.

DREADFUL NEWS The dead man‘s mother, Savitree (only name given), who was in shock on hearing the dreadful news, said her son had left her home around 10:00 hrs and told her he would be back just now. She said it is hard to believe those were his last words to her. The devastated woman, who has another son and a daughter in the United States, said she had already baked Christmas cake for her children and was about to bake a chicken when she received the shocking news of her son’s tragic death. She said all her Christmas plans are now shattered like a broken mirror which cannot be picked up. Her son was a carpenter contractor, like his father, and a married father of a little boy who would have celebrated his first birthday on Boxing Day. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the Court that, around 14:15 hrs, the defendant was the driver of the motor vehicle on the western side of Shiv Chanderpaul Drive and failed to stop at the intersection and, as a result collided with a motor van. The prosecutor said, as a result, the van hit the concrete culvert and Thompson, who was seated in the left front seat of the vehicle, suffered injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.

THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extends its deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of the late Richart Hart who passed away in the United Kingdom at the advanced age of ninety-six on December 21, 2013. Hart was a close friend of Dr. Jagan and the PPP and played a key role in the rise of trade union militancy not only in his country Jamaica but in the Caribbean as a whole. Indeed, Hart was one of the guiding lights in the struggle for national liberation and from the clutches of imperialist domination in the region, the PPP noted in a statement yesterday. He became a natural ally of Dr. Jagan and the PPP and one of those Caribbean luminaries in the working class struggle who inspired Dr. Jagan in the struggle for national liberation and for a better quality of life for the Guyanese people and for that matter for the Caribbean working class as a whole. Hart’s relationship with Dr. Jagan started even before the formation of the PPP. During a meeting of the West Indian Conference at the Georgetown Town Hall in 1945, Dr. Jagan met for the first time persons whom he described as “stalwarts whom he admired” among whom was Richard Hart and Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow. Out that meeting was born the Caribbean Labour Congress in 1946 of which he served as its General Secretary. In the same year the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) was formed with founding leaders Cheddi Jagan, Janet Jagan, HJM Hubbard and Ashton Chase. The PAC was aimed at raising the political and ideological consciousness of the Guyanese working class. Those were the days when the Cold War was raging intensely and several progressives and leftists, inculding Dr. Jagan and Richard Hart became targets of the anti-communist witchhunt. Buckling under pressure from the United States, several Caribbean leaders conspired to have Hart removed as General Secretary of the Caribbean Labour Congress in 1950 because of his militancy and pro-labour stance. Ironically, it was under the Norman Manley leadership of the 1951-52 period that saw the Jamaica leftist-led TUC being forced to withdraw from the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and the expulsion of left-wingers, the so-called 4-H’s (Richard Hart, Ken Hill, Frank Hill and Arthur Henry). In addition, under the leadership of both Norman Manley and Grantley Adams the militant leftist Caribbean Labour Congress (CLC) of which leftists Richard Hart was General Secretary and Billy Strachan was Secretary (London Branch) was disbanded. As noted by Dr. Cheddi Jagan in his book ‘The Caribbean: Whose Backyard?’ the betrayal of the Caribbean national liberation movement was fully demonstrated during the 1953 crisis in British Guiana when the social democratic leadership applauded the bipartisan imperialist policies and actions of both the Labour and Conservative parties in Britain. Incidentally, it was during the same period the PPP was formed with Cheddi Jagan as Party Leader and Janet Jagan as General Secretary. After the PPP was re-elected in the elections of 1962, Hart was invited by Dr. Jagan to edit the Party’s newspaper, the Mirror which he did until 1965. The PPP, as is well known, was engineered out of office by Anglo-American vested interests in the 1964 elections because of its pro-working class leaning. The PPP said Hart has undoubtedly made his mark on the political and trade union landscape in the Caribbean for which he will be long remembered. In addition to his role as a trade unionist/politician, Hart was also a prolific writer and the author of several books. May his soul rest in peace!

THREE men appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday to answer a robbery under arms charge. Howard Rambharose, 21, of Lot 6 Meadow Bank; Rajesh Singh of Lot 212 Laing Avenue and Alastair Naughton, of Phase Two, East La Penitence, all of Georgetown, were not required to plead to the charge that said on Friday, December 20, also in the city, being armed with a gun, they robbed Mahesh Chetranie of $17,250,000, property of Shamdas Kirpalani. Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said Singh was employed at Kirpalani on Regent Street and is responsible for depositing money at the Bank of Baroda. That day, he and the store manager Chetranie uplifted the money and boarded the company vehicle to make the deposit at the bank. While in the vicinity of Avenue of the Republic, they were stuck up by Rambharose and Naughton, who relieved them of the cash and made good their escape. The prosecutor objected to bail for the trio, citing the seriousness of the crime and said and if granted pre-trial freedom the accused will not return. However, attorney-at-law Mr. Nigel Hughes, representing Singh, argued that his client has been working with Kirpalani for the past six years and depositing money. Hughes said on the day in question, Singh was questioned by a police officer at Brickdam station and was arrested from his workplace Christmas Day. The lawyer complained that Singh was beaten by two particular officers, Narine and Caesar, with a police baton and there were signs of blood 24 hours after and visible black and blue marks on his neck but he was not taken to seek medical attention. The chief magistrate asked the prosecutor to investigate why the accused were not taken to seek medical attention and the allegation made by the defence counsel. Hughes said that Singh’s mother and daughter were also locked up and abused from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. Other attorney-at-law Mr. Clyde Forde represented Rambharose and, together with Hughes, made bail applications for their clients.

Uprooted tree stalls vehicular traffic at Mahaicony

A LARGE flamboyant tree which was uprooted and fell onto the roadway at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, on Boxing Day, caused vehicular traffic to be stalled for hours Thursday night. It happened about 21:00 hrs after rain had fallen almost the entire day, causing the soil around the tree to become very wet and loose. Traffic was backed up for miles and some persons, who were on their way to Timehri Airport were stuck for more than one and a half hours until assistance was sought from the Regional Administration. Two chainsaws were acquired and the huge tree was cut into small pieces and removed from the roadway, allowing traffic to flow freely. But that was not before a utility pole came crashing down on a car, sending the occupants and those nearby scampering for safety after electricity sparks flew from the fallen post. Many persons were trapped on the roadway until the debris was cleared. Officials of the Regional Administration were not available for comment yesterday as they were said to be out in the field working.

Along the route to his camp, he was attacked and robbed by Freeman and the body of the victim was found the following day with a wound to the neck. The prosecutor added that police ranks from the area conducted investigations which led to the arrest of Freeman and, subsequently, he admitted, under caution, to robbing the deceased of $19,000 and killing him in the process. The case was transferred to the Matthews Ridge Court, for February 3, 2014.

An autopsy on the teenage girl who died after eating a meal of pepperpot and bread at her home Monday last revealed that her death was due to her choking on a piece of bread, the girl’s father Mr. Godfrey Erskine said yesterday. He said the doctor had informed him that the girl choked on a piece of bread which got into her lung and caused her to be unable to breathe resulting in her death. Ronita Erskine popularly known as ‘Pinky’ took ill at her home at West Ruimveldt and died before receiving medical attention moments after she had finished a lively and animated conversation with her father and had settled down to watch her favourite video cartoons. Ronita was a student at the Gifted Hands Learning Centre. Her mother Mrs. Susan Erskine is an employee of the Guyana Chronicle. Her father had recounted the moments before the girl collapsed while eating a meal early Monday morning. He said that he had given her a meal of pepperpot and bread

He rushed back upstairs to see what was happening and found the teenager tossing on the floor and apparently gasping for breath. He thought that she had choked on her food and tried to help her but her condition began to deteriorate when she began to bleed through her nose and mouth. He had no option but to rush her to a hospital. There at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Ronita Erskine Hospital, the young girl was declared dead on arrival. The family which had an extremely gloomy holiday have planned her funeral service to be held at Sandy’s Funeral Parlour on Monday.

MOSES ‘WILDERNESS’ CALL - Is there a link between his call for a source to replenish dried-up AFC funds and reports of the USAID ‘Governance project’ providing covert funding to the Opposition parties?

THIRTY pieces of silver was the price for which Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. We are yet to know at what price are the AFC and APNU willing to sell out Guyana’s sovereignty to the imperial forces behind the USAID ‘Governance project’. Both the AFC and APNU have come out in full support of the project even though the US Ambassador to Guyana has been less than forthcoming to the media about crucial aspects of the project. This is the very opposition which talks all day and night about transparency and accountability. Hence, why are they so keen on supporting this project which is shrouded in mystery? What we do know is that our Opposition is ready and willing to hand Guyana on a platter to outside forces just to get their hands on power. We saw this recently manifest itself with the New River Triangle Geological and Geophysical Survey, where our Opposition was more concerned about neighbouring Suriname, than Guyana’s territorial integrity and our legitimate stance that the area in question is part of our 83,000 square miles of sovereign territory. Just to attack the Guyana Government, our Opposition was willing to sacrifice part of our territory. But this is nothing new as they have already told the Guyanese people that we are all ‘collateral damage’ in their quest for political power. It should come as no surprise that once again, they are willing to take instructions from foreign agents even if it means that our people will be the ultimate victims. We have seen this before when the US funded the PNC dictatorship which reduced this country

from the most progressive in the Caribbean under the Dr. Cheddi Jagan Government to the second poorest, only ahead of Haiti in 1992. Today, after two decades of hard and unrelenting work under successive PPP/C Governments, Guyana is the most progressive economy in the Caribbean once again. And what happens? The US through USAID has returned with a secretive project to undermine our progress. Clearly, the US prefers nations which are economically weak and constantly dependent on their loans. There is a telling question which no one has asked to date. Why has the US not sought to implement its ‘Governance project’ in other Caribbean nations which are not doing as well as Guyana, such as Jamaica, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and most recently we read that Trinidad’s economy is not doing so MOSES NAGAMOOTOO well either. Clearly these underperforming economies need help. Why not help them? Why is the US only obsessed with Guyana, when we have been projected to record the second highest growth rate in 2014?

IS THERE A LINK? This revelation gives greater impetus to the claims by the PPP/C Government that the Opposition is on a campaign to sabotage Guyana’s economy. Every major project to further transform Guyana they have opposed and tried to destroy. Even the money laundering legislation which makes it easier to track illegal financing they have opposed. Is the AFC/APNU alliance working for an outside force? If they are, then clearly they must receive payment at some point. With today’s technology and extra scrutiny of the nation’s finances and expenditure, it would make it more difficult to ‘covertly’ fund destabilization campaigns as occurred in the 60s. So what better way than through a project shrouded in mystery and from which the Guyana Government was totally excluded. Is there a link with their refusal to support the anti-money laundering legislation? We are left to ponder the Opposition’s staunch criticism targeting the Guyana Government for rejecting the project. Only recently, AFC Member of Parliament Moses Nagamootoo publicly lamented that funds for his party had dried up. At the same time, US officials seem determined to push ahead with the project but are withholding critical information regarding the full details, preventing the average Guyanese from determining whether or not they are indeed providing funds to the Opposition. It seems a strange coincidence. Old Kai is reminded of the quote by George Santayana, which was made famous in Guyana by another US-PNC product, Jim Jones, “Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Thieves steal pig, plantains from Cozier farmers By Rajendra Prabhulall THIEVES stole a pig and several bunches of plantains from farms at Cozier on the Essequibo Coast last Monday night. Pig rearer Darrel Benn of Westbury Village said the pen on his farm was attacked and one of his pigs slaughtered. He said the animal was killed at the location and the pork transported along the muddy dam to the public road at Somerset and Berks, then to a certain village where the meat was mixed with that stolen from other pig rearers. Benn said the known thieves sold the meat of the stolen animals to the public on Christmas Eve and he estimated

his loss at about $35,000. He lamented that he has to walk the muddy dam every day to feed and care for his pigs. Benn said the thieves raided two other farms, belonging to Carl Anthony Roberts and Goberdan Polastraj, Monday night, at Cozier and stole four bunches of plantains. The farmers, who traced the foot tracks of the thieves said they know who they are and from which village and will take the matter to God in prayers, as they are all Christians and believe that the Almighty will reveal the thieves in public. Jury frees Cool Square murder accused By George Barclay THE Cool Square murder trial ended yesterday with the accused, Junior Bourne, being found not guilty by a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes. A t t o r n e y - a t - L a w M r. Huckumchand represented the accused, while Miss Natasha Backer appeared for the prosecution. The judge and jury in the case were, on Monday, given an eyewitness account of the March 3, 2010 incident, wherein Gadray Baston, who claimed to be the girlfriend of the victim Rawle Harding, said she had identified the accused in the dock, Junior Bourne, as one of the gunmen who had shot and killed Harding during a hold-up at the West Ruimveldt, Georgetown restaurant. But in answer to cross-examination by defence counsel Huckumchand, the witness, who had given a statement to the police, claimed she did not tell the police that the shooter was about five feet, seven inches in height. She said the description about height was information supplied by the police, and she had nothing to do with it. The witness was a waitress at Cool Square Restaurant on the night of the killing. She said the shorter of the two robbers had been wearing a cap, but the man she had identified at an identification parade held at Diamond Police Station had been picked out by her from among men, none of whom was wearing a cap. FIRST TIME Asked by defence counsel how she was able to identify the accused by the hair when, at the time of the robbery, she was seeing him for the first time with a cap on, she did not answer. In her evidence-in-chief, she had told State Prosecutrix Natasha Backer that Harding

stitution since last Sunday. Up to the time of his passing, he worked at the privately-owned Radio Guyana International (RGI). Singh entered the broadcasting fraternity in the mid

1980s at the now defunct Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). There, he made a name for himself in the field of current affairs and on various programmes, including ‘Good Morning Guyana.’

Former GBC Programme Manager Margaret Lawrence recalled Singh’s qualities that took him through a successful broadcasting career. “He was very, very respect-

Murders among several holiday crimes being investigated By Michel Outridge POLICE have reported several murders over the recent holiday. Among them is that of Theiana Andrews, 19, of Moraikoai Village, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, who was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend on Boxing Day. Police said it happened at 02:15 hrs in the village and the suspect was arrested shortly after and is in custody. Another murder being investigated is that of Marlon Sam, 23, of Kwakwani Park, Berbice River, which occurred at about 23:00hrs Christmas Day, at Kwakwani. Investigations have revealed that Sam was at a night spot when he became involved in an argument with another man and was stabbed to his chest. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kwakwani Hospital and the suspected killer was arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations. Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Leon Webber, 20, whose body was found at about 06:30 hrs on December 26, (Boxing Day) at Piari Landing, Cuyuni River. The police are awaiting the results of the related post mortem. Meanwhile, a man was taken into custody after police found an unlicensed weapon in his possession. It was about 19:50hrs on Christmas Day when the man was arrested at 111 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro, with the shotgun.

HORSE racing pioneer and veteran lawyer, Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford died on Christmas Day after suffering a heart attack. The death of the 76-year-old plunged the legal fraternity and enthusiasts of that equestrian sport into deep mourning. Crawford succumbed at the Anamayah Hospital, Corentyne, Berbice, late Wednesday afternoon, hours after he was taken to the institution. Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, retired Justice Cecil Kennard expressed shock at the passing of his long-time colleague law student in England, with whom he went on to keep horse racing alive in Guyana along with several other persons. Describing his contributions to the legal profession and the horse racing community as “tremendous”, Mr. Kennard recalled that Mr. Crawford maintained his humility although he had reached great heights. The latter was admitted to practise law in England, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana in 1964. He was named Senior Counsel in 1991. Born at Salton Village (Little Alness) in Berbice, too, Crawford was honoured by several African Guyanese groups, as someone who had made remarkable contributions. The former national cycling champion was born into horse racing and went on to become the Legal Advisor to the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA). Initial investigations have revealed that Jaggroo was involved in an argument with his mother during which a man, who resides next door and operates an off licence liquor store, intervened and assaulted him with a piece of wood. THERE were smiles on the faces of many of the 26 young patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Christmas Day, when President Donald Ramotar, accompanied by his daughter Lisa Ramotar, along with GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan and other officials visited the hospital’s Paediatric ward. The President and his daughter delivered gifts and kind words to the young children who are being treated for ailments ranging from burns and broken limbs, to cancer. The Head of State said he was happy to be able to visit the children who were ill and also expressed appreciation for those care givers on duty at this time within the various children’s units. “I’m happy to be coming here to extend Christmas greetings to those who are not in a position to enjoy themselves. I thought I would come to meet them, to meet the caregivers - the nurses, the doctors who are here at this point in time, who would have been away from their families and contributing their services. I’m happy to be here to share with the children, the nurses and doctors that I’ve seen, and I want to express profound thanks to the caregivers - the nurses and doctors and all those who are working hard here…for the work that they are doing on behalf of our country, on behalf of our people. A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has expressed its sorrow at the tragic death of Guyana’s Chief Librarian, Ms. Gillian Thompson, in a road accident on Christmas Eve day. APNU said this event should serve as a reminder to the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Home Affairs of the road deaths of former Commissioner of Police Henry Greene last year and of Constable Shaquille Anderson and Assistant Commissioner Derrick Josiah, during ‘Road Safety Month’ in November this year. In a statement issued yesterday, APNU said it would like to remind the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration of the Ministry of Health’s National Rehabilitation Services Strategy 2009-2013 which revealed that road accidents were among the top 10 leading causes of death and account for the greatest number of disabilities.

Many display aggressive behaviour and poor road discipline by driving under the influence of alcohol. Measures must be taken to disqualify incompetent and incorrigible persons from driving taxis and buses. * Vehicle safety: Inspection of newly imported motor vehicles must be carried out to ensure that the minimum global safety accessories and features are adopted. There are now about 80,000 vehicles on Guyana’s roads and their safety performance must be rigorously reassessed. * Road safety management: Increased and sustained enforcement of road safety laws and standards is necessary to improve road user behaviour. Police enforcement operations such as ‘Operation Safeway’ and ‘Operation Road Order’ quickly degenerated into the arrests of hundreds of petty offenders without stopping the spiralling toll of fatalities. Responses to excessive speeding on the roadways should also include patrolling high-risk zones by day and night; enforcing lower speed limits wherever public roads run through populous rural communities; ensuring that minibuses and other commercial vehicles carry the lawful complement of cargo or passengers; banning distracting music and movies from minibuses and prohibiting the sale of intoxicating beverages in or near to public transportation terminals. * Human safety response: Introduction of improved emergency care and pre-hospital services for victims of accidents by establishing a national ambulance service and training a corps of first responder emergency care assistants.

By Joe Chapman POCKET ROCKET Gym’s Derrick Richmond obliterated the challenge of James ‘Sacks’ Walcott with a devastating right hand that accorded him the national Super Middleweight title of Guyana, when the Nation’s Promotion hosted its card at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Thursday night. On the same card, Shelly ‘The Agricola Boom’ Gibson outpunched hometown girl Shondell Park in their fourround historic heavyweight fight, where over 712 pounds of flesh moved around the ring, setting the venue alight. In front of a small crowd there were also wins for former WBC/CABOFE Middleweight champion Shawn Corbin over Anthony Augustine and Linden’s Cassius Matthews who got the better of Kelsey Simon in a welterweight scrap, along with four entertaining amateur fights featuring boxers from the Carryl Boxing Gym of

Linden. The highlight, however, was the vacant Super Middleweight contest in which Richmond, in knocking out Walcott, showed that his recent demolition job of Edmond DeClou by a thirdround stoppage was no fluke. This title fight turned out to be a testing one for both fighters and after the first round which saw the tenacious approach by Walcott provide some difficulty for Richmond, who was trying to measure his way in, it seemed that the rangy Walcott would get the better of his shorter opponent. But this was not to be. When Richmond went to his corner it was observed that the medical personnel examined his face and one could only guess he had suffered a cut, but he was able to resume the next round without any alarm. In round two the cagey Walcott put together some onetwo combinations during which he caught Richmond with a combination which caused referee Eion Jardine to give him the mandatory eight-count. Round three saw the forcefulness of Richmond pave the way for him to get in some combinations and as he came forward in his eagerness to take control he actually connected below the belt of Walcott, causing his opponent to openly show his concern about such a low blow. As they entered the centre of the ring for the fourth stanza, Walcott had regained some measure of control in dictating the fight, but as an aggressive Richmond, who was coached by Orland Rogers, came forward seeking to punch his way into contention, he slipped, causing his left thigh to go under the ropes outside the ring. Such a move apparently created some amount of restriction in a standing position for Richmond, creating signs of concern by his corner, while many thought it would be a matter of time before Walcott would take care of the business

In-form Hafeez earns Pakistan Test recall (REUTERS) - Muhammad Hafeez has been recalled to Pakistan’s Test squad following his prolific form in the one-day series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates.

Hafeez has scored three centuries in the first four oneday matches with the fifth and final match being played yesterday, piling up 407 runs in four innings at an average of 203 ahead of the three-Test series

that runs from December 31 in Abu Dhabi. The national T20 captain lost his place in the Test side because of poor form when Pakistan played against South Africa in the UAE in October.

Chandimal stars in win DINESH CHANDIMAL guided Sri Lanka to a dramatic two-wicket win over Pakistan in the fifth one-day international in Abu Dhabi yesterday. Sri Lanka looked to be on the ropes as a late clatter of wickets left them needing 18 off the final two overs in chase of 233 with just two wickets remaining, but sixes from Chandimal and Ajantha Mendis in the penultimate over put them on the front foot and Mendis sealed victory with a four with two balls to spare. Chandimal finished with 64 and earlier Lasith Malinga had taken four wickets to help Sri Lanka to victory in the final match of a series they have lost 3-2. Angelo Mathews’ men looked like they were going to cruise to victory in their reply as openers Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan engineered them safely through the opening 12 overs. The former was swinging the bat and sat three runs short of half-century off just 41 balls when he fell lbw while attempting to reverse sweep Mohammad Hafeez to fine leg. That took the score to 75 for one when Kumar Sangakkara came to the crease and he and Dilshan continued to score steadily before the opener fell for 45, hoisting a Junaid Khan delivery into the hands of Saeed Ajmal. Just four overs later, Sangakkara was on his way back to the pavilion as he was cleanbowled by Khan for 22 and all of a sudden Sri Lanka looked like they could be wobbling at 129 for three. Chandimal was at the other end and it looked like he may have to hold the reply together as Ashan Priyanjan departed for a single run, edging Umar Gul to wicketkeeper Umar Akmal. Mathews then helped to steady the ship but the run rate dried up as Sri Lanka began to fall behind in the game and when he edged Anwar Ali behind for just eight, they needed more than a run a ball. A dramatic finish looked on the cards but Chandimal was running out of partners and when Kithuruwan Vithanage was bowled by Ajmal for 14 it was advantage Pakistan. Sachithra Senanayake holed out to Hafeez off Khan for three with the final ball of the 45th over and just three balls later Malinga was gone, bowled by Ajmal for a golden duck to leave Sri Lanka 195 for eight.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) - Michael Hall has tendered his resignation as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The West Indies Players Association (WIPA), officials have confirmed. Hall, who has served the sport in several capacities for more than a decade, has resigned to pursue other opportunities. However WIPA president Wavell Hinds says Hall will remain as a director of WIPA. “We are sorry to see Michael leave his role as the CEO of the Association,” said Hinds. “He is a more than capable administrator, who provided a steady, level-headed approach to the handling of the players’ business during his tenure. England bowlers choke Australia after drawing blood By Ian Ransom (REUTERS) - A resurgent England attack tore through Australia’s batting lineup with six wickets in the final session to leave the hosts reeling on 164 for 9 at the close of an attritional second day of the fourth Ashes Test yesterday. Bowled out for what seemed a paltry 255 in the morning, the tourists hit back through their seamers in the afternoon with Stuart Broad and James Anderson’s parsimony and discipline capturing three wickets apiece before a crowd of more than 78 000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, fighting another desperate rearguard action, was 43 not out at stumps, with number 11 batsman Nathan Lyon yet to face a ball and Australia trailing by 91 runs. “England are on top. We have had our worst day of the series,” Australia opener Chris Rogers said after scoring 61, his third half-century of the series. “They bowled outstandingly and we’re up against it.” Australia may have recovered the Ashes and wrapped up the five-Test series 3-0, but the frailty of their batsmen has been repeatedly exposed throughout the series before being hastily concealed by the dourness of Haddin. Ash comes away with 13-0 win over PC on Christmas Day … Browne fires in five By Calvin Roberts ATLIN Browne found the back of the net five times while Lester Cummings did so on four occasions, as Ash Educational Institute successfully passed their examinations with President’s College (PC) in the Kashif and Shanghai/Chico Elite Next Generation Football tournament, by coming away with a 13-0 victory on Christmas Day at the Number 5 ground in West Berbice. Browne found the back of the net in the 23rd, 45th, 57th, 73rd and 88th minutes of play, while Cummings did so in the 12th, 39th, 45th and 54th minutes before being substituted after his final goal as Ash Education underlined their humiliation of PC, by controlling the run of play throughout the contest. Neil Munroe, who scored a double in the 2nd and 66th minutes, opened the scoring for Ash with his first goal when he wormed his way down the right flank past a bewildered Glenroy McTurk and beating their custodian Sanarier DaSilva. Ten minutes later Cummings scored the first of his helmet-trick, beating DaSilva from the top of his own box with a ripper to the far post, while Browne got the first of his five 11 minutes after Cummings’ strike from the penalty spot. With a deficit of 3-0 midway the first half, PC tried their best to find their key players Stedman Martins, Von Harding and Yvan Armstrong, but great defence work from Browne, who overlapped from the defence with ease, Jason Johashen and Kevin Layne for Ash Education, prevented the trio from making an impact for PC. Charles’ shot was parried for a corner by Waramadong custodian and captain Gerald Isaacs and from the resulting corner kick taken by Morris, the ball was sent to Charles who found James midst a crowd of defenders and he made a onetime pass back to Morris. At Buxton, Shane Luckie got a first-half hat-trick, with two of his three goals coming from the penalty spot and which were backed by second-half strikes from Ezra Ashby and Rolex John, handing Wismar/ Christianburg a 5-2 win. Luckie scored his goals in the 19th, 23rd and 29th minutes of play even as Ashby scored in the 65th and John added his name to the scorer’s list three minutes after Ashby’s goal for Wismar Christianburg, while Daniel Pellew (60th) and Ozese Halley (70th) were responsible for Ann’s Grove’s goals. In the second match at the same venue yesterday, Ash Education continued their impressive showing with a 3-0 win over Annandale Secondary, thanks to goals from Cummings (10th), Browne (60th) and Halley (70th), to set up a semifinal showdown with Wismar/Christianburg tomorrow. Waramadong will play the winner of the St George’s/ Mackenzie High showdown in the second semifinal tomorrow, with the winners clashing in the final at the Guyana National Stadium on New Year’s Day.
