Penny Saver

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Neighbor Lets His Dog Poop in My Yard

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM My name is Kitten and I turned 6 years old in March. For my birthday last year my mom and dad got me a little brother, toys, and gourmet cat food. Although I loved the toys and food, I am not enjoying my crazy little brother Elmo. He likes to copy everything I do, chases me to play, and cuddles me when I’m sleeping. I love to watch the birds on my perch every morning and my little brother sometimes steals my spot before I get there. I know one day when he is a little older and calmer, we will be the best of friends. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

KEEP PESTS AWAY,

THE EXPRESS WAY!

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. I would I had some flowers o’ the spring that might Become your time of day... daffodils,

To make you garlands of, and my sweet friend,

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor constantly lets his dog come into my yard and do his business. Sometimes the dog is off leash, and other times he is on the leash while the neighbor just stands there. I’m tired of picking up after this dog! What can I do? Should I go out and squirt the dog in the face with water? -- Frustrated in White Plains, New York DEAR FRUSTRATED: This isn’t the dog’s fault at all -- it’s the fault of the owner for allowing his dog into your yard. Squirting the dog in the face (or the owner) will not help things and will only escalate the situation. The next time the owner comes by, talk to him -- calmly -- and ask him not to let the dog poop in your yard, to keep the dog on a leash, and to pick up after the dog. Explain that keeping him on a leash keeps the dog safe. If the neighbor keeps letting the dog into your yard, or if you don’t feel safe talking to this person, then contact the city. White Plains, like many municipalities in the U.S., has a leash law and imposes fines on owners who don’t keep their dog on a leash, who don’t pick up after their dog, or who allow their pet to go onto someone else’s property without permission. And please, whatever you do, don’t take this out on the dog. Pets are unaware of boundaries unless they’re trained to stay away from certain areas. They don’t realize they’re doing something wrong, especially if the owner is not correcting them. It’s up to the owner to control his dog while outside. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

To strew him o’er and o’er! ~William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale [IV, 4, Perdita] Page 4

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON

CLEANING

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

585-802-1544 DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LAWN MOWING By the trip or Seasonal contracts

LAWN & LANDSCAPING REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

HOME SERVICES

DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up with a damp cloth.” -- D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada * Here’s a great rule of thumb in the kitchen: The quicker it cooks, the more direct the heat. So, for a thin piece of steak that’ll cook quickly, a cast-iron pan fry will do nicely. For a thicker cut of, say, chicken, you should bake at a lower temp for a longer time. * To rid a shirt of a deodorant stain, sponge plain white vinegar onto the residue and rub briskly.

* “Need sliced mushrooms for your salad or recipe? They are hard to cut, but you might already have the perfect tool for the job in your kitchen. If you have an egg slicer, get it out. It works very well for mushrooms, and it’s easier to use than trying to cut those slices yourself.” -- J.R. in Utah * Got an ink stain? Try using the ubiquitous nowadays (thankfully) hand sanitizer! Apply a little sanitizer to the ink stain, then use a clean, dry white rag to blot, checking the rag often and moving to a different spot on the rag as it takes up the ink. * To get clothing really clean, don’t overfill your washer. Oftentimes, we want to get the laundry done quickly by stuffing in as much as possible, thereby reducing the number of loads. But if there isn’t enough space for everything to move about, it can actually keep the clothing from getting clean. Never fill more than three-fourths full.

Grateful To the person(s) who paid for my lunch at Canal View Restaurant in Newark on Wednesday, March 4, about 11:00am, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated, and the lunch was delicious A grateful customer Thank you! While traveling up Rochester Street in Avon, I wasn’t paying attention to my speed.... which I believe was increasing. An Avon police officer was sitting along the street, and upon noticing me, he flashed his lights as a warning. This was much appreciated as I wasn’t way over the speed limit, and driving a minivan, I wasn’t exactly racing! Thank you for the warning as I believe it’s a great way to slow traffic without giving a ticket. Very professional!

Local COVID clinic I took my mom to the Rochester Regional Health Covid mass vaccination site, a drive thru clinic, at Unity Hospital on Long Pond Rd., Gates/ Greece. It was very well organized, and the nursing staff, which they all were, were very friendly and explained the procedure and the necessary paperwork very well. They set up garage-like pole barns to drive in, and you didn't even need to get out of the car, which is excellent for those with mobility issues. The vaccines were well protected to keep them fresh. It took a total of 30 minutes from the time we got there to the time we left, and that includes the time they had us wait after the shot was given to make sure no negative reaction occurred. This should be the example to use for all future mass vaccination sites. We go back in 3 weeks.

Let it go? I wish I could say your rant surprised me. But it was expected. Do you also make the same demands of your fellow Americans when they leave holiday decorations up on their personal property once the holiday is past? The level of control you yearn for is available...just in other countries. Keep hope alive though; [the government] is working diligently to procure the level of personal control you desire. Campaign flags A flag that says 'Vote 2020" with a name is not just a flag. Those flags are 'campaign' flags and are supposed to have been removed within 7 days of said election. Trump lost. Cut out the 'vote 2020' and keep your flag flying; otherwise, remove the flag! Election people should be asking for removal of said flags after almost 4 months. There is as difference!

Tired teacher To the reader who wrote, "There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open" - you are wrong! Teachers are working harder than ever. Many teachers have students in front of us and students virtually at the same time! On the occasions when all students can't be taught at the same time, we are pre-recording lessons for those at home to view independently and then teaching it to the students in the classroom. In classes such as science, teachers are having students at home do one thing and students in the classroom do something hands-on and then flipping the work when the kids flip later in the week. Then there are some kids that attend 4 days a week, so that is another thing to manage. Until you have been in our shoes, don't you dare say, "teacher vacation."

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Can Mushroom Microdose Help With Depression?

Celebrating 20 Years Serving Our Community!

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am battling depression and have a question about psilocybin. I stopped taking Effexor for my depression because I did not like the side effects. I also tried SAM-e, which had only a small effect. So, for the past three months I have been trying cognitive behavioral therapy, using certain tactics. I’ve cut back my days of work and avoid all news when not on the job. I stringently avoid social media. I don’t put myself into situations that I know will upset me. I am also limiting my alcohol consumption. Lately I’ve been reading about how microdosing the psilocybe mushroom can elevate or change moods for the better. I would like to know your opinion on the use of psilocybin for depression. It seems to be gaining traction, but my fear is that it can bring on degrees of psychosis. -- S.M. ANSWER: I found two studies on psilocybin, a naturally occurring chemical in 200 or so species of mushrooms, especially those of the genus psilocybe. One study from 2016 was in 29 people with cancer, and anxiety and depression: 60%-80% had “clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety.” Another study (also from 2016) treated 12 patients with treatment-resistant depression with two doses of psilocybin, and their depression scores were reduced by more than half at five weeks. All 12 patients had adverse effects, usually mild, such as headache, nausea or confusion. Two patients had paranoia. All adverse effects lasted less than a day. While I am optimistic that this might lead to an additional option for therapy, these are very small studies. Further, the authors of the second study note “patients have taken pharmaceutical grade compounds of known strength and purity, under the supervision of trained therapists.” The authors and research institution “cannot advise on the procurement of illegal psychoactive substances, nor can we recommend self-medication.” I can’t emphasize that enough.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Seniors Raising Grandchildren For many seniors, retirement plans can change instantly when it becomes apparent that they’ll need to raise their grandchildren. The reasons this can happen are many, and none of them good: parental drug use, arrest and incarceration, a dangerous military assignment, alcoholism and even death of the parents. The potential complications can be immediate: You have no extra room because you downsized, you’re in a strict 55-plus seniors community, you’re on a very limited Social Security budget, your health isn’t great ... and so much more. If you’re a senior who’s now in this position, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 3 million children are being raised by grandparents. But help is available. Start with the Child Welfare Information Gateway (www.childwelfare. gov) and scroll to your state. Ask about Medicaid for Children, SNAP benefits, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and Supplemental Security Income for children. Raising Your Grandchildren (www.raisingyourgrandchildren.com) has a wealth of information. State Resources, for example, will take you to social workers, support groups and programs in your state. The legal aspect of raising your grandchildren can’t be ignored because it will impact all parts of your life. What you’re providing is called Kinship Care. Be sure you understand the differences between Formal, Informal, Temporary and Voluntary. Formal Kinship Care, for example, means the state has legal custody of the child but he lives with you. State laws vary, and you’ll have caseworkers, court appointments and more. Informal Kinship Care, on the other hand, leaves the courts and caseworkers out of your lives, but legal custody remains with the parents. That can be a problem when it comes to getting the child medical care and enrolling them in school. The only financial assistance you might be eligible for is TANF. Raising grandchildren is not easy. Get all the help and support you can.

Penfield Shop Small Win BIG contest winner, Heidi Campoli BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

lthough last year was extremely difficult for many independent businesses, it did serve to turn consumer focus, nationwide, towards local businesses, inspiring an incredible amount of momentum behind shopping local. It seemed like everyone, from community interest groups to chambers and economic development organizations to community papers, found ways to encourage consumers to support the independent businesses in their communities. The Penfield Business Chamber (PBC) was no exception. Last November, the PBC launched its Shop Small Win Big (SSWB) contest in conjunction with its Look Local First initiative. The contest ran from November 23rd to December 31st, and winners were randomly selected in a drawing held randomly in January 2021. This past January, Penfield native Heidi Campoli received the exciting news that she won 1st place in the PBC’s SSWB contest. Contestants had been asked to post a selfie taken at a PBC member location/website with the hashtag #pbcshopsmall on PBC Facebook or Instagram pages for contest entry and a chance to win $250, $150, or $100 worth of gift cards to various PBC member businesses. Campoli, who had her selfie taken with her 8-year-old daughter at the Patty Flowerday School of Dance in Penfield, was very pleasantly surprised. “I was excited!” she exclaimed. “Someone from the Chamber reached out to me. Then, Patty tagged me in a Facebook post, and she said, “I think “It is a treat for us you won, Heidi!” That is when I went to go to these places on the PBC website and realized what had happened! Campoli, and see people we who said her family had caught know by name!” COVID-19 and had just finished the lengthy quarantine, called the win, - Heidi Campoli “a nice surprise during a downer time.” Campoli, a Speech Pathologist working at BOCES in Fairport and mother of two, chose the Patty Flowerday School of Dance as her contest selfie spot thanks to her long-standing relationship with owner, Patty Flowerday. “I grew up going to Dance 22 which is where Miss Patty taught years ago,” Campoli explained. “She was my dance teacher from the time I was 2 years old until I was about 12! When she opened her own dance studio, I thought that was fantastic because things had come full circle, and my daughter could kind of follow in my footsteps.” Flowerday took the contest selfie of Campoli and her daughter after lessons one afternoon. The experience was also very exciting for 8-year-old Emma. “I think she was even more ecstatic than I was,” recalled Campoli. “She was so happy just to win something that she was a part of. She felt like a local celebrity!” Herself a big fan of shopping local, Campoli was thrilled to learn what her prize entailed. “I didn’t know as much about which local businesses were a part of the prizes,” she said. “The Enchanted Rose Garden was

one of them, for example, and my daughter and I love shopping there. We also just went to Joe Gatt’s with our gift card, and it was excellent with huge portions, great food, and friendly service.” Campoli noted that she and her family are consciously shopping at more of the local ‘mom-and-pop’ businesses to give more support to the independent shops in the community. “Growing up in Penfield, you want your community to flourish, and you want there to be a variety of good places to go,” she observed. “Whatever you put into the community, the community gives back to you. When you take the opportunity to go and support local places, those places reciprocate. They get to know your name and take good care of you because it is not just a day job, it is their life. Local business owners started what they do as a passion, and it really shows in how they run their businesses. It is a treat for us to go to these places and see people we know by name.” Campoli, also a local photographer, encourages others to consider shopping local, as well. “We want to build up our communities, to live in places that are thriving and welcoming, so why not give back by shopping local?” she asked. “Independent shops benefit the community and are unique. They are not filled with rows and rows of the same items you can buy anywhere or serving up reheated food. Each one has a different vibe to it. They offer 100% service and local restaurants create a taste of New York in their fresh, homecooked meals.” Heidi Campoli and her family are currently looking forward to experiencing more of the Penfield community with their 1st place gift cards. Additional SSWB contest winners included Janice LaBella (2nd) who posted her picture from The Enchanted Rose Garden, and Genevieve Ruhland (3rd) who posted from Family First. And, nearing and receding still,

RELATED TO BODY PARTS

The winds of March were wild and drear, Spring never would, we thought, be here. ~Arthur Hugh Clough (1819–1861)

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On March 23, 1839, the initials “O.K.” are first published, in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for “oll korrect,” a popular slang misspelling of “all correct” at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans. * On March 25, 1933, the newly commissioned USS Sequoia becomes the official presidential yacht. Previously, the Department of Commerce had used the Sequoia as a decoy to catch Prohibition lawbreakers. * On March 27, 1973, actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather” as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film. The first performer to turn down a Best Actor Oscar was George C. Scott, for “Patton” in 1971. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
