Bright, Clean, and Inviting: Engine 14 Brewery, a Community Hub in Naples
Nestled in the heart of Naples, Engine 14 Brewery is more than just a place to grab a pint—it’s a bright, clean, and inviting space where community spirit thrives.
Founded by Naples native and retired Rochester Fire Department lieutenant, Greg Borden, and his wife, Kate, the brewery is a labor of love that combines a passion for classic beer styles with a commitment to bringing people together.
A Dream Ignited by Firefighting
Greg’s journey into brewing started in 1984, shortly after his marriage to Kate. As a member of the Upstate Homebrew Club in Rochester, he honed his skills and deepened his appreciation for the craft. When the
couple moved back to Naples to raise their family, brewing took a backseat until Greg’s retirement in 2019. Faced with the challenge of brewing at scale, Greg turned to Pete Hess, their “all-around beer advisor,” whom the couple calls “the final piece of the puzzle,” helping Greg return to brewing. Pete’s expertise and guidance on recipes and brewing procedures have been invaluable in helping Engine 14 achieve its current success.
Greg and Kate spent two years transforming the historic building within the Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars complex into what is now Engine 14 Brewery, named after their vintage 1953 Ward LaFrance fire truck, which proudly resides in the brewhouse. The brewery officially opened in June 2022.
ENG14INE
Classic Brews with a Creative Twist
Engine 14 specializes in crafting classic beers like Pilsners, Cream Ales, Dunkels, and Stouts, as well as a customer favorite seltzer. A flavored wheat is always on tap, and they keep things fresh with customer favorites like Freelancer, a New England IPA, and their standout Schwarzbier. The brewery is now crafting a Rauchbier, a smoked beer to keep with the firehouse theme, and plans to introduce a red lager soon. With feedback from their loyal patrons, the team continuously experiments with new flavors. Greg lauds this venture as his “stress relief,” saying that although brewing is a lot of work, he loves it.
A Community Gathering Spot
Lovingly referred to by locals as “The Engine,” the brewery has become a hub for community events, including trivia nights, cornhole leagues, euchre leagues, and live music. Its spacious taproom and open floorplan are ideal for hosting special occasions such as weddings, baby showers, and meetings. When the weather allows, the overhead doors invite the outdoors in, letting guests enjoy a comfortable atmosphere with a gentle breeze flowing through the space. In summer, they even roll the fire truck outside to create a unique and memorable gathering space.
More Than a Brewery
Engine 14’s commitment to Naples extends beyond beer. The Bordens organize fundraisers such as for the local fire department and for the past two years for the Metastatic Mafia, supporting the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. The Bordens recently crafted a new beer to raise funds for the restoration of the historic Sutton’s building, the oldest business in town.
Kate explains that Naples businesses are family and friends, spreading word about each other’s businesses above competition. “We’re all part of a bigger picture—we do what we can to help each other.” Kate loves that Engine 14 has given them the outlet to be more involved in the community. Even though the Bordens have lived in Naples for 30+ years, she says it’s amazing how many new people they meet through the brewery. The Bordens have watched the village and town of Naples grow over the years, and they are so proud and excited to be part of the community fabric with Engine 14.

Naples Trout Derby
As the chill of winter fades and spring flows into the creeks, they are stocked with rainbow trout in anticipation of the annual Rainbow Trout Derby, hosted each April 1st by the Naples Rotary Club. Anglers young and old cast away in this cherished tradition, returning for the 64th year, hoping to catch the winning trout. In the derby, participants compete in one of two categories:
1. Traditional Catch and Weigh, in which anglers bring their catch to the Naples Firehouse to be weighed and judged.
2. Catch and Release, in which contestants photograph their catch with a ruler and scale provided by the organizers, then return it directly to the creek.
Both formats cater to a variety of skill levels, with the traditional division offering categories for men, women, girls, boys, and seniors aged 65 and up. A grand prize
is awarded for the largest fish overall. Committee member Micah Moore notes that while the traditional approach remains the most popular, catch-and-release participation has been steadily growing in popularity. Regardless of category, anglers come together in community for this annual tradition.
Preregistration is required for the annual derby, and participants can sign up throughout March at Sutton’s Inn in the Village of Naples or at the Naples Firehouse from 5-9 PM March 31st or on Derby Day (April 1) from 4-7 AM.
Registration is $5 for kids and seniors and $10 for adults. All proceeds benefit the Naples Rotary Club’s community programs and initiatives. For more information, contact Micah Moore at (585) 704-5601.

Naples Grape Festival
Each fall, the Naples Valley bursts with autumnal charm, drawing thousands of visitors to the iconic Naples Grape Festival. Celebrated each September, the festival is a highlight of the harvest season and a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike. Known as “The Best Festival in the Finger Lakes,” it combines local wines, culinary delights, artisan crafts, and live music into a vibrant celebration.
The Naples Grape Festival traces its roots to 1874 as an agricultural fair. Grapes were first planted in Naples in 1848, and by 1854, the Naples Valley Wine Company was established. Although the festival paused during World War II and faced challenges in the 1970s, it was revitalized in 1989 during the town’s bicentennial. Today, it thrives as a tribute to the community’s creative and hardworking spirit.
Central to the festival’s charm is its homage to local traditions and flavors. The “World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest,” held annually, spotlights grape pies, a dessert created by Naples resident Irene Bouchard in the 1950s. Contestants vie for prizes and bragging rights with their homemade creations. The Craft Beverage Garden is another favorite, offering tastings of regional wines, craft beers, and spirits. Admission includes a chance to sample and purchase sealed bottles of wine, with a Valet Service available for convenient storage.
Music and artistry are integral to the festival’s atmosphere. Performances by local, regional, and national acts provide a dynamic soundtrack throughout the weekend, with a diverse lineup of original music. Artisans and vendors showcase high-quality crafts at Memorial Town Hall and Naples High School, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The festival also supports the Naples Historical Society and Naples Rotary Club, benefiting both the town’s heritage and its future. Funds raised contribute to community initiatives and preservation efforts.
Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, as the festival’s popularity can lead to traffic congestion. Organizers recommend arriving before 11 a.m., with public parking available at Hazlitt’s Lake Niagara Lane and a free shuttle service running throughout the event. Handicapped parking is accessible off Academy Street near Naples High School.
For updates on added events and detailed information, visitors can check the festival’s website, naplesgrapefest.org or Facebook page, facebook.com/ naplesgrapefestival. Whether enjoying a slice of grape pie, discovering artisan treasures, or soaking in the lively music, the Naples Grape Festival promises an unforgettable celebration of the season and community. COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS
Shop Local
More money kept in the community
Shopping locally means that more money will stay in the community. According to recent research from Civic Economics, local eateries return nearly 79 percent of revenue to the community, compared to just over 30 percent for chain restaurants. Overall, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $73 remains in the community, versus roughly $43 when shopping at a non-locally owned business.
Get a personal touch
Local business owners typically are inclined to go the extra mile for their customers and are personally invested in the services and products they are selling. As a result, shopping locally tends to be a personalized experience. Furthermore, a local business owner may be more amenable to ordering products for specific clientele. Such personalized service is typically not accessible when shopping big box stores or other shops where owners are off-site.
Lines are short
Waiting in long lines for checkout or to pick up merchandise ordered online can drain consumers’ energy and contribute to stress. Local businesses tend to have short lines and small crowds, which can lead to a more pleasant shopping experience.
Generates tax revenue
Local businesses generate more tax revenue per sales dollar, according to Rubicon, a digital marketplace for waste and recycling businesses. Taxes paid by local small businesses go to support schools, parks, roads, and other programs that benefit the community as well.
Support non-profits
Local businesses often support good work in the community, such as non-profit groups. These can include schools and sports teams, among other groups. According to Dr. Sue Lynn Sasser, professor of economics at the University of Central Oklahoma, studies indicate non-profits “receive 250 percent more support from small businesses than larger ones.”
Support other local businesses
Local businesses support other local businesses by buying and selling among each other. A local, independently owned restaurant may source its ingredients from local farms, which means visitors to such eateries are supporting multiple local businesses each time they dine out.
Small businesses are a boon to the economy, particularly local economies. These enterprises help their communities in a multitude of ways.

Old School Cafe
Unveiling Nostalgia
Nestled in the heart of Naples, Old School Cafe, owned by Joe Scardilla and Trish Aser, opened its doors in August 2021 after a meticulous renovation. Joe’s experience with restaurants dates back to his family’s landmark steak & seafood restaurant, The Conesus Inn, and five years catering for the Grateful Dead among other notable food-driven adventures. Trish is renowned for the Brown Hound, which opened in Bristol Springs in 2005 and moved to Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery in 2016 with Joe’s help.
The two have created a haven where vintage charm meets culinary excellence at Old School Cafe on Main Street, Naples. Stepping into the cafe is stepping back in time. The interior, a careful blend of nostalgia and charm, sets the stage for an experience that transcends the ordinary. Trish’s culinary expertise shines through in the delectable food and pastries, while Joe pumps out the top notch coffee and espresso drinks.
What sets Old School Cafe apart is not just the ambiance but the genuine connection formed with patrons. The cozy dining area and expansive front yard, away from the Main St. bustle, provide a space where guests become friends. Trish says the CDGA 4-Country roast and local favorite breakfast sandwich are must-tries.
For Joe and Trish, the essence of their work lies in personal connections. Knowing their guests transforms the daily grind into a meaningful experience. The inspiration? Creativity and positive feedback from a satisfied clientele.
The cafe’s proudest moment, Trish says, was opening day, marked by a line of eager patrons, a testament to the community’s anticipation after a 14-month renovation of the space. As the business thrives, the duo’s goal is simple – maintain the high standard of food, service, and ambiance year-round. Looking ahead, Old School Cafe plans to add a reproduction of the original bell and belltower, enhancing the cafe’s historical charm.
As winter blankets the Finger Lakes, Old School Cafe remains a welcoming haven. The scenic drive reveals stunning views, inviting the community to experience warmth and nostalgia in every cup and bite.

As the granddaughter of Bill Gray and daughter of George Musclow, owner of Musclow’s Drive-In, Lynn’s roots in the restaurant business run deep. In 2009, Lynn and partner Mark Steinmetz took over Huntone’s Cones, rebranding it Lynnie Lou’s.
15 years later, Lynnie Lou’s is not just an ice cream shop; it’s a testament to the warmth and creativity that define Naples. In Lynn’s words, “My local businesses here in Naples are truly some of the greatest people on earth. Beyond the ice cream delights, Lynnie Lou’s is a symbol of community support. Lynn has been an active member of the Naples community, supporting local causes and fostering collaborations. She hopes to strengthen ties with the local schools, offering field trips and exploring opportunities for children.

Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars
Just a few miles south of Canandaigua Lake you will find Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars – one of the most well-known and historic wineries in the area. Be sure to stop by when visiting Naples!
Grapes have been in the Hazlitt family for more than 170 years. The family’s history started when David Hazlitt and Clarissa Roberts Hazlitt purchased land in Hector, NY where they shipped fruit to regional markets and early wine pioneers, including Widmer Wine Cellars. In 1985, the family was faced with a tough decision as crop prices dropped. That’s when Jerry and Elaine Hazlitt started Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards and released the award-winning Red Cat wine.
The history of Red Cat is as rich and colorful as the drink itself. This sweet red wine is made using highquality Catawba grapes, a labrusca variety native to the Finger Lakes. When Hazlitt 1852 opened, it was popular in the area to create wine using these grapes, but it was typically pink in color. Wanting to do something different, Jerry blended Catawba grapes with red hybrid grapes to give it a ruby red color. When harvesting grapes in the vineyard, the farmers often referred to the Catawba grapes as “the cats” for short, and that is how the name “Red Cat” was born.
Red Cat was an immediate success and continued to grow in popularity and recognition throughout the years. Today, it is available in several states along the East Coast, available to ship to 40 states, and remains the most popular wine in Hazlitt’s portfolio. So popular, in fact, that to keep up with demand, the family expanded in 2011 to open a production facility and second winery in the village of Naples, Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars. This historic property was previously Widmer Wine Cellars, one of the first in the region with a rich history of its own. Over time, the Hazlitt

family has renovated and restored the original building, but also infused its own history into it.
Today, sixth-generation grape growers and sibling co-owners, Doug Hazlitt and Leigh Hazlitt-Triner, continue to expand the family’s legacy. Though it’s most well-known for its Red Cat wine, Hazlitt offers an impressive lineup of award-winning, high-quality sweet and dry wines, hard ciders, and wine seltzers. Regardless of your palette, you are sure to find something you enjoy.
When visiting, experience the tasting room, tour the large production facility, and hike the neighboring trail that weaves through the historic Widmer vineyard. Enjoy wine in the main tasting room, out on the patio, in the grassy outdoor picnic area, or the new Chalet Patio. The Chalet is a two-story building available to rent. It’s perfect for receptions, retreats, bridal/baby showers, large group tastings, and more! Hazlitt’s has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that is family-friendly and welcomes friendly dogs … and guests even receive freshly popped popcorn with each tasting! Enjoy wine slushies year-round.
Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars is open year-round for tastings and tours. Visit their website for current hours, events, and specials. It is also part of the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail, where visitors can purchase a digital passport to receive a discount on tasting and wine purchases. Cindy’s Grape Pies
Naples is the “Grape Capital of the World,” and locals creatively celebrate the versatile fruit, with pies being just one of the area’s many grape delicacies. Once you try a grape pie, you’ll agree there is no dessert quite like it!
While many sell grape pies made of the plentiful Concord grape, none are as beloved as Cindy’s Grape Pies, serving the community for over 40 years with scratch-made treats from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Founded in 1977 by Cindy Trecziak, the pies were initially a way for Cindy to earn some extra money for Christmas gifts. They quickly became a big hit, and Cindy sold them full-time until 2019 when she sold the business.
Current owner, Matt Cadrette, says, “We knew what a beloved institution Cindy’s Grape Pies had become over the last 40+ years, and we didn’t want to see it go.” With his culinary background, Matt continues Cindy’s timehonored tradition.
Cindy’s offers grape pies throughout the entire year, not just during harvest season, and although there are many ways to make grape pies, Cindy’s uses an oldfashioned crust and a separate cooking process for the
grapes that gives them a nice texture that preserves the grapes’ integrity.
In addition to grape pies, Cindy’s also sells other seasonal pies and baked goods made from fresh New York State produce. Cindy’s even has a pie door at which customers walk up to order baked goods. It’s how Cindy’s has operated since its inception, and it’s a charming way to order dessert! It’s a fitting touch for a town that boasts a wonderful sense of community and Cindy’s keeps the tradition alive, one sweet treat at a time.
Purchase Cindy’s baked goods at the pie door Friday to Sunday; order via social media, email cindysgrapepies@ gmail.com, or call 585-374-6122; or pick up Cindy’s pies at Schutt’s Apple Mill, Casa Larga Vineyard, and Zarpentine Farms. For updates, hours, and more, follow cindysgrape on Facebook and Instagram.
Caruso’s Cafe
Caruso’s Cafe was established in August 2020 after a summer of hard work, resulting in a newly-renovated space that was once a local hub called The Grainery.
Mark and Jodi Caruso, owners of Caruso’s Cafe, make quite the team, sharing a passion for great food, family, and serving the community.
Jodi is a certified yoga teacher and Mark is a carpenter, and both worked in those professions until
March 2020, when the COVID pandemic transformed everyone’s work lives. Along with their four children, Sequoia, Willow, Carmella, and River, Jodi and Mark held fast to their vision, worked tirelessly, incorporated local artists, farmers, and bakers, and made their vision come to fruition.
Jodi and Mark are no strangers to serving the Naples community. Over the past twenty-two years, they have organized, led, and raised money for the American Cancer Society, Naples Cub Scouts, Hospeace House, Trinity Church, and numerous other organizations. You can find them helping the community in any way they can, through food, fundraising, donations, or even running over to fix a leaking faucet.
It’s important to them that Caruso’s Cafe become a place to serve not just food but also compassion, empathy, and acceptance. Caruso’s Cafe is the crossroads of food, friends, and coffee. Nourishing the community through great food, conversations, and organic fairtrade coffee makes the Carusos happy.
While raising their four children, they agreed not to serve their children dyes, high fructose corn syrup, artificial ingredients, or nitrates, so you won’t find any of those in any of the food they serve in the Cafe. They offer a wide variety of lunch and breakfast items, including many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan items.
Mark and Jodi are grateful for their family, friends, employees, and patrons. This summer, they celebrate their fourth year in business, sending a huge THANK YOU to everyone for helping them nourish their community!

Naples Fairview Cemetery
Naples Fairview Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. The cemetery was originally established as a burial site by the Seneca peoples, then as a burial site for the white settlers of the Town and Village of Naples. The Town of Naples officially became proprietor of the cemetery in 1800, and the earliest burial was that of Elizabeth Matilda Durfee Parish (1760-1800). Interred, alongside the early settlers of the village, are veterans of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, The Mexican War, and the Civil War.
The cemetery encompasses approximately one acre off Main Street behind the Village Park (historically known as the Village Square) and Mt. Pleasant Street opposite the Old School Café. Naples’ First Church (built in 1824 and demolished in the 1870s) was located in the Village Square. However, the cemetery was used as a public cemetery and not directly associated with the church. The cemetery is bordered on the east and south by a cobblestone wall constructed in 1916.
Within the cemetery, in the northwestern corner, is a potter’s field. The cemetery contains three family plots enclosed within
decorative iron fencing, one of which is for the Cleveland Family, one of the earliest settlers of the village. A large obelisk honors another early family – the Parishes. It is unknown how many interments exist in the cemetery due to the number of early settlers that were not marked with permanent markers.
Come stroll the cemetery to learn about the early inhabitants of Naples and see the wide array of funerary symbolism and practices typical of the early days of the settlement through the mid-nineteenth century.

This expanded space offers better parking and enhanced capacity to accommodate more patients all while maintaining the same personal touch and friendly care that patients have come to expect. The larger facility reflects their commitment to serve the community and provide an unparalleled dental experience.
Finger Lakes Dental Care seamlessly blends advanced technology with exceptional patient service. This isn’t just a dental office—it’s a transformative experience. Equipped with state-of-the-art tools and supported by a dedicated team, patients receive care tailored to their individual needs. Education and patient involvement are at the forefront, fostering trust and collaboration throughout treatment.
At the heart of the practice are core values that drive every decision. Finger Lakes Dental is more than a workplace; it’s a family united by continuous learning and improvement, creating a supportive environment that nurtures both patients and team members.
Transforming how people perceive dental visits fuels the team’s passion. By making each visit positive and impactful, the practice aims to do more than address dental concerns—it strives to enhance lives. Staff members are dedicated to ongoing education and improvement, creating an environment where patients feel welcomed, understood, and supported. The practice’s commitment goes beyond dental services; it’s about creating a haven where cutting-edge technology meets compassionate, knowledgeable care.
With the new, larger Naples office, Finger Lakes Dental continues to focus on serving individuals and families while maintaining a strong community presence. Staff members actively participate in decisions on how best to support local communities through donations of time, services, supplies, and financial contributions.
Understanding that financial barriers should not hinder access to quality care, the practice participates in various health insurance plans and offers flexible payment options, including an in-house membership program and Care Credit, ensuring that all patients receive the care they deserve.
At Finger Lakes Dental Care, growth is guided by a commitment to culture and quality, with the ultimate goal of helping as many people as possible. Discover a practice where modern dentistry meets compassionate care, transforming smiles and enriching lives one appointment at a time.
