Dear Friends and Readers, The Deutscher Kunstverlag has been an imprint of De Gruyter since 2018. In recent years the Deutscher Kunstverlag and the art history team of De Gruyter have worked intensively and in close cooperation on elaborating the program. The mutual enrichment plays an important part in this — both in the further development of our publication formats ranging from open access to high-quality catalogues, as well as on the level of content-related topics. Despite the different traditions of the two publishing houses, which we will continue to preserve and cultivate in the future, we have taken the interweaving of our programs as an opportunity for a new feature: for the first time in this preview, no distinction is made between the publications of our respective publishing houses. The important, nearly forgotten German-Jewish museum expert and art collector Curt Glaser (1879–1943) was forced to emigrate by the National Socialists and sold the majority of his art holdings in Berlin in 1933. Through the whereabouts of works once owned by him, the Kunstmuseum Basel reached an agreement with Glaser’s heirs that is recognized internationally as “best practice,” and in connection with this is honoring Glaser’s work in an exhibition. The catalogue provides richly illustrated insights into Glaser’s fascinating collection, with works by Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, and Henri Matisse. Essays link new research on this advocate of modernism and his collecting of modern art and embed his fate in current questions connected with formerly Jewish art holdings in public museums. Vienna is one of the biggest art and culture metropolises in Europe. In addition to the imperial collections, numerous important collections emerged here, in particular starting in the seventeenth century and into the modern era. The biographies brought together here deal not only with viceroys, ministers of state and ambassadors, merchants, businessmen and bankers, but also with composers, painters, art dealers, and art historians. The focus is on collectors who are less well known today, who are documented in detail for the first time here based on contemporary sources. Among the central questions are the collectors’ motivations and acquisition strategies, as well as the preservation and presentation of the objects. The eruption of Vesuvius in the year AD 79 signified a collective trauma; it revealed the fragility of the civilized world. Contemporaries explained the catastrophe from the perspective of the natural sciences, mythology or from the viewpoint of religion. Not only Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring utilized the occupation of France during the Second World War to procure artworks for their collections — German museums also made acquisitions at the time. Hildebrand Gurlitt was one of the art dealers who were commissioned to sell so-called “degenerate” artworks confiscated from German museums in 1937. 12 CoBrA is one of the most important artist groups of Art Informel. The name is derived from the first letters of the three capital cities of Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam — the centers from which the CoBrA artists took action. Little is still known here in Germany about the concrete origins of the art movement. The exhibition and catalogue of the same name attempts a broad examination of the group’s origins: with the focus on the reconstruction of the movement prior to its official establishment in November 1948. It aims to present a representative cross-section of the movement that includes the largest possible number of artists as well as the greatest possible concentration of forms of expression and topics characteristic of the movement. Roughly fifty paintings, thirty sculptural works, fifty graphic reproductions and photographs as well as individual ceramics and textiles from international collections are presented. A richly illustrated book of hours was produced in the surroundings of the Parisian court at the beginning of the sixteenth century, presumably commissioned by Philippa von Geldern (1467–1546), Princess of Lower Saxony and later Duchess of Lorraine. Jean Coene IV, one of the few illuminators of the time who is known by name, furnished the unusual work with a completely illustrated calendar and twenty-four — of formerly twenty-seven — large miniatures. The book of hours, which is privately owned, is now being presented to the public in its entirety for the first time — accompanied by an examination of the role of the client and of the classification of Jean Coene IV as an illuminator Roll within the context of Parisian book art around 1500.

Rubens’s The Crucifixion of Saint Peter still hangs today in the location for which it was created, in the parish church of St. Peter in Cologne. Thanks to the beneficence of the merchant Eberhard III Jabach and his wife, Anna Reuter, the painter from Antwerp produced this final, very personal picture. Until today, The Crucifixion of Saint Peter continues to be shown in the location for which it was created. The occasion for an in-depth inter-disciplinary engagement with this work was an examination of its condition, which led to the current examina-tions and the restoration of the work. Signatures on works of art are characterized by their many-sidedness. They consist of letters and simultaneously have graphic qualities as well. The essays in the book take a look at signing practices from the Middle Ages and the modern era based on the example et al. of Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, and Rembrandt. They address aspects of authorship and artistic identity, the intermedial interplay between text and picture, and the intellectual horizons of artists in various cultural milieus in Europe. The technical execution of signatures is thus also examined, as well as the use of different fonts. New perspectives on signatures of artworks are thus developed based on the connection between art-historical, philological, and restoration questions.

The imperial imagination fueled with codes of galanterie was very developed in the circles of Watteau’s amateurs. From Watteau’s Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera (1717) to its visual reenactment in 1763, the book argues that galanterie served as a visual and conceptual model of French commercial and colonial relations.

28 Motoric-mechanical drawing techniques like tracing, copying, and cut and paste are among the fundamental workshop practices of the pre-modern era. They were also used in the training of renowned artists like Leonardo, Dürer, Michelangelo, and Rubens in order to modify designs, expand the supply of motifs, and produce new artworks. In the art theory of the time, however, they were largely ignored or even disparaged. It is only possible to take note of a few positions that show appreciation for these techniques until the decisive ennoblement of copying in the eighteenth century. The discrepancy between the importance of drawing techniques in practice and the addressing of them in art theory was overlooked for a long time. This is the first book on the boundary-pushing practice of the artist, dancer, and educator Suzanne Harris (1940–1979). Harris was a protagonist in key avant-garde projects of the downtown New York City artists’ community in the 1970s (the Anarchitecture group, 112 Greene Street, FOOD, The Natural History of the American Dancer, Heresies); yet her own oeuvre fell into abeyance. Francis La Flesche (1857–1932) lived between two worlds: as an Umonhon (Omaha), he fought for their rights, and as a scholar he researched his own culture. He is regarded as the first indigenous ethnologist of North America and stands representatively for the many indigenous protagonists without whom ethnological collections would never have come into being. We are no longer familiar with most of these individuals, since the focus until today has been on European and North American collectors. Francis La Flesche is an exception: his work provides insights into indigenous agency and their resistance to racism and colonialism as well as their active participation in the trade with objects. The book presents La Flesche’s records of the objects, the collection of which he contributed to what is today the Ethnological Museum in Berlin in 1894 — an impressive testimony to his successful efforts to preserve the culture of the Omaha for future generations. 40 This volume examines periodic changes in color design in medieval churches during the 19th and 20th century. What thus catches the eye is the alternation of phases that brought forth sacred spaces with reduced color and even visible stone and such spaces that strove for colorfulness. The ideologies that stand behind this process are analyzed by considering exemplary restoration measures in individual church buildings against the backdrop of the respective self-conception of monument maintenance, but also more general societal notions.

The Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design engendered the novel type of (industrial) designer. All three reform processes were distinguished by the workshop principle and close cooperation with industry, innovative teaching as well as the development of novel forms of housing, living and communication. For a long time, the topic of far-left currents within Bauhaus was one of controversy. Thanks to recent research on the Communist Student Fraction (Kostufra), the leftist students are finally coming into focus. Their magazine: bauhaus. sprachrohr der studierenden. organ der kostufra was a venue for unsparing critique of events, curricula, and teachers. The journal was published between 1930 and 1932 in Dessau and Berlin in 15 hectographed issues in a loose-leaf collection and is critically discussed here for the first time by researchers from art and cultural studies, architecture, and editorial studies. It clearly demonstrates that the experimental value of Bauhaus cannot be separated from its political radicalism.

The Belvedere was erected in 1788–89 based on plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans. As its function and name, “schöne Aussicht,” already reveal, the tower-like building once provided a broad panorama over the city. The Mausoleum, the burial site of Queen Luise of Prussia, draws the most visitors until today. Friedrich Wilhelm III chose the end of a dark avenue of fir trees as the location to lay his deceased young wife to rest. The Neuer Pavillon, an Italianate villa, is located close to the Spree. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed this masterpiece of neoclassical architecture as a private refuge for Friedrich Wilhelm III.

The volume contributes to specifying terms such as remnant, trash, traces, and boundaries more precisely within the context of the museum and to reassessing them for debates in conservation, curating, art history, and museum anthropology.

By the end of the 18th century, notions of “forces of nature” (Naturkräfte) were increasingly discussed across disciplinary bounds: attraction and repulsion, vital forces and electric fluids, formative drives and biological organisms were examined as forces linked to ‘natural’ processes. German Romantic literature, science, and philosophy — from Schelling and Novalis to Günderrode and Hölderlin — pondered interrelated notions of forces considered as dynamic and continually active in nature — forces which, in turn, also appeared to shape human actions, social structures, and cultural developments. This volume explores the points of reference for, approaches to, and afterlives of Romantic conceptions and representations of natural forces at the intersection of natural sciences and cultural imaginaries.

Roman Kurzmeyer, curator; he teaches art theory and exhibition history at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel “Exorcism and Psychoanalysis” is the title of a book by Hugo Ball that was planned but never realized. Ball, with his partner Emmy Hennings, was one of the founding figures of Dadaism in Zurich after abandoning his studies of philosophy and working in theater. However, they soon abandoned Dadaism and pursued a religious way of life until Ball’s early death. Sketches, dispositions, and notations for the book project from Ball’s bequeathed papers have been made available for the first time in transcribed and edited facsimile form.
