GAME NOTES
• Saturday is the first of three games the Bonnies will play as part of the Gotham Classic. Bona’s will host two games: Saturday’s contest as well as Tuesday vs. Southern Indiana, before facing Notre Dame Nov. 25 at UBS Arena on Long Island in the Gotham Classic Showcase Game.
• The Bonnies are seeking to avoid their first three-game losing streak since Jan. 18-29, 2019 (at VCU, at Dayton, vs. Rhode Island). The Bonnies have not been multiple games under .500 since starting 1-4 that same year.
• Each of Bona’s last two setbacks have come by four points apiece, first 84-80 in overtime Saturday at Canisius, before South Dakota State rallied past SBU, 66-62, Tuesday night in Sioux Falls.
• Kyrell Luc posted 17 points, six steals and five assists in Tuesday’s game. A Bonnies player has posted six steals and five assists in the same game just once in the past five years - Kyle Lofton hit those marks March 1, 2022 at VCU. Prior to that, the last Bona’s player to do it was Jaylen Adams vs. Yale on Dec. 9, 2017 (nine assists, six steals).
• Yann Farell registered his first career double-double Tuesday vs. SDSU, notching career highs in both points (16) and rebounds (11).
• Luc and Barry Evans were both named to the Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll. Luc averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in his first two games with the Bonnies while Evans posted 10.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg last week in his collegiate debut.
• The Bonnies forced 25 turnovers in Tuesday’s game vs. SDSU. St. Bonaventure’s defense had not forced that many turnovers in a single game in nearly seven years when SBU finished with 25 turnovers caused at Siena Dec. 22, 2015. Other high totals in recent years: 24 at Rhode Island Dec. 30, 2020 and 23 vs. Jackson State Nov. 10, 2018.
•
PREVIOUS MEETING
St. Bonaventure 71, Bowling Green 63 (11/15/97)
The Bonnies opened the 1997-98 season with a win over Bowling Green in the Reilly Center, 71-63.
SBU used a 14-1 second half run to race ahead in front of a crowd of over 5,000. Tim Winn scored a game-high 22 points while Rashaan Palmer added 15 for the Brown and White.
• SERIES HISTORY
St. Bonaventure’s series with Bowling Green has been sporadic to say the least. While the teams met in back-to-back years, splitting a pair of games between 1971 and 1972, and repeating that history in 1981 and 1982 with two home-and-home series, the schools would then go another 15 years before the Bonnies scored a win on home court in 1997. The Falcons own a 3-2 series edge, but the schools have not met in 25 years. In meetings at The RC, the Bonnies are 2-1.
• ABOUT BOWLING GREEN
The Falcons have opened the season 2-1 overall after winning their first two games, defeating Air Force, 62-58, at home, and 87-82 at Oakland before dropping a Tuesday night contest at Wright State, 80-71.
Picked ninth in the MAC Preseason Poll, the Falcons return eight players from last year’s team which finished 13-18 including a 6-14 conference mark.
Leon Ayers III is a familiar face as he transferred from A-10 rival Duquesne where he averaged 10.0 ppg in 14 starts last year. Ayers has posted over 21 points per game in his first three games with BGSU. Madani Diarra, like Ayers, is a senior, and once suited up for Saint Louis before spending time at Indian Hills CC and Eastern Illinois as a 6-11 center. Rashaun Agee is a transfer from Casper College where he was named a NJCAA All-America nominee and he has posted 12.3 ppg thus far. Junior guard Kaden Metheny returns to the starting lineup after missing time last year and being named to the All-MAC Freshman Team in 2021.

CELEBRATING BILL KENVILLE
By J.P. BUTLER, Olean Times Herald
This story originally ran in the
Olean Times Herald
on May 11, 2015
Bill Kenville, like many of his teammates, was a bit irritated. The former St. Bonaventure basketball star, as a 24-year-old second-year player, had just helped the Syracuse Nationals to the 1954-55 NBA championship.
Kenville, in fact, played a prominent role in bringing Syracuse, then one of just eight NBA franchises, its only title before leaving to become the Philadelphia 76ers in 1963.
With his team down 17 in the deciding game, the Elmhurst, N.Y. native was brought in off the bench by head coach Al Cervi, who told his young shooting guard, “get in there and win this thing.” Kenville wound up scoring a team-high 15 points as Syracuse came back to beat the Fort Wayne Pistons, 92-91, for the title.
The 6-foot-2 guard was thrilled to have won a championship — “it was a good feeling to win it, especially when you came from 17 down,” He said in an interview with WBNG in Binghamton — but there was something missing. He and the rest of his teammates were never
really feted for their accomplishment.
At the time, the only thing the Nationals were rewarded with was a dressed up ice bucket, silver with a basketball figurine as the handle, to serve as a trophy.
“We were all a little ticked off we didn’t receive anything,” Kenville recounted.
Exactly sixty years later, however, the 1955 NBA champions were finally given the recognition that they had always — internally, anyway — hoped for.
In early April in 2015, the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch held a pre-game ceremony to honor that Syracuse team, on which Kenville averaged seven points and four rebounds per game. At the end, the three living players from that team — Kenville, Dolph Schayes and Jim Tucker, as well as family members of Paul Seymour, Bill Gabor and Earl Lloyd — were given what had long been overdue: a glitzy championship ring.

On Tuesday night, the first-year collegiate forward easily surpassed his career-high in scoring during his first two collegiate games, a fivepoint effort at Canisius.
Dziezgowski averaged 17 points in her first two games of the season for the Bonnies.
Friday against East Tennessee State, the junior forward returned to the lineup after missing the season-opener and poured in a teamhigh 18 points, finishing 6-for-11 from the field with a trio of threepointers.
The Bethel Park, Pa. native tallied 16 points with a game-high five treys to help the Bonnies to their first win of the season at Siena Wednesday night.
The women return to action when they head to Cleveland for a fourday tournament hosted by Cleveland State.

CELEBRATING BILL KENVILLE
Continued from page 9
“It was a surprise, definitely,” Kenville, said to WBNG. “It was something everyone on the team thought there was going to be immediately after — you know, maybe a week or two.”
He then added: “It’s 60 years later now, but it was nice to receive as a memento. Now the kids can fight over it.”
The recognition brought to the forefront the accomplished playing career of Kenville, one that first truly began to take shape at St. Bonaventure.
As older alums and fans can attest to, Kenville was one of the first standouts at Bona, carving his place in Bona annals nearly two decades before Bob Lanier guided the former Brown Indians to the Final Four and a handful of years before the Stith brothers essentially put the program on the collegiate basketball map.
The owner of jersey No. 20, alongside Bob Sassone, led St. Bonaventure to its first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament in 1951 and to a third-place NIT finish in 1952. Those Bona teams were nationally ranked, at one point or another, in all three of Kenville’s
seasons from 1950-1953, reaching as high as No. 4 in the country in February of 1952.
“Billy” Kenville, as he was known throughout his playing career, led the Bonnies in scoring (19 points per game) as a senior, paced the team in rebounds (11.4) as a junior and field goal percentage (.347) as a sophomore, his first varsity campaign. According to his son, Mark, he scored St. Bonaventure’s first-ever basket inside Madison Square Garden.
Upon graduating from St. Bonaventure, Kenville was taken in the third round (with the 22nd pick) of the 1953 NBA Draft by Syracuse, where he played for three seasons before playing three more with Fort Wayne/Detroit. He has the distinction of being the only Bona player to win an NBA title. He was inducted into the St. Bonaventure Athletics Hall of Fame in 1971 and the Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Kenville passed away in 2018 at the age of 87.
