GAME NOTES

• The Bonnies continue a challenging stretch to wrap up non-conference action by hosting Florida Gulf Coast Friday. The Bonnies look to bounce back from a 72-57 setback last Sunday vs. Iona, a club ranked in the top 40 of the NCAA NET rankings. In FGCU, the Bonnies face another NET Top 100 team with the Eagles ranked No. 92 after an 8-3 start. Next up come two road tests at rival Siena, a squad with two Power Six wins this year, and at Northern Iowa, which won at SBU last year when the Bonnies were ranked No. 16 nationally.

• St. Bonaventure looks to remain perfect at home, owning a 5-0 record on home court thus far in non-conference play. The Bonnies are 26-3 at the Reilly Center overall the past three seasons. The only Atlantic 10 team with a better record at home over that span is new conference member Loyola Chicago (27-3).

• The Bonnies are 5-0 at home, but 1-4 away from the Reilly Center this season. In five home games, Bona averages nearly 73 ppg and owns a scoring margin of +13.2 while opponents are scoring 59.6 ppg and shooting 39% overall. In five games away from the friendly confines of home court, the team posts 65.6 ppg while allowing 71.2 ppg and opponents are shooting nearly 45% from the floor.

• Bona opponents continue to struggle beyond the arc. The SBU 3-point defense has held opposition to 24.5% shooting from long distance, a total that ranks fifth nationally. Just 22% of opponent points are coming from beyond the arc, which ranks 354th out of 363 Division I teams. The national average is 31%. FGCU, meanwhile, averages over nine threes per game and attempts nearly 45% of its field goals from deep, ranking 30th

• Daryl Banks III has especially enjoyed shooting inside the Reilly Center, averaging 18.0 ppg at home while shooting over 45% from distance (1942).

ABOUT FGCU

• Florida Gulf Coast boasts an 8-3 record overall in the first season under head coach Pat Chambers, who formerly led Penn State. Chambers led PSU to a No. 9 national ranking in 2019-20. FGCU won its first game under Chambers, 74-61, in the opener at USC for its best non-conference win to this point. In true road games, though, FGCU is just 2-3.

• Isaiah Thompson posted 16 points in the USC win and he leads the team on the year at 13.1 ppg. Chase Johnston, meanwhile, paced the team in the USC triumph with 20 points, and he adds 11.4 ppg. Zach Anderson (12.6 ppg) gives the Eagles a third player averaging double-figure scoring. Anderson leads the team on the boards with nearly eight per contest and has registered three double-doubles thus far.

• Like the Bonnies, FGCU split a pair of games last week, losing at FAU Dec. 7 (85-53) and winning at home vs. Mercer (67-62) in their last game this past Saturday. FGCU was picked fourth in the ASUN Preseason Coaches’ Poll with Johnston named to the Preseason All-ASUN Team after transferring from league foe Stetson where he was all conference last year, sinking 178 3-pointers in his first two collegiate seasons.

Chad made good on 67% of field goal tries at home (26-39).

AFTER REDSHIRT SEASON,

BRETT RUMPEL RETURNS AS ONE OF BONNIES ‘VETERANS’

Brett Rumpel’s high school statistics are eyepopping.

The St. Bonaventure redshirt freshman has certainly shown the ability to bring offensive prowess to the Bonnies when it’s time for him to step on the court for his first game in Brown and White, based on his history prior to coming to Bona’s.

Rumpel, coming off his redshirt year, has a basketball resume that is stuffed like the stat lines he put up at Seton Catholic during his high school days.

A native of Binghamton, he posted 35 points and 10 rebounds per game as he led the team to a Section IV Class B title. His finest performance that year came in that Class B championship game when he scored 45 points and snagged nine rebounds en route to victory.

Not impressed yet?

A year later Rumpel took his game to even another level, averaging 45 points and 12 boards over a shortened season due to COVID-19, and as he finished up his

high school career, New Recruit Media highlighted him as being “arguably the quickest guard in the nation.”

Looking back on his time at Seton Catholic, Rumpel is happy with the foundation it provided as he prepared to take the jump to college basketball.

“It was a lot of fun to play high school basketball there; those games were awesome to play in front of our family and friends,” said Rumpel. “Coach (Chris) Siniki was a great coach to play for; it was a great atmosphere to play HS basketball in.”

With Rumpel’s arrival last year at St. Bonaventure, he became the second Seton Catholic alum to play under head coach Mark Schmidt.

Danny Farrell also played for the Saints in high school and suited up for the Brown and White from 2011-2014 as a walk-on. Farrell was a part of the team that secured the Bonnies’ first Atlantic 10 Tournament championship in 2012.

Rumpel’s decision to come to St. Bonaventure was not a foregone conclusion, as several of the nation’s top prep schools were looking to bring him in for one more year before college.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Lops averaged 17.0 points in two games last week, helping the Bonnies to a victory over Binghamton last Friday.

In the Bonnies contest at Canisius, Lops tallied 12 points and four rebounds.

She followed that by matching her career-high of 22 points on 10of-15 shooting against Binghamton to go along with four rebounds.

On the season, Lops is averaging 12.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Banks averaged 14.5 ppg and 3.5 assists in a pair of games last week.

In a win over Cleveland State, he posted 15 points and sank five three-pointers, also handing out three assists.

He also scored 14 points with four assists vs. Iona in the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. He played all 80 possible minutes during the week. For the season, he leads the team with 16.4 ppg.

Both teams return to action this Friday with the women traveling to Robert Morris and the men hosting Florida Gulf Coast.

BONNIES FEATURE

“I could have gone to prep and got ready for college or come here (St. Bonaventure), and get ready to play for this year,” he explained. “During AAU a lot of prep schools were reaching out, but when St. Bonaventure started recruiting me, I thought it was a perfect situation. It’s two hours from home, it’s an A-10 school, the coaches are great, the fanbase is great. It was an easy decision.”

Prior to committing to Bonaventure, Rumpel’s recruitment profile was on the rise as he had received interest from other A-10 schools as well as getting at least one offer from a Power Six program.

Looking back on it a year later, after completing a year of learning Bona’s system and watching a talented senior class prepare day in and day out, Rumpel says he made the correct call becoming a Bonnie. The opportunity to spend a season within a college program and grasp a new system was one of the many benefits he gained last year.

“I think I made the right decision, and that redshirt year was huge in preparing for this year,” he shared.

Part of the reason why he views last year’s redshirt as such a success was being able to watch, learn from and practice against veteran guards like Kyle Lofton, Dominick Welch and Jaren Holmes. The lessons they provided helped ease the adjustment to the college game for Rumpel, to the point where he feels ready to contribute when the time comes.

“It was great to see what college basketball really is. They played so well together, their chemistry was off the charts, and it was great to learn from them on how to win at this level as a team,” Rumpel said. “Every question I had, I got answers, and practice every day made me a lot better. It was really cool. I learned how to pick my spots and when to attack, going up a level, learning from Kyle who is a great

defender. I like to play fast, but you shouldn’t play fast all the time. Mix it up and know when to use your speed. Those were the main things. Basically, just how to play the game.”

From the outside looking in, it may appear as though Rumpel is strictly a scorer; however, he wants to make sure Bonnies fans know that his game is much more than being a one-trick pony.

“I think I can just make plays. I had to score a lot in high school, but that’s not my full game. I think I am more of a playmaker who can handle the ball well, and I think I just play really hard,” he said.

Rumpel is still very aware of the fact that his scoring ability will play a large role in his success at the college level, and because of that spent much of the summer reassessing his game.

The biggest deficiency, it was decided, was the jump shot, and so this summer, the 6-foot-4 guard got to work.

“During the summer sessions here, the coaches were working hard with me on it. They know that’s the thing that is going to make my game most dangerous is being able to shoot the three,” he said. “I also went down to Myrtle Beach with my trainer Kyle Stephens, and we did some good things. It’s feeling really good right now, so I’m excited to show that I’ve worked on it a lot.”

One thing that it seems Bonnies fans need not worry about is Rumpel’s energy and enthusiasm on the floor.

Rumpel’s season was sidetracked by a foot injury suffered in an early October practice. He finally made his collegiate debut Nov. 30 and is trying to work his way back into the team’s rotation after getting a late start.
