GAME NOTES

• St. Bonaventure returns home to host Richmond on Saturday inside the friendly confines of the Reilly Center where the Bonnies are 7-1 this season and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

• Bona is averaging 72.3 ppg in its eight home games this year, as opposed to 63.6 ppg in nine games away from home court where the Bonnies are 1-8 (0-6 true road games, 1-2 in neutral court). The Bonnies have shot 45% overall at home and better than 37% from 3-point land as opposed to 41% on the road and 31% on 3-point FG.

• No Bonnies player has enjoyed playing at home more than Daryl Banks III. Banks has averaged 20.8 ppg in the Reilly Center, and has shot nearly 48% from beyond the arc (34-71). He has hit 34 of his 50 3-pointers on the season at home.

• Kyrell Luc had an outstanding statistical performance in Wednesday’s game at Rhode Island. In addition to posting his third 20-point game in a Bonnies uniform with a teambest 20, he filled the stat sheet with nine assists, seven rebounds, five steals and zero turnovers.

• Luc matched his career-high in steals and has at least one steal in 15 of 17 games this season. His nine assists were also one off a career-high of 10 he set Jan. 4 vs. George Mason. In four Atlantic 10 games, Luc has 24 assists against just four turnovers.

• At 8-9 overall on the season, the Bonnies are under .500 in January for the first time since 2019 when SBU did not get over .500 under March 2, 2019 (15-14) following a 4-11 start. That season, the Bonnies went on to reach the Atlantic 10 Championship Game and came a bucket away from the NCAA Tournament.

• St. Bonaventure is 28-4 at the Reilly Center in the past three seasons, good for the best home winning percentage of any Atlantic 10 program. Bona’s .875 winning percentage at The RC since the start of 2020-21 leads Loyola Chicago (.853), VCU (.830) and Dayton (.811).

ABOUT RICHMOND

• Defending Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond comes into the weekend as winners of three straight games after dropping their A-10 opener at George Mason. Since that four-point setback on Dec. 31, Richmond has bounced back with wins over George Washington (73-63) and Duquesne (75-73) at home and won on the road at Davidson on Wednesday, 61-57. In the Duquesne win Jan. 7, Richmond erased a 22-point deficit to shock the Dukes.

• UR was picked seventh in the A-10 preseason poll while senior Tyler Burton was selected Preseason First Team A-10. After scoring 17 points per game last year, Burton remains one of the league’s best players, scoring nearly 20 points per contest this season while adding 8.0 rebounds per night and a team-best 27 steals.

• Saturday’s game features a meeting of the A-10’s two coaching deans as Bona head coach Mark Schmidt and Richmond bench boss Chris Mooney are the league’s two active leaders in wins and years on the sideline. Mooney is the only A-10 coach to both be at his current institution longer than Schmidt (Mooney is in his 17th season while Schmidt is in Year 16) and score more league wins – Mooney ranks fourth in A-10 history with 157 conference victories while Schmidt stands fifth with 143.

• Statistically, the Spiders and Bonnies are alike in multiple ways – neither team ranks among the A-10’s best offensively (Richmond averages 69 ppg vs. Bona’s 68 ppg) and both teams struggle at the line (UR shoots 69% at the stripe vs. Bona’s 68% and the Spiders attempt 17 free throws per game as opposed to Bona’s 15.5). Richmond is one of the league’s better 3-point shooting teams, however, at nearly 36%. Defensively, both teams rank top five in the league – Richmond stands second among all A-10 squads by allowing just 64.6 ppg with the Bonnies fifth (67.2 ppg allowed).

BARRY EVANS LOOKING TO FOLLOW IN FOOTSTEPS OF

PAST BONNIES STARS

Hardworking. Talented. Loving.

Those are the three words Barry Evans uses to describe himself.

The hard work was on display for those around the Reilly Center this summer as he was on campus for both summer sessions, working on his game and getting a feel for the Bonaventure system.

The talent, well, that’s been clear to see from his days at Putnam Science Academy when he helped key a national prep championship for the Mustangs.

Sound familiar?

If he is anything like the last two Putnam alums who led a national championship squad there before attending St. Bonaventure, Bonnies fans are sure to love him.

The 6-foot-8 wing averaged nearly 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals per game this past year while starting all 37 contests for PSA.

The Baltimore native kept Putnam’s unblemished record intact thanks to a put-back with one second remaining in a game against Brewster and he finished the year

shooting better than 51 percent from the floor.

“Barry can do a lot of things really, really well,” Mustangs coach Tom Espinosa said when Evans announced his commitment to Bonaventure last November. “He can play anywhere on the wing, and I can see him playing the 5-spot for us when we go small. He can defend any position. He can rebound, push it up the floor himself, and pull up and hit a 3-pointer. He can get to the rim and find the open man. We haven’t had many guys like Barry.”

Those words stand tall when considering the amount of talented players graduated by Putnam, a basketball powerhouse that only seems to improve year after year.

Names like Lofton and Osunniyi.

Evans follows in their footsteps, becoming the third Mustangs player in the last four years to commit to St. Bonaventure.

And it was words from those two former Bonnies greats that helped influence Evans’ decision to be a Bonnie.

“They said that St. Bonaventure is built around underrated people and I felt that I

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Luc filled the stat sheet with his performance Wednesday night at Rhode Island. He finished with a team-high 20 points, adding nine assists, seven rebounds and five steals and did not have a single turnover.

For the year, Bona’s point guard is averaging 13.2 points and 4.8 assists per game. He ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 in assists and is also tied for the league lead in steals (2.0 spg).

The GoBonnies.com Athlete of the Week presented by CPL for the week of Jan. 12 is men’s basketball sophomore Kyrell Luc. KYRELL LUC

was underrated too,” he said in his commitment release. “When I got there it felt like a family and where I belonged. I glued with the guys real well. We connected and it felt like I knew them, same as with here at Putnam. I just felt it, really. My mom felt it, and my dad felt it. They’re the closest people to me and if I’m feeling it too, why not make that decision?”

Evans, who says he models his game after Kevin Durant, could bring a true scoring threat on the wing for the Bonnies. But he aims to be an all-around contributor in a Bonnies uniform.

“I bring a lot of energy, a lot of dunks. I can guard all five positions, I just need to get my catch and shoot jump shot and off the dribble jump shot and I feel I’ll have a complete game. “My first look is to get a teammate going before myself,” he continued. “I’ve always been like that since I was a kid. But when it’s time to attack and score I can do that, too.”

This season, Evans has started all 17 games thus far and averaged nearly 24 minutes per game. He’s made his largest impact on the defensive side of the ball, described by coach Mark Schmidt as a “free safety” of sorts, roaming around and making plays with his natural instincts. He also has two games of double-figure scoring, posting 12 points in the season-opener vs. Saint Francis (PA) and 10 in a win over Cleveland State.

In a roster full of newcomers, Evans was the first to join the program. He signed his National Letter of Intent during the early signing period last fall. And it hasn’t taken long for Evans, like the rest of his young teammates, to learn the importance of playing in the Reilly Center. “It’s crazy; it’s just how Coach said it would be on my visit,” he said. “We feel great when we’re out there; we really feed off the energy in the building.”
