This 35,000 sf fit-out for the Winston Preparatory School relocates their NY campus from its current location in Chelsea, Manhattan to a newly vacant warehouse building in Astoria Queens. The design expands their current square footage, classroom count, offices/faculty spaces, athletic areas, and focus spaces—lowlevel spaces for one on one interaction with students. As the first high school in New York City to specifically aid students with learning disabilities, the Winston Preparatory School wanted an open layout that provided opportunities for interaction between students and teachers. Classrooms run along the wester and southern facade, providing ample amounts of daylight. A new stair and opening provides access to both floors and the roof, the cafeteria and gym stacked upon one another on one side, and the focus spaces on the other. 8 foot tall perforated wood cubicles provide spaces for teachers and faculty to meet one-on-one with students without the pressure of more formal office spaces. A new roof terrace and green space provides an outdoor space with views of Manhattan and ample space for gardening during the spring. The clerestory gym window and stair allow more daylight to enter the heart of the floor plan.

The proposed design for the permanent home for the Hauppauge Public Library directly reflects the community’s desire for a modest, economical structure which is closely connected to nature. The design integrates the building massing with the surrounding landscaping by keeping all functions on one floor, in a long, low mass sitting below and wrapping around the existing canopy of trees that will seem to have grown up from within the wooded site. The s-shaped floor plan encloses two outdoor courtyards that will permit daylight to enter the building from the north and south and establish a focus for the interior spaces. The north courtyard serves as the entrance from the west parking area, and the water garden demonstrates an environmentally sensitive approach to retaining rainwater and returning wastewater to the ground. The south courtyard is contiguous with the virginal wooded, eastern portion of the site. From the interior, library visitors may use the south courtyard for reading and other passive activities and as a route to garden paths through the trees. The entrance leads to an open lobby/display area with adjacent circulation, public computers, and periodical seating areas. This continuous zone of open public space which is the connective thread through the library. A series of spaces unfold as patrons meander through the building. From any space in the library, patrons can see directly into the courtyards and to the north and south gardens—giving them a direct connection to the natural world.

A new off- site infusion clinic for the New York Hospital Queens in collaboration with the Queens Medical Associates designed to renovate and expand QMA's existing space to meet Article 28 Infusion requirements. This satellite facility is one in a series of new neighborhood practices intended to raise NYHQ’s profile in the surrounding community. Located adjacent to an existing oncology clinic the new 7,000 square foot infusion center is a state of the art, Article 28 compliant facility providing a warm and welcoming environment for patients undergoing chemotherapy. A series of large recessed coffers in the ceiling with skylights will provide natural light from above; wood paneled partitions with natural plantings and soft seating will separate the infusion cubicle spaces and a large lounge and cafe with windows and a library will provide a respite for family members. In order to ensure that the infusion center may stay operational during construction, the project has been designed to occur in three separate phases. To expand the existing infusion space, a separate primary care tenant is relocated elsewhere in the building. Then the expanded infusion center is built in its place. Finally, the existing infusion space is renovated and joined with the expanded space to provide continuous care.

This five-floor, 40,000 square foot interior encompasses the offices, workshops, training areas and technology centers for three independent, but programmatically linked organizations: PHI, ICS & CHCA. Delivering high-quality care to the disabled constituents they serve, the users required a space especially suited to the unique needs of each organization. The design provides distinct elements to make each floor, which is dedicated to a specific organization, unique. Elements common to each, such as cafĂŠs and lounges provide a sense of coherence across the build-out. Located in the top floors of a 14-story building, low walls and glass partitions provide natural light and views outdoors from essentially every office or workstation.
