The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY
Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL WITH A PET
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We are bringing our new dog, “Mara,” with us to visit relatives in Ohio this Christmas. ey are aware and said that our guest room is prepared with a dog bed so that she will be comfortable. However, we’ve never traveled with a pet before, and Mara is an energetic Border Collie. Do you have any advice for a pleasant road trip? -- Dave and Diane in Sarasota, Florida
DEAR DAVE & DIANE: e best advice is to plan, plan, plan around Mara’s needs during your drive to Ohio. As an energetic dog, Mara needs frequent walk breaks to get out of the car and work off some energy. You’ll also need to stay at a pet-friendly hotel if you’re not driving straight through the night.
Here are some important tips as you prepare:
• Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, and carry a copy of her records.
• Consider microchipping your dog before the trip if you haven’t done so, and make sure an ID tag is attached to her collar.
• Pack a bag just for Mara with her preferred food, treats, toys, cold weather gear and medications. Add an extra leash and collar just in case.
• Install a sturdy crate big enough for your dog to turn around in -either in the back seat or, if you have an SUV, in the cargo area. is will be secure and comfortable for a big dog.
• Take Mara on a few short car trips so she gets familiar with the travel crate.
• e day of the trip, feed and walk Mara at least an hour before departing. She may get carsick if she eats too soon before starting off.
• Never let Mara off leash during your trip.

Semaglutide
Assists With Weight Gain Caused by Antipsychotics
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was wondering whether Ozempic might be prescribed for somebody who gained weight due to antipsychotics or drugs for depression. I read some years ago that the weight gain associated with antipsychotics had something to do with blood sugar levels (or some other metabolic reason). -- K.
ANSWER: You are quite right that many medications, including some antipsychotic and antidepressant medicines, are commonly associated with weight gain. There are many mechanisms at work here, but the blood sugar increase is probably secondary to the weight gain, rather than the other way around. Some medicines are worse than others, so a wise prescriber chooses the least-harmful option when possible. But sometimes the only medication that works for a mental health issue does cause weight gain.
For decades, psychiatrists and others have prescribed metformin to help with weight gain due to medications. It’s certainly better than nothing, but you are right that semaglutide (Ozempic when prescribed for diagnosed diabetes and Wegovy when prescribed for weight loss) will be more effective. A 2023 study showed that semaglutide was effective for people who gained weight due to psychiatric drugs and did not respond to metformin.
Getting insurance companies to cover these expensive medications is often the biggest barrier.
DR. ROACH WRITES: You recently wrote about colitis, aka inflammation of the colon. Could you please explain how to treat and prevent it? -- M.C.
ANSWER: ”Colitis” does mean inflammation of the colon, but it isn’t just one disease. It’s a finding that is associated with many diseases, so treatment depends on the exact cause.
Colitis can be due to infection. Diseases like diverticulitis and gastroenteritis are inflammatory due to the presence of a pathogen. A pathogen is an unhealthy germ in the colon that leads to symptoms such as fever and diarrhea. Often these infections do not need antibiotics, just support until the body gets rid of the infection itself. Other infections are more serious, like Clostridioides difficile (“C. diff”), which is life-threatening and requires powerful treatment. Microscopic colitis diseases are unusual and possibly autoimmune. They are sometimes triggered by medications and treated with anti-inflammatory medicines such as budesonide.
The underlying cause of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) still isn’t well-understood. Although anti-inflammatory medicines like steroids still form part of the treatment for IBD, current treatment uses biological agents to target molecules that form part of the disease response -- without the long-term toxicity of steroids. There are many other causes of colitis. Treatment is highly variable, and prevention isn’t always possible. Still, a healthy diet with a large variety of foods, especially plants, will help keep your colon in the best shape to ward off infections. It’s much easier to get an infection after antibiotics, for example, since the healthy bacteria are largely killed off.
I do not recommend probiotics in healthy people. Your microbiome -- the “suite” of bacteria, viruses and other microbes that live in your gut -- respond better to a good diet than a large number of limited bacteria. There is almost no evidence of benefit when it comes to probiotics in healthy people.

EXPLAINING METASTATIC CANCER
Cancer survival rates are on the rise, and that rise can be credited to a host of factors. Advancements in cancer research and treatment have played a big role in rising survival rates, as have the efforts ofvariousorganizationstopromote cancer prevention and raise awareness about the disease.
The World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of cancers can currently be prevented by avoiding certain risk factors and implementing evidence-based prevention strategies. However, people can be vulnerable to cancer if they do not pay attention to their bodies or make an effort to protect themselves against certain risk factors for cancer. In such instances, cancer may already have spread to other parts of their bodies, or metastasized, before they are even diagnosed, greatly reducing their likelihood of surviving the disease.
Cancerthatspreadstodistantparts of the body is known as metastatic cancer and is often referred to as “stage IV cancer.” According to theNationalCancerInstitute,when observed under a microscope, metastatic cancer cells feature traitslikethatoftheprimarycancer and do not mimic the cells in the part of the body where the cancer is found. That is how doctors can tell that the cancer is metastatic cancer and has spread from another part of the body.

When doctors diagnose metastatic cancer, they will refer to it with the same name as the primary cancer regardless of where the metastatic cancer was discovered. For example, the NCI notes that breast cancer that has spread to the lungs will not be referred to as lung cancer, but metastatic breast cancer. In addition, when treating the disease in this example, doctors will treat the cancer as stage IV breast cancer, not as lung cancer.
Understanding metastatic cancer can help recently diagnosed men and women better comprehend their disease and their prognosis.

Winter weather is no match for Western NYers! The DPW Highway Departments here are amazing, salting and plowing, removing leaves and yard debris for residents. I grew up all over New England, so we saw snow every year, but the sheer volume of snowfall here is breathtaking, but even more amazing is how quickly and efficiently people here are able to resume their normal daily routines. Three inches, no problem, everyone goes about as normal. Six inches, plows do great and all's back to normal. A foot? Two feet? Constant snowfall for 24hrs? No problem. Plow people kick into high gear and keep the roads clear. Residents keep sidewalks reasonably clear and clear out around hydrants. It's just ... normal and so amazing to be able to enjoy the full winter season. Thank you to everyone who helps out in whatever way they can.
Side street traffic gets in sometimes
To the person who let me in when traffic was backed up for half a mile and everyone else just passed right by, pretending not to notice I was there, thank you! Traffic in that stretch often rivals a city or something, but usually the side street traffic gets waved in every few cars. Not today. Everyone had places to go, people to see, off in their own worlds, I guess. So again, thank you. We can all use a little extra patience and let a car in every now and then when traffic is backed up.

Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

CHOCOLATE CARDAMOM TRUFFLE CAKE
Serves 10 to 12
Amaretti Base
5 ounces amaretti
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter
5 tablespoons sugar
Cardamom Truffle Filling
2 1/3 cups heavy cream
4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them
25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed
4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur
Cardamom Cocoa Sugar
3 green cardamom pods
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper
To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving.
To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. SAFEGUARD ROOFS AGAINST SNOW DAMAGE
Snow may delight young children itching for a day off from school. But for many homeowners, the sight of snow means their time will soon be spent clearing paths and plowing driveways rather than building snowmen and sledding with friends.
The sight of falling snow also may inspire some homeowners to think about the roofs of their homes. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety warns that it is important to understand the risk of roof collapse due to the weight of snow on the roof. Roof structures that are in good condition can support roughly 20 pounds per square foot. IIBHS says this equates to around four feet of new snow before a roof will become stressed.
Total snowfall is not the only factor to consider. Homeowners also must check the type of snow that has fallen. According to House Logic, six inches of wet snow is equal to the weight of about 38 inches of dry snow. That means it may take much less sodden snow to weigh down a roof. Roof condition and the shape of the roof bear consideration as well. Popular Mechanics says the ideal pitched roof is smooth and steep so that the snow slides off. Closely spaced rafters improve the strength of the roof. A flat or slightly pitched roof may accumulate snow more readily. Homeowners are urged to inspect roof rafters to see if they are cracked from previous snowstorms or damaged from insects or rot. Snapping or popping sounds while snow is on the roof is not a good sign.
House Logic also says that homeowners can tell if the snow load on the roof is too much by paying attention to interior doors. If such doors begin to stick, that may be a signal that there’s enough weight on the center of the house to distort the door frames. Houses that had improper renovations or homes in which load-bearing walls were removed may be more susceptible to this problem.
Removing snow from a roof is not an easy job - and may be a task best left to professionals. The safest way to remove snow from the roof is to use a snow rake with an extension arm that enables users to push and pull off thesnowwhilestandingontheground.Oneshouldnotclimbontoasnowy or icy roof to remove snow. Shovels, which can damage roof shingles, should never be used.
IIBHS says that hiring a professional roof contractor is one way to safely remove snow from the roof. Licensed and insured contractors will have the experience to get the job done correctly and safely. Homeowners can expect to pay between $250 and $500 for this job.
Roof snow removal is a priority for those who live in mountainous or extremely snowy areas. If unsafe amounts of snow are left on rooftops, leaks, damage and collapse may result.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS
Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.
“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System
When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.
Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.
Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.
Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

ICE DAMS PUT HOMES AT RISK FOR TERMITES
I’s not too soon for homeowners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome winter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites.
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing water damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and drywall and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring.
Termites are known as silent destroyers because their constant gnawing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, which according to NPMA accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeowners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeowners can be saddled with large repair bills.
Before the ground warms, and termite swarms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeowners should take necessary steps to ensure winter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring.
To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPMA offers the following 10 tips:
1. Promptly clear snow off roofs before it freezes and becomes harder to remove.
2. Install snow and ice shields on the roof.
3. Clean out gutters, and install gutter guards.
4. Cover an attic or house fan during winter.
5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.
6. Add insulation to the attic rafters and ceiling.
7. Seal and insulate HVACducts.
8. Install chimney flashing to prevent leaks.
9. Seal gaps around electrical cables and vent pipes.
10. Install eave and soffit vents to circulate cold air.
Soundproof Your Home
What’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding which rooms have the least amount of sound resistance. To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and windows. Take a quick walk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate which ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room where volumes will be blasting on TV’s and stereos. With this information, you should have a good idea of where you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet:
• Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help with the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow down the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home.
• Insulate your walls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors won’t just drive away excess noise, it will also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and cold months.
• Seal up all cracks and holes around windows and doors, and add double glazed windows to your current glass panes.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC
Dimensions: Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the real estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes.
HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.
According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.
• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.
• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.
• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

This poem is in the public domain. According to Parade Magazine’s Jessica Sager and Poet.org, this quintessential poem, originally titled “A Visit” or “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” was first published anonymously on Dec. 23, 1823, in a Troy, NY newspaper called e Sentinel. Sager says Moore allegedly wanted to keep his authorship secret “because he was a professor and the piece wasn’t considered a scholarly work.” In 1837, Moore accepted credit and explained that he based his vision of Santa Claus on the historic St. Nicholas as well as a Dutch handyman near his home. Legend has it that this handyman drove the sleigh that took Moore home. Sager says, “Moore is largely credited with creating the modern-day
image of Santa Claus as well as the domesticity associated with being home for the holidays, especially on Christmas Eve.”
According to Poet.org, this poem “offered a different take on Santa Claus, a figure who was, until that time, traditionally depicted as a thinner, less jolly, horse-riding disciplinarian, a combination of mythologies about the British Father Christmas, the Dutch Sinterklaas, and the fourth-century bishop Saint Nicholas of Myra.” e new version showed Santa as a cheerful, chubby icon now “everpresent in holiday cards, movies, television shows, and malls everywhere.” Much less known is Moore’s “Old Santeclaus” poem.
