GAME NOTES

• St. Bonaventure is looking to start 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play for the second consecutive season after opening up the conference slate with a convincing 83-64 victory over UMass on Saturday afternoon.

• Daryl Banks III led the Bonnies with 31 points, including six 3-pointers in Saturday’s win, just three points off his career high set in November vs. Bowling Green.

• Banks is the first SBU player with two 30-point games in the same season since Jaylen Adams did so in 2017-18 (Adams posted 30+ points four times that year).

• Bonnies freshman Yann Farell is the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time after scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds vs. UMass. All of his scoring came after halftime, making him the first Bonnies freshman to score 20+ points in a single half since Andrew Nicholson at Duquesne Jan. 31, 2009.

• Farell’s 22 points were the most by a Bonnies freshman since Kyle Lofton hit that total five times in 2018-19.

• In the past 30 years, only five Bonnies freshmen have scored 22 or more points in a single game: Adams (once), Lofton (five times), Nicholson (three times) and Tim Winn (twice) are the others.

• Only Nicholson had such a scoring performance as part of a double-double: he posted 29 points and 12 rebounds in the 2009 Duquesne contest.

• Moses Flowers added nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists in 35 minutes off the bench. His seven assists represent a new career high for the redshirt junior.

• Anouar Mellouk also helped ignite the Bonnies early in Saturday’s win, chipping in seven points.

• St. Bonaventure is 27-4 at the Reilly Center over the past three seasons.

ABOUT GEORGE MASON

• George Mason enters this week 9-5 overall and opened the A-10 slate with a win over Richmond (62-58) on Saturday. The Patriots have won seven of their past eight games.

• Senior forward Josh Oduro posts 12.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg while Tennessee transfer guard Victor Bailey Jr. (12.6 ppg), graduate guard and Morehead State transfer DeVon Cooper (10.8 ppg) and junior guard Ronald Polite III (10.1 ppg) all average double-figure scoring.

• The Patriots rank seventh in the A-10 in scoring (70.9 ppg) and fifth in defense (66.3 ppg allowed) while leading the league in 3-point percentage (36.7%). Their 8.4 threes per game also stand fourth in the league while the Bonnies rank among the national leaders in 3-point defense, holding opponents to just over 27%.

• Now in the second year under head coach Kim English, the Patriots were picked fifth in the A-10 Preseason Poll with Oduro selected to the Preseason AllConference First Team.

FARELL PICKS UP A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the second consecutive week, and third time this season, St. Bonaventure freshman Yann Farell has earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors.

Farell helped lead the Bonnies to a victory over Massachusetts this past Saturday, scoring a career-high 22 points as part of a double-double in which he added 10 rebounds. He helped fill the stat sheet with a steal and a block.

The Libreville, Gabon native was on fire during the second half as the Bonnies pulled away, scoring all of his 22 points after intermission. During the second half, he went 9-for-11 from the floor and sank four three-pointers.

With his performance Saturday, Farell is the first Bona freshman to score 20 points in a single half since Andrew Nicholson posted exactly that total in the first half Jan. 31, 2009 at Duquesne.

To put Farell’s single-game effort into further perspective, he is just the fifth Bonnies freshman to score 22 or more points in one contest in the past 30 years. He’s also the first Bona true freshman to score 20 points as part of a double-double since Nicholson went for 29 points and 12 rebounds in that 2009 Duquesne game.

Farell becomes just the third Bonnies player to ever be named A-10 Rookie of the Week at least three times, joining Nicholson (six times in 2008-09) and Alvin Lott (five times in 1983-84).

St. Bonaventure (7-7, 1-0 A-10) is back in action Wednesday at home, hosting George Mason at 7 p.m.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Banks III dropped 31 points in last Saturday’s victory over UMass.

He powered the Bonnies to a win in their conference-opener by connecting on 9 of 17 field goal attempts, including six from beyond the arc. He also went 7-for-7 at the foul line and had two steals.

It is Banks’ second 30-point performance this season, making him the first Bonnies player to record multiple 30-point games in the same year since Jaylen Adams in 2017-18.

For the season, the Somerset, N.J. native leads the Bonnies and ranks ninth among all Atlantic 10 players with 16.7 points per game.

Cody provided a spark off the bench in the Bonnies Atlantic 10 opener at UMass last Saturday.

The Carmel, N.Y. native was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, scoring a career-high 12 points in just 12 minutes off the bench.

Cody’s line also included a career-best three 3-pointers on the afternoon.

She has scored in double figures twice this season, posting a 10-point performance against Georgia State Nov. 25.

The Bonnies are back in action Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Reilly Center against George Mason.

FOR THE ST. BONAVENTURE MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM, THE SPIRIT OF GIVING IN

THE HOLIDAY SEASON GOT AN EARLY START.

“Our staff is so proud of the impact that our guys have had with this since we started in 2019. They are all so driven to help other people,” said St. Bonaventure assistant coach Nico Capron. “It has become a great fall tradition for our team and our guys really like to get creative in their fundraising technique.”

Capron was the ringleader in getting the Bonnies involved with the HEADstrong Fund and Lax Stache Madness when he joined the program in 2019.

“This campaign is unique in that it provides the common goal of helping people while giving the chance to compete with other lacrosse teams across the nation,” shared Capron, as to why the fundraiser is special.

“Every year you hear stories from guys on the team or even read comments from the campaign donors and everyone in one way, shape, or form knows someone affected by cancer. There’s nothing greater than being part of something bigger than yourself.”

During the month of November, team members raised $12,277 for families of individuals fighting cancer. The Bonnies finished second nationwide in their charitable work through HEADstrong Fund’s Lax Stache Madness. The competition pits teams across the country against each other, ditching the razors for the month while growing out mustaches and raising money for HEADstrong, which offers financial, residential and emotional support to families impacted by cancer.

The Bonnies have now raised roughly $65,000 in their four years competing in the fundraiser, and the grand total raised nationwide by HEADstrong now sits over $575,000. Bates College was this year’s winner with men’s lacrosse teams from every collegiate level taking part.

The Brown and White were led by graduate student Sean Westley who raised over $3,300, while freshman Alex Polisoto eclipsed the $1,000 mark, raising roughly $1,500. Junior Cam Germain also raised over $800.

Coming into the fundraiser the Bonnies aimed to raise $10,000 this year, and were able to surpass that mark prior to the final round.

“It’s really special to be able to hit our goal while knowing the impact that we have made as a team,” said Capron. “We are so incredibly grateful for all the donors who made it happen and for the St. Bonaventure community for supporting us year in and year out. To have made it to the championship round was a great achievement, but raising $65,000 in our four years of doing this is what we hold in the highest regard.”
