GAME NOTES
• St. Bonaventure won the Gotham Classic title with a 63-51 win over Notre Dame Friday at UBS Arena on Long Island. Chad Venning was named MVP with his first career double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) while Kyrell Luc posted 16 points, six assists and a career-best four 3-pointers. Yann Farell chipped in a double-double of his own (11 points, career-high 14 rebounds). Venning was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week for his performance.
• The St. Bonaventure defense has been the difference in the current threegame winning streak, and a point of emphasis since an 84-80 overtime setback at Canisius in the second game of the year. In Friday’s win over Notre Dame, the Bonnies held the Irish to 28 points less than their previous season scoring average (79.4 ppg) and nearly 18 percent less than their average shooting success from the floor (34.5 percent vs. 52 percent). Likewise, in last Tuesday’s victory over Southern Indiana, SBU held a squad that was shooting over 50% from the floor and 45% from 3 to 38% and 32% respectively.
• In the current three-game winning streak, the Bonnies have limited opponents to 61.7 ppg, 37% shooting overall and 22% from long distance (14-63).
• Since the start of the 2020-21 season, the Bonnies have now limited opponents to 65 points or less 30 times following the win over Notre Dame. SBU is 27-3 in those contests.
• The Notre Dame victory continues an impressive stretch of success for the Bonnies over power conference opponents. Since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, the Bonnies are 10-7 over power conference teams (P5 plus Big
East), including 6-3 since just last year. Included in that span is a 3-1 mark against ACC foes.
• The Bonnies have opened the year 3-0 at the Reilly Center. St. Bonaventure is 24-3 on home court the past three seasons.
ABOUT MIDDLE TENNESSEE
• The Blue Raiders continue their northern trip looking to remain red hot after scoring three straight victories at the Northern Classic in Montréal. MTSU captured impressive mid-major wins over Hofstra (64-54), a club that started 4-1, Stephen F. Austin (75-63) before holding off Montana State, 72-71, in the finale Sunday.
• De’Andre Dishman, in his seventh year of college basketball and fifth at MTSU after multiple knee injuries, leads the squad at nearly 13 points per game while Elias King adds 10.3 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
• MTSU returns six players from last year’s squad that had a remarkable 21win increase from the season prior, tying an NCAA record, finishing 26-11 a season ago after finishing 5-18 in 2020-21. The Blue Raiders went 13-5 in C-USA play, reaching the semifinals before suffering a triple overtime heartbreak vs. UAB. MTSU qualified for the CBI, winning three games over California Baptist, Boston and Abilene Christian, but saw its season end in the CBI Championship Game in double overtime vs. UNC Wilmington.
• The Blue Raiders were picked fourth out of 11 teams in the CUSA Preseason Poll, and sophomore guard Teafale Lenard Jr. was picked to the Preseason All-Conference Team after being named to the All-Freshman Team last year.

ANOUAR MELLOUK READY TO TAKE NEXT STEP IN BONNIES DEVELOPMENT
last year practicing and watching from the sidelines that could be most beneficial to his playing career.
For a young man who didn’t pick up the game until he was 15, the opportunity to slow things down and learn was invaluable.
“Watching from the bench, you see a whole different side to the game. You can tell what is happening on each play and what you need to be doing to make it successful,” Mellouk said. “Every game I watched, I was having conversations in my head about how I can do this or that to make a play work. I always had difficulties breaking things down and understanding why a play worked [before], but seeing the game up close every day helped me see the game in a different way. Now if Coach draws up a play, I really see the play happening in my head and see why I would run to a spot and what would be open if I made a certain decision.”

Anouar Mellouk has seen more of the world than your average college sophomore.
Born in the Netherlands outside Amsterdam, Mellouk spent six years of his childhood in Casablanca, Morocco before moving back to his birth country.
Basketball brought him to the United States at 18 years old, playing at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia as he chased a dream of playing at the Division I level.
Through all that life experience, though, it may have been his redshirt season spent
It wasn’t just being able to dissect plays that was beneficial to his maturation process last season. Mellouk also took full advantage of watching last year’s Bona’s senior class and their daily preparation to learn what it takes to have success through work put in on and off the court.
“Being able to see how the seniors went about every game day and how they prepared themselves mentally and physically helped me a lot. One thing I learned is you have to be in the gym every day. You can’t let up even a little bit. They did a great job of showing us that,” he emphasized. “I started playing basketball pretty late so taking last year to focus on my game and getting better really helped me.” Mellouk didn’t grow up playing sports; instead, he focused on his studies while

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Venning dominated in the post during a pair of Bonnies victories last week to earn most valuable player honors in the Gotham Classic.
Last Tuesday vs. Southern Indiana, he registered a career-high 21 points while adding seven rebounds and three blocks. Friday in a victory over Notre Dame, Venning produced his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, adding two blocks and a steal in nearly 37 minutes of game action.
For the week, he averaged 17.5 points and nine rebounds in 34 minutes per game.
Laccen averaged 9.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in three contests at the Viking Invitational last week, playing 29.2 minutes per game.
Against Bellarmine last Wednesday, Laccen poured in a career-high 17 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Laccen also pulled down seven rebounds in the contest.
Friday against Georgia State, the junior guard chipped in eight points to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
Laccen concluded the Viking Invitational with four points and four rebounds against host Cleveland State.
For the year, Laccen is averaging 6.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

growing up in Morocco. When he moved back to the Netherlands, though, his athletic ability began to show as he grew into his 6-foot-8, 200-pound frame.
He played two seasons at Fork Union, averaging over 15 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal per game while shooting over 59 percent from the floor. He displayed high-flying athleticism and an ability to stretch the floor, also shooting better than 30 percent beyond the arc.
The military academy experience served to further his development beyond the court as well.
“You learn a lot of discipline and a lot about life,” he said. “While you’re doing it, you don’t enjoy it a lot, but it’s something I appreciate now.”
As he wrapped up his time at the prep level, he became connected to the Bonnies through another Netherlands prospect, Mellouk’s best friend Joryam Saizonou.
During the pandemic, though, campus visits were on hold. His recruiting experience came primarily through Zoom.
Hearing from the Bonnies coaching staff, getting to know the culture of the program and the vision for his personal development was enough to sell him on another new home, this time in Western New York.
“When I talked with Coach Schmidt and the coaching staff, they explained to me everything about the program and it was what I was looking for,” he said. “It was a winning culture and last year was a great opportunity to practice with the five seniors and learn a lot from them.”
And while he expected to take last year as a learning experience, another unforeseen development also impacted his development.
Before last season, Mellouk had surgery on a torn meniscus. The injury was something he now sees as a potential blessing in disguise.
“I’ve always loved being on the fast break, but last year after my injury, I had to be more five-on-five because I couldn’t do as much on the fast break,” he said. “I learned a lot of half court stuff and knowing the offense we play really brought my game to another level. I’m really focused on my defense as well. I think I have the tools to be a great defender and I’m ready to show that.”
Now 100 percent healthy, he spent the summer back in the Netherlands where he played for a 3-on-3 national team as well as some 5-on-5 exhibition games while working with a trainer every day.
“It was a nice experience. It makes you feel proud and honored to represent the national colors,” he said. “It was special.”
Now back with the Bonnies for his second season, but first as an active player, he has the unique distinction of being one of the veteran-most members of the roster despite being yet to play in his first official game with the program. Mellouk joins guard Brett Rumpel, who also redshirted last year, and sophomore Justin NdjockTadjore as the only returners from last year’s squad that reached the semifinals of the NIT.
“It’s a unique situation; Brett and I are technically still freshmen. We’ve never played a college game. But the seniors showed us a lot of things last year and we’re trying to pass on the things they showed us to the new guys,” he said.
And, with a blend of freshmen and transfers boasting previous collegiate experience, Mellouk likes what he sees as practices officially get underway.
“We have transfers with a lot of college experience and we’re trying to show them what we know about the program and combine those things,” he said. “We have a great chemistry going. Everybody likes being in the gym, so I think we have a good thing going on.”
