JEFFIE BREWER Fall 2019
The Wondrous World of sculptor Jeffie Brewer
“I make things. I show people how to make things,” says Jeffie Brewer, a sculptor and well-loved professor emeritus at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. “I have an insatiable desire to create, to explore, to understand. I work with my hands. I work with my head. My intention is to provide just enough information, allowing for a narrative without delving into total non-representationalism. Leaving room for interpretation as well as a little mystery, I hope, adds to the viewing experience.” Brewer grew up in a small, rural town in East Texas. The son of eccentric junkyard owners, he learned how to spot beauty in the mundane at a young age. He also developed industrial skills and discovered that he had a knack for drawing and designing. Starting off with paintings and twodimensional art, he shifted into sculpture about a decade ago. “My work in graphic design and general fascination with pop culture are heavy influences,” he says. His sculptures, in turn, delight viewers of all ages, incorporating humor and a sense of fun into top craftsmanship. According to Brewer, his art making skill set includes: just about every tool, pencils, welders, plasma cutters, working with his hands, “being awesome,” cookie-eating, humor, criticism, spelling, you name it—and, he jokes, overconfidence. Brewer has an MFA in Sculpture and Painting and MA in Sculpture and Metals from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He also holds a BFA in Studio Art from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Brewer is prolific, with a range of sculptures available. He’s also happy to work with collectors who’d like to commission a piece, and works with them closely to create what they envision. GVG Contemporary is a gallery showcasing painting, sculpture, fine art furniture, and artist-made jewelry on the corner of historic Canyon Road and Delgado Street in Santa Fe, New Mexico, owned by husband-and-wife local artist team Ernst Gruler and Blair Vaughn-Gruler.
