THE BROADVIEW ANTHOLOGY OF BRITISH LITERATURE, VOLUME 2 The Renaissance and the Early Seventeenth Century, Third Edition Edited by Joseph Black et al 2016 1,201pp 9781554812905 Paperback US$59.95
For the third edition of this volume, a considerable number of changes have been made. Newly prepared is a substantial selection from Baldassare Castiglione’s The Courtier, presented in Thomas Hoby’s influential early modern English translation. Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy is another major addition. Also new to the anthology are excerpts from Thomas Dekker’s plague pamphlets. Broadview have considerably expanded their representation of Elizabeth I’s writings and speeches, as well as providing several more cantos from Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene and adding selections from Sir Philip Sidney’s Arcadia. They have broadened their coverage, too, to include substantial selections of Irish, Gaelic Scottish, and Welsh literature. This third edition features two new Contexts sections: a sampling of ‘Tudor and Stuart Humor’, and a section on ‘Levellers, Diggers, Ranters, and Covenanters’. New materials on emblem books and on manuscript culture have also been added to the ‘Culture: A Portfolio’ contexts section. “… sets a new standard by which all other anthologies of British Literature will now have to be measured.” – Graham Hammill, SUNY Buffalo

THE BROADVIEW ANTHOLOGY OF TUDOR DRAMA General Editor: Alan Stewart
May 2021 664pp 9781554814114 Paperback US$59.95
English drama between the late fifteenth century and the late sixteenth century is as diverse as it is engaging. This anthology brings together eighteen of the most interesting and important dramatic works from the period. The plays have been chosen to give a broad view of the drama produced in Tudor England. They testify to the eclectic tastes of sixteenth-century audiences, ranging from morality plays (Mankind, Everyman), to comedies inspired by the Roman plays of Terence and Plautus (Ralph Roister Doister), to tragedies inspired by the plays of Seneca (Gorboduc, Cambises). In later plays, morality plots rub shoulders with slapstick comic business (The Longer Thou Livest The More Fool Thou Art, The Three Ladies of London), and classical gods intervene in the affairs of England’s regions (Gallathea). Designed for undergraduate use, the anthology includes extensive explanatory annotations and a substantial introduction to each play; spelling and punctuation have been partially modernised in the interests of making the texts more accessible to students. “This anthology will become the new standard. If you want to take up the pleasures of studying, teaching, or just reading Tudor drama, this collection is for you.” - Kent Cartwright, University of Maryland

Combining reality and magic, Shakespeare creates an uncanny but morally coherent world through the The Tempest’s genre, design, themes, and characters. This edition features a variety of interleaved materials that expand upon allusions in the play and explore elements of its stagecraft.
THE ALCHEMIST
Twelfth Night has been performed for its romantic high comedy and its boisterous low comedy; with an emphasis on farce or on autumnal melancholy; as straightforward celebration of heterosexual love and marriage or as exploration of the complexity of gender. David Carnegie and Mark Houlahan’s introduction provides a discussion of the play’s performance history, and encourages readers to think about stagecraft and the play as a performance text.
