Laughter, Love, and Grit: The abstract world of Lori Schappe-Youens A savant of imagination and emotion, Lori Schappe-Youens grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin before relocating to South Africa in 1992. Deeply rooted in both countries, her work has expanded her world of abstraction over the years. Recently she told Dossier Magazine of South Africa: “I have walked a rocky wild path and it is on the canvas, paper or wood substrate where I unleash my tale, my understanding of who I am and who I am becoming.” However personal, work by Schappe-Youens has wide appeal. Her bold colors and abstracted forms often conjure imagery of landscape with a bird’s eye view, perhaps a nod to her many trips between the U.S. and her home in South Africa. Perhaps because of her life’s travels, themes of home and place reoccur frequently in her paintings. “My work is a combination of spirit, humor, and sensitivity, as well as a hunger for growth,” says Schappe-Youens. “I am moved by color—by how it translates onto the substrate and plays with the eye. I love texture as it gives grit and substance to what I do—where I am—where I am going. Grit is good.” With a lot of whimsy and an iconic visual vocabulary, her paintings strike joy and resonate with insight. “I believe that there is humor in most of this life—if you look simply enough at it, and that often is translated into quite wacky, wonderful half human, half animal-insect-plants, smiling at the frailties of this human/animal condition. I paint because I have to—I will not be whole if I do not put brush or palette knife to paper or canvas.”
