“I could have gone to prep and got ready for college or come here (St. Bonaventure), and get ready to play for this year,” he explained. “During AAU a lot of prep schools were reaching out, but when St. Bonaventure started recruiting me, I thought it was a perfect situation. It’s two hours from home, it’s an A-10 school, the coaches are great, the fanbase is great. It was an easy decision.” Prior to committing to Bonaventure, Rumpel’s recruitment profile was on the rise as he had received interest from other A-10 schools as well as getting at least one offer from a Power Six program. Looking back on it a year later, after completing a year of learning Bona’s system and watching a talented senior class prepare day in and day out, Rumpel says he made the correct call becoming a Bonnie. The opportunity to spend a season within a college program and grasp a new system was one of the many benefits he gained last year. “I think I made the right decision, and that redshirt year was huge in preparing for this year,” he shared. Part of the reason why he views last year’s redshirt as such a success was being able to watch, learn from and practice against veteran guards like Kyle Lofton, Dominick Welch and Jaren Holmes. The lessons they provided helped ease the adjustment to the college game for Rumpel, to the point where he feels ready to contribute when the time comes. “It was great to see what college basketball really is. They played so well together, their chemistry was off the charts, and it was great to learn from them on how to win at this level as a team,” Rumpel said. “Every question I had, I got answers, and practice every day made me a lot better. It was really cool. I learned how to pick my spots and when to attack, going up a level, learning from Kyle who is a great defender. I like to play fast, but you shouldn’t play fast all the time. Mix it up and know when to use your speed. Those were the main things. Basically, just how to play the game.” From the outside looking in, it may appear as though Rumpel is strictly a scorer; however, he wants to make sure Bonnies fans know that his game is much more than being a one-trick pony. “I think I can just make plays. I had to score a lot in high school, but that’s not my full game. I think I am more of a playmaker who can handle the ball well, and I think I just play really hard,” he said. Rumpel is still very aware of the fact that his scoring ability will play a large role in his success at the college level, and because of that spent much of the summer reassessing his game. The biggest deficiency, it was decided, was the jump shot, and so this summer, the 6-foot-4 guard got to work. “During the summer sessions here, the coaches were working hard with me on it. They know that’s the thing that is going to make my game most dangerous is being able to shoot the three,” he said. “I also went down to Myrtle Beach with my trainer Kyle Stephens, and we did some good things. It’s feeling really good right now, so I’m excited to show that I’ve worked on it a lot.” One thing that it seems Bonnies fans need not worry about is Rumpel’s energy and enthusiasm on the floor. Rumpel’s season was sidetracked by a foot injury suffered in an early October practice. He finally made his collegiate debut Nov. 30 and is trying to work his way back into the team’s rotation after getting a late start.

A BOLDER BONAVENTURE

ignite. inspire. invest.

In recent years, Bonnies fans have turned heads nationwide as they traveled across the country in support of their school. To Brooklyn and Washington, D.C., for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. To Dayton, Ohio, and Dallas, Texas - on 48 hours’ notice - for the NCAA Tournament. To packed houses in Charleston, S.C., and Madison Square Garden in New York City. While the locales have changed, one thing remains the same: the unwavering support of Bona Nation, an amazing display of St. Bonaventure pride that has captured the attention of the nation on multiple occasions. Now, through visions for ‘’A Bolder Bonaventure,” plans are in place to help translate that passionate following into investments that not only benefit each of St. Bonaventure’s nearly 400 student-athletes, but also allow the Athletic Department’s 19 NCAA Division I teams to think bolder than ever before.

On September 12, St. Bonaventure publicly launched the largest fundraising campaign in its history - “A Bolder Bonaventure: Ignite. Inspire. Invest.” - seeking to raise $125 million by May 31, 2025. Part of the overall campaign is a focus on improving our athletics facilities.
