El Hadji Samba Amadou Diallo, Washington University, Saint Louis West African Islam has several Sufi orders, particu larly in Northern Nigeria, Niger and Senegal, coun tries where the Tijāniyya occupies an important place in the public sphere. In the first part of this book, through a comparative perspective therefore using the concepts of democracy, secularism, dom ination and violence, the author depicts how these categories are exercised at the local level, especially in the political field.
In the second part, he engages in deciphering the complex relations between religion and politics in the so-called alternance regimes between 2000 and 2020, using a Bourdieusian approach to domi nation. Many marabouts intervene to stop the projects of personalization of the central power. The author concludes that there is a new form of community democracy that Sufi guides use to po litically stabilize Senegal.

One group of ancient Egyptian drawings has cap tured the curiosity of scholars and laypeople alike: images of animals acting like people. They illus trate animal fables originally from a larger mytho logical narrative, making them an integral part of New Kingdom Thebes’s religious environment. This book examines the purpose of animal fables, draw ing cross cultural and temporal comparisons to other storytelling and artistic traditions. This publication is also the first thorough art his torical treatment of the ostraca and papyri. The drawings’ iconography and aesthetic value are carefully examined, providing further nuance to our understanding of ancient Egyptian art.

Edward L. Shaughnessy Seeking for signs of the future was a basic component of the pre-modern European mindset. The great variety of signs that are reviewed in the set of articles present commentaries on the time of their creation, whereas signs of the future display an am biguous character. Combining meticulous analysis with macroscopic interpretation, this book pioneers in study ing the Sinicizing process of Buddhist disciplinary rituals as they spread from India to China in the medieval period.

Japanese Morphography Deconstructing hentai kanbun
In Japanese Morphography, Gordian Schreiber takes an in-depth look at texts from pre-modern Japan written exclu sively in Chinese characters as morphograms and demonstrates why the language behind the script is, in fact, to be identified as Japanese rather than Chinese.

This book draws on historical demography to elucidate the regional diversity of the Japanese family and its convergence toward an integrated national family model that heralded the modern era, providing a new image of the family in pre-industrial Japan. The volume challenges the idea of early modern (1600-1870) Japan as a monolithic nation based on the ie, – the stem-family household so often mentioned as the fundamental form of Japanese social organi zation and enshrined in the Meiji Civil Code – which, in fact, came into being at various locales, at various speeds in the latter half of the 18th and the earlier half of the 19th centuries. In addition, there are several chapters which examine the role of women, either centrally or tangentially.

Paul R. Moore, University College London Targum Canticles, composed in the dialectally eclectic idiom of Late Jewish Literary Aramaic (LJLA), had immense historic popularity among Jewish communities worldwide. In this work, Paul R. Moore thoroughly analyses several of the Targum’s grammatical peculiarities, overlooked by previous studies. Through this prism, he consid ers its literary influences, composition, and LJLA as a precursor of the highly eccentric Aramaic of the 13th century Spanish cabalistic masterpiece, The Zohar. The study includes transcriptions and analysis of the previously unpublished of frag ments of the Targum from the Cairo Geniza, and what is possibly its earliest, known translation into Judaeo-Arabic.

Why has early childhood sci ence education taken so long to become established as a field of research inquiry? Why do we continue to blame early child hood and primary teachers for their lack of confidence and competence in science educa tion? This book tackles these questions and more. This book explores how the Italian education system re sponded to distance learning during the first wave of the pan demic. The impact of the hard lockdown on both teaching and learning revealed the inherent weaknesses of a system in which digital technology had only re cently been introduced and high lighted the relevant inequalities in their access and use.

In Trust in the Catholic Reformation Thérèse Peeters shows how trust and distrust affected reform at tempts in the post-Tridentine Church, while offer ing a multifaceted account of day-to-day religiosity in seventeenth-century Genoa, a city that has been generally overlooked in Anglophone scholarship.
The Contemplacioun of Synnaris, by the Observant Franciscan William Touris, written c.1494 and evidently intended for King James IV of Scotland, is a significant and much copied work of Older Scots, although the earliest surviving witness is the English print by Wynkyn de Worde (1499). The Contemplacioun was the very first work of Older Scots literature to be translated and to be printed. The work retained sufficient interest to re-emerge in separate versions in both Scotland (1568) and England (1578), drastically revised for Protestant readers.
The book addresses diverse aspects of early mod ern Catholicism among lay people and members of the clergy.

Creating and Sharing Legal Knowledge in the Twelfth Century Sankt Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, 673 and Its Context
This volume provides deep insights into the dynamics and processes of knowledge creation and transfer in the Middle Ages by analysing the manuscript Sankt Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, 673 – an important textual witness for the creation of the Decretum Gratiani. The book presents a critical edition and translation of a newly discovered early Irish legal text on lost and stolen property, Aidbred, and also includes editions of two other texts concerning property found on land, Heptad 64, and at sea, Muirbretha. A new assessment of baron d’Holbach (1723-1789), his works, his circle and his legacy, gath ering together generations of d’Holbach scholars to analyse multiple aspects of his diverse intellectual commitment from fresh perspectives.
READERSHIP: The volume is intended for scholars, research ers, and graduate students, but anyone interested in the Enlightenment or the history of ideas in general can readily follow and benefit from the dis cussions.

This volume ex plores the ways in which horses shaped medieval societies. The Ends of Time in NinthCentury Constantinople
READERSHIP: Scholars and students of Byzantium and the Eastern Mediterranean, and any one with interests in early me dieval historical texts and Greek historiography.
Edited by Johannes Heil, Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg, and Sumi Shimahara, Sorbonne Université This book provides new per spectives on the formation of Western intellectual history by contextualizing both Christian and Jewish exegesis from Theodulf of Orléans to Rashi (800–1100).
This volume contains work by scholars actively publishing on origin legends across early me dieval western Europe, from the fall of Rome to the high Middle Ages. Its thematic structure cre ates dialogue between texts and regions traditionally studied in isolation. Why the ninth-century Chronographia of George and Theophanes so dominated the writing of history in Greek has long puzzled scholars. This re visionist study frames the work as an early medieval society’s re-thinking of the relationship between past and present in order to navigate its imminent political crises.

With little warning, COVID-19 quickly escalated into a generational crisis, creating sustained havoc seen perhaps only in past cases of war, attack, and natural disasters. In the bedlam of the early months, health, science, political, and economic communities were hit with sudden force, required to quickly shift and rearrange the normal order of work. In arbitration, leaders took imperfect infor mation to make dramatic decisions. In process and procedure, arbitral institutions, arbitrators, legal counsel, and clients were swept into this turmoil. In some cases, bold initiatives, still in design and testing, were quickly put into service, upsetting norms and traditions and the very notions of tradi tional process.

Networked Practices and Sanctions Implementation
READERSHIP: The book targets scholars and practitioners of sanctions, geoeconomics, and economic statecraft as well as those focusing on the intersection of diplomacy studies, international practice theory, and foreign policy implementation.
Kim B. Olsen, German Council on Foreign Relations When policy-makers opt for sanctions or other eco nomic power instruments in response to geostra tegic challenges, the stage is set for geoeconomic diplomacy. Challenging traditional conceptions about the interplay between governments and markets, this book sheds a new light on the diplo matic actors and processes that shape successful geoeconomic foreign and security policy-making.
Unpacking the ‘networked practices’ through which diplomats advanced the early implementa tion of the European Union’s far-reaching sanc tions regimes against Russia and Syria, the book demonstrates how geoeconomic diplomats depend on their abilities to navigate in complex actor-net works in the interfaces between the public, private, and non-governmental realm.

The Case of Piotrków Trybunalski
This quantitative study of Piotrków Trybunalski traces the evolution of the population in the typi cal early modern semi-agrarian town in which the majority of activity was concentrated in the Jewish suburbs into a provincial capital in Congress Poland. Through the use of longitudinal aggrega tions and family reconstruction it explores fertility, mortality, and marriage patterns from the early nineteenth century, when civil records were intro duced, until the Holocaust, revealing key differ ences as well as striking similarities between local Jews and non-Jews. The example of Piotrków set in a broader European context highlights variations in the pre-transitional demography of Ashkenazi Jewry and lack of universal model describing the “traditional” or “eastern European” Jewish family.

An Introduction to the Japonic Languages
Grammatical Sketches of Japanese Dialects and Ryukyuan Languages
Edited by Michinori Shimoji, Kyushu University Japanese is definitely one of the best-known languages in typological literature. For example, typologists often assume that Japanese is a nominative-accusative language. However, it is often overlooked that Japanese, or more precisely, Tokyo Japanese, is just one of various lo cal varieties of the Japonic language family (Japanese and Ryukyuan). In fact, the Japonic languages exhibit a surprising typological diversity. For example, some varieties display a split-intransitive as opposed to nominative-accusative system. The present volume is thus a unique attempt to explore the typological diversity of Japonic by providing a collection of grammatical sketches of various local varieties, four from Japanese dialects and five from Ryukyuan.

This volume offers an overview of its fortunes since French emerged as a language, provides a descrip tion of its distinctive features, and discusses the potential impact of its supposed demise on the whole French verb system. Edited by Jutta Ernst , Dagmar von Hoff and Oliver Scheiding The Western Reinvention of Chinese Literature, 1910-2010
From Ezra Pound to Maxine Hong Kingston
During much of China’s tumultuous 20th cen tury, May 4th and Maoist iconoclasts regarded their classical literary heritage as a burden to be dislodged in the quest for modernization. This volume demonstrates how the traditions that had deeply impressed earlier generations of Western writers like Goethe and Voltaire did not lose their lustre; to the contrary, a fascination with these past riches sprouted with renewed vigour among Euro-American poets, novelists, and other cultural figures after the fall of imperial China in 1911.

Baghdād From Its Beginnings to the 14th Century
Edited by Jens Scheiner and Isabel Toral Baghdād: From its Beginnings to the 14th Century offers an exhaustive handbook that covers all pos sible themes connected to the history of this urban complex in Iraq, from its origins rooted in late antique Mesopotamia up to the aftermath of the Mongol invasion in 1258. Against the common perception of a city founded 762 in a vacuum, which, after experiencing a heyday in a mythical “golden age” under the early ʿAbbāsids, entered since 900 a long period of decline that ended with a complete collapse by savage people from the East in 1258, the volume emphasizes the continuity of Baghdād’s urban life, and shows how it was marked by its destiny as ca liphal seat and cultural hub.

This book presents an analysis of the hymns of Isaac Watts in their biographical, biblical, theo logical, liturgical, poetic, musi cal, and practical dimensions, showing how the combination of these factors led to their wide spread and enduring use. This historical survey of Quakers in the United States and their responses to war from World War I through the Vietnam conflict demonstrates that Quakers’ responses to war resulted from internal struggles and the influ ence of the state.

The present volume sets Swahili religious tracts available in Kenya and Tanzania in their context. The book starts with an overview of tracts in Swahili from the 19th century to the present day, an examination of Swahili as a religious language, and an introduction to Swahili versions of the Bible and Qurʾān. Chesworth then introduces the range of tracts currently available, examining eight in detail. In particular he considers how they present scripture in order to promote their own faith, Islam or Christianity, whilst denigrating the ‘other’.

In the first book-length study of Thomas Vaughan (1621-1666), Thomas Willard builds on recent scholarship in Western esotericism to show that his curious books offer much more than the lively quo tations extracted from them. Treating more than alchemy and the Hermetic tradition, they develop themes from the synthesis of alchemy, magic, and Christian cabala, associated associated with the Rosicrucian movement that Vaughan introduced to English readers.

Steven E. Hijmans, University of Alberta, Canada With this analysis of Sol images, Steven E. Hijmans paints a new picture of the solar cult in ancient Rome. The paucity of literary evidence led Hijmans to prioritize visual sources, and he opens this study with a thorough discussion of the theoretical and methodologi cal issues involved. Emphasizing the danger of facile equivalencies between visual and verbal meanings, his primary focus is Roman praxis, manifest in, for instance, the strict patterning of Sol imagery. These patterns encode core concepts that Sol imagery evoked when deployed, and in those concepts we recognize the bedrock of Rome’s understandings of the sun and his cult. Case studies illustrate these concepts in action and the final chapter analyzes the historical con text in which previous, now discredited views on Sol could arise.
