2024-25 St. Bonaventure bonnies
2024-25 dayton flyers
The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team returns home to the Reilly Center to face off against Dayton on Tuesday night. The Bonnies are seeking to bounce back from a three-game losing skid against a trio of the A-10’s frontrunners in VCU, George Mason and Duquesne while welcoming in a Dayton squad that responded from a three-game skid of its own earlier this month with wins in their last three.
• St. Bonaventure is looking to snap what is just its second three-game losing skid in Atlantic 10 play since 2020.
• Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt enters Tuesday’s game with 399 career victories as a Division I head coach. He has scored 317 of those wins leading Bona’s program.
• Senior Chance Moore returned to the Bonnies lineup Friday night at VCU and responded with a game-high 21 points along with eight rebounds. Moore played all but one minute of action after missing the game last Tuesday vs. George Mason due to a toe injury suffered Jan. 18 at Duquesne.
• Fifth-year captain Noel Brown had his second double-double in the last three games with 10 points and 10 rebounds Friday night. Prior to the game at Duquesne, Brown had never recorded double-digit rebounds in a game.
• Bona is trying to snap a rare two-game losing skid in A-10 play at home. The Bonnies are 60-19 at home in Atlantic 10 play since 2015-16.
• Dayton was picked to finish second in the A-10 preseason poll, receiving six firstplace votes to slot behind preseason favorite VCU.
• Senior forward Nate Santos was named to the A-10’s preseason first team. Santos finished last year as the second leading scorer (11.7) and rebounder (6.3) for Dayton. He was also fourth in the A-10 in three-point shooting. This season, Santos paces the squad at 14.6 ppg while Enoch Cheeks checks in at 13.1 ppg.
• Dayton has two ranked wins on the season, scoring impressive non-conference triumphs over then-No. 2 UConn and then-No. 6 Marquette.
• Dayton comes into the game 22th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (1.57). Malachi Smith is the A-10’s leader in assists at six per game.
• Dayton is second in the A-10 in field goal percentage at over 47 percent and first in 3-point field goal percentage at better than 36 percent.
This marks the 41st meeting all-time between the Bonnies and Flyers with Dayton owning a 29-11 advantage.
In the last meeting at the Reilly Center back in February 2023, St. Bonaventure snapped what was a seven-game losing streak vs. Dayton dating to 2016 which had been far and away the longest skid for the Bonnies vs. an A-10 opponent in recent memory.
Last year, the Bonnies lost their fifth in a row at UD Arena against a nationally-ranked Flyers squad. The Bonnies have not won in Dayton against the Flyers since 2016, but in years since, though, the Bonnies have picked up two big wins otherwise in Dayton: St. Bonaventure defeated VCU in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship Game at UD Arena and also won at the venue in 2018, knocking off UCLA in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament that year.

Behind The Bonnies is a GoBonnies.com series where we get to know the student-athletes at St. Bonaventure University. In this edition, we meet freshman guard Noah Bolanga. Freshman Noah Bolanga joined the Bonnies after crossing the pond following a career in France. Last time out at the Reilly Center vs. George Mason last Tuesday, he had a career-high eight points and logged 21 minutes in his first career start.
Before coming to Bonaventure, Bolanga started his basketball career overseas. He spent the last two years playing with Orleans Loiret Basket, a team in the second division of French basketball in his native country. Before that, he played for the team’s under-21 squad, beginning when he was just 16 years old. Last season, he averaged 5.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and just under an assist per game, shooting just under 40 percent from the floor and over 38 percent from beyond the arc. In 2023, Bolanga helped France’s U-20 national team win the FIBA U-20 EuroBasket tournament, where he scored 41 total points in seven games and shot 46 percent from the floor.
The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week presented by CPL for the week ending Jan. 31 are men’s swim freshman Mark Mizsei and women’s basketball freshman Zoe Shaw.
Mizsei topped the podium three times for the Bonnies in their dominant victory over Colgate Saturday afternoon. His efforts helped the Bonnies to a 229-56 win in their final dual meet of the season.
The Budapest, Hungary native first recorded victory in the 200-fly, swimming a time of 1:49.29. He also touched the wall first in the 100-fly with a time of 51.12 and the 500-free (4:45.28).
Mizsei and the Bonnies gear up for Atlantic 10 Championships Feb. 19-22.
Shaw averaged 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 60.7 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc over two contests last week for the Bonnies. Wednesday at Saint Joseph’s, Shaw registered 19 points to go with six rebounds and four assists, finishing the game shooting 8-for-14 from the field.
She followed that performance with a new career-high of 22 points Saturday afternoon at Fordham. Shaw shot 9-for-14 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds in 38 minutes.
Shaw was selected as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the second time this season Monday afternoon.
The Bonnies are back in action Wednesday vs. La Salle at the Reilly Center.

The St. Bonaventure Athletics Department produced another impressive semester of academic success as Bonnies student-athletes compiled a 3.398 overall grade point average for the Fall 2024 semester.
"We are incredibly proud of the performance of our student-athletes academically, as well as athletically, during the Fall semester," said Vice President & Director of Athletics Bob Beretta. "Our Bonnies are true scholar-athletes in every sense and continue to represent St. Bonaventure University with great character and dignity in their competitive arenas and in the classroom."
It marks the 39th consecutive semester that St. Bonaventure student-athletes have boasted a department GPA of better than 3.0 – a run of nearly two full decades. Further, the department cumulative GPA is 3.372.
The Fall 2024 semester saw 79 percent of Bona's student-athletes (306 out of 389) post a GPA of 3.0 or better. Fifty-five percent of Bonnies student-athletes achieved a 3.5 semester GPA or better (213 of 389) while 77 percent (301) boast a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Twenty-three scholar-athletes feature a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
Eighteen Bonaventure Division I programs saw their team GPA surpass 3.0 while 14 teams earned a GPA of 3.4 or higher during the most recent semester. Bonnies softball earned the crown of highest team GPA at 3.675 while the highest academic achieving male squad was men's soccer at 3.624.
"It is quite a testament to the culture of this department that 18 intercollegiate athletic teams recorded term grade-point averages above 3.0 and 14 programs posted grade-point averages of at least 3.4," Beretta added. "To have 51 of our Bona scholar-athletes post perfect 4.0 grade-point averages last semester is simply amazing. While we strive to win championships the 'right' way, achieving academic excellence will always be our highest priority. Our scholar-athletes continue to live that mantra every single day. I'd like to thank our staff, coaches and, of course, our wonderful faculty, for all they do to assist in our scholar-athletes' pursuit of comprehensive excellence."
