NO PROBLEM BEING AUDITED -page 2

10% INCREASE IN SERIOUS CRIMES, 19% IN RAPE REPORTS -page 3

City Hall has no problem being audited Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Georgetown Mayor & City Council (M&CC), Debra Lewis, today told GNN that the Council will support a forensic audit into its operations. When ask of the Council's position relating to the matter, the PRO said “we have absolutely no problem. It provides for transparency and accountability of the tax payers monies and so Council doesn't have a problem, we welcome it” Recently, the Opposition

People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has been calling for the City Council to be audited. This call was made in light of all the ongoing state audits undertaken by the Ministry of Finance. Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma who is responsible for the audits told GNN that he has no say in the selection of agencies that are to be audited. He explained that such decision is made at the level of Cabinet, adding that he is not a

Cabinet Minister. He further explained that City Hall does not fall within the ambit of statutory bodies while the audits are for that category. He noted that for any audit to be done at the municipal entities, it would require a proposal and approval from the Council, which would be free from any influence of central government. H o w e v e r, t h e explanation did not sit well with the PPP who noted that “Guyanese are

not prone to accept such stupidity.” The opposition party described the position regarding City Hall being spared an audit as one which runs counter to the present state of affairs, in which the country is awash with commissions of inquiry, audits, investigations, and initiatives of this nature. According to the PPP, the Ministry of Public Service and the Ministry of Amerindian A ff a i r s f o r m p a r t o f central government, and

Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis

both have had peripherals audited. This alleged “double standards” and “partisan and self-serving fresh approach adopted by the ex-military/civilian ruling clique” was denounced by the

opposition party, whose officials called on Sharma to “come clean and cease the claptrap about transparency.”

Dr Van West Charles CEO of GWI meeting with residents of Bath Settlement at a community meeting

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Wa t e r I n c o r p o r a t e d (GWI) Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, recently met with residents of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice to discuss complaints about the reduction in the level of service provided to the community, among other issues. GWI, in a statement said residents indicated that due to the

prolonged dry season, a significant amount of water provided by GWI is currently being utilized for Agricultural purposes including small 'kitchen gardens' and 'cash crops.' It was noted that in the absence of consistent rainfall, GWI's service is utilized for both Agricultural and domestic purposes. Dr. Van WestCharles explained that this practice has

decreased the amount of water available in the distribution system for domestic purposes. A proposal was put forward for customers and GWI's West Coast Berbice team to agree on specific times in which GWI's service will be utilized exclusively for Agricultural purposes as well as particular hours in which the service will be used for domestic

purposes. It is pivotal that customers utilizing the service for both purposes receive an adequate supply at specific times of the day. I have tasked the GWI team with coordinating with residents the schedule which will be utilized to provide adequate water for these specific tasks which are both vital to the community', Dr. Van

customers of Bath Settlement. He indicated that he has committed the GWI Operations team to explore increasing the capacity of the well station which provides service to the community and increasing the pumping hours.

$6M BRIBE:

JUNIOR RANKS FATE RESTS WITH TOP COP

The three junior ranks who were charged criminally and appeared before the Court on two occasions for the offence of bribery, are unsure of their continued employment with the Guyana Police Force. That decision lies with the Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud. According to the standard operating procedures of the Guyana Police Force, lower level ranks receive their sanctions based on the advice or directive from the Commissioner of Police while senior officers are dealt with by the Police Service Commission. As it is now, the two constables and corporal's fate with the law enforcement body is

presently a work in progress as the paper works are ongoing to determine if they will remain members of the organization or be fired pending the outcome of the court matter. Likewise, the same is being done by this time at the level of the Police Service Commission in the case of the Assistant Superintendent of Police. M e a n w h i l e , approximately four days after the junior ranks were remanded to prison for the offence, they successfully sought and was granted bail from the High Court through their lawyers. The men were placed under close arrest after they corruptly

received a six million dollars bribe from three occupants of a minibus to allow a shipment of cocaine to pass rather than confiscating same and placing the men into custody. The ranks, Constables Ray Drepaul, Trevon Mckenzie, Corporal Shawn Mcphoy a n d A s s i s t a n t Superintendent Terrence Brown all pleaded not guilty to the offence when the matter was called in the Georgetown Magistrates' Court two weeks ago. There have since been reports which this news site has been unable to confirm, that the two constables and one corporal were placed on three hundred thousand dollars bail.

GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION HAVE DIFFERENT FOCUS WHEN PARLIAMENT RESUMES President David Granger

While the Government side of the National Assembly will be focusing on President David Granger's address when Parliament comes out of recess on October 22, the Opposition Peoples Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C's) main focus will be on the answers to questions that they have tabled before the recess.

“We have tabled a number of important questions and we are looking to see what the answers will be,” PPP/C Chief Whip Gail Teixeira told GNN. Opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo had told the media at a press conference last month that he has a number of questions all relating to financial

Minister Amna Ally

matters when Parliament resumes. Both the Government and Opposition sides of the House did not divulge much in terms of Bills to be taken to Parliament. Meanwhile, Government's Chief Whip Amna Ally said they are still sorting out what will be on the order paper for October 22. The National Assembly

will come out of its annual recess on October 22, with an address to the Parliament by President Granger. He is expected to focus his address on t h e o n g o i n g G u y a n a / Ve n e z u e l a border controversy. Legal Affairs Minister Basil Williams had indicated that the Government will be laying a motion to

Gail Teixeira

increase Parliamentary salaries in the National Assembly. However, Parliamentarians are expected to be greeted by a protest on October 22, which is being organized by Civil Society group Red Thread. The group will be protesting against the recently gazetted salary increase for Government

officials and Members of Parliament. Over the past week the issue has s p a r k e d m u c h controversy and many organisations and unions have spoken out against the increases. The protest has been dubbed as a “Stand Against Fat Cat Politrickians.” The Opposition PPP has indicated its intentions to oppose the increases.

REGION 9 CHILDREN GET SHOES

Minister Amna Ally assists the children in finding their correct size

In keeping with a promise made by President David Granger, while in Opposition, students from

the village of Parishara, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), received footwear. The

shoes which were donated by businessman, Bishnarine Persaud, the proprietor of Sanjay's

Jewellery, were handed over to the children by Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally. She also handed over sports gear to the Kurupukari community to promote social cohesion The provision of the school shoes, is part of President Granger's push to ensure that all school aged children are not hindered from attending school, by the lack of basic needs. At the Saraswatie Vidya Niketan School's Graduation ceremony held recently, the President reiterated the importance of educating the nation, even as he pointed out the challenges being faced, by the students in the hinterland regions in

accessing an education. “Anyone who knows about what I've been saying on the campaign trail for the past five years would know I've been calling for Guyana to become an education nation once again. Education is one of the greatest gifts that you could ever receive in your life. I have covered every single Region of this country, and I'm pained to go into some parts of our country to see children coming out of school three o'clock on a Friday afternoon and not one of them are wearing a pair of shoes. Some people may be rich, but a lot of people cannot even afford shoes to go to school. Guyanese children, right here in

2015,” the President said. Businessman Persaud, ensured that the shoes were transported to Region 9, sealing the public-private partnership. Minister Ally vowed that the village will not be neglected under this administration as she reiterated the g o v e r n m e n t ' s developmental plans for the people of that region. In delivering the sports gear, Minister Ally noted that the purpose of the activity was to begin to involve citizens at the community level in the promotion of togetherness and national unity. This, she explained, was one of the primary mandates of her Ministerial post. (Adapted from GINA)

FORENSIC AUDIT REVEALS CORRUPTION AT NFMU -SHARMA

-NFMU Head dismisses claims

Junior Finance Minister Jaipaul Sharma

Junior Finance Minister Jaipaul Sharma is maintaining that there is corruption at the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU), despite its Head Valmiki Singh's denial. Sharma, who is in charge of the forensic audits told GNN that based on the draft report he has received from the audit that was conducted

“the manner in which the agency was run leaves a lot to be desired…a lot of things went wrong.” He said the manner in which things were done under the previous administration left room for corruption. However, Singh is contending that one should wait until the final report on the audit is released to make a determination on whether

Valmiki Singh

or not there was corruption at the entity. The Minister pointed out that millions of dollars was spent by the NFMU on projects that did not fall under its ambit. He pointed specifically to the One Laptop per Family (OLPF) project and the Fibre Optic cable from Brazil to Guyana. The report on the forensic audit which was

conducted by Chartered Accountant Chris Ram, showed that in some cases, most of the Unit's funds went to the Peoples Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/c's) Fibre Optic Cable from Brazil and the O L P F. S h a r m a condemned such action saying it is very strange and downright deceitful. Singh clarified in a press release that his

agency acted based on instructions handed down by the previous government to fund mostly operational costs for the OLPF and the EGovernance projects. He said his Unit ensured that every single request for payment submitted for the ICT projects, pre-May 11, 2015, was approved by the then Head of the Presidential Secretariat D r. R o g e r L u n c h e o n before such payment was made. Minister Sharma noted that the fact that Luncheon approved payments before they were made does not make it right when it is unlawful. This, he says is no excuse to cover up for the wrong course of action taken by the NFMU head. Sharma is contending that funds were made available to cover for those projects by Central Government through a grant. He

questioned how the NFMU can provide funds for projects that have already been funded by other means. This he says is corruption at its highest. Singh clarified that all expenditure made by the NFMU for the ICT projects were included in the NFMU budget estimates which were considered and approved by the Committee of Supply of the National Assembly for the years 2012 to 2015. The NFMU stated from the onset of the audit it is confident that any fair audit and subsequent report of its operations will reveal the truth, that is, NFMU is properly managed. “Its operations are fair and above board and that there were no acts of corruption/fraud at the a g e n c y, ” t h e a g e n c y noted.

PARDONED PRISONERS TRAINED AND MONITORED -DIRECTOR OF PRISONS All, except four of the forty prisoners who were pardoned earlier this year by President David Granger are being trained and monitor under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Skills and Knowledge for Youth Empowerment (SKYE) programme. This is according to Director of Prisons, Welton Trotz, who noted that, the monthly reports on training and development being provided thus far has

proven that the candidates are performing well. During a telephone interview with GNN, he disclosed that the program has been successful in integrating them into society. "Three of them who would've hail from the interior, they are not on the program even though we have interviewed them and given them the necessary encouragement, they apparently went back into their location and did not make contact with the

program… A fourth one that hails from Corentyne, he would've gotten himself involved in something and back in prison" Trotz said. President Granger recently disclosed that he will be granting amnesty to another batch of prisoners at the upcoming 50 t h I n d e p e n d e n c e anniversary. However, the Director of Prisons noted that he was not in receipt of any letters or instructions in this regard.

He explained that prisoners that were pardoned are those that committed minor offences such as threatening language, threatening b e h a v i o r, d i s o r d e r l y behavior and minor assault. Prior to being g r a n t e d a m n e s t y, t h e prisoners were interviewed by the representatives of the USAID SKYE program to be enrolled in the program after being released. They are not separated from

Welton Trotz

other youths undergoing training under the program Trotz added. The prisoners receive training in suitable skills to join the

workforce. After they would have proven that they are ready for the world of work, they are released.

GREENIDGE FOR HIGH-LEVEL MEETING IN ITALY Minister of Foreign Affairs and Second Vice President, Carl Greenidge, will represent Guyana in Milan, Italy, at a Ministerial Meeting, on Food Security and Climate Adaptation in Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), scheduled for October 14 to 16. The meeting will offer Ministers and Ambassadors the opportunity to explore the implications of the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, as it relates to

Food Security and Nutrition and Climate Change Adaptation, with the overall objective being that of enhancing food security, and health and well-being in SIDS. The meeting will focus on five major areas: Sustainable Agriculture and Fisheries; Nutrition; Livelihoods, especially for women; Access to Food, inclusive of global and domestic trade (with regard to price volatility of food imports and commodities, as well as

reliability of transport networks); and Resilience of Agriculture and Fisheries to climate change, ocean acidification and disaster sessions. The Milan Expo, with its theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” will provide an excellent backdrop for raising the profile of SIDS issues and related food security challenges. Ministers and Ambassadors would have

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Second Vice President, Carl Greenidge

space to share experiences and present initial plans for national and regional level implementation, and to articulate areas where further support and

capacity development are needed. Perspectives from leading experts in the field of food security, and from representatives of Romebased UN entities, other

relevant regional and global bodies, the private sector and partner governments would be included as well. (Adapted from GINA)

TREE PLANTING EXERCISE FURTHERING DRIVE TO INCREASE PRODUCTION

Dr. Oudho Homenauth

Chief Executive Officer and Extension Institute (CEO) of the National (NAREI) Dr. Oudho Agricultural Research Homenauth, says that the

tree planting exercise, initiated last month, will help to further enhance

the drive to increase the production of fruits and vegetables locally. Increasing production of fruits and vegetables by at least 25 percent, by 2020, is part of an overall goal of the Ministry of Agriculture, in addressing food security and poverty c o n c e r n s simultaneously. Over the last few years, the figures, as they relate to the production of these commodities, have been on the rise, and the tree planting initiative will

ensure that this will continue to do so, Dr. Homenauth said. To this end, NAREI has been able to produce at this point, in excess of 150,000 fruit plants alone, for distribution throughout the country. According to Dr. Homenauth, increasing the production of fruits and vegetables, along with other initiatives such as diversification into spices will guarantee people, in and outside of Guyana, fresh farm produce. He also pointed

out that another spin-off is that the country will expand its options for processed vegetable and fruit products. Guyana wants to see an increase in agro-processing products by at least 20 percent, by 2020. Dr. Homenauth noted that to do so, there must be raw materials, especially fruits. This is why, NAREI has been encouraging farmers to get into the production of more fruits that can be agro-processed, he said. (GINA)

NAVRATRI STARTS TODAY Hindus have begun to observe Navratri which literally means "nine nights” as in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. This festival is observed twice a year and is dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity, Durga. During these nine nights and ten days, the three forms of t h e g o d d e s s - D u rg a , Lakshmi and Saraswathi -

are invoked. Pandit Hardesh Tiwari gave a synopsis of the festival which is being observed from today (Oct, 13) to Thursday (Oct, 22). This year's celebration is ten days since it concludes o n t h e d a y “ Vi j a y a Dasmi” which celebrates the Hindu god Rama's victory over the demon

king Ravana and the triumph of good over evil. “The nine days is divided into three parts, the first three days is dedicated to the worship of mother durga, the second three days, mother Lakshmi, and third; mother saraswati. These goddesses are all the expressions of one divine being” Tiwari explained. He noted that the three expressions are

indicative of the evolutionary reality surrounding the material world. “Durga comes bedecked with many weapons and we (Hindus) worship that so that we can weed out, eradicate or cleanse. We a p o n r y i s u s e d militantly to face whatever problems we may have (lust, greed, jealousy, anger). After we would have eradicated the bad part of ourselves, you have to dress

yourself up and this is mother Lakshmi who is the goddess of wealth. Now that I have beautified and cleanse myself, I am eligible to real knowledge…so we pray to mother

Saraswathi the last three days to give us that knowledge” the Pandit said. During this period of time, fasting is done to the extent of each person's ability he said.

Gov't preparing Mabaruma for Township Several changes are to be made to transform Mabaruma, Region One into a town after the Community was selected for township status earlier this year. The Ministry of Communities has initiated discussions with Region One's Regional Democratic Council (RDC) to define the boundaries of Mabaruma.

During a visit to Mabaruma recently by Junior Minister of Communities, Dawn Hastings-Williams and a team of representatives from the Ministry and the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission, residents of Wauna, Tobago, Kumaka and Hosororo asked for their villages to be included in the boundaries of Mabaruma. They

offered many ideas for the development of their communities. These communities are located in the Mabaruma subregion. The Minister visited the Mabaruma Regional Hospital as the residents noted that inadequate healthcare is one of their concerns. The Regional Member of Parliament and Regional

Chairman pledged their commitment to work with the administration of the hospital, Regional Executive Officer, and Minister of Public Health to address needs of the hospital and residents. During a public meeting the residents also raised concerns relating to the delivery of education and living conditions. Minister Dawn Hastings-Williams

Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder with officials of the GMC after the official opening of the the Export Facilitation Workshop

It is anticipated that collaboration among the Guyana Marketing Corporation, the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) will be strengthened to expedite the documentation process to export Guyana's agriculture produce. T h i s w a s disclosed at a workshop hosted by the Guyana Marketing Corporation's ( G M C ) E x p o r t

The event was hosted as part of Agriculture month activities which is being observed under the theme; “Exploiting our Strengths; advancing agriculture and social protection”. Addressing the gathering of exporters, prospective exporters and other stakeholders, Agriculture Minister Noel Holder said

the GMC will continue to offer support to any individual or group that wishes to export a g r i c u l t u r a l commodities, both regionally and internationally. “ T h e Government of Guyana has recognised the need for increased production, transformation and economic diversification of the agricultural sector. We are cognisant of the fact that we have to increase our exports of

agricultural commodities to ensure sustained growth of the economy,” Minister Holder said. The Agriculture Minister called for producers to move from subsistence level to high return commercial investments. “ W e w i l l continue to avail our service for use at a subsidised price to ensure that commodities are transported and stored at the required temperature through the use of our

refrigerated trucks, refrigerated containers, thereby maintaining the cold chain after postharvest,” Minister Holder added. Meanwhile, GMC's acting General Manager Ida Sealey Adams highlighted the critical role of marketing in the agriculture sector. Adams outlined that the corporation has been assiduously working to achieve its mandate of promoting the cultivation

and export of Guyana's non-traditional agricultural crops, and is constantly evaluating market behaviour and trends, and guiding stakeholders accordingly. The GMC also provides assistance and support to boost exports through trade facilitation to exporters and potential exporters and commits to increase non-sugar, nonrice exports by 25% by 2020.

INFORMATION FLOW FROM DPP CHAMBERS SLOWS

Dr. Jenifer Westford

There is an apparent lack of information flow from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution to members of the media and by extension the general public. Reportedly, it is expected to remain that way for some time. This comes as the Public Relations Officer attached to the Chambers is said to be on vocation and it appears that there is no one else designated to share information with the press in her absence. The practice is nothing new as this has happened in the past. Despite this, it seems that the Chambers has failed to implement systems to ensure that the dissemination of

information from such an important office is not dependent on one person. The Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution is a constitutional one which makes the DPP only answerable to the President of the country or any other person or persons so designated by him. The DPP chambers works very closely with the Guyana Police Force where it recommends what charges are to be laid against individuals following the submission of files from the Crime Chief. At the moment there are several important files which are presently engaging the attention of the DPP's Chambers for

which advice is being sought by the police before they can press charges. One such file is that of former Minister of Public Service Dr. Jenifer Westford who is being investigated along with a former senior officer of her Ministry for the alleged conversion of more than six hundred million dollars for purposes other than what the funds were originally intended. Sources told the Guyana News Network that there is no deputy to the Public Relations Officer of the Chambers nor is anyone, including the secretary to the DPP, authorized to speak with journalists.

ENTERTAINMENT

THE EXPENDABLES 4 COMING 2017

They're not getting any a c t i o n s t a r s o f T h e younger, but the veteran Expendables look set to

return for another movie. Variety have confirmed

that The Expendables 4 is set to film next year, for a 2017 release. Even though 2014's The Expendables 3 made less than either of its predecessors, a sizeable proportion of the total gross was taken in China. This has led to considerable Chinese investment in a fourth movie, with SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution putting more than $25 million into the production. T h e disappointing box office performance of The Expendables 3, which

starred Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Mel Gibson, has been put down to a combination of the film leaking early onto the Internet, and the decision to make it a PG-13 rather than the R rating of the previous films. In an interview with CraveOnline last year, Stallone admitted that it was a mistake to aim for a lower rating. "I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone's part in trying to reach a wider audience," he said. "And in doing such, diminish

the violence that the audience expects. I'm quite certain it won't happen again." "In an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in Expendables 4.” (Yahoo News)

“GAME OF THRONES” CLARKE IS ESQUIRE SEXIEST WOMAN ALIVE Having led armies, conquered cities and ridden dragons, Esquire magazine bestowed its annual honor on the 28 year-old British actress, who plays aspiring queen Daenerys Targaryen on the hit HBO show. Clarke appears half-clothed on the cover of Esquire's November issue and in various states of undress inside the magazine, which compliments her ability to play both "friendly and fierce" onscreen. Clarke tells Esquire she had to look up the "Game of Thrones" series online before auditioning for the role. "I had two scenes which told me nothing and not very much time in which to read all those (George

TRACY MORGAN RETURNS TO STANDUP COMEDY Tracy Morgan has returned to the stage almost a year and a half after being critically injured in a car crash. On Monday, the comic, 46, tweeted a photo of himself performing for the first time since a six-car pileup

left him badly hurt in June 2014. Morgan's longtime friend comedian James McNair was killed and other passengers were injured when a Walmart truck slammed into the group's limo on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Morgan appeared at the Comedy Cellar in New York. "My first time on stage in 16 months at the #ComedyCellar!" Morgan tweeted. "Picking up the pieces!" In September, Morgan made an

Over the show's five seasons, Clarke's character survives an arranged marriage to a primitive warrior, betrayal by one of her trus ted lieutenants and repeated challenges to her growing p o w e r. H e r n u a n c e d portrayal of the goldentressed Daenerys, revealing both strength and vulnerability, has won her two Emmy nominations. The role also required her to do several difficult sex and nude scenes, including one in

which she appears to be violated by her new husband on their wedding night. "Once, I had to take a little time out," she says. "I said I needed a cup of tea, had a bit of a cry, and was ready for the next scene." Clarke follows Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson as past recipients of the "Sexiest Woman Alive" title. AMAZING WORLD

LOST HUNTER SURVIVES 6 DAYS BY EATING ANTS

A hunter who got lost in a vast Australian desert managed to survive for six days without water by eating ants, police said.

Reginald Foggerdy, 62, had embarked on a hunting trip last week with his brother in the Great Victoria Desert in Western

Australia. He went missing Wednesday after setting off to hunt animals in the dry, sandy wilderness,

wearing only a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, according to police. After a "massive" land and air search, police officers aided by Aboriginal trackers found Foggerdy "extremely dehydrated, a bit delusional" on Tuesday, said Police Superintendent Andy Greatwood. "His last couple of days of survival were achieved by lying down under a tree and eating black ants," Greatwood told local radio. "That's the level of survival that Mr. Foggerdy has gone to." Greatwood said the hunter was found

about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from where he went missing, an area roughly 170 kilometers east of Laverton, the nearest town. "He's received treatment -- first aid -- on the ground and it's fair to say he's now sitting up and talking -- so looking very positive," he said. Ants and other insects are highlighted as possible sources of nutrients by survival experts, but it's still extraordinary that Foggerdy managed to stay alive for so long in a r e g i o n w h e r e temperatures frequently soar above 90 degrees

Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). Foggerdy's wife, Arlyn, said she cried upon hearing the news that he'd been found alive. "How you can survive without water and food is a miracle," she said, according to the Australia B r o a d c a s t i n g Corporation. The Great Australia Desert is the largest desert in Australia. It has "red sand dunes, stony plains and dry salt lakes" but no permanent surface water, according to Australian authorities.

WHY I SELL MY BREAST MILK TO STRANGERS The online breast milk business is becoming more and more lucrative, despite health warnings. But why are mothers choosing to sell their milk to strangers? Jade Biddle is one of a growing number of mothers choosing to sell their breast milk on the internet. The 22-year-old from L e o m i n s t e r , Herefordshire, got the idea after watching an interview about the issue on television. "I thought about donating it to a hospital but there was a screening process and I didn't want to go through that. So I thought 'if I've got it spare, why not?'" Miss Biddle researched the going rate on the internet - £2 per ounce - and posted an advert on Only The

Breast. The website is branded as "a community for moms to buy, sell and donate natural breast milk." It brings buyers and sellers together but does not sell any milk itself. Miss Biddle, who gave birth to her son Noah seven months ago, said most of the email inquiries came from men. She said there had been a mixed reaction from friends and family to her sideline money-maker. "When I brought it up with my friends they initially thought it was weird," she said. Other women who have advertised their breast milk for sale online include Dawn Croxson, from Dorset. Meanwhile, another mother of one said she posted her

advertisement after hearing stories about parents who had tried to buy breast milk over the internet and later discovered what they were buying was not real. But, despite only posting the advertisement a month ago, Natasha said she was already having second thoughts because the majority of her inquiries had come from men wanting the milk for health reasons. "The idea was to help mothers and families, not to help guys lose weight or achieve other health benefits," she said. Healthcare professionals have said there has been an increase in buying breast milk online by fetishists, bodybuilders and cancer patients but warn it could

be harmful to people's health. Tests on 12 breast milk samples bought online for a BBC Inside Out investigation found four contained E.coli, two of them contained candida, which causes thrush, and one contained

pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria linked to the death of four babies in neonatal units in Belfast in 2012. A F o o d Standards Agency (FSA) spokeswoman said selling breast milk online was not

illegal. But she said civil action could be taken by local authorities if it was proven it had not gone through the necessary safety checks and this could result in fines. (Adapted from the BBC)

REAL LIFE RAPUNZEL HASN'T CUT HER HAIR FOR 35 YEARS Going to the hairdressers can sometimes be a chore but one woman doesn't bother to get her hair cut at all - in fact, she hasn't bothered in 35 YEARS. Gu Meiying, 59, has been growing her hair since she was 24-years-old and it has now grown to a staggering 2.52 metres in length. But Meiying, of

the Miao ethnic tribe in Yunna Province, China, isn't being lazy - she believes her hair to be a good luck charm. She even turned down a £2,000 offer to give up her flowing locks - which are around TWICE her height. Meiying said: “My hair is a treasure and my totem, my lucky

charm. “I also think that long hair is good for health. "I will keep growing it and will aim for a G u i n n e s s Wo r l d Record.” Incredibly, her hair is so long that it can take a whole WEEK to dry and it can be wrapped around her body threeand-a-half times. Meiying now

wants to double the length of her hair - to over 5.627 metres - so that she can be included in the Guiness Book of World Records. The current record holder is Xie Qiuping, another Chinese woman, who began growing her hair in 1973 from the age of 13years-old. (Yahoo)

Bad example set by MPs

A number of activists who condemned the actions of Government MPs for statements made in and outside of Parliament are

s a y i n g t h a t Parliamentarians should set an example for the country and not engage in bullying, even towards

other Members of Parliament. This weekend, social media was crowded with screen caps and videos of statements attributed to Colm Imbert and Darryl Smith referring to statements that were perceived to be homophobic. Ye s t e r d a y i n Parliament, Opposition Chief Whip Roodal Moonilal, told Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi to “shut his stink mouth.” He later withdrew the statement and apologised saying it was made in the heat of the moment and had been taunted by

Government Minister Fitzgerald Hinds. Smith addressed Princes Town MP Barry Padarath by using what sounded like a play on the word “princess.” Later that day on Facebook, a comment coming from a profile attributed to Imbert stated, “Please don't use the words “bull”, Padarrraaaath, and me in the same sentence. I fraid.” Imbert later came out and said his profile was hacked. However, that statement has been screen shot, saved and circulated around Facebook a number of times. Jeremy Edwards,

head of the Silver Lining Project which is a youthbased organisation that advocates against bullying particularly in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community told T&T Guardian that politicians must be the ones to set the standard for younger people to follow. “It is very disappointing and shameful to know that it is coming from a group who promised from day one that they would be a government for everyone,” Edwards said. He noted that Smith, as the Yo u t h M i n i s t e r, w a s setting a bad example for

younger people in school by engaging in homophobic bullying. “So many young people are listening to the Parliament. If they are not seeing it live on TV, they are watching it on social media when the clips go viral. They are not setting the example particularly since we have seen a lot of issues of bullying going on in schools,” Edwards said. He noted that many school boys were labelled as princesses and other derogatory names in school. (Adapted from the Trinidad Guardian)

Gas and We will apply hanging law diesel prices down – TT AG

Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi

Residents of Barbados will pay less for some petroleum products today, but the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) increased after price adjustments came into effect at midnight. The retail price of gasoline fell from $3.19 per litre to $2.97; diesel moved from $2.20 per litre to $2.11 per litre; and kerosene will now retail at $1.00 per litre,

down from $1.18 per litre. H o w e v e r , residents will pay more for LPG. According to a statement from the Division of Energy, the price of the 100 pound (lb) cylinder will move from $151.29 to $151.71, an increase of 42 cents and the 25-lb cylinder will now retail at $43.03, up from $42.92. The new price of

the 22-lb cylinder is $38.03, an increase of nine cents. There will be an increase of eight cents on the price of the 20-lb cylinder, which will now retail for $34.57. T h e s e adjustments in retail prices are due solely to changes in the CIF (cost, insurance, freight) of these refined products. (Nation News)

Tr i n i d a d & To b a g o ' s Attorney General Faris AlRawi yesterday signaled Government's intention to introduce measures to apply the death penalty in relation to convicted murderers. During the Budget debate, as he gave an overview of plans for his Ministry, Al-Rawi disclosed that he has already established a “tracking committee” to monitor murder cases and suggested that measures could be introduced to bring about “institutional strengthening” in order to open the door to the hangman once more.

The PNM and the opposition People's Partnership have taken similar stances in relation to the death penalty in the past, with both in support of hanging. However an attempt by the People's Partnership to pass legislation to categorise murder cases into different classes and to impose the death penalty in only the most grave of cases was shut down by the then Opposition PNM i n 2 0 1 1 . The PNM said the bill was too unwieldy to implement and would open the door to legal challenges. Hanging

remains the law but is not implemented because of common-law stipulations which limit the timeframe within which capital punishment can occur. Protracted delays in the legal system, involving a multi-tiered system of criminal justice as well as timeconsuming appeals to local and international bodies, have often meant the timeframe for a person to hang lapses. No executions have taken place since 1999. (Adapted from the Trinidad Newsday)

Warhead downed flight MH17 - Report Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 "crashed as a result of the detonation of a warhead outside the airplane," Dutch Safety Board chairman Tjibbe Joustra told reporters Tuesday. Joustra said the warhead fit a Buk rocket system, referring to Russian technology. But Russian officials who participated in the investigation said it was not possible to confirm the warhead or type of system, according to Joustra. The Boeing 777 was heading from Amsterdam to Malaysia when it was shot down on July 17, 2014, over Ukrainian territory controlled by pro-Russian

separatists. All 298 people on board were killed. A report released Tuesday found that the warhead -- which was launched from eastern Ukraine -- detonated to the lefthand side of the airliner's cockpit, according to Joustra. Experts investigating the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in Ukraine are set to release their findings. Joustra said that "none of the aviation parties involved" -- including Ukrainian authorities, which failed to close off the airspace -- "recognized the risks posed to civil aviation by the armed conflict on the ground." He said the parties viewed the conflict from a military

perspective and nobody considered the risk to civil aviation. In its preliminary report on the disaster, it said Flight 17 broke apart in the air after a burst of "high-energy objects" hit it from outside, supporting the theory that a warhead exploded close to the jet. A draft report by the board said that evidence indicated that pro-Russian rebels shot down MH17 with a Russian-made Buk missile, a source who saw the document told CNN in July. The disaster and its aftermath -- when armed men initially prevented international monitors from reaching the crash site and recovering the

scattered bodies -shocked the world. The greatest loss was suffered by the Netherlands, which had 196 of its citizens on board the flight. Dozens of

Malaysians and Australians were also on the plane, as were smaller numbers of UK, Indonesian, Belgian, German, Philippine and Canadian nationals.

Relatives of the crash victims were being informed of the findings ahead of the report's release, the Dutch Safety Board said in a statement. (Adapted from CNN)

Philippines dismisses reports MH370 Playboy wreckage found 'to drop' naked Philippine authorities i n s i s t e d o n Tu e s d a y a Malaysian Airlines jet that went missing last year had not crashed onto a remote Filipino island, after a man's claims that wreckage had been found there made headlines. While a wing part from the jet was found washed up on a beach in the Indian Ocean in July, the rest of the plane has yet to be found. Malaysian media reported at the weekend that a Filipino man told Malaysian police that his relatives had found wreckage of a plane, with skeletons inside, in the jungles of the Philippines' remote Tawi-Tawi island chain. Despite the report appearing to have little credibility, some media in Britain, the United States, Singapore and elsewhere picked it up, saying wreckage of a plane had

been found on the island and it could be from MH370. The precise fate of Flight MH370, which went missing in March last year with 239 people on board, remains a mystery, and the latest reports appeared to be yet another false lead based on no evidence. Philippine authorities said on Tuesday that no plane wreckage had been found, and questioned he credibility of the apparent police witness. "I sent people to the site where it (the plane wreck) was supposedly seen and the results were negative," the deputy police director of TawiTa w i , S u p e r i n t e n d e n t Glenn Roy Gabor, told AFP by phone. "There was someone who was spreading that story but it has no truth to it and the person spreading it has disappeared."

Gabor said that if a big plane had crashed on Sagbay island, as the man reportedly claimed to Malaysian police, local residents would definitely h a v e n o t i c e d . " We interviewed the local people and they didn't see anything. That is a small area. It is impossible they wouldn't see something like that," he said. Tawi-Tawi governor Nurbert Sahali also released a statement saying no wreckage had been found. The Boeing 777 mysteriously disappeared as it was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Authorities believed it crashed into the Indian Ocean, but a massive investigation has failed to find the main body of the plane or determine why it went missing. The only major breakthrough came in late July when a two-metre (almost seven-foot) wing part washed up on a beach on Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean. In the absence of proof, there have been many false leads and conspiracy theories that have been given widespread publicity. (Yahoo News)

women images Playboy magazine is to stop publishing images of naked women as part of its redesign, it has emerged. Its US owners say the internet has made nudity outdated, and pornographic magazines are no longer so commercially viable, the New York Times reports. Playboy's circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in the 1970s to the current 800,000, official figures s h o w. H o w e v e r, t h e magazine will still feature women in provocative poses though not fully nude. The decision was apparently taken last month at a meeting attended by Playboy founder and current editor-in-chief Hugh H e f n e r. M a g a z i n e executives admitted that Playboy - which was founded in 1953 - had been overtaken by the

changes it pioneered, according to the New York Times. "That battle has been fought and won," Playboy chief executive Scott Flanders is quoted as saying by the newspaper. "You're now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it's just passe at this juncture." Gone, too, are the days when interviews with figures of the stature of Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and Jimmy Carter made Playboy so culturally and politically significant, says the

BBC's Nick Bryant in New York. Playboy's website has already banished nudity, partly to give it access to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. And its popularity has soared, with web traffic quadrupling. A brand long synonymous with salaciousness is cleaning up its act, and all with the blessing - apparently - of t h e 8 9 - y e a r- o l d M r H e f n e r , o u r correspondent adds. (BBC)

Younis breaks Miandad record Younis Khan has broken the 22-year-old record of Javed Miandad to become Pakistan's leading Test r u n - s c o r e r. H e b r o k e Miandad's tally of 8832 runs in emphatic style on the opening day of the first Test against England when he launched Moeen Ali over deep midwicket for six during the final session in Abu Dhabi. Younis, 37, made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi in 2000, and scored 107 in the second innings to take Pakistan to within two wickets of a remarkable

Younis Khan

come-from-behind victory. The last 12 months have been especially prolific for Younis. In that time, he has averaged over 80 with six hundreds. Ahead of this Test, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq paid tribute to a fulcrum of the middle order. "It's always an honour to share dressing room with players like Younis Khan," he said. "He has always been the key man in the Pakistan sides, so important for our wins and has been doing

well for the last few years. He is really performing well with an average of 54 which is great and we always love the way he plays and the way he helps e v e r y o t h e r p l a y e r, especially the youngsters and it's an honour to play with him." Inzamam-ul-Haq narrowly failed to take the record off Miandad in 2007 when he was stumped for 3 in his final Test innings against South Africa in Lahore. (Espncricinfo)

Who is running world football?

Issa Hayatou

It's an organization that has billions of dollars in its coffers but is still using antiquated fax machines to do business. It was just another day at FIFA, another crisis, as the organizations head honchos were hauled up before the organization's disciplinary committee. Sepp Blatter, the president of world football's governing body, and the man who wants to replace him, Michel Platini, head of UEFA, were both hit with 90-day suspensions. There was also a 90-day

ban for Jerome Valcke, the general secretary, with the ethics committee investigating allegations he participated in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets on the black market. All three have just 48 hours to appeal -and those appeals must be sent in to FIFA not by email -- but by fax. But while the trio are plotting their next move, who is running world football? Issa Hayatou is the man charged with leading FIFA while Blatter is serving his

suspension by virtue of being the longest-serving vice president. Hayatou, who hails from Cameroon, is the head of the African Football Confederation and has served on the executive committee since 1990. In 2011, Hayatou was reprimanded by the International Olympics Committee's ethics commission after admitting he was paid by FIFA's former marketing agency International Sport and Leisure back in 1995.

The BBC's Panorama program claimed Hayatou received around $20,000 from ISL. He has denied any corruption and stated that the money was a gift for his confederation. The 69-year-old attempted to become FIFA president in 2002 but was swept aside by Blatter in the election. He has confirmed that he has no intention to stand for the role on February 26 next year. With Blatter not standing for reelection and Platini's future uncertain, the race for the

FIFA presidency -- which will conclude on February 26 -- just took another twist. Anyone hoping to stand must declare their intention to do so by October 26. Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein, who was defeated by Blatter in May's election, is currently favorite for the role. South African Tokyo Sexwale, a former political prisoner and friend of the late Nelson Mandela, could also be a surprise candidate. Sexwale has

been part of FIFA's antidiscrimination taskforce and has worked on helping foster a relationship between the football associations of Israel and Palestine. He was also a founding member of the Makana Football Association, an unofficial football organization for apartheid-era prisoners on Robben Island. Former Brazil star Zico and Musa Bility, chairman of the Liberian FA, have also announced their plans to stand. (CNN)

SP RTS MCDONALD TRIUMPHS IN BAKEWELL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP It was clear that Mark McDonald had lots to prove in Saturday's Boys U18 finals against Heimraj Resaul, after being defeated by Resaul, 2-4, 4-0, (10-4), the previous day in the Boys U14 finals at the GBTI Recreational, Bel Air. In the Boys U18, McDonald had his revenge against Resaul 2-6, 6-2, (106) to claim Bakewell Boys U18 Championship title, which adds to his 2015 GBTI Boys U18 title. McDonald fought to set himself apart from his new rivalries and secure a spot in this month's Tennis Inter Guiana Games (IGG) to be held in Suriname. It was clear that both players showed signs of nerves as the battle started for the prestigious title. Mark started off shaky with tentative ball placement, which gave Resaul confidence to pounce on every opportunity and take the first set easily.

However, at change over it was an energized McDonald that proceeded on court and he raced to a quick 4-1 lead in the second set. It was over for Resaul who appeared under the weather as McDonald stepped up his aggression, took the second set and transferred the momentum into the tiebreaker never relinquishing the lead. While in the Girls U14 Shivani Persaud tried her best to force the match against Afruica Gentle. The tiny Persaud matched the powerful hitting by Gentle but came in as runner up after Gentle displayed her thirst for the win and secured the championship title at 4-1, 4/4 (7-5). Gentle too would have won both the Girls U14 and Girls 18 categories. In the Boys U12 the promising Joshua Kalekyezi emerged as c h a m p i o n o v e r Vi r a j Sharma in straight sets 4-0, 4-2 to take the title.

C E O o f Bakewell, Ragindranauth Ganga was able to witness the last match of the day. He recognized that the tournament was bigger than its first year last year and congratulated the GTA on its effort to make tennis a prominent sport and the tournament a greater success. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) Regional Development Officer for the Caribbean, John Goede who was present, emphasized that the development of Tennis Guyana is not exclusive to the executive of the G u y a n a Te n n i s Association, but there is h e a v y d e p en d e n c y o n parents, players, sports administrative bodies and the wider Guyana. He posited, through that partnership and hard effort among those stakeholders that we can “attain and get to a quality that is an irresistible product, like Bakewell.”

ITF Regional Development Officer to the left and sponsor CEO of Bakewell, Rajindranauth Ganga to the right

He highlighted to the players after watching them play that there needs to be a strategy or a plan in life and this should also apply to playing a match on court. Aggression and fitness, he pointed out were key areas to be worked on. He said for tennis to take off in Guyana, there needs to be more courts. “These two courts are not enough. Probably we need

about 24 courts in Georgetown with lighting. We n e e d a b o u t t h r e e hundred players.” This he said would improve the quality of competition and players in general. President of the GTA, Grace McCalman, on that note, announced plans to develop tennis in Berbice, Linden and outlying regions. This would significantly

contribute to a bigger tournament by expanding competitions and drawing entries from a wider cross section of players. The ITF Regional Development Officer will be meeting with sports stakeholders, parents and conduct clinics with players during his visit to Guyana.
