GAME NOTES
• St. Bonaventure returns home to the Reilly Center for the first of two games this season vs. Fordham as the teams will again play a home-and-home series this year after the Rams only made the trip to Western New York last year for a lone matchup.
• The Bonnies are 9-1 on the home floor this season and 30-4 over the past three seasons overall, good for a winning percentage over 88 percent. That’s the best home winning percentage in the past three years for any Atlantic 10 squad, ahead of Loyola Chicago (.833), VCU (.833) and Dayton (.795).
• Daryl Banks III averages 20.1 points per game in 10 home games this season. He’s shooting better than 45 percent from 3-point land as well in Reilly Center contests (4088). For the season, he is still among the A-10’s top-10 leading scorers, ranking seventh in the league at 15.8 ppg. Banks also continues to lead the nation in minutes per game at 38.2 mpg.
• The Bonnies remain the fourth-ranked defense in the Atlantic 10, allowing just over 66 points per game. Wednesday’s game could see points at a premium as Fordham slots just behind in fifth, surrendering only 67 ppg. Nationally, the Bonnies are a top-100 defense. From beyond the arc, the Bonnies rank 13th in the country while allowing opponents to shoot just 28.7 percent. Fordham, meanwhile shoots just over 32 percent from distance on the year.
• A bright spot from Bona’s setback at Loyola Chicago this past weekend: The Bonnies hauled in a season-high 17 offensive rebounds while holding a +6 margin overall on the boards. Unfortunately for the Bonnies, though, that work on the offensive glass only resulted in 13 second chance points.
ABOUT FORDHAM
• The Rams have impressed under first-year head coach Keith Urgo who takes over the program after one season as associate head coach and 10 years as an assistant at Penn State. Urgo took over for Kyle Neptune who left to take the Villanova job.
• Urgo, who helped Fordham to a 14-win improvement from 2020-21 a year ago when the Rams finished 16-16, has led the Rams to a 15-4 start, though three of those losses are in A-10 play. Fordham is 12-2 on the home court as opposed to 3-2 on the road, though the Rams have won back-to-back games on the road at La Salle (66-64) and Duquesne (65-58) in the past week.
• Darius Quisenberry ranks sixth in the A-10 at 16.4 ppg while Khalid Moore (14.1 ppg) is another top-20 A-10 scorer this season.
• Fordham has struggled at times with turnovers, averaging nearly 14 per game. The Rams have been strong on the boards, though standing fifth in the A-10 with a +2.9 rebounding margin, led by Abdou Tsimbila who is one of the league’s best at over seven rebounds per game.
SERIES HISTORY
• Wednesday marks the 47th meeting between the Bonnies and the Rams. St. Bonaventure leads the series 29-17 and has won 11 straight over its in-state foe dating back to 2013. It is the longest active winning streak for the Bonnies over any Atlantic 10 opponent.

FIGHTING SPIRIT:
CHAD VENNING TAKES OVER AS BONNIES LEADER IN THE POST
By Scott Eddy, Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications
With an entirely new look to the roster this season, every position was up for grabs for the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team at the start of the year.
Brooklyn native Chad Venning immediately proved himself up to the task, but it shouldn’t have been a surprise.
After all, he’s a natural fighter. It’s that toughness gained from pick-up games in New York – and from experience in the boxing ring – that figure to serve him well in his first season at the Atlantic 10 level.
Venning, a 6-foot-10, 280-pound transfer from Morgan State, grew up in Atlanta first, then moved to Brooklyn in the seventh grade.
“Around New York, pick-up is a huge thing. You play a lot of 1 on 1s in the park,” he said. “I feel like that’s where some of my arsenal comes from. Tough games. I feel like you gain a lot of toughness from that.”
Along with his competition on the courts around the city, Venning spent part of his teenage years in the ring, following in the footsteps of his father who was a boxer.
“I gravitated to boxing because I wanted to be like him,” he said.
Boxing workouts have been staples of offseason regimens of NBA stars like Damian Lillard, Kristaps Prozingis, and others. Venning, too, feels his boxing lessons – he spent three years boxing as a teenager – help him on the court today.
“It helped my footwork. All my career, even before I knew how to put the ball in the hoop, everyone always told me I had good footwork,” he said. “In boxing, footwork is everything, which a lot of people don’t understand. So I was already coordinated and once I learned how to translate that into basketball it made me a lot better as a player.”
But as he grew taller it became apparent that perhaps another sport would be his true calling.
“One day I was at my barbershop and my barber was like, ‘You’re too tall to not be playing basketball,’” Venning recalls. “I wanted to get into it and he introduced me to my first coach.”
Venning has the genes. Three of his cousins all played the highest levels: AJ Griffin was a first round pick this year out of Duke to the Atlanta Hawks and Alan Griffin played at Illinois and Syracuse while their sister, Aubrey, is on UConn women’s basketball team.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Jansson went 2-0 at the top flight in singles action in a 1-1 start to the spring season for the Bonnies.
The Mariestad, Sweden native captured her first victory of the week over Olivia Tracey of Loyola (MD) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. In Saturday's match against Navy, Jansson earned the lone point for the Bonnies with a three-set victory, battling back from a set down to win, 6-7, 6-4, 10-5.
Peets crushed the previous school record in the 3000 meters as part of an impressive first day of indoor season for the St. Bonaventure men's track team Saturday afternoon at the Houghton Invitational.
The Akron, Ohio native picked up where he left off following a strong cross country season last fall, posting the winning time in the 3000. He beat out 34 other runners, clearing the rest of the field by nearly two seconds with a mark of 8:45.82.
His run easily eclipsed the previous school record mark of 9:27.81 set in 2020.
The Bonnies will compete in the Brockport Indoor Multis on Saturday, Feb. 4 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week presented by CPL for the week ending Jan. 22 are men's track sophomore Clay Peets and women's tennis sophomore Alexandra Jansson.

BONNIES FEATURE
As his development as a player continued, he played at Bishop Loughlin High before rising through the prep ranks at Woodstock Academy. Boasted by a 7-foot-1 wingspan, Venning began to gain the attention of Division I scouts.
“I was noticing everyone around me were Division I players. I had other guys around me at that level and I started to feel I could play at that level,” he said.
He committed to Morgan State where he would play in 42 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons. Last year, he averaged 7.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game while joining the starting lineup late in the year. He made great strides from his freshman to sophomore campaigns, adding nearly six points and two rebounds per game to his averages.
He’s taken over as Bona’s starting center and is having far and away his best collegiate season, averaging over 11 points and five rebounds per game and is one of the A-10’s leaders in blocks.
The Chad Venning seen today in the Reilly Center looks much different than the man who set foot on campus at Morgan State as a freshman.
He entered his freshman year at 345 pounds but implemented lifestyle changes to get himself into shape. He dropped 30 pounds his first collegiate season, then another 20 last year.
“I was always in the gym at Morgan State. At first, it was hard (losing weight), but it became routine,” he said. “I changed every aspect of my life. I got slimmer, got faster, could jump higher. I turned into a different player.”
As his body and game continued to evolve and improve, that brought him to this past spring when he found himself at a crossroads in his college career.
decided to enter the transfer portal in the hopes of finding a spot where he could continue his development while playing at a higher level.
“I feel like Morgan did the best they could with what they had. I wanted to see what I could do here,” he said. “I wanted to be somewhere I could focus all my attention on school and basketball, a place that felt like a family.”
Venning now hopes to make his own mark at St. Bonaventure, following in the footsteps of other post players who have gone pro.
“From all the other schools I was recruited, I felt like Bonaventure was the right choice for me. It’s the best thing for me,” he said. I want to get to the next level, to become a pro. I feel Coach Schmidt did a good job giving us the blueprint. Now we have to get it on our own.”
Away from the court, Venning has hopes of potentially one day putting the values of his new Franciscan institution to good use whenever his playing days end.
In the future, he’d like to work with those in need after seeing his mother run a nonprofit agency called Young People Matter, which provided an array of services to youth in need in metro Atlanta during Venning’s teenage days.
“Hopefully one of these days I can start that back up. Doing things from the kindness of your heart, that’s what you should do,” he said. “I always watched my mom do things for other people and wanted to do the same thing.”
Kindness is a virtue away from the court. On the court, though, Venning plans on being tough.
