A transport crossroads, promoting the movement of people and freight in a globalised world, Geneva International Airport (AIG) is also a tool that serves its region, enabling the influence of international Geneva, the development of the local economy and the growth of business and leisure tourism. AIG is also a public corporation, heavily involved in the regional economy, generating numerous direct jobs and having a noteworthy indirect and induced impact. This continuously evolving role is clearly accompanied today by social and environmental responsibility at every level. Finally, AIG is especially a place of travel, a place of transit and a place of leisure, as much for the local Swiss and French population as for customers it receives. In this respect, quality of service, punctuality and efficiency remain among the essential values to which all the site’s staff are committed.

4 Geneva International Airport: a business
Geneva International Airport (AIG) became an autonomous public body in 1994. A dynamic business of 650 employees, representing 140 occupations, it is managed by an independent board of directors. Over half its annual turnover — of more than CHF 250 million — is generated by non-aeronautical activities. AIG operates under the control of OFAC/FOCA, the body concerned with aeronautical policy and the supervision of Swiss civil aviation. An important economic centre The airport site brings together 150 companies and authorities, comprising a total of over 8,500 closely linked jobs. Geographically, it is situated in a highly concentrated business area (Rectangle of Gold, including notably the Geneva Palexpo congress centre, the World Trade Center, the International Chamber of Commerce and several hotels). According to studies, its total economic impact is 24,000 jobs generated and its total annual direct and indirect contribution to the region's economy worth CHF 9 billion.

A strong identity AIG is characterised by a strong business culture resting first and foremost on the respect of a Charter, but also on a policy based above all on people and quality of service. And it is completely logical that ISO 9001 certification crowns a desire for quality at every level, which is also shown in various reference studies. A long and rich history Opened in 1920, AIG constructed its first concrete runway in 1937. In 1949, its first terminal was planned for 300,000 passengers a year and was enlarged less than 20 years later to handle 5 million passengers a year. An integrated railway station was established in 1987 and the 'charter terminal' opened in 1988. In 2000 the West Wing, a new extension of the main terminal, entered service and, at the end of 2004, the New Frontal Departure Lounges (NSEF) was inaugurated, offering passengers every modern convenience.

6 Highly dynamic aviation activity
With annual traffic of 10 million passengers, more than 160,000 movements and almost 60,000 tonnes of freight, Geneva International Airport (AIG) ranks among the major medium-sized airports. Highly dynamic, it enjoys annual traffic growth of between 5% and 10% and starts each year with numerous new routes. An international and business oriented airport Aeronautical activity is focused mainly on scheduled (over 90%) and international traffic. More than half of its passenger traffic is travelling for a professional reason, particularly in connection with the area’s diplomatic, commercial and banking role, and the proportion of frequent travellers is very high when compared internationally. Great variety of services AIG offers a range of over 40 airlines serving almost 100 scheduled destinations by direct flights. The intercontinental network covers North America, the Near East and Middle East and North Africa. Most European capitals and important tourism and business cities are linked to Geneva by several flights a day. The major airline alliances are strongly represented, particularly Star Alliance through the presence of Swiss. In addition, easyJet Switzerland, the airport’s top client, and Flybaboo, the young regional carrier, have their operational base at Geneva.

A highly developed low-cost sector Ranking today among the main bases of the easyJet group, AIG has been one of the first traditional airports to open up to low-cost airlines. Its human scale, operational flexibility and reasonable costs have appealed to these new players in the market. This area of activity has grown strongly, to the point of representing almost one-third of scheduled traffic, and with 25 destinations. Business aviation Due to its ideal size, the airport can pride itself on welcoming several major players – PrivatAir, JetAviation, TAG Aviation and Transairco, to name a few – which have important bases, meeting in particular the demand from international business circles.

8 Tailor-made partnership and pro-active commercial policy
Working with the airlines, Geneva International Airport (AIG) has developed an integrated marketing approach to increase awareness of air services and increase local customer loyalty. It also makes available feasibility studies for the launching of new routes, facilitates contacts between carriers and the partners involved, and ensures follow-up operations. A competitive airport In the context of strong competition between airports, AIG has set up an incentive tariff policy aimed at reducing landing charges for airlines operating new routes. In addition, AIG has for many years maintained a very low level of airport charges, therefore making it one of Europe's most competitive airports in terms of quality/price ratio. Being the owner of numerous buildings on site, AIG also rents office and commercial space to third parties.
Market and feasibility studies Due to its expertise and powerful statistical tools, AIG can produce detailed projections on the feasibility and profitability of new routes. Market research undertaken covers the quantitative and qualitative aspects of potential traffic, enabling airlines to minimise commercial risk and optimise their approach to clients and distribution.

10 An unusually rich market
Whether it is humanitarian or human rights, the environment or ecology, biomedical science or information technologies, the Geneva area is home to a unique concentration of economic and diplomatic expertise, and also to international decision-making bodies. A multitude of international organisations Geneva is home to the second world headquarters of the United Nations, more than 20 governmental organisations and almost 500 non-governmental organisations (NGO) in all fields. The canton of Vaud itself is home to the headquarters of several sporting organisations. Many enterprises of stature and prestige Quality of life, a qualified workforce and excellent air links explain in part the presence of a large number of multinationals, watch makers and private banks. Geneva, top location for major meetings Across the world, the name Geneva is associated with numerous large-scale events —summits, international conferences and specialist shows such as the International Car Show and the International Fine Watchmaking Exhibition. For this purpose, less than 300 m from AIG, the 120,000 sq m Geneva Palexpo can accommodate any gathering in the best possible conditions. In addition to the quality of life and the security and organisation that Geneva holds dear, the Airport naturally plays a vital role in holding these events.

A vast catchment area AIG provides services for a vast cross-border area at the heart of Europe, comprising all of French-speaking Switzerland, an important part of the Rh么ne-Alpes region (France) and the Val d'Aoste (Italy). Some six million inhabitants live within two hours by car or public transport. A high propensity to travel This area is characterised by a high population density and especially by one of the highest standards of living in Europe. Each year the consumption of travel is on average two to three times higher than in neighbouring countries. And this tendency is reinforced by trips linked to the area's economic and diplomatic activity.

12 A welcoming area
Between Switzerland and France, Geneva International Airport (AIG) takes its place at the heart of an exceptional natural area including Lake Leman and major places of interest. Geneva: an essential stop The harbour and its water fountain, the flower clock and St. Pierre Cathedral, the Wall of the Reformers and the famous Palace of Nations: so many evocative names that make Geneva a tourism-must in Europe. The area's top tourist destinations It takes less than two hours to reach Lausanne, Annecy, Montreux, Château de Chillon, Gruyère or Berne. Access to these places of interest is also made easier from Pays de Gex (France) via the Airport's French sector. All the mountains a step away By car, coach or train, it takes between one and three hours to reach the 200 or so ski stations of the three Alps, of which the most famous are: Chamonix and Mont-Blanc, Avoriaz, Courchevel or Val d'Isère for France; Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, or Crans-Montana, Verbier or Gstaad for Switzerland; and Courmayeur for Italy. A festival of festivals The area has a great cultural wealth. Programmes of festivals and events certainly emphasise theatre, dance, cinema and music (notably Paléo and Montreux Jazz Festival). Added to these are events such as the Geneva Festival, whose famous fireworks attract spectators from all over the world.

An ideal destination for business tourism AIG plays an important role in attracting business clients. Geneva tourism figures certainly show an impressive number of stays of this type. To respond to the demand, Geneva has created a hotel infrastructure that offers a unique concentration of fourand five-star establishments. Other congress cities (Lausanne and Montreux) also strengthen the role of AIG. International tourism The diversity and quality of the centres of interest in the Airport's catchment area explain the passion for, and international dimension of, the area's tourism. Among visitors from five continents, the Americans and Japanese are the most numerous, while numbers of Chinese and Indian visitors are markedly up.

14 First-class client services and facilities
Legendary Swiss quality, synonymous with precision and efficiency, pushes Geneva International Airport (AIG) towards constant improvement for its clients, travellers and others. Courtesy and a sense of hospitality are golden rules for all the partners. Client service: AIG comes top Swiss quality, efficiency, reliability, enterprise culture and hospitality: international satisfaction surveys have shown that AIG scores well in its class. It has also obtained excellent results for accessibility and signage, cleanliness, the speed of its walkways and the efficiency of its passenger services. Everything under the same roof Departures and Arrivals are brought together in the same place, providing great ease of access for the passenger. The improvement of all facilities, renovation of the lounges, establishment of business services and construction of modern and spacious frontal departure lounges have recently helped to make AIG among the most practical and comfortable of airports. A human airport The new facilities' acoustics and lighting have been designed to improve overall comfort and immerse the passenger in a pleasant environment conducive to travel.

Valuable time saving From baggage reclaim to the car park, it is only 50 metres, and 300 metres to the station. And some 100 check-in desks in Departures minimise waiting time, even in peak periods. In addition, the latest equipment — 'Checky', a system of automatic terminals shared by most of the airlines and permitting the check-in of passengers and their baggage, and boarding card readers and even an ultramodern baggage sorting system — speeds up traffic and increases security and comfort. Easy access from France Finally, because of its geographical location, AIG has a French sector permitting easy access by customs route from France. Flights to Paris and French provincial cities are therefore treated as domestic flights, in terms of customs and police checks.

16 Advanced aeronautical facilities
Thanks to high-performance and functional runway-related facilities, Geneva International Airport (AIG) enables airlines to keep moving in all circumstances, with the highest punctuality and shortest possible stopover time. All aircraft, all the time and in all weathers All existing types of aircraft can operate on the main runway, which is 3,900 metres long and equipped with an ILS category III radio guidance system. In addition, the layout of the premises is such that the wind regime, which is particularly stable, allows operations in any meteorological conditions. In the case of snow, for example, the airport's equipment enables highly efficient operations. Optimal organisation In normal operation, AIG manages 38 movements an hour. This is thanks to the organisation of the traffic areas, the 55 mostly contact parking positions for commercial traffic — connected to a fuel hydrant fuelling system — and the close co-operation of Skyguide's air navigation services. Totally automated baggage handling The optical reading baggage sorting system is capable of handling 4,200 bags per hour. Moreover, the screening of hold baggage is 100% assured by means of the latest 'intelligent' machines.

Flexibility and speed AIG's human scale gives it great flexibility, enabling it to offer targeted and efficient services. Airlines are offered choice in all operational areas, between various independent service providers. Ground assistance can be entrusted to Swissport or Jet Aviation, from checking-in passengers to cleaning aircraft. Aircraft fuelling is carried out by two pools made up of the large oil companies. As for aviation catering, choice is ensured by Gate Gourmet, among the most important groups in the world, and Canonica Catering. Renowned maintenance Routine and heavy maintenance operations are offered to all types of aircraft by SR Technics, Jet Aviation and Transairco. Base for a vast fleet of private jets and headquarters of Europe's leading air-taxi company, AIG offers its long experience in the complete maintenance of almost all current aircraft. TAG Aviation, Jet Aviation and Transairco are each recognised as an 'Approval Major Center' by the major aircraft and helicopter manufacturers and engine makers. They are therefore qualified for the maintenance and installation of radar and radio navigation equipment and fitting of cabins. Priority for security Security is subject to particular attention, partly in response to growing passenger concern and partly to apply the strictest security-related standards currently in force. Therefore AIG's security service (including more than 160 staff, six fire-fighting vehicles, three ambulances and an advanced medical post) has to cope 24 hours a day with a wide variety of missions including aircraft safety, fire fighting, paramedical assistance, disaster relief, escorting vehicles on the apron, organising snow clearance equipment and monitoring airport entrances.

18 Strong potential for airfreight
Surrounded by companies with high added value and a centre of intense trade with the world, Geneva International Airport (AIG) plays a leading role in transportation of the region's imports and exports — a role that further strengthens a strong network of international destinations and the activity of 40 world-renowned freight forwarders. Exports-imports Watches, jewellery, chemicals and electronics are among the main exported goods. Imports consist mainly of spare parts for machines, IT equipment and perishable foodstuffs. Welcoming facilities AIG's modern 24,000 sq m freight hall can handle 100,000 tonnes of goods a year. Renovated and recent facilities include cold rooms, decompression and treatment rooms for radioactive goods, safes, and heated warehouses in winter. Two special characteristics AIG has a French sector where goods bound for the European Union can be cleared. The freight hall also has 10,000 sq m of free-ports, which offer greater flexibility in managing flows of goods and for the logistical organisation of freight companies.

An esteemed service‌ Boosted by these advantages and specialist staff, AIG today offers one of Europe's shortest freight consignment times (70 minutes on average), as well as enviable levels of reliability and security. In this context, the main express courier operators have found a favourable environment and a continuing boom in their activities. ‌and with strong potential AIG has recently strengthened the means available to create a true 'cargo culture', with all partners involved. A strategy has been set up to facilitate flows of goods to stimulate cooperation between the various players in airfreight (forwarders, airlines and handling agents) and to develop the cargo market.

Seven days a week Offering a vast range of goods and services, more than 60 sales outlets close to the city, and open 365 days a year, AIG is the area’s second-largest shopping centre. Luxury is order of the day Fashion, accessories, delicatessen and all the major brands are available to satisfy demanding clients, and there is also a large area of general food retailing. The major names of watches, jewellery and luxury are particularly well represented. Service: choice Banks and currency exchange, post and telecommunications, dry cleaning and a hairdressing salon, children’s areas, pharmacies, showers, bedrooms in the transit area and private lounges…you can do everything at AIG! In addition, a travel agent on the Arrivals level offers a full range of services. Duty-free goods: the Swiss exception Switzerland not being part of the European Union (EU), the point with Geneva is that all passengers who are about to fly (including EU nationals) can buy duty-free products (perfumes, cosmetics, tobacco and alcohol), notably in Nuance Group shops. This particular facility complements a greatly appreciated service: internet pre-ordering.

22 Exceptional multimodality
Geneva International Airport (AIG) was designed to make life easier for passengers. As shown in an international survey called IATA Airport Monitor, multimodality contributes to this. AIG is certainly one of the only airports in Europe to be situated less than 5 km from the city centre. It occupies an ideal geographical location where the principal modes of transport converge. Nearby motorway At only 300 metres from the terminal, the motorway makes it easy to join the Swiss and French road networks, and to quickly get to the area's major cities and main tourist resorts. Unbeatable railway services With more than 140 services a day, most express and Intercity trains link AIG with the entire Swiss rail network. Taking only six minutes to reach the centre of Geneva, it could not be more efficient. An exclusive system: Fly Rail This system enables the check-in of passengers and their baggage at the station of departure. A boarding card is issued and the bags are transferred automatically to the aircraft. Fly Rail also operates in the same way in reverse, from a foreign airport to the station at the final destination. A Swiss exclusive.

A vast choice of public transport Opposite the terminal, four bus services serve the city centre, the international organisations and the lakeside. This is without counting taxis, hotel shuttles and scheduled bus services to the ski resorts. Car parks: practical Renovated and plentiful car parking in front of the terminal saves passengers valuable time, whether on departure or arrival. An ambitious mobility plan To meet current environmental challenges, AIG has undertaken, that between now and 2020, 45% of passengers and employees will use public transport and non-polluting modes of transport.

24 Active policy on the environment
One of Geneva International Airport (AIG)'s main objectives is to protect the quality of the environment, as much for the Airport's neighbours as for staff and passengers. To do this, the Airport has implemented significant technical and financial measures. Emphasis on measuring noise… The latest noise monitoring systems, coupled with air safety radars (Skyguide), enable the checking of aircraft flight paths and the measurement of changes to noise levels resulting from their movements. …and air quality The impact of aeronautical activities on the air around ground level is measured by a high-performance light beam-based optical system and a fine-particle measuring tool.

25
Active incentive policy In 1980, AIG introduced a noise surcharge to encourage airlines to operate to Geneva with ever-quieter aircraft. Since 1988, AIG has also collected a surcharge on gaseous emissions. Environmental Management System Set up in 1997 to reinforce the effectiveness of measures taken, an environmental management system brings together a set of principles and procedures to evaluate the environmental repercussions of air traffic and site activities and to continually determine improvements for implementation. A dynamic and responsible programme Recent measures include the continued soundproofing of homes near the Airport, the installation of targeted waste collection points, the reduction of polluting discharges into water, and actions to limit airport-induced road traffic and reduce energy consumption.

26 Development and strategy
A long-term vision In its forecasts, Geneva International Airport (AIG) expects traffic growth to 15 million passengers a year by 2020. For the years ahead, the Airport's masterplan therefore envisages an investment programme comprising notably the extension of the terminal — to augment passenger handling capacity — and the restructuring of the retail area — with the aim of responding to the entry into force of the Schengen Accords from 2008 and the establishment of the One-Stop Security concept. Planned works come within AIG's strategy of respecting the principle of sustainable development. Service development To meet the growing needs of the local market, AIG continues to develop its services, in particular by aiming for more long-haul links to North America and new markets such as India and China. In the same spirit, the airport is maintaining its efforts to diversify airlines, both traditional and low-cost. New capacity planned Airside development continues. Following the entry into service of the West Wing and then the New Frontal Departure Lounges, AIG will develop an East Wing to offer new facilities for both passengers and airlines.

A strong enterprise culture Finally, the Airport is convinced that a strong enterprise culture is essential for longterm success. This is why it cultivates every day the very strong feeling of being a major player in the economic fabric of the area, which drives the 8,500 people employed on the airport site.
